If you are looking to recruit PhD-level talent , there are a few things you need to do. The following article will give you some ideas on finding and attracting the best of the best.

A Ph.D., or doctor of philosophy degree, is typically a three to four-year graduate education program. A Ph.D. candidate typically takes anywhere from 10 to 12 courses and completes a thesis. After the coursework, and based on their performance and thesis topic, a candidate will be awarded either a doctorate or master’s degree. A Ph.D. candidate will also have to pass a series of examinations.

Some PhD job seekers are looking for specific types of work, such as academic research. Most candidates, however, are open to a variety of work. Here are some of the promising fields the PhD can look into.

Post Doc Fellow

Postdocs are usually hired to do research work instead of teaching academic courses and may be required to perform administrative tasks. Postdocs are also required to publish research papers in prestigious journals. 

Many people see postdoctoral fellowships as stepping stones towards senior positions in academe or industry.

Research and Development in Universities

Research and development in universities are typically composed of a variety of areas. These areas may include engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, medicine, and arts and humanities. Most universities have ongoing research projects in these areas.

Most candidates pursuing PhD degrees in different academic subjects can apply for posts working at this level. With the proper credentials, they may even be able to advance to tenured professor positions.

Research and Development in Commercial Product Development

The vital role of research and development in commercial product development is to develop new products, improve the existing ones, or adopt current technology.

Research and development departments are also responsible for understanding the customer needs. Most R&D departments today are looking for an opportunity to broaden their horizons by crossing departmental boundaries.

Faculty Teaching Positions

University faculty teaching positions for PhD level job seekers are not always the easiest, but one of the best ways for such candidates to work their way up in the academe. Many universities now prefer to hire young, energetic PhD graduates to teach undergraduate and graduate students.

One place PhD job seekers can find jobs is at a think tank. Think tanks usually research government, private, or overseas entities. Some of the duties involved with this position include managing the think tank’s operations, conducting research on behalf of clients, and helping clients communicate information to targeted audiences. A PhD, in this case, is a must.

Many organizations have started hiring PhDs as they provide a great deal of knowledge and experience. Many organizations hire PhDs because they want employees with a lot of knowledge and experience who can provide insight into how an organization works.

PhDs are hired for their expertise to solve complex problems that no one else has been able to figure out. They can take a project from start to finish, which other employees cannot do because of lack of necessary education level and knowledge in the field.

Universities and Colleges

Some Universities and Colleges are hiring PhDs to teach their students. PhDs are currently working as professors. A small number of these institutions have long-standing policies requiring a Ph.D. degree. In contrast, other schools require a Ph.D. to be appointed as an assistant professor before becoming a full professor with tenure.

The hiring of PhDs to teach at Universities and Colleges is due to their advanced knowledge in scholarly research. This is not surprising since they have been trained extensively in the field of study associated with their degree.

Pharmaceutical Companies

Pharmaceutical companies are keen on hiring the PhDs because they tend to be knowledgeable about drugs and can help to increase the production and distribution of drugs. They are also skilled in handling and operating lab equipment.

STEM Companies

Many STEM companies have started to hire PhD’s. Within the last few years, there has been a push to hire PhD’s in many STEM industries.

For example, a biotech company may need a PhD with experience in cancer research. In this case, they would be looking for graduate work related to cancer and experience working with live subjects testing new drugs and treatments.

A PhD with a background in robotics will have much more experience in building, programming, and testing new robots. This person would also likely understand the complicated components within a robot, which makes them the ideal candidate.

Any PhD will be in high demand if they major in STEM-focused fields such as engineering or computer sciences. Computer science PhDs specifically are highly sought after and can often make more money than counterparts who only have a master’s degree.

The government has been hiring PhDs to fill in positions. The government hires PhDs for a variety of reasons. For one, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment in all sciences to grow by 12% through 2022. Many federal agencies are also looking to employ technicians or lab personnel with a PhD. Agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) also offer career-track positions requiring a PhD.

