The opportunity section of your plan covers the problem you are solving, what your solution is, and highlights any data you have to prove that people will spend money on what you’re offering. If you have customer validation in any form, this is where you highlight that information.

Market Analysis

Describe what your target market is and key trends that are occurring in this market . Is the market growing? Are buying patterns changing? How is your business positioned to take advantage of these changes? Be sure to spend some time discussing your competition and how your target market solves their problems today and how your solution is superior.

Marketing & Sales Plan 

Most businesses need to figure out how to get the word out and attract customers. Your business plan should include a marketing plan that describes how you’re going to reach your target market and any key marketing initiatives that you’re going to undertake. You should also spend time describing your sales plan, especially if your sales process takes time to close customers.

Milestones / Roadmap

Outline key milestones you hope to achieve and when you plan on achieving them. This section should cover key dates for product development, key partnerships you need to create, and any other important goals you plan on achieving.

Company & Management

Here’s where you describe the nuts and bolts of your business. How is your organization structured? Who is on your team and what are their backgrounds? Are there any important positions that you still need to recruit for?

Financial Plan

As I mentioned, you’ll need to create a profit and loss, cash flow, and balance sheet forecast. Your financial plan should be optimistic, yet realistic. This is a tough balance and your forecast is certain to be wrong, but you need to document your assumptions and plans for the business.

Finally, you can include an appendix for any key additional information you want to share. Product diagrams, additional details on how you deliver your service, or additional research can all be included.

  • What comes next?

Writing a business plan for investors is really about preparing you to pitch your business . It’s quite likely that you’ll never get asked for the actual business plan document. But, the process will prepare you better than anything else to answer any questions investors may have.

This is your elevator pitch. It should include a mission statement, a brief description of the products or services your business offers and a broad summary of your financial growth plans.

Though the executive summary is the first thing your investors will read, it can be easier to write it last. That way, you can highlight information you’ve identified while writing other sections that go into more detail.

Next up is your company description. This should contain basic information like:

Your business’s registered name.

Address of your business location .

Names of key people in the business. Make sure to highlight unique skills or technical expertise among members of your team.

Your company description should also define your business structure — such as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation — and include the percent ownership that each owner has and the extent of each owner’s involvement in the company.

Lastly, write a little about the history of your company and the nature of your business now. This prepares the reader to learn about your goals in the next section.

The third part of a business plan is an objective statement. This section spells out what you’d like to accomplish, both in the near term and over the coming years.

If you’re looking for a business loan or outside investment, you can use this section to explain how the financing will help your business grow and how you plan to achieve those growth targets. The key is to provide a clear explanation of the opportunity your business presents to the lender.

For example, if your business is launching a second product line, you might explain how the loan will help your company launch that new product and how much you think sales will increase over the next three years as a result.

In this section, go into detail about the products or services you offer or plan to offer.

You should include the following:

An explanation of how your product or service works.

The pricing model for your product or service.

The typical customers you serve.

Your supply chain and order fulfillment strategy.

You can also discuss current or pending trademarks and patents associated with your product or service.

Lenders and investors will want to know what sets your product apart from your competition. In your market analysis section , explain who your competitors are. Discuss what they do well, and point out what you can do better. If you’re serving a different or underserved market, explain that.

Here, you can address how you plan to persuade customers to buy your products or services, or how you will develop customer loyalty that will lead to repeat business.

Include details about your sales and distribution strategies, including the costs involved in selling each product .

If you’re a startup, you may not have much information on your business financials yet. However, if you’re an existing business, you’ll want to include income or profit-and-loss statements, a balance sheet that lists your assets and debts, and a cash flow statement that shows how cash comes into and goes out of the company.

Accounting software may be able to generate these reports for you. It may also help you calculate metrics such as:

Net profit margin: the percentage of revenue you keep as net income.

Current ratio: the measurement of your liquidity and ability to repay debts.

Accounts receivable turnover ratio: a measurement of how frequently you collect on receivables per year.

This is a great place to include charts and graphs that make it easy for those reading your plan to understand the financial health of your business.

This is a critical part of your business plan if you’re seeking financing or investors. It outlines how your business will generate enough profit to repay the loan or how you will earn a decent return for investors.

Here, you’ll provide your business’s monthly or quarterly sales, expenses and profit estimates over at least a three-year period — with the future numbers assuming you’ve obtained a new loan.

Accuracy is key, so carefully analyze your past financial statements before giving projections. Your goals may be aggressive, but they should also be realistic.

Step 1: Research your industry

When it comes to writing a business plan, research is key. You need to have a clear understanding of your industry, your target market, and your competition.

Unless you are wealthy enough to fund the company and test the pet product or service yourself, the only way to meet your wants is to satisfy those in the market.

So, how do you ensure that your business plan is investor-ready? Start with a Lean Plan.

The best investor-ready business plan is a Lean Plan

When writing a business plan for investors, focus on developing a strategic lean business plan . 

This type of business plan is shorter and more flexible than a traditional plan . Similar to the executive summary, your Lean Plan will help keep the necessary information about your business concise and easy to review. This makes it perfect for presenting to investors, but removes the limitations of a traditional business plan format. 

Aside from being easy to review, it’s also much easier to update, expand on necessary section and actually use outside of being a presentational document. Think of it as a tool for gleaning valuable insight into your company, its potential for success, and the areas where you may want to fine-tune your business model. Things that any investor will want to know and confirm that you know as well.

What should go into your investor-ready business plan?

