Remove all unused master slides in a PowerPoint presentation

My company recently created a new PowerPoint template. On its own without any slides, it is 9MB in size. This is completely unusable for sending to mobile devices and annoys customers. The main culprit is high resolution images on the master slides. Most of the time I don't use the 8 slides with the high resolution images. I have tried compressing the images, but that only get's the template down to 5MB empty, still too big.

Is there anyway to save the presentation an automatically discard the unused giant master slides. Obviously I can go in and delete the master slides, but was wondering if there is anything that allows you to automatically do this.

  • This can be done with VBA or other types of automation; there's nothing built into PPT that lets the user do this easily. –  Steve Rindsberg Nov 14, 2014 at 4:37
  • have you tried saving it in PDF format, would also be better with mobile devices. –  Firee Dec 8, 2014 at 11:57
  • Often, very large (pixel dimension) images are embedded in PowerPoint and the display size shrunken to fit. Besides causing a huge file, it can reduce image sharpness because of the interpolation needed. You can seriously reduce the file size and improve appearance by looking at the maximum actual resolution you will need, based on what the slides will be viewed on. Resize the images to that resolution (externally, using an image editor), sharpen them, and then embed them in PowerPoint. If you don't need those slides at all, deleting them will have a bigger effect, of course. –  fixer1234 Jan 8, 2016 at 23:54

View as "slide masters". When you mouse over each slide master, you can see if that slide master is used. You can individually delete each slide master. Looks especially for those with pictures and remove the ones not used.

If you highlight the first slide, then keep hitting Delete repeatedly, only the slide templates that are not in use will be deleted. This is an easy way to manually roll through the templates quickly without worrying about removing one that is in use.

  • 1 I was looking for a bit more of an automated solution. Our template has around 100 master slides, which would take a very long time to delete all individually. –  Scott Dec 15, 2014 at 15:39
  • Since it shows you right on the slide browser which masters are used and which aren't, it sure seems like that should be possible. Nonetheless, I'm delighted to have found a solution that lets me reduce the file size even if I do have to do it manually. –  octern May 8, 2015 at 19:05
  • This is great and finally resolved why a blank, lone slide was taking up ~1MB in my presentation. @Scott if you're using a select few and know where they are, click, scroll, shift + click, delete is actually pretty fast. Or save out a new template with the ones you'll never use and you'd only have to do it once. –  Hendy Jul 19, 2017 at 21:00
  • 1 Be careful : in Powerpoint for Office 365 MSO, it's allowed to delete a Master and all its Layouts are deleted without checking if they are used. Consequently, the procedure is better delete repeatedly the Layouts (only the ones used can be deleted) then delete the Masters which have no Layout left. NB: this bug can be verified by having several Masters because with only one Master it's forbidden to delete it because there must always be at least one Master. –  Sandra Rossi Jul 30, 2020 at 12:10
  • 1 Here is an add-in that removes unused layouts and master slides. aneejian.com/powerpoint-downsizer-add-in –  Ian Feb 25, 2021 at 1:31

You can do this by creating a macro:

  • Where is the conditional logic, to remove only the not used layouts? –  g.pickardou Sep 9, 2021 at 5:40

The upvoted answer above still works and did work for me. The problem was that, when I copie the code I did not know what to do with it.

After a little research, I found that this is how to use the code above:

  • Open your PPT doc
  • Go to View, Click Macros
  • Choose where you want to be able to run this macro in the dropdown
  • Give it a name and create it.

Then a window pops up where you can paste the code.

Save it, go back to View-->Macros and Select the macro from the dropdown.

Click "Run" and DONE!

Below is basically the same answer as hazelmoon, but with screenshots and additional comments, especially a warning concerning the Master deletion which does not check if its Layouts are still used in the presentation.

In the menu View, click the button "Slide Master":

Powerpoint Slide Masters and Layouts

When you mouse over each slide Layout, you can see if that slide Layout is used:

enter image description here

You can individually delete each slide Layout. Look especially for those with pictures and remove the ones not used.

If you highlight the first slide, then keep hitting Delete repeatedly, only the slide templates that are not in use will be deleted. This is an easy way to manually roll through the templates quickly without worrying about removing one that is in use. If you select the first Layout, then keep hitting Delete repeatedly, only the slide Layouts that are not in use will be deleted.

This is an easy way to manually roll through the Layouts quickly without worrying about removing one that is in use.

Be careful , in Powerpoint for Office 365 MSO (and maybe more versions), deleting a Master will delete also its Layouts even if some of them are used (while deleting directly a Layout is not allowed if it's used). Consequently, delete first the unused Layouts repeatedly as you can be sure to not delete the used ones, then delete those Masters which don't have any Layout left.

