ఇ టీవలి కాలంలో భాషతో సంబంధం లేకుండా పలు చిత్రాలు ప్రేక్షకులను అలరిస్తున్నాయి. ముఖ్యంగా కరోనాతో ఓటీటీ వేదికగా ఇతర భాషల చిత్రాలను చూసే వారి సంఖ్య కూడా పెరిగింది. కేవలం తెలుగు మాత్రమే కాదు.. తమిళ, మలయాళ, కన్నడ చిత్రాలు సైతం ఓటీటీలో సందడి చేస్తున్నాయి. అలా అమెజాన్‌ ప్రైమ్‌ వేదికగా ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన మలయాళ చిత్రం ‘కోల్డ్‌కేస్‌’. ఇప్పుడు తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులను అలరించడానికి ‘ఆహా’ ఓటీటీ వేదికగా విడుదలైంది. ట్రైలర్‌తోనే ఉత్కంఠ రేపిన ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉంది? పోలీస్‌ ఆఫీసర్‌ పాత్రలో పృథ్వీరాజ్‌ సుకుమారన్‌ ఎదుర్కొన్న పరిస్థితులు ఏంటి? వాటిని ఎలా పరిష్కరించాడు?

కథేంటంటే: చెరువులో చేపల వేటకు వెళ్లిన మత్స్యకారుడికి వలలో ఒక సంచి దొరుకుతుంది. దాన్ని తెరిచి చూడగా అందులో మనిషి పుర్రె కనపడుతుంది. దీంతో రంగంలోకి దిగిన పోలీసులు ఈ కేసు పరిశోధనను ఏసీపీ సత్యజిత్‌(పృథ్వీరాజ్‌ సుకుమారన్‌)కు అప్పగిస్తారు. మరోవైపు మేధా పద్మజ (అదితి బాలన్‌) ఇన్వెస్టిగేటివ్‌ జర్నలిస్ట్‌గా ఓ టెలివిజన్‌ ఛానల్‌లో పని చేస్తుంటుంది. ఆమెకు ఒక కూతురు. కొత్తగా ఓ ఇల్లు అద్దెకు తీసుకుని అందులోకి వెళతారు. ఆ ఇంటికి వెళ్లిన దగ్గరి నుంచి మేధాకు కొన్ని అనూహ్య సంఘటనలు ఎదురవుతాయి. మేధాకు ఎదురైన ఆ పరిస్థితులు ఏంటి? ఏసీపీ సత్యజిత్‌ పరిశోధన చేస్తున్న కేసుకీ, ఈ ఇంటిలో జరిగే సంఘటనలకు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? చెరువులో లభించిన ఆ మనిషి పుర్రె ఎవరిది? తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే!

ఎలా ఉందంటే: క్రైమ్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌.. హారర్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌ ఈ రెండు జోనర్లలో అనేక సినిమాలు ఇప్పటికే ప్రేక్షకులను అలరించాయి. వేటికవే భిన్నమైనవి. క్రైమ్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌లో పోలీసులు కేసు పరిష్కరించడంతో కథ సుఖాంతమవుతుంది. హారర్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌లో కథానాయకుడు దెయ్యం పని పట్టడం లేదా? ఆ ఆత్మ పగ తీర్చుకోవడంతో కథ ముగుస్తుంది. ఈ రెండింటినీ మిళితం చేసి తెరకెక్కించిన చిత్రమే ‘కోల్డ్‌ కేస్‌’.  సినిమా ప్రారంభంలోనే దర్శకుడు నేరుగా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్లే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. చెరువులో పుర్రె బయటపడే సీన్‌తో మనం ఓ క్రైమ్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌ చూస్తున్నామని చెప్పేశాడు. ఒకవైపు సత్యజిత్‌ కేసు టేకప్‌ చేయటం, పుర్రెకు ఉండిపోయిన కట్టుడు పన్ను ద్వారా ఆధారాలు సేకరించే ప్రయత్నం చేయటం, మరోవైపు మేధా కొత్త ఇంట్లోకి వెళ్లిన తర్వాత తన చుట్టూ ఎవరో తిరుగుతున్నారన్న అనుమానం రావటం, ఆ ఇంట్లో ఉన్నదెవరో తెలుసుకునేందుకు ఆత్మల గురించి తెలిసిన మహిళను రప్పించటం ఇలా రెండు వైపుల నుంచి కథ ముందుకు సాగుతుంది. సన్నివేశాలన్నీ ఉత్కంఠగా సాగుతాయి. దర్శకుడు చేసిన మరో మంచి పని ఏంటంటే.. కథ, కథనాల నుంచి పక్కకు వెళ్లిపోలేదు. సబ్‌ప్లాట్స్‌, సాంగ్స్‌, రొమాంటిక్‌ సన్నివేశాలు, ఫైట్స్‌ జోలికి అస్సలు పోలేదు. తను ఎంచుకున్న పాయింట్‌ను పట్టాలపై వెళ్తున్న రైలు మాదిరిగా గాడి తప్పకుండా తీసుకెళ్లాడు. అయితే, ఆ రైలు అప్పుడప్పుడు కాస్త నెమ్మదిగా, ఇంకొన్ని సార్లు వేగంగా పరుగెడుతుందంతే!

