The Case Study Of Vanitas 's protagonist and vampire doctor, Vanitas claims to be a human that helps the vampire race. With the Book of Vanitas, he restores a vampire's True Name stolen by the Malnomen and saves them from corruption.
Season 2 revealed parts of Vanitas's past. The Vampire of the Blue Moon , also named Vanitas, saved him and Mikhail from Moreau. What happened with the Vampire of the Blue Moon afterward raises questions about Vanitas's true motives to help the vampire race.

Vanitas and Mikhail were subjects of Moreau's inhumane experiments. The doctor attempted to turn humans into vampires by injecting the children test subjects with the Vampire of the Blue Moon's blood. Most children did not survive the experiments because their bodies reacted poorly to the blood. Vanitas and Mikhail were the only two subjects whose bodies did not reject the blood. This granted them some enhanced abilities of a vampire , including the ability to heal faster than the average human.
Vanitas of the Blue Moon saved the two children and raised them as their kin. Vanitas began calling the vampire Luna after he took on their name. Due to Moreau's experiments, Vanitas and Mikhail's bodies started to break down, and they would not live much longer. Luna revealed that they could save the two by making them their kin. Vanitas immediately refused, wanting to remain a human even if we would die sooner.
At some point, Vanitas killed Luna. He believed that Mikhail was also dead. Before that, Luna marked him with the Mark of Possession which bound him as part of the Blue Moon Clan. It is unclear as to why Vanitas relented and agreed to be part of the Blue Moon Clan, but two theories give a potential explanation as to why.

Vanitas Wanted to Avenge Luna
Luna was born on the night of a Blue Moon, while most vampires were born under the Crimson Moon. The Blue Moon was known for stripping away a vampire's powers. Therefore, Luna was scored and exiled by the rest of their community. For revenge, Luna created the Books of Vanitas and the Malnomen disease, which would corrupt a vampire's True Name. With this, they hoped to eradicate the vampire race and get revenge on all who shunned them.
The theory suggests that Luna was afflicted with the Malnomen disease, which stole their True Name. Luna asked Vanitas to kill them before they turned into a monster. Vanitas wanted revenge on the individual who stole Luna's name, so he took the Book of Vanitas and began curing vampires. By curing vampires, Vanitas was searching for the individual who stole Luna's name and was hoping to return it to avenge his parental figure.

Vanitas Wanted Revenge on Luna
Vanitas didn't trust Luna as Mikhail did. He may have afflicted the Luna with the Malnomen to have an excuse to kill them. However, someone stole Luna's name before their death, so a piece of them still existed in the world. Vanitas potentially wanted to erase any evidence of Luna, and if he found the individual that stole their name, Vanitas could cure them. With the True Name restored, it would completely erase whatever remained of the Vampire of The Blue Moon, and Vanitas would have his revenge .
Vanitas wanted to remain human and resented Luna for turning him into one. Restoring Luna's True Name would allow him to achieve his revenge. It would also allow for him to tarnish the reputation of the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Since the Blue Moon originally stripped the powers of a vampire, Vanitas using the Book of Vanitas to restore a vampire's True Name does the opposite of what Luna wanted to achieve by spreading the Malnomen. The reverse operation conducted by the book would save the vampire species that Luna wanted to perish.
Unfortunately for curious viewers, it hasn't yet been fully explained in the anime what Vanitas's true motives are. He avoids having his memories read by Noe and gets defensive if someone asks about his past. As the series progresses, it may reveal why the human doctor chose to treat vampires.
