And honesty is key because most consumers and clients won‘t invest in someone or something if it doesn’t seem trustworthy. In fact, 67% of consumers say they must trust a brand before investing in its products or services.

Values and Work Approach

Speaking in the first person here connects you with a client or brand based on your experience and opinions. Put another way, writing a first-person bio is like telling your story to your audience.

Here are a few tips to make your first-person bio great:

Don’t start every sentence with "I."

Showing instead of telling is a great approach.

Let’s say you’re a writer who wants to create a short professional bio. Instead of saying, "I love to write," you can say, "Writer. Bad but enthusiastic dancer."

For instance, when you write a third-person bio, you may start with:

By only using your name and pronouns to speak about yourself here, you are letting your title and skill set speak for themselves.

These bios create distance between the subject of the bio (you) and the reader through a third person. This person could be anyone, but they usually speak in a tone emphasizing their expertise.

If you’re anything like me, you probably don't think about your professional bio until you’re asked to "send one over via email."

You have one afternoon to come up with it, so you scramble together a bio that ends up reading like this:

"Rodney Erickson is a content marketing professional at HubSpot, a CRM platform that helps companies attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.

Previously, Rodney worked as a marketing manager for a tech software startup. He graduated with honors from Columbia University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Creative Writing."

To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.

Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.

1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.

You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):

As you'll see in the professional bio examples below, the length and tone of your bio will differ depending on the platforms you use.

Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.

2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.

If your readers remember nothing else about your bio, they should remember your name. Therefore, it's a good idea for your first and last name to be the first two words of your professional bio.

Even if your name is printed above this bio (hint: it should), this is a rare moment where it's okay to be redundant.

For example, if I were writing my bio, I might start it like this:

3. Mention any associated brand name you might use.

Will your professional bio represent you or a business you work for? Ensure you mention the brand you associate with in your bio. If you're a freelancer, you may have a personal business name or pseudonym you advertise to your clients.

Here are a few examples:

  • Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).

Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."

4. State your current position and what you do.

Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the following few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Refrain from assuming your audience knows what your job title entails.

The second is the "long version," which is even more interesting than the first. Why? It reads like a story — a compelling one, at that. In fact, it gets hilarious in some parts.

The second sentence of the bio reads: "He was frightened of public school, loved playing baseball and football, ran home to watch ape films on the 4:30 Movie, listened to The Jam and The Buzzcocks, and read magic trick books."

Here's another excerpt from the middle:

I wouldn‘t necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that’s something I can get behind.

Last, he ends on a humble, sweet note: "He is happiest with his wife Breanne raising their two sons." So inject personal information into your bio — it makes you seem approachable.

  • It highlights Chris’s achievement without bragging.
  • The last sentence portrays Chris as a responsible man who loves his family.
  • The well-written bio speaks to nature lovers who like the outdoors, surfing, and more. This gives them reasons to follow Chris.

Creative professionals who specialize in visual art may find it challenging to balance the writing of their bio and displaying of their portfolio. Not Lisa Quine. Lisa has an exceptional balance of her professional bio and creative work.

Throughout her bio, you'll notice the number of murals she's completed and a brief timeline of her career. This helps her paint the picture of who she is as a professional.

The rest of her bio similarly focuses on Twine's strengths as someone who’s able to take hair care "back to basics."

Mouzon effectively grips the reader's attention with this introduction and then dives into some of her impressive accomplishments — including a brand now sold at Urban Outfitters and Target.

The language used throughout Mouzon's bio is authentic, real, and honest.

For instance, in the second paragraph, she admits:

"While building a brand may have looked effortless from the outside, starting a business at age 23 with no resources or funding quickly forced me to realize that early-stage entrepreneurship was anything but transparent."

As an avid Zumba fan, I was excited to include this one. Perez styles his LinkedIn bio as a short story, starting with his background as a hard-working teen who held three jobs by age 14.

His bio tells the fun and fascinating origin story of Zumba, in which Perez, an aerobics teacher in Florida at the time, forgot his music for class and used a Latin music cassette tape instead ... "And it was an instant hit!"

