20+ creative alternative homework ideas for teachers

When giving homework, it must always be based on learning goals your students have to reach, just like in your lessons. But it’s sad to see that lots of teachers are using homework as extra lesson time. Of course, as a teacher, you’re on a clock. But that doesn’t mean your students have to suffer from it and keep working on those boring textbooks and worksheets at home.

Consider goals like attitudes, real-life experiences, and practice, physical exercise, social encounters, creative solutions, and philanthropy as crucial as your lesson goals. These are things students don’t just pick up in your classroom. These are things they pick up in life.

In this blog post, I’ll give you some innovative homework ideas that will engage your students more. These alternatives to traditional homework will thereby also teach your students new things that can’t be taught in the classroom. You will find a variety of homework ideas: online and offline.

I will mention homework alternatives for primary school and high school. Some of these ideas can be changed a little bit, so they are the perfect fit for the right audience.

You can divide homework tasks into the following themes or categories:

Many rope-skipping songs let your students do different tricks while rope-skipping. This is an excellent opportunity for homework as well. Ask your students to transform a rope skipping song into a song with lesson content. Let them count or spell or even sum up the different states or capitals. To engage their lifestyles even harder, you can additionally give them the assignment to create a TikTok in which they are jumping and singing.

14. Walking quest

If there aren’t any walking quests in the neighborhood, you could ask your students to create a walking quest like this for their fellow students. What a fun day it will be!

15. Obstacle Quiz

In order for students to answer the questions, they have to run and pass a challenging parkour. This is a fun homework exercise, and in the end, it’s a great lesson starter or lesson end.

16. Swimming games

After the activity, they can fill out an Exit Slip:

Here’s another homework tip: Don’t call homework “homework”. Call it a challenge. Homework has become a negative word for students, and I bet they start rolling their eyes as you even mention the word.

Worksheets For Fun: Homework That Makes Sense.

In this article, you will read about some fun alternatives to homework for second, possibly third graders (depending on where your kiddos are) – worksheets for fun. These fun worksheets were born from an idea that I had as a second-grade teacher, and that has been on my mind forever. 

Every time the new school year begins, I just start getting overwhelmed by the idea of homework . The truth is I do believe in homework and parents of my second graders want homework too for their kids. 

I’ve tried high frequency words worksheets, short reading comprehension stories, word lists to practice spelling and sentence writing, and so did you, perhaps.

It all sounds OK, but at some point, of their year it becomes so unnecessary, boring, and kids start complaining a lot…

My daughter went to second grade last year, and her ELA homework was primarily prepping for grammar and reading tests or lists of words to practice by selecting an option from a choice board: spelling the work with big and small letters, rainbow writing, creating a song, rhyming words, illustrating, and many others. 

Because my child has anxiety around academic tasks (she has selective mutism anxiety), the ELA homework was somewhat a burden. Not only has it become boring after the first marking period, but my daughter also started selecting the same choices because, to tell the truth, “making a song” and “writing words in small and big letters” were either unachievable or senseless. 

And therefore, worksheets for fun were created! 

Why are “worksheets for fun”  the best alternative to homework?

Without going into extremes like “no homework” in Finland (even though educational system in Finland is my heaven), I think of homework for 7–8-year-old second graders as an opportunity to extend learning at home.

It cannot be boring (like writing words in the alphabet order) or unachievable (like writing a song).

It should be short, easy-to-handle for a child with no parent support (parents are very busy), inspiring a kiddo to wonder, ask questions, search for answers. Most importantly, they need be fun ! 

“Fun Worksheets: Homework” are created with an idea that work at home should be manageable and inspiring . They cover many interesting activities that are naturally appealing to children :

• Reflecting on the favorite books they read, and many others!

Let’s face it, as teacher we still must provide children with homework, but we can make it different , inquiry based , totally manageable and, most importantly enjoyable ! 

What’s an idea behind monthly worksheets for fun?

So, here is an idea. 

What if the homework worksheets revolve around one specific theme every month ? In September, it’s back-to-school; October is centered around Halloween and pumpkins; October fun worksheets are related to Thanksgiving and pies; finally, December worksheets are based on reading favorite books, writing stories and drawing. 

Let’s look at the month of September .

It’s a busy time for a teacher. For kids, it’s the time to talk about themselves, share their expectations for the coming school year, and enjoy “visit-the-farm” season and explore beautiful nature. For teachers, it’s the opportunity to get to know students, do some interest inventory and, perhaps, conduct a baseline writing assessment to plan for further writing instruction. 

Guess what?! Would it be cool if all this were possible just by using greatly designed homework worksheets? 

Let’s say there four weeks you have in September (probably fewer if you start school after the Labor Day). I’m still giving homework only four days a week (on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Wednesdays, no homework on Fridays and over the weekend).