Powerpoint Slide Masters and Layouts

The scripts above work but they do not eliminate all the unused master layouts, because either do not try (the first version) or because of the re-indexing that happens when you delete a master layout if it is not the last one -> Master Layout 4 is deleted and now former Master Layout 5 is Master Layout 4, which will not be deleted no matter what because the index will be on 5.

The scripts take this effect into account for the children layouts but not the master ones. The result is that when you execute the VBA, there are still master layouts left with unused layouts. To solve it you just need to count backwards also with the designs. Using a simplified version of @GrandWazoo code (w/o counters):

Any formatting or design changes that were made with the template will also be removed.

This will reset all slides in the presentation to the default theme.

It is important to remember that all formatting and design changes made with the template will also be removed, so be sure you are certain you want to remove the template before proceeding.

Potential Issues with Resetting PowerPoint To The Default Theme

When resetting your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to the default theme, it’s important to understand that any customizations you have made to the presentation will be lost.

This includes any custom color settings, fonts, or other design elements.

If you have spent a lot of time customizing your presentation, you may want to save a copy of the presentation before resetting it to the default theme.

In addition, resetting your PowerPoint presentation to the default theme may cause any animation or transitions to be lost.

If you have spent a lot of time customizing the timing and effects of animations and transitions, you may want to save a copy of the presentation before resetting it to the default theme.

Finally, if your PowerPoint presentation contains any embedded objects, such as videos or audio files, these may be lost when you reset the presentation to the default theme.

Again, it’s important to save a copy of your presentation before resetting it to the default theme to ensure that these embedded objects are not lost.

Additional Tips For Removing Templates From PowerPoint

Removing templates from Microsoft PowerPoint is a simple process, but there are a few additional tips you should know about to ensure a successful transition to the default theme.

First, it is important to note that when you reset the presentation to the default theme, all of the formatting and attributes from the template will be lost.

If you want to retain any of the formatting from the template, you will need to copy it to a new presentation before resetting the original.

Additionally, if you are using a PowerPoint template from an external source, you may need to save it to your computer before you can reset it.

Another tip is to be aware of the default themes formatting.

If you are using a template that has specific colors, fonts, or other attributes, they may be lost when you reset the presentation to the default theme.

For this reason, it is important to review the formatting of the template before resetting it.

Additionally, if you are using a template from an external source, you should check the formatting of the default theme before you reset the presentation.

Finally, it is important to note that when you reset a presentation to the default theme, it will be applied to all slides in the presentation.

This means that if you have slides with different formatting, the formatting will be lost when you reset the presentation.

If you want to keep the formatting on some slides, you will need to copy them to a new presentation before resetting the original.

By following these tips, you can ensure a successful transition from template to the default theme in Microsoft PowerPoint.

With just a few simple steps, you can easily remove a template and reset a presentation to the default theme.

Final Thoughts

Removing a template from PowerPoint is easy and quick, and it can help you create a more professional and organized presentation.

With these three easy steps, you can now open a presentation, select the Design tab, and reset it to the default theme.

Just remember to save your work before resetting your presentation, and youll be well on your way to creating a professional-looking presentation.

Now that you know how to remove a template from PowerPoint, why not give it a try?

How to remove slide numbers from specific slides in Microsoft PowerPoint

Your email has been sent

Image of Susan Harkins

Occasionally, you see a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with numbered slides. It’s the same as numbering pages in a Microsoft Word document. Similar to Word, there might be slides that you don’t want to number, such as the title slide. PowerPoint’s slide-numbering feature is easy to implement, but it is seriously limited.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to add slide numbers to a presentation. Then, I’ll show you how to remove numbers from specific slides and a trick that lets you restart slide numbering at the second slide, but that’s the only time it works.

SEE: Windows, Linux, and Mac commands everyone needs to know (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

I’m using Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but you can use older versions of PowerPoint. PowerPoint for the web supports slide numbers. If you’re working with a slide show other than the default, add slide numbering to the master show slides. The process is the same.

How to add slide numbers in PowerPoint

Adding slide numbers to a presentation is simple. Similar to Word, you’ll add a field that displays the current slide number. Because it’s a field, it updates when you move, delete and add slides. Let’s start by adding slide numbers to all the slides in a simple presentation:

  • After adding a slide, click the Insert tab.
  • Click Header & Footer in the Text group to add the numbers to the footer.
  • In the resulting dialog, click the Slide tab if necessary.
  • Check the Slide Number option ( Figure A ).
  • Click Apply to All. Notice that there’s also an Apply button. Click Apply to insert the page number only on the selected slide(s).

remove presentation from powerpoint slides

As you can see in Figure B , the slide number is in the bottom-right corner.

