There are so many things for readers to learn from the series Harry Potter. It teaches us the importance of friendship. It teaches us that someone’s background doesn’t determine his or her value as a person and many more lessons. It also showed me that no one in this universe is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. I have learnt a lot from this great book. It remains one of the most precious treasures of mankind.

Good morning to all. Books are friends who never leave your side. I find this saying to be very true as books have always been there for me. I enjoy reading books. My favourite book is Iliad by Homer. The Iliad is an epic poem written by the Greek poet Homer. It tells the story of the last year of the Trojan War fought between the city of Troy and the Greeks. Achilles – Achilles is the main character and the greatest warrior in the world.

The Iliad teaches us many things, such as The importance of family is a central theme in the epic, the lovely scene of Hector with Andromache and his son is heartwarming all these years later.The friendship between Achilles and Patroclus is incredibly touching. The way Achilles fiercely and obsessively seeks vengeance for Patroclus has made many question if there was a romance between them.Priam losing his greatest son Hector and his supplication to Achilles to return his body so he and Troy can properly mourn its protector is another example of the theme of family.Achilles too lamenting his own father and how he shall never see him again, Priam and Achilles weeping together shows the futility of war as well as how family has affected these two enemies together.

The classics of Greece and Rome provide us with a set of connected stories and a cast of characters that teach us what it means to be human. They are also the basis of literature, teaching us about natural man (man at his best and worst, but natural man). They don’t give us the answers that we find in revelation, but they do give us the questions.

Books are wonderful – a bundle of pages with a cover on top brimming with content that stimulates the human imagination and helps us escape pressing reality. They are also beneficial to health. If you don’t like reading books, it’s definitely worth trying different genres until you find what interests you. Thank you for listening. I hope the speech was informative for you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a story that takes us back in time, to a small town in the 1930s. This is a time when people were struggling with the Great Depression. The book is written by Harper Lee. It presents a vivid picture of life and the challenges of that time.

One reason why I love this book is its characters. Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill are such lovable characters. They are just kids, full of curiosity, wild imaginations, and a sense of justice. Then there’s Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem’s father. He’s a lawyer, a soft-spoken man who respects all people, and who has a strong sense of right and wrong.

The language used in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is simple yet rich. Harper Lee has a way of making you feel like you are right there, in that small town, experiencing everything with the characters. She has a way of making you laugh, cry, and think deeply about the world around you.

Indeed, selecting one book out of the many I’ve read and marking it as my ‘favourite book’ is a daunting task. So, allow me to pick one from each of the genres I like.

Next would be the genre of crime, or rather, detective fiction. Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ is my favourite here. It is an absolute masterpiece! In classics, my favourite would easily be ‘Pride and Prejudice’, of course.

Books are our great buddies since they provide all the information about the world. One of my favourite books is ‘The Jungle Book’. Rudyard Kipling wrote ‘The Jungle Book’ in 1894. The story revolves around Mowgli, a human kid raised by wolves in a wild forest.

Bagheera, the loving panther, finds a small boy in the jungle and delivers him to the wolf pack. Mama wolf then raises Mowgli as her baby. Daddy wolf teaches Mowgli all the skills of the forest. Mowgli understands the jungle laws and spends most of his time with Baloo and Bagheera. Sher Khan, a dangerous tiger, wants to eat Mowgli. So Mowgli thinks of a plan to rescue himself and succeeds. Everybody in the forest gets happy.

Reading is something I enjoy doing. I’ve read many novels. But, one book holds a special place in my heart, my favourite book, Panchatantra, written by Vishnu Sharma. It has many stories with pictures. Every story has a moral which teaches something good and meaningful in life. I enjoy reading picture books, and this book offered me a variety of stories.

One of my favourite stories from Panchatantra is ‘The Foolish Lion And The Clever Rabbit’. Once upon a time, there was a greedy lion who used to kill animals. Everyone was afraid of him. To reduce the senseless killing, the animals requested the lion to spare them the fear and decided to send one animal to the lion each day. The lion agreed to this agreement. One day, the animals sent a rabbit. He was an intelligent creature. He reached the lion’s cave late and told him that another big lion had stopped him on the way. He told the greedy lion that this second lion was challenging him. The lion felt very angry and decided to teach a good lesson to the other lion. He asked the rabbit to take him to the place where he met the other lion. The clever rabbit took him to a well and told him that the other lion lived in that well. When the greedy lion looked inside the well, he saw his own reflection and mistook it for the second lion. He jumped into the well to attack his competitor but drowned. The rabbit saved himself and the entire forest because of his quick wit and cleverness.

There are many such stories of wit and intelligence in the Panchatantra books. They introduce us to virtues such as compassion, bravery, wisdom, mental presence, and togetherness.

Books are loyal companions that will never abandon you. This holds true for me because you can always find books with and around me.

Books can transport us to other universes without leaving our current location. Books also help us expand our creativity. My family and teachers always motivated me to read and instilled in me the value of books. The book I like most is the Panchatantra. It is an extremely fascinating book. I have finished the book, but I still continue to read it because it is so entertaining!

One of the most prominent Indian authors and scholars, Vishnu Sharma, wrote Panchatantra in Sanskrit in the 3rd century BC. The book was later translated into many different languages. It is a collection of several stories. Vishnu Sharma has done a good job of giving moral life lessons by showcasing the activity of animals. I enjoy the book because it has many stories I love and cherish.

My mother bought this book for me as my birthday present. When I first read this book, it captured my attention instantly. Panchatantra has a unique narration which makes it my favourite book. It teaches us how humble, loving, and caring people always succeed. The book also showcases how bad qualities like cunningness, jealousy, anger and cheating can get you into trouble.

Panchatantra is a narrative of several animal characters in various stories, including a lion named Pingalaka, two bulls named Karnataka and Sanjivaka, a fox named Damanaka, deer named Chars, and so many others. These animals showcase human behaviour that we come across in our daily life.

Even though the book has a variety of stories, the story of The Crab and The Stork is close to my heart. It teaches us about presence of mind and intelligence. The story begins with a stork that was searching for food but could not find any as he was old. Finally, he plans to catch a fish to eat. He goes to a pond and pretends to be sad and depressed. Seeing him gloomy, a fish and a crab ask him why he is upset. The stork makes up a story that humans were going to inhabit the pond to grow crops. They are convinced by this story and are worried about how to stop this. The stork takes all the fish, frogs and other marine animals out of the pond, and slyly uses them for his meal. Finally, it is the turn of the crab to go with the stork, but the crab is aware that his friends are dead. So, the crab uses his intelligence, grabs the stork’s neck, and kills him to save himself.

Panchatantra stories like this one have taught me to think before taking any action. The book educates me on optimism and how to see the brightness at the end of the tunnel. It has made me realise the value of being good to all in any situation.

Thinking about their favourite book will make children mentally revisit all the books they have read and enjoyed. It will also encourage them to analyse what they like about each of the books as they choose their favourite one and think of points to write about. Moreover, as children discuss their assignments in class, it will expose them to a whole new variety of books that they would like to add to their reading wishlist. This assignment will also make children understand the importance of reading for their overall learning. It will also give them good writing practice with a topic that they can enjoy. Reading my favourite book is like a magical journey into a world of exciting places and wonderful characters. I love my favourite book because it taught me the importance of friendship, adventures in life and some important life lessons. The protagonist in the story of my favourite book discovers special abilities while embarking on his journey of self-discovery. I aspire to do the same in my life. The story had lots of twists and turns and the protagonist had to show resilience and courage to sail through. I learnt about courage, loyalty, and friendship from this main character.

After reading my favourite book, my life changed a lot. I started seeing the world with a sense of wonder, and it influenced how I made my life choices. I became wiser at making important decisions in my everyday life. My favourite book and its main character served as an inspiration for me and turned me into someone who is now more open to welcoming life’s challenges and adventures.