What it means, on Friday morning I collect whatever homework I assigned and assess it the way I choose: “Great Job!” stamps, stars, and checkmarks (nothing serious) with some general comments for a child. 

I do it for every week of the month. My goal is to have kids busy , engaged in something interesting , practicing some writing and writing, being inspired to learn independently and spend time outside. 

Let me show you how you can do it.

The first week, these worksheets for fun, are focused on students and baseline writing. 

• Day 1: Ask the kids to tell you all about themselves . Not only is it fun, but you can also keep it in your folder as an interest inventory file!  
• Day 2: Ask students to share their expectations for this school year ! You also can keep it as a file for Domain 4 end of the year artifact.
• Day 3: Learning interesting new words are important. Let’s dedicate one day of the week to learning a new word ! Done! 
• Day 4: What about baseline writing assessment ? Ask the kids to tell you where they went over the summer break. This writing sample will serve as a perfect initial writing assessment and will give you the sense of where you kids are in writing. Keep it in your file, too! 

Here is week 2! 

• Day 1: Let’s kick off with the short read about the monster who didn’t clean after himself! Kids do fun activities and learn words.
• Day 2: Since it’s September, the weather is probably beautiful! How about a farm? Kids create a list of things they can see on the farm and describe the activities they can do there! 
• Day 3: It’s the time to learn a new word ! This week’s word is “observe!”
• Day 4: Send the kids outside to collect a rock . Ask them to study it. They draw the rock and describe it. You can extent this activity by offering students to find books about rocks and bring them to class or learn something new independently! 

Not to forget, every week should finish with some reflection . Absolutely. As a teacher you can also provide comments on the reflection sheet! 

During the month of September, students:

• learn 4 new vocabulary words (responsibility, observe, charming, edible),
• create lists,
• read and write,
• observe and describe,
• create a map of the farm,
• learn about mushrooms and relate them to shapes.

In case you already have your game plan for this year’s homework, there are other things you can do with these fun activities. Worksheets for fun can be used as:

• “I’m done” work for early finishers
• One of the stations during ELA time
• Differentiation material for those kiddos who love to explore and do things independently

And do not worry, you do not need a colored printer. All the worksheets are black and white, and direction are straightforward.

Fun homework ideas for the whole year

One of the things that keeps homework from getting stale is to have a variety of activities and approaches. This does three things:

• It keeps students from getting bored with a fill-in-the-blank worksheet every single day
• It provides options for students to draw in different skills and learning styles
• It allows you to practice the same skill in multiple ways. 

Here are some creative ideas to put into the mix. 

Homework bingo

At the beginning of the week give students a bingo card with different activities related to your focus on a particular subject. For example, a phonics bingo card might include activities like: make a list of at least 10 words with the long e sound, sort the list of words into groups based on how the long e sound is spelled, write sentences using 5 long e words, draw pictures of 5 of our long e words and label them, look around your house for long e words (books, labels, sign, clothing, etc.). Instruct students they need to do five activities this week. If a word list, a game, or other resource is useful for completing the activity, you can attach it to the bingo card. You can even use the same card for more than a week. Let students know if they can repeat any activities or have to do all new ones in week 2.

Cootie catchers

Do you remember these folded paper playground games? You might have called them fortune tellers or chatterboxes. Kids still love them, and they are a great way to practice phonics or math. Cootie catchers can be a two-person activity (students can practice with a friend or somebody in their home), but they can also be used individually. 

Make a poster

Have students make a poster about a specific topic or something they learned. For example, students could make a poster illustrating with examples the different ways to spell the oo sound. Hang the posters in the classroom. 

Math card games

Card games can be a fun way to practice math. I’ve used math card games to build math fluency, practice adding on, and come up with different ways to get to the same number, among other things. You can find some step-by-step math card games here. If students don’t have playing cards at home, you can print out number cards to work with. 

Phonics card games

When it comes to card games, math might come to mind first because playing cards have numbers, but you can print word cards for any word list you are using for students to use for phonics card games. You can have students sort the word cards based on certain criteria. Or they can play classic games like Go Fish or Concentration. Some games, like Go Fish, only work with another player, but some like concentration or sorting games can work for individuals. 

I use task cards in lots of ways. I put math task cards in my math station, use them as a morning warm-up, have them available for early finishers — and I use them for homework. Send a stack of them home at the beginning of the week and have students complete them all by the end of the week. 

Mix it up worksheets

I mentioned at the beginning that creative activities saved students from the boredom of worksheets, so I wanted to be clear. I’m not anti-worksheet. Worksheets can make home practice easy on teachers, students, and parents. The key, I think, is to have a variety of options when it comes to worksheets, so students are not doing the same thing day after day. Maybe one worksheet has them fill in the blanks, but another has them unscramble words or match words to a picture or cut and sort. There are so many homework ideas in worksheets alone.

School Closings And Distance Learning?

Best homeschool advice?

