Republic Day is observed in India every year on January 26. India lived under British colonisation for hundreds of years. After many years of freedom struggle, India got its independence in 1947. Around two and half years later, India became a Democratic Republic. On January 26 1950, the Consitution of India came into effect. On this day, our motherland was declared a Sovereign, Secular, Socialistic, and Democratic Republic. It means the people of India have the power to choose the government for the country. The celebrations include the flag hoising ceremony where the tri-colour is unfurled. The military band plays the National Anthem along with a 21 gun salute to honour the lives lost in the freedom struggle. republic day essay in english 10 lines for class 1

History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly.  Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947.  After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of the British rule and birth of India as a Republic State.

Republic Day Celebrations

Indians celebrate January 26 each year with lots of enthusiasm and zeal. On this day, people forget their religion, caste, creed, sex, and more. It brings together the country as a whole. It truly shows the diversity of our country. The capital city of India, New Delhi, celebrates it with a Republic Day Parade that showcases the might of the Indian Military and the cultural diversity of our country.

These parades take place in other cities as well, where a lot of schools participate in. It is a delight to watch the children and professionals put in so much effort. The way they grace the parade makes one proud of their country.  We also do National Flag Hoisting on this day. In New Delhi, after the President of India hoists our National Flag, 21 guns salute follow it with the national anthem played by the military band.

Further, in schools, March Past takes place and it is mandatory for every student to attend the celebrations. In many schools, they distribute sweets on this day as well. While it is a very joyous day, we must not forget the struggle of freedom that our forefathers took part in. Moreover, it is a day to celebrate the spirit of freedom and make sure to help India reach greater heights in the future.

Republic Day Essay in English for Students: 100, 200, 500 Words

India's citizens celebrate Republic Day on January 26 yearly with great excitement and passion. It is celebrated to recognise the significance of being the Sovereign Democratic Republic, which was established on January 26, 1950, following the implementation of the Indian Constitution. Additionally, it is a time to recall and celebrate India's historic independence from British rule. India ultimately gained its independence from British domination on August 15, 1947. For more than 200 years, the British ruled the country.

India gained independence, but a government was urgently needed to ensure the country's smooth operation. The nation's citizens commemorate and honour the great leaders and freedom warriors on this day for their contributions to the country's liberation.

The day that our Constitution was implemented in 1950 is commemorated as Republic Day on January 26 each year. After this day, our country truly became democratic and independent. The diligent effort of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the many other freedom fighters who fought and gave their lives for the country's sovereignty resulted in the adoption of the Indian Constitution, which is the fundamental law being enacted.

People of all races, religions, colours, and backgrounds come together on this day to commemorate the event with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm. The Indian Military participates in the event and displays the grandeur associated with it in a large parade held in Delhi, the nation's capital. The parade, which begins after the president hoists the national flag and citizens honour martyrs who gave their lives while defending the nation, displays the country's pride and vibrant diversity.

Schools host a variety of cultural events in honour of Republic Day. With tremendous energy and excitement, students take part in different programmes. All educational institutions hold competitions for essay writing, speeches, sketching and painting, among other things. Students also perform plays and skits on the freedom fighters who fought for India's independence.

Republic Day holds a historical significance for the nation. The nation first put the Constitution into effect on January 26, 1950. The Indian National Congress elected Jawaharlal Nehru as its leader, and on January 26, 1930, Poorna Swaraj, or Independence Day, was inaugurated.

Republic Day has a significant historical impact. On August 15, 1947, Indians took their freedom back from the Britishers but we had no constitution, political parties, or governance structure. India put the Constitution into effect on January 26, 1950. On January 26, 1930, Poorna Swaraj was proclaimed, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was chosen to lead the Indian National Congress. However, it was only on August 15, 1947 that we gained our independence.

After India gained independence, a unique constitutive parliament was chosen to establish the Indian Constitution. Dr B.R. Ambedkar headed the constitution-drafting committee. Other nations' constitutions were also considered when drafting India’s constitution. The Indian Constitution was created, at last, 166 days later.

It was designed to guarantee equal rights to all Indian citizens, regardless of their religion, culture, caste, sex, or creed. The Constitution of India was adopted and put into effect on January 26, 1950, and that day is known as Republic Day. Additionally, it signifies the end of British control and the establishment of India as a Republic State.

The country’s capital, New Delhi, hosts the Republic Day parade, which the Ministry of Defense organises. India's 3-day Republic Day festivities begin at the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, with a meaningful ceremony. It continues on Rajpath through the India Gate to Raisina Hill.