The life’s intricacies are depicted through the rural lens and the diverse stories with different characters make it my all-time favourite book to read. Each time, when I want to get lost in the nuances of these beautiful fictional characters, the old societal dynamics, human relationships etc. I read this book.

In the present modern world, which is rapidly changing, my favourite book, ‘Malgudi Days’ serves as a poignant reminder of enduring human experiences which is the result of the simplistic life led by the characters. I believe his book will keep on resonating with its readers across generations. As modern society grapples with the challenges of complex lifestyles and fast-paced living, the narratives in ‘Malgudi Days’ encourage a pause to reflect on the significance of human connections, the value of simplicity, and the importance of embracing the ordinary joys of life.

My all-time favourite book to read is ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ by J. K. Rowling. This book is considered one of the classics and captivates readers from all age groups around the globe. When I first read this enchanting book, I was lost in the intricate magical world of Hogwarts. The book stirs up my imagination and becomes like a timeless gateway into a world of wonder. I also love J. K. Rowling’s distinctive writing style. She weaves the themes of friendship, courage, and the battle between good and evil so effortlessly. My favourite character from the novel is ‘Harry Potter’ who is also the protagonist of the story. Whenever I sit alone to read this book, the transformative journey of Harry Potter gives me false hope of some magical world. I get completely absorbed in the world of wizards and magical creatures. In my opinion, the author has artistically fabricated the world of magic where everything is possible through the means of magical spells.

One of the most prominent themes that runs throughout the course of the book is the theme of friendship. I enjoyed reading about the friendship which is exhibited between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. These three characters share a genuine friendship and the importance of forming genuine connections is emphasized by the author. It is through means of genuine bonds, that we can hope to overcome difficulties in life.

There are several other themes which are highlighted in my favourite book. The theme of courage which is exhibited by my favourite character, ‘Harry’ instils confidence in my mind as well. When Harry fights the three-headed dog to save his friends. I learnt how controlling fear can help us triumph over anything. The book also teaches us that good always wins over evil. The protagonist Harry also has a face-to-face incident with Lord Voldemort who is projected as the lord of darkness and evil. The book traces the complexities of morality and also reiterates the fact that humans always stand on the winning side if they are able to make the right choices and decisions. I often related to this theme mentioned in the book strongly as I get reminded of how worthy it is to have a strong, resilient mind to make the right choices for oneself in everyday life. There is an intricate description of magical landscapes in my favourite book of Harry Potter. The author has elaborated on the rich details of Hogwarts Castle, Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest. The humour, mystery, wonder and suspense created throughout the book is enough to captivate the minds of the readers. The witty dialogues and clever wordplay contribute to the overall enjoyment of the book. Whenever I read this book, I instantly get engaged in the unfolding plot even though I have read this book many times. The charm and wit of the main characters can entertain the reader over and over again.

I love reading this book because it has taught me to love magic within the ordinary and to never stop believing in the extraordinary. In my opinion, the book, ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone’ should be read by people who are deeply interested in learning core human values through the means of a magical world and its fictional characters.

Books are friends who will never abandon you. This saying rings true for me because books have always been there for me. I like to read books. They have the ability to transport us through worlds without requiring us to leave our current location. Books have the power to transport people all over the world without them having to leave their homes. My parents and teachers always encouraged me to read when I was younger. Harry Potter, on the other hand, will always be my favourite book.

J.K. Rowling, one of our generation's most eminent writers, wrote the Harry Potter series. These books depict the wizarding world and its operations. J.K. Rowling has done such a good job of painting a picture of this world that it feels real. Despite the fact that the series consists of seven books, I have a personal favourite. When I first started reading the book, it immediately piqued my interest. Despite having read all of the previous parts, none of the books piqued my interest as much as this one did.

The introduction of the other wizard schools is one of the things about this book that most excites me. The Triwizard Tournament concept is one of the most brilliant ideas I've seen in the Harry Potter series. In addition, some of my favourite characters appear in this book. Rowling's description of that character's aura and personality is simply brilliant. Furthermore, it made me a bigger fan of the series.Despite the fact that the books are set in the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains many lessons for young people to learn.

For starters, it teaches us the value of friendship. I've read a lot of books, but I've never come across a friendship like Harry, Hermoine, and Ron's. Throughout the books, these three musketeers stayed together and never gave up. It taught me the importance of having a good friend.Furthermore, the Harry Potter series taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone carries both good and evil within them. This aided me in making better decisions and becoming a better person. We see how even the most flawed characters, such as Snape, had goodness within them. Similarly, even the nicest characters, such as Dumbledore, had flaws. This altered my attitude toward people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books provided me with hope. They taught me what hope is and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the courage to hold on to hope even in the darkest of times, just as Harry had done his entire life. These are some of the most important lessons I took away from Harry Potter.In conclusion, while many films have been made based on the books. Nothing beats the essence and uniqueness of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any other form of media. As a result, The Goblet of Fire is still my favourite book.

There was also a spin-off to this sequel. It was named Charlie in the White House. However, the work remained unfinished.

They improve our knowledge, wisdom, and information, thus helping us in taking the right decisions in life.

Great Authors, writers, and poets put all their emotions, thoughts and experience to make books important and beneficial for us. The treasure of books is inexhaustible, as they continuously extract the gold of art, literature, science, and philosophy for us. Books pass the knowledge from generation to generation which ultimately helps in the advancement of civilizations.

Types of Books

There are mainly two types of books, one is fictional while other is non-fictional. Fictional books are completely based on the author’s imagination, on the other hand, non-fictional are about a particular person, story, News or information. The different age group of people prefers different types of books like religious, comical, fantasy and educational.

The corporate world generally prefers business magazines and journals. Books under subcategory educational and guides, horoscope and scientific, articles and essays and many more. Generally, popularity in books depends on the age group and the mindset of people. I always take the suggestions made by my teachers and parents into account while choosing a book. Some days back, my uncle gave me one as a birthday gift as he knows my love for books. It is called The Mahabharata’ and has been written in English by Anand Sagar Chowdhry and published by Goodwill Publishing House, Delhi.

When I went through the first chapter, a fascinating story unfolded itself. King Satyavan married the daughter of a washerman and his son from the first wife took a pledge to remain a bachelor all his life. He came to be known as Bhishma Pitamah. The story was so eventful that it was very difficult to keep pace with the individual events.

The battle between the Kauravas and Pandavas is so well known that it need not be repeated. In the middle of the epic stands The Gita which serves as a lighthouse. It sheds light on the theme of the whole story. The language is so poetic that one floats in its divine stream. Lord Krishna tells us to perform our duties without having any expectations about the rewards.

We should forget the sense of affection as it blurs our minds while performing our duties and meeting out justice. We should strive for excellence in whatever we do. This body is short-lived but the soul is eternal. It never dies. It keeps on changing bodies just as we keep on changing clothes. Fire cannot burn the soul nor can the sword cut it. When death is a must, why should we be afraid of it?