ద్వితీయార్ధం మొదలైన తర్వాత కథాగమనం నెమ్మదిస్తుంది. కథా, కథనాలు అక్కడక్కడే తిరుగుతున్నట్లు అనిపిస్తాయి తప్ప ముందుకు వెళ్లవు. ఒకవైపు నుంచి సత్యజిత్‌, మరోవైపు నుంచి మేధా.. ఈ కేసు ఒకరికి తెలియకుండా ఒకరు పరిశోధన చేస్తున్నట్లు తెలుస్తుంది. దీంతో నేరుగా కథను క్లైమాక్స్‌కు తీసుకొచ్చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. హంతకుడు ఎవరన్న ప్రశ్న సినిమా చూస్తున్న ప్రేక్షకుడిని తొలిచేస్తుంటుంది. చివరి 30 నిమిషాలు ఉత్కంఠగా సాగినా.. త్వరగా ముగింపునకు వచ్చేశాడన్న భావన కలుగుతుంది. ఇద్దరూ కలిసిన తర్వాత కథలో ఇంకొంత నాటకీయత కొనసాగించి ఉంటే బాగుండేదేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. అయితే, కథ మరోవైపు మళ్లితే నిడివి పెరిగిపోతుందేమోనని దర్శకుడు భావించి ఉండవచ్చు. చివరిగా ఓ మంచి థ్రిల్లర్‌ మూవీని ప్రేక్షకులు ఆస్వాదించవచ్చు.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: ఏసీపీ సత్యజిత్‌గా పృథ్వీరాజ్‌ సుకుమారన్‌ పర్వాలేదు. క్రైమ్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌ కాబట్టి, నటనకు పెద్దగా ఆస్కారం ఏమీ ఉండదు. స్క్రిప్ట్‌ను బట్టి నడుచుకుంటూ వెళ్లడమే. మిగిలిన పాత్రలెవరూ తెలుగు వారికి తెలిసిన వాళ్లు కాదు. వారి పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు చక్కగా నటించారు. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా బాగుంది. ప్రకాశ్‌ అలెక్స్‌ నేపథ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకు బలం చేకూర్చింది. గిరీష్‌ గంగాధరన్‌, జోమాన్‌ టి.జాన్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ ఓకే. హారర్‌ సన్నివేశాల్లో వాళ్ల ప్రతిభ కనపడుతుంది. షమీర్‌ మహ్మద్‌ ఎడిటింగ్‌ బాగుంది. సినిమాకు ఎంత అవసరమో అంతే ఉంచారు. శ్రీనాథ్‌ వి.నాథ్‌ ఎంచుకున్న పాయింట్‌ ఓకే. రెండు వేర్వేరు జానర్లను కలిపి కథ రాసుకున్నారు. అక్కడక్కడా మలయాళ ‘దృశ్యం’, తమిళ ‘ఈరం’ సినిమాలు గుర్తొస్తాయి. శ్రీనాథ్‌ కథను దర్శకుడు తను బాలక్‌ బాగానే తెరకెక్కించాడు. నేరుగా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్లినా, కథనం నెమ్మదిగా సాగుతుంది. అదే విధంగా క్లైమాక్స్‌ త్వరగా ముగించాడేమోననిపిస్తుంది. అయితే, తను చెప్పాలనుకున్నది పక్కదారి పట్టకుండా బాగా చెప్పాడు.

‘Cold Case’ review: Prithviraj shines in an overstretched thriller

The film is Tanu Balak’s directorial debut

Tapping into the paranormal world of crime thrillers , Cold Case , Tanu Balak’s directorial debut, tells the story of a fisherman finding a skull in the backwaters of Thiruvananthapuram.

Playing the lead roles are Prithviraj Sukumaran as ACP Sathyajith IPS, the cop in-charge of the investigation and Aditi Balan as Medha Padmaja an investigative journalist who has a show on paranormal cases. It is interesting to note the new faces were given due credit and screen space in this movie. The paranormal in the movie was beautifully channelled through the character of Suchitra Pillai as Zara Zacchai.

Two individuals working towards the same goal on different paths; logic and faith are taken through a roller coaster ride as they try to solve the murder. Despite the hype and anticipation, there seem to have been visible issues with the dubbing and questions on whether some of the characters did justice to their roles as it fell flat.

Alternation between the lives and investigational journey of the lead characters was an interesting way to move the story forward, but the narrative shift could have been a bit more seamless. Standing apart from the generic crime thriller investigation movies, Prithviraj has done a stellar role as he methodically unravels the mystery around death. His character stood in contrast with the typical boisterous police investigators as he played a mellow and methodical officer. Opening with parallel possibilities and multiple could be murderers, the movie does hold the attention of the viewer, particularly during the first half. However, moving toward the climax, it seemed to have been a bit of a let-down.