First, don’t “do” school at home. Do not try to bring school home. Whether you're new to homeschooling, practicing a self quarentine, or feeling the isolation, yes, kids can learn at home; yet the schedule is going to be different.

It can be hard to bring school into the home. It’s not the same as school where all the children are the same ages.

You have several ages at home. Schools do not teach several ages at a time. 

Little ones need more hands on help. Older children need quiet time and the computer. There are no assistants paid to help with the little things.

You and your family will have to cover for all these things.

Enjoy these ideas:

• Get a homeschool planner or make your own. It’s really YOUR schedule that will be the backbone of whatever the children can do.
• Spiff up a room to make space for a home office .
• Well, the computer, too. Unless you have more than one computer or tablet , you may have to designate time for each child to finish his work. Put this on the planner.
• If you are following a teacher or tutor’s curriculum, you’ll have all you can do to help your children get those assignments completed and returned to the teacher or school.
• Have everyone help with chores the best that they can. You can teach them how to sort the laundry or how to clean this and that. Once they’ve learned, they’ll have new skills and you’ll have new helpers.
• Learn or practice music . Find drawing ideas and learn to draw or paint pictures
• Make mini-goals: finish your math and you can color. 
• Check your honey-do lists to see if there are jobs around the house that you and the children can do if there is extra time. God bless real spring cleaning!
• Put together a family photo album , at least digitally so the file is ready when you are. See if Walgreens is having a sale on their photo albums and photo books.
• Have a time when you gather in a different room. Make an adventure in the east room, snuggle up and read in another room, have lunch on the porch or deck.
• Write letters to family and friends or make cards: Easter, Fourth of July, Christmas, birthdays.
• Find childrens crafts and paper crafts for kids. Plan ahead to see if you have enough supplies on hand.
• Learn to bake bread and make a care package.
• Make and enjoy family meals together.
• Skype or HangOut for a video chat with Grandma and Grandpa or family and friends. 
• Get out some family games . Find all the Lego sets or all the Knex sets. Make space and time to finish the big projects.
• God bless sidewalk chalk! Everyone in the family can choose a square in the sidewalk or back patio. Make a frame and color away!
• Cook lunch or dinner on the grill on the back yard patio. 
• Take lunch out to the back yard for a picnic .

First, let's discuss printable homeschool worksheets .

Making the home school day productive and/or fun can be a challenge! Sometimes it is good to have busy work and sometimes it is fun to have printable worksheets to re-cap lessons with more practice. 

You know what it is like to wonder how to keep a bright toddler busy and you also know what it is like to have a student lagging with the Math facts.

These worksheets help each child at his own speed.

Sometimes the homeschool curriculum we choose doesn't make sense or leaves gaps. Other times the children copy their facts wrong or simply make up their own. You've got a better chance if the right spelling or equation is in front of them as they work.

You can use these printable homeschool worksheets to supplement any curriculum when you need extra practice exercises, or simply needed a break!

Neat Example:  The main history materials here, so far, is our super useful history timeline. This  history timeline page  has a great explanation for using interactive annotations.

It is wonderful for being able to add your own names and dates. You can print yours on card stock. We have and have been able to keep the same timeline for many years.

Our printable math worksheets are some of the most popular on our site. They offer space for practice, usually three times each.

You can print addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division worksheets that have three spaces after each equation for your kids to copy the equations for all four math operations.

The printable multiplication tables supplement your math lessons with plenty of practice using the multiplication chart.  Also, all four operations are on video flash cards. Oh, how I wish I'd had these years ago!

You will also find Phonics Videos so you and your kids can see and say the sounds of the letters of the alphabet while they practice saying them. If they are writing them it is good to say the sound at the same time for better retention.

Get lists of phonics words on worksheets that use the first sounds, or short vowel sounds, and offer space for your students to copy the correct spelling of words, again, three times each.

Each download is one to several pages long, for example: several pages for -ch, for -er, for -th, etc.

4. Homeschool Worksheets For Homeschool Notebooking

Homeschool notebooking is fun. It's simple, too.

Just grab a notebook and write or draw what you see or what you are studying. Remember that Mom can keep her own notebook, too.

There are years that I have done this and, oh, how I wish I'd kept a notebook for each grade.

If you're using a binder for your notebooks, you can expand your pages or re-do them. Our free worksheets make great notebooking pages and give your students the basics whether you're using a home school curriculum or not.

What do you use for tricky subjects like Math and Phonics? You can use our worksheets.

The easiest homeschool notebooking ideas are for such things as lend themselves to both pictures and writing.

4.A. Teach History Using A Timeline

History notebooks are the most fun for our family. Add a  printable timeline  and some maps for geography and your children can actually write and depict their own version of history (your own version of history based on reality at this point in their education).

Studying the Bible, learning the language arts - especially composition, and science are fun to make great notebooks. Truly, the Bible can start your history and then history can be the backbone of your curriculum.

