Teacher Resignation Letter Examples (Free Templates)

It’s actually very simple.

Teacher resignation letter on desk and on tablet.

You’ve decided to leave your job—now what? Putting together a teacher resignation letter can feel tricky, especially if you’re leaving for difficult reasons. The good news is, it’s really not hard at all. Find out what to include in your letter and to whom you should send it.

Plus fill out the form on this page to get a free editable Google Docs template with sample teacher resignation letters to help you compose your own.

What’s the purpose of a teacher resignation letter?

What it is: A resignation letter is simply the formal document your employer will add to your file, verifying that you resigned from your job voluntarily. That’s it. It’s short and very easy to write.

What it’s not: This is not a multi-page screed describing everything you hate about your job, dashed off in triumph and delivered by storming into your principal’s office. It’s also not a place to write a love letter to your school, although you can include a statement about being grateful to have worked there or something similar. Despite what you’ve seen in movies, a resignation letter is just a piece of paper for your file, nothing more.

When do I write my teacher resignation letter?

Here’s one of the most important things to know: A resignation letter is NOT how you announce that you’re resigning. Instead, you need to have a conversation face-to-face with your principal first. Do this before telling anyone else you’re leaving, because you don’t want the news trickling back to administration secondhand.

Once you’ve had that conversation, your principal will likely ask you to submit a letter of resignation. If you’ve brought it with you, you can hand it over then. If not, submit it as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT: Before you resign, make sure you’re not breaking any of the conditions or clauses in your contract. If you’re resigning at the end of the school year, choose a resignation date that allows you to complete any final administrative work. You and your principal may want to decide on this date together.

If you’re resigning in the middle of the school year, things might be a little different. Again, check your contract. It may state the required amount of notice you need to provide. If not, give at least the standard two-week notice expected for most jobs.

Where do I send my resignation letter?

Each district is likely to have their own requirements for your letter of resignation, so check your contract or employee handbook, and ask your principal if you’re not sure. In most cases, you’ll address your letter to the principal, superintendent, or school board.

Often, you can hand your letter to your principal, and they’ll take care of it. But if you’re required to submit it to another location, like the county school board, you may decide you want to mail your letter. If so, consider using certified mail so you can ensure it was received. You don’t want to arrive on your final day and find out you’ve got a paperwork problem that could hold things up. ADVERTISEMENT

Can I send my resignation letter via email?

That depends. Some districts are happy to accept your resignation letter via email, either as an attachment or in the body of the email. But others may ask you to submit a hard copy. Again, if you’re unsure, just ask your principal or school administrator.

What should I include in my teacher resignation letter?

This really is the easy part! Your resignation letter only requires a few vital pieces of information.

  • Current date: This will help verify that you gave the required amount of notice.
  • Decision to resign: Just write one simple sentence stating that you’ve made the decision to resign. There’s no need to include a reason (and in fact, it’s probably better not to).
  • Final day of employment: Even if you mention a “two-week notice” in your letter, be sure to include the exact final date that you’ll be working.
  • Full legal name: Include your name as it appears on your contract or employment paperwork.

Seriously, that’s it! You can include one more sentence about appreciating your time at the school, or stating your willingness to help make the transition period easier. It’s a nice way to leave a professional, polished image behind as you move on.

How to Write a Resignation Letter for Teaching · TIPS & TEMPLATES

By: Author Jane Morris

Do you need to know how to write a resignation letter for teaching? You’ve had it with being a teacher. You’re done.

Maybe you’ll try another school or district, or perhaps you never want to be within fifty miles of a school again. Both are understandable.

However, you’ll need to write an official letter of resignation to turn in to HR to let them know you won’t be coming back to teaching. Depending on a few factors, this can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

But it’s daunting. It often feels like if you don’t quit a teaching job the exact way they want you to, then your neck is on the line. Even if you check every box and tie up every loose end into a neat little bow, it STILL feels like they’ll hang you out to dry.

I’ve quit teaching. I know a lot of former teachers who have too. It is possible to write a seamless resignation letter that gets you out of teaching with your head still connected to your body

Let me show you how to write the perfect teacher resignation letter.

Every. Last. Beat.

A teacher's resignation letter with questionable corrections made to increase the impoliteness.

Factor #1 to Consider Before Writing a Resignation Letter

Will you need a recommendation from anyone at this school?

If you might need a professional reference in the future, keep your letter short, respectful, and avoid dumping all the real reasons you want to quit teaching .

You are also supposed to give at least two weeks’ notice (or whatever is in your contract, which might be way longer than that). Moreover, it IS considered a courtesy to let your supervisor know in person before you send the letter.

So, if you can stomach letting the principal know in person that you’re leaving and waiting this out for at least two weeks, you want those weeks to be somewhat low-stress. Keep that in mind before you trauma dump in this letter.

An angry, male teacher screaming in anguish before resigning from his job.

This only matters if you will ever need to acknowledge that you worked at this place in the future and possibly need a recommendation from them.

What to Write in Your Resignation Letter to Secure that Teaching Reference

If this is the case, grit your teeth and try one of these openers:

  • This letter/email is to formally notify you that I am resigning from my position as _______ at _______ school. My last day will be two weeks from today on ________.
  • Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as a _______ at _______ school. My last day will be _______.
  • I’m writing to give my formal notice that I’ll be leaving my role as _______ for _______ school district on _______ (date).
  • (Or, if you will leave at the end of the year, then use this: effective upon the completion of my contract for the 2024-2025 school year. )

Next, experts recommend thanking them for the opportunity they provided.