Before you send over your executive summary and financials, make sure you’ve already completed your full Lean Plan. It will share some common topics with your executive summary, but it should go into more detail—and it should still be fairly brief. Here’s what you need to include in your Lean Plan:

  • The problem or need that you’re solving for your customers
  • Your product or service—how you’re solving the problem
  • The target market size and demographics
  • Your sales channels
  • A basic marketing plan (the results of your market research)
  • Competitor analysis and your competitive advantage
  • Real financial projections including a full cash flow forecast
  • Key milestones in your business to date and a timeline of expected milestones to come
  • Key team members , business owners, and advisers championing your success

Key elements to focus on with your investor ready business plan 

It’s true that the angel investors or venture capitalists that you pitch to may never read your whole plan, even if it is a Lean Plan. However, anyone interested in handing you thousands or even millions of dollars will want to do due diligence before they invest in your venture. They’ll be especially interested in your strategic roadmap , your business model , and a solid financial plan . You can cover all of these elements with the following sections.

Executive summary

The executive summary you share the first time you reach out to an investor should be short—one to two pages. It doesn’t include any unnecessary details, but it should support and outline the financial forecast you present. In short, this should provide a summary of your business model, your strategy and what research led you to that specific structure.

Make sure your executive summary covers:

  • Who you are—your name, your business name, your contact information
  • What you offer and the problem your business solves
  • Your target market
  • How much startup funding you’re seeking
  • The size or scale of your business
  • Any remaining critical details that investors definitely need to know

A full financial forecast

No matter who you pitch to, investors will want to know if you’ve thought through the financial feasibility of your business. You can explain this using your financial forecasts within your full financial plan. 

Your full financial forecast should include a projected profit and loss statement , a projected cash flow statement , and a projected balance sheet .

The easiest and most accurate way to do this is to build the financials from the bottom up, starting with identifying your share of the market. First, figure out your TAM, SAM, and SOM . That is, your total addressable market (TAM), then what percent of that market you are going to go after, or your segmented addressable market (SAM), and your realistic share of the market (SOM).

Make sure you answer the following questions with your financial forecasts

  • What’s the average lifetime value of your customers?
  • How much is it going to cost you to get them (acquisition costs)?

If you’re seeking investment, you’ll have to prove that you’ve had some initial traction. So, as you build out your forecasts, use your actuals to help model what you expect to see for the next few years. Even if you don’t have robust financial results, you can still develop extensive forecasts and explain how you’ll continue to review and refine them as your business launches and grows.

How to develop your pitch presentation 

When you first reach out to an investor, plan to share solid financials and an impressive executive summary that piques their interest. They will ask you for whatever additional information they’re interested in. When your Lean Plan is finished and your executive summary and financials are ready to send, prepare your pitch deck and presentation. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you start the conversation with potential investors.

Do your homework

You’ve likely conducted plenty of research around your available market, potential competitors and the customers you intend to serve. But, before you pitch your business, you’ll also want to research who you’re pitching to. You want to be sure that you know who you’re speaking to and have a sense of who they’ve funded before and what they really want to get out of your presentation. 

The key here is that by the time an investor says “yes” to the pitch meeting, you’ve already done all your homework, have a thorough plan in place, and you’re prepared for whatever investors want to know. 

Craft a story

Your pitch will include many of the same elements as your Lean Plan, but don’t just read your executive summary to investors when you have them in the room. Use storytelling to your advantage, craft a tale around who your customers are, and how your solution serves them better than anything currently available. 

You can even focus on your company mission, culture or anything else that sets your business apart and helps reinforce the viability. If you can, make this part of your investor research to be sure you know what elements of your business they care more about.

Practice your pitch 

Keep in mind that just like your Lean Plan, your pitch should be brief. Brevity and knowing how to answer specific questions only comes from practicing what you intend to cover and how you’ll use your pitch deck as a resource. 

Practice your pitch on your family and friends so you get comfortable with the delivery. Ask them to ask you questions about things they’re not clear on so you can start to anticipate and prepare for the hardest questions investors will ask. Here’s a guide to pitching to help you get started.

Keep your business pitch lean

When you’re ready to seek funding for your startup, resist the urge to send over a 200-page business plan to a potential investor. Keep in mind that investors get piles of pitches just like yours every day. Make it as easy as possible for them to digest who you are and the opportunity your business presents. Just make sure that when you get that callback, you have a strong financial plan, and a well-thought-out Lean Plan in your back pocket, so you’re not scrambling.

Complete Financial Forecast

Whether you have no sales or are generating revenue in the hundreds of thousands, every investor will scrutinize your financial plan to determine financial feasibility accurately. This section of your plan needs to be fully fleshed out and leave no grey area or room for further questions.

Understanding your customer acquisition costs (CAC) helps you grow healthy and scalable and shows investors that you know exactly what it takes to get a customer on board.

Strong Management

Your business plan should prove that you have a strong management team.

Many investors run their portfolios with a people-first mentality. This means that who you are is just as important as what you offer. Your business plan’s “Management” or “Team” section is great for humanizing your company and highlighting your strengths.

What makes your team especially capable of running and guiding this business toward profitability? What’s your background? Have you won any awards or participated in any incubator programs? Do you have relevant experience (either in running a business or working in the industry)?

Answer these questions to show investors that you’re uniquely qualified to lead.

Thorough Understanding of Your Market

Is there a market for your product or service, how can you reach your market, and what share of the market do you have a stronghold on?

Demonstrating a thorough understanding of your market and target demographic is crucial. Many businesses have failed because they didn’t conduct market research or speak to their customers and clients. Product validation should precede fundraising efforts.

“Market size” is a basic number that every investor looks for. Your competitive analysis , market research, metrics, and customer surveys should all be factored into the equation.