  • Written in the third person, this bio has lots of proof (like followers), which shows Ann is a terrific marketing leader.

If you're posting a bio on a social media account or sending a quick blurb to a client, you want to keep it short and sweet while showcasing your accomplishments.

If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.

Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"

But that couldn't be further from the truth.

By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.

  • The bio is short and direct.
  • The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.

Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.

How to Write a Good Professional Bio

1. start with your name..

If you’re concerned about sounding redundant since your name will be printed above your bio, don’t be. This is one of the few occasions where it’s okay to be repetitious.

2. Mention your company’s name.

After your name, you want to mention your brand or company name. If your company has awards, this is a great place to mention them.

Something like this may seem very simple, but it’s effective. It tells people who you are and what you do right away.

3. Include details about what you do.

Use the next few lines of your bio to describe what you do as a small business owner.  

For example: “Jane Doe is the founder and CEO of Digital Resource, a three-time Inc. 5000-ranked digital marketing agency located in Florida. She is responsible for running all facets of the business, including sales. Doe has a proven executive management track record and over 20 years of entrepreneurial experience.”

Write down your primary responsibilities first, so your readers can visualize who you are during the day and what you have to offer in your niche.  

4. State at least one professional accomplishment.

To establish your experience, you want to mention what you have achieved in your professional career. This will serve as proof that you are who you say you are.

If you’re not sure what to write down, ask yourself this:

"What have I done for myself or for others that make me a valuable player in my niche?"

As the leading internet marketing company in Florida, we suggest that aside from your professional accomplishments, you should also mention your educational attainment, if you're involved in your community, and in what ways.

Here are some things to think about including:

  • Community and industry involvement: How do you show leadership outside the office? Do you participate in charitable activities?
  • Education: Where did you attend school? Do you have any academic honors, special training, or certifications?

5. Explain your values and how this guides the way you do business.

Values help build a sense of purpose in the workplace by empowering your employees to work on achieving a common goal.  

Some of the most common company values are those that are related to customer relationships, company growth, and business relationships. These are often translations of your very own values.  

For example, if one of your values is reliability, then your clients can expect that you and your employees will deliver work outcomes to agreed quality standards and timeframes.  

If you’re not sure what your values are, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • What is your vision for your company?
  • What gets you up in the morning?
  • What values do you and your employees share that will make your business a huge success?

6. Wrap your bio up by telling your readers who you are outside of work.

Give your readers a peek at who you are as a person by describing what you like to do when you're not working. This may include:

  • Spending time with family and pets.
  • Playing your favorite sports.
  • Doing hobbies or interests you love.  
  • Side hustles you’re working on.
  • Favorite food.

People like to connect with others . The more genuine you feel, the more likable you’ll seem.

Pique The Interest of your Readers

Starting your bio with your name is a great way to draw the attention of your readers and make them want to learn more about you.  

Using a conversational tone in your writing will also make it easy for readers to follow along.  

Tailor It to Your Intended Audience

To make your bio more compelling, you should first identify its purpose and who will be reading it.  

Is it for a publication? Marketing material? A proposal for a client?

Once you know the purpose of your bio, you can customize it as necessary.

For example, if it’s for a client, they’ll want to know more about your achievement and what makes you qualified to earn their trust.  

If it's for a magazine feature, they'll probably want more information about your personal life.  

Depending on your audience, your bio can be formal, funny, or personalized.  

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Vulnerable

People love authenticity . Show people your personal side by mentioning whether you’re married or not, your hobbies, favorite food, and so on.

Depending on the purpose of your bio, don't be afraid to give away a little information about your professional life.  

Update Your Bio

As time goes by, your experience and qualifications change. To reflect this progress, it’s important to update your bio every now and then.

How to Write a Business Owner Bio

All business owners should have a professional biography. You can use this biography to market yourself and your business, gain customer and client loyalty, attract investors to your business or utilize as part of your direct mail package. You can also include the information in your biography on your business's website. Before you sit down to write your professional biography, think carefully about your experience and how you want to present yourself and your business.