India's cultural, social, and military strengths are on display in the parade. Nine to twelve distinct Indian Army battalions march past alongside the Navy and Air Force while dressed in full regalia and official insignia. This parade includes twelve contingents from different paramilitary groups in India and police forces. The President of India, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, accepts the salute.

Every Indian citizen values Republic Day. This holiday, one of India's national celebrations, evokes everyone's sense of patriotism. This is one of the occasions that aids in introducing the younger generation to our wonderful Indian heritage and culture. This is the day on which we honour the great leaders and freedom warriors who gave their lives in defence of the nation.

Republic Day also teaches us the value of togetherness and how it supported the Indian freedom movement in its struggle against the British Empire, which was far more potent. Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolence movement showed us how to overcome an adversary far more powerful than us without using force or spilling any blood. The Constitution ensures that there is no caste, creed, or religious discrimination in the country, and Republic Day serves as a reminder of this.

On the eve of Republic Day, the Indian President awards ‘Padmas’ to the people of India. To receive a Bharat Ratna or Bhushan Padma prize, you do not need to hold a specific title. A special committee nominates people. The Bharat Ratna and the Padma Awards are the two highest civilian honours. There are three different categories for the Padma Bhushan Award: Padma Vibhusan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

The second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhusan, is granted for exceptional and distinguished service.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian honour granted for exceptionally meritorious service.

The Padma Shri is India's fourth-highest civilian honour, granted to individuals for exemplary service.

Republic Day is a Significant Moment in India's History

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. So, the 26 th of January was declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.

After Independence, the country did not have any self-made official Constitution, instead, its laws were based on modified colonial acts. So, establishing an official constitution for our own country was the utmost task in front of the Government of India. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Though it was enacted and adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 th November 1949, it came into force on 26 th January, 1950.

Significance of 26 th January

It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

January 26 th , however, marked a great event in India’s struggle for freedom. It was, therefore, in the favour of all that January 26 should be selected as the Date of Commencement of the new Constitution.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as a day of national significance with great joy and pride.

How is Republic Day celebrated in India?

Indians celebrate Republic Day with great jubilation and joy all over the country. The day honours India's constitution as an independent nation. Schools and colleges hoist the national flag on Republic Day. Cultural events celebrating India's struggle for independence are organised across the country. The President of India hoists the national flag at India Gate in New Delhi. In New Delhi, the most prestigious parade takes place on Rajpath. An Indian President conducts the parade, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Defence. The event not only displays India's military prowess but also promotes its diverse culture. In addition, the event pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. India's Prime Minister honours the martyrs by placing a ringlet at India Gate's Amar Jawan Jyoti. The ceremony continues with a 21-gun salute, national anthem, and hoisting of the national flag. As a result, the brave soldiers are presented with the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Children and ordinary citizens who have shown courage in difficult circumstances are also recognized with awards.

Those who receive a gallantry award salute the President in gratitude. Then, India's military prowess is on display. There is also a march-past that the armed forces, police, and National Cadet Corps take part in, during which the President of India is saluted by these regiments. When the fighter jets of the Indian Air Force fly past Janpath, the ceremony concludes. The Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, but Delhi is the centre of the largest celebration. Every year, millions of people have the opportunity to watch a live Webcast of the Republic Day Parade. 'Video on demand' is made available after the event as a way to view the exclusive footage. The flag is also unfurled in the state capitals, though on a smaller scale, where the Governor unfurls the flag. At district headquarters, subdivisions, talukas, and panchayats, the celebrations take place in a similar manner.

The official end to the Republic Day celebrations is Beating the Retreat, which takes place after all of the celebrations are over. From 26th to 29th, the government buildings are beautifully lit in glittering lights. On January 29, the third day after Republic Day, the beating retreat ceremony is held. During the Drummer's Call, drummers perform solo performances. The bands march back playing the popular martial tune, Saare Jahan Se Achcha. At exactly 6 p.m., the National Flag is lowered and the National Anthem is sung, marking the end of Republic Day celebrations.

Conclusion

Republic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm in India, and we should remember the long journey to freedom and the struggles of our forefathers to transform the country into a sovereign nation. It is a day for all Indians to celebrate the essence of liberty and help India accomplish its freedom fighters' dreams. In celebration of Republic Day, citizens are encouraged to display their patriotism and pride. The students pledge to live as good citizens and help make their country a happier and more peaceful one.

