How to Choose Your PC Parts: Graphics Cards/GPU
Computer Peripherals
Shop High Performance Computer Parts
Computer components like the CPU, GPU, and motherboard each play pivotal roles in creating a competent PC. The quality of ones PC parts directly impacts the capabilities of a computer, whether one decides to use it primarily for gaming or as a workstation.
And with so many different computer components on the market today, selecting parts for your build can sometimes feel like a daunting task. When shopping for PC parts one needs to consider costs, compatibility between parts, resale value, and more. Lets go over some of the more major components, and what attributes you should look for when shopping.
Get the Most Out of Your PC with a Powerful Processor
The computers Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the first component that one should focus on when building a computer, as it determines most components that a computer can use. Most desktop computers use Intel processors or AMD processors.
Some factors to take into consideration while shopping for a CPU include clock speed, the number of cores and threads, overclocking capabilities, and the amount of processor cache. If you are looking to build a PC that is highly overclockable, then be sure to select an unlocked processor and add an adequate CPU cooler and power supply.
Gamers will likely want a CPU with at least six cores, as the more cores or threads a CPU has, the better overall performance it will provide. And as games advance over time, the number of recommended cores and threads will only go up. Speaking of gaming, some CPUs feature integrated graphics, which essentially is a GPU built in to a processor unit. However, those who are looking for an optimal gaming experience will still likely want to purchase a discrete or standalone graphics card.
Level Up Your Gaming Performance with a New Graphics Card
Graphics cards range wildly in both price and performance. Serious gamers looking to maximize their PCs gaming performance will likely look for GPUs that offer higher memory, overclocking support, and the ability to tinker in depth with card features.
But of course, for those of us who use PCs for more than just gaming, there are even more factors to consider. Workstation graphics cards are designed to handle power intensive programs outside of games with maximized performance. While entry level GPUs support basic computer tasks such as surfing the web and using word processing programs, more powerful cards handle more demanding programs with much greater ease. As previously stated, many CPUs now come with integrated graphics, so for those who do not plan on using graphically intensive programs, this might be an adequate option.
Gamers may want to opt for more powerful cards, as they offer several features that and lead to benefits including higher frame rates and graphical settings when playing games, VR game support, and future proofing ones system. A few select NVIDIA graphics cards can also be connected to be used in tandem, via Nvlink. Multiple video cards can further boost your systems graphical performance, though this may also require additional case space, fans, and a better cooling system.
There are a few specs that gamers should take into consideration when shopping for a GPU. The first is the memory, which is the amount of data that can be accessed by the GPU at any given time. GDDR5 is currently the most popular type of graphics memory, however upcoming cards may feature GDDR6 or even GDDR6X instead. Another spec to consider is VRAM, which is similar to system memory but dedicated specifically to graphics processing.
The number of displays that a GPU can support also matters, as it determines how many displays a user can use simultaneously with their PC. Those who like to play games on their TV and computer monitor simultaneously will want a GPU that can support at least three displays.
The Motherboard Offers a Home for Your System
The motherboard is the central home of a computer, where all of a systems components including the CPU, GPU, RAM, hard drive, and fans all connect and interact with one another. The motherboard allows all PC parts to work together properly, and is the glue that holds them together.
Shopping for motherboards can be tricky mostly due to compatibility between PC parts. Intel and AMD processors are only compatible with their respective motherboards, though there is some overlap in manufacturers. Companies such as ASUS create motherboards for both Intel and AMD. Be sure to check compatibility between your processor and motherboard before you build!
One should also consider whether a motherboard supports quad channel memory versus dual channel, its power delivery, and VRM.
One other spec to look out for is the number of connections, including SATA ports, NVMe slots, PCIe ports, and USB headers. These connections allow for the use of hard drives, SSDs, optical drives, graphics cards, and more. Most motherboards come with at least one of each, however high end boards can offer more.
