Students can commence with their Master thesis when the admission requirements of the respective Examination Regulations have been fulfilled. The form required for registering the Master thesis is available from the Central Examination Office (ZPA), which will also check fulfillment of the admission requirements. Only in exceptional cases will the ZPA grant admission before fulfillment of the admission requirements, e.g. when only one mandatory module still has to be completed. In such cases, a written application must be made to the Examination Board. The application must have been approved beforehand by the academic member of staff who provided the topic for the Master thesis

The required form for registering the Master thesis needs to be signed by the student, the professor, the chairperson of the Examination Board, and the Central Examination Office (ZPA). Due to this procedure, approximately 2 weeks will elapse before the registration process is complete.

The completed Master thesis must be submitted threefold:

  • two (paper-based) copies including a digital version for both of the assessors
  • one digital version (preferably a CD) for the archives

The three versions are submitted to the Central Examination Office, which will check that the submission deadline has been complied with

Please use the following Form for the digital CD version

Wussten Sie, dass ...

Was muss ich beachten?

Below you find information about all types of scientific papers that are written in the different courses of study at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. These papers include project research papers, bachelor's theses, and master's theses. All information can also be found in the respective examination regulations for the bachelor ’s programs and the master ‘s programs. The examination regulations are only available in German.

General informations

Where can the thesis be written.

Typically, research papers and projects are completed at a research institute of the faculties offering the course of study. In addition, it is possible to complete a paper or project at an external institution.

External institutions include all institutions, institutes, universities, and industry companies that are not part of the faculties offering the course of study. Generally all external work must be approved by the Examination Board and issued and supervised by a chair of Faculty 4. Course-specific exceptions are listed below.

Who supervises the work?

The supervising professor (betreuende:r Professor:in) is typically a professor or private lecturer of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or of the School of Business and Economics (only Business Administration and Engineering students) at RWTH Aachen University. An external supervisor (externe_r Betreuer_in) is a supervisor at the site of the external project or paper (e.g., heads of department, a professor at another faculty). External supervisors can only act as second examiners if they are professors or private lecturers at a German academic university and are appointed as such by the relevant examination board. In all other cases, the faculty-internal supervisor and a second examiner issue the grade.

For students of Business Administration and Engineering, interdisciplinary scientific theses whose topics include both engineering and economics can be jointly supervised by a professor from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and a professor from the School of Business and Economics. Both professors determine the first and second supervisor of the thesis and participate jointly in the final colloquium. The first supervisor determines the formal requirements for the scientific work in consultation with the second supervisor.

How do I register my thesis?

You will find the corresponding registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) in our download section below. These must always be completed in full and signed in the order indicated (large numbers in the signature fields). Business Administration and Engineering students whose topic for the thesis is purely economic and is issued by a professor of Faculty 8 do not need the approval of the specialization supervisor. The registration deadline is generally the date on which the registration form is signed by the professor supervising the student.

What do I have to consider if I want to write my thesis externally?

If you want to write your thesis externally, approval must be obtained from the Examination Board. Registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) of external theses can be submitted by email , sent to the faculty by mail or dropped into the "red mailbox" (Eilfschornsteinstraße 18, 52062 Aachen, first floor). Documents should not be additionally submitted as originals if they have already been sent to the Examination Board by email. Digitally submitted registration forms must be signed or digitally signed.

After processing by the Examination Board, the registration form will be returned to you by email. A copy of the document will also be sent directly to the ZPA so that your thesis can be registered in the campus management system and the deadline can be announced.

Where can I find postings for papers and theses?

A list of announced scientific papers of the chairs and institutes of Faculty 4 can be found here .

If you have any further questions, please contact the Study Counseling Service by email or in person during office hours .

The fourth term consists of a Master project. Different Master thesis topics will be announced at the beginning of the Aachen winter term and will also be presented during the presentation day. Topics are offered by TU Delft, ETH Zurich, and RWTH Aachen University, as well as external projects by companies and research facilities with a collaboration with one of the corresponding universities. The student has to choose one topic offered by each university or the company a corresponding university is collaborating with and set their preferences on a scale of one to three.