This movie is Prithviraj’s first OTT release on Amazon Prime. As a movie without a love triangle or action sequences, it has done an above-average job with regard to its storyline. However, there are a lot of unanswered questions which should have been addressed.

Due credit must be given to Prakash Alex, the music director for setting the mood right in the movie. That is one of the major highlights of the movie along with the cinematography, by Gireesh Gangadharan. Also, movie buffs can take a go at finding out the cross-references to other crime thriller movies within this movie. Numerology again pops in and out of the movie with subtle hints, keeping the viewers entertained.

Juxtaposing the natural with the unnatural was successfully portrayed in the film. With cross-references to the ongoing pandemic and the movie being shot during it, the cast and crew have made the movie a success in its own manner. Overall, the mixing of genre holds an optimistic future when executed properly.

Cold Case treads the thin line between supernatural horror and crime-mystery genres. It is told through two perspectives: the investigative bits via ACP Sathyajith (a suave-but-deadpan Prithviraj Sukumaran) and the paranormal bits via journalist Medha (a sleepwalking Aditi Balan). Cold Case isn't a character-driven film - both Sathyajith and Medha are mere plot-forwarding devices with no real arcs to themselves (wait, Medha's kinda got one that isn't fully explored?). The horror elements of Cold Case backfire big time, right from the props (a funny-looking refrigerator with a bluish backlight) to the generically staged jumpscares. The procedural scenes lack punch while the dialogues come across as highly superficial. The final twist, while not entirely predictable, feels half-baked with lots of missing…

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Aditi Balan’s Cold Case is streaming on Amazon Prime Video now. Here is our review of the supposed hybrid genre suspense thriller.

Following a series of paranormal incidents, a fisherman finds a human skull wrapped in a trash cover. Local ACP Sathyajith(Prithviraj Sukumaran) takes over the case and starts digging deep to track down the criminal behind the mysterious murder. The rest of the story deals with police procedural investigation and an interlaced horror element linked with the case.

Plus Points:

The film features 3-4 acclaimed Malayali actors in the lead roles including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Anil and others. They shoulder the film with their excellent performances.

The core plot of the film deals with a mysterious homicide and the consequent horror element surrounding it. The premise is potent and the idea of blending investigative thriller with horror looks fresh.

Minus Points:

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The director of Cold Case, Tanu Balak should take a cue from this phrase. He tries hard to infuse horror, drama, suspense and other elements into his narrative and ends up overcomplicating the main plot. The premise looks promising but unnecessary subplots mess up the tempo of the proceedings.

While the first half has a few intriguing moments here and there, things turn monotonous and bland in the latter half. The big reveal towards the end looks artificial. The build-up to the climax isn’t convincing either.

Technical Aspects:

Background score and cinematography are top notch and they stand as the main assets of the film. Editing could have been better. Quite a few scenes in the latter half are unnecessarily stretched out. Production designing is impressive.

Cold Case is a poorly articulated whodunnit mystery that fails to hold the attention of the viewers all the way through, despite its interesting set-up. Prithviraj delivers a fine performance and a couple of scenes in the first half rake up the curiousity factor. But the tempo keeps dropping every now and again which is a big no-no for suspense thrillers.

If director Tanu Balak and writer Sreenath V Nath thought making a film that combines the elements of crime thriller and horror was challenging, they should try writing a review of Cold Case without making it sound like a rant coming from depths of despair. Where does one even begin to complain about this film? Should we begin with the giant plot hole? Or the general pretentious tone of narration? Or the endless flow of logical errors that make a mockery of the audience’s intelligence? How about Tanu Balak’s failure to string together a meaningful sequence of images despite being a cinematographer himself?

Cold Case has a very conventional premise of a dead person seeking justice from beyond the grave or, in this case, from a rickety fridge. The film opens with sequences of rituals of exorcism followed in different religions. It is part of an “investigative” news report about how the dead use the living as the medium to bring those who have wronged them to justice.

The TV show is put together by Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan). She is going through a lean phase, both professionally and personally. It seems her ghost stories are not bringing enough eyeballs for the channel, and she is also in the midst of her divorce. Not long ago, she lost her young sister to suicide. However, she is not troubled by the drop in ratings, her failed marriage or the mysterious death of her sister. She has no inner demons to fight or emotional turmoil to overcome. She makes for an excellent candidate to teach how not to allow personal tragedies affect a good night’s sleep. But, she makes for a poor lead character for a drama.

In a scene, Medha narrates the incidents leading up to the death of her sister in a shockingly casual manner to her lawyer Haritha (Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli). Aditi performs the scene without hinting at any residual pain or regret in her character. Not just Aditi, none of the actors add depth to their characters. Everyone seems to be sleepwalking in the film, including Prithviraj.

