The Saudi Government is also investing heavily in its schools and universities (about 23% of the country’s spending goes towards education). This has resulted in globally ranked institutions and increasing popularity with international students.

A number of Saudi Arabian universities are globally ranked, and a high proportion receives extremely generous support and funding from the Government. This has resulted in excellent PhD research centers – and several scholarships for international students.

• Globally Ranked Institutions  – There are only 36 universities in Saudi Arabia, and several are ranked amongst the best in the world and 20 are within the top 100 Arab universities.

Saudi Arabian Higher Education System

There are only  thirty-six universities  in Saudi Arabia (alongside well a range of higher education colleges). Government and private institutions

There are  three different types  of institution in Saudi Arabia that offer PhD programmes. These are either private or state institutions:

• State universities  – The 26 registered state universities are funded and governed by the Ministry of Education; however, they have administrative and academic autonomy.
• Private universities  – The 10 registered private universities do not receive any direct public funding and offer several PhD programmes.
• Private colleges  – Similar to the private universities, these 42 higher education colleges are authorised to provide PhD programmes.

Institutions for Female Applicants

Education for women (both local and foreign) in Saudi Arabia is governed by the principles of Islam. This means men and women are not taught in the same classes. Women viewing lectures delivered by a male professor do so through a monitor.

Because of these restrictions, only 36 out of the 78 higher education universities and colleges enrol women. Three of these are women only, including the largest women’s only university in the world, the Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University.

It is best to check directly with your university as to whether it accepts female applicants and how its programmes are organized .

The future of Saudi Arabian higher education

In November 2000 the Saudi Arabian Government devised the Higher Education Fund, used to invest in financing programmes, research centres and scholarships at its universities.

Since this King Abdulaziz Al Saud has released the  Vision 2030  plan: by the year 2030, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hopes to have at least  five  universities in the world ranked top  200 . As you’d expect, high-quality research is key to these ambitions, with the potential for excellent PhD opportunities.

Saudi Arabia is on the way to achieving its ranking ambitions; three of the country’s thirty-six universities can be found in all three major university league tables.

Saudi Arabia University Cities

There are a number of major cities within Saudi Arabia with quality institutions. The majority of universities are within the capital Riyadh. Saudi Arabia’s main university cities include Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina, Mecca, Dammam, and  Thuwal .

Saudia Arabia PhD structure

The core component of a Saudi Arabian PhD programme is similar to that of the UK and other countries. You will submit and defend a  thesis  detailing the research you have conducted.

Program length of a PhD in Saudi Arabia

Typically, PhD programs in Saudi Arabia are  2.5-3.5 years  depending upon whether you have a Masters or Bachelors degree, respectively. The maximum enrolment period is 5 years.

Institutions employ a two-semester system starting in  late August/early September  and finishing in  June  for summer. A small number of institutions will run a summer semester; dependent upon student interest in summer courses.

Assessment and examination for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

The content of PhD programmes in Saudi Arabia may vary depending upon the institution. As a full-time student, you will have to complete a minimum of 30 credit-hours assessed by advanced coursework. Typically, 12 of these will be compulsory course modules and 18 electives.

The credit-hour system is similar to the USA. It works on the basis that one 50-minute lecture or two/three 50-minute lab and tutorial sessions over the 15-week semester are regarded as one credit hour.

There are typically two phases of formal examinations to the research section of the programme. In the first year you must submit a  dissertation proposal  and complete an  oral defence . The final examination is your  dissertation  which you must  defend  in front of a Dissertation and Defence Committee, comprised of four members – three internal and one external. (Slightly different to the two examiner ‘private’ viva structure used in the UK).

Fees and funding for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia takes a relatively unique approach to higher education fees and funding. In order to study at a Saudi university (and receive an international visa) you  must  also win a full or partial scholarship. This means that the ‘cost’ of a PhD in Saudi Arabia is very low, but the application process is also very competitive.

You won’t normally pay fees as a PhD student in Saudi Arabia. Instead, successful applicants will receive a scholarship (see below).

Accommodation and living costs

It can be quite expensive to live in Saudi Arabia depending upon the accommodation you choose and the area you live in. Accommodation ranges from modern flats to luxury villas with swimming pools and spa facilities. Applicants receiving a full scholarship will have their accommodation paid for them. However, those on a paid grant or partial grant may not.

Students typically live in  private accommodation  organized through their university. On average rent will cost  1,000-3,000 SAR  (USD $267-800) per month, however, if you move closer towards the capital city Riyadh it is likely you will be paying more. In addition to this, it is typically recommended you budget  5,636-11,252 SAR  (USD $1,500-3,000) per month for living costs.

PhD Scholarships in Saudi Arabia

The Government have heavily invested in the global expansion of their higher education system; therefore, the Higher Education Fund has a section for scholarships to none Saudis

There are two types of PhD Scholarships in Saudi Arabia:

• A Full PhD Scholarship  – the student receives all benefits: a  monthly stipend ,  accommodation ,  full tuition fee ,  research support costs  and  health care  cover
• A Partial PhD Scholarship  – the student receives some benefits: full  tuition fee  or  tuition fee  plus  accommodation

The cost of living in Saudi Arabia

It can be expensive to live in Saudi Arabia if you are on a partial scholarship ensure you will have sufficient funds for your entire study before accepting your place. Some universities may even require proof of funds/financial sponsors to show you will be able to afford to live for the entire study.

University international student fellowships

As you must have a scholarship to obtain a visa to study in Saudi Arabia a high number of institutions offer international scholarships for students who aren’t successful in applying for the Government’s scheme. These will cover:

• Living costs  – an annual stipend of  75,015- 112,523 SAR  (USD $20,000-30,000) typically paid monthly, relocation support and a housing allowance
• University costs  – full tuition fee covered and research support
• Health care  – fellowships cover your dental and medical care for your entire PhD study

Typically, university fellowship applications have the same closing date as the PhD programme; this is usually October-January  the year before admission. For more information and for applications check your university’s website.