General Proceedings

RWTH Aachen University utilises an online tool for Master’s thesis proposals. The student gets access to the tool and the offered Master’s thesis projects at the end of September/beginning of October. To give the student the opportunity to get more insights in the projects and get into contact to the supervisors, the projects are presented at the master’s thesis presentation day at end of October/beginning of November. Afterwards, the students have to set their three most favoured master’s thesis projects in the online tool. The choice is changeable until the deadline. One of the three projects must be supervised by TU Delft, one by ETH Zurich and one by RWTH Aachen University. After the students set their choice, the Joint Examination Board assigns the master’s thesis projects to the students based on their choice.

External Projects

If you are interested in a thesis offered by an external company or research facility, you have to apply for interviews which will usually take place at the Master’s thesis presentation day. Therefore, you have to send your applications via email to the corresponding supervisor with [email protected] in cc before the deadline. Unless stated otherwise, your application should contain:

  • abrief motivation letter;
  • a list of your current grades (optional)

For Master’s thesis projects offered by the three partner universities, no application is required.

Self-Arranged Thesis Project

You have also the opportunity to arrange your Master’s thesis project yourself (e.g. arranged during a previous internship). As such, you have to

  • find a principal supervisor at one of the three partner universities (additionally to your local supervisor in the company/research facility) and
  • propose your Master’s thesis project to the Joint Examination Board (send the master’s thesis proposal to [email protected] ). The Joint Examination Board will decide if the proposal is accepted.

Note that the proposal has to have a clear link to geophysics.

Please be aware that this procedure takes some time, so please send your proposal in due time before the Master’s thesis presentation day.

Writing the Thesis

You may only begin your Master's thesis project once you have obtained at least 80 ECTS and the research project has been approved by the Joint Examination Board.

Furthermore you need to fulfil the criterion of "Scientific Integrity" . Note that this last criterion is only required for master students writing their master thesis at RWTH Aachen.

Should there be cogent grounds for a student not obtaining the required 80 ECTS, the Joint Examination Board may allow the Master's thesis project to begin earlier.

The Master's Project has to be finished within 20 weeks. A deadline extension can be granted if there are compelling arguments. All extensions for submitting master theses need to be approved by the IDEA League academic committee (i.e. the Joint Examination Board). If the submission of the thesis needs to be delayed by more than a few days, the main supervisor must also write a request to the Joint Examination Board which will then evaluate the case. The form of making the thesis available is governed by local regulations. However, the exact form of thesis submission at due date can vary according to the preference of the principal supervisor and academic co-examiner from one of the partner universities. The co-examiner for each Master's Project will be assigned during the Master's thesis period.

Each Master's thesis is assessed by an ad hoc thesis committee which normally consists of two scientists, one of whom is the principal supervisor and one from a partner university. The ad hoc thesis committee might be extended to additional members (e.g. the external supervisors from external Master's thesis projects) without voting right. The ad hoc thesis committee makes recommendations concerning the grades (A to F) to be given to the thesis and the defence (totalling 30 ECTS). The final decision concerning the grades is the responsibility of two committee members with voting right.

FAQs regarding Electrical Engineering, Information Technology & Computer Engineering (M.Sc.)

How many credit points do i have to achieve in the module groups.

For the majors of Communications Engineering (COMM), Computer Engineering (COMP), Micro- and Nanoelectronics (MINA), Biomedical Systems Engineering (BMSE) and Systems and Automation (SYAT):

Catalogue - Credit Points CORE - 16 CP ELECTIVE - 24 CP Project or Lab in major - 4 CP Graded Seminar FB6 - 4 CP GENERAL - 8 CP ADDITIONAL - 12 Industrial internship (18 weeks) - 18 CP Internship related seminar - 4 CP Master thesis - 30 CP _____________ Total: 120 CP

For the Electrical Power Engineering (EPEN) major:

Catalogue - Credit Points CORE - 20 CP ELECTIVE - 20 CP Project or Lab in major - 4 CP Graded Seminar FB6 - 4 CP GENERAL - 8 CP ADDITIONAL - 12 CP Industrial internship (18 weeks) - 18 CP Internship related seminar - 4 CP Master thesis - 30 CP _____________ Total: 120 CP It is possible to take additional modules from the CORE area instead of modules from the ELECTIVE area.

Which subjects can I take in the ADDITIONAL module group? How do I register for these?

The ADDITIONAL module group contains ungraded examinations in terms of additional qualifications amounting to 12 CP. The result is "passed" or "failed".