It was this “celestial song” ‘Gita’ that helped Arjuna to perform his duty boldly and fearlessly, keeping his personal affections at bay. छपाई कला के आविष्कार के बाद पुस्तक प्रकाशन के क्षेत्र में क्रांति आ गई । प्रत्येक वर्ष हजारों पुस्तकों का प्रकाशन होने लगा । शैक्षणिक ऐतिहासिक धार्मिक वैज्ञानिक जैसे विविध विषयों में छपी अनगिनत पुस्तकों में से किसी एक प्रिय पुस्तक का चुनाव करना बहुत कठिन होता है ।

मेरे दादाजी पुस्तक प्रेमी व्यक्ति थे । उन्होंने घर में कई महत्त्वपूर्ण पुस्तकों का संग्रह कर रखा था । एक दिन मेरी नजर इनमें से एक पुस्तक पंचतंत्र पर पड़ी । एक बार पढ़ना आरंभ किया तो पड़ता ही चला गया । इसकी प्रत्येक कहानी मुझे शिक्षाप्रद एव रोचक लगी ।

मुझे लगा यह कोई साधारण पुस्तक नहीं ज्ञान का खजाना है । मैंने इसे कई बार पढ़ा । यह मेरी सर्वाधिक प्रिय पुस्तक है । विष्णु शर्मा द्वारा रचित पुस्तक पंचतंत्र को भारतीय समाज और संस्कृति का दर्पण कहा जा सकता है । पूरी की पूरी शिक्षा कहानियों के माध्यम से दी गई है ।

कहानियाँ अनेक हैं परतु इन कहानियों को मित्रों के संवाद के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है । इनका आपस में जुड़ाव अनूठा है । पंचतंत्र की कहानियों के अधिकांश पात्र घरेलू तथा वन्य जीव-जंतु हैं । बैल ऊँट सियार शेर हाथी गदहा कबूतर चूहा साँप मगरमच्छ बंदर कौवा आदि पशु-पक्षियों को पात्र बनाकर रची गइ प्रत्येक कहानी में जीवन की वास्तविकता छिपी हुई है ।

सच्चा मित्र कौन है इसकी क्या पहचान है धूर्त लोगों की क्या पहचान होती है बुद्धि के प्रयोग से किस प्रकार कठिन से कठिन कार्य को सरल बनाया जा सकता है, इत्यादि तथ्यों का पुस्तक में खुलासा किया गया है । लोभी मनुष्यों की कैसी दुर्गति होती है, बुजुर्गों का उचित परामर्श न मानकर लोग किस प्रकार के संकट में फँसते हैं, जिन लोगों को छोटा समझ कर अपमानित किया जाता है, वे समय पाकर भकर प्रतिशोध लेते हैं ऐसी अनेक शिक्षाएँ पंचतंत्र की कहानियों का आधार हैं ।

चूँकि शिक्षा कहानियों के माध्यम से दी गई है, अत: यह कहीं से भी बोझिल प्रतीत नहीं होती है । मैं जब भी किसी दुविधा या मुश्किल में होता हूँ झट मुझे पचतत्र की याद आती है । इसकी किसी न किसी कहानी में मेरी समस्या का समाधान छिपा होता है । मैं समझता हूँ यह पुस्तक मेरी भांति अन्य व्यक्तियों की शंका का निवारण करने में पूरी तरह सक्षम है ।

मन के विभिन्न भावों का प्रस्तुतिकरण पुस्तक में बड़े ही सहज ढंग से किया गया है । सचमुच विष्णु शर्मा एक महान साहित्यकार ही नहीं अपितु महान मनोवैज्ञानिक भी थे । यही कारण है कि संस्कृत भाषा में लिखी गई पुस्तक पंचतंत्र का अनुवाद विश्व की लगभग सभी भाषाओं में हो चुका है ।

पूरे संसार में पंचतंत्र की कहानियाँ बड़े चाव से पड़ी जाती हैं । बच्चों की पाठ्‌य पुस्तकों में भी पंचतंत्र की कहानियों को शामिल किया गया है । वर्तमान समय में हालाकिं ज्ञान-विज्ञान का काफी विस्तार हो गया है, फिर भी लोगों की समस्याएँ ज्यों की त्यों बनी हुई हैं । बहुत से मनुष्य इन समस्याओं से घबरा जाते हैं । इन स्थितियों में पंचतंत्र की कहानियाँ उनकी सहायता कर सकती हैं ।

उनके हृदय में आशा का संचार हो सकता है । पुस्तक पढ़कर ढोंगी, पाखंडी, दुश्चरित्र, निर्दयी तथा कृतप्न मनुष्यों की पहचान करने में तथा इनसे अपना बचाव करने में मदद मिल सकती है । दूसरी ओर पुस्तक के माध्यम से सीधे-सादे, निष्कपट, मधुरभाषी, सच्चरित्र और कृतज्ञ मनुष्यों के गुणों को धारण करने में भी मदद मिलती है । उपरोक्त गुणों के आधार पर ही यह मेरी सबसे प्रिय पुस्तक है ।

Books are the treasure of knowledge. They are the most valuable in the world. It has priceless treasure which can’t be snatched by anyone, never divided and stolen. I have read a number of books but I like “Muna Madan.”

‘Muna Madan’ is a story of Muna and Madan. It is a love story book like Laila Majnu. Madan, due to his poor economic condition, was forced to go to Tibet to earn money. After a few years, when he was returning home with his friends, he got a fever on the way and his friend left him to die. Fortunately, he was met by a local person. He was cared for, treated and at last his life was saved. Madan touched his feet and said, “Man can be great not on the basis of caste but on the basis of his behavior.” He further said, “Food can’t be sweet without hunger.” The poem is composed in such a melody that anyone can shade tears while reading it. His friend told his wife Muna that Madan died on the way while he was returning home. She couldn’t tolerate this sad news and died before Madan returned home. In her absence, he sang a tragedy song, and later the story was completed.

The book, though, based on tragedy, gives many important lessons to people. It removes the distance between rich and poor. It removes the feeling of racial discrimination. He also said, “The great thing in society is to serve others.” By serving others we can feel satisfaction and pleasure. Our thinking should be above personal interest. We should devote to help and serve mankind which finally justifies to a human being.

Finally, not more than 10 times I went through the poem. But it always looks interesting. I’m proud of the book and can never forget “Muna Madan.”

I love reading and my favourite book is from the Geronimo Stilton series, written by the Italian author Elisabetta Dami. ‘Geronimo Stilton – The Hunt for the Golden Book’ is filled with adventures and is an exciting read. The story of the book starts with the central character, Geronimo Stilton, celebrating a successful stint of 10 years of writing. Grandfather Williams throws a party to celebrate, and Geronimo decides to write a book for this occasion. However, his laptop seems to be missing. So, Geronimo and his friends embark on a journey to find his computer and print the new book, just before the party starts. The book captures the interest of young readers and also provides them a bonus read at the end. There is an extra mini mystery at the end of the book, named ‘The Lake Monster’ that has an equally exciting storyline.

I am very fond of reading books and one of my recent favourites is ‘BFG’ by Roald Dahl. The story starts with a little girl named Sophie being kidnapped by a big friendly giant (BFG) from the orphanage where she stays. She had seen him blowing good dreams into the windows of children that night.

Although she thought she would be eaten by the giant, he was not like the other giants in Giant Country who gobbled up little children. The BFG was a nice and gentle giant who spent his life blowing happy dreams to little children. He spoke a funny language called gobblefunk that made me laugh out loud throughout the book! It’s not surprising that Sophie also loved the way he spoke.

Soon, BFG and Sophie become friends and he takes her to Dream Country where they catch and bottle dreams and nightmares. Sophie also has another adventure with some of the dangerous giants in Giant Country. While she was hiding in a snozzcumber (a cucumber-like vegetable that BFG loved to eat), she gets accidently eaten by an evil giant named Bloodbottler. This was followed by a hilarious description of how BFG saves her from the eyes of the evil giant.

Towards the end of the book, Sophie starts a fight among the evil giants and plots a plan to imprison them with the help of the queen. She goes to Buckingham Palace where she and the BFG meet the queen and inform her about the evil man-eating giants. They eventually capture the giants and imprison them in a deep pit in London.

The book also has impressive illustrations created by Quentin Blake. These pictures add to the charm of the story and make the book a Roald Dahl masterpiece enjoyed by generations of young readers.

2. Ramayana

I love reading books. I have read many books, and am never bored when I am in the company of books.

