Doing homework can be both time-consuming and frustrating, and you probably want to do more with your free time than just homework. When you have a lot of work to do, it can be tough to work efficiently. By staying focused, organizing and planning, and motivating yourself, you can get your homework done in a timely manner and move onto more fun and exciting activities. But you should start with putting away all distractions such as your devices unless you need them.They are normally the main distraction. You should also work in a quiet place so you are not attempted to go and do something else. For example, you should not work near your TV because you will be tempted to go and watch it.

• Download website-blocking apps such as Freedom or SelfControl to stay focused while using your computer for homework. Some, such as the Chrome extension Strict Workflow, even have the added bonus of preventing you from cancelling the timer once it has started.

• If one subject or type of assignment is taking much more time than the others, you may want to ask for a little extra help in that area from your teacher or parent.
• If you get distracted or go off-task, don't make excuses for yourself. (e.g. "I won't be able to focus until I do this anyway." or "I'm sure it will only take a minute or two."

• Consider consolidating your multiple different subject folders and notebooks into one big binder separated by tab dividers. This way, all of your schoolwork will be in one place.

• Decide how much time you want to spend on your homework collectively.
• Make a list of all the different tasks you need to finish.
• Estimate how much time you’ll be able to spend on each task to finish your homework when you want to.

• If you set a timer, it can motivate you to get your homework done more quickly. Be sure to take a 2-5 minute break in between. For example, if you're going to do an assignment that you expect to take 30 minutes, set a timer for 15 minutes. Take a 2-minute break when the timer goes off, then set your timer again for 15 minutes.
• It can be good to have friends over if they help motivate you and are interested in getting their homework done quickly as well. They might be a distraction at times but it can also be easier to work when there are people around you who are working too.

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

• Best for: Practicing tough material 

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs. 

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace. 

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

• Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year 
• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance 

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription. 

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
• Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.  

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

• Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device. 

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college. 

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses. 

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes. 

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class. 

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?” 

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating. 

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.” 

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself!

Okay, so what happens next after clicking the submit button on the ordering form? 

Unlike other essay writing service companies where you pay directly after ordering your essay, Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s sales department will contact you via email . 

You’re probably curious as to how long you have to wait for them to contact you. In our experience, they contacted us the same day, only around 3 hours after completing the form. This seemed quite quick and efficient . 

So, what happens when they do contact you? The first email we received from the sales department did not directly give the essay’s price. Instead, they asked us how many words/pages our essay had to be and if there was a grading rubric.

You might want to include this information to describe what you need done; that way, you receive the pricing quicker! 

Personally, we thought it was a good sign that they asked for the essay’s grading rubric, as it seemed like they really wanted to understand the assignment’s requirements.

After sending the grading rubric, the sales department responded by saying these types of assignments usually range from $159- $259 depending on how busy their “experts” are. They also asked if we wanted them to check with their experts to give us an exact price.

The answer to this was yes, as that was the reason we completed the ordering form in the first place. This back and forth just to get a price was definitely a downside of Pay Me To Do Your Homework. We also thought that such a significant price range and reason were not very clear . 

In the next email, we received a $209 price that didn’t match their advertised price of starting at $29 per page on their website. For a four-page paper, the pricing should come out to $116. So almost $100 more than we initially thought was the final price . 

After receiving the price, the sales department will ask if you want to book it. And you will let them know if you do or not in your email response.

Okay, everything sounds good until here, but how do you actually pay for your essay? Well, after you let the sales department know that you’re going to book it, they will send a payable invoice your way.

When they send the invoice to you, you should know that they ask you to pay by a specific time that same day to keep the exact quote.

Considering that Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s price is already on the expensive side, it can feel unnecessary to have to pay by a certain time in order to keep the exact quote. Although paying by a certain day is completely understandable so that the writers can begin working on your assignment.

When you open up the invoice link, you simply click the ‘pay now’ button to pay for your essay.

After paying the invoice, you will receive an email that says your payment has been received and to email their project management team if you have any other questions or would like an update on your essay.