Enabling slide numbering for one or all slides is easy. Now, let’s turn it off for a specific page.

How to disable slide numbering in PowerPoint

Once you’ve enabled numbering for all slides, you might want to disable it for a page or two. For instance, this presentation has a title page — most do. As a rule, title slides don’t display a number, so let’s turn numbering off for the title slide as follows:

  • Click the Insert tab and then click Header & Footer in the Text group.
  • In the resulting dialog, check the Don’t Show On Title Slide option ( Figure C ).
  • If the title page is currently selected, click Apply. If you select another slide, click Apply All.

remove presentation from powerpoint slides

That was easy, but what if you want to disable numbering for a slide other than the title slide? Again, the solution is simple:

  • Select the slide in question. In this case, we’ll use slide 2.
  • Click Insert and then click Header & Footer in the Text group.
  • In the resulting dialog, uncheck the Slide Number option.
  • Click Apply to disable numbering for only the selected slide, the second slide.

This simple presentation has four slides. The first two have no slide numbers, and slides 3 and 4 do. You might want to consider restarting the page numbering at slide 3. Instead of displaying 3, you might want it to display 1. To the best of my knowledge, you can’t restart slide numbering. However, I do have a quick trick that will work only when you’ve turned numbering off for the first slide.

You can reset the starting slide number, and PowerPoint will apply it to the entire presentation. If you start with 4 slides and disable numbering for the first slide, you can reset that starting number to 0. Consequently, slide 1 is 0, slide 2 is 1 and so on. To reset the starting number to 0, do the following:

  • Click the Design tab.
  • In the Customize group, click Slide Size.
  • From the dropdown, choose Custom Slide Size.
  • In the resulting dialog, change the Number Slides From setting from 1 to 0 ( Figure D ).

remove presentation from powerpoint slides

At this point, slide 3 displays 2 and slide 4 displays 3. The only way to fix this is to enable numbering for slide 2 as follows:

  • Select slide 2 — the real slide 2.
  • Click the Insert tab.
  • Choose Header & Footer in the Text group.
  • In the resulting dialog, check Slide Number.

Figure E shows the slides and numbering. The title slide displays no number. The second slide displays 1. Slide 3 displays 2 and slide 4 displays 3. The only time this works is when the first slide doesn’t display a number and you reset the starting number to 0.

remove presentation from powerpoint slides

You can reset the starting slide number to a larger number. You’ll do so when combining different presentations. For instance, you might run the first show with slides 1 through 10 and then run a second, from slides 11 to 25.

There are third-party products available that allow you to implement more complex slide numbering schemes in PowerPoint.

How to delete all presentation notes at once in microsoft powerpoint.

You don’t have to waste time deleting individual speaker notes in PowerPoint.

Quick Links

How to remove powerpoint presenter notes.

With Microsoft PowerPoint speaker notes , you have your talking points handy during your presentation. But if you decide to remove those notes, it can be a tedious task. We'll show you how to remove the presentation notes all at once.

As a reminder, you can delete individual speaker notes easily. Open the presentation notes using the Notes button in the PowerPoint status bar or by clicking "Notes" in the ribbon on the View tab.

Go to the slide with the notes that you want to delete, click in the Notes area, and remove the text. You can do this quickly by selecting all of the text and hitting your Delete key.

While this is fine for deleting notes on a handful of slides, it can be time-consuming if you have dozens of slides. Here's how to remove them all in one fell swoop.

Click File > Info. Under Inspect Presentation, you'll see that your slideshow contains presentation notes.

Click the "Check for Issues" drop-down box in that section, and then select "Inspect Document."

You'll see many items that you can inspect your document for, so remember this convenient tool for those types of things later.

For this task, you'll only check the box for "Presentation Notes" at the bottom, and uncheck the rest. When you're ready, click "Inspect."

After a moment, you'll see the results letting you know that the presentation notes were found during the inspection. Click "Remove All."

And just like that, your presentation notes will be gone! You can hit "Close" if you're finished with the Inspect Document tool.

Click the arrow on the top left to return to your slideshow, and you should no longer have speaker notes on your slides.

If you want a copy of those notes before you remove them, you can always save a copy of your presentation beforehand. Or, you can print just the speaker notes for a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow .

I f you're looking to create a compelling presentation to showcase a new idea or persuade others, Google Slides may be the first option that comes to mind. If you want to make your presentation truly stand out, there are several alternatives to Google Slides that offer extra perks and features to give your presentations an edge. Microsoft PowerPoint

There's a reason so many businesses around the globe use Microsoft PowerPoint. Building its reputation as the go-to option for delivering high-quality presentations, the software generated $100 million in annual sales only three years after its initial release in 1990.