Looking back through our years I wish that I'd treated our children's school work like building a scrap book - a bit of a narrated photo albums interspersed with their best homeschool worksheets.

Truly, I didn't have a sense of history until I started teaching our children their history using a timeline.

4.B. Notebooking Worksheets

Use all our PrintNPractice Worksheets as notebooking pages to practice many of the regular school subjects.

Notebooking is easy with worksheets when you need to repeat lessons or when you're stumped for good ideas.

5. Worksheets For Homeschool Grandmothers and Grandfathers

In the right situations grandparents can homeschool their grandchildren.

I do. Everytime one of our grandchildren has a question that I answer, I have taught him or her at home. Easy!

Be encouraged! There are so many more resources today than ever before.

My math favorite advice for grandparents teaching math would be to get the Saxon , Shormann , and Teaching Textbooks complete sets.

They all have DVDs or CDs to help you teach homeschool math or to teach the children directly. They all have the text book, some way for the student to write the answers they figure, and teacher solutions manuals (not mere answer keys). There is no feedback or tracking with Saxon Math and Dr. Shormann's CDs. 

Homeschool language arts is easier when the program encompasses everything from phonics, writing, grammar, spelling and more. See this Orton based program  and our homeschool phonics printables  to teach your grandchildren how to read the best way, no look-say here.

I've included excellent recommendations for you throughout this site. Everything is something that I have used and think will be useful to you, or that a dear friend has used and that I wish I had used.

Be encouraged to use the search bar at the top right of most pages. Otherwise use our contact form . I love to hear from our visitors. That's how I knew to create certain resources like our printable phonics flashcards . :-)

6. Wondering How To Homeschool?

6.a. find strength in joining homeschool groups.

You'll find a great deal of help in both 

• Online homeschool groups and
• At least one local homeschool group.

Different parents and grandparents will be at different levels and can tell you where their favorite homeschool worksheets, books, and programs are.

If you're new to homeschooling, they can offer you many short cuts and curriculum ideas - even personal  homeschool curriulum reviews .

Personally, I like online homeschool forums where the information can grow, yet stays in a relatively organized manner.

Homeschool Facebook groups are handy for quick questions and immediate help, especially local groups.

6.B. Research Books About Homeschooling

No need to reinvent the wheel. There are many pioneers before you. Read what they have to say as you plot your course through homeschool curriculum and homeschool books.

Do your research. By learning about different curricula, books, and styles you'll have an easier time deciding what you want to add to your schedule and what you want to leave out of the picture.

6.C. Gain The Support Of Family And Friends

Sometimes your best support is right there in front of you.

First, be sure you as husband and wife agree on the main issues. 

• Why you're homeschooling.
• Which approach you'll take.
• How long you expect to homeschool.
• Will you use online resources and courses?
• Plan B alternatives: Grandparents, tutors, videos.
• Prioritize school work, house work, and yard work.

If you note that certain family and friends are not in support of your decisions, stay united and find ways to re-focus when times get hard. Learn to pull away.

Thankfully, there are ways of making homework less boring and that little bit more fun for your child. Whether they need to practice spellings, learn their times tables or revise for an important exam, our top fun homework ideas will help you to magically take the ‘work’ out of homework.

KS2 Maths Games and Activities Pack

1. Work together

Adults often work best in the company of others, and the same can be said of kids, so why not sit with your child while they’re studying and get on with some of your own work or life admin?

Whether you’re returning emails, doing your online banking or organising the next primary school PTA fundraiser, creating a shared workspace and modelling focused work is a great way to spend quality time together while they complete their homework. Win-win!

Quick win : Whilst your child is tackling their fractions homework, you could sit down with them and take a look through your finances or even test yourself on the work that your child will be doing in their SATs .

2. Use rewards and incentives

Rewards and incentives are great when it comes to getting your children to follow your household rules and routines, and homework is no different. Things like stickers or the promise of time on their iPad or games console for slightly older children can all work wonders in getting them to do their homework without a battle.

Quick win: For every few questions they answer they could get a minute of screen time!

3. Sort them a snack

Let’s face it: A hungry child is an unfocused, unmotivated and unhappy child.

Most children come out of school ravenous, so let them nibble on a nutritious after-school snack while they get on with homework; things like popcorn, apple slices, grapes, flapjacks, or crackers and cheese are all great snack options.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, Netmums has a list of healthy after-school snack ideas and recipes to try.

Quick win: One of the best brain foods for kids is a nice and crispy apple! So when your child is craving something sweet just cut up an apple and let them munch away.

4. Make it visual

Help to eliminate the late night ‘Oh, I forgot to do that’, and create a weekly homework chart so your child can see what they have to do each day and check off each homework ‘To Do’ as it’s been completed.