There are also several different form factors to consider when shopping for boards. Motherboards have three main form factors: ATX, micro ATX, and mini ITX, though other, less common versions exist. ATX motherboards are the most common, regularly found in family desktops, workstations and gaming rigs. Micro ATX boards are smaller than ATX motherboards, which means that they can fit in much smaller PC cases and are great for minimalist builds. Mini ITX boards are some of the smallest motherboards out there; they are the best option for tiny cases, but can also be a bit more of a challenge to build with. They are fantastic for those small, subtle builds, but offer their own set of challenges.
Access Your Data with a Hard Drive or Solid State Drive
Storage is sometimes overlooked when building a new PC, but is incredibly important.
Hard disk drives are the oldest and the cheapest type of storage still used in modern PCs, and offer a great balance between price and capacity. These hard drives feature magnetic platters that store data via physical means. Disk rotational speed and cache are things to consider when buying a HDD; the faster the spindle speed, the better overall performance, the more cache generally the better performance. Spin speeds can also affect temperature, which may be something worth considering depending on where you will put your PC case.
Solid state drives do not use physical means to store data like HDDs do. Instead, they read and write data via electronic means. This means that SSDs are generally much faster, but also come with higher price tags. Lighting fast random access times (IOPS) make SSDs perfect for storing your OS on, while HDDs should be reserved for mass storage of photos, music, videos, programs you frequently use but not very often open. Speaking of usage frequency, it is important to consider writes per day as well as endurance - how many writes the drive can handle before it starts to wear out, which is measured in terabytes written (TBW). The differences in boot speed between HDDs and SSDs are enough that we recommend an SSD for your OS for just about every use case, no matter the budget.
Hard disks are available in either 2.5& inch or 3.5 inch form factors depending on the size of your case and overall capacity needed or preferred. With smaller PC cases gaining popularity, some manufacturers have begun offering mini HDDs which fit in 2.5 inch slots and offer higher storage capacities than typical mSATA or M.2 solid state drives at a lower cost and typically no loss in performance. These tiny hard drives usually come in either 1TB or 2TB sizes and connect via SATA cables instead of PCIe like larger hard drives do. Alternatively, you can also get them with M.2 connectors if you prefer that over standard SATA cables for a small boost in speed.
Computer storage options come in several other forms. SSDs are faster than HDDs and much smaller overall, but generally cost more for a given storage capacity. M.2 NVMe solid state drives offer even higher speeds than their SATA counterparts due to their increased CPU bandwidth and interface speed.
If you have limited storage slots, whether you are using a desktop or laptop, it is highly recommended you should use an SSD as your primary drive. The speed and stability offered by these drives makes them absolutely worth their cost. If your system supports it, an M.2 NVMe drive is an even better option. If you are looking to save on storage costs, however, a smaller SSD with a larger HDD is a great compromise that will allow for blazing speeds and stability on launch with lots of space to spare.
Boost Your Processing Speed with RAM
RAM is another very important, yet often overlooked when planning, piece of a PC build. When choosing RAM to buy, one needs to consider the frequency - how fast it will run, capacity - how much data it can store at once, and type - DDR4, DDR5, etc.
Desktop computers typically use DDR4 memory due to its higher bandwidth and lower power consumption, but some laptops can still use DDR3 or DDR4 depending on the CPU and motherboard. Frequency is usually measured in megahertz MHz or gigahertz GHz, with a higher number meaning faster memory. Most RAM today is dual channel, meaning that two sticks of identical RAM will run at the CPUs frequency instead of just one - this can improve performance.
RAM comes in two form factors - SO DIMMs or small outline DIMM, which is typical for laptops and some desktops that use smaller cases, and DIMMs or dual inline memory modules, which is used by most mainstream desktop builds due to its increased surface area and compatibility with most cases. DDR4 is the most common type of RAM used, though DDR5 has recently been released, and few systems are currently compatible with it.
RAM is also amongst the easiest PC component to upgrade. If you feel your PC is running slow, lagging behind, or just starting to show its age, simply clicking a few extra gigs of RAM into your motherboard can do wonders to keep it on the cutting edge.