Since museums are places where people go to see art, the museum needs to have someone onsite to talk about the works in detail. This is something that could be difficult for someone without a PhD.

Someone with a PhD would also use the knowledge they have gained from their research and translate that into something meaningful for museum-goers.

• Tip one: post your hiring information to as many academic job sites and social media platforms as possible.
• Tip two: reach out to the people who work in university recruitment departments at other universities you are interested in. Ask them if they could share their staffing needs with you and then use their contacts to find qualified candidates for your position
• Tip three: offer various incentives, such as tuition remission for spouses or children, for international workers to come work at your university.
• Tip four: get a head start on the competition by looking into who has recently been hired and contacting their former supervisors or managers to ask them if they know of anyone else seeking employment.
• Tip five: attend conferences in your field, network with other academics from different universities, then ask them who they know that might be interested in the position you want to fill.

The current academic job market has become increasingly competitive for PhD graduates, which has made it important for them to explore the available options and careers after PhD. PhD holders exceed the limited tenure positions and are often forced to move to non-academic positions or remain underemployed in career paths after PhD that often require lesser degrees. Graduates of some fields may better navigate non-academic labor markets than others. 1

For example, STEM, business, and economics graduates are more likely to obtain industry-specific technical and applied skills. But, others wondering how to get into industry after PhD may not recognize the extent to which their problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills may be used outside academia.

There are many career options for PhD holders in the market and some reflection will help you identify the direction in which you want to go.
• Decide location : Your preferred location can influence your job search. Think about where you’d like to live and the job opportunities and career options for PhD holders available there. Often, you might find that you want to go back to your home country to pursue a career after PhD and would have to adjust your job search depending on the type of jobs available locally. Therefore, looking for the right job in the right place can reduce your search time.
• Network : Many PhDs underestimate the importance of networking effectively and having a good communication strategy in determining their careers after PhD. Jobs received through university networks tend to align with your education and offer better career opportunities after PhD. 3 So find some time to attend events and network with stakeholders in top companies and other universities. Speaking to senior colleagues about your job search can also help you understand their experiences and learn how to get into industry after PhD. Finally, make sure to have a LinkedIn profile to connect with people having similar interests and careers after PhD.
• Career centers : Your university career center can also offer guidance on possible careers after PhD, especially finding a good position upon graduating. They can also help you familiarize yourself with institutions that award research grants and their requirements.

• Strong resume : When applying for non-academic jobs, focus on enhancing the many transferable skills from your PhD, such as:

-Problem-solving skills – mention the many research problems solved

Use the following strategies to enhance the quality of your CV or resume for better

• Highlight achievements: Your CV should include sufficient detail to show a selection committee that you are the perfect candidate for the job. Update your CV regularly to include recent achievements and skills gained that are relevant in careers after PhD.
• Tailor-made for the job: Fine-tune your CV to meet the job requirements. An academic CV should be different from a non-academic one to match the needs of that particular opportunity. A 1-2 page summary of your experiences and expertise is sufficient for an industry job, but your academic CV should include a full record of your work and can be much longer.
• Add specific, credible information: To secure the best career after PhD, ensure the CV you submit is supported by sufficient details of specific experiences that highlight your efforts and skills.
• Add evidence: Incorporate quantitative evidence or proof to support the facts in your CV. Do not fabricate information that will crumble under scrutiny and mar your career options after PhD.
• Start early and keep looking: Finally, start your job search early and keep looking until you have found a job that meets your requirements.

At least 35 of America’s billionaires are PhDs. As academic jobs become scarce, doctorates should get down to business

Samantha Dewalt is managing director of the Lehigh@NasdaqCenter, an exclusive education-industry partnership between Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center in San Francisco .

Traditionally, a doctoral degree is regarded almost exclusively as a passport to scholarly distinction and academic tenure. Any person who committed the time, energy, and expense to attain a PhD appeared inevitably destined for the academy, free to pursue knowledge without commercial intent.

So goes the standard rationale—and training—for a doctorate. Candidates are groomed for careers in academia, where they will research, teach, and publish. That tradition, though well-intentioned, is overdue for a drastic expansion.