You also receive a case number , which you are to include when emailing the project management team.

Overall, we rated the ordering process a 7/10 . The positives are that you don’t have to create an account within Pay Me To Do Your Homework, and they directly assign you a writer. 

However, the downside is that there is a lot of back and forth via email before you receive your actual price. There was also a lack of transparency in where the final price comes from.

Communication with Assigned Writer

By now, you’re probably wondering if you can communicate with your assigned writer when ordering an essay from Pay Me To Do Your Homework.

Being able to communicate with your assigned writer is vital because it can be a safeguard to ensure your essay turns out well. This is because you can share crucial information with them without intermediaries, and they can ask you any questions they have regarding the assignment.

The unfortunate thing about Pay Me To Do Your Homework is that you won’t be able to communicate with your assigned writer directly.

So, instead of emailing your assigned writer directly, you have to email the project management team , and they will, in turn, reach out to your assigned writer.

In Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s own words, they do so in order to protect the safety of clients and their experts.

However, your assigned writer’s lack of direct contact can make you feel detached. 

There are times when this communication style is not always convenient. Like when we asked the project management team if they could update us on how the essay was going. They responded quite quickly and said they would get us an update from the ‘expert’ right away.

We didn’t receive any input from the expert until the following day, and it wasn’t good news . A specific microorganism was selected for the essay ordered, as mentioned at the beginning of the review. We also specified which microorganism we wanted them to write about in the ordering form.

Yet, in this update, the assigned writer asked if it was possible to write about another microorganism because they had done the paper halfway through, only to realize we selected a different microorganism.

These types of issues could potentially be prevented if clients have direct communication with their assigned writer.

So, what ended up happening? We let them know that we could not change the specific microorganism, to which the expert asked if we could extend the deadline . We agreed and ended up receiving the essay a day later than the deadline we had specified.

When our essay was done, we received an email from Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s project management team with the essay attached. They asked us to reply to the email to ensure that we received the essay. 

We definitely consider the lack of communication with your assigned writer one of the major downsides to Pay Me To Do Your Homework.

Now, you must know that the emails indicate when it’s an update from ‘the expert.’ Quite literally, the emails, although sent from the Project Management Team, begin with ‘from expert .

Overall, we would rate the communication with your assigned writer a 5/10 . This is because you have no direct communication with your assigned writer. Due to this, you don’t receive updates from your writer in a timely manner. 

Pay Me To Do Your Homework Cost

For starters, on Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s pricing page , you will see that their essay’s prices start at $29 per page . 

Now, you might be wondering which factors affect the price. Well, on their actual pricing page, you won’t find anything other than the starting price. But upon some digging of their page, all they state is that the difficulty of the work and timeframe of completion affects the price.

However, they don’t actually mention how they measure the difficulty of how these factors affect the price in detail.

Personally, we paid $209 for a 4-page essay due in four days.

Pay Me To Do Your Homework is definitely more expensive than the average essay writing service and will not fit everyone’s budget.

Overall, we would give Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s cost a 6/10. This is because they don’t take the time to explain how they measure the difficulty of your work or what they consider a short timeframe of completion. Also, as they are on the expensive side, they may not suit everyone’s budget.

Essay Quality

Okay, now the moment everyone’s been waiting for, are their essays any good?

As we mentioned earlier, we received the essay one day later than the deadline we had put in the ordering form due to the misunderstanding of essay requirements. 

We had uploaded the essay’s instructions and the essay guidelines in the ordering form. Both these files mention which sections must be included in the essay and the information that must be included within each section.

The essay we received had all of the necessary sections. However, the essay did not have an introduction or a conclusion, which was asked for in the essay guidelines. This shows that the writer did not pay full attention to both files uploaded.

Regarding the information present within each section, the writer did quite well, considering they covered almost all of the necessary points !

We rated the essay’s content a 7/10. This is because they did cover all the required sections, and the information was quite sophisticated. However, they did not include an introduction or conclusion.

Writers English Level

Pay Me To Do Your Homework really prides itself on being a U.S. based company . They emphasize that you don’t have to worry about your essay’s English level by choosing them.

