(Editor's note: Robin Madell has been a contributing writer at FlexJobs and Remote.co.)
Launched in 2007, FlexJobs was created specifically to help professionals find remote and flexible jobs. The site's founder, Sara Sutton, explains she was inspired to start FlexJobs because she had been looking for a remote opportunity with a flexible schedule while pregnant and was discouraged by how many bogus job sites there were in this niche.
FlexJobs' staff researches what they identify as the best job listings for professional positions in more than 50 career fields worldwide. Opportunities are part-time , full-time, on a flexible schedule and on an alternative schedule. Positions range from entry-level to executive-level. FlexJobs provides client support for members and a money-back guarantee. Pricing starts at $2.95 for a 14-day trial.
Remote.co , a FlexJobs partner also founded by Sutton, describes itself as a site for "all things remote work." It offers sections for employers to post remote jobs and for job seekers to find those opportunities. The site also includes a remote work blog and common work-from-home questions answered by 146 remote companies and virtual teams.
One of the major job search sites for traditional work, Indeed also has a special section for remote jobs. The site currently lists more than 47,000 remote jobs that are searchable by job type, keywords or company. Indeed also lets users browse companies by industry, search for salaries and upload resumes so that employers can find them.
We Work Remotely
According to the We Work Remotely site, its community has over 4.5 million visitors. The site lists remote jobs in categories including programming, design, customer support, and sales and marketing . It also designates between full-time and contract positions. We Work Remotely also offers a number of resources for remote job seekers including a Remote Leader Playbook, remote work trends and the top 100 remote companies.
ZipRecruiter
While ZipRecruiter is a larger job board that publishes opportunities about traditional jobs as well, it contains a section specifically for remote positions.
Some of the most popular types of remote jobs listed on the site are administrative, part-time and contract work. The site also has contract-to-hire and part-time jobs. Some of the most popular remote job titles found on the site are teacher, graphic designer and bookkeeper.
A free site that's targeted solely toward remote jobs, Jobspresso has over 1,000 openings listed, featuring tech roles in software development, design, user experience, and development and operations, as well as writing, editing and product management.
Jobspresso curates, reviews and adds to its listings daily. According to the Jobspresso website, "100% of our jobs are hand-picked, manually reviewed and expertly curated."
Working Nomads
Working Nomads distinguishes itself from other sites by offering a remote job board that spans positions worldwide. It targets job seekers who want to “work remotely from your home or places around the world.” It offers fully remote positions and partly remote jobs where you might need to spend some time on site for training or team-building purposes.
Listing remote jobs in software development, customer support, marketing, design and other industries, the Remote OK site states that its job board reaches more than 2.6 million remote workers.
Job seekers can search by salary and benefits as well as job title and location. The site also includes an opportunity for remote workers and nomads to sign up to receive global health insurance.
This is a free, standard job board with a category search and a community option to receive newsletters and webinars via email on topics relevant to remote job searchers and workers. It allows you to search for jobs by skill and location or by company.
Though the Remotive site places an emphasis on remote tech opportunities, it posts other types of remote jobs as well. Job hunters can use a “Remotive Accelerator” to unlock over 34,000 additional opportunities.

A Note on “Work From Home” Jobs, Telecommuting, and Remote Work
Let’s take a moment to clear up the difference between work-from-home jobs, telecommuting jobs, and remote work.
- Work-from-home jobs are exactly how they sound — jobs working at home. This term speaks to the assumption that jobs are either done in a traditional office or from your living room, but — for many people — working out of their house is a perfect remote solution.
- Telecommuting jobs typically allow people to work from their home (or elsewhere) for companies or organizations that are still in their immediate area. A job where someone works in an office three days a week, but spends two days working from home is a classic example of telecommuting.
- Remote work is a catch-all term that applies to work that can be done from anywhere in the world. Since working from home jobs and telecommuting jobs are subsets of remote work, we prefer to use remote work to describe any job that doesn’t involve being tied to a specific office or workplace. If you’re working from home, that’s remote work; if you’re working from a coworking space, a coffee shop, or the beach, that’s also remote work, too.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the number of people doing some or all of their work remotely was on the rise even before 2020, so there’s no time like the present to get in on the unique benefits and advantages an online remote job has to offer .

