Company Summary

The company summary is exactly what it sounds like—a summary of your company. This part of your business plan will outline the following:

  • Company Owner. How much experience and training does your founder have in plumbing and related industries?
  • Company Startup. How much will you need to spend to get your company off the ground?
  • Company Services. What specific services will your company provide? This might include gas plumbing, hot water system installation, and piping services, for example.

Market Summary

This is the section of your business plan in which you’ll explain your market. 

For our example above, Perfect-Time Plumbing would detail how many households and small businesses are in Nearby Town. They’d also list where they’re located and what percentage of customers would need their different services. 

This is where you’ll specify whether you’ll serve residential or commercial clients or both. And it’s your chance to outline what competitive advantage you’ll use to stand out. For example, offering lower prices or 24/7 customer service.

Your business plan will also look at how many customers you expect to have going forward. Include market size estimates for each year for at least the next five years, illustrating your company’s vision for growth.

First and foremost, your Company’s name should be included on the business plan cover page. This should be the most prominent feature of the cover page, and as such, is traditionally in the largest font setting. Immediately, the reader should know the name of your company.

2. Company Logo and Color Scheme

The best business plan covers are those that look like they are of professional quality. This can be accomplished by including a high-quality image of the company logo and the font type and color scheme for the company’s marketing materials. Like a book cover, a business plan cover page is intended to draw the reader’s attention immediately. Plans with an unattractive cover page can fall victim to incorrect preconceived notions.

3. Title and Date

When was this plan written? Readers need to know, so include the date (month and year are enough).

And what is it? The cover page should state if this is a Business Plan, Executive Summary, or Financial Projections. So, at this point, your business plan cover page may read as follows:

Note that the title and date should be featured less prominently than your company name.

4. Less is More

Your business plan executive summary will summarize the contents of the plan. There is no need for the cover page to do so, as well. It is also inadvisable to create a business plan cover that is so graphically busy that the information is difficult to discern. Simple, clean, and powerful are the three goals of a strong business plan cover page.

5. CEO/Owner/Key Contact Information

Who should the reader contact if they wish to know more information? The name and contact information for the CEO, President, Owner, or another key contact should not be located at the end of the document. It should be on the first page, letting the reader know who is presenting the document.

6. Confidentiality Statement

While it is not essential, you may want to include a Confidentiality Statement on your cover, such as the following:

This document includes confidential and proprietary information of and regarding [Company Name]. This document is provided for informational purposes only. You may not use this document except for informational purposes, and you may not reproduce this document in whole or in part or divulge any of its contents without the prior written consent of [Company Name]. By accepting this document, you agree to be bound by these restrictions and limitations.

When you buy a homeowners insurance policy, you expect it to cover certain catastrophic events — including burst pipes. But what about other plumbing problems?

Home insurance doesn’t usually cover plumbing issues that result from needed maintenance and repairs. Instead, homeowners insurance covers plumbing issues that stem from accidents or some other unexpected and rapidly developing event.

When does homeowners insurance not cover plumbing damage?

First, it’s important to understand the difference between sudden damage and the need to stay current on maintenance and repairs.

If your kitchen sink has a small leak in one of the pipes, you’re expected to either repair the leak yourself or hire a professional. Your homeowners insurance policy probably won’t cover the cost of the repair.

If you don’t repair the leak, water damage might occur over a few weeks or months. However, even in this situation, your home insurance might not cover it because the damage was caused by a slow leak that you, as the homeowner, were responsible for repairing — but didn’t.

Additionally, if the plumbing problem is in an obvious area that’s known to you and you don’t take care of it, the damage won’t be covered.