This was why we were surprised by the English level of our writer. After reviewing the essay, there were some indicators that our writer’s level of English was not native . These indicators included: incorrect verb tenses at times, incorrect sentence structures, and typos.

These types of errors are mistakes that native English speakers just don’t make. Or at least after a second or third review.  

Another negative aspect of the essay is that the writer included many sentences that didn’t make a lot of sense . Some of these sentences were unclear because they were very long.

Overall, we gave the essay’s clarity a 6/10 due to sentences that were very long and difficult to understand.

Poor APA Citing Skills

Another huge error present in our essay was the citing skills. In the first draft we received, there were seven references in a 4-page essay, and there were several instances where there were absolutely no references in specific paragraphs that merited citing.

After seeing this, we requested that the writer fix the essay’s references and citing . However, the citing was not completely fixed even in the updated version received. Yes, we saw more references, but the essay still had sections that lacked any references when the information was clearly retrieved from a source.

Below, you can see an example of an entire section that has no references:

We rate the APA citations a 5/10. Because the first draft we received had many citing errors, and there were entire sections of information without any references. We think that if you’re paying a high amount of money for this service, those errors shouldn’t exist.

One thing Pay Me To Do Your Homework got a 10/10 is plagiarism. After receiving the essay, we gave it to our in-house Editor In Chief, who ran it through our own editing software tools and found a 1% plagiarism score. What showed as plagiarized was one sentence. Overall the essay did not contain any plagiarized content. Therefore we gave them a 10/10.

We looked through Pay Me To Do Your Homework’s website, trying to find the guarantees they offer (example: revisions).

And to our surprise, they publicize only one guarantee, which is if your essay doesn’t receive an A or a B, you get your money back .

However, they don’t offer much information on how you would actually request a refund if you don’t receive an A or B. They just plaster the sentence, ‘A or B guarantee’ all over their website but don’t specify the details or logistics. 

It is a little disappointing that there are no revision guarantees stated on their website. Revisions should be a basic guarantee in any essay writing service because the client may not always be satisfied with the first draft they receive.  

Even though Pay Me To Do Your Homework doesn’t state that they guarantee revisions anywhere on their website, we asked if it would be possible for the assigned writer to modify the references after receiving the essay with serious citing issues. The assigned writer did send back a new version (although the citing issue was not totally fixed).

So we guess you can try your luck and ask for revisions , and they just might do it; however, there are no safeguards when it comes to this aspect.

Overall, we rated the guarantees they offer a 5/10. This is because they do not cover how to actually request a refund for the grade guarantee they offer. Also, a downside is that they do not have any explicit revision guarantees. Yet when we did ask them to provide a revision, we did receive one but ultimately not exactly what we were looking for.

Is Pay Me To Do Your Homework Legit?

So, is Pay Me To Do Your Homework legit? 

Well, they definitely are legit in terms of delivering what we purchased. However, we suggest that you shouldn’t count on their A or B guarantee . We just did not feel confident that the finalized essay would reach those standards due to the APA citation errors and lack of clarity in grammar and syntax. 

And it’s not worth risking your grade and handing in a Pay Me To Do Your Homework essay directly to your professor just on the pretext of this guarantee.

One aspect that is not “legit” about Pay Me To Do Your Homework is the profile pictures used. The sales department correspondent that emailed me had the same profile picture we have seen in multiple essay writing services .

In fact, we placed this image through reverse image search, and it sparked multiple results. Just take a look below:

There were five pages of results, which indicate that the image is indeed fake. 

This is a little disappointing as fake images can undermine a client’s sense that the company is credible or trustworthy. Also, when fake images are used, it can feel like you’re not talking to a real person. 

Overall, we would give their legitimacy a 7/10 due to receiving the essay we requested, but their fake profile pictures were not transparent.