If you’re struggling to understand your market and position, you can start by gathering primary data from the Census and Labor Bureau. Many industries also have formal associations and publish their research online. You can purchase these studies or commission a market research firm to spearhead your research.

Although this is the last part of the business plan that you’ll write, it’s the first section (and maybe the only section) that stakeholders will read. The executive summary of a business plan sets the stage for the rest of the document. It includes your company’s mission or vision statement, value proposition, and long-term goals.

3. Company Description

This brief part of your business plan will detail your business name, years in operation, key offerings, and positioning statement. You might even add core values or a short history of the company. The company description’s role in a business plan is to introduce your business to the reader in a compelling and concise way.

4. The Business Opportunity

The business opportunity should convince investors that your organization meets the needs of the market in a way that no other company can. This section explains the specific problem your business solves within the marketplace and how it solves them. It will include your value proposition as well as some high-level information about your target market.

5. Competitive Analysis

Just about every industry has more than one player in the market. Even if your business owns the majority of the market share in your industry or your business concept is the first of its kind, you still have competition. In the competitive analysis section, you’ll take an objective look at the industry landscape to determine where your business fits. A SWOT analysis is an organized way to format this section.

6. Target Market

Who are the core customers of your business and why? The target market portion of your business plan outlines this in detail. The target market should explain the demographics, psychographics, behavioristics, and geographics of the ideal customer.

7. Marketing Plan

Marketing is expansive, and it’ll be tempting to cover every type of marketing possible, but a brief overview of how you’ll market your unique value proposition to your target audience, followed by a tactical plan will suffice.

Think broadly and narrow down from there: Will you focus on a slow-and-steady play where you make an upfront investment in organic customer acquisition? 8. Financial Summary

Consider including any monetary information that will give potential investors a glimpse into the financial health of your business. Assets, liabilities, expenses, debt, investments, revenue, and more are all useful adds here.

The "team" section of your business plan answers that question by providing an overview of the roles responsible for each goal. This type of plan usually covers the next year or two of growth. It often references current sales, revenue, and successes. It may also include:

  • SWOT analysis

  • Financial goals and plans

  • Capability planning

A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your investment company in order to improve your chances of success. Your business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Investment Companies

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for an investment company are bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Investors, grants, personal investments, and bank loans are the most common funding paths for investment companies.

How to write a business plan for an investment company.

If you want to start an investment company or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below we detail what you should include in each section of your own business plan:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of investment company you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have an investment company that you would like to grow, or are you operating investment companies in multiple markets?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your business plan. For example, give a brief overview of the investment company industry. Discuss the type of investment company you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.  

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of investment company you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of investment companies:

  • Closed-End Funds Investment Company : this type of investment company issues a fixed number of shares through a single IPO to raise capital for its initial investments.
  • Mutual Funds (Open-End Funds) Investment Company: this type of investment company is a diversified portfolio of pooled investor money that can issue an unlimited number of shares.
  • Unit Investment Trusts (UITs) Investment Company: this type of investment company offers a fixed portfolio, generally of stocks and bonds, as redeemable units to investors for a specific period of time.

In addition to explaining the type of investment company you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of investments made, number of client positive reviews, reaching X amount of clients invested for, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the investment industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the investment industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your business plan:

  • How big is the investment industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your investment company? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: companies or employees in specific industries, couples with double income, families with kids, small business owners, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of investment company you operate. Clearly, couples with families and double income would respond to different marketing promotions than corporations, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other investment companies.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes robo investors and advisors, company 401Ks, etc. You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other investment companies with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be investment companies located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of clients do they serve?
  • What type of investment company are they and what certifications do they have?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide better investment strategies?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For an investment company, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to an investment company, will you provide insurance products, website and app accessibility, quarterly or annual investment reviews, and any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your investment company located in a busy retail district, a business district, a standalone office, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your investment company marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Commercials and billboards
  • Reaching out to websites

  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your investment company, including researching the stock market, keeping abreast of all investment industry knowledge, updating clients on any new activity, answering client phone calls and emails, networking to attract potential new clients.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to land your Xth client, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your investment business to a new city.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your investment company’s ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing investment companies. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing an investment company or successfully advised clients who have achieved a successful net worth.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you take on one new client at a time or multiple new clients ? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your investment company, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing an investment company:

  • Cost of investor licensing..
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office location lease or list of clients that you have acquired.

The 5 Things Investors Really Care About When Reviewing Your Business Plan

A business plan is an essential tool for startups and, when executed correctly, it serves two key purposes:

  • It provides goals and a roadmap for you to follow in order to build a successful company.
  • It provides the format and information lenders and investors need to determine whether or not to provide funding to you.

When preparing your business plan for investors , you must keep this audience’s unique needs in mind. Below, you’ll learn what these needs are and what investors will scrutinize most when reviewing your plan.

Investors will generally take equity in your company, or they will give you a loan that must be repaid. In either case, their primary goal is to get a return on their investment. For loans, they want to have great confidence that you’ll be able to repay the loan and interest. For equity investments , they want to see real growth potential and a reasonable possibility of your exiting at a significant multiple.

For those unaware of the phrases “exiting” and “significant multiple,” please allow me to explain.

By “exiting,” I’m referring to an event in which the equity investor will be paid. The most likely exit event is for you to eventually sell your company. Another positive exit event is taking your company public; while this is very favorable to investors, the likelihood of this happening is extremely low.