Create an attention-grabbing first paragraph. Your professional biography should be informative but also interesting. Start with an exceptional accomplishment or unique service you provide. For example, your first paragraph could start out with, "Tammy Smith, a Harvard-educated lawyer and recipient of the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award, takes a client-centered approach to her law practice."

Include your qualifications for running your business, your professional accomplishments and an overview of the services or products you offer in the professional biography. Try to use powerful and emotional language, such as "confident," "sympathetic," "optimistic" and "passionate." The words you choose should be positive, and used when describing your professional achievements. For example, "Tammy is passionate about upholding the law, and she remains confident that she can help her community grow and thrive, one client at a time." There's no need to overly describe your accomplishments, as long as you use language that demonstrates how much you love your work and how dedicated you are to your profession.

Add any other information that may be attractive to the reader, including awards, honors, education, certifications, licenses, significant clients, your business partners, your professional experience and associations you belong to. Never use acronyms. You want to make sure the reader understands all the information presented. This information should not be listed as in a resume. Instead, it should be weaved throughout the paragraphs of your biography. Include relevant information where it makes sense to the reader. For example, when describing why your clients trust you and your business, include information about your education, licenses and certifications. These credentials show that you are qualified to do the work. For this information to be effective in a business owner bio, it should be used to back up your credibility, qualifications and expertise in your field.

Include your contact information. List the address of your business, a phone number and an email address.

Avoid writing a professional biography that's more than one page. Short biographies are more likely to be read in full by clients, customers, partners, investors or website visitors.

Write the biography in third person. This is more professional, and because it appears to have been written by a third party, you can be less modest and describe your accomplishments without sounding like you're boasting.

How to Write a Business Bio that Stands Out

Whether you’re a business owner or working for someone else, you find yourself in need a business bio on the regular… .

It’s important to know how to write a business bio that shows who you are, what you do, and what sets you apart in a concise and memorable way. 

You may find yourself needing: 

  • A LinkedIn bio
  • A bio to be read at workshops and speaking engagements 
  • A bio for when you’re a podcast guest 
  • A bio for your About Page on your website 
  • A way to share about yourself on social media without feeling like you’re just blabbing on about yourself! 

Especially when you’re working to increase your visibility, the time will come when you need to write about yourself.

I know, it’s weird, right? 

This blog will help make it easier for you to write about yourself and show you how to write several versions of a business bio to help you shine as the magical human you are. 

To begin, let’s get into WHY it’s important to remind people of who you are and what you do. We have to talk about yourselves consistently, and in a way that’s clear, understandable, and creates a connection between us and who we’re sharing with. 

I have a connection online, a fellow service provider, who in my mind did one thing and one thing only. 

In my defense, she talks about this one thing often. She has it as her descriptor line on LinkedIn and Instagram. Recently, she reached out to me letting me know that if I came across people looking for XY-Zed, she could deliver. Now, this was actually quite helpful to me because I encounter people often that are looking for XY-Zed and I don’t offer it in a way that works for everyone all the time. I’m often looking for someplace to refer them too and this was helpful information for me. All this time, I THOUGHT she only did XY, I had no idea about the Zed piece. And I told her so. 

She realized she didn’t talk about the Zed piece anywhere online, and others were probably confused and didn’t know either! So, she re-introduced herself and made a commitment to do it more regularly. 

I was in the same boat recently too. Someone I hadn’t seen in awhile asked me what I was doing for a “living” ((I think she was under the illusion that I was only doing my podcast??)) and I had to spell it out for her that I’m a Content Copywriter . Honestly, not even sure my mom knows that, so I cut this friend some slack. But it sparked in ME a reminder to talk about myself and make a post about who I am and what I do . 

This is why it’s so important to talk about ourselves. 

It might feel uncomfortable to you but remember that people are busy and moving fast. They’re not always paying attention. We have to consistently remind them of who we are and what we do. It’s not annoying – it’s clear messaging. 

For some people, this may be their first encounter with us. They truly don’t KNOW us yet and we have to welcome them in and tell them who we are and what we do! 