I am going to go ahead and assume you’re leaving your teaching job suddenly because this opportunity turned into a downright nightmare. But again, if you might need to reference this job in the future, consider this bit of BS next. (And honestly, there probably was at least something that you appreciate about the job, even if it was a few of the kids or coworkers. Try to focus on that.)

Here is an example:

  • Thank you so much for the opportunity to work here for the past _______ (amount of time). I’ve enjoyed getting to know _______ (someone? anyone?). I’m excited to take my experiences at _______ school with me as I pursue the next step of my career (or a career change).

Lastly, you are supposed to assure these people that you won’t be a total dumpster fire or make their lives miserable during the next two weeks.

Maybe try one of these:

  • I’ll do everything within my power to wrap up my duties and help any team members who will be taking over for me during the next two weeks. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to support this transition.
  • Please let me know if I can be of any assistance during this transition.
  • I will do what I can to ensure a smooth wrap-up of my duties.

Now choose a fake-ass closing:

  • Thank you for your understanding

Factor #2 to Consider Before Writing a Resignation Letter

You’re not trying to burn this bridge completely…

But you feel you have to take this opportunity to give a brief description of what went wrong for you and how they can improve things for the next teacher they rope into your position.

In this case, start with one of the respectful openers from above, and thank them for the opportunity to serve their students or community or something cute like that. Then transition to a brief, seemingly polite few comments on the trauma you endured while teaching that led to you writing this resignation letter.

A sad teacher with smudged mascara holding a drawing of a smile in front of her face.

Here are some examples:

  • One of my greatest concerns has been…
  • I am disappointed by…
  • Recent practices/policies such as _______ have left me deeply worried…

Now add the part about a smooth transition, and you’re done!

Here is an excellent example of a respectful and heartfelt teacher resignation letter that strikes a good balance between not throwing the school completely under the bus but still making some strong points:

A FINE EXAMPLE OF AN HONEST RESIGNATION LETTER FROM AN EX-TEACHER

“It is with a heavy heart that I write to formally tender my resignation from my position as a teacher and coach at _______ Public School, effective upon the completion of my contract for 2022-2023. Please accept this letter as my official notice.

Over the past 14 years, it has been both an honor and a privilege to be part of the esteemed educational community at _______. During my tenure, I have witnessed the dedication and hard work of my colleagues, as well as the boundless potential of our students. It is their growth and success that have always been at the core of my passion for teaching.

However, recent developments and practices within the school system have left me deeply disappointed and concerned. Despite my utmost efforts to advocate for positive change, I have witnessed a growing disregard for the well-being of our students and staff, especially those who identify as LGBTQ+ . In addition, our school system’s administrators are allowing local politicians to inform their decisions to the detriment of their students and staff. These practices, in my opinion, do not align with the values I hold dear as an educator.

While my decision to resign has not been easy, it is driven by a sense of personal dignity and duty to protect the best interests of our students and the principles of fairness and justice. I firmly believe that education should foster an inclusive and equitable environment that empowers every student to reach their full potential. It is my intention, post-resignation, to continue my work to address these systematic issues and ensure a brighter future for all students.”

Factor #3 to Consider Before Writing a Resignation Letter

Let’s burn this bridge, baby! I’m done!

If you vomited a little in your mouth when reading the suggestions above, then maybe you’ve grown to hate teaching altogether. (Or at least the tyrants that created this toxicity.)

You might just be ready to burn this bridge right down!

This means you’re sure you won’t need a reference from anyone in this school district, and you really need to let them know what’s on your mind. Just remember this: the longer and crazier it is, the less likely they are to read it.

If you just need to get it off your chest, by all means! But if you have some solid points you’re trying to make, consider keeping it short and not a total rant.

A picture of a burning building representing one angle for writing a teaching resignation letter.

You can try saying something like…

“For the last several years, I’ve struggled to work in the best interests of all my students in the face of an administration that seems resolute in undermining teachers and working against the needs of the children, including:”

And then proceed with the reasons that are driving this resignation from teaching and deliciously spicy letter:

  • Repeated attempts to eliminate teachers’ state-mandated planning and preparation periods in favor of administrative meetings which waste valuable time that ought to be spent developing engaging lessons for the students.
  • The endless micromanagement of teachers and growing requirements of busy work that diminish our ability to address the needs of each student individually flexibly.
  • Lack of support for teachers in dealing with disruptive, violent, and otherwise inappropriate behaviors of some students, resulting in a loss of value for most of the class.
  • An unclear behavior management system. When teachers ask for an explanation of the “steps” they are supposed to follow when dealing with extreme behaviors, we are unable to get one. This specific issue has led to _______.

“There are some systematic issues concerning safety that are extremely concerning such as:”

  • Student behavior spiraling out of control (e.g. mental health issues, violence, vaping, swearing).
  • Students are often abusive to staff , and when reported, our reality is denied.
  • Substitutes and teaching aids are thrown into situations without support or direction on how to handle difficult students.