PC Cases Offer Protection and Air Flow
Cases properly house computers, protecting PC parts from potential damage, and provide airflow to keep the system cool. PC cases come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with the most popular form factor being the mid tower.
Mid tower cases typically measure around 18 x 8 x 16 and offer enough space to install multiple storage devices, graphics cards, and fans. Full tower cases are much larger and can measure up to 27 x 10 x 25, making them a better fit for those who plan on installing lots of hardware or want more room for cable management. Mini ITX cases are much smaller, measuring just 6.7 x 6.7 x 3.3, and are designed for use with Mini ITX motherboards.

5 Computer Hardware Review Sites For The PC Enthusiast
Whether you are looking into building a new computer or just like to keep up with the latest in computer hardware, the internet provides a whole smörgåsbord of options when it comes to computer hardware reviews. Here, you will see some of the better, more reliable sites on the internet.
A few things must be considered when looking at computer hardware review sites. First, quality. Are the reviews useful and balanced? Second, quantity. How much of the current hardware does the site review? Third, method.
Does the review give evidence like benchmarks and comparisons, or does the reviewer go on their feelings?
Most people's first instinct would be to just Google the name of a component when they want to see what people think of a it. This method works fine if you just testing the waters or you already know which sites know what they are talking about and which don't. However, if you don't have a component in mind and are just starting out, or are new to the computer hardware review world and don't know which sites have good reviews; this list should get you started.
Let's get to it.
Tom's Hardware Reviews
Tom's Hardware Reviews is a UK-based review site. I have relied on them many times to get good, honest reviews. Their site is offered in a bunch of languages, making it a great resource for non-English speakers.
The reviews are thorough and give a good feel for the hardware. Reviews provide technical specs, benchmarks, and nice comparisons with alternatives.
On top of what you'd expect, Tom's Hardware Reviews also has a number of features useful to someone just starting out looking at hardware. Some examples are monthly looks at best values in several areas including CPUs and Graphics Cards.
Overall, Tom's site is nice, but does have some shortcomings. Although everything is nicely organized on the site, it is sometimes difficult to find exactly what you are looking for. A search doesn't always bring up an exact component and a little digging is required. I find this to be an uncommon issue, but felt it should be mentioned.
Overclockers Club
Overclockers Club is another great resource. Like Tom's, the site provides reviews of all sorts of computer hardware, but also has some nice guides for a beginner overclocker. You can access the guides by clicking "Guides" in the top navigation bar.
Overclockers Club is laid out in a very fluid way, making finding an article easy as pie. If you just click "Reviews" at the top, you are given a list of reviews in chronological order.
If you are looking for a particular piece of hardware, you can just search for it and it comes right up with what you're looking for.
The reviews are quite good. They provide a lot benchmarks and explain them in context.
They give a nice feel for all aspects of a component, even down to how they look and feel physically.
Overclockers Club does not suffer from the issue I found with Tom's. Searches always seem to return just what I am looking for.
HardOCP is another great computer hardware review site. What I like about this site is it's overall layout. Instead of a traditional navigation bar, the site has a drop down menu with the links to the other sections of the site.
This helps keep the page nice looking and uncluttered.
The reviews on the site are well done, providing great information on all sorts of computer hardware, including harder to find things like water cooling systems. They even have a very goofy "Miscellaneous" section which provides reviews of anything from solid state drives to eyeglasses.
Another nice feature of the articles is a good level of humor that keeps you entertained while reading what could quickly become a very dry topic.
Some reviews do not provide as many benchmarks as I would like to see. For this reason, I wouldn't rely on just HardOCP for my reviews, but definitely use it as a great supplement.
Legion Hardware
Yet another great review site, Legion Hardware should be a stop on the path of anyone looking into computer hardware. This site has a lot going for it, including the best organization style of any site I have seen as of yet.
First, when you click "Hardware" at the top, you are brought to a page that lists the different sections very clearly.
Then, when you navigate to the type of hardware your looking for; all of the reviews are listed in such a way so that finding a particular card is extremely simple.