Places to share a business bio and remind people of what you do: 

  • Your About page on your website
  • Your LinkedIn, Facebook Page, Instagram, and other social media bios 
  • Before you get brought on stage or on Zoom as a speaker
  • When you’re introducing yourself in a workshop
  • In podcast episodes you do on your own (solocasts)
  • In podcast episodes you’re a guest on 
  • In person at networking events, family parties, and on the sidelines at soccer games ((we’ll touch on that another time)) 

So how do you write a solid business bio? That talks about YOU in a comfortable way and takes into account who you’re talking to?

There’s no elaborate optin sequence to follow it and it’s not fancy yet. But I wanted to be sure you had it so you could get pen to paper and start writing your business bio ASAP))

The Number One Key to Writing a Business Bio is to Show You Care. 

Anytime we’re talking about ourselves – whether verbally or writing a business bio, we’re building a bridge. A bridge between who we’re talking to and ourselves. We create a connection when we give them a reason to care and also show that WE care about them too. 

Questions to Ask Before Writing Your Business Bio 

#1) What do you do? 

This seems like the easy part. And for some, this is an easy answer. (ie. “travel agent”, “writer”, “nutrition coach”, “website designer”, “painter”, etc.). Simple. My 8 year old nephew Max could understand and refer you. There are others who are majorly overcomplicating what you do or creating too much vaguery around it. 

Examples I’ve seen: Embodiment Guide, Authenticity Coach, Creative, Time Management Diva, Creator of Fun, Transformational Coach, etc. 

These are slightly hard to understand, because it’s just not that clear. In some instances, we don’t even know what the words mean, or they’re used so frequently they’ve lost their meaning. If what you do comes out along those lines, how can you clarify and simplify it just a tad bit? You can bring in the fun tagline later, but how can you say it in a way that even kid can understand what you do right away.

#2) Who do you work with? 

For this question, I want you to think about not just who you work with, but who you LOVE working with. You don’t need to nail down one single client avatar. ((I know that’s what you hear in many places)), but you can share your love in working for different types of people, at different times and in different ways. So for the purposes of this exercise, I’d list them all out. When you write your business bio, I’d recommend choosing one or two or creatively weaving them together with a common thread. 

For me, here are FOUR I speak to specifically because of common denominators I’ve identified: 

  • Interior Designers 
  • Website Designers  
  • Podcasters 
  • Women Entrepreneurs with service-based businesses 

I work with people outside those areas, but those are the four I most often speak to. 

Who do you work with? Who have been your favorite clients and WHY? 

#3) What do you do? 

Again with a caveat, let’s focus on what you most love to do. You don’t have to list all your services and you don’t have to list the ones you don’t particularly want to draw attention to. 

Rather than list out website copy, blog writing, social media content banks, welcome packets, business bios, etc. etc. etc. I often will simply say, “I take the writing in your business off your plate entirely!” or “I guide people in how to create content for themselves with simplicity and ease.” 

Just make sure to include the type of work you REALLY want. 

#4) What makes you unique and different? What sets you apart from others in your industry? 

Don’t let yourself sink into being generic here. Try not to lean too heavily on your extensive educational experience, but really think about what makes you different. 

  • Is it your process? 
  • Your focus on the numbers? 
  • Your strategic brain? 
  • Your empathy? 
  • Your intution? 
  • Your impeccable attention to detail? 

If you struggle to determine what sets you apart, look at what your clients say you they love about you in testimonials. 

Maybe your years of experience are a piece of what set you apart, maybe your education is beyond what others in your industry have, or the specific niche or the specific type of project you offer is something not many others do – weave that in too, but I do recommend looking at the human characteristics that set you apart from the noise. 

Even if you’re a “brand” you have human characteristics. 

#5) What gets you out of bed in the morning? 

Think beyond the coffee pot and too full bladder here. ((you might wanna’ sit with this one)) What really gets you excited for the day ahead? 

Here are some of my answers: 

CONNECTION with others and the natural world around me

The question, “WHAT CAN I LEARN TODAY?” 