“There are many concerning things being done by the administration that I have witnessed during my tenure here, such as…”

  • Altering students’ grades
  • Lying about data
  • Manipulation of students’ Individual Education Plans

If you want to take aim at a particular administrator, here are some suggestions:

  • Unfortunately, I can no longer remain a highly effective teacher without an administrator to not only lead me but to support their staff. In the past, I have stood by and watched while _______ lied/refused to/allowed/ignored/refused/undermined _______
  • Instead of unification, they have created a division by…
  • Their lack of concern for staff and students is blatantly obvious in their refusal to lead by example and their continuous habit of passing responsibilities onto others.
  • They have allowed students to bully teachers and support staff without any repercussions.
  • They have failed to support the teachers in their attempts to improve and control behavior.
  • They support systemic issues of nepotism by promoting the well-connected, regardless of how poorly they perform or behave, instead of keeping and supporting those who are principled, competent, and visionary and whose work stands on its own merit.
  • Too many of the brightest and best faculty members have been sabotaged, let go, or bullied by the administration to drive them out of the profession and make room for the advancement of someone who is far less competent but far more compliant.
  • I find it nothing short of tragic that a handful of people in power continually, consistently, and predictably choose to take care of themselves and their own instead of looking to our collective future and delivering the best education possible to all of our children.

Factor #4 to Consider Before Writing a Resignation Letter

How to Write a Teacher Resignation Letter Without Burning Bridges

how to write a teacher resignation letter without burning bridges

A teacher resignation letter is necessary if you resign early from your teaching contract. Resigning from any job is difficult, but resigning mid-contract from a teaching position is complicated.

Overcoming Challenges of Writing a Resignation Letter

When a teaching contract is signed, both parties intend for the contract to continue for an entire academic year. Schools hate to lose teachers mid-year because it disrupts the students’ educational experience and decreases academic progress. Although this is something that schools don’t like, it does happen.

From dissatisfaction with school policies and a hostile school atmosphere to required classroom changes or an unexpected illness, you may be unwilling or unable to complete the term of your teaching contract. If this occurs in your teaching career, you will be in the unenviable position of writing a teacher resignation letter.

A resignation letter’s composition can be challenging, even for the most adept writer, because it requires tact and consideration. The official document you submit to your school principal will set the tone for your final weeks at the school and your relationship moving forward.

Write Concisely

When composing a teacher’s resignation letter, keep it short and to the point; this is not the time to ramble. Make sure you state your name and contact information, the fact that you are resigning, and the date. No other information is necessary for this type of letter. Here are some examples :

  • I submit my resignation as a Special Education Teacher at ABC Schools, effective June 25, 2016.
  • Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation as 5th Grade Teacher as of December 15, 2017.
  • It is with regret that I submit my letter of resignation as a Physics Teacher at the end of the fall term.

Resist the urge to include information about your time at the school or future career plans. You’ve probably already discussed these with your principal, so there is no reason to reiterate them here. Many teachers resign and then consider alternative career choices for teachers to concentrate fully on their next career.

However, you may want to mention that you enjoyed being an active member of the school community and teaching the students. You want to leave on good terms, which is paramount because it’s professional, and you may need an employment reference. To help with this, thank your principal for the opportunity, even if you are ecstatic to be leaving.

Give Proper Notice

Even though you are breaking your teaching contract early, it is still vital that you try to provide your school administrator with as much notice as possible. This can go a long way to ensuring you don’t burn any bridges with the school. Finding a suitable replacement in the middle of the school year can be challenging, so consider this. Don’t put off telling your principal the news of your departure.

Giving as much notice as possible (never provide less than two weeks) will help your students and principal transition from your absence more easily. Also, remember to state your last day of employment so there is no confusion.

Should You List a Reason for Leaving?

Listing a reason for your resignation is not necessary. Do not use the resignation letter as a time to vent your frustration. Your employer probably already knows your reasons for wishing to leave – so there is no need to reiterate them here. Be straightforward and to the point, “I am resigning.” You do not have to say, “I am resigning because…”. Although your reason is unrelated to the school, you may include a short explanation.

If you do choose to include a short explanation, here are a few examples of options to choose from:

  • I was recently offered a new opportunity at a school closer to my home and have decided to accept.
  • I received an offer to serve in an administrative position, and although I’m sad to leave this school community, I’m excited about this opportunity to transition into school administration .
  • This letter informs you that I will retire at the end of the school year.
  • After much thought and consideration, I have decided not to return after maternity leave.
  • I have decided to resign for personal reasons.

Show Professionalism

When an individual decides to leave, it may be because they are unhappy, disgruntled, and dissatisfied with their current employment . Don’t let a damaging attitude shine in your teacher’s resignation letter. Use only positive, professional language when composing the message.

If your supervisor at the school has done something to upset you, remember there is no point in stooping to a low level and sacrificing your professionalism to get the temporary gratification of complaining.

You should also show your willingness to help with the transition. Without promising anything, you may not be able to deliver; indicate that you’re happy to ensure a smooth transition for the students and the replacement teacher. Here are a couple of examples:

  • If I can assist during this transition, I’d be happy to help.
  • I would be happy to help with the transition so that the school and my students will continue to thrive after my departure.

Know the Consequences of Resigning

Resigning from a teaching job mid-contract could look bad to future employers. They will logically conclude that you could do it again if you have vacated one contract before completion.

Do you need to take action steps to revitalize your education career ?

Make sure you think carefully about your resignation before you follow through with your plan.

Are you so unhappy with your current position that you are willing to risk future employment opportunities as a teacher?

While nothing can magically make resigning from a teaching job easy, following these tips will help make the task as painless as possible and ensure your teaching career does not suffer.

