In a Structured Program
Why is which data collected?
As a result of the amendment to the University Statistics Act of March 6, 2016 (HStatG), the University of Bonn is obliged to collect data from its doctoral candidates. These include, for example, the type and duration of the doctorate as well as the doctoral subject. Further information about the HStatG and the data collected by the university can be found here (in German).
In order to further improve the data situation, we will introduce a central administrative system in the future. Until this system is in place, you can support us by filling out our questionnaire and sending it to your doctoral office .

Geoscience PhD Geoscience PhD
University of göttingen • göttingen.
- Course details
- Costs / Funding
- Requirements / Registration
Courses are held in English (75%) and German (25%).
The PhD programme Geoscience is based on three research foci of the faculty. These are:
1. Coupled processes among the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere
This research focus examines geological, mineralogical, crystallographic and biological processes in the formation of minerals and rocks. Interactions at different geological and biological interfaces are investigated. At these interfaces, mass transfer processes take place, beginning in the low-thermal region and extending to the upper temperature limit for life (110-120°C).
2. Dynamics and transport processes of the lithosphere
This priority focuses on the fundamental processes that control the dynamics of the lithosphere and the design of the earth's surface. The extent and nature of volcanic eruptions are determined by the physical properties of melts and their chemical evolution in the magma reservoir. The geochemical composition, isotopic tracers and the physical properties of the magmas are examined analytically and experimentally. They make it possible to reconstruct the origin, depth and activity of magma chambers.
3. Coupled processes in georeservoirs
The development of geological reservoirs in the earth's crust (georeservoirs) for applications beyond hydrocarbon extraction has been intensified worldwide over the past decades. For example, the use of geothermal energy as a renewable, base-load energy source and the storage of gases and energy in geological formations are of growing economic and societal importance.
By participating in a number of externally funded projects, doctoral candidates learn to perform independent scientific work. Through active participation in the scientific affairs of the faculty or the Geoscience Centre, students acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond a curricular programme of study.
The focus of the PhD programme lies on the individual research of the PhD students (160 ECTS are gained by dissertation and defence), which is accompanied by a variety of courses: 20 ECTS are gained by completing courses, one compulsory course on theory and methods is included, and three elective courses are part of the programme (e.g., on reflecting research, scientific communication, scientific teaching, key competencies, etc.). Students are free to decide on the specific courses they will complete during each semester.
Fees are around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains (in Lower Saxony and Bremen) and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens. Fees: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/fee Semester ticket: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/16432.html
The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Currently, expenses for accommodation, food, health insurance and books are about 850 EUR per month. Please note that fees for health insurance may vary according to age.
For further information, please see the following link: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/54664.html .
The confirmation of one potential supervisor from the Faculty of Geoscience and Geography to supervise the doctoral thesis is required upon application. Study Data Science in Germany: 93 Universities with 134 English Degree Programs
All important info for international students in germany (2024/2025).
Data Science is an interdisciplinary field of science that enables scientifically sound methods, processes, algorithms, and systems for extracting knowledge, patterns, and inferences from both structured and unstructured data.
Data Science uses techniques and theories from mathematics, statistics, and information technology, including signal processing, uses probability models of machine learning, statistical learning, programming, data science, pattern recognition, prognostics, uncertainty modeling, and data warehousing.
Individuals working in the field of Data Science are referred to as Data Scientists, although more specific or specializations of other, higher-level job titles are usually common (e.g., statistician, computer scientist).

ConnectED: Tech for All podcast launched by Community Data Clinic
The Community Data Clinic (CDC), a mixed methods data studies and interdisciplinary community research lab led by Associate Professor Anita Say Chan, has released the first episode of its new podcast, ConnectED: Tech for All. Community partners on the podcast include the Housing Authority of Champaign County, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, Project Success of Vermilion County, and Cunningham Township Supervisor’s Office.
Under Chan's direction, a team of students collaborated to generate this new resource. The team included PhD student and program manager Julian Chin, MSLIS student Evan Allgood, iSchool undergraduate students Aisaiah Pellecer, Harshitha Vetrivel, Kaylee Janakos, and Lauren Ravury, and College of Media undergraduate William Schermer.
ConnectED: Tech for All is a podcast that dives into the heart of East Central Illinois communities. In each episode, the podcast spotlights how local community resources and programs have transformed the lives of our neighbors. Whether an educational program, essential community services, or a grassroots initiative, the podcast aims to connect listeners with critical tools and promote conversations about digital equity, literacy, and access.
The first episode, “A Convo about Education with Jessica Black,” follows a conversation about accessible educational opportunities and programs in East Central Illinois. Black, a Mahomet, Illinois, native who formerly served as a case manager for Cunningham Township and Planned Parenthood, is now a fellow for Lead For America under the American Connection Corps. This episode highlights various free and low-cost educational resources for adults that are offered through institutions such as Parkland College and Cunningham Township as well as Black’s experience as a graduate of the Odyssey Project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which offers a free humanities education to residents of East Central Illinois. Through discussing her personal experiences as a student or steward of these programs, Black opens up a broader conversation about inclusivity, accessibility, enjoyment, and community in relation to education in a post-COVID-19 environment.
You can find the episode on Spotify and on the Community Data Clinic website .