In all majors, two intensive German language courses (8CP) must be taken at the RWTH Language Center in this module group. If German language skills of at least level B1 can be proven at the beginning of the study program, students can be exempted from the mandatory participation in the German courses. Please submit proof of this to the examination board. Students who have learned German as their native language or have obtained their study qualification or first university degree at a German-speaking institution do not need to submit further proof. In case of exemption from the mandatory German courses, the 8CP must be covered by other subjects from the ADDITIONAL area.

Courses can be chosen from the RWTH including the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. These may include:

  • Courses from other faculties of RWTH Aachen University, (e.g. Business and Economics, Mechanical Engineering or the Language Center), which can be completed with a certificate of individual achievement (Leistungsnachweis/LN) with equivalent semester hours per week (SWS). A certificate of attendance “Teilnahmebescheinigung” does not suffice. In addition to lectures with the corresponding examination, these can also be projects (e.g. Leonardo), labs or other didactic forms (language courses, soft skills) - in each case according to available capacities (at least 4 CP to a maximum of 12 CP, the 8 CP of the obligatory German language courses also count in this area).
  • Modules from the subject catalogs CORE and ELECTIVE of all majors as well as from the GENERAL catalog of the Master degree program in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Engineering (max. 4 CP)
  • One additional seminar/lab/project from our faculty (max. 4 CP)

In the case of subjects for which admission is restricted, the possibility of participation must first be clarified with the lecturer.

There are two possibilities for the registration of subjects for the module group ADDITIONAL:

  • You ask the Central Examination Office (ZPA) to add the corresponding module to the ADDITIONAL study context. If no consent of the lecturer is required, the subject can then be registered normally modularly via RWTHonline.
  • The subject can also be registered directly via the chair. After successful completion, you will usually receive a document called "Leistungsnachweis LN", which will be processed at the Central Examination Office. For this purpose, please submit the application "Recognition in the field ADDITIONAL" from the download area .
  • Your proof of achievement can also be recorded by means of free registration in RWTHonline.

If you would like to have achievements credited that you passed while still enrolled in the Bachelor program, please also submit the grade transcript that you received with your degree certificate.

How many credits will I receive for subjects in the ADDITIONAL area?

For modules that originate from our study program, you will receive the CP that are designated for this subject.

For language courses offered by the RWTH Language Center, the following rules apply:

  • for compulsory German language courses of 4 SWS you will receive 4 CP, for compulsory German language courses of 8 SWS you will receive 8 CP
  • for all other language courses CP = SWS+1
  • Exception: For language intensive courses with 4SWS one receives 6 CP

The crediting of modules of other faculties depends on various factors and does not necessarily correspond to the crediting in the core study program. If you are unsure, please contact the examination board.

Do I have to complete the module "Scientific Integrity"?

All Master degree students who have taken up their studies from the winter semester 2020/21 onwards are required to successfully complete the module "Scientific Integrity". Master degree students who enrolled prior to the winter semester 2020/21 are not required to take the module, but we recommend that all Master degree students take this online course.

The module module is a prerequisite for the admission of the Master thesis and is offered via a recurring RWTHmoodle room. This contains all contents (slides, videos, literature) in German as well as in English. Registration is done via the corresponding RWTHonline course. A "final fail" is not intended.

I would like to deregister from the next exam date. How do I do that?

You can deregister online via RWTHonline up to three working days before the exam date. There is NO automatic re-registration. You have to re-register yourself if you want to take the exam at a later date! In case of illness on the day of the exam, you must submit a certificate to the ZPA stating that you are unable to take the exam (you are “prüfungsunfähig”). All further information as well as a form and how to submit it correctly can be found on the ZPA website .

Instructions for deregistering from exams can be found on the website of RWTH under FAQ on RWTH online .

You can find more information about deregistration on the website of the Central Examination Office .

In the official announcements you will find the legally binding examination regulations for your course of study. Please note that the German version is legally binding, English versions if available are only for information purposes.

Advice on this topic is also available from the Departmental Academic Advising  during the specified office hours, or at  [email protected].

I would like to deregister from a module for which I have not yet taken the examination and deselect it altogether because I would like to register for another module instead. What do I have to do?

First, you have to deregister from the exam in RWTHonline if you have already registered for it. Then send an e-mail with the request to deselect the module to your contact person at the ZPA .

We recommend that you always register for the course via the free registration procedure and only register for the examination via the study context.