Again, Pinterest has some great free printables to help keep kids organised. Get them involved by letting them colour it, or decorate it with their favourite stickers, and pin it up somewhere at their height, where they will see it easily every day as a reminder. Some exciting new stationery and colourful pens might help too.

Quick win: An easy way to make homework fun is to grab a piece of paper and get your child to draw out and decorate a ‘homework chart’ consisting of 5 days. Stick it on the fridge and add a sticker to each day after they’ve done their homework, when they’ve collected 5 stickers they get a treat!

5. Try different learning apps

If your child prefers to be online, there are some great online apps around that children will have fun using, yet encourage learning too. Here are our favourite free maths websites for example. Speak to your child’s teacher too and see which apps the children use in school so you can support what they’re doing at home.

6. Set up a homework play date

Holding a homework playdate where your child can invite one of their best school buddies over to do homework together can be a great way for them to learn and make sure the work gets done, especially slightly older primary children.

Plus, it’s likely that their parents will be delighted!

Younger children may need a bit more support and guidance but can still gain a lot from the experience of learning together with a friend – think of this as a mini-educational play date for them – with a special tea afterwards of course!

Quick win: Let your child and their friend play for a while, and then get them to work through their homework with the incentive of a yummy ‘tea party’ when they’ve completed all of their homework.

7. Go outside

If the weather allows, create a comfortable outside study space and allow your child to do their homework outdoors.

The fresh air can help kids with their concentration if they’ve been stuck in a classroom all day, and studies also show that being outside, closer to nature, can increase productivity. The reward of a quick game of Frisbee or a kick-around of a football between tasks will help them stay motivated too.

8. Turn it into a game

Who said home learning had to be boring? If children enjoy what they’re learning, they’re more likely to remember what they’re being taught, so turn their learning into a fun game. Using sweets like Smarties to help with maths and number work can turn the experience from a chore into a treat. If they get the right answer, they get to eat some!

Another trick that you can use when your child is learning spellings is to write them in foam or in magnetic letters. It sounds simple, but  we can guarantee that it will make homework a lot more fun for your child.

9. Let them play teacher

Make another fun homework game by creating your own mini-classroom and letting your child step into the role of teacher.

Have your child explain a concept to you as a teacher, as you, or their sibling, plays the role of the student. This game works particularly well with subjects that require theory, like Science for example, as it will improve their understanding of the concept and build logic and reasoning skills.

Quick win: Make homework fun by getting your child to choose their favourite teddys and toys and setting them up in their own mini classroom. Start off with registration, ‘mummy’ ‘present’, ‘mr teddy’ ‘here’ etc. You’ll soon notice that your child is growing in confidence regardless of the topic as children love playing teacher!

10. Use a timer

Some children may have difficulty working for prolonged periods of time without a break, so using a timer can be great for getting them to complete homework without the whining. For example, if your child is given 20 maths problems for homework, you can say “Complete the first 10 questions then we’ll take a 5-minute break, then complete the next 10 questions”.

Many children will need a mental break and will work more effectively when given the opportunity to take one. At the end of the task, they get to pick an activity of their choice. If your child gets easily distracted, a timer game can work well to keep them focused on the task in hand.

Quick win: Put the timer on your phone so that your child can see the countdown whilst they’re working.

11. Create a special homework space

A special study space can make homework more fun and help motivate your child to get it done! Choose a space in your house that’s least likely to distract your child, and create a simple, organised, and kid-friendly homework HQ.

You could hang up some of their artwork above the desk, and have all their school essentials nearby so everything is close to hand.

Quick win: Make sure that they aren’t surrounded by things that will distract them. Televisions and iPads are a no go at homework time!

12. Remember to be positive

Remember to always be upbeat and positive about school and the importance of their homework. Give your child lots of praise and encouragement about how well they’re doing to help them stay motivated and on track.

13. Get help if you need it

Homework can be frustrating if your child doesn’t understand the material or gets bored easily. If your child is struggling, get them some expert help!

Learning to read can be a blast!

Reading in the classroom can be so much fun. We all work hard to plan robust literacy instruction, but who said we couldn’t have a little fun with it? Check out these engaging and enriching reading activities, ranging from preschool to upper elementary and beyond. Reading Activities for Preschoolers

1. sing songs and nursery rhymes.

Rhyming is part of phonological awareness, which is one of the essential building blocks of early literacy . Nursery rhymes are entertaining to sing and learn, while they encourage students to listen closely to the sounds in words. English-language learners will also benefit from the extra vocabulary practice and repetition.

Reading Activities for First Graders

13. find the fish.

This may be our favorite game for its versatility and ease of prep. Check out these suggestions from Susan Jones (the second half of the video focuses on literacy) for how to reinforce important literacy skills. Students search for a hidden fish behind words, letters, or picture cards. Great for practicing sight words, letter identification or sounds, decoding skills, and phoneme isolation.