6 Tips for Writing A Teacher Resignation Letter To A Principal.

Writing a teacher resignation letter to a principle isn’t always fun, but it’s a necessary step as you prepare to leave the classroom. Whether you’re breaking your teacher contract or leaving at the year’s end, you’ll need to submit an official letter of resignation. In many careers, giving your two-week notice is standard practice when you’re leaving your position. However, when it comes to leaving teaching, (unfortunately) it’s a little more complicated. Why? Teacher contracts. Teacher contracts are binding agreements between a teacher and a school district, outline the terms of employment. I always recommend waiting to resign from your current position until the end of the year if you can. However, if you know you cannot wait until the year’s end, I highly urge you to read my post about breaking teacher contracts . Writing your teacher resignation letter is the most formal way to notify admin of your intention to break your contract.

If you need help leaving the classroom, check out the  Teacher Career Coach Cours e .  This step-by-step guide has helped thousands with a transition from teaching. Save time and get support with every step of picking a new path, rewriting your resume, and answering tricky interview questions.

And who knows? Maybe reading this post will give you the push you need to take the next step toward the future you want.

Reasons For Writing A Teacher Resignation Letter.

Although teachers resigning from a position isn’t something schools want to see happen, more and more teachers are facing this reality. Whether it’s due to a toxic work environment, teacher burnout, mental or physical concerns, an offer for a new position, or other personal reasons, there are times where teachers cannot fulfill their remaining contract.

Other times, they must back out of a contract they already signed for the upcoming year. If any of those situations resonate with you, you likely need to start considering writing your teacher resignation letter. Regardless of why you’re resigning, my biggest piece of advice is to do so without burning bridges. (If possible.) I know this can be easier said than done. Keep reading to learn some of my top tips for keeping it short and professional. You’ll even find some templates you can plug into your very own teacher resignation letter.

Tips For Writing A Teacher Resignation Letter To Your Principal

Teacher resignation letters can be particularly challenging to write for many reasons. In some cases, you’re simply unsure what to include. What should you say? How much information is too much? In other cases, you may be tempted to air out your grievances. (Which, like I mentioned, I suggest you don’t do just in case.)

It’s essential to take care and consideration when writing your teacher resignation letter as it may impact your professional relationships and any remaining time at the school, whether it’s another few weeks or the rest of the year.

So, what should you consider when writing your teacher resignation letter?

Teacher Resignation To Principal Letter Tip 1: Remain Professional.

Whether you’re looking to remain in the field of education or not, I always urge against burning bridges throughout this process.

Personally, I was working in a highly toxic environment during my last years teaching. If you can relate, please hear me when I say I know it’s easier said than done to keep disgruntled thoughts out of your letter sometimes. Now, you definitely don’t have to be over the top nice. But the truth is, you learn something from every experience, good or bad. So rather than being negative, consider keeping it professional with one of these simple sentiments:

  • I’ve learned so much during my time at [SCHOOL NAME].
  • Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the [SCHOOL NAME] community.
  • I’m grateful for my time at [SCHOOL NAME].

Remember, a resignation letter is a big step moving forward. It’s not a place to state your concerns or complaints. I am certain you had voiced concerns prior to leaving, and your action of resigning should speak louder than words. Therefore, steer clear of any negative tones or accusatory language, regardless of how you may feel about your administration, district, or overall experience. While it may be difficult (like it was for me), the best thing you can do to be the bigger person is to maintain your professionalism as you move on in your life.

Teacher Resignation To Principal Letter Tip 2: Be Concise.

You want to keep your teacher resignation letter to your principle short and sweet. There is no need to ramble on about all the reasons you’re leaving. (More on that below.) Instead, keep it to the facts. Most importantly, you want to state your full legal name and the fact that you are resigning. You’ll also want to be sure to indicate when your last official day will be. If you’re not exactly sure how to keep it so concise, consider borrowing one of these templates:

  • I write this letter to officially submit my resignation as [INSERT TITLE] at [INSERT SCHOOL NAME] effective as of [INSERT DATE].
  • Please accept my resignation from my position as [INSERT TITLE] at [INSERT SCHOOL NAME] as of [INSERT DATE].
  • I, [NAME], request to officially resign as [INSERT TITLE] at [INSERT SCHOOL NAME], effective [INSERT DATE].

While it might be tempting to include further details about your experience or future plants, less is more. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t mention a line about something you enjoyed about the school, community, or students—even if you are thrilled to resign.

  • I’m grateful for the [X] years I spent helping the students here learn and grow.
  • It was a pleasure to serve as [LIST ANY POSITIONS YOU HELD] during the past [X] years at [SCHOOL NAME].
  • I am thankful to have spent [X] years with the incredible staff, supportive administration, and inspiring students at [SCHOOL NAME].

Teacher Resignation Letter Tip 3: Keep The Details to a Minimum.

A big question surrounding writing a teacher resignation letter is, “Should I tell them why I’m leaving?” Technically, you are not legally required to disclose the reason behind your resignation.  If you are pursuing a new career, I suggest leaving out any details about any offers or a new position. It’s likely that your employer already knows your reason for leaving, especially if you have a good relationship with your admin and discussed your decision beforehand. There is no need to reiterate any of these details in this letter.

It’s also important to note that not everyone leaving teaching had a negative experience. In some cases, the job simply no longer serves them. So, if you truly enjoyed your time in the classroom, you most certainly can include a brief explanation. However, I suggest keeping it to 1-2 sentences. Try one of these templates:

  • I recently decided to accept an offer closer to home. I appreciate your understanding as this is the best option for me and my family.
  • I have received an offer in a new position and, while I’m sad to be closing this chapter, I am excited to apply the experiences I’ve had to this exciting new opportunity.
  • After much thought and consideration, I have decided to resign from my position as [POSITION TITLE] for personal reasons.