I would like to permanently deregister from a module for which I have already taken an exam but failed (deselect it) because I want to choose another module instead. What do I have to do?

Provided you have not yet lost your right to examination, you can deregister (deselect) from a failed Master module in your Master program by submitting an application to the examination board. Please use the form Application for Examination Registration/De-registration from the download area and tick "Final deregistration of the examination". After approval of your application, you can then register for an alternative subject in RWTHonline.

I am doing my industrial internship soon. How can I register it?

The internship must be registered in the Internship Office. After the internship semester, the internship certificate and the internship report must be submitted to the Internship Office . Everything else about the procedure can be found in the FAQ of the Internship Office .

Where can I register for the internship related seminar?

The internship related seminar is the presentation on the practical semester, which is usually held at the chair where the Master thesis is also written. More information can also be found in the FAQ of the Internship Office .

An institute may also be assigned in special cases. Please contact the Internship Office.

When and how can I register the Master thesis?

The examination board has decided that until 30.09.2022 it is possible to register the Master thesis already with 52 credit points.

After this date, the Master thesis can be registered when 60 CP have been achieved in the program.

Students who have been admitted to the Master degree program with conditions must have passed all requirement subjects without exception when registering. Likewise, the module Scientific Integrity must be successfully passed.

If you meet the requirements (see above), contact the ZPA to obtain the registration form. You then hand this in to the institute where you write your Master thesis for further processing.

How can I find a topic for a Master thesis?

  • On the one hand, it is possible to find topics for a Master thesis via websites of the institutes and notices.
  • Alternatively, contact senior engineers or assistants for a possible topic.

I would like to write my Master thesis at another university/faculty/at an industry partner. Is that possible?

The Master thesis is an examination within the scope of studies at RWTH Aachen University and is usually written at one of the institutes of Faculty 6.

In exceptional cases, the Master thesis can also be written externally in a company or at another university. For this, the approval and supervision of a professor from Faculty 6 as well as the approval of the faculty's examination board is mandatory. Without this consent it is not possible to prepare the Master thesis externally - there is no right to an external Master thesis.

Should you wish to do a Master thesis externally, it is your task to find a professor from our faculty who will support your project. The first step towards an external Master thesis is to contact staff members of the institutes of our faculty, especially the senior engineers, and to clarify whether your project will be supported and supervised by the institute. The support of an external Master thesis is an exceptional case; the Master thesis should primarily have a part in the research projects of our faculty.

What do I have to do if I want to change my major?

During the course of your Master program, you can change your major once.

You can find the application "Antrag auf Änderung der Vertiefungsrichtung" in the download area , please submit it to the examination board.

Where can I find the examination regulations for my degree program?

You can find the examination regulations for your study program in the Official Announcements of RWTH Aachen University.

How can I exclude module grades from the calculation of my average grade?

You have two options for excluding module grades:

  • according to §8 para. 4 of the subject-specific examination regulations, one graded module can be converted into an ungraded module.
  • the deletion of the worst, weighted module grade is possible according to §10 para. 13 of the general examination regulations, if all module examinations (including the master thesis) have been passed within the standard period of study of 4 semesters.

The cancellation of the grade(s) must be applied for no later than 1 week after the result of the last examination has been announced. For this purpose, please use the form "Antrag auf Notenstreichung" from the forms database of the ZPA and submit it to the ZPA in due time. In case of late submission, the cancellation cannot be considered.

I have successfully completed my studies. How do I get my certificate now?

The certificates are issued by the Central Examination Office. You can find everything else about this procedure on the website of the ZPA .

General Thesis Info

The following article summarizes some general information about theses at the Knowledge-Based Systems Group. That is, we’ll discuss how to arrive at a topic and whom to talk to for the same.

Formal Restrictions

In general, there are no special formal restrictions to do a thesis at KBSG, however, as much previous knowledge in our topics as possible obviously helps. Many topics require the content of at least one of our introductory lectures. Sometimes a proper (but potentially lengthy) orientation phase with a review of particular literature to get into the topic is just fine.

An overview about theses and completed, running, and maybe even open topics can be found at https://kbsg.rwth-aachen.de/theses At KBSG, more often than not, we do not have ready-to-go topics available. Instead, we rather try to develop and tailor a topic specifically for a student starting from what is best described as a fuzzy idea on a problem or a general direction. Our website offers an overview of the spectrum of topics that we deal with. It can roughly be divided into more practical topics (often with robotics as an application) and more theoretical topics with (foundations of) knowledge representation at their heart.