14. Picture the Character

This comprehension activity is both fun and informative for first graders. Encouraging readers to use simple pictures and words to think about a character from a beloved book is a great way to boost comprehension skills. It’s always a good idea to get them started early thinking critically about books!

15. Magic E wand

Learning the magic E is a very important first-grade reading skill and takes some practice. We love this fun activity to reinforce the idea that the “e” at the end of a one-syllable word changes the vowel to its long sound. Students will love to use “magic” to change these sounds back and forth.

16. Watch a phonics music video

These videos from a talented husband-and-wife duo will make tricky phonics and spelling rules especially memorable. Students will request these super-catchy and fun tunes over and over again, and you might just find yourself singing along too.

17. Echo reading

As students become more proficient in decoding, it’s also important to focus on their fluency skills. Echo reading, or repeating what someone else has read, is an effective strategy to increase fluency. Decodable texts help students put the pieces together and apply what they are learning. There are so many great resources out there these days , making it a highly effective activity you can differentiate for any student.

Reading Activities for Second Graders

19. reader’s theater.

If you’re looking for a fluency-boosting activity students will love, reader’s theater is a fabulous choice. With many repeated readings and plenty of opportunities for working on expression, reading a script is a high-value activity that will engage just about any reader. It can also be adapted based on the reading level and specific needs of your students.

20. Learn the six syllable types

Understanding the six different types of syllables is an important part of explicit phonics instruction and helps readers decode unknown words. By the end of second grade, students should be familiar with all six. These types of syllable sorts are fun, effective ways to review and informally assess whether students are grasping the concept.

23. Fact or opinion football

Read statements and decide if they are facts or opinions. Get it right and score a field goal!

24. Popper syllable division

Kids just can’t get enough of these poppers and they add so much value in the classroom. Practice syllable division, another important decoding and spelling skill, by pushing down one popper for each syllable you hear in the word. Then, write the word syllable by syllable.

Reading Activities for Third Graders and Up

Book trailers are one of our all-time favorite reading activities for older students. With instant buy-in and engagement, this fun assignment can also serve as a valuable tool for assessing comprehension.

Reading activities for parents & children, activities to try after reading, other educational activities to help kids learn.

Learning to read is a huge milestone in a child’s life. We all know how important a love of reading is for future learning. When children love to read, they can learn anything. 

Make sure your children keep the joy of reading alive by using fun reading activities along with traditional reading strategies .

These fun daily moments can improve reading skills and help reluctant readers find joy in the written word. We’ll be covering reading activities by grade level both for the classroom and at home, as well as some activities to improve reading comprehension after your students are reading independently. 

Though many children begin the basics of reading at home, most solidify their skills and become accomplished readers in the classroom. These activities keep early readers engaged and improving while helping reluctant readers master the basics. Here are our favorite ways to keep reading fun!

1. Find the secret word

Great for: Kindergarten to 2nd grade

Turn a reading lesson into a scavenger hunt! Give each student or pair of students a piece of text, then speak the first secret word. Once they find it, have them circle it in a specific color, or circle and number, then report back to you for word #2. 

Keep this word search up for as long as you like — we recommend choosing about 8 to 10 words for students to find. It’s one part competition, one part scavenger hunt! Choose a prize for each team to receive when they complete the activity. Or celebrate everyone reaching the end with a classroom dance party! It’s a great way to keep your kids moving and learning.

2. Read aloud as a class

Great for: All grades

Kids are never too old to hear a story read aloud. Reading aloud as a class is a great way to keep kids engrossed in a story. Since you are most familiar with the text, you can keep the flow going during the dramatic moments. Then hand it off to your students to take their turns.

Want to add a new element to your classroom read-aloud? Pass around a ball or stuffed animal to indicate the next reader. It’s a variation of popcorn reading to help minimize reading anxiety, and it gives kids the power to pass it on after spending a short time reading. 

3. Partner reading

Great for: 1st to 3rd grade

Sometimes trying to get the whole class to read together is just too much. To encourage more reading time, pair up your students for partner reading. 

During partner reading, each child will get more time to practice their skills. And being corrected privately by one friend may be better for a struggling reader’s confidence. Try to pair a confident but patient reader with those who need some extra help and watch them both learn to succeed.

4. Find the synonym

Great for: 2nd to 5th grade

Once your readers are feeling more confident, take our scavenger hunt game mentioned above and add a new twist. 

Instead of searching for the exact spoken words on your list, give students the challenge to find the word’s synonym in the text. It’s a great way to keep the game challenging for older students.

5. Word searches

For younger students, a word search is a challenging way to encourage early reading. You can do this much like our scavenger hunt-style games, but instead of saying the words aloud, provide a list. 

They can search for one word at a time, with you providing the next word to the team once the first is found. Or provide a full list from the beginning and let them work individually. Add in some color matching (marking the word in the same color as printed on the list) to keep this game fun and engaging.