Teacher Resignation Letter Tip 4: Give Proper Notice.

Whether you are ending a teaching contract early or backing out of a contract for the upcoming year, you want to give the school proper notice. If you are leaving mid-year, try to give admin enough time to find a suitable replacement. I understand some situations might be more time-sensitive than others, so aim for a minimum of the standard two-week rule if possible. This will help the admin, other teachers, and the students with a smoother transition. I know a lot of anxieties can surface when it comes to making your decision known, but you just have to remind yourself that this is the right thing for you . And while you want to tell your principal and admin first, it’s normal to want to break the news to your students and, in some cases, their parents as well. However, I suggest checking in with administration before formally reaching out to parents. Some schools may want an official replacement before any announcements are made.

Teacher Resignation Letter Tip 5: Know The Rules.

Before officially sending your resignation letter, be sure to know the steps required by your contract. Some districts may require you to submit your letter to HR or the superintendent. Others might have the principal handle it. Regardless, teacher contracts usually have specific “rules” regarding resignation. Before moving forward, be sure to thoroughly review your contract—or ask a union rep for help. The last thing I’d want is for you to be blindsided by something you could have prepared for.

BONUS TIP: Have A Conversation Face-to-Face.

I don’t know many people who actually enjoy confrontation or having a difficult conversation. However, it’s a necessary life skill. Besides, if you have a good relationship with your principal, they deserve a face-to-face conversation rather than just receiving a letter. If you don’t know what to say, you can follow the same guidelines mentioned above. Moreover, you can thank them for all they’ve done for you. You can even consider asking how you can assist through the transitional period.

I encourage you to schedule this meeting even if you don’t always see eye-to-eye with your admin. Yes, this is going to be an emotional conversation. However, remember to air on the side of professionalism. If you don’t think you can keep it polite, I totally understand. But again, you don’t want to burn any bridges. So, just keep it short and concise if needed. You simply never know who knows who, when you may need a reference, or if you’ll need to reach out to your network in the future. This is an opportunity to practice difficult conversations in a professional environment, a skill that can help you as your career your progresses outside of the classroom.

Resigning From Teaching Can Bring Up A Lot Of Emotions.

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed by a flood of emotion when writing and/or delivering your teacher resignation letter. It’s important that you acknowledge and work through these emotions. However, it’s also important to remember there’s a reason why you’re resigning in the first place.

Chances are, you’ve put a lot of thought into your decision to take this leap and leave the classroom. Yes, writing a teacher resignation letter and even discussing your resignation with colleagues can evoke a variety of emotions. You may feel teacher guilt over leaving your students, but this is where you need to remind yourself that it’s okay to be selfish here. Trust me. Your students will be okay. You might have guilt around leaving your coworkers and adding more to their plates. Again, you have to remember you are only in control of your situation. And you are doing the right thing for yourself. As far as the overwhelm, stigma, and uncertainty you might face as you face a new chapter, try to focus on the exciting opportunities ahead. And the best part? You don’t have to face these feelings alone. In fact, you don’t have to navigate your career transition alone either.

Whether you’re resigning due to health reasons, a new career opportunity or family obligations, it’s important to write a well-thought-out resignation letter that will leave a positive impression on your colleagues and administrators. Here are the best ways to structure your resignation letter for education purpose.

1. Begin with a formal salutation: Address your resignation letter to your immediate supervisor or principal, using their proper title and name. Start with a formal greeting, such as “Dear Principal Johnson.”

2. Express gratitude: Express your gratitude for the opportunity to work in the education field. Mention how much you have enjoyed your time at the school district and how much you have learned over the years. Express your appreciation for the colleagues and students who have enriched your experience.

3. Share your reason for resigning: Your reason for resigning could be due to a variety of reasons, such as health, career change or family obligations. Keep your explanation brief, professional and to the point. Avoid using negative statements or making accusations in your letter, even if you’re dissatisfied with something at the school district.

5. Close the letter on a positive note: Close your letter with a positive statement, expressing your hope for the future success of the school district. Thank your supervisor and colleagues for their support and collaboration throughout your tenure in the school.

6. Proofread for Grammar and Spelling errors: Before sending your resignation letter, ensure that it does not contain any grammar and spelling errors. It is important to maintain a professional tone throughout your letter, and grammatical errors may detract from its effectiveness.

In conclusion, resigning from a job in the education field can be challenging, but by following these structure guidelines, you can write a sincere and professional resignation letter that leaves a positive impression on your colleagues and administrators. Tips for Writing a Resignation Letter for Education Purpose

Resigning from a teaching position can be a tough decision and it can be even more challenging to write a resignation letter. Here are some tips to help you write a resignation letter with grace and professionalism.

Firstly, start by stating your intentions. Let your employer know that you are resigning and provide the date of your last working day. This should be the first sentence of your letter. Be clear and concise in your statement to avoid any confusion.

Secondly, thank your employer and colleagues for the opportunities and support they have provided you throughout your tenure at the organization. You can express your gratitude for the experience, knowledge, and guidance you received from your colleagues and employer.

Next, offer to help in the transition process. You may offer to help in finding or training your replacement teacher or organize classroom materials for the incoming teacher. Your willingness to help will show your professionalism and dedication to the school.

