Academic Engagement of Criminology Students in Northwestern University The Philippines
Applied Quantitative Analysis
Student engagement is one of the most critical methods of understanding students' behavior towards the teaching-learning process. Instructors and academic supervisors use a valuable instrument when developing successful pedagogical strategies to increase learning opportunities. This study identified the factors that influence the academic engagement of criminology students at Northwestern University. It specifically looks into the level of academic engagement as to literary identification (intellectual development and academic performance) and educational participation (number of hours spent in school activities, the extent of participation in school activities, and quality of relationship with peers, faculty, and staff), reasons for leaving the institution and the best aspects of Northwestern University to engage criminology students in learning. The study used a descriptive method using a survey questionnaire. Findings disclosed that factors under academic identification unde...

Anahtar Kelimeler: Öğrencilerin Okula Devamı, Nitel Çalışma, Not Ortalaması. Abstract n recent years, student retention has become an important concern for universities in the United States (U.S.). Student retention has consistently decreased over the past two decades. To explore student retention in an American college located in New England, a qualitative study was designed. Face to face interviews were utilized as a data collection method. The results show that friends, faculty members, future goals, and campus facilities are important factors that influence student retention in the criminology program. Limitations of the study along with a recommendation are discussed.

This mixed-methods study examined the traits and engagement of five students. The students were high school boys at an independent (non-public) school. The participants’ Big Five personality traits and trait emotional intelligence were examined in depth. In addition, observation and interviews were employed to gain a deep understanding of the students’ behavioral and affective academic engagement. Many themes and subtopics were explored. The themes (and subtopics) were traits (conscientiousness, impulse control, extraversion, stress management, happiness, optimism, and self-esteem), engagement (participation, attention, effort, and perseverance), course content (general academics, English, math, history, and science), and academic tasks (in-class: passive vs. active, out-of-class: homework, reading, academic writing, and creative writing). For many of the participants, the traits of conscientiousness and impulse control were related to low engagement. Participants with these traits ...

Engagement is a construct considered a positive cognitive state, persistent over time, of a motivational and social nature, not focused on a single objective or situation. Engagement, in the academic context, suggests an experimentation, on the part of students, of actions that indicate a high degree of involvement in their student activities. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate student engagement in academic activities. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional research, carried out with descriptive, correlation, comparison of means and standardized regressions. A socio-demographic questionnaire was used to characterize the sample and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Students. This instrument presented high factor regressions (β> 0.40), positive and significant internal correlations (p <0.01) and Cronbach's Alpha of the three dimensions greater than 0.80, indicating adequate psychometric quality. The sample consisted of 368 students from a Higher Education Institution in the state of Paraná. In general, average levels of academic engagement are observed. Significant average differences were also identified between the dimensions of the UWES-S and sociodemographic variables such as gender, children, course and semester. Finally, the results show that students show higher engagement at the beginning of the studies and that this must be carefully managed so as not to deteriorate over the years they have lived in academia.

This study investigated: 1) senior high school students’ academic engagement; 2) factors predicting their academic engagement. The sample for this study included senior high school students from two different contexts: Vientiane capital and Luangprabang. A purposive sampling technique was used. The study employed a convergent parallel design. Both quantitative and qualitative were collected simultaneously through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. This study analyzed for percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and conducted a content analysis. The results showed that most of the students hold a high level of engagement in all three dimensions (emotional, behavioral, and cognitive). The behavioral and emotional dimensions had the highest engagement scores ( = 3.45; = 3.42 ) , showing that the students in the sample are likely to be engaged in learning behaviorally and emotionally. Furthermore, the study found that teacher and peer interaction are the most powerful factor...

We applied the “informed citizen” thesis to public confidence in the police in the Philippines—a topic that has surprisingly received little research attention. We analyzed four waves of survey data from the Asian Barometer Survey (ABS), and we applied propensity score matching (PSM) method and regression models to the data. We operationalized education, interest in politics, and Internet usage as indicators of an informed citizen. We tested whether they are predictive of confidence in the police. Confidence in the Philippine police has gradually improved from 2002 to 2014. Regression analysis found that citizens with more education and more Internet usage displayed lower levels of confidence in the Philippine police. We also found that an interaction effect between education and political interests, with education having a stronger connection to confidence in the police among those with greater political interests. Our findings support the informed citizen thesis and shed new light on the study of confidence in the Philippine police.

Community-oriented policing to reduce crime, disorder and fear and increase satisfaction and legitimacy among citizens: a systematic review.
The Public Purposes of Private Education: a Civic Outcomes Meta-Analysis
In other countries, the ABS surveys were conducted in slightly different years within the same wave. The first wave of surveys was carried out in 2001–2003, the second wave in 2005–2008, the third and the fourth in 2010–2012 and 2014–2016, respectively.
The variable “self-reported income status” was excluded in our later data analysis because of its high missing rate and non-significance. To ensure robustness, we fitted the models both with and without income levels, and the main findings did not differ in either condition. Data and codes are available upon request.
R package “Amelia II” employs EMB (expectation maximization with bootstrapping) methods. We reported the descriptive and regression results based on the pooled, complete data with 72,118 observations for the entire ABS data and 4800 observations from the Philippines; this means all the original data were retained in the analysis.
From the very few cases who reported “do not understand the question,” most of them are from less-educated groups (less than elementary school) or the elder cohorts. Therefore, we assume they choose this item because they sincerely do not understand and it implies, they do not use the Internet. This step is taken for ensuring higher valid response rate; and we tried both with and without these respondents, which does not change our main findings at all.
In preliminary analyses, we fitted the models with age and age’s quadric term; the results of an ANOVA showed age was sufficient.
The respondent could give the following responses as well: “Do not understand the question,” “Cannot choose,” and “Decline to answer.” These responses would be considered missing information.
Codes and results of ordered probit models are available from the authors upon request.
Codes and results are available from the authors upon request.
The variables of marital status and religious affiliation were used in the propensity score matching steps, so we included them in the descriptive analysis; they were excluded from the final regression models because of lack of significance.