6. Keyword bingo

Looking for a calmer alternative to the secret word game? Have each child work individually in a game of reading bingo. Choose a grade-level text and compile a list of words found in the passage. 

Read each word aloud, giving about 15 seconds before moving on to the next. It’s a race against your clock to find the words, or they can try to remember them while looking for the others. When they find the words, they can mark them out. Once the list is done, allow 20 more seconds to wrap up any remaining words, then pencils down and count. Whoever finds the most words, wins!

7. Decoding games

Decoding games focus on letter sounds and phonemic awareness. A favorite game for pre-readers is to say a letter and have students find an object that starts with that letter. As they bring the object back, reinforce the sound that letter makes.

Other decoding games can focus on the mechanics of reading — such as reading a word or sentence from left to right. This is a great time to utilize finger puppets, following along with a finger as you sound the words out together.

8. Thumbs up, thumbs down

Great for: Kindergarten to 5th grade

Thumbs up, thumbs down (or the higher energy variation — stand up, sit down) is a great game to keep your students engaged. 

Check reading comprehension when you ask students to give a thumbs up if a statement about a recently read story is true, or a thumbs down if it’s false. Help them grasp grammar concepts by having them stand up when you say an adjective word or sit down if you say a noun. 

It’s a fun way to keep their bodies and brains working. 

9. Discover the missing letter

When you’re teaching letter sounds, it’s fun to get creative. In this game, you’ll call your students to the front of the class by their names — minus the first letter. For example, Stacy becomes tacy and Roland becomes oland. Let the kids guess who you’re calling up, then have them decode the missing letter. 

You can do the same thing for objects, or drop middle letters for older children. Just be sure to prepare your words ahead of time to avoid any slip-ups!  

10. Guided reading ball game

Great for: 2nd to 7th grade

Grab a few beach balls from your local dollar store and get your classroom moving. Take a sharpie and write a discussion prompt on each colorful section of the ball. What is the setting? Who is the main character? What happened after…? 

Toss or roll the balls around. Students answer whichever question their thumb lands on when the ball heads their way. This is an exciting way to mix things up, practice reading comprehension and get kids thinking outside of their seats.

Not all reading happens in the classroom! Parents can play an active role in helping their children learn to read. Here are a few activities to try with your kids.

1. Reading together

Great for: All grades and ages

There’s something special about listening to a book being read out loud. It can capture your attention in a unique way. Whether your child is a baby or fully grown, it’s always a good time to read together.

Take turns reading chapters from a favorite story, or just read to your child. Enjoying good stories is a huge motivator in learning to read.  

2. Silly voices reading

Great for: Kindergarten to 4th grade

Kids love to laugh and joke, so play into this with a crazy story and silly voices. Get really high-pitched, speed it up like a chipmunk, and then pitch your voice low. 

Your kids will love seeing these stories come to life with your words, and you’ll all share a good laugh. To get them involved in the fun, ask them to do their own silly voice!

3. Dialogic reading

The word dialogic means to have a dialogue, and that’s exactly what this activity is designed to do. Instead of reading to your child while they passively listen, invite them into the story. Ask them what they think may happen next, or at the close of the book invite them to create a completely different ending. This is a great way to stretch your little storyteller’s imagination.

4. Reading outside

Kids thrive outdoors. They can run, climb, and dig in the dirt. Outside is also a great place to practice reading and letter writing. Invite your child to help you create words in a sandbox or take a stick and dig a letter into the dirt. 

Older kids can simply take their reading outside. It’s amazing how refreshing a change of setting can be. 

5. What word starts with…

Great for: Kindergarten to 1st grade

Letter sounds are an essential early reading tool. With this game, ask your child to think of words that start with “B” (or any other letter).

 Give an example, like b-b-butterfly, then think of more “B” words together. Choose your child’s favorite things to keep the game fun and exciting. Early readers especially love to talk about the letters in their names.

6. Try nonfiction

Great for: All ages

You never know what a child may love to read. Though many kids enjoy a good princess or dragon story, others will prefer non-fiction books. 

If your attempts at fiction are met with indifference, try a book about their favorite animal (sharks, dinosaurs, or lemurs are popular here), learn about space or strange weather events. Whatever your child is into, and whatever their reading level, there’s a book for them.

7. Create a “book nook”

A cozy spot dedicated to reading can add joy to the activity. Load up a corner or top bunk space with comfy pillows and blankets, make sure it has good lighting, and include some sticky notes and a dictionary. All your child needs to bring is their favorite book! Even better, snuggle in together and discover a new favorite with your child.

8. Who’s coming over?

This game can be played in a couple of different ways, and both are great for reading comprehension. First, try giving clues so your child can guess their favorite characters. These favorites can be from books or TV. You can mention physical characteristics, some of their best friends, or things that happen to them. Keep giving clues until they guess correctly.