A fisherman hauls in a garbage bag, which holds a mutilated skull. The incident captures the media’s attention, forcing the police department to dedicate its best resources to the case. Enter, Prithviraj’s ACP M. Sathyajith. A media-savvy, clean-shaven top cop, who is seemingly still in awe of himself over his recent weight loss. Seriously, Prithviraj seems so preoccupied flaunting his shrunken waistline that his performance takes a back seat. Every scene focuses on how glamorous Prithviraj look in a cop’s uniform as he broods standing at the window of his office, or travelling in his car. None of the actors has really committed to their characters.

The grimness and pretentious tone of the film is a dead giveaway of Sreenath V Nath’s cluelessness about the material he’s dealing with. The screenplay is full of errors that ruins the interest of the audience in the movie. The puzzles are too easy to solve, and narrative errors are so depressingly silly to forgive. The editing senselessly jumps from one scene to another and we are treated to camera movements, which have no meaning and do nothing to improve a mediocre story.

Cold Case Review: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s brilliance is lost in this supernatural thriller

Prithviraj sukumaran makes his digital debut in tanu balak’s directorial debut venture, cold case. though the film has the right ingredients to keep you on the edge of the seat, the lazily-written second half tests your patience..

The Locard's principle is based on the belief that the perpetrator of a crime will leave a trace and that is exactly how the film Cold Case builds its narrative. It begins with an exorcism on the Ghats of Varanasi. A spirit possessing a young boy in a small village communicates with the exorcist, revealing secrets behind his father’s murder. This scene sets the prelude for what is in store for the audience.

Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan) is an investigative journalist, who produces stories surrounding paranormal activities. She is a single mother, who recently filed for a divorce from her husband. She moves into a new house with her kid, Chinmayi, and a caretaker.

In a nearby village, a fisherman finds a skull wrapped in a garbage bag and informs the police. Enter Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sathyajit (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a no-nonsense cop, who leads the special team to crack the case.

As the investigation to identify the skull of the victim progresses, we come across the various forensic methods that are used in today’s time. From skull imposition to forensic anthropology, the film extensively shows how these techniques can be used to identify the victim. Every clue takes them a step closer to the killer.

In a parallel plot, we come across how strange things take place once Medha moves into her new house. From hair in the kitchen sink to bitten apples and maggots in the food, eerie things force Medha to meet an occult expert, Zara Zacchai (Suchitra Pillai). How paranormal activities and forensic investigation help in cracking the case form the crux of the story.

Though the suspense thriller is edgy but with paranormal activities, the long run time is a huge letdown. Director Tanu Balak has squeezed in a lot of details in the second half, which becomes too much to bear after a certain point.

Prithviraj Sukumaran doesn’t get a chance to display his acting chops as the script is written in such a way that it demands quite less from its lead actors. Aditi Balan, who scored a hit with her Tamil film Aruvi, has a stoic expression even when spooky things are happening around her.

The supporting cast, including Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli (who plays an advocate) and Suchitra Pillai play their part well. Each frame set by the cinematographers Gireesh Gangadharan and Jomon T John renders that spooky feeling. Composer Prakash Alex keeps the background score minimal without adding too many elements.

Though the film is set after the Covid-19 pandemic, other than a mention of it in the story, none of the actors wear a mask or follow any social distancing or hygiene protocols. This sets a bad precedence and also shows how little things are not given proper attention by the direction team.

Cold Case could have been a good whodunnit suspense thriller. However, the intriguing first half is followed by a second half which has too many sub plots.

'Cold Case' review: Don't expect much from this overstretched horror-thriller

Amazon Prime Video has released Prithviraj's Cold Case , which is the directorial debut of Tanu Balak. The movie is an investigative horror thriller that tells two parallel stories, however, it couldn't live up to the expectations. While Prithviraj deals with the thriller angle as Assistant Commissioner of Police Sathyajith, actress Aditi Balan as Medha takes over the horror part. Here's our review.

What is the movie all about?

The movie begins with a fisherman, who finds a skull, leading to a 139-minute long investigation. Sathyajith takes the lead in the case, and identifies the victim as a girl named Eva Maria. In parallel, Medha moves to a new house with her child, who loves a creepy-looking doll. Medha, a journalist who chases ghost stories, feels an invisible presence in the house.

How do the parallel threads connect?

By now, one must have guessed the connection between the two stories, it's Eva Maria. While Sathyajith goes around on his bike cracking the case, Medha seeks a "scrying" session to know the truth. They find out that she has died a mysterious death. Investigation about the same person, by applying different methods, connects the two parallel threads in the end.

References to 'Cold' in this movie were beautifully added

In Cold Case , director Balak subtly adds references to Cold in the scenes. For instance, Medha's daughter likes to play with cold water and ice. Then, one scene had a spider inside an ice cube that scares the maid, the bite on an apple that was inside the fridge and also, Medha's imagination of cold chicken curry filled with worms. Is the refrigerator possessed?

Yes, the refrigerator is possessed!