‘Make homework’ vs. ‘do homework’ in English

First, let me note that “homework” is an uncountable (mass) noun in English. It is a common mistake, even among some non-native teachers of English as a foreign language, to say things like, “Hand in your homeworks, please.” The word “homework”, being uncountable, does not have a plural form. If you really must refer to several separate “pieces” of homework, the word you are looking for is “assignment”:

Let’s move on to the main topic of this article. Without further ado, the correct verb to use with “homework” is “do”, not “make”:

“Homework” is not in any way special in this respect. We always use “do” with activities and “make” with objects that are being made. Just like we “do work”, not “make work”, we also “do homework”, meaning the activity.

The confusion arises from the fact that the most direct translation of “homework” into other languages often refers to the sheets of paper on which the assignments are written, hence it would make sense to “make it”. For the very same reason, we wouldn’t usually speak about “writing homework”:

Kids have been using OpenAI software to do their homework. Here's what the AI thinks about that.

Kids on Reddit have been telling tales of using OpenAI's Playground to get straight A grades in their homework. It's no secret, but when someone asked the same AI its thoughts on how it was used in this schoolyard cheating scheme, it actually made some pretty good arguments against its own use.

This tweet from MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), shows OpenAI's answer to the following prompt: "Explain the moral and social issues with using AI to do your homework." 

Spoiler: it's one of resounding negativity.

"They may not be learning the material as well as they could be," the AI writes. "This could lead to problems down the road when they are expected to know the material for exams or real-world applications.

"Additionally, using AI to do homework could lead to cheating." 

No sh*t. Unless you've been assigned a project specifically about using AI for school, it's definitely cheating. Maybe not if you're only using it to help generate ideas, rather than writing entire essays.

I did find a couple of references to using AI for homework across Reddit, along with a few questions about how helpful it might be from prospective cheaters, but one Reddit post sticks out as the post MIT was potentially referencing.

Imagine half the kids in class suddenly shifting from Ds to As in a single week. A bit sus if you ask me, and you'd hope the teacher would realise something was up.

One mom says her kids haven't been doing homework for years. Here's how she opted them out and what experts say.

When Juliana Porter thinks about the feeling that homework induces, one word comes to mind: dread. With afternoon and evening time constraints, the North Carolina mom of three wants her kids to have some time to relax and unwind, so homework is often pushed until during or after dinnertime.  

“The subject we’ve found to be the most challenging is math, in large part because strategies and ‘show your work’ are often required to get correct answers,” says Porter. “But as parents who are not in the class to learn new methods, we’re not able to help. Or we can help, but it’s not the correct method being taught and adds to our child’s confusion. These at-home cram sessions usually end in frustration for both child and parent.”

The Porter family’s experience isn’t unique. Research published in the Child & Youth Care Forum found more than 25% of parents and kids say homework “always or often interferes with family time and creates a power struggle,” while more than 36% of kids say homework sometimes forces them to get less sleep in grades 3 to 6. According to Stanford research , 56% of students surveyed say homework is a primary source of stress.

While many families do their best to help their children complete homework with as little frustration as possible, my family has chosen a different option: to simply skip it. And I don’t mean just skipping it on the nights it's difficult either. For four years, my family has totally opted out of homework, which I’ve learned doesn’t produce enough benefits for the stress it causes. And I want other parents to know that opting out of homework is an option for their kids, too.

Homework: How to Opt Out

If your child goes to an open admissions public school, opting out of homework can be something you consider. While it may be a particularly good choice if homework is causing major household stress, you don’t have to wait until your child is miserable to act if they (or you) would simply prefer to spend the time in other ways. There are no legal requirements that students complete work outside of school hours and, for many children, the actual determinants of homework outweigh the theoretical benefits. 

To opt out, I send a note to each of my children's teachers at the beginning of the year letting them know that my child will not be completing homework, that their overall grade should not be impacted, and that they should not be penalized in any way for not turning in homework assignments.

I also let them know that we're committed to our kids' education, that we read together most evenings, and that, if my child is struggling or needs extra support in any subject, we're happy to brainstorm solutions to help them get the practice they need. Though no teachers have pushed back yet (and several have told us they wish they were not required to assign homework and that more families knew they could opt out), we have a small folder of research on the detriments of homework that we could share with an administrator if needed. 

