A Focus on the life of Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Elizabeth was born at 2.40am on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The Princess was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary at Buckingham Palace on 29 May that year.

At the time of her birth, Princess Elizabeth’s grandfather, King George V, was on the throne, and she was third in the line of succession, after her uncle, Edward, Prince of Wales, and her father, the Duke of York. In 1930, Princess Elizabeth gained a sister, with the birth of Princess Margaret.

Princess Elizabeth spent her early years in London. In 1932, when she was six years old the family moved to Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park.

In 1936 Princess Elizabeth’s life changed dramatically. Her grandfather, King George V, died and her uncle came to the throne as King Edward VIII, but, before the end of the year, he had decided to give up the throne in order to marry the woman he loved, Mrs Wallis Simpson. Upon his abdication, Princess Elizabeth’s father acceded to the throne as King George VI, and Princess Elizabeth became first in line to the throne. In 1937 the two Princesses attended their parents’ Coronation in Westminster Abbey.

The Second World War began in 1939, and a year later, at the height of the Blitz, the Princesses were moved for their safety to Windsor Castle, where they spent most of the war years. Princess Elizabeth was educated at home. She studied constitutional history and law as preparation for her future role as monarch, was instructed in religion by the Archbishop of Canterbury and learned French from a number of French and Belgian governesses.

Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip first met in 1934. When the Princess was 21, their engagement was announced on 9 July 1947 and the couple were married in Westminster Abbey on 20 November the same year.

On 6 February 1952, King George VI died following a prolonged illness. Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne, becoming Queen Elizabeth II. The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, attended by 8,251 guests, including the Prime Ministers and leading citizens of the other Commonwealth countries and representatives of foreign states. Crowds of people viewed the procession all along the route despite heavy rain. The ceremony was broadcast to 11 million listeners on the radio, and, for the first time, the ceremony was televised around the world – 27 million people in the UK alone tuned in to watch.

Lesson Plan: The Life and Legacy of Queen Elizabeth II

Britain’s longest-reigning monarch died on Thursday at the age of 96. Learn about her seven-decade reign, as well as what is next for the British monarchy.

The Legacy of Elizabeth II: The Media Queen

Queen elizabeth ii, the longest-reigning monarch in british history, died at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy that blended the ancient and the modern with the help of mass media..