Remote jobs are getting harder to come by.
As of December 2023, remote jobs made up less than 10% of postings advertised on LinkedIn, down from a high of 20.6% in March 2022 — even though close to half of jobseekers prefer remote roles.
The good news for remote jobseekers is that some industries are still hiring for roles that can be done from home, and many come with six-figure salaries.
To examine where remote hiring is happening the most for high-paying jobs, FlexJobs identified the top 10 occupations with the highest number of remote job openings on their site between January and March 2024 that pay more than $100,000.
The top industries offering ample remote work opportunities with six-figure salaries include tech, marketing and project management, per FlexJobs data provided to CNBC Make It .
With that in mind, here are some in-demand, high-paying remote jobs that can earn you a salary of $100,000 or more, according to data from FlexJobs and Payscale:
1. Senior software engineer
Average salary: $126,956
2. Product manager
Average salary: $106,525
3. Senior product designer
Average salary: $128,618
4. Senior product marketing manager
Average salary: $135,558
5. Engineering manager
Average salary: $121,560
6. Senior DevOps engineer
Average salary: $129,515
7. Senior data engineer
Average salary: $128,783
8. Senior project manager
Average salary: $104,496
9. Regional sales director
Average salary: $109,268
10. Senior machine learning engineer
Average salary: $155,722
Some of the fastest-growing remote jobs are in STEM fields (engineering, product design, data science), which have seen steady remote job growth in the past year despite recent layoffs in the tech sector, says Toni Frana, FlexJobs' lead career expert.
"We've seen some pretty dramatic changes over the last year with the introduction and adoption of various AI technologies," she adds. "Organizations across different industries need tech talent that can help them innovate and keep pace with the quick-changing landscape, and hiring remotely helps them expand their applicant pool."
While several of the most in-demand remote jobs are senior-level positions, there are some intermediate and entry-level remote roles companies have been increasingly hiring for in recent months, including account executives, customer service representatives and staff accountants, Frana points out, citing FlexJobs internal data.
If you're looking to land a high-paying remote job, Frana recommends tailoring your search around different keywords (for example: "work from home," "virtual," "telecommute" or "flexible"). Pair these keywords with related job titles or skill sets (for example: "virtual project manager").
You should also consider updating your technical skills . Frana says remote employers are eager to hire candidates who can "quickly adapt" to new technologies, whether it's an AI tool or new data analytics software, and use these tools to work more efficiently. She recommends checking out YouTube tutorials on different tools, or considering an online certificate program.
Frana adds: "Any technical skill you can highlight on your resume will be highly valuable to employers as the remote work landscape continues to evolve."

Not everything listed on these job search sites is legitimate. The usual rules apply -- do your research and watch out for work from home job opportunities that seem suspicious or too good to be true.
If a scam is posted on a reputable job board, it does not mean the job board is not a good one to search. Scams can slip through the cracks almost anywhere.
Use Good Keywords
Using good keywords will help you narrow things down. When searching work at home, type in things like "telecommute," "remote," or "work at home."
You can also narrow your results down further by typing in "freelance writing/writer," "mystery shopping," etc. based on the exact type of job you need, or even filter things by location.
Be Careful About Posting Your Resume Publicly
On the sites that let you post your resume online, be careful and only publish the bare minimum.
I've never actually done this with my resume so I'm not sure how it really works, but I would think it's not a good idea to have your address, phone, or other very personal information floating around for just anyone to access.
Where To Look For Work From Home Job Opportunities
Indeed is like the Google of job search sites. Their data comes from several different sources and they have great options for sorting and searching jobs.
As of now, Indeed is my favorite place to look for job leads. You should be sure to take advantage of their easy filtering options as well. It makes it super simple to narrow your results down to just the work at home jobs.
You can also read employee reviews for different companies on Indeed. This makes it very easy to decide if the job you're interested in is worth your time.
If you are in a country outside the US and you need to find a remote job, check out these instructions for finding worldwide work at home in Indeed.

FlexJobs is a"pay to access" site, but I've always thought it's worth the $14.95 monthly fee, especially considering you can usually sign up for less than this. There is almost always a deal going on for membership.
I signed up a few years ago. I was very impressed with not only the quality of leads (updated five days a week), but also the organization of the site and the fact everything really is scam-free.
Also, FlexJobs focuses on work at home and flexible jobs, so you're not browsing through as many things that aren't a fit.
If you only want to try it for one month, you can set things up in your account settings so your membership does not auto-renew once your first month runs out.
Ad Hunt'rwas formerly known as "All of Craigs". It's basically a search tool to help you search all the Craigslist results across multiple cities.
This simplifies things because you don't have to go to each specific city and type in your keywords. This one has been a lifesaver for me because you can often find great work at home job postings on Craigslist.
If you do decide to use Ad Hunt'r to search for work at home across Craigslist, be sure to check out these tips for avoiding Craigslist scams .