Fourthly, mention the reason for your resignation. If you are leaving for personal or professional reasons, it is acceptable to state the reason without going into too much detail. Keep it brief and positive. Avoid mentioning any negative experiences or grievances as it could reflect poorly on yourself and the school.

Lastly, provide your contact information and a final thank you. Provide your phone number or email address to stay in touch with the school and your colleagues. End the letter with a final thank you and express your best wishes for the school’s future success.

Remember, a resignation letter is an official document and should be professional and formal. Keep it neutral and positive, avoiding any negative comments or emotions.

How to write a good resignation letter & key notice dates for teachers.

how to write a resignation letter education

If you are thinking of looking for a new teaching role in September, you may be thinking of handing your notice in now before the end of May deadline. Typically, teachers are expected to provide three months’ notice if they intend to leave at the end of the summer term.

Most publicly funded schools in England follow the provisions set out in the Burgundy Book – Conditions of Service for Teachers in England and Wales, which specifies the notice periods required for teachers in local authority maintained schools.

This means there are three key dates you would be expected to give your resignation if you wish to leave your teaching job. They are:

  • To leave on 31st December, give notice by no later than 31st October
  • To leave on 30th April, give notice no later than 28th February
  • To leave on 31st August, give notice no later than 31st May

With this said, your contract of employment will include details on the amount of notice you are expected to give when leaving your post. So it is worth checking your contract carefully, but as a rule to leave at the end of the summer term, you should resign by the end of May.

What to include in your resignation letter

Whether a printed letter or email, it is common practice to submit your notice in writing. While email is legally sufficient, it is better to write a letter as it is more formal and professional. We also recommend keeping a copy of the letter to avoid any discrepancies that may crop up regarding when you notified your employer you wish to resign.

Crucial elements to include in your resignation letter include:

  • Your final date of employment along with when your notice will take effect
  • Your final date of attendance as your notice period may include school holidays
  • Confirmation of the date you handed your notice in
  • Thank the school for the support and opportunity they have given you
  • You may want to give details of the reason you are resigning
  • It is good practice to say what post you will be going to and to wish the headteacher and school all the best for the future

Who to address your resignation letter to

Unless otherwise stipulated in your contract of employment, your resignation letter should be addressed to your headteacher or principal. However, for headteachers and principles resignation letters should be addressed to the chair of governors or to the person stated in your contract.

What are the rules for independent schools and academies and free schools?

While some independent schools, academies and free schools may not adhere to the Burgundy Book, the vast majority do. If however they do not, check your contract for guidance on notice periods and the person who should receive your resignation letter to ensure you are not in breach of contract.

Teacher Resignation Letter

Whatever your reason for quitting a job, you will always have to write a resignation letter. Your school might already be aware that you’re moving on because you’ve been applying for jobs or because you're moving away. However, from a legal point of view, it isn’t over until that resignation letter is written, so how do you get it right?

There is no reason for a resignation letter to be a painful or emotional task, and this guide will talk you through everything you need to know.

  • Find the latest resignation dates and notice period
  • Why teachers stay put: the psychology of changing jobs
  • How to fit in fast when teaching at a new school

Resignation dates

Resignation dates restrict teachers in terms of when they can hand in their notice. James Bowen, director of NAHT Edge, the union for middle leaders, says that if you are having an interview for a new role, then check what your expected start date will be.

“The first thing to be aware of is the dates and deadlines for when you can hand in your resignation. Anybody going for an interview will need to be aware of when they are.”

  • Learn more about resignation dates

If you are leaving to take up a new position in a different school, it’s good practice to get your resignation in as soon as you have signed your contract with the new school, Bowen explains. “While you have no obligation to hand in your resignation before the deadline, your current school will appreciate it if you do so at the earliest opportunity.

“It is also always good to have a face-to-face meeting with your line manager first rather than go in cold with something in writing.”

How to resign?

Resignations should be a short letter and hand delivered to the headteacher. If you are moving to a different school, then your headteacher would be aware you were thinking of leaving because you would have been attending interviews, and they would have written a reference for you. If you are leaving for another reason, it would be a good idea to let them know verbally before you hand in your letter.

Sometimes, the timings of interviews and resignation dates can make this difficult. Malcolm Trobe, former deputy general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, explains: “If you are on an interview on the last date for resigning, then you should have a conversation with the headteacher and make arrangements to speak with them as soon as you know the outcome, and submit your resignation electronically if necessary.”

While resigning may seems as if it presents the opportunity to finally give that headteacher you’ve disagreed with over the years a piece of your mind, the resignation letter is absolutely not the place to do it.

Bowen recommends remaining professional: “It is important to remembering to handle yourself professionally throughout the resignation process and after. For example, this is unlikely to be the best time to start airing a range of historical grievances.”

Instead, ask for an exit interview, and express any serious concerns you have in a professional and calm way.

  • Learn how to handle your leadership resignation

What should be in a resignation letter?

This is the crucial part, where you have to make sure you have all bases covered for what needs to be in the letter.

Trobe explains: “It is important to make clear in the resignation letter what will be your final date of employment. You may need to seek clarification of what this will be if you are leaving at Easter because of the moveable nature of the spring term end and summer term start.

“You would usually thank the school for the support that you have been given in your time there and you may wish to name people who have been particularly helpful to you. It is polite to say what post you are going to, and to wish the headteacher and the school well for the future.”

Example resignation letter

Here is an example resignation letter by forum contributor Theo Griff:

                                                                                                  Date

Dear Mr Smith

Resignation from post of teacher at Grungy Green School

I wish to confirm that I am resigning my post of teacher at Grungy Green School with effect from 1 September 2018.  My last date of employment will thus be 31 August 2019, and my last date of attendance will be (put in date of last day of term).