“It’s inevitable that I should seem a rather remote figure to many of you. When I was 21, I pledged my life to the service of our people. I am glad to have had the chance to witness and to take part in many dramatic changes in life, in this country. And with the support of my family, rededicate myself to the service of our great country.” “Queen Elizabeth II ushered the monarchy into a new and radically different era. Her reign blended the ancient and the modern. When she became queen, the country was still reeling from the memory of the Second World War. Her coronation in 1953 was the first royal event of its kind to be broadcast live on television. And it offered the British hope that something better was in the offing.” [cheering] “By then, the royal family was accustomed to broadcasting its message. In 1940, as Princess Elizabeth, the queen gave her first radio address.” “Thousands of you in this country have had to leave your homes and be separated from your fathers and mothers.” “She was age 14, and Britain faced what Churchill called its finest hour in the war against Germany. Newsreel clips showed her parents inspecting the damage of bombing attacks on London.” “And the knowledge that their king and queen are among them, they were actually caught in a raid and had to take shelter during this particular visit, has greatly heartened the people.” “The royals understood the power of imagery, and television showed what the monarchy did best. The pageantry that celebrated its position, reinforcing its stature and the vital mystique that underpinned it.” “For the first time since her coronation, we saw the great state coach, ornate, gilded, richly painted. Perhaps the world’s most beautiful anachronism.” “This was technology that molded and massaged the information that reached the public about an ancient and distant institution. In the more than 60 years of the queen’s reign, the empire shrank back essentially to its island core, and she came to preside over a different nation, far less ready to acknowledge her, far less deferential, more assertive, more wealth-driven, greedier some people thought. It became increasingly important to use mass media and television where radio had sufficed in the past to control the royal narrative and uphold its importance. Above all, she created the impression of a royal household headed by a woman beyond all reproach, whose behavior was never, ever questioned. But upholding this image was not easy.” “We interrupt this film to tell you we are getting reports that Diana,” “Princess of Wales has died” “after a car crash in Paris.” “They were apparently being pursued by paparazzi on two motorcycles.” “After the death of Princess Diana in 1997, the Queen almost lost public sympathy irrevocably, seeming very, very distant, almost aloof. She appeared reluctant to respond to a yearning among the public for her to acknowledge the national mood of mourning. It was several days before she finally went on television and addressed the nation.” “Since last Sunday’s dreadful news, we have seen throughout Britain and around the world an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana’s death.” “Then, most tellingly of all, she stood in front of the gates of Buckingham Palace as the funeral cortege went by and lowered her head in acknowledgment of Diana’s immense popularity. Royal heads of state do not generally bow to other people, other people bow to them. And here she was in public, her head bowed, and that helped the monarchy begin to restore its image. As information became more readily available on computer screens and smartphones, the royal family established its own website. It took an account on Twitter. It used YouTube to broadcast its bigger moments.” [cheering] “You would find scripted, cautiously laid-out material that was designed overwhelmingly to create and reinforce the impression that this was a family at the service of the nation itself.” “Hip, hip, hooray!” “They wanted to make sure that they didn’t say the wrong things, that they kept their mystique. But that became harder and harder to do, and the junior members of the royal family made that harder to achieve. Prince Harry, her grandson, and Meghan Markle had decided to leave the royal family and set up a separate life for themselves in California. They went on to make various accusations against the royal family during a television interview with Oprah Winfrey.” “Months when I was pregnant, we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” “The impact of the new technology had been reversed. The monarchy now was the target from within its own ranks. This happened about the same time as Prince Philip was in hospital, and it seemed like a double challenge to the queen. But as much as she needed to communicate, she remains sparing in her public utterances. Less was always more.” “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, his Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.” “The death of Prince Philip was portrayed as a national tragedy. The couple had been married for 73 years. It was a relationship that had fused with the image of the monarchy. There was always the queen leading the way, with Philip a step behind as protocol required. Emotionally, though, he was at her side. The loss of her husband produced a tremendous outpouring of public sympathy. She responded at first with seclusion, then with the resumption of royal duties.” [laughing] “By and large, the queen’s tenure modernized the royal family without shedding its extraordinary privilege. It changed the way the world perceived the ancient institution and the way the institution reacted to the world. But at its heart, the monarchy remained ambivalent, bereft of executive power, reigning only with the tacit assent of its subjects, yet central to Britain’s sense of itself. Looking back, one is tempted to think, What was it? When did the queen define how she saw her role? And you could probably say in one speech in 1957.” “I cannot lead you into battle. I do not give you laws or administer justice, but I can do something else. I can give you my heart.” “This would be her legacy as her reign came to an end, the longest rule of any British monarch.”

Lesson Overview

Featured Video: “ The Legacy of Elizabeth II: The Media Queen ” by Nailah Morgan, Will Lloyd, Alan Cowell and Robin Stein

Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday at the age of 96.

In her obituary , The New York Times wrote that her “reign of almost seven decades survived tectonic shifts in Britain’s post-imperial society, inspired broad affection for her among her subjects and weathered successive challenges posed by the romantic choices, missteps and imbroglios of her descendants.”

In this lesson, you will examine Queen Elizabeth’s life and legacy through multimedia. First we invite you to view photos and watch an eight-minute video detailing her 70-year reign. Then you can go further by reading articles and Opinion essays that explore what happens next for the monarchy, the queen’s portrayal in pop culture, the history of the British Empire and more.

How the Royal Family Is Honoring Queen Elizabeth II on Second Anniversary of Her Death

King Charles III And Queen Camilla Host Diplomatic Reception

O n the second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death , the royal family is honoring the former monarch in their own fashion.

King Charles III, 75, and his wife Queen Camilla, 77, were seen attending Crathie Kirk church, which is the royal family’s place of worship when they stay at the Balmoral estate in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II was a regular attendee before her death at 96 years old on Sept. 8, 2022.

Her passing was followed by a funeral viewed by more than 29 million viewers in the U.K . It also marked the ascension of her son Charles to the throne, though he was officially crowned in May 2023 .