Looking specifically for work at home tech jobs? Dice is a job board geared specifically toward tech jobs. Many of these are remote.
To find specifically remote jobs on Dice, you can type "work at home" in the search box OR take advantage of their filtering options which allow you to sort just work at home tech jobs.
Go here to check out Dice.
Zip Recruiter
This is another very popular jobs board you may have heard of. I do search here occasionally and find good remote leads.
Zip Recruiter also has job seeker reviews for different companies to help you decide whether or not a company is worth applying with. This is something that I'm so glad many job boards are beginning to introduce!
Go here to check out Zip Recruiter.
Glassdoor is a fantastic site for search jobs, including work from home jobs, but my favorite feature with them are the worker reviews! You can browse through the reviews on different companies and find out those little details you need in order to determine if applying would be worth it.
Additionally, Glassdoor allows employees for different companies to anonymously post their salary information as well as a rundown of how the interview/application process goes. This is so helpful!
If you don't have a Glassdoor account, I'd highly recommend it if you're serious about finding a work at home job (or any type of job).
Go here to check out Glassdoor.
Blogs Sharing Work at Home Job Leads
In addition to those job search boards, I also recommend finding leads on some popular, reputable work at home blogs. Here are some of my favorites (as well as my own).
Real Ways to Earn Job Board
We add leads here 4-5 days per week and are extremely careful about what is added.
We try very hard to make sure I include leads that are open to, and will appeal to, many people.
The Work at Home Woman
Holly at The Work at Home Woman blog has a "Now Hiring" board with new leads added many days per week. Legit, reputable companies are featured.
Good luck to you!
Requesting flexible working now a legal right for all workers from first day in job
Flexible working is a broad term but encompasses a different style of work from the conventional 9-5 in the office, and could include adaptations to where someone works, to save them from commuting, for example.
News reporter @Reemul_B
Saturday 6 April 2024 11:07, UK
Employees across the country have today been granted the legal right to request flexible working from the day they enter a new job.
Previously, the right was only applicable if someone had worked for their employer for 26 weeks or more.
The Flexible Working (Amendment) Regulations 2023 gained Royal Assent in July as Kevin Hollinrake, the business and trade minister, backed the measure for "a happier workforce [which] means increased productivity".
The term and its implementation first came into effect under Tony Blair's government in the early 2000s where parents of children under six and carers of those under 18 could ask for a flexi working arrangement.
More legislation was introduced, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, flexible working accelerated in terms of "understanding" and the "demand for it", Peter Cheese, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said.
Mr Cheese said the new law "stands to benefit millions of people, helping them to balance their work and life commitments and give them more say and more opportunity in where and how they work".

He said flexibility around time, scheduling and where someone worked could be "transformative" especially for those with health conditions, caring responsibilities or other life choices they wished to make.
He added: "With an ageing population and rising levels of economically inactive people due to ill health, flexible working is more important than ever, and has been shown to support better wellbeing, making it good for individuals as well as organisations."
As from 6 April, employers have a duty to consult with workers before they can refuse a flexible working request.
Coodes Solicitors listed some reasons why a demand could be rejected, including the arrangement costing the business too much, a negative effect on performance and the inability for the company to hire more team members.
The conciliation service Acas published a new statutory Code of Practice on requests for flexible working alongside guidance, which its chief executive Susan Clews said would "help employers and employees avoid any pitfalls".
Ms Clews said: "There are many types of flexible working such as part-time working, flexitime, job sharing, staggered hours, hybrid and homeworking. The starting position for businesses should be to consider what may be possible."
A study of 4,000 workers by campaign group Timewise found that half would consider asking for a flexible pattern of work using the day one right to request in a new job.

Research by campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed found that mothers are twice as likely than fathers to ask for flexible working after parental leave.
Joeli Brearley, chief executive of the group, said: "Mothers are more likely to shoulder the lion's share of the unpaid labour required to care for children and manage a household.
"As a result, they are more likely to need flexible working. Just three in 10 job adverts offer flexibility, limiting the progression opportunities and earning potential of mothers."