Next, a “multiple” is the return on the investment that investors will receive. For example, let’s say a venture capitalist invested $5 million in your business and, upon exit, received a $50 million check for their equity stake. In this case, the investor would have received a 10X multiple or return on investment. Equity investors generally want to see a five- to 10-time multiple. While this seems very high, it’s because they understand that many of their investments will not materialize at all.

Below are five of the most critical things investors look for in your business plan to determine if they think you will give them the return on investment they desire:, financial needs and projections.

Investors need to know how much money you are seeking, the proposed uses of the funds and your financial projections .

Your financial projections should show your expected sales, expenses and profits over the next five years. Investors want to see significant growth and profits but need to feel confident about your assumptions.

For example, while it’s easy to assume that your sales will grow 500% per year, investors will want you to provide rationale behind this and other assumptions. Did your last company grow at 500% per year? Are there other companies in the market that are growing at this rate?

The more research you can do to bolster your assumptions, the more credibility they will have in the eyes of investors, which will make them more likely to believe in your business and fund your company.

Investors want to see that you’ve achieved traction. Traction is similar to the term “proof of concept.” It is getting users or, ideally, paying customers for your product or service. By gaining traction, you reduce risk for yourself and for investors.

For instance, consider two companies developing mobile apps . One just has the idea to create the app. The other has already built the app (i.e., they’ve proven they could successfully code and complete the app), they’ve acquired 10,000 users (i.e., they’ve proven they could market the app and that customers really want it) and 1,000 users are currently paying for a premium subscription of the app (i.e., they’ve proven they can monetize their business). As you can see, the latter company has already removed multiple risk factors to the investor and is thus much more likely to receive funding.

In the executive summary at the start of your business plan, you want to clearly describe what you do and explain any traction that you’ve accomplished thus far to get investors interested right away.

Note that if you are a true startup, it may be hard to show traction in terms of paying customers. However, you could show a prototype or research you’ve done proving customer interest in your product. Sometimes you need to get creative in showing traction!

Unique success factors

Documenting your unique success factors is critical to winning over investors, which is why any comprehensive business plan should include a section on this. Your unique success factors are those things that make your company more likely to succeed.

Traction, as just mentioned, is clearly a unique success factor. Other factors are past accomplishments of your management team. They can also be market research you’ve uncovered showing that market trends are moving in a direction that benefits your company over your competition. Another success factor could be a marketing partnership you’ve formed that’s sure to bring in a steady flow of customers.

Think through why your company is uniquely qualified to succeed in your given field, and stress this in your executive summary and throughout your business plan, as it’s imperative investors see and understand this.

Marketing plan.

The marketing section of your business plan discusses the four Ps, which include:

  • P roduct or service
  • P lace, or distribution strategy, which is how customers will buy from you (e.g., via your website, storefront, direct mail, distributors, etc.)
  • P romotions, which is how you will attract new customers

Within the promotions section, you need to explain to investors the cost of attracting a new customer, the expected lifetime value of your customer and whether or not there’s room to scale.

Regarding the cost of attracting customers, hopefully you have real figures to work with. If not, you can apply realistic assumptions. For example, you might assume that via pay-per-click advertising, it will cost you $2 per click, and one out of every 100 clicks will become a client. Thus, your customer acquisition cost (CAS) will be $200.

Next, you might be able to show that your average customer pays $100 for your product and buys 10 times over the first year at a 50% profit margin. This would mean that your average customer gives you a profit of $500.

Finally, you want to show the market is big enough to support your growth. Ideally, you can prove with market research that your target market includes, let’s say, 5 million customers.

In summary, you would be showing it costs you $200 to obtain a customer worth $500, and there are 5 million potential customers out there; this would prove to investors that you have a sizable and profitable opportunity.

The final thing investors really care about in your business plan is research. Research will appear in multiple sections of your plan, and the goal of it is to bolster the argument that your company is worth investing in. As demonstrated above, the right research will support your financial projections, unique success factors and other key sections.

Here is the key research you need to conduct:

  • In your industry analysis section, you must provide research on the size of your market and trends
  • In your customer analysis section, you should document how many target customers exist and their wants and needs
  • Your competitors. Show their strengths and weaknesses, and conduct research to support your financial assumptions

Before investing money in a business venture, you should therefore closely examine how much capital you need to invest in order to realize the project.

The capital requirement of an investment is determined as part of an investment plan. This provides a basis for investment calculations and the profitability forecast. That means it's necessary to list all costs related to an investment in order to assess the business.

What is an investment plan?

An investment plan refers to a table that lists all investment items and corresponding costs linked to a particular investment. Here, it’s important to be aware that the investment plan only encompasses the expenses incurred as one-off costs in connection with the investment and during the start-up phase.

An overview of the ongoing monthly costs (such as staff costs) is drawn up in the operating expense plan, independently from the investment plan.

The investment plan and the operating expense plan subsequently form part of the capital requirements plan.

The investment plan is a list of all nonrecurring costs incurred during the start-up phase of an investment. Together with the operating expense plan – detailing a company’s ongoing costs – the investment plan is integrated in capital requirements planning. In turn, the capital requirements plan is part of the finance plan of the business plan.

In business practice, an investment plan is always created when an investment decision has to be made – usually for one of the following reasons:

  • Initial investment: Initial investment refers to the procurement of all operationally required assets in connection with founding the company.
  • Replacement investment: Replacing an asset of the company with a new asset is called a replacement investment.
  • Rationalization investment: Rationalization investment denotes investments that result in a cost saving.
  • Expansion investment: If the expansion of business operations necessitates the procurement of assets, this is referred to as an expansion investment.