My fingers twitching because they have no choice but to WRITE and CREATE 

WORD GAMES and puzzles and all the #brainnerdnerdbrainthings

The beautiful routine and JOY of my simple life

And of course, in addition to all of that, a full bladder and coffee.

What is it for you? Your kids? Clients?  

Time to put it together to write your business bio! 

We’ve answered our four questions: 

  • What do you do? 
  • Who do you work with? 
  • What do you like to do most in your business? 
  • What sets you apart? 
  • What gets you outta’ bed in the morning? 

You can start taking these answers and writing down your business bio messy and sloppy. Make it weird. Just get it down on paper. 

Then, you can tidy it up using these tips: 

  • With every version you create, pretend you’re writing your business bio for just one person. Speak to them directly. 
  • A few social posts
  • A 50-75 word version first person
  • A 150 word version first person
  • A 50-75 word version third person
  • A 150 word version third person
  • A “What Sets Me Apart” section with bulleted points 
  • Consider a hook, if you want. I’m not a wild fan of hooks, but I’ve seen some that are catchy. If that’s your style, go for it!
  • Add in a fun fact or two – what you do in your free time, any pets you have, etc. You can also share a boring fact if you’re life is devoid of fun ones. Something that humanizes you and makes you uniquely you. 
  • Be as specific as possible. The more specific you are the better. Don’t say “Everyone who…” or “Anyone who…”. Write in specifics.

Keep this reminder mind when writing your business bio: 

YOU are a one of a kind human and you work with other one of a kind humans. Writing a great bio and talking about yourself, bridges these two together in the very best of ways.

Are you a business owner who wants to share your expertise but is unsure of how to stand out in a crowded marketplace? Maybe you want to write a book or create a course but there’s still the matter of convincing people of why they should trust you. This is where a professional bio comes in.

When you are building a personal brand , every word you use matters. In this article, we’ll break down the parts of a professional bio, walk through the steps of creating one, and share some short bio examples.

What is a professional bio.

Your professional bio is a short, curated snapshot of your education, accomplishments, and career highlights. Similar to an author bio , it gives background information on why you are qualified to do what you do, but unlike an author bio that focuses only on a book, a professional bio is a broader take on who you are as a business owner and your brand.

The best professional bios are streamlined, highly focused, and targeted to your audience. They condense all of your years of experience and knowledge into a bite-sized snippet that you can share across various mass media outlets like your website, podcasts, social media, television interviews, and speaking engagements .

Creating a short bio that resonates with readers and doesn’t sound like a boring list of accomplishments may sound like a tall order, but it’s doable with the right template. 

How do you write a professional bio?

The challenge that many career professionals face when trying to write a short bio is that there’s so much information to sift through. What do you include? What do you leave out? When do you use generalities? When do you get specific?

Here are some basic steps for writing a professional bio. 

Gather the necessary information. Prewriting is a great way to pull everything together.

  • Start with your personal brand. Think specifically about your current offer and the products and services that you sell. Write those down.
  • Define your audience. As a business owner, you likely have an avatar or multiple avatars (marketing personas) of your ideal customer. Before writing your professional bio, you’ll need to know who will be reading it.
  • Know your why. Where are you in your career currently? Why is now the time to define your personal brand? Knowing this will help you develop the tone for your professional bio. You don’t want your bio to be static and boring. You want it to have personality, and knowing your why will help you create an engaging one.

In this article, we’re focusing on short bios, and one of the best ways to get to a short bio is to start with a longer one. It’s easier to subtract from a short one than to try to make a short bio longer. You’ll need different bio lengths for different purposes, and starting with the longest and narrowing it down to the shortest will help make the process more efficient.

Here’s how to build your main bio.

There are several ways to write a professional bio, but one of the easiest is to use the 5-paragraph structure that’s common in personal essays: introduction, body, and conclusion. 

Writing it in the third person is standard and often viewed as more formal and professional, but some opt for the first person which has a more casual feel. 

