The latest techniques and intelligent methods for computer-aided information processing in medicine are the focus of this Bachelor's and Master's programme.
The main focus of the studies is on the following areas:
Computerised collection, processing and application of patient data are playing an ever-greater role for their care in hospitals and doctors’ offices, for managing the system and for clinical research. In our eHealth programme, you will learn how to process patient data efficiently in information systems and to systematically and securely combine these from diverse medical facilities into electronic patient files.
In this new focus you will learn about the latest methods for the evaluation, analysis and interpretation of medical data. Methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence enable an increasingly automated evaluation of complex patient data. Of particular interest here are neural networks and deep learning methods, which open up new possibilities for supporting medical diagnostics and therapy.
In the Medical Imaging and Signal Processing programme, we teach you practical techniques for medical imaging and the latest computer analysis methods and visualisation of medical images and biosignals – which already enable medical practitioners to provide better treatments of patients or will do so in the future.
In our Bioinformatics programme, you will apply informatics methods to biological, especially genetic data, which are becoming increasingly important in advanced medicine.
You will be introduced to cellular biology, genetics and information processing techniques. These are of particular importance for consolidating your knowledge by choosing from among the compulsory courses in bioinformatics.
For years, the demand has been high for medical informatics graduates.
In view of the growing significance of IT in modern medicine, one expects the demand to keep rising for highly-qualified IT professionals in the healthcare sector and medical engineering.
The courses of both the bachelor and the master degree programmes are generally taught in German. In particular, applicants must have a good command of German. Please consult the German pages on the programmes for details.
Although the majority of the courses in the degree programmes are taught in German, there are a number of courses taught in English that are suitable for exchange students.

Andrew Boyd , BHIS associate professor, was named the 2024 winner of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Clinical Informatics Physician Innovator Award.
The award has been presented to outstanding physicians annually since 2021 at the association’s Clinical Informatics Conference .
Informatics is the science of using biomedical data to improve human health, aid in the delivery of healthcare services and increase knowledge for scientific inquiry.
“We live in an age where massive amounts of medical information is available,” said Kal Pasupathy , BHIS department head and professor.
Dr. Boyd is a well-recognized physician-scientist who has in-depth clinical knowledge, years of experience and know-how to simplify various forms of data into a computable form. The American Medical Informatics Association is a leader in transforming healthcare through informatics. It is very fitting that he is recognized by this community for his innovative efforts and years of contribution. We are proud of Dr. Boyd.
Boyd’s recent work has focused on equity in health data and informatics. He co-directs UIC’s Institute for Equitable Health Data Science Research , which was created in February 2024 to analyze and eliminate potential biases in health data before they are embedded into artificial intelligence algorithms. This effort will create biomedical science and technology solutions while prioritizing health equity for diverse populations in Chicago and beyond.

Program overview.
Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary program that combines expertise from biology, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering to train students and develop technologies to address major problems at the forefront of biomedical and bio-industrial research. The program builds upon the research and academic strengths of the faculty in the Biomolecular Engineering Department, as well as many other departments.
The Biomolecular Engineering concentration is designed for students interested in protein engineering, stem cell engineering, and synthetic biology. The emphasis is on designing biomolecules (DNA, RNA, proteins) and cells for particular functions, and the underlying sciences are biochemistry and cell biology.
The Bioinformatics concentration combines mathematics, computer science, and engineering to explore and understand biological data from high-throughput experiments, such as genome sequencing, gene-expression chips, and proteomics experiments.
Study and Research Opportunities
High school students intending to apply to this major should have completed at least four years of mathematics (through advanced algebra and trigonometry) and three years of science in high school. AP Calculus courses, and some familiarity with programming, are recommended but not necessary.
This is a screening major . Transfer students need to have completed eight transferable courses that count toward the major, with a GPA in those courses of 2.8 or better. However, students are recommended to complete at least ten transferable courses prior to transfer, as they may otherwise have difficulty finishing in a timely fashion.
Students may satisfy the bioethics requirement if they have completed a suitable ethics course at their community college before transfer, even if the course does not articulate to BME 80G.
Students in Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics can look forward to careers in academia, the information and biotechnology industries, public health, or medical sciences.
Unlike other engineering fields, but like life sciences, biomolecular engineers generally need to get Ph.Ds to get cutting-edge research and design jobs.
Those in bioinformatics can get good-paying jobs with just a B.S., though an M.S. degree offers the most potential for rapid advancement. The Wall Street Journal recently ranked UCSC as the number two public university in the nation for high-paying jobs in engineering .