As part of a comprehensive finance plan, the investment plan is not only the basis for the business plan but also a guideline for financing . It thus represents a prerequisite for raising capital. You should present the itemization in a transparent and structured manner so capital providers like banks or private investors get an overview of all expenses associated with the investment. Generally, you’ll only receive an investment loan if your backers are able to see where you’d like to use the borrowed funds.

In an investment plan, you draw up a list of all one-off expenses for all investment items associated with an investment, including the costs incurred during the start-up phase for advance financing . If it concerns an initial investment for incorporating a business, the investment plan will also contain all costs associated with establishing the company .

All the above details are added up in the investment plan. The final amount of the investment plan indicates how much capital you need in the initial phase of the investment to implement the planned project.

Make sure that you have specific offers for the individual cost items. Only then will you ensure that the amount of the necessary investment is determined as thoroughly as possible.

As part of the finance plan , the investment plan is also part of the business plan. It is typically combined with an operating expense plan in the finance plan.

While the investment plan only covers one-off costs and additional expenses during the start-up phase, the operating expense plan provides backers with an overview of the ongoing costs of your company.

Operating expenses include:

  • Staff costs (including wage and incidental wage costs) as well as your own salary as managing director for stock corporations (all costs including incidental wage costs)
  • If relevant, a management wage (to ensure personal living costs for sole proprietorships and partnerships)
  • Rent, tenancy and leasing
  • Heating, electricity, water and gas
  • Market development expenses (advertising and marketing)

Since investment projects are typically funded by a combination of equity capital, subsidized loans and bank credit, it is critical that you take interest and repayments into consideration when planning capital requirements. An internal business plan is a document that specifically focuses on the activities within your company. While external business plans focus on attracting investors, internal business plans keep your team aligned on achieving goals.

This business plan can differentiate based on how specific you want it to be. For example, you can focus on a specific part of the business (e.g. financial department) or on the overall goals of the whole company.

Nonetheless, here are some things that should universally be included in all internal business plans:

  • Mission statement – Focus on the practical, day-to-day activities that your employees can undertake to achieve overall objectives.
  • Objectives – Provide specific goals that you want your company to achieve. Make the objectives clear and explain in which way they can be reached. Focus more on short-term objectives and set reasonable deadlines.

How Do You Write a Business Plan Report?

As we explained in the previous heading, there are a few different types of business plan. Depending on the audience you are referring to, the language you use in the plan should be adjusted accordingly.

Nonetheless, there are certain key elements that should be included in all business plans, the only thing that will vary is how detailed the sections will be.

Include these elements in your business plan.

Executive summary

Company description, market opportunity and analysis, competitive landscape, target audience, describe your product or service, develop a marketing and sales strategy, develop a logistics and operations plan, financial projections, explain your funding request, compile an appendix for official documents.

An executive summary is a quick overview of the document as a whole that allows investors and key stakeholders to quickly understand all the pain points from the report.

It is the best way to layout all the vital information about your business to bank officials and key stakeholders who don’t have the time to go through the whole business plan.

If you summarize the sections well, the potential investors will jump into the sections they are most interested in to acquire more details.

You should write the executive summary last since you will then have a better idea of what should be included.

A good executive summary answers these questions:

  • Who are you?
  • What do you sell?
  • How profitable is it?
  • How much money do you need?

This section of the business plan aims to introduce your company as a whole. The things you include in the company description can vary depending on if you are only starting a business or you already have a developed company.

The elements included in this section are:

  • Structure and ownership – Talk about who the key shareholders in your company are and provide a full list of names. Also, mention details such as where the company is registered and what the legal structure looks like. In most countries, this is a legal requirement for AML regulations.
  • History – This segment is if you already have an existing company. Use this section to show your credibility. Include company milestones, past difficulties, and a precise date for how long your company has been operating.
  • Objectives – Describe the overall objectives of your company and how you plan to reach them.

Market analysis refers to creating your ideal customer persona and explaining why they would be interested in buying your products.

Market opportunities are the gaps that you found in the current industries and creating a way for your product to fill those gaps.

The most important step in this section is to create a target market (persona) through demographic factors such as location, income, gender, education, age, profession, and hobbies.

Make sure that your target market isn’t too broad since it can put off potential investors.

A good idea is to also include a detailed analysis of your competitors – talk about their products, strengths, and weaknesses.

Although you may include a competitive analysis in the market analysis section, this segment should provide a more detailed overview.

Identify other companies that sell similar products to yours and create a list of their advantages and disadvantages. Learning about your competitors may seem overwhelming, but it’s an indispensable part of a good business plan.

Include a comparison landscape as well that defines the things that set you apart from the competitors. Describe the strengths of your product and show which problems it could solve.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the demographic characteristics of the people who will buy my product?
  • What are their desires?
  • What makes my product valuable to them?

When talking about your products and services, be as precise as possible. Mention your target audience and the marketing channels you use for targeting this audience.

This section should reveal the benefits, life cycle, and production process of your products/services. Also, it is a good idea to include some pictures of your products if possible.

When describing your products, you should highlight:

  • Unique features
  • Intellectual property rights
  • What makes the product beneficial

Marketing is the blood flow to your business’s body. Without a good marketing and sales strategy, the chances of your product succeeding are very slim.

It’s always best to already have a marketing plan in place before launching your business. By identifying the best marketing channels, you will show your investors that you researched this topic in detail.

Some of the things you should include are:

  • Reach – Explain why a specific channel will be able to reach your target market
  • Cost – Is the marketing strategy going to be cost-effective? How much money do you plan on spending on the strategy?
  • Competition – Are your competitors already using this channel? If so, what will make your product stand out?
  • Implementation – Who will be taking care of the implementation process? Is it a marketing expert? Which suppliers did you reach out to?