I would like to thank you and the rest of the teachers at Grungy Green School for the support that you have given me throughout my time here. I have enjoyed working as a part of this team, and appreciate the opportunities that I have had for personal and professional development. I shall ensure that my remaining time working with the students of Grungy Green School will be as successful as the earlier terms.

Yours sincerely,

ANO Teacher

Is an email enough?

While an email is legally sufficient, a letter is best practice, Trobe explains: “Although an email will legally cover your resignation, it is best to give a physical letter. I would recommend following up an email with a written version if you have to use an email to legally cover yourself, eg, resigning on the final day when you are geographically distant.”

Plan a Resignation Meeting

Plan your letter submission, talk with your manager, inform your coworkers, acceptance of resignation, exit interview, knowledge transfer, return of company property, settlement of finances, farewell of the employee, do employers have to accept a resignation letter, when should you submit a letter of resignation, why do we require a resignation letter, what not to include in a resignation letter, can i withdraw my resignation letter, what do i include in a professional resignation letter, what are the types of subject lines in resignation letter.

The decision to leave a job can be challenging, as many personal and professional factors must be considered. There comes a moment when you must inform your boss that you’re leaving the job. Unlike an informal resignation, which is apologetic at the very least in tone, a resignation letter clearly expresses the writer’s intention. Thus, it helps keep the tone of leave respectful.

A resignation letter formally notifies an organization of an employee’s decision to leave their position. Some companies require it as per employment contracts, while others view it as professional courtesy. This letter documents the employee’s voluntary departure from the company.

This article provides comprehensive guidelines, samples, and tips for writing a resignation letter. It aims to help you handle your resignation process with professionalism and clarity.

(name of the employee)

A resignation letter is a formal communication that provides formal notice to an employer of an employee’s wish to resign. The document may state the employee’s last day at work and offer help during the transition. You might also use the letter to thank the employer for any opportunities provided, or support extended and to let you stay in touch. Usually, the employer’s response to the employee’s resignation is positive. However, it may depend on various factors.

According to Statista data, the attrition rate in India in 2023 was 18.7% . Resignation letters grant the employer time to find a replacement. If you do choose to provide a resignation, evaluate the impressions you will leave behind when you exit.

Writing a resignation letter is straightforward. In India, the resignation rate in 2023 was 18.7%. A resignation letter typically includes a date, a brief greeting, the main content, and your signature. While it may seem unnecessary to write a resignation letter, doing so helps keep things formal and acts as proof of your resignation.

How Do You Write a Professional Resignation Letter?

resignation letter format

1. Begin With The Correct Greeting

Please address your letter to the current supervisor or manager. Use their name and formal title, such as “Dear Mr. XYZ” or “Dear Dr. William.”

2. State Your Reason For Resigning

In the first paragraph, clearly state that you are retiring from your position. Be straightforward and to the point.

3. Write The Last Working Date

In the same paragraph, include the date of your last working day. This will allow your employer time to look for substitutes or make other arrangements.

4. Offer To Help The Employer

In the following paragraph, volunteer to assist with the transfer process. It may include training a colleague to take your place or ensuring the projects you are working on are finished. This shows your company you want the transition to go as quickly as possible.

5. Make Sure To Thank Your Employer

In your last paragraph, thank your employer for allowing you to work with the company. You may also write about any beyond-belief-positive experiences or opportunities you got while working there.

6. End With A Professional Sign-Off

Give the letter a professional sign-off with suitable pauses from “Sincerely” to Best regards, and conclude by placing your signature below the signature line.

7. Proofread And Modify

Before sending the letter, carefully check for language and spelling issues. Ensure the tone is professional and there are no typos or errors.

8. Deliver The Letter

Print the letter and submit it in person to your supervisor or manager. If that is not possible, send it to them via email and then call to confirm receipt.

What should be Included and not Included in a Resignation Letter?

Maintaining a professional tone in your resignation letter will help you maintain a strong relationship with your employer after you leave your position.

If you had a pleasant experience with your employer or coworkers, you should express your gratitude in your letter. Take the time to mention the opportunities and experiences they gave you while employed.

These letters are often simple documents that communicate critical information, such as your decision to resign and the date of your final day of work. This might help to create clear intentions and courteous communication.

When you provide a proper letter of resignation, you show consideration for what transpired in making that decision and let your future company know you’ve given thought to your exit. Henceforth, carefully reviewing your resignation letter can be helpful.

It is recommended to avoid providing a lengthy explanation for why you have decided to leave your position. A straightforward, professional justification is sufficient.

Just as much as it is essential to maintain a serious and objective approach to stating your parting notice, you have to refrain from making slanders on the side of the firm, the team, or anything that shows dissatisfaction.

Be explicit about your last work day and provide sufficient information about any outstanding tasks. You want to make the transfer as smooth as possible for your employer.

The type of offer you are resigning from, the duration you have worked there, and the reason for your resignation can influence the style of the letter you draft. Looking for a resignation letter example may be helpful for consideration.

This information can be helpful if you have any questions or concerns in the future, and it is an excellent document to keep for your records. This can contain documents such as proof of your notice period , information about your final salary or incentives, and any agreements or commitments made by your company.

Tips to Write a Proper Resignation Letter

Write in plain language, and keep the body of your letter to two or three brief paragraphs. Only include the essential information. A personal meeting with your manager or an exit interview can provide opportunities for in-depth conversations.