Opting out has worked well for our family but implicit bias might mean that other families don't receive the same neutral or positive reaction that our white family does. 

"Many minoritized and historically marginalized families never consider opting out of homework, even when they know that it's not meaningful," says Sequoya Mungo, Ph.D. , an educational equity consultant and co-founder of BrownLight Inc. , a company helping to create positive diversity and inclusion results in educational, nonprofit, and corporate environments. "When white families make these types of educational choices, they are viewed as forward-thinking and seen as advocates for their children's education. Teachers and others often think that they're being proactive and identifying other enrichment opportunities for their kids. When non-middle class and non-white families opt out, the assumption is that parents don't value education and don't want to, or are unable to, help their kids with homework.” 

According to Dr. Mungo, coming with research or policy can be helpful as even some school level administrators are unaware that opting out is within your rights as parents. “The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to not be met with pushback.” 

Why Families May Want to Opt Out of Homework

Since homework is so prevalent, many assume it's vital, or at least important, to kids' academic growth. But the reality is murkier. "There's really no good evidence that homework completion positively impacts kids' academic growth or achievement," says Samantha Cleaver, Ph.D. , a reading interventionist and author of Raising an Active Reader: The Case for Reading Aloud to Engage Elementary School Youngsters . 

A 2006 meta-analysis of homework and achievement found moderate correlation in middle school and little correlation in elementary school, while there was negative correlation (that is, more homework means less learning) in third grade and below.

While research shows homework can help high school kids improve grades, test results, and likelihood of going to college, the reality is academic pressures in the U.S. have increased over the last two decades, and so too has the amount of homework that kids are assigned. The National Education Association (NEA) recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per night per grade level, but that's often not what's happening. According to a 2015 study, elementary school students are being assigned more than is recommended , sometimes almost triple the amount. And, often, even when educators are assigning homework they think falls in this window, it can take some students, particularly those who are “behind” already or who have learning disabilities, much more time to complete. 

Excessive homework can negatively impact sleep, mental health, and stress levels. It’s also important to note homework is an issue of equity, since not every child has the same opportunities at home. "When kids are doing work in school, the classroom environment serves as somewhat of an equalizer,'' says Dr. Mungo. "Kids have access to the same teacher and generally the same resources within the classroom setting. At home, kids have different environments, different access to resources, and different levels of support." This means kids with less support and more challenges often end up getting lower grades or being penalized for not turning in work for reasons totally outside their control.

Making Change on Homework

Parents who don't want to be the only ones opting out can work to change the homework culture at their school. Consider reaching out to your principal about your homework concerns or connecting with other parents or the PTA to help build support for your cause.

And if you do opt out, don't be shy about letting other parents know that's what you've chosen to do. Sometimes just knowing there is an option and that others have opted out successfully can help families decide what's right for them.

What to Do With the Extra Time

When Porter thinks about what a life without homework would be like, she envisions a much more relaxed evening routine. “I imagine a scenario where my kids can do their after-school activities, read more, get outside, and generally just decompress from the daily eight-hour grind that is school with no more dread and no more crying,” she says.

If you opt out of homework and find your family with more time for other sorts of learning, leisure, or adventure, be thoughtful how you’ll structure your new routine and talk with your kids about the value of doing nothing, the importance of family time, or how to spend their time in ways that matter to them.

And if you want to be sure they're getting in some valuable post-school learning, consider repurposing your previous homework time to reading with your kids. "Reading aloud has benefits long after your kids can read on their own," says Dr. Cleaver. "Encourage them to choose books about subjects they're interested in, snuggle up together, and enjoy watching them learn through active reading."

But reading isn’t the only way to reap benefits. "There are lots of things that kids can do after school that will positively impact their growth and development that don't involve sitting down to do more of the work they've done at school,'' says Dr. Cleaver. "Time to decompress through play or relaxation isn't just fun, it actually helps kids' brains and bodies relax, making them more open to learning."