The royal family’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) posted its own tribute to the Queen, sharing a photograph of her smiling at a Buckingham Palace summer party in 2019. The accompanying caption read: “Remembering Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022.”

On the first anniversary of the Queen’s death in 2023, the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, lead their own tributes during a small service in Wales at St. David's Cathedral. Outside of the post on the royal family’s social media page, the couple has yet to publicly comment on the significant date this year.

The U.K. Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, honored the late Queen in a post on X . “Today marks two years since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The late Queen’s dedication to the U.K. and Commonwealth taught us that whatever challenges our country faces, the value of service always endures,” he wrote. “For the 70 glorious years of her reign, she was at the heart of this nation’s life. Today we honour her memory.”

In tandem with the anniversary, the U.K. government’s Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee issued a press release announcing that the new national memorial to the late Queen will be erected at St James’s Park in London. The committee, which was established by the U.K. Government and Royal Household in 2023, considered many potential spots for the official memorial, but opted for St James’s Park due to its “historical significance and personal connection to the late Queen.”

“It is only right that the memorial is situated in a location that represents the scale of her role at the heart of British society, and provides a place of reflection for the public,” said the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Rt Hon Pat McFadden.

The release made it clear that the government is in the early stages of memorial construction, but that later this year, more intensive discussions with architects and artists about design proposals will begin. The official design, according to the committee, is set to be announced in 2026, when the Queen would have turned 100 years old.

Queen Elizabeth II memorial site has been revealed. It will be walking distance from Buckingham Palace

September 7, 2024 / 8:37 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

A new national memorial to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II  has found its future home.

The British government said Saturday the memorial will be placed in London's St. James' Park , which holds "historical and constitutional significance and personal connection to the late monarch.

"The memorial is intended to provide not only a fitting monument but also a space for contemplation and community and will be an appropriate scale and ambition to match the impact of Queen Elizabeth II on national life, The Commonwealth and indeed the rest of the world," the government said in a statement.

The site for the memorial is close to the ceremonial route of The Mall and to Buckingham Palace, the home of her son King Charles III. It is also near statues of the late monarch's parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

The location also means that tourists visiting Buckingham Palace will only have a short walk to see the monument commemorating Britain's longest-reigning monarch.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the queen's "enduring legacy of service and devotion to our country will never be forgotten.

"The national memorial will be located in St James's Park, right in the heart of the capital, providing everyone with a place to honor the Late Queen and connect with the shared history we cherish," he added.

The memorial is expected to take the form of a statue or sculpture, though the final design is expected to be revealed by the centenary of Elizabeth's birth in 2026, CBS News partner BBC reported .

There will be other memorial projects in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Sunday marks the two-year anniversary of the death of Elizabeth, who spent a record 70 years and 214 days on the throne. She is interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel , which is in the larger St. George's Chapel in Windsor.

Queen Elizabeth II Aqura Bennett and Namrata Marjit Class 8-2

Queen Elizabeth’s early background? Queen Elizabeth was born April 21,1926, in Mayflower, London, England. She also has a younger sister, who was Princess Margaret. Queen Elizabeth’s grand father was King George the fifth. Unfortunately, when Queen Elizabeth was nine years old her grand father had died. After, her grandfather passed away; her parents wanted her to an education about the royal standards, which was the British constitution, and political matters. While she was learning about these she was home schooled by a governess. Then, when Queen Elizabeth was Queen already her younger sister Princess Margaret had Passed.

What makes Queen Elizabeth a good leader? Queen Elizabeth’s career is to be the second Queen Elizabeth of England and sit on the throne. Apparently, she had accomplished her goal to become the Queen of England. Also, when she was young her father was the Duke of York. She was married to her long distance cousin who was the prince of Greek ( prince Philip), together they had three children. Their names were Charles prince of whales, Princess Andrew Duke of York, and prince Edward.

Why should people admire her? Although queen Elizabeth is just the Queen of England, she should be admired for many reasons. We think that she should be admired because she was the Queen of England. She is an thoughtful person. She went to the hospitals in Africa to visit the people with A.I.D.S. and H.I.V. She also felt bad for them. Lastly, she is just an wonderful person overall.