Former Tampines Regional Library turned into Mindef ‘work-near-home’ facility
SINGAPORE –The former Tampines Regional Library in Tampines Avenue 7 has been transformed into a satellite office facility as part of the Ministry of Defence’s (Mindef) “work-near-home” scheme.
It is now among four such facilities that provide secure shared working spaces for employees as part of Mindef’s efforts to keep pace with flexible working arrangements. Mindef and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) employees can access the necessary networks and systems at these facilities, which they are otherwise unable to at home due to the security-related nature of their work.
The work-near-home scheme, called M-Works, started with a trial at the former Spring Singapore building in Bukit Merah and Chong Pang Camp in Yishun in April 2021.
The scheme has since been expanded to include sites at the Defence Technology Tower B in Depot Road in Telok Blangah in July 2022, as well as the old Tampines Regional Library in October 2023.
All four facilities can hold up to a combined 400 people. Across all four sites, the average monthly usage rate is around 75 per cent, Mindef told The Straits Times.
It added that the most popular facility is the one at Defence Technology Tower B, which sees an average monthly usage rate of between 80 per cent and 90 per cent.
Mindef said the initiative allows employees who enjoy working near home to reduce the time they spend commuting to the office, and provides hot-desking spaces for staff looking for a conducive space to work after attending meetings in nearby locations.
The former Tampines Regional Library gives employees an option to work in the east, on top of the other work-near-home spots in central and northern Singapore.
It was the first regional library in the country when it opened in 1994, at twice the size of a typical branch library.
With a floor area of around 6,000 sq m, the equivalent of over eight-tenths of a football field, it operated until June 2017. The library shifted to its current 10,900 sq m location at Our Tampines Hub in August 2017.
Responding to ST’s queries, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said the former library was returned to the state in January 2018. Several government agencies studied and explored potential uses for the site and it was allocated to Mindef in October 2021.
Mindef said it signed a 10-year lease that began in 2022 and will end in 2032.
Refurbishment of the facility – including the transformation of open areas into offices, collaborative spaces and meeting rooms – began in 2022, to prepare for its opening in October 2023.
The Tampines satellite office, which can seat about 100 people, has amenities such as individual workstations, quiet pods designed for calls, four-seat work booths, enclosed discussion rooms, each with a capacity of four to six people, enclosed meeting rooms that can fit groups of 10 to 20 each, and various large tables for group discussions.
The workspace is configurable due to the use of collapsible walls between selected meeting and discussion rooms, as well as moveable furniture. As such, the facility is commonly used to conduct large training sessions and town halls.
Mindef and SAF employees can book a seat or room for anywhere between half an hour and an entire day via a dedicated website.
Among them is Ms Kelly Sim, an assistant director at Mindef’s corporate finance management branch. The 37-year-old appreciates the convenience, as her home is within a 15-minute walk from the facility.
As the commute to her office at the former Spring Singapore Building takes more than an hour via public transport, she prefers working from the Tampines facility at least once or twice weekly.
This lets her spend more time with her children, aged three and nine, after work, as she can pick them up from her parents’ home in Tampines at about 5pm, two or three hours earlier than the days she works from the office.
Ms Sim noted that it is “quite easy” to book a seat at the facility, and she usually does so minutes before she walks from her home to the site. But she added that she would need to book discussion rooms several days in advance and meeting rooms two weeks ahead.
Lieutenant-Colonel Adam Lim, deputy director of people operations at Mindef, said: “The start of the circuit-breaker (lockdown) measures during the Covid-19 pandemic has seen a shift towards flexi-work arrangements for employees, especially for those in administrative jobs. While work-from-home became an option, we felt the need to better support our employees where they can work at satellite office locations closer to their home.”
He added: “This work-near-home arrangement can help improve work productivity and reduce commuting time, while ensuring that workplace relations and team collaboration are not compromised with such flexi-work practices.”
For the other satellite offices, Mindef’s lease at the former Spring Singapore Building will end in March 2027. Chong Pang Camp and Defence Technology Tower B sit on Mindef-owned land.
Asked why it has two work-near-home facilities – the former Spring Singapore building and the one at Defence Technology Tower B – that are so close to each other, Mindef said it observed very high demand at the first site, which led to the other site being rolled out.
On the deciding factors behind the launch of a work-near-home facility, Mindef said it looks at usage rates, evaluates feedback from employees to understand their needs, and examines the general distribution of employees’ homes.
Asked if there are plans to expand the scheme, it added that it will continue tracking the usage of current sites before considering its next steps.

Plan your return to work and school trip following severe weather event
Drivers and passengers are urged to spend some time planning their return to work and school journeys from tomorrow, or consider working from home, with major impacts still being experienced across the state’s road and public transport network following this weekend’s severe weather event.
The South Coast rail line between Waterfall and Bomaderry is closed due to damage along the line. Buses are replacing trains in both directions between Waterfall to Bomaderry, inclusive of Wollongong to Port Kembla.
Other public transport services will run to altered timetables as recovery from the rain event continues and passengers need to check the Trip Planner or transport apps , and if possible consider an alternative transport mode if your usual route is impacted and allow plenty of extra travel time.
Drivers should take extreme care on the roads and avoid all non-essential travel in affected areas, with the impact of heavy rain and flooding likely to be felt across the coming days. Please exercise caution as some road surfaces may have deteriorated and have potholes. Council and Transport crews will work as quickly as possible to repair the damage.
Make sure you stay up-to-date with road closures by checking Live Traffic NSW and keeping across any weather warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology and the State Emergency Service.
Motorists are also reminded to never drive through floodwater, follow the directions of emergency services and take extreme care as conditions are changing quickly.