One book that has influenced me immensely and has become my favourite is the epic Ramayana in English, written by Valmiki (Author), Arshia Sattar (Translator). The style is simple and the book is very interesting. Once I take up this book I can’t put it down.

The book presents Lord Rama as the embodiment of virtues. We also learn about the sufferings he underwent to uphold his principles. Devi Sita is a devoted wife, ready to undergo any hardship or suffering for her husband.

Bharata is a glorious example of a good brother. He is an embodiment of respect and sacrifice. His love for Rama has no parallel.

There are many other characters in the book and each one plays an important role in the development of the story. Jatayu is one such key character. Hanuman is another. Both were loyal and devoted to Lord Rama.

The Ramayana upholds basic human values such as devotion, loyalty and service, and condemns lowly qualities like avarice, selfishness, and greed for power. This is a book that can be read for a truly spiritual experience.

I have read and re-read it many times. It refreshes my mind and inspires my soul each time.

I love reading and one of my favourite books is ‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ by Sudha Murthy. The book tells the story of twelve-year old Nooni who goes to spend a summer vacation with her grandparents in a village. Nooni is a curious child and she has an urge to abstract information at all times. This sets the scene for a thrilling mystery at the beginning of the book.

Since Nooni stays in Bangalore with her parents, the shift to the village life is enchanting. She finds joy in playing with her cousins, savouring the food cooked by her grandmother, and living the carefree lifestyle led by the villagers. I particularly enjoyed the narration that makes you feel like you are listening to a story told by your grandmother.

Soon Nooni finds a mysterious ancient stepwell in the midst of a forest. She tries to find the secret behind the stepwell with her friends.

‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ appeals to children and adults alike, as it weaves a story around the uncomplicated life in a rural village. The book also makes a point on issues of social relevance, such as the importance of toilets in villages, the need to give back to the community, and the respect one should have for heritage sites.

I also liked the illustrations in the book; these were in perfect harmony with the characters sketched out by the author. In a nutshell, this is a heartwarming tale of how Nooni experiences the real value of the simple things in life. This is what makes it a memorable read for me.

A good work of literature is the outcome of years of dedication from the author. I generally like books which have stood the test of time and to which succeeding generations provide their seal of approval. I have read a number of books and there are several which are my favourite. This includes the tragedies of Shakespeare, the novels of Charles Dickens and the plays of George Bernard Shaw.

But there is one book that I particularly enjoy reading and that is the great drama, ‘Macbeth’, by Shakespeare.

Macbeth is the story of an ambitious man and an equally ambitious woman, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively. They commit the murder of King Duncan in their own castle, so that Macbeth could become the King.

Macbeth takes over as the King of Scotland and his wife, Lady Macbeth, becomes the queen. After the first murder, Macbeth plans the murder of his chieftain Banquo, Lady Macduff, and her son, because they are closely related to his enemy Macduff.

The characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are very beautifully sketched by Shakespeare. The chief attraction lies in the character of Lady Macbeth.

The instincts that are usually associated with femininity, i.e., motherhood and compassion, are strikingly absent in Lady Macbeth. Instead, she appears to be an ambitious and ruthless person with an insatiable desire for power.

Macbeth teaches us the great moral lesson that the wage of sin is death. Those who take to wrong and immoral courses, like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, will surely find grief in the course of life. Virtue will surely be rewarded.

3. My Experiments with Truth

We know that food is important for a healthy body. Similarly books are important for a healthy mind. Books are our true friends. They help us understand the world around us. Through books we are able to study the thoughts of different people.

Though I have read many books written by acclaimed authors, “My Experiments with Truth” is my favourite book. It was written by Mahatma Gandhi , the Father of the Nation. I like the book because of several reasons.

It tells us about the life of the great man who got us freedom from the British. It has been written in a simple and easy-to-understand style. It is very interesting and keeps the reader gripped from beginning to end.

My Experiments with Truth is full of intriguing incidents and moral lessons. Gandhi narrates the stories of King Harish Chandra and Shravan Kumar, that have influenced him greatly. It is eye opening to read how this great man fought against untouchability and racial discrimination. My Experiments with Truth is a great book indeed!

The novel is said to be partly autobiographical. Bhagat’s own love story inspired him to write this book. The book was loved by the masses so much that it was even adapted into a movie.

The Interesting Story of 2 States

The story is about a young Punjabi boy, Krish, and a beautiful South Indian girl, Ananya. The two studies at IIM Ahmedabad. They become good friends and spend a lot of time together. Soon fall in love with each other. They want to get married but cannot foresee the difficulties ahead. The problem begins when they introduce their parents to each other.

The two families are from different cultural backgrounds and find it hard to get along. Krish and Ananya try hard to pacify the situation and establish a bond between the two. However, things go out of hand, and they decide to part ways. They begin to concentrate on their respective careers, but it is hard. It is difficult for them to forget each other. Finally, things take a turn for the good, and they reunite.

I love the deep bond between Krish and Ananya. Chetan Bhagat has brought these characters to life. They seem just meant for each other. Other characters in the story are also quite strong and opinionated. It is interesting to read about each one of them.

I love this book. I have read it thrice and can read it over and over again. The characters of this story seem so real that I start living with them every time I read this book. I have also seen the movie based on this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.

‘my favourite book – a suitable boy.

One of my all-time favourite books is Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy. The story is lengthy but doesn’t get boring at any point. It is one of the longest Indian novels ever published in the English language in a single volume. It contains as many as 1349 pages. I love the theme as well as the characters of this story. It took me almost two months to finish reading this novel.

The Interesting Storyline

The story is set in India, which recently attained independence from British Rule. It narrates the story of four families. The story set in the fictional town of Brahmpur focuses on the character of Mrs. Rupa Mehra, who is eagerly looking for a match for her younger daughter, Lata. As I began reading the book, it reminded me of Pride and also Prejudice.

However, I like A Suitable Boy more as it is set in India and is more relatable. Vikram Seth, born in Calcutta in 1952, is an Indian author and poet. He belongs to a well-educated and respectable Indian family. His mother, Leila Seth, became the first Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Seth has written several exciting novels and poems.

His writings have been immensely appreciated. He has won some prestigious awards for his work. These include the Padma Shri, WH Smith Literary Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Crossword Book Award, and also the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman.

I read a lot. It is my favourite hobby. I keep reading books from different authors, but my favourite ones are those written by the famous Indian author Ruskin Bond. Since my childhood, I have been reading his books and have always loved them. One of my favourite books is The Room on the Roof.

The Storyline

The Room on the Roof is the story of an orphaned Anglo-Indian boy, Rusty. He lives with Mr. Harrison. Therefore they reside in a European colony in Dehradun. Mr. Harrison wants Rusty to turn out into a sophisticated Englishman. However he tries to keep him away from the Indians living in their vicinity.

Rusty, on the other hand, loves playing with his Indian friends. He enjoys their company thoroughly. Unable to bear Mr. Harrison’s dominating attitude and rules, Rusty runs away to live with his friends. He starts living with his friends and becomes dependent on them for his routine needs.

Rusty explores so much about India and the Indian culture as he begins to live away from Mr. Harrison. He loves this newfound freedom. But soon realizes that he cannot go on this way for long. He understands that he needs to work to survive.

Soon, he begins to give English lessons to Kishen Kapoor, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kapoor. They provide him with accommodation and food in return for his service. He starts living in a room on their roof. Eventually, he finds out that Mr. Kapoor is a drunkard. His wife, Meena, is 20 years younger than him. Rusty feels infatuated with Meena, and she reciprocates the feelings. The two grow quite close. For the first time in his life, Rusty feels elated.