  • Introduction (1 paragraph) – This opening paragraph sets the stage for the rest of the bio. You can start from your childhood if it’s relevant or whatever point on the timeline when your career focus began to take shape. Some even begin with their current title and position and move on from there. Wherever you start, you want this paragraph to catch everyone up to where you are now so you can tell them where you’re going.
  • Body (3 paragraphs) – Your body paragraphs are where you “flesh out” your history. It’s your story. This is where you talk about your education, your accomplishments, and the whys that motivate you to do what you do.
  • Conclusion (1 paragraph) – This is where you tell your reader where you are going—your vision for your brand and the people that you serve. 

Once you’ve written your full bio (up to 400 words, give or take), you’ll want to cut it to about 200 words to create the shorter version. This is where you go from specifics to generalities. For example, in a longer bio, you might mention the subject of your dissertation as it relates to your current career path, but in the shorter bio, it would suffice to say you received a Ph.D. and from where. 

5 short bio examples

Below I’ve shared 5 short bio examples from business owners who’ve put in the work to create outstanding personal brands. Some are solopreneurs whose personal and company brands are the same, while others head up large companies and have chosen to separate their personal brand from the company’s. 

The first example from Whitney Johnson, the CEO and co-founder of Disruption Advisors shows her full bio (pulled from her LinkedIn profile). Underneath you’ll find the shortened version she displays on her website. I found even shorter versions on her YouTube and Twitter (X) pages. This is a good example of how to take a longer bio and shorten it.

If you have a website, are on any social media platforms, or just need a short blurb about yourself to include in articles — what you choose to put in your bio can make or break whether or not people choose to do business with you. And if you do it right, your bio could actually have people reaching out to you to talk business. Here are some tips and business owner bio examples to help expand your reach and show people what they want to see.

Instead of thinking about your bio as a general “About Me” paragraph, try to get more targeted than that.

In an ideal world, what is it that you’d want to happen from people reading your bio?

If you’re a business owner (or even a business professional of any kind), you probably want people to read your bio and then contact you because they’re interested in working with you.

How do you get someone interested in working with you?

You put information in your bio that would make someone understand what’s in it for them.

So, instead of taking the “About Me” approach, you find a way to talk about you, your services, and what you do by showing what you have done for other people!

For example, I could write my bio in one of two ways: About me or about you .

About me: “Co-owner of Inspired Idiots social media marketing agency. I specialize in copywriting, blog writing, and project management.”

Me me me me me. Easy to read, easy to forget.

About you : “Social media marketing consultant, Inspired Idiots. I help people stop wasting time on social media and double their investment back by actually turning digital marketing into sales.”

I give one short sentence about the brand I represent, and then I talk about what you will get from working with me. I poke at the pain point that a lot of our clients deal with — they’re on social media, but they don’t know why they’re not getting customers from it — and then I tell them how I solve that pain point.

It’s about me, but it’s really about you and what I can do for you. Let’s look at some more examples.

Business owner bio examples: Mary Levy of Levy Foundation LLC.

Mark Levy , big-leagues business owner, follows this exact strategy in his bio. One sentence about what he does, followed by what, specifically, he could do for you. Now, when it comes to first-person (“I am…”) vs third-person (“Mark is…”) I’m a firm believe in using the first-person voice.

Because it creates more of a connection between you and the reader , which is what you’re ultimately trying to do. Sure, the third-person voice (like the example above and below) creates a sense of authority, as if someone else wrote the bio about you and is therefore saying all these prestigious things — but you’re trying to attract people who want to talk with YOU, want to potentially work with YOU, and want to know what value YOU can bring them. That human-to-human voice is better achieved with first-person language.

We’ve given you lots of info on how to write a bio, but that doesn’t make it easy to write about yourself. Remember, even the most confident people can struggle with self-promotion! Luckily, there are a few tips to keep in mind that should be helpful for your “about me” writing.

1. Don’t think too much.

Most bios follow a formula, and that’s totally fine. In the case of most LinkedIn summaries, professional bios, and speaker bios for events, it’s not really necessary to stray from the norm. Simply including an adjective that gives readers a clue about your personality or mentioning a fascinating achievement can make your bio fun and different. 