Saving research from ‘the valley of death’

Such an expansion has already begun. In December, the National Science Foundation awarded $100 million to 18 academic institutions all across the U.S. to “speed and scale research into products and services that benefit the nation.” The first-ever Accelerating Research Translation awards are designed to enable university scholars to convert academic innovation into commercial value and societal purpose. Each school awarded will partner with a mentoring institution of higher education already equipped with “a robust ecosystem for translational research.”

Lehigh University is among the recipients of the abovementioned National Science Foundation awards, with Carnegie Mellon University acting as its peer mentor. The $6 million award will be earmarked specifically to increase the translation of scientific discoveries in engineering, science, health, humanities, business, education, and other disciplines—by faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers into prototypes, products, and programs that will benefit society.

Meanwhile, as the supply of jobs in academia struggles to keep up with the demand, more PhDs are turning to careers in industry. In 2020, The Princeton Review warned, “If it’s your ambition to become a professor, you should be aware that the PhD. track is no guarantee of a life in  academia .” As such, candidates will need to be prepared differently. 

Make no mistake: Some college graduates bearing PhDs have proven highly enterprising. It is estimated that the private sector now employs about as many PhD graduates as educational institutions.

Most research finds that between one-third and one-half of all PhD graduates globally stay in academia , while others may migrate to the private sector. Almost daily, some entrepreneurial PhDs launch new ventures that eventually hit the jackpot. Indeed, Forbes  has reported that “at least” 35 U.S. billionaires obtained a PhD before plunging into business.

But let’s face it: Academics are rarely trained to be entrepreneurs. They typically focus on conducting research, publishing manuscripts, and at times, developing intellectual property, but without cultivating the business knowledge or resources to turn innovations into viable market solutions. And it’s a shame when university research languishes on the shelf, never reaching the market—the so-called “valley of death”.

How America’s top universities are doing it

Universities are amping up efforts to educate PhD students about how to better capitalize on a doctoral degree. At Lehigh University, we have conducted a competitive analysis of what other higher education institutions, particularly those highly regarded for entrepreneurial activity, are doing to engage PhD students in entrepreneurial courses and programs. Among the schools we studied were Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Dartmouth, and UC Berkeley. Overall, our analysis identified a need—and opportunity—to transform PhD education.

More particularly, we found that although most of these top-tier universities offer entrepreneurship education for graduate and undergraduate students alike, few target PhD students. We also learned that because most of the graduate courses in entrepreneurship originate in business or engineering schools, few are truly interdisciplinary. We also found that PhD students are more likely to participate in entrepreneurial activity if they have faculty advisors who are themselves entrepreneurs or at least entrepreneurial-minded.

Stanford University particularly stands out as an exemplary entrepreneurial environment for students. It benefits from education-industry partnerships that provide access to the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley. UC Berkeley distinguishes itself, too, for its emphasis on interdisciplinary entrepreneurial development and close collaboration with nearby startup incubators.

Dartmouth College pioneered the first engineering   PhD innovation program  that provides entrepreneurial training to turn research discoveries into market solutions. The PhD fellows take additional coursework in business, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and spend up to six months at an industry internship. 

Entrepreneurship education should be democratized. Other universities should follow the examples set by the top-tiers. All students—even those on a budget—should have access to the equivalent of an Ivy League experience.

Our university is taking a step in this new direction, to better expose our PhD students to entrepreneurial experiences and career pathways. Last fall, we introduced a hands-on, real-world, interdisciplinary course on entrepreneurship for PhD students. Built on a model designed by the National Science Foundation, the course is offered for credit and available to graduate students across disciplines through Lehigh@NasdaqCenter, partnering with the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Lehigh’s Office of Technology Transfer. 

It’s time for doctorates to get down to business. More PhDs should treat the ideas that emerge from scholarship as entrepreneurial opportunities. But first, they must know how to harness all that valuable education in the service of both our society and our economy.