However, his happiness is short-lived as Meena dies in a car accident. Rusty is devastated at the news, and so is Kishen. After this incident, Kishen goes to live with his aunt, and Rusty is left alone. To overcome the grief and start life afresh, Rusty decides to get settled in England. Before leaving for England, Rusty meets Kishen. He learns that Rusty has become a thief while Mr. Kapoor has remarried. He takes it as his responsibility to help Kishen come out of the dark world of crime. However he advises Kishen to lead a respectable life.

I love the Protagonist of the Book

I loved the character of Rusty. His journey took me through a roller coaster of emotions. I felt bad about his condition as a kid. The way Mr. Harrison treats him is heart-wrenching. I loved it when he ran away from Mr. Harrison’s house and experienced freedom. I also liked the equation between Meena and Rusty. However, the demise of Meena and the condition of Rusty towards the end saddened me yet again.

Ruskin Bond – The Famous Writer

Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He resides in Mussoorie, India. Has written numerous books. He is known for writing some of the best children’s books. However has received a lot of appreciation for his work. He has been awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for his contribution to literature.

The story of Rusty has touched my heart. I have read this book many times. I love the various phases in Rusty’s life and also how he deals with the various challenges he faces.

The story moves to and fro, depicting the events occurring in the life of the twins when they were seven years old and as they turned 31. The story is about a dysfunctional family. The relationship between the characters is quite complicated. It is something that passed from generation to generation. Pappachi, the grandfather of Rahel and also Estha, could not do well professionally, and he takes out all his anger and frustration on his wife. He beats her throughout his life. The life of their kids, Ammu and Chako, also screwed up.

Chacko’s wife Margaret betrays him. She falls for another man and leaves Chacko for him. However, soon after, her lover dies. Chacko and Margaret have a daughter named Sophie, who dies a tragic death. Ammu marries a man named Baba, an incompetent and abusive person. Their marriage also falls apart soon. The two have twins, Rahel and Estha.

The main part of the story begins when Sophie, Rahel, and Estha meet. The twins are seven years old at that time. The plot gets interesting with several twists and turns. Ammu’s affair with a low caste man, Velutha, Sophie’s tragic death, Chacko’s hatred for Ammu, and also all that follows keep the readers hooked. It is sad to read how Estha and Rahel have to part ways. The twins who were so close to each other raised in different places and never get to see others for years. At last, they meet and realize how much they love and need each other.

The communist tension, the stress within the family, social issues, and the complicated relationships all written precisely and in a way that the interest is kept alive until the end.

I love the portrayal of the characters. They are all different from each other and have an interesting stories of their own. I especially love the twins. My heart goes out to them. They had a traumatic childhood because of their abusive father and frustrated mother. Their lives didn’t turn out to be great even as they grew up. Therefore only solace they found was in each other’s company which they realized as they reunited after years.

The novel touched my heart. It made me wonder how the rules made by society almost ruin people’s life. I experienced several feelings such as anger, disgust, joy, and love as I went through this book.

To him, God was truth and truth was God. He never tried to conceal anything about his life. He believed that politics should be tempered with morality. I like this book because it has proved a turning point in my life. I have learnt a lot from this great book. It remains one of the most precious treasures of mankind. It makes a very good reading. Every sentence of this book has a touch of sincerity. It is written in a simple but effective style. It is worth reading.

It contains the life story of Rama who is thought to be an incarnation of God. Hence it is a religious book which helps us to make us good an pious.

The book is full of ideals. It presents every situation of life. from the examples given in this book, we learn how we should behave with our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, enemies, teachers, learned persons, strangers, husbands, wives , sons and even the low caste people. It teaches us to be brave and sons and even the low caste people. It teaches us to be brave and cheerful in all circumstances. Thus, we may call it the best book for character- building in the world.

Rama was the son of King Dashrath of Ayodhya. He was a wonderful man. To obey the orders of his father, he went into exile for 14 years. His wife Sita, and brother Lakshman went with him. Ravana the King of Lanka stole away Sita. Lord Rama invaded Lanka and defeated Ravana. He got his wife back. Rama protected Rishis and killed demons. Sita as an ideal wife, was the follower of Rama in all his joys and sorrows. Rama’s father Dashrath, died of grief without Rama but kept his word. Rama obeyed his father’s wish and brother, Lakshman went with him to serve him with heart and soul. Bharat too did not accept crown but ruled over Ayodhya as Rama’s Steward.

Ram loved the people and the people respected him. He treated the low caste boatman as his own brother. In the forest of Chitra Koot, he treated the Bhils as his own men. He became a true protector of all sages in trouble. His friendship with Sugriva is an example for us. Hanuman proved his true follower. Site lived the life of purity and devotion in Lanka.

Thus we see that victory comes to the good people. The wicked people suffer in the end. Ramayana gives us Consolation when we are in trouble.

Books are the best food for our mind. They give us a peculiar joy and we forget all the cares and worries of life. the serious books are intended for sober and thoughtful minds. They mold our thought and give us a proper direction. They are the best guides and philosophers. I an myself greatly influenced by Bhagwad Gita, the greatest book which India has produced so far. It has no rival. It teaches us the secrets of ideal life and duty.

Bhagawad Gita tells us that we should do our duty at all times whatever the duty is at the moment and forget everything else. When we do our duty, we should not look for any kind of reward. When our duty is done properly, it is its own reward. We should not do anything for our profits and we should not be afraid of losses. Whatever we do, it should be done out of a high sense of duty.

In order to do our duties properly, Bhagawad Gita tells us, we should rise above the pains of opposites. Neither could nor heat should disturbed us. We should not care for gains and losses, pleasures and pains. We should keep our minds steady like a flame in a hurricane lamp which is not disturbed by the wind outside.

Bhagawad Gita embodies a message for Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battle of Mahabharata, Arjuna was unwilling to fight because he would not like to kill his kith and kin. But Lord Krishna told him that was his duty at the moment because they were responsible for much evil in the world. Besides, the people whom he was to kill were already killed by God. He was only to lift his sword and they would fall. He was not the killer. True killer was God. The time for the death of Kurus had come. He was only an agent of the will go God.

Bhagawad Gita does not tell us to renounce the world for Godly pursuits but instructs to be more active in the worldly affairs but not be involved himself in the love of this world. The life here is all temporary and as such being attached to the world is the biggest blunder. We have to live this life temporarily and prepare for a larger life beyond this world. Love of the people is the actual love of God is what Bhagawad Gita teaches.

I like to read and re-read them. Many of them I remember very well. I like to tell them to my friends and my younger sister.

It makes me successful in every walk of life. I am lucky to have it. In short, it is a source of knowledge, wisdom and light.

Visit a shop and you will find thousands of books lying in shelves. You may choose a book that suits you. It may be a book on literature, history or any other subject. It may be a book having a novel, a drama or a number of poems in it. It may be a picture book. Whichever interests you, you may go in for it.

People call me a book-worm. But they are in the wrong. I like books but I am not a book-worm. I read books, which give me a great interest. I like tales of heroism. Therefore, I like the Ramayana. The Ramayana written in English by Rajagopalacharya, the late Governor General of India is a very good book. But I like Hindi Ramayana, which is called ‘Ram Charit Manas’, written by Goswami Tulsi Dass, the great Indian Saint poet. The verses in Hindi are really interesting. I have read the English version of it as told earlier. Therefore, I know the story of the Ramayana.

Because I am fond of singing songs, therefore I sing verses of ‘Ram Charit Manas’. I like the story of the Lord Rama, as he was an ideal son of his ideal father. He was an ideal ruler of an ideal country. He was an ideal husband of an ideal wife. He was an ideal brother of Lakshmana, another ideal brother. Again he was an ideal ruler, who saved the people. Everyone could approach him at the time of distress.

Lord Rama’s tale of heroism has actually moved my heart. I wish that the people of the country should follow his foot-steps. He was great in many respects. We can be proud to know that our country had such a great ruler. Perhaps, for this reason the people used to worship Lord Rama as they do even today.