2. Know your worth.

Writing a bio on a huge social media platform can be understandably daunting–there is a crazy amount of people and bios out there already! But don’t fall into the comparison trap. Remember this: You’re the only one who gets to tell your story in this way, and you have inherent value. As long as you remain authentic and sincere, there’s no need to be concerned about anyone else!

3. Feel free to borrow.

We’ll admit it: Bios are often tedious and repetitive. If you discover a structure you like that stands out, then feel free to borrow it! Avoid copying someone’s bio–that’s their story, not yours–but you can absolutely mimic its structure. 

4. Get help.

After I started my first professional bridesmaid business over six years ago and officially became an entrepreneur, I found it quite challenging to talk about myself. When people asked questions about who I was and what I was working on, I often found myself stumbling over my words and answering with incomplete sentences. 

In addition to the questions, so many people — from business professionals to journalists — asked me for a bio, and I didn't have one. All I had was an outdated cover letter and resume from applying to jobs years before but I didn't have anything current that showcased a brief, but comprehensive summary, of my journey, passions, and overall professional mission. 

That's when I realized I needed to craft a bio that could be ready for inquiries from press, investors, brands who wanted to partner with me, and a long list of other people curious for an inside look at my background. Since then, I've perfected multiple versions of my bio for every situation over the years.

It takes a certain level of preparation, skill, and strategy to summarize your personal story and share it with an audience. For an entrepreneur, the art of showcasing your background, your current work, and your overall purpose can feel extremely hard to do, especially when you're trying to condense it all into a few short and concise paragraphs.  

Whether you're writing your story for the about page on your website, a press release, a speaker's packet for a conference, or to pitch future investors, creating the perfect bio should be high up on your to-do list. Here's where to start, what you should include, and what you can leave out.

1. Start with a summary

The first paragraph of your personal bio should capture people's attention, pull them into your story, and give them an overview of who you are. Think of it this way: If they only read the first paragraph, would they be able to understand a glimpse of who you are, what you do, and what makes you unique?

Consider this first paragraph as your tagline or personal brand statement. It should be short and clear — you'll dive deeper into what you're currently working on and your professional background later on.

Here's an example you can use to get started by filling in the blanks. You can change around the information based on your experience and background, but stick to the brevity of length and the summarized format of your personal details.   

[Your name] is the founder of [name of company], which provides [services or offerings], to [who is your audience or industry]. [Your name] has [experience, background, skills, etc.] and a passion for [describe your purpose].

2. Explain what you're working on

Whether you're running your own company, expanding a side hustle, or brainstorming your next project or business, spend a paragraph sharing a handful of details on what you're currently working on.

Begin with what you are spending your time doing, who you want to impact or influence, what problems you want to solve with your business or project, and what makes what you are doing unique, timely, or unusual.

The template below can be easily adapted to fit your personal experience. Make this paragraph as detailed as you'd like and change what you write here based on who will receive this bio.

For example, you might want to add more details and metrics for investors and remove some of those details for a panel or guest appearance.  

[Your name] is currently working on [describe the business, project, idea, life transition, etc.], with the goal of [what's the reason you're working on this, who do you want to impact]. [Your name] noticed [describe the problem you want to solve or how you want to disrupt or change the industry you are in] and decided to [explain what you created, built, or did to help solve this problem and touch on what makes it different or unique from what is out there].

3. Share your background and expertise 

When people are reading your story, they want to understand a bit about your past experience and work history. Here, you should spotlight your background and any specific professional skills, strengths, or expertise. 

Highlight past jobs, careers, courses, degrees, curiosities, volunteer work, and anything else that relates to your purpose and story. Below is a template you can add, edit, and make work for you and your background.

[Your name] has spent [share years of experience, past careers] and has mastered [share skills or strengths]. [Your name] has also [share any additional information on your background, experience, work history, skills, courses, degrees, and more].

4. Provide additional details 

When we're writing our bio, we might shy away from adding in details that don't directly correlate to what we are working on. However, it's perfectly OK to add in a few lines about hobbies and passions that might not relate to your business — these details are often extremely memorable and help your bio stand out and sound more like you.