Use courteous, professional language. Be considerate of your company. Maintain a cheerful attitude, especially when discussing your reason for resignation and your experiences with the organization.

Make it a Professional Look

Use professional fonts rather than beautiful ones. Use points with single spacing. Reduce text decorations like bold, italic, underlining, and color highlights.

Consider scheduling a closed-door meeting with your manager before you submit your resignation. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and ensures that your departure does not surprise your manager.

Please submit your resignation well in advance. This will give your employer extra time and ensure that you stay within the required notice period.

Follow your manager’s directions during the transition. Complete the pending duties assigned by your management. You may also need to train someone to take over your role.

Please notify your coworkers of your resignation and send them a farewell email. Your manager can also advise you on this.

What Happens Post-Resignation?

The resignation procedure varies according to the company’s policies and the employee’s position. However, several general steps are typically followed:

The initial stage is to accept the employee’s resignation. The manager or HR representative should accept the resignation and confirm the employee’s last working day.

An exit interview is conducted to determine the cause of the employee’s resignation and solicit input on the company’s policies and work culture. This feedback can be used to improve the working conditions for the remaining staff.

Employees should give their tasks to their coworkers or those who will take over their role. This is known as knowledge transfer in the organization. This assures that the job is unaffected by the employee’s leave.

Before leaving the company, the employee should return all company property, which includes a laptop, ID card, and other equipment.

Employees’ dues, such as salaries, bonuses, and other benefits, should be paid before they leave the organization.

The employee should be appreciated for their contributions to the company.

In your resignation letter, you must express clear intention about leaving; therefore, it will eliminate all doubts and miscommunication. A resignation letter is an opportunity to briefly explain the reasons for the resignation. Keep the facts you offer general, avoiding going into depth regarding your leave or voicing dissatisfaction.

Be courteous in your resignation notice, regardless of your role. Mention why you’re leaving and be explicit about who you’re informing. Appreciation and support at your departure go a long way with employers, and you don’t want to leave the firm on a sour note—even if you’re leaving for terrible reasons.

Drawing inspiration from these letter of resignation samples and templates will help you maintain your professional network as you go on your next adventure. To effectively manage all your employees joining and resigning, schedule a demo of the factoHR employee management tool.

In most situations, an employer cannot decline a resignation. Most countries have employment regulations stating that an employer must accept a resignation. The only time a resignation can be rejected is if the employee does not provide enough notice in their letter for resigning or violates their employment contract in some way.

You should draft a letter of resignation at least two weeks in advance, but if your contract requires it or you have a lot of work to do before leaving, you may need to give your boss more notice.

It is a formal letter you and your employer can use to record the day you gave notice. This lets you track when you notified your employer of your departure plan. Consider preserving a copy of your letter for your records.

Statement of resignation and the date of your last day. Paragraph expressing gratitude for the opportunity. A few sentences describing your desire to assist with the training and transfer process. Professional sign-off and signature. Avoid lengthy details, informal tone, indirect dissatisfaction regarding the company, and too many personal details.

If you change your mind about leaving your current employment, you can ask your employer to overlook your resignation letter. Some grounds for withdrawing a resignation letter include a retracted fresh job offer or a partner no longer needing to relocate for their employment.

Twenty-six aldermen on the Chicago City Council are calling for Rev. Mitchell Johnson to resign from his position as president of the Chicago Board of Education due to his lengthy history of making antisemitic remarks online.

“We call on Rev. Johnson to apologize and step down from his position immediately,” the 26 aldermen, representing more than half of the body’s members, wrote in a joint letter . “The thousands of Jewish families who send their kids to Chicago Public Schools deserve representation who values them and does not express hate towards the Jewish community.” Johnson’s comments, including a statement saying his “Jewish colleagues appear drunk with the Israeli power,” were first reported in Jewish Insider .

Johnson did not respond to a request for comment. But on Tuesday evening, soon after the report was published, he went on Facebook to share a quote indicating he will not apologize and that he does not regret writing the antisemitic posts: “I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence,” the post said, attributing the quote to abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

The 26 aldermen calling for Johnson’s resignation called the situation “a failure of leadership and judgment on the part of Mayor [Brandon] Johnson and his executive team.” Mayor Johnson — who appointed Rev. Johnson to the role in early October amid a leadership crisis at the school board — “told reporters his appointees would be thoroughly vetted before they were sworn in. It was clear that did not take place,” the aldermen wrote.

“His continued role on the school board is non-negotiable. Both he and Mayor Johnson must act now to correct this terrible mistake,” wrote the aldermen, including Debra Silverstein, the city’s lone Jewish alderman.

Mayor Johnson’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment from JI. He has not weighed in on Rev. Johnson’s antisemitic posts.

Silverstein told JI on Wednesday that she has not heard from Mayor Johnson, nor did his office acknowledge receiving the letter.

“I’m appalled, and I’m still wondering how he managed to get through the vetting process. That’s a question that I have for the mayor’s office,” Silverstein said. “I would really hope that [Mayor Johnson] asks him to resign. I don’t know if he will do that or not, but he definitely should.”

Silverstein has publicly stated that Mayor Johnson needs to work harder to engage the Jewish community and meet their needs, and she stood by that assessment.

“The mayor has a lot of fences to mend with the Jewish community, because right now we’re scared and we don’t feel safe,” said Silverstein. “He hasn’t taken any actions to do that as of yet.”