This section should explain the details of how exactly your company is going to operate.

These are the things you should include:

  • Personnel plan – Define how many people you plan to employ and their roles. Also, if you plan on increasing your staff, you should explain what would be the cause of that.
  • Key assets – This refers to assets that will be crucial for your company’s operation.
  • Suppliers – Mention who your suppliers will be and what kind of relationship you have with them. Your investors will be interested in this part of the section since they want to be reassured that you are cooperating with respectable counterparties.

The financial projections section is one of the most important parts of your business plan. It includes a detailed overview of expected sales, revenue, profit, expenses, and all the other important financial metrics .

You should show your investors that your business will be profitable, stable, and that it has huge potential for cash generation.

Monthly numbers for the first year are crucial since this will be the most critical year of your company.

At the very least, you should provide:

  • Funding needs
  • Profit-and-loss statement forecast
  • Balance sheet forecast
  • Cash-flow statement forecast

A business plan is a written document that defines your business goals and the tactics to achieve those goals. A business plan typically explores the competitive landscape of an industry, analyzes a market and different customer segments within it, describes the products and services, lists business strategies for success, and outlines financial planning.  

In your research into business plans, you may come across different formats, and you might be wondering which kind will work best for your purposes. 

Let’s define two main types of business plans—the traditional business plan and the lean start-up business plan. Both types can serve as the basis for developing a thriving business, as well as exploring a competitive market analysis, brand strategy, and content strategy in more depth. 

There are some significant differences to keep in mind [ 1 ]: 

The traditional business plan is a long document that explores each component in depth. You can build a traditional business plan to secure funding from lenders or investors. 

The lean start-up business plan focuses on the key elements of a business’s development and is shorter than the traditional format. If you don’t plan on seeking funding, the lean start-up plan can serve mainly as a document for making business decisions and carrying out tasks. 

Now that you have a clear business plan definition, continue reading to learn how to start writing a detailed plan that will guide your journey as an entrepreneur.  

How to write a business plan 

In the sections below, you’ll build the following components of your business plan:

Financial planning

Explore each section to bring fresh inspiration and reveal new possibilities for developing your business. Depending on which format you're using, you may choose to adapt the sections, skip over some, or go deeper into others. Consider your first draft a foundation for your efforts and one that you can revise, as needed, to account for changes in any business area.

1. Executive summary 

This is a short section that introduces the business plan as a whole to the people who will be reading it, including investors, lenders, or other members of your team. Start with a sentence or two about your business, your goals for developing it, and why it will be successful. If you are seeking funding, summarize the basics of the financial plan. 

2. Business description 

Use this section to provide detailed information about your company and how it will operate in the marketplace.

Mission statement: What drives your desire to start a business? What purpose are you serving? What do you hope to achieve for your business, the team, and customers? 

Revenue streams: From what sources will your business generate revenue? Examples include product sales, service fees, subscriptions, rental fees, license fees, and more. 

Leadership: Describe the leaders in your business, their roles and responsibilities, and your vision for building teams to perform various functions, such as graphic design, product development, or sales.  

Legal structure: Are you operating as a partnership or a corporation? If you’re registering a specific legal structure within your province or territory, include it here and the rationale behind this choice. 

3. Competitor analysis 

This section will include an assessment of potential competitors, their offers, and marketing and sales efforts. For each competitor, explore the following:

Value proposition: What outcome or experience does this brand promise?

Products and services: How does each one solve customer pain points and fulfil desires? What are the price points? 

Marketing: Which channels do competitors use to promote? What kind of content does this brand publish on these channels? What messaging does this brand use to communicate value to customers?  

Sales: What sales process or buyer’s journey does this brand lead customers through?

4. Products and services

Use this section to describe everything your business offers to its target market. For every product and service, list the following: 

The value proposition or promise to customers, in terms of how they will experience it

How the product serves customers, addresses their pain points, satisfies their desires, and improves their lives.

The features or outcomes that make the product better than those of competitors

Your price points and how these compare to competitors

5. Marketing plan and sales strategies 

In this section, you’ll draw from thorough market research to describe your target market and how you will reach it. 

Who are your ideal customers?   

How can you describe this segment according to their demographics (age, ethnicity, income, location, etc.) and psychographics (beliefs, values, aspirations, lifestyle, etc.)? 

What are their daily lives like? 

What problems and challenges do they experience? 

What words, phrases, ideas, and concepts do consumers in your target market use to describe these problems when posting on social media or engaging with your competitors?  

What messaging will present your products as the best on the market? How will you differentiate messaging from competitors? 

On what marketing channels will you position your products and services?

How will you design a customer journey that delivers a positive experience at every touchpoint and leads customers to a purchase decision?

6. Brand strategy 

In this section, you will describe your business’s design, personality, values, voice, and other details that go into delivering a consistent brand experience. 

What are the values that define your brand?

What visual elements give your brand a distinctive look and feel?

How will your marketing messaging reflect a distinctive brand voice, including tone, diction, and sentence-level stylistic choices? 

How will your brand look and sound throughout the customer journey? 

Define your brand positioning statement. What will inspire your audience to choose your brand over others? What experiences and outcomes will your audience associate with your brand? 

7. Financial planning  

In this section, you will explore your business’s financial future. If you are writing a traditional business plan to seek funding, this section is critical for demonstrating to lenders or investors that you have a strategy for turning your business ideas into profit. For a lean start-up business plan, this section can provide a useful exercise for planning how you will invest resources and generate revenue [ 2 ].  