While the movie had the potential of being a good thriller, adding horror somewhat killed it. The part where Dr. Vasundhara Bose (played by Suchitra Pillai) talks about spirits in electric devices - this is why horror genres don't do well in India! To know the reason behind the possessed refrigerator, you have to watch the film. However, all the actors were terrific.

The background sound played a major role in the movie

This movie shifts from thriller background sound to horror in seconds, and it is commendable. When Sathyajith investigates the case, the audio is subtle, but when Medha experiences spirit around her, the track changes to give you the chills. Plus, the movie has a different soundtrack for when crime is being committed. These little things made this movie an interesting watch.

Movie is overstretched, but is bearable; gets 3/5

Cold Case has a good thriller story and also, gives you creeps with its horror angle. The drawback is the overstretched storyline, which couldn't keep the movie interesting after a point. But the curiosity keeps you hooked till the end. All the actors gave a stellar performance, including the adorable child actor. Verdict: 3 stars .

Cold Case Movie Review: This Prithviraj Sukumaran Starrer Is Not Your Usual Cop Thriller

Cold Case , the mystery-cop thriller has finally premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Prithviraj Sukumaran and Aditi Balan have played the lead roles in the movie, which marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Tanu Balak. Cold Case is jointly produced by Jomon T John, Shameer Muhammed, and Anto Joseph, under the banners Plan J Studios and Anto Joseph Film Company.

A human skull is found from the backwaters, and ACP Sathyajith IPS (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is assigned to investigate the case. Meanwhile, Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan), a journalist and single mother shifts to a new house with her little daughter Chinnootty, where she experiences paranormal activities. Sathyajith and Medha proceed with their respective investigations and reach a common point. What happens next thickens the plot.

Script And Direction

Tanu Balak makes a decent directorial debut with Cold Case , which is scripted by Sreenath V Nath. The movie begins on a highly promising note with the introduction of two intriguing parallel tracks. What works in favour of the movie is its crisp narrative that doesn't spend much time establishing its leads or premise.

The best thing about Cold Case is that it stays away from unnecessary subplots, fight scenes, and most importantly, a romance track. This crisp storytelling makes the movie an engaging watch for most of its run time. There are rare light moments (especially the Drishyam reference), that brings a smile. The way the current pandemic situation is blended into the narrative deserves a special mention.

But Cold Case falters when it comes to the second half (or maybe the last 30 minutes), where the narrative suddenly gets into a 'cold' mode. The template horror track looks forced and falls flat, despite providing quite a few moments of jump scares. Also, the track is completely sidelined towards the end, and the movie focuses completely on the routine investigation story. The climax too looks rushed and forced, thus leaving the viewers unsatisfied. Cold Case definitely had the potential to be much more.

Performances

Prithviraj Sukumaran, who plays ACP Sathyajith has excelled as the reserved, intelligent police officer. The actor breaks his signature hyper-masculine mould with the brilliant underplay in Cold Case . Even though the character doesn't offer him much to perform, Prithviraj's screen presence and exceptional voice modulation unarguably make the storytelling more appealing.

Aditi Balan has delivered a decent performance as journalist Medha Padmaja. But the excessive underplay and lip-sync issues play spoilsport at certain points and the actress evidently struggles to create the much-needed impact.

Late Anil Nedumangadu makes a mark with the final performance of his career as CI Ziyad. The rest of the star cast, including Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli, Athmiya Rajan, Suchitra Pillai, Pooja Mohanraj, Ravi Krishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Maala Parvathi, and so on have played their parts well.

Technical Aspects

Jomon T John and Gireesh Gangadharan, the cinematographers have done a brilliant job with the visualisation of the film. The DOPs have succeeded in creating perfect backdrops for the two parallel narratives, which keeps the overall mood intact. Shameer Muhammed, the editor too has done a good job.

But it is the background score by Prakash Alex, that makes Cold Case a great edge-of-the-seat thriller experience for most of its parts. However, the song is just forgettable. The sound design and art direction departments too deserve a round of applause.

Cold Case is not your usual cop thriller that offers a lot of twists and thrills. This Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer is a decent investigative-horror thriller, that emerges as a pretty engaging watch. But, the movie might disappoint the viewers who expect more.

A sequel to Prithviraj's Cold Case: Tanu Balak opens up on ending the film on an uncertain note

Malayalam cinema industry has always warmed up to debutant film makers and writers who prove their mettle in their first movie itself. Latest movie Cold Case starring Prithviraj in the lead role too is directed by a newcomer. The film that was released on the streaming giant Amazon Prime is helmed by Tanu Balak. Though this is his first outing as a director, Tanu is no stranger to the cinema industry.

Tanu has directed hundreds of advertisements and had wielded camera for many Malayalam movies too. The film maker says he wished to direct a movie only when he wouldn’t be able to resist an amazing screenplay. In a candid interview with Onamanoram, Tanu Balak opens up about Cold Case and his future plans too.

What took you so long to turn into direction?