Lord Rama fought against the forces of evil and injustice. He used to serve and help the saints and people of his time. It is great quality of any ruler. He was a hero. He knew what he had to do. He followed his own principles of life. He was humble. His life teaches us a lot.

If we want to build the character of a nation, we shall have to follow the principles of life of such a great man.

I like the Ramayana because of the finest pictures that it has got. These pictures are highly alluring and astonishing. One of those pictures depicts fighting scene of Lord Rama against Ravana, the king of Lanka. It is a wonderful and lively picture of wonderful fight. I like books of songs and dramas also and I like singing. It keeps me happy at those moments when sorrow haunts my mind. I sing sweet songs. Besides Ramayana or Ram Charit Manas, there are many other books of historical importance. These books throw light on many events. These books tell us of our ancient culture. I like books on culture. The Ramayana satisfies me in every way. It is one of the finest books on Indian culture and history. It is a book in verse. I can sing songs whenever I am lonely. It serves both the purposes. Therefore, I like this book very much.

It is always better to read one book with interest than to read out many books without interest. Therefore, I shall tell you all how to choose your favourite book very carefully. This book should keep you absorbed and at the time it should give you much benefit in times of leisure. Choosing a favourite book is really a difficult job. But I have already chosen my favourite book about which I have already made a mention.

A U.S. Supreme Court decision was leaked Wednesday after Idaho v. United States was accidentally uploaded to the court's website amid the release of other cases.

Though it was quickly removed, the document appeared to detail the decision on the Idaho case regarding women facing emergency care due to pregnancy complications.

In the dissent, Justice Samuel Alito compared an abortion to having an experimental cancer treatment that hasn't been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration.

Speaking to MSNBC Wednesday afternoon, Supreme Court reporter Dahlia Lithwick noted that the court claims to publish decisions as they're ready — but Wednesday's slip makes it appear that they are actually releasing whenever they see fit. She speculated that the Court may be more political than previously known.

"Predictable, but depressing and certainly not helpful to the court," said host Nicolle Wallace.

She went on to read the comments from Alito , reading his comparison between cancer drugs and abortion.

"Dr. Patel," Wallace asked, speaking to guest Dr. Kavita Patel, the former Obama White House policy director, "there is still this delusion that women are out there demanding abortions like they demand, you know, Spanx or undergarments, or it is a view obviously seemingly shared in the household. It is wrapped in the disinformation that has been peddled by the extreme wing of the pro-life movement for decades.

"It is incredibly out of step with American public opinion and it is incredibly out of step with anything that happens in a doctor's office. Between a patient and a doctor."

Patel agreed, but said it may help to explain what women are facing in emergency rooms. She said that they come in for a variety of reasons — either high blood pressure or bleeding.

It happened 54 times at St. Luke's in Boise, Idaho, where the case first began.

In one case, a patient's water broke before the fetus could live outside the womb, but the fetus still had a heartbeat. "You could have infection quickly spread. We've talked about sepsis, which is life-threatening. Without a ban in place, what would happen is the doctor would recommend termination of the pregnancy to avoid sepsis and death or potential death of the mother."

In Idaho, that was blocked.

"Keep in mind the nearest place is Portland or Seattle," the doctor explained. "And that is about eight hours away."

The comments by Alito, she said, "just makes my blood boil because we're not talking about on-demand health care. Making that analogy to cancer is disrespectful to cancer patients. And what we're really talking about is access to care. And that's why I think you saw the outrage in Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's statement ."

Pastor Luis Cabrera and his conservative group threatened to shut down school board meetings if a superintendent of a school district in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas did not heed their demands to ban a wide array of books, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.

In the end, Superintendent Carol Perez agreed to the demands to remove 676 books, including a number of books that address the Holocaust and antisemitism.

"In Mission, the long list of books on the chopping block includes a recent illustrated adaptation of Anne Frank’s diary; both volumes of Art Spiegelman’s Holocaust graphic memoir 'Maus'; 'The Fixer,' Bernard Malamud’s novel about a historical instance of antisemitic blood libel; and 'Kasher in the Rye,' a ribald memoir by Jewish comedian Moshe Kasher," the report said.

The list of 676 books is the same one used by the far-right group " Moms for Liberty, " which “rates” books on its own scale and is known for seeking to remove books that include Jewish themes.

Pastor Cabrera purports to be an advocate of Israel.

Most of the books the pastor's group, Citizens Defending Freedom, were deemed objectionable for how they deal with race, sexuality and gender .

Pastor Cabrera was contacted by activist Martha Garza-Johnson in May with the list of books she called “very sexually explicit” and “filthy and evil." He immediately pressed that the books be removed.

“We are here to work with you,” Garza-Johnson wrote. “We are advocating for our children because we want to protect them from these extremely vulgar and offensive books that have no business in our schools.”

The report explained that school districts often require a formal challenge for each book. That didn't happen in this case.

"Five minutes after receiving the demands, [Superintendent] Perez agreed to them," said the report.

“We will certainly check to see if we have those books to remove them,” she wrote. “Thank you!”

Her deputy then followed up with another message saying she would “begin working with Library Services to track the books on the system and have them removed from the libraries.”

Perez was ultimately placed on administrative leave just 10 days later . The report said that the removal of the books didn't appear to have anything to do with her removal, however. Local reports say there was a conflict over the terms of her contract.

'Nightmare for women': Trump ignores own legal woes with latest attack on Biden

Donald Trump previewed one of his likely attacks on President Joe Biden with a vicious smear against immigrants.

The former president has made his opposition to immigration the cornerstone of his political rise, and has highlighted several unrelated homicides allegedly carried out by undocumented migrants to blame Biden for the slayings — which he's expected to do in Thursday's presidential debate.

"Biden’s policies are a NIGHTMARE FOR WOMEN when it comes to the Border and Immigration!" Trump posted hours before the debate is scheduled to begin.

The former president, who has been found liable for sexual abuse and boasted in a recorded conversation that he gets away with molesting women, launched his first presidential campaign by slandering Mexican immigrants as rapists.

"The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems," Trump said in his first campaign speech nine years ago. "Thank you. It's true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."

Trump was penalized earlier this year by $88.3 million after a jury found him liable for sexually abusing author E. Jean Carroll and then defaming her, and a judge in another case found him liable for fraud and penalized him $355 million for habitually lying about his wealth on financial statements he used to secure loans and make deals.

“The finding that Ms. Carroll failed to prove that she was ‘raped’ within the meaning of the New York Penal Law does not mean that she failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape,’" wrote judge Lewis Kaplan after the jury's verdict. "Indeed, as the evidence at trial recounted below makes clear, the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.”

The presumptive Republican nominee was found guilty last month on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to hide hush money payments to an adult film actress to prevent voters from learning of their affair, in an apparent violation of campaign finance laws.

Trump's comments to former "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush about grabbing women by the genitals were used as evidence in both the Carroll trial and his criminal trial.

He has also been indicted on felony charges in two federal cases involving his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and his mishandling of classified documents, and he also faces felony charges in a Georgia racketeering case related to his post-election activity.

'Make a motion, big man:' Dem taunts spluttering Republican over failed Biden impeachment

A shouting match erupted in the House Judiciary committee Thursday when a Democratic lawmaker dared Republicans to keep their promise to the American people and impeach President Joe Biden.

A furious Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) challenged conservatives to either move forward with impeachment or give up the "Anna Paulina lunacy" that would see Republicans try to put Attorney General Merrick Garland under arrest.

"You've got nothing, nada, zero, zilch," Swalwell told Republicans. "You're just screwing around now."

Even Rep. James Comer (R-KY) admitted Thursday he was skeptical of, and confused by, a plan from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) to have Garland arrested for not turning over a recording of Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur.