Use any past financials and other sections of this business plan, such as your price points or sales strategies, to begin your financial planning. 

How many individual products or service packages do you plan to sell over a specific time period?

List your business expenses, such as subscribing to software or other services, hiring contractors or employees, purchasing physical supplies or equipment, etc.

What is your break-even point, or the amount you have to sell to cover all expenses?

Create a sales forecast for the next three to five years: (No. of units to sell X price for each unit) – (cost per unit X No. of units) = sales forecast.

Quantify how much capital you have on hand.

When writing a traditional business plan to secure funding, you may choose to append supporting documents, such as licenses, permits, patents, letters of reference, resumes, product blueprints, brand guidelines, the industry awards you’ve received, and media mentions and appearances.

Marketing plan describes how the company will attract and retain customers, including any planned advertising and marketing campaigns . It also describes how the company will distribute its products or services to consumers.

The term “loud budgeting” is getting some attention. The general idea is to create a budget and make the plan “public” to help reinforce your own financial decision making and gain support from your inner circle, so you have a better chance of sticking with it. This concept can be an empowering way to take control of your financial future.

First, identify your financial goals and create a plan that helps you achieve those goals. A good place to get started is to check out the free financial planning tools and resources on Investor.gov . Think about what truly matters to you and what motivates you to save. Your budget should include all your monthly expenses, including necessities, such as living expenses and discretionary expenses, such as entertainment. Some goals may include paying off high-interest debt or student loans, saving for a house, putting money into an emergency fund , and planning for retirement .

Once you create your saving and investing plan, consider being loud‒and I’m going to add proud‒about your plan and goals. Oftentimes, when we say something out loud, it sinks in better and stays with us. Creating a saving and investing plan that helps you meet your financial goals and sharing those ideals and goals with your family and friends may not only help you stay more committed to your decision-making but can provide you with support to help you stick with your plan for the long term. It can also make talking about finances more comfortable. When I say “loud and proud” it’s important to be considerate when sharing your plan. Always remember your audience when discussing your finances and remember at the end of the day this isn’t about preaching to others about money. It’s about reinforcing good money and investing habits for yourself.

Let’s face it. There are a lot of temptations to spend money rather than save and invest for your future. We’re constantly inundated with commercials, ads and emails encouraging us to take a trip of a lifetime, buy the newest car or splurge on high-tech gadgets. Due to social media, we’re also able to get a front row seat into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, which only adds pressure to buy what they’re buying and spend money at every turn.

Although they have the best intentions, our friends and family may reach out to include you in their fun-filled activities that could cost you a pretty penny. By sharing your saving and investing goals with them, they will not only better understand why you may not be able to join them, but they could help support you and keep you on track to achieve your financial goals. Being loud and proud with your investing plan could reduce your impulse spending and help even alleviate anxiety as you will no longer have to make up excuses about why you can’t go on that extravagant trip or buy that $200 concert ticket!

With courage of your convictions and strong support, being loud and proud with your saving and investing plan may be a great option to help keep you on track with your plan for the long term. Plus, you may even inspire those around you to create their own loud and proud investing plan.

Life Magazine Will Come Back to, Well, Life

The investor Josh Kushner and his wife, Karlie Kloss, have struck a deal with Barry Diller’s media company to revive it as a regular print title.

Life, the iconic photography-focused chronicler of the 20th century, has taken on many forms, including a weekly magazine, a website and the occasional special issue.

Now, it is set to resume regular print publication, thanks to a deal between Barry Diller’s IAC and Josh Kushner, the venture capitalist whose Thrive Capital is one of the biggest investors in OpenAI, and his wife, the entrepreneur and model Karlie Kloss.

Kushner and Kloss are buying the publication rights to Life from Dotdash Meredith, the print and digital publisher. The deal is being done through Bedford Media, the media start-up that Kloss leads as C.E.O. (The price wasn’t disclosed.)

Life was once a central part of American culture, featuring the work of renowned photographers like Robert Capa and writing by top authors. (Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” first appeared in its pages.)

But its popularity plunged after the 1970s, with the magazine largely being reduced to light reading and celebrity news. In 2008, it became an online archive with occasional newsstand editions.

The backstory: Kushner approached Diller about resurrecting Life about eight months ago, DealBook hears. His pitch was that the magazine could be resurrected in print and online — as well as in newer iterations like events and collaborations with brands and major studios.

“Life’s legacy lies in its ability to blend culture, current events and everyday life — highlighting the triumphs, challenges and unique perspectives that define us,” Kushner said in a statement.

Dotdash Meredith will remain involved: It owns the rights to Life’s vast photo and content archive, and will continue to publish special single-topic print editions.

It’s the latest high-profile effort to resurrect a legacy publication during a tough time for the media industry. Old-school publishers like Condé Nast and newer ones like Vox and Vice have struggled amid a downturn in advertising.

But Kushner, who will serve as Life’s publisher, and Kloss are betting that they have a more focused approach that will succeed. “We see Life as an uplifting and unifying voice in a chaotic media landscape,” Kloss said.

The two have already purchased other famous titles. When Bedford was formed last year, it bought the style magazine i-D from Vice. And in 2020, Kloss organized an investor consortium to buy the high-end fashion magazine W .

What’s next: Bedford will begin hiring senior editorial staff for Life, which is tentatively set to resume regular publishing early next year.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Disney ends its legal fight with Ron DeSantis over its Florida special tax district. The entertainment giant and the state’s governor agreed to cooperate on new growth plans for the 25,000-acre area that encompasses Walt Disney World. It was a surprising end to a bitter fight that saw DeSantis and his allies take over the district and Disney fight back with quiet efforts to lock in its own development plans.