To get more information towards arriving at a topic you are invited to contact one of our staff members that will then most likely become your advisor. Contact information are given on our staff page: https://kbsg.rwth-aachen.de/staff Who to turn to depends on the area of your topic. Besides the existing theses linked about it’s worth taking a look at our publication page at https://kbsg.rwth-aachen.de/biblio

The general procedure then looks as follows: You start with a literature review and orientation for about two month. In that time you write a so-called proposal, which on about 20 pages summarizes the foundations, research questions, and goals of the thesis along with a schedule for the same. After a presentation (and acceptance) of the proposal you go register the thesis. More information is given on https://kbsg.rwth-aachen.de/theses/guidelines

Theses Guidelines

Bachelor’s thesis.

  • Proposal: up to 15 pages
  • Proposal Presentation: 20 minutes + 5 minutes for questions
  • Final Presentation: 25 minutes + 10 minutes for questions

Master’s Thesis

  • Proposal: up to 30 pages
  • Proposal Presentation: 25 minutes + 5 minutes for questions
  • Final Presentation: 35 minutes + 10 minutes for questions

General Procedure

Here’s the general procedure of a thesis at the Knowledge-Based Systems Group:

Orientation

Thesis work, final presentation.

Finally, we have some general remarks for you.

Theses at KBSG

The Knowledge-Based Systems Group constantly has offers for diploma, bachelor, and master theses on topics in all our research areas and projects. When specifying the particular thesis’ topic the advising research assistant and Prof. Lakemeyer of course try to account for the student’s personal interests and background. There are some general requirements that we impose on prospective thesis students:

  • successful participation of the KBSG’s introductory lecture(s)
  • extensive knowledge in knowledge representation, reasoning, artificial intelligence, and/or (cognitive) robotics
  • for the practical parts: strong working knowledge in programming either with Prolog or C++ or both.

If you are interested, please contact us.

It all begins with an orientation phase where you try to get familiar with the topic, start an own literature research and work towards a clear specification of the topic.

Once you are sufficiently into the topic, you should prepare a thesis proposal which is exactly what it sounds like: a proposal for a thesis work. You need to prepare both, a written paper of around 30 pages (~15 pages for bachelor theses) introducing the topic with a motivation, a presentation of related work, your idea(s), and a concept for evaluation, and a talk of 25 minutes + 5 minutes discussion (20+5 minutes for bachelor students) where you present your thesis proposal your dedicated supervisor(s) and to other people interested at KBSG.

When the proposal gets accepted, you can go register the thesis with ZPA and start working.

Once you completed the thesis it’s time to make a final presentation. This is where you present your thesis’ work, findings you made, and results you obtained. You have 35 minutes (+ 10 minutes for questions) as a master’s student and 25 minutes (+ 5 minutes for questions) as a bachelor’s student.

Master thesis

The master thesis can only be registered if 60 CP have been obtained and all additional courses that were given at the time of admission have been passed. For all students who begin their Master's studies from the winter semester 2020/2021 onwards, the module "Scientific Integrity" must also be passed before the Master thesis can be registered.

The processing time for the master thesis is 6 months during the course of study. The scope of the written draft should not exceed 80 pages without Annexes.

In general, the master thesis can be written by any chair that holds a teaching position in the degree program Transport Engineering and Mobility. If you are interested and if you meet the requirements, please contact the chairs directly.

Registration and recognition

After a topic has been coordinated with a chair, the master thesis must be registered at the central examination office. For this purpose, the Central Examination Office fills out a control sheet which is then handed over to the supervising chair.

With the signature of the professor of the supervising chair on the control sheet and the handing over of the exact proposal of the master thesis the processing time begins.

The master thesis must be submitted to the Central Examination Office in due time. At least two printed and bound copies must be handed in. The master thesis will be stamped there and then sent to the Chair. After submission of the document, a date will be set within the next eight weeks for an oral presentation of the results at the chair.

Information about master theses of the three organizing chairs can be found here:

Guideline of academic student thesis, sub-navigation.