The second way to play is to invite a favorite character over and then discuss what you’ll need for their visit. A special kind of bed, their favorite foods, or a place for their pet to stay are all things to consider. This is a fun way to create your own story around your child’s favorite characters.

9. Take turns reading

As your child begins to read you can invite them to read to you. Don’t push if they don’t want to, but as their confidence builds they’ll be excited to share their new skill with you. 

This may look like you both taking turns reading a new chapter book, or they may want to share all the creature descriptions from their favorite new computer game. No matter the topic, do your best to listen intently and congratulate them on their reading skills.  

10. What happens next?

Keep reading fun and active when you step outside the book and asking your child what happens next:

• What do they think will happen?
• What would you like to see happen? 
• What’s something funny that could happen?

Any question that gets them thinking through the story on their own is both fun and helpful for reading comprehension. 

11. Talk about the pictures

Pictures are a great way for kids to follow along with a story. When your child is beginning to read, have them look at the pictures and ask what they think is going on. As they unravel the story, point out the words they are discovering in the text. Or just let them enjoy creating their own unique version of the story based on the pictures. 

12. Try new reading apps and websites

There are some amazing reading apps for both reading instruction and digital reading libraries. If your child enjoys spending time on their tablet, give some of our favorite reading apps a try and watch them learn while they play.

After your child is reading on their own, there’s still plenty to learn. Reading isn’t effective if they’re struggling to understand the words on the page, or how they all fit together to create the story. Here are a few activities for children to practice reading comprehension.

1. Summarize the text

Once a child is done reading a text or section of a book, have them revisit the main ideas by highlighting or taking notes on the text’s biggest themes. Once students identify the main themes, ask them to break them down further and quickly summarize the story.

2. Book reports

Great for: 2nd to 12th grade

Book reports are a classic reading activity. Have the child analyze the book, highlighting the most important themes. Older children can present arguments pertaining to the story, and provide passages to support their theories. 

Keep book reports even more engaging when you invite kids to give a presentation, complete with dress-up and drama. 

3. Review the book

Ask children to rate their most recent reading. They can assign it a number of stars, but then they must also explain why. Was it too scary? Not funny? What were their favorite parts? What would they do differently?

Not only does this help students think critically about what they’ve just read, but it can also help parents and teacher identify what they might like reading next.

4. Extend the story

Great for: Kindergarten to 12th grade

“And they lived happily ever after…”

Maybe so, but what happened next? Ask your child to keep the story going. Where do they go next? Who do they meet? Favorite characters can continue adventuring when your child takes over the story. This is a great writing prompt , or just a fun dinner conversation!

5. How could it have been better?

Everyone has an opinion, so ask your child for theirs. How could this book or story have been better? Would a different ending be more fun? Or maybe they just think the main character should be named after them. 

No matter their critique, listen and discuss. Then encourage them to create their own tale.

How reading activities help kids embrace learning

Reading keeps kids learning for the rest of their lives. When a child can read, they can take more control over their education. And that’s a wonderful thing!

Fun activities are the best way to keep a child interested in the world of books. Learning to read can be a frustrating journey for some. Others may simply find it boring (especially if they’re being made to read about topics they care little about). These activities are designed to get kids moving and thinking beyond the page. Because when reading is fun, learning happens naturally.

When teaching starts to feel like a drag, or the kids are fighting their instruction, revisit this article. Mix in some fun activities and keep the learning going. Getting up, moving around, or enjoying a laugh together can help stimulate everyone’s mind.

Decoding the sky: A definitive solar eclipse guide for kids (adults also welcome)

Look up in the sky: It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's the moon covering the sun.

In just a few days a total solar eclipse will arrive in North America, and people are already pretty excited. But, what's the big deal really? Don't eclipses happen all the time? Well, this one is a bit different − rare even. And it only lasts a few minutes so it's good to be prepared beforehand.

Here's an illustrated guide to help you understand what the April 8 total solar eclipse means, where it will be visible and how you can watch it safely.

What is a total solar eclipse?

Not all eclipses are the same, they can look different, depending where on Earth you are and where the moon's shadow is.

Where can the total solar eclipse be viewed?

On April 8, NASA says, the total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing through Texas around 1:27 p.m. CDT and ending in Maine about 3:35 p.m. EDT. Anywhere along the eclipse path, the longest period of totality will be  4 minutes and 28 seconds , nearly double that of the 2017 solar eclipse.

Not everyone in the world will be able to see it, only people who happen to be in the path of the huge moon shadow.

How to safely view the solar eclipse

You can also create fun ways to view the eclipse without looking directly at the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. During that period called "totality," you can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona. Also the darkness can confuse animals – nocturnal creatures stir, and bird and insects fall silent. The solar eclipse will be the last of its kind that will be visible for people in the U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044, according to  NASA .