I have wielded the camera for super hit movies like Train and Of The People. Meanwhile, I mostly did advertisements for television. It is only now that a good screenplay came my way. The script of the movie is penned by Sreenath V Nath. When I showed it to ace cinematographer Jomon T John, he too liked it. It was he who spoke to Prithviraj about this story. Anto Joseph, Sameer and Jomon agreed to jointly bankroll the movie. That is how this movie took shape. I decided to turn to direction when I got a screenplay which I really liked and wished to direct.

The movie has been garnering great reviews. What do you feel?

Everyone feel happiness when they hear great comments about their works. The audience in around 250 countries can watch the movie at the same time since it had an OTT release. Besides, the movie got amazing visibility on the first day itself. Lots of people are calling to congratulate and express their opinion about the film. I am really excited about it. This movie was shot amid the Covid pandemonium. When a movie is released on OTT, huge number of people would watch it on the first day itself and say their comments. It indeed is one of the most amazing advantages of having an OTT release.

Why did you blend the horror and thriller genres in the screenplay?

People are always interested in watching thriller movies. Such movies would instantly attract attention. The initial thread of the movie only had a horror track. It was only later that it got transformed into an investigative thriller. In the plot, two types of investigations happen in a parallel manner. We are not commenting whether any faith or beliefs are right or wrong. Each person can decide based on their own beliefs and conviction.

On one side, an investigation based on scientific facts takes place. It has a full proof approach where faith has no place. In case, I experience paranormal activities as shown in the movie, I would probably die of heart attack. One would experience paranormal activities based on what he/she thinks and believes. One’s imagination can be stretched to any extend. Prithviraj’s character handles the case based on scientific proof until the end of the movie. We had done really good homework before making this movie.

How was your experience filming during the pandemic times?

Everything was well planned as the pandemic restrictions were still on. The crew members had stayed at a single location, without going home or breaching the bubble. On some days, we had to film wearing PPT kits. The indoor scenes were shot first. We had planned to shoot the outdoor scenes and the shots that involve crowds in the end. I must say that there were difficulties. Some of the locations were abruptly turned into containment zones. So, we had to look for new locations. Fortunately, no one in the crew had tested positive while shooting. Everyone was careful and we shot the movie by strictly following the pandemic protocols.

Was Cold Case exclusively shot for OTT?

No, Cold Case isn’t a movie that was shot for OTT. We wanted to have a theater release. This is a movie that has great significance for sound effects. As it is a horror thriller, the sound effects would work only if the movie is enjoyed on big screen. But, no one expected a second wave of Covid 19, right? We decided to go for an OTT release as we realized that it wasn’t possible to release the movie in theaters, in the present situation. OTT too has its own advantages.

Was it difficult to find producers during the pandemic times?

We didn’t face such difficulties as Cold Case is a movie with amazing star value. The project was on as soon as Prithviraj liked the script. There is a scope for business when a big star like him comes on board. Besides, lots of newcomers too have worked in this project. I am proud that a handful of newcomers, including me, have been part of the movie. Producers Anto Joseph, Jomon and Shameer were very supportive.

The story takes place during the Covid times. However, no precautions have been shown in the scenes.

The character uses masks and gloves in the scenes that take place in Varanasi. However, the rest of the plot has been shown as happening during the post Covid times. “This is a work of fiction that takes place in a mask free world that has survived the dreaded pandemic”, is shown before the movie begins. While shooting, we had hoped that we could release the movie when the pandemic subsides and every one walks freely without wearing masks. Unfortunately, we still haven’t been able to survive the pandemic. Besides, this is a movie and a star like Prithviraj cannot be shown as wearing mask in the scenes.

The casting was spot on. How did you manage it?

Aditi Balan’s debut movie Aruvi was noticed in Tamil Nadu and here as well. She has the personality and mannerisms of a journalist. Aditi did a brilliant job playing her character perfectly. Meanwhile, the new artists were cast after screen tests and auditions. So, there is freshness in the casting.

Prithviraj had clear ideas about the movie as soon as he read the script. It was impressive seeing him mouth long dialogues in a single stretch. I have often wondered how he could effortlessly by heart such lengthy dialogues. He is not just an amazing actor but a talented director too. I didn’t have to explain the scenes too much to him. Moreover, that character hasn’t been given any unrealistic superhuman like qualities. The character is designed to perfectly suit the screenplay. Besides, his personal life isn’t shown in the movie. Sathyajith is a brilliant police officer.

Meanwhile, the female lead Medha’s personal life has been shown, just to explain why she is living alone. But, her husband isn’t shown in the movie. We haven’t included any unnecessary character in the film.

The movie ends on an uncertain note. Can we expect a sequel?

I cannot say whether there would be a sequel to Cold Case. It is true that some questions have been left unanswered. It was done deliberately. The movie ends as if the story continues. However, I don’t contemplate a second part as of now. It would happen if it is meant to happen.

What do you have to say about Sreenath as a screenwriter?