  • Studentships & Promotions
  • Doubts about studies / change of subject

On the initiative of the student council, a guideline has been developed which contains information and guidelines for the preparation of student scientific papers at the Faculty of Civil Engineering; it is intended to serve as a uniform template for the students of the Faculty. At the same time, the chairs should be relieved of the burden of not having to create their own templates. The use of the guidelines is desired. The specifications of the chairs to the students may differ in detail.

Information about Thesis Process

A diploma or master’s thesis aims at demonstrating the student’s ability to apply computer science methods in a larger project mostly self dependently. In practical computer science, such projects often appear as extensions of larger software systems developed within scientific research projects at the chair. In such a case the thesis consists of an implementation part (including the documentation!) and a written elaboration on the theoretical foundations. A detailed discussion of computer science problems and an analysis of computer science methods that are used must always be at the center of the investigation. Even for more application-oriented theses, these issues have to be considered at least equally important to the analysis of the application area.

All the details below apply to a diploma as well as bachelor’s and master’s theses – they are not treated differently.

Orientation Phase and Proposal Presentation

Depending on the student’s previous knowledge an orientation phase precedes the thesis. This phase is intended to be used for

  • reviewing related work (literature),
  • becoming acquainted with the environment conditions for the implementation, and
  • clearly defining the problem which has to be tackled in the thesis.

The orientation phase results in an abstract (“proposal”) which is about 15-20 pages in length and has to include:

  • the well-defined problem to be solved and goals to be achieved,
  • a comparative study of first ideas for solution esp. with regard to related work (literature),
  • a short presentation of the chosen approach, and
  • a well calculated working plan.

This proposal is discussed with the tutors (professor and assistant) and therefore has to be presented in form of a so-called proposal presentation (duration approx. 30 min) at the I5 seminar at the end of the orientation phase. It is seen as a kind of a “contract” both sides can refer to. This is to avoid misunderstandings concerning the topic of the diploma thesis and a serious misjudgment of the workload (resulting in an excessive duration of the thesis). Consequently, a proposal is also enforced for external diploma theses where Prof. Decker is only the second reviewer.

Working on a Thesis

The work on the diploma thesis follows the detailed working plan established during the orientation phase: at first, the chosen approach has to be detailed. This step is then followed by the implementation of the approach, its analysis, and documentation. Eventually, the results have to be written down. The assessment of the thesis is based not only on the accurateness of the implementation and written elaboration but also on the student’s autonomy regarding defining the topic, reviewing the literature, and finding solutions. Additionally, a discerning review of design decisions and alternatives (from the computer science point of view and possibly also from the application-specific point of view) affects the assessment. For a practical thesis the following basic outline for the written elaboration can be used as a starting point (while it does in no way claim to be complete):

  • introduction to the topic of the thesis and clarification of the concrete task
  • review of literature on the given topic
  • given environmental constraints (hardware, software)
  • justification: why does the thesis make sense?
  • critically review literature: what can be used?
  • based on the previous chapter: develop a concept for the solution of the problem
  • this part must NOT contain any implementation details!
  • tool selection (e.g. programming language)
  • description of the implementation (no programming code, possibly architectural figures)
  • documentation of important design decisions
  • discerning evaluation of the realization: tests (performance etc.), possibly a case study, potential weaknesses of the implementation, reasonable extensions for the future, …
  • summary: what are the main results?
  • what do the results mean to the field of computer sciene?
  • outlook: what has to be done in the future?

The written elaboration is NOT documentation of the created programs. It shows the student’s ability to apply or develop computer science methods autonomously. Results taken from the literature have to be marked carefully to be distinguishable from the student’s own work. Programming notations like for example “if a=b then s1” must be formatted different from descriptive texts and other notations (e.g. mathematical expressions) to avoid misunderstandings. The thesis has to be written in English or German. A mixture of languages must be avoided.

Final Presentation

The final presentation takes place about 2-8 weeks after the final delivery. In contrast to the proposal presentation, the emphasis here is on the results achieved. The 20-45 minutes to be spent on the presentation should be used as follows:

  • short (!!) re-consideration of the problem
  • short review of relevant literature
  • presentation of the solution and to some degree also of design decisions
  • possibly a case study or application experiences

The latter two points are more important than the first two ones. While program code should not be presented, design decisions possibly can be explained. The student has to expect questions during and after the presentation.

Thesis presentation lengths (presentation time incl. Demo):

Your thesis advisor (usually a PhD student) should register a thesis presentation time slot with the respective thesis supervisor (usually a Professor).