Republic Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by many brave-hearted Indians to realize their pledge of complete independence from British rule. This day is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm.

The main reason for celebrating Republic Day is that on this day the constitution of our country came into effect. However, there is another history of the great day, which is quite impressive. It started in December 1929 under the presidency of Pandit Nehru at the Indian National Congress convention held in Lahore. In this, the congress announced that if India were not given Domination still until January 26, 1930, India would declare itself completely Independent, but when this day came. The British government did not respond to this issue. Then, Congress started its active movement from that day to achieve complete freedom. This is the reason that when our country was liberated, on January 26, that day the constitution of India was established.

It is one of three National Festivals, the other two are ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ and ‘Independence Day.’ Being our national festival, every school, college, office, shop, factory, and other business establishment remains closed on this day due to the celebration of Republic Day. It is treated as a National Holiday. Although Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, the major festivals are visible at Rajpath in New Delhi, with the President, the Prime Minister, and other ministers in attendance. The Republic Day march in Delhi is the most significant and imperative of the processions denoting the Republic Day festivities in India. Indian Republic Days’ fascination keeps going for three days. The motorcade exhibits India’s protection ability and social and social legacy. Preceding the beginning of the Parade, the Prime Minister lays a botanical wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a remembrance of the fallen fighter at the India Gate towards one side of Rajpath, which is trailed by two minutes of silence in the memory of the fallen warriors. The sacrifice of martyrs who lived for their country is remembered on this day. From that point, the Prime Minister arrives at the central dais at Rajpath to join different dignitaries. Subsequently, the president, along with the chief guests, duly escorted by the President’s bodyguard on horseback, arrives to join others at Rajpath. The National Flag is unfurled by the president, after which the National Anthem is played along with a 21-gun salute. Next, essential honours like the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra are given away by the President before the regiments of Armed Forces begin their walk past. The President presents awards of bravery to the members of the armed forces for their extraordinary mettle in the field and the civilians, who have farmed themselves by their distinctive demonstrations of courage in various circumstances. Youngsters who get the National Bravery Award are observed riding on vividly or specially designed elephants or vehicles.

For the event, the best NCC cadets are chosen from all over the country along with school students from different schools in the capital. Each Presentation shows the variety and wealth of the way of life in India. Around 1200 schoolchildren present dances and other cultural activities as a feature of the parade. Next comes the Motorcade which shows bike units of the Armed Forces and civil security services along with a flypast by the Indian Air Force planes and helicopters carrying the national banner and the banners of the armed forces.

All the states of India additionally show specific Jhanki identities with their way of life, customs, and advancement after freedom, demonstrating the presence of ‘Solidarity in Diversity in India.’ Cultural moves are displayed by individuals along with singing and dancing. Towards the end of the occasion, a tri-shading (saffron, white, and green) bloomers in the sky from planes, creating the image of the National Flag.

Republic Day is one of the three national festivals of our country, and it is the day that reminds us of the importance of our freedom. It is a Gazetted Public Holiday in India, and people all over India celebrate Republic Day with a great spirit of patriotism and joy.

In India, Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to commemorate the day our Constitution took effect. When India gained independence in 1947, it did not have a permanent written constitution, and its laws were based on an updated version of the British-established Government of India Act 1935. The Drafting Committee for an Indian Constitution was formed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar after a fortnight on August 29, 1947. A celebration of Indian Independence Day is observed on the 26th of January in remembrance of the historic Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) made by the Indian National Congress in 1929.

The 4-day ceremony begins on the morning of 26 th  January with a wreath-laying at India Gate by the Prime Minister of India in honour of those who sacrificed their lives protecting the nation. The Republic Day Celebrations are concluded at Vijay Chowk on 29 th  January with a beating retreat led by the President of India. Ceremonially, the chief guest (the President) is escorted on horseback by a cavalry unit, which then performs the National Salute, followed by the National Anthem (Jan-Gan-Man).

The first Republic Day parade took place at Rajpath in 1950. It has been a tradition to invite the chief guest since the first Republic Day celebrations. It was requested that President Sukarno speak about Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch rule.

On the first day of Republic Day festivities, the National Flag is unfurled at 8 a.m. The National Flag was designed by freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, who hailed from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Having undergone numerous revisions, the current state of the national flag was adopted on 22nd July 1947.

Rashtrapati Bhavan is the starting point and India Gate is the ending point. Vijay Chowk is at the beginning of the route, which begins at Amar Jawan Jyoti, continues along Rajpath, passes India Gate, and ends at India Gate.