The articles can be sorted in a bunch of different ways, making it even easier to get to the particular article you are looking for.
The reviews on Legion Hardware are of superb quality, providing a good number of benchmarks and describing all aspects of a piece of hardware. Also, they have a good database of articles, so it should not be hard to find what you are looking for on their site.
Hardware Canucks
The last review site I will list is Hardware Canucks, a Canadian-based site. This site has a large number of review sections, even including things like consumer electronics.
The reviews are quite good, providing a lot of benchmarks, which are always good when looking to buy hardware.
The search feature works very well, bringing up exactly what you are looking for without any hassle.
A built in "Price Compare" feature is also good and helps differentiate Hardware Canucks from other review sites.
Of course, these are not the be-all-end-all of review sites. Everyone has their personal favorite website for one reason or another. All of these sites are great both for a beginner, just getting into hardware, or a seasoned veteran trying to keep up with the latest technology.
Know any other great review sites? Let us know in the comments below.

Best Places to Visit in Rostov-on-Don
Photo by Express to Russia staff
An ideal day of sight-seeing in Rostov-on-Don:
9am: Stroll along the main street, Bolshaya Sadovaya, with a guide to point out the many hidden and unhidden points of interest. 11pm: Explore Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts and then luncheon at one of the many cafes on the main street. 14pm: Catch a bus to the Rostov Virgin's Nativity Cathedral and marvel at its golden frescoes, then explore the flea market outside and try local street-food. 18pm: Take in the sheer size of the Maxim Gorky Rostov-on-Don Drama Theatre, then go inside to be even more astonished by the astounding dexterity of Russian ballerinas.
Rostov has always been a city of strong, fearless and slightly ferocious people. In the 1570’s the city was established by the Cossacks and it remained their home for more than two centuries till the early 20th century when their tsarist loyalties forced them to flee from the Red forces. Then in the infamous 90’s, Rostov was taken over by the Mafia who set about making it Russia’s capital of crime. Thankfully, the only ‘strongmen’ you’ll see swaggering down Rostov’s streets today are the rappers who have kickstarted Rostov’s burgeoning music and alternative art scene.
Surprisingly, considering its history of barbarous inhabitants, Rostov is also known as the city of smiles and it’s easy to see why. Situated in the southern part of Russia , bordering Ukraine, it gets plenty of sunshine hours. To make the most of the rivers, seas and vast parks on a vacation in Rostov, there’s no better time to go than in summer. But, it is worth bearing in mind that unlike St Petersburg or Moscow , the city can be thoroughly explored in just two days. That being said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay for longer. Rostov-on-Don may be a smallish city, but the surrounding region is rich in both natural and historical sites; take the magnificent Azov sea to name just one.

Bolshaya Sadovaya Street
Lined with colorful and wonderfully whimsical mansions and emporiums, the main street of Rostov perfectly encapsulates this sunshine-city. It’s a good 3km in length and the majority of the city’s attractions are located on it. As there are no ‘red-buses’ in Rostov, it might be a good idea to get a guide to show you around. So many of the city’s most historic events took place here that it’s practically an open-air museum. Though the city was badly damaged during the Nazi occupation, there are still quite a few opulent 19th century buildings, like the City Duma and Municipal Council. Other buildings to keep an eye out for while strolling down the avenue include:
- Staro-Pokrovsky Church which boasts a dizzying amount of arches.
- Rostov State Music Theater. One of the largest theatres in southern Russia is also the most architecturally unconventional, being designed in the shape of a giant, white piano!
- Martyn brothers’ house. It’s hard not to miss the distinctive red-brick, gothic building which stands out as much as its English owners must have when they moved to this town 200 years ago to set up a trading post. Nowadays, it serves as an insightful museum covering the city’s history.
- Chernova House. This mansion once housed Rostov’s most famous lady, Maria Chernova, who was wrongly accused of adultery. Legendary soirees were held inside its delicately decorated walls and though today’s tenant, being a bank, isn’t much of an entertainer, this building is still as beautiful as it once was all those years ago.