Amazon invests $2.75 billion more into Anthropic. The funding brings the tech giant’s total stake in Anthropic, a buzzy artificial intelligence start-up, to $4 billion . It’s the latest sign of tech giants’ eagerness to pour money into promising A.I. technology. Meanwhile, Salesforce reportedly paid more than $20 million to license Albert Einstein’s image to promote its A.I. efforts.

Deal making roars back in the first quarter. About $690.2 billion worth of mergers were announced in the first three months, up 30 percent from the same time last year, according to LSEG. But that growth was driven largely by mega transactions like Capital One’s $35 billion bid for Discover Financial Services: The number of announced deals was down 31 percent year on year.

How much time will Bankman-Fried serve?

Sam Bankman-Fried is set to be sentenced today, with prosecutors requesting that the FTX founder spend decades in prison and defense lawyers arguing for just a few years.

The 32-year-old’s fate will hinge on how Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York weighs how much damage he caused to investors and customers, and how many of them will get their money back.

Prosecutors want Bankman-Fried to serve up to 50 years. The onetime poster child of the crypto industry was found guilty in November of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy after being charged with stealing billions of dollars to fund a lavish lifestyle and his own investments.

In a court filing this month, prosecutors called the fraud “historic,” pointing to the magnitude of losses and the tens of thousands of potential victims, including unsophisticated retail investors.

Bankman-Fried’s lawyers are calling for leniency. They have asked for a sentence of no more than six and a half years and accused the government of pursuing a “medieval” punishment of an “exceptionally brilliant” young man with much to offer society.

They have also pointed to claims by FTX’s lawyers that customers would eventually be repaid. The net harm to customers, lenders and investors, they said, is “zero.”

FTX’s current leader blasted those claims. John Ray told Judge Kaplan this month that recovering the money wasn’t guaranteed and would take work by his team. It was “categorically, callously, and demonstrably false” to say that no harm was caused, he added.

Victim restitution won’t guarantee a lighter sentence . “It’s a crime to defraud people,” Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor, told DealBook. “And the sheer scale of the fraud here was large.” He expects a sentence of 20 to 30 years.

Mark Kornfeld of the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney agreed that Bankman-Fried’s role in victims regaining their money may not matter much. “He’s not the one making them whole,” he told The Financial Times .

A cheat sheet for tomorrow’s inflation report

As the S&P 500 heads into the last trading day of the quarter, the index is closing in on a fifth straight monthly gain. Driving that are hopes that the Fed will start cutting interest rates as early as June.

But new inflation data could still derail that momentum. The Commerce Department is scheduled to release the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, which is closely watched in Washington, tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

Economists expect another hot number . The question is, how hot ? Especially strong data could prod the Fed to delay lowering borrowing costs, and affect the number of cuts this year.

Here’s what to watch for:

Headline P.C.E. for February is expected to show a 2.5 percent year-on-year gain, a slight increase from the January report.

Core P.C.E., which excludes volatile food and fuel prices, is forecast to come in at 2.8 percent on an annualized basis, roughly in line with the previous month.

Analysts will watch for signs that services inflation — spending on things like airfare, health care and rent — has begun to ease. Consumer spending in these areas has remained high in recent months.

Fed hawks are weighing in ahead of the report. Christopher Waller , a Fed governor, said in a speech yesterday that the central bank should hold off on cutting rates until he sees “at least a couple months of better inflation data.” (The title of his talk: “There’s Still No Rush.”)

Investors sold off Treasury notes after Waller’s comments. But the futures market this morning is still penciling in three rate cuts this year, more or less in line with the Fed’s most recent forecast .

— Ray Dalio , the founder of Bridgewater Associates. In a lengthy post on LinkedIn, the hedge fund billionaire agreed with President Xi Jinping of China about an imminent century of extraordinary change and offered suggestions to help Beijing deal with its economic problems.

The A.I. lobby wants to talk about China

As policymakers try to figure out how to regulate the fast-growing artificial intelligence industry, Silicon Valley has ramped up its lobbying efforts to shape the debate.

Its latest tactic? Tapping into growing worries about China.

The Biden administration is doubling down on China’s tech threat. That’s evident by recent moves, such as signaling its support for legislation that could see TikTok banned in the U.S.

China is producing more top researchers , though the U.S. has a big lead on investments and breakthroughs.

Silicon Valley is trying to capitalize on the mood. On May 1, tech leaders — including Palantir’s Alex Karp, Sequoia Capital’s Roelof Botha and Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures — are expected to attend a conference in Washington with dozens of lawmakers, like Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican of Louisiana.

Jacob Helberg, an adviser to Palantir and a member of a congressional commission on China’s threats to national security, is organizing the event.

For tech companies, Washington’s focus on China could be good for business. “The other side of slowing down China is minimal friction and regulation for U.S. companies,” Amba Kak, a former senior adviser on A.I. to the F.T.C., told The Times.

The event comes as the industry is ramping up its lobbying efforts. More than 350 organizations reported lobbying the federal government on A.I. issues during the first nine months of 2023, spending a total of $569 million on the effort, according to OpenSecrets .

But a Facebook co-founder is reportedly making a different case. Dustin Moskovitz , a major Democratic donor, met with President Biden last month to share his own arguments about A.I. safety, according to Puck.

Moskovitz and others have warned that “mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority.” His nonprofit group, Open Philanthropy, has advocated regulations like software export controls and licensing requirements for certain A.I. models.