Microsoft PowerPoint may be Google Slides' largest competitor, but there are plenty of unique features that can add an extra flourish to your slides. PowerPoint excels in its impressive library of custom animations and slide transitions, which are fairly limited in Google Slides. Another unique feature is its AI-powered Designer tool. This provides professional design schemes that mirror the words used in your slides. For instance, if your title slide is named "Basketball Team 2024," Designer will automatically suggest pictures and slide layouts associated with basketball.

As PowerPoint has been in development longer than Google Slides, it naturally offers more nuanced features if you're looking for something specific. For example, you can save individual slides as an image file (using .png or .jpeg formats) or as a separate presentation file. There's also a large library of free PowerPoint templates designed to speed up your workflow. Moreover, PowerPoint integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Teams with its PowerPoint Live function, allowing you to easily share your presentation with your co-workers.

Prezi offers an innovative approach to showing presentations with its unique canvas feature. Unlike traditional presentation software, Prezi lets you zoom and pan around a flexible canvas. The canvas may feel distant to something of a presentation program, but there is still some linear order provided thanks to the Timeline view.

Finding ways to visualize data is one of the biggest challenges when dealing with presentation software. Prezi resolves this struggle with the help of its Story Blocks: a series of infographics available in multiple designs to visually represent data. You can easily edit infographics and even add animations to individual shapes. This can help add a story to your presentation and help you emphasize key points.

To further enhance your presentation visually, Prezi offers several topic path settings, which let you change how Prezi transitions from one topic to another. These options include subtopics, which are super helpful for breaking large chunks of information down. If you're looking for a unique, modern approach to presenting information, Prezi is a top pick.

If you're looking to create a professional presentation to convince potential clients about your business idea, Slidebean is a popular choice among professionals with plenty of customization options. One of the issues with Google Slides is its fairly limited template library, which is filled mostly with basic designs. Slidebean offers a better alternative with a broad selection of innovative templates split into categories for convenience.

The app's user interface is easy to navigate so that you can create slides in less time. Each slide has a dedicated Design and Outline tab. You can use the Outline tab to quickly edit the information on each slide without being distracted by all the visual elements. Another productivity-enhancing feature is the ability to generate a presentation theme from your website. Simply enter your URL, and Slidebean will automatically apply the theming to your presentation.

Slidebean is another presentation app to take advantage of AI. Using the Auto-Design feature, you can generate recommended slide layouts based on your existing content. It also features AI text suggestions designed to suit different industries. Overall, Slidebean offers a quicker, more efficient method for creating stunning presentations compared to Google Slides.

Canva is a well-known app among graphic designers, but it's also capable of making stunning presentations. The app also has mobile editions, so you can easily create and edit presentations on your Android phone , iOS device, or tablet. As long as you have an internet connection, you can modify your designs wherever you are.

To get started, head to Canva's online presentation maker . Canva offers a vast range of templates categorized by topic, which easily surpasses the simple templates in Google Slides . While some of the templates are only available to Canva Pro members, there is an ample amount of free templates to help you get started. You'll also find a large selection of stock photos, shapes, and illustrations to create beautiful customized slides.

Because Canva is built for graphic designers, you can access several features to give your presentation consistent theming. These include color palettes, font sets, and even a brand kit that allows you to add your company's fonts (available to Pro members only). One time-saving feature is Canva's Uploads tab, which lets you access recently uploaded media files. This offers a convenient way to copy content between different presentations.

Visme is a powerful visual design tool able to create videos, infographics, and presentations. One of the perks of using Visme is the company's free educational content, which offers advice on how to create impactful content to boost your brand. After signing up, the company also asks whether you're using Visme for your business, education purposes, or personal use to offer personalized tips.

In terms of charts and graphs, Visme offers some of the most impressive features we've seen from a presentation app, so you can effortlessly convey important statistics. From the Data tab, you can access dozens of graph styles to visually represent your data. Then, simply double-click a chart inside your presentation to edit the values instantly in a simple table format.

Another area that Visme excels in is collaboration. You can either generate a link to publish your presentation on the web or share your presentation privately with others. For each team member, you can choose who can view, edit, and comment slides for a seamless workflow. There's also a Slack integration that lets you receive messages whenever changes are made to your presentation. Visme is free for all users, with limited features available in its premium plans.

How Do I Remove The Instructions From A Powerpoint Slide (Or, From All Slides)?

My Powerpoint slides present with instructions right on the slide (e.g. 'Click to Add a Tile' and 'Click to Add a Subtitle'_.

How do I remove these instructions?

I followed directions for selecting the Office theme under the Design tab, but this did not work.

Note: I already have other information on this my slide, so it's not otherwise blank.