"I will vote for it, but I don't think it's necessary," Comer said . "I don't think anyone understands how it's going to work."

Swalwell appeared equally skeptical of conservative's efforts to tarnish Biden's reputation when he egged them on during the committee meeting, promising to yield his time to anyone who could tell him when the impeachment would land.

"You promised the American people you were going to impeach President Biden," he said. "So bring it. I'll yield. Bring it."

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) took the bait and the two men immediately began shouting at each other.

"Do you have a vote Mr. Bishop?"

"Yeah," Bishop shot back.

"Make the motion," Swalwell barked repeatedly as Bishop sputtered and finally snapped, "Do you want me to answer you?"

"You're a big man," Swalwell replied. "You talk about impeaching the president, bring the motion."

"As soon as they stop stonewalling the investigation—" Bishop began to say, but Swalwell lost patience.

"You got nothing," he said. "You guys got nothing because Joe Biden has been acquitted and this is just a pathetic, pathetic postgame of an exercise that yielded nothing. This is embarrassing. This is embarrassing and it's a waste of time. You have people sitting in here who are wearing shirts that say 'Moms Demand Action.' Do you think moms are demanding impeachment? No. They want their kids to be safe in their classrooms from gun violence.

"You actually sit on a committee that can do that," Swalwell said. "Come here and do something."

Five Books for People Who Really Love Books

These five titles focus on the many connections we can form with what we read.

My dad likes to fish, and he likes to read books about fishing. My mom is a birder; she reads about birds. There are plenty of books on both subjects, I’ve found, when browsing in a gift-giving mood. These presents don’t just prove I’m familiar with their interests. They’re a way to acknowledge that we read about our pastimes to affirm our identity: Fly-fishers are contemplative sorts who reflect on reflections; birders must cultivate stillness and attention. What we choose to read can be a way of saying: I am this kind of soul.

For my part, I like reading more than I like almost anything else. And so, in the manner of my parents, I like to read books about books . Writers who write about writing, readers who write about reading—these are people I instantly recognize as my kind. We’re people who are always in the middle of a chapter, who start conversations by asking, “What are you reading right now?” For us, a meta-book is like coffee brewed with more coffee. It’s extra-strength literature.

If you really love books, or you want to love them more, I have five recommendations. None of these are traditional literary criticism; they’re not dry or academic. They take all kinds of forms (essay, novel, memoir) and focus on the many connections we can form with what we read. Those relationships might be passionate, obsessive, even borderline inappropriate—and this is what makes the books so lovable. Finishing them will make you want to pick up an old favorite or add several more titles to your to-read list.

U and I , by Nicholson Baker

I can now say that I’ve been reading Baker for more than 20 years, or more than half my life. But I didn’t know that would happen when I found U and I in a college friend’s car, borrowed it, and never returned it. The subject, not the author, appealed to me then—I loved John Updike. And so did Baker, though love is probably not the right word. This book-length essay is not quite, or not merely, an appreciation of Updike; it’s a hilarious confessional “true story” of Baker’s anxieties, ambitions, competitive jealousy, and feelings of inadequacy in the face of Updike’s abundant body of work. It’s rich too, with wonderful observations on reading and writing in general, as in a passage considering how much more affecting a memoir becomes once the author is deceased: “The living are ‘just’ writing about their own lives; the dead are writing about their irretrievable lives , wow wow wow.”

Dayswork , by Chris Bachelder and Jennifer Habel

I almost prefer to keep certain books on my to-read list forever, where they remain full of magical possibility and cannot disappoint me. Moby-Dick is one of them. What if, God forbid, I chance to read it at the wrong time or in the wrong place and it doesn’t change my life? So I turn to Dayswork instead, which feels like cheating—you get some of the experience of reading Moby-Dick without any of the risk. This very novel novel, written collaboratively by a novelist and a poet who happen to be married, is sort of a sneaky biography of Herman Melville, framed by a meta-narrative about a woman writing a book during lockdown. This narrator delivers a parade of delightful facts and quotes and anecdotes, which she’s been collecting on sticky notes. You could think of it also as a biography of Melville’s most famous novel, which has had its own life after his death and touched so many other lives. Dayswork is fragmentary, digressive, and completely absorbing.

Written Lives , by Javier Marías, translated by Margaret Jull Costa

Marías is one of my favorite novelists, but I only recently encountered this work, a collection of short, dubiously nonfictional biographies in a very specific style. In the prologue, Marías explains that he had edited an anthology of stories by writers so obscure, he was forced to compose their biographical notes using odd, scanty evidence that made it all sound “invented.” It occurred to him that he could do the same thing for authors much more famous (Henry James, Thomas Mann, Djuna Barnes), treating “well-known literary figures as if they were fictional characters, which may well be how all writers, whether famous or obscure, would secretly like to be treated,” he explains. The result is marvelously irreverent, packed with unforgettable details (Rilke, supposedly, loved the letter y and used any excuse to write it) and endearing patterns (Marías would have us believe that many writers loathe Dostoyevsky). Written Lives immediately earned a spot on my shelf of most treasured objects, and every friend I’ve recommended it to has been equally enchanted.

Dear Friend, From My Life I Write to You in Your Life , by Yiyun Li

This sad and incredibly beautiful memoir from a writer best known for her fiction takes its title from a line in a notebook by the New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield. For Li, correspondence, diaries and journals, and literature in general are forms of consolation and companionship that make life worth living even in times of overwhelming despair. The memoir is a record of the reading experiences that saved Li from a dangerous depression. It made me want to dig more deeply into the work of all her favorite writers—Thomas Hardy, Ivan Turgenev, Elizabeth Bowen, William Trevor—because she describes them so warmly and affectionately, as if they were friends. Here, as in her novels, Li is philosophical, with a gift for startling aphorisms: “Harder to endure than fresh pain is pain that has already been endured,” she writes. And “One always knows how best to sabotage one’s own life,” or “What does not make sense is what matters.” Li’s work is so moving and so very wise.

Madness, Rack, and Honey , by Mary Ruefle

The American poet Mary Ruefle is one of those writers people like to call a “national treasure,” which always has to do with something beyond brilliance or talent, an additional spectacular charm that makes you wish you knew them in “real life.” This collection of lectures on poetry and topics adjacent to poetry (sentimentality, theme, the moon) is the perfect introduction to Ruefle’s particular charisma. She’s unabashedly devoted to poets and poems, but you don’t have to love poetry to fall in love with her voice. She’s plainspoken yet mysterious, always asking curious questions, about death and fear and secrets, and then answering herself with surprising authority. Ruefle is inclined toward quirky asides, but all roads lead back to books: “I offer my dinner guest, after dinner, the choice between regular and decaf coffee, when in fact I don’t have any decaf in the house,” she writes. “I am so sincere in my effort to be a good host that I lie; I think this probably happens all the time in poetry.” Ruefle offers a beautiful example of how a life filled with reading opens and alters the mind.

Tokyo These Days

A man with thick-rimmed glasses chases after an umbrella blowing in the wind through a Japanese street, rain coming down as he fails to reach it, in Tokyo These Days.

I’ve never read a cartoonist that makes me feel the space between each panel as strongly as Taiyo Matsumoto. He doesn’t have to fill a page with the buzzing of cicadas or the pulse of a city’s streets for me to hear them in my ear; on a deep instinctual level he knows what two images juxtaposed together will create that ambience, and fill his pages with room tone. He is a master of quiet.

There are also few cartoonists as loud as Matsumoto. His distorted figures and grotesquely expressive close-ups are a gonzo hallmark of his work like Tekkonkinkreet or Ping Pong , which makes the still moments in those stories stand out all the more.

The ground doesn’t sway when I walk. I don’t leave marks where my feet tread. I should have known better,” in Transformers.