Screenwriter Sreenath V Nath is my brother in law. This is mine and his first movie. Both of us live in the same house. So, we discussed a lot while the script was being written. The scientific angle of the movie has been written after doing good research in the forensic and other departments. Lots of data was collected from many places. Both of us had gone together to a few places and offices to collect information. He is the one who penned the script. Meanwhile, I, being the director was able to ask many questions and clarify my doubts. His screenplay was perfect and complete. We didn’t have to rework it.

Did the expenses shoot unexpectedly owing to the pandemic?

No, the expenses didn’t shoot much. It is true that we had faced minor difficulties. We had traveled to Varanasi with a very small group. Travel restrictions were there due to the pandemic. Besides, we were expecting such difficulties. However, we were able to wrap up the filming within the stipulated time itself.

What are your plans for future?

I do not wish to do another movie as soon as my first movie is released. I would commit a film only if I like the script. I had waited for so long only because I was looking for a good script. I am listening to many stories and narrations. But, I would take it up only if I like the theme and the story. I am really happy that my debut movie just got released. Those who have watched the movie is calling me and saying great comments. Now, my main job is speaking to them. Besides, I take rest and sleep a lot. I would request everyone to watch Cold Case and let me know your opinions.

CBS' Cold Case Revival Is the Best Crime Drama Idea in Years

CBS is planning to revive Cold Case, and bringing back the criminally underrated TV show is exactly what the entire crime drama genre needs.

A Cold Case revival might finally get the CBS crime drama the recognition it's always deserved -- but more than that, it's exactly what would spice up a predictable genre. Detective Lilly Rush and her colleagues were a breath of fresh air when Cold Case premiered in 2003, and they developed a loyal fan base over seven seasons and more than 150 episodes because they didn't do things the procedural way.

Now CBS is reportedly developing a new Cold Case series , and there's every reason to get excited about it. The characters and storytelling are worth revisiting, especially with the original show having rebuilt its audience through streaming and cable TV reruns. But the crime genre has also changed an awful lot since Cold Case went off the air in 2010 -- and the current trends are playing right into Lilly and company's hands.

Cold Case Was a Vastly Underrated TV Series

The show and its cast never got the praise they deserved, 10 crime shows that stand out for breaking genre molds.

During its original run from 2003 to 2010, Cold Case largely flew under the radar. While those who watched it became dedicated fans, the show was airing at the same time that Jerry Bruckheimer was producing multiple hit crime dramas for CBS. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation quickly turned into a massive franchise and there was also the success of Without a Trace , led by established film star and Tony Award winner Anthony LaPaglia. TV viewers would be forgiven for not knowing that Bruckheimer also executive produced Cold Case , which wasn't part of a franchise and didn't have a known name in its cast.

That cast, however, was one of the best ensembles on any TV procedural. The underrated Kathryn Morris shone as Lilly Rush, and Danny Pino joined the cast a handful of episodes later -- replacing future Grey's Anatomy star Justin Chambers -- as Lilly's new partner Scotty Valens. They were surrounded by a team that knew how to play off one another incredibly well: Thom Barry ( The Fast and the Furious ) as Will Jeffries, Jeremy Ratchford (who also played the X-Men's Banshee in both live-action and animation) as Jeffries' equally world-weary partner Nick Vera, and John Finn ( The Walking Dead ) as John Stillman. Once 9-1-1 's Tracie Thoms joined in Season 3 as Kat Miller, this lineup of always reliable actors was complete. Their not being A-listers worked in their favor as they embodied their characters so well that each one felt like somebody the viewers could walk into on a Philadelphia street. Pino and Finn also got behind-the-scenes credits over the course of the series, writing and directing respectively.

Beyond that, Cold Case had an incredible cast of guest actors over the years to populate its stories, helping to bring them to even better life than the average "case of the week" procedural. The witnesses, victims and suspects were so much better drawn in scripts that had nuance, character depth and genuine heartbreak. Producers also went to great lengths to ground the show in whatever time period the detectives were exploring -- including the use of decade-appropriate music, the rights for which notoriously prevented Cold Case from any kind of home release until 2020. But everything about the show, on and off-screen, felt deliberate and thoughtful. It was the kind of care that's directly opposite to the almost assembly line-like feel of today's TV crime dramas, which is one of the reasons why this is the perfect time for a Cold Case return.

A Cold Case Revival Has Every Chance To Be a Hit

Why a new series wouldn't be just another reboot, 10 best shows from the early 2000s that are as good as you remember.

Despite the oversaturation of TV reboots and revivals, Cold Case has every reason to once again stand out from the crowd. While being referred to as a Cold Case reboot, it's actually more of a revival because the story is expected to pick up 15 years after the original series, and it's expected to incorporate classic characters. It's not starting over; it's carrying on. The involvement of series creator Meredith Stiehm is a huge mark in its favor -- as is the fact that per Deadline , Danny Pino has expressed interest at reprising his role as Detective Scotty Valens. The potential involvement of Law & Order: SVU alum Pino suggests that the Cold Case revival is following the path forged by CSI: Vegas , which is the perfect approach.