Rostov Virgin's Nativity Cathedral
As the Cossacks were loyal to both the Tsar and church, Rostov was traditionally a very religious city. Sadly, once the Bolsheviks got hold of the city in the early 1900’s, they mercilessly demolished almost all the main churches in the city. The Virgin's Nativity Cathedral is one of the few which survived and it is now seen as the heart of Rostov. Standing tall between the Central Market and Cathedral Square, almost all the buses end their routes here and, a few meters beyond its heavenly-white walls, is the Old Town which— with its promenade, eateries, bars and flea markets— is the perfect place for a stroll.
Address: 58, Ulitsa Stanislavskogo, Rostov-on-Don
“Tachanka-Rostovchanka” Monument
St Petersburg has its Peter the Great statue and Rostov has what can roughly be translated as a ‘four-horse machine-gun cart’. Quite a mouthful to say and even more of a mouthful to look at! Built to mark the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution, its overwhelming size was meant to show the sheer might of the Bolsheviks. This is perhaps the best photo-spot in the city; with the river Don flowing directly underneath, it looks as if the horses are plunging into the water.
Address: left bank of the Don, A-135 Highway
Monument to A.P. Chekhov
It’s a little known fact that the famous Chekhov, father of modernism in theatre, was the son of a former Ukrainian serf and Russian cloths-woman. This unassuming genius grew up in the south of Russia, not far from Rostov, and on Pushkinskaya street there’s a touching, life-sized statue of the man. Also, oft unknown is the fact that Mendeleev and Pushkin also lived in the Rostov region for a good part of their lives.
Address: 151, Pushkinskaya Ulitsa, Rostov-on-Don
Museums and Theatres
Museum of the north caucasus railway.
Running through Rostov’s heart is the North Caucasus Railway which links Russia’s best vacation destinations, Sochi and Anapa, on the Black sea with the Caspian and Azov seas. Paying tribute to this beautiful route, this railway museum tracks the history of the many trains that chugged along its tracks. The collection is rather impressive including over 50 steam engines as well as a dozen different freight and passenger carriages and even a water crane! Apart from the trains, there are also other artefacts on display from the 1800s including telephones, maps and historic photographs.
Address: 73, Ulitsa Tsiolkovskogo, Rostov-on-Don
Opening hours: 10:00-17:00 Tue-Sun
Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts
This may be Rostov’s smallest and prettiest museum. Though it was only founded in 1938, it looks as if it came straight from a fairytale; even the interiors are unbelievably ornate for a building that was built by the Soviets. The paintings on show generally focus on local landscape artists but the museum has in the past displayed Picasso, so it’s worth having a look at their program (http://www.romii.ru). At less than 200rub./ticket this museum, petite as it may be, is well worth a visit for art-lovers.
Address: 115, Pushkinskaya Ulitsa, Rostov-on-Don

Another of Rostov’s small museums, all the displays of this museum fit neatly into one medium hall. Rich in variety this museum may not be, but it is certainly brimming with fascinating stories. Every single detail associated with space travel from the different types of space-suits to satellites is covered. The genuine Soyuz space capsule which returned from space in 2007 is perhaps the most interesting attraction out of the hundred or so items exhibited.
Address: 231/2, Stachki Ave., Rostov-on-Don
Opening hours: 09:00-16:00 Mon-Sun
Maxim Gorky Rostov-on-Don Drama Theatre
Photo by Anita Jankovic on Unsplash
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you’d have to look far and wide to find a fanatic of Soviet constructivist architecture. It’s brutal, intimidating and frankly just plain cheap design doesn’t give much material for appreciation. Though the Maxim Gorky theatre may be all of the above, it is still a worth visit. Designed in the style of a Russian ‘combinator’ or harvester, it is the epitome of the Soviet hard-headed approach to architecture. But how a giant, caterpillar-like tractor could be associated with the ballet is something perhaps only the Soviets could ever understand…