Feel free to add in details about what you enjoy doing in your free time, what past hobbies you've done, and what other things you enjoy on a personal level.

[Your name] can be found spending time [talk about hobbies, passions, weekend to-do's, etc.] and is also known to enjoy [add in any additional details here].

A good bio tells someone why you are the right person for the job, why he or she should buy your products, why you are the perfect one to write an article or book, teach a class, create a design, etc.

Most bios can be short and sweet – giving the highlights of what you do, who you are, and what is important and/or interesting about you and your business. Sound overwhelming? It doesn’t have to be. If your bestie was introducing you to a friend, what would he or she say about you and what you do?

Here are some tips for making sure your bio doesn’t just sing, but sings for you.

Focus your bio to the task at hand and make it specific to your audience and your purpose. If targeting customers, what do they need to know about your design expertise? Have you won any design awards? Do you teach others? Do you travel the world looking for organic dyes?

Note your specific skills . If you are writing a technique article for a magazine or website or teaching a class, include skills that relate to that particular subject. Do you have a degree in textile design? Learned cooking from Wolfgang Puck? Studied botany and wrote a book about medicinal herbs?

Prepare different versions for different uses : short (50-75 words, for articles), medium (100-150 words, for teaching blurbs, “about me” sections, etc.), and long (150-250 words, suitable for authors) . If given a specific word count, keep to that count. If you wear different hats, create a bio that fits each. For instance, when writing for a business publication, I focus on my reporting and researching skills and don’t mention that I teach craft workshops and attend creative conventions. But if writing for a craft or art publication, my bio may be downright sassy, even admitting that most of my crafting experience comes from being a Girl Scout leader.

Make the bio professional, but not stuffy, even though you’re writing in the third person . Write in a relaxed, conversational tone, but use professional language (i.e., You are a mother of three, not a mommy of three.)

Proof your bio before publishing or sending it out. Print it – we catch more mistakes on a printed copy than we do on a computer screen. If you are unsure, ask a trusted friend to read your bio. Check your spelling and grammar.

Be concise, not flowery. Avoid exaggerations, but don’t be afraid to include one or two fun facts, such as winning the butter sculpting contest at the Iowa State Fair, if the info fits the tone of your bio. Include only what information is relevant.

Don’t embellish the facts . The last thing you want is for someone to Google you and discover that you didn’t graduate from Oxford, win an Academy Award for set design, or make Martha Stewart’s clothes.

He pleaded guilty to 33 counts

Former vbs mutual bank board chair matodzi to serve 15 years in jail, court hands sentence to tshifiwa matodzi for corruption, theft, fraud and money laundering.

Former chairperson of the now defunct VBS Mutual Bank Board, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, has been handed a 495-year sentence for theft, fraud, money laundering and a pattern of racketeering activities that culminated in the collapse of the bank.

Matodzi, 47, was sentenced at the Pretoria high court on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to 33 charges. He was handed a 15-year sentence on each count.

However, the judge ordered that charge 2 to 33 run concurrently with count 1. This means Matodzi got an effective 15-year sentence. 

According to Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale. 

Matodzi pleaded guilty to 33 counts, which include corruption, theft, fraud, money laundering and a pattern of racketeering activities in contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

She also said Matodzi was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Another hurdle as defence lawyers for VBS Mutual Bank accused say they're not ready for trial

Hawks head Lt-Gen Godfrey Lebeya said the conviction was a testament to their commitment.  

“We have always maintained that we will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice, and this outcome reinforces our resolve. Let this serve as a stern warning to those who believe they can escape the long arm of the law.

"The DPCI will not relent in its mission to bring criminals to justice. We are actively pursuing other suspects in this case, and they too will face the full might of the law,” said Lebeya.  

Matodzi’s involvement in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal dates back to his tenure as chairperson of the bank and its shareholder, Vele Investments. He was the alleged kingpin behind the R2bn VBS money heist.

The scandal, often referred to as the “Great Bank Heist”, saw the looting of funds from the bank, leading to its eventual collapse in March 2018. The collapse of VBS had a devastating affect on many municipalities and individual depositors who lost their savings.