Skybound Entertainment’s stealth launch of an interconnected G.I. Joe/Transformers setting was one of the best-kept comic book secrets of 2023. What has become clear as the Energon Universe has rolled out, however, is that Transformers is among 2024’s best comics set in any interconnected brand universe.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers is a war comic where the tanks and planes can punch and kick and vertical suplex each other off of cliffs — and it’s some of the most beautiful action put on the page this year. There’s more of a sense of scale and weight in any given panel of Transformers than there is in the whole of a Michael Bay movie. And when it comes to implied motion in a static image, Johnson is simply one of the best in the business.

With a giant BOOM sound effect in the background, Optimus Prime double food kicks Devastator in the chin, metal spraying from the giant Decepticon’s mouth in Transformers.

But for a book that’s 90% the wildest “giant robots that can turn into cars and planes” action you’ve ever seen, the stakes are as small and personal as the families of precocious teens Spike and Carly. The real miracle of Transformers is how Johnson keeps it all pinned to an emotional ground — and when the fights are so good, that’s saying something. — Susana Polo

Galactus zooms implacably through an asteroid field, as Doctor Doom monologues. “Two days ago, I watched a spiral galaxy eat a broken nebula... and it was so insignificant... just background noise,” in DOOM.

There is a tendency to overrepresent the contribution of writers in discussions about comics, especially when they loom as large as Jonathan Hickman. So it’s something that Doom doesn’t even open with his words, but with late rapper MF Doom’s. “Living on borrowed time/The clock ticks faster” begins the stand-alone one-shot, cribbing the opening bars of “Accordion,” a track off the era-defining album Madvillainy . It’s a good tone-setter: The writer, like the reader, is just along for the ride.

The wonderfully kinetic artist/writer Sanford Greene is the MC here, setting the stage for a story about the greatest villain in the Marvel Universe at the end of everything. This wouldn’t be the first story about Doctor Doom as the last man standing between a version of the Marvel Universe and a Galactus gone mad — but it is perhaps the most thrilling. Doom ’s lean, mean script sets the stakes as big as they come, and then gets out of the way to let Sanford Greene absolutely rip, folding the character’s entire history into one cosmic battle. His linework is unrestrained chaos fitting the story’s scope, with Greene and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg rendering the end of the world in magenta and green.

All the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe assemble to stop Galactus in an impressive double page spread, a narration box reads: “And Galactus destroyed them all,” in DOOM.

In a fallow era for American superhero comics, Doom is a goddamn meteor streaking across the sky, with metaphors made flesh wrestling above all of existence. The magic trick Greene and Hickman pull here is a very old one, when you think about it. Here it is, the bare minimum of what a good superhero comic should be, spun into one of the coolest damn books you can read. Straw spun into gold. — JR

In 2017, Emil Ferris’ debut graphic novel, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters , exploded out of nowhere to become one of the most acclaimed books of the 2010s. Presented as the spiral notebooks of Karen Reyes, a precocious grade schooler who loves art and creature features, the comic was dazzling in its voice and density. Through Karen’s monster-obsessed eyes, Ferris gave readers a vivid ballpoint-pen portrait of ’60s Chicago and its sex workers, queer and BIPOC denizens, and related outcasts as Karen attempts to solve a murder and uncovers a family secret.

The first half of a two-volume work, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters spent seven years suspended on a cliffhanger as a dispute between Ferris and publisher Fantagraphics kept the fate of Book Two in limbo until now. Ferris’ struggle to publish this voluminous work has not been in vain — My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two is as awe-inspiring a conclusion as its predecessor was an opening act.

Following the template set by the first volume, Karen’s journals depict a girl dealing with tumultuous change within and without, in parallel with the city around her. Under Karen’s pen, fictitious monsters are a comfort as she comes to grips with a life more perilous than she realized, one haunted by gangsters, crooked cops, and killers that threatens to swallow her and her older brother Diego alive. Answers to the questions posed in the first act elude her in the second — and the ones she does find are overwhelming.

Ferris has done something incredible in these two volumes. She’s crafted a coming-of-age story like no other, a comic that considers the ways we have made monsters out of the innocent so monstrousness can run rampant, and funneled all through the pen of a 10-year-old unaware she’s experienced a lifetime of horror. She draws herself as a little werewolf to cope, but also maybe to inspire. There are good monsters and bad monsters, and it’s on us to decide which we’re going to be. —JR

Newburn is talking while someone off panel points a gun at his head. “Someone steals from the Flying Dragons, I find out who did it. Someone murders a Russian mobster, I find out who did it. Nobody touches me. That’s the rule. I’m a U.N. inspector wandering through a war zone,” in Newburn.

A crime drama lives or dies on its tone, and a detective series lives or dies on its hook — and Newburn , a modern noir crime drama with the structure of a detective series, lives quite well indeed.

Newburn ’s tight two-volume story introduces Easton Newburn, private detective, as he takes on an apprentice partner. The twist is that Newburn doesn’t work for just anybody: He’s the neutral party that all of New York City’s organized crime families depend on to get to the real truth. Writer Chip Zdarsky spins up a cadre of murder mysteries where the answer is never just whodunit but “who’s gonna pay for it without throwing the city into gang war,” while artist Jacob Phillips’ understated colors and linework belie just how talented you have to be to make a book with this many conversations feel tense and dynamically staged.

A seated woman asks Newburn why he isn’t turning her into the cops or the mafia. “I want you to work for me,” he smirks, in Newburn.

Newburn ’s marriage of crime comics and the odd-couple detective duo slides easily into the most compelling questions of both genres: This detective is the best at what he does, but has he left his humanity behind him? And if these righteous people live so close to the unrighteous, how long until they topple over the brink? Or have they already? — SP

Racist and homophobic remarks filmed as part of a Channel 4 investigation during the Reform UK campaign were "inappropriate," chairman of the party Richard Tice has said.

Speaking at a Reform UK event in Boston with party leader Nigel Farage, Mr Tice said: "We put a statement out and it's all self-explanatory in the statement.

"The reality is that we're a fast-growing movement, and when you've got unpaid volunteers, some people behave inappropriately. And they're gone."

In footage recorded by a Channel 4 undercover reporter, a Reform UK campaigner has been filmed saying migrants crossing the Channel should be used as "target practice". He also used a racist slur against Rishi Sunak (see previous post).

Another Reform figure was filmed making homophobic remarks.

Mr Farage has described remarks in the footage as "very wrong".

The clips were recorded in Clacton, where Reform leader Nigel Farage is a candidate.

Responding to the footage, Mr Farage has said the comments were "very wrong".

"There was an activist that said some pretty unpleasant things," he said.

"Very very prejudiced, very wrong.

"He's somebody who turned up to help ... all political parties encourage volunteers."

He added that the campaigner in question would "not be welcome back" and that the two other figures featured in the footage would also no longer be working with the campaign.

In the footage, the undercover reporter captured canvasser Andrew Parker talking about people coming ashore at Deal in Kent.

Mr Parker said: "Army recruitment - get the young recruits there, with guns, on the f****** beach, target practice. F****** just shoot them."

Mr Parker said in a statement, sent to Channel 4 News: "I would like to make it clear that neither Nigel Farage personally or the Reform Party are aware of my personal views on immigration."

He added: "I have never discussed immigration with either Nigel Farage or the Reform Party and that any comments made by me during those recordings are my own personal views on any subject I commented on. At no time before I was sent out to canvass did I discuss my personal views with any representative of the Reform Party UK or Nigel Farage."

Another Reform figure was filmed reacting to a Pride symbol on a passing police car.

He says: "You see that f****** degenerate flag on the front bonnet? What are the old bill doing promoting that crap? They should be out catching nonces not promoting the f******."