CSI: Vegas succeeded because it honored CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and gave existing fans that satisfaction, but it seamlessly integrated new characters and more modern stories, ensuring that it wasn't reliant on nostalgia. What could have been a one-and-done limited series is now on Season 3 because Jason Tracey and his team built their world in layers. The Cold Case revival can similarly be a hit for CBS if it's able to bring back the original cast and let them organically mesh with the new Philadelphia detectives who are supposed to carry the show forward. It can't simply ride on the old team's coattails; it has to bring something fresh to the table, too.

Yet that fresh angle is already somewhat on the table. Interest in cold cases has been on the rise for years, as the explosion in the true crime genre has led to multiple miniseries and documentaries that focus on re-examining dormant investigations -- on top of the ongoing success of Dick Wolf's Cold Justice , led by Kelly Siegler . On the scripted side, Prime Video is working with author Michael Connelly on a Bosch spinoff based on the character of Renee Ballard, who is a cold case detective for the Los Angeles Police Department. Bringing back Cold Case fits perfectly into this developing niche. That, in turn, will make the show feel timely without the pressure to incorporate current events or issues... something that's been an Achilles heel for other crime dramas, which sometimes try a little too hard to fit a story around a hot topic.

Then there are the strategic advantages. It was established that Cold Case , CSI and Without a Trace all share one universe -- not surprising given that they all had the same executive producer -- so new Cold Case episodes automatically open the door for a crossover with CSI: Vegas . That's a huge marketing plus for CBS in TV's current franchise-heavy age, although it would have to be used sparingly to avoid turning Cold Case into something it isn't. But a revival can also have a long-term benefit for the network. CBS is known for its procedurals, yet it could use another marquee title. Blue Bloods is ending in fall 2024 and the Criminal Minds revival is on Paramount+ instead of network TV. Cold Case would give CBS another known name to go with CSI and NCIS ; it may never have been as big as either of those franchises, but people still have heard of it.

And stylistically, there's nothing on the air like Cold Case . It took place in a different locale than most crime dramas and it simply did things differently than any other show. There weren't any huge "event" episodes or stunt castings, and while its characters' personal lives were a part of the action, they didn't pull audiences away from the main stories. Cold Case episodes were as much -- if not moreso -- about the civilians than they were about the detectives. That shift in focus and the ability to follow along without knowing other shows or a lot of canon would help answer some of the critiques from those TV viewers who are tired of franchises and cookie-cutter cop shows. It would again be a breath of fresh air in the TV crime drama landscape to have a series that is quieter, more thoughtful, and much more creative. Like Lilly Rush, Scotty Valens and the team, Cold Case as a show was just focused on doing its job well. Doing a Cold Case revival in 2024 would feel like bringing the whole genre back to its roots, and hopefully recapture some of what's made crime dramas so enjoyable.

EXCLUSIVE : After bringing back CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with CSI: Vegas , CBS is looking to revive another Jerry Bruckheimer Television-produced crime procedural from the 2000s. The network is in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV for a reboot of Cold Case , which aired on CBS for seven seasons from 2003-2010, Deadline has learned. The followup comes from the series’ creator/executive producer Meredith Stiehm .

This is a new location as the original Cold Case was set in Philadelphia. The move would allow the potential new series to introduce a new group of characters as they tackle unsolved homicides.

Steihm is writing the script. She is executive producing with JBTV’s Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed for WBTV and CBS Studios. Talks between CBS and WBTV have been going on for weeks, and sources stress that the two sides are not close to a deal. Reps for the network and the studios declined comment.

The original series follows Detective Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris), a homicide detective with the Philadelphia Police Department specializing in cold cases, who was partnered for the majority of the show’s run with Detective Scotty Valens (Danny Pino).

No talent is currently attached to the reboot though I hear Pino has had informal conversations to reprise his fan favorite character Det. Scotty Valens, possibly in a significant way. I hear Morris has not been approached about the reboot but is aware of it and could potentially appear in some (likely limited) capacity to provide additional continuity, having led the original series for seven seasons.

Cold Case ‘s main cast also included John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry and Tracie Thoms.

Before proceeding with talent discussions, WBTV has to close a deal with CBS, which I hear had been a challenge. According to sources, the sticking points include some of the issues that the two sides faced during the renewal negotiations for WBTV’s then-freshman East New York last spring that reportedly contained a request from the network for additional streaming rights.

There is no particular rush as CBS’ 2024-25 slate is already stacked with three new drama series, Matlock , pushed due to strike-related delays, NCIS: Origins and Watson.

Since the end of Cold Case after 156 episodes, Stiehm worked as an executive producer on Showtime’s Emmy-winning drama Homelan d and also co-developed and executive produced FX’s The Bridge , based on the Danish-Swedish format. She is repped by UTA and attorney Bruce Gellman.

In addition to CSI: Vegas , currently in its third season, JBTV has sophomore CBS drama series Fire Country , which has been renewed for a third season and is eying a potential Sheriff-centered spinoff. The company is repped by CAA.