Paid PhD Scholarships in Saudi Arabia

Research paid scholarships in Saudi Arabia, these are for  Non-Saudi students  and are not government or university funded. Typically, these include an industrial sponsor.

Applying for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

As there are only a small number of universities in Saudi Arabia there is no official central application service. You should apply to the university directly once you have ensured you meet their specific admission requirements.

Admission requirements for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

Different universities will have their own requirements for a PhD in Saudi Arabia, however there are a number of key things the majority require:

• Degrees  – you will need a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 (UK 2.2) in your Bachelors degree. Some institutions require a Masters degree (GPA 3.0), depending upon your chosen programme.
• Graduate Record Examination  ( GRE ) – for some institutions this is compulsory, with a set minimum score you must achieve. For others a GRE result is advised, as it will strengthen your application.
• Three letters of recommendation  – these must be from professors you have researched with or taken detailed courses with.

Language requirements for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

As the majority of PhD programs in Saudi Arabia are taught in English but some students may be required to sit an English language test. This is not required for students from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. Other international students must complete one of the following tests:

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  – minimum score of 79 in the internet-based test
• English Language Testing System (IELTS)  – a minimum score of 6.0

Some universities do teach PhD programmes in Arabic and require a submitted Arabic dissertation. You should check with your chosen university as to whether you need to be fluent in Arabic for their specific programme.

The application processes for a PhD in Saudi Arabia

In  Saudi Arabia , students are encouraged to research all PhD programs on offer throughout the different institutions. Some PhD programs will have projects with  designated funding , others will require you to discuss your research ideas with a  prospective supervisor  prior to submitting scholarship and program applications.

Applying for a  Study Visa  in Saudi Arabia can be quite complex due to restrictions for tourists and travellers. In addition, you  must  have obtained a scholarship from an institution, private funder or government prior to your application.

You apply for the visa at your countries Saudi Arabian Embassy and must take the following things with you:

• Your  passport  with at least 12 months validity and  2 adjacent blank pages , original  birth certificate  and a  photocopy  along with  three passport sized photos .
• Your  university invitation letter ,  electronic authorisation  from a Saudi higher education institution and your  education credentials .
• A  medical report  signed by your doctor showing you are free of contagious diseases and a  local police clearance certificate .

Once this application has been processed and accepted you will be able to obtain a residence permit upon arrival to Saudi Arabia. This is  free  and is valid for the  duration of your study . Students who are nationals of  Gulf Cooperation Council  countries do not need to apply for a Study Visa.

Can you Work while studying for your PhD in Saudi Arabia?

No! Your Study Visa  does not permit  the right to employment within Saudi Arabia. It is therefore currently illegal for foreigners to undertake paid work. You are however allowed to do unpaid internships as long as your institution has authorized it.

Health insurance

You  must  have  health insurance  prior to arriving in Saudi Arabia that will cover the entirety of your PhD programme. If you have received a full scholarship this will include health insurance.

You need to ensure that the insurance you choose meets the requirements for your visa and has an emergency evacuation component (in case you need to be taken elsewhere for treatment). The main insurers are  Bupa Saudi Arabia and Tawuniya .

Scholarship entry requirements

Candidates fulfilling the following requirements are eligible to apply.

• Must have a good record of conduct and must be medically fit.
• Must have earned a secondary school graduation certificate or its equivalent within the last three years.
• Applicants must not be younger than 17 and older than 25 years for the bachelor’s program.
• Applicants must be 35 years old for Ph.D. and 30 years for Masters’s.
• Should commit to full-time study if accepted for the morning shift class.
• Have to abide by all the university by-laws and regulations.
• Should have not received any other scholarship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before.
• Students should also fulfill the admission requirements for their chosen program.
• Candidates for Arabic Language and Literature, Islamic Law and Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Information Science programs must own a strong command in spoken and written Arabic language.
•  Must hold a university degree from a recognized college or university and with a “very good” result, at least.
• A recognized test score in the English language is essential for applicants whose first language is not English [only for master and PhD programs). The internationally acceptable exams and minimum required scores are as below:

– TOEFL (PBT) = 500

– TOEFL (CBT) = 173

– TOEFL (IBT) = 61

– IELTS=5

• The statement of purpose must be in English for all disciplines except in Islamic Studies and Arabic Language.

How to apply for a scholarship

1- The scholarship application can be submitted in an easy way through public universities for international scholarship students, according to the opening dates for the application for registration for admission to study in a Saudi university.​

2- Apply to the Saudi Cultural Attaché in your country.

​ 3- If there is no Saudi cultural attaché in your country, one can apply to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. ​

Types of scholarships:​

Government scholarships for international students are of two types:

1- Internal scholarships for non-Saudi students residing in the Kingdom with a legal residency.

2- External scholarships for non-Saudi students from outside the Kingdom.

Scholarships in Saudi government universities are of three types according to their different advantages:

A -  free scholarships in which the student gets full benefits.

C- Grants paid for.

All of this is in accordance with the rules regulated by the educational institution council, and in a manner that does not conflict with the regulations governing this ​

Admission requirements

Among the conditions and controls for accepting non-Saudi international students for all levels of study are as follows:

1- The admission requirements applicable to Saudis in institutions of higher education apply to internal and external scholarship students.

2- The student should not be less than (17) years old and not more than (25) years for the undergraduate and institute for teaching Arabic language or the equivalent, (30) years for the master’s degree, and (35) years for the doctoral degree.

3 - That the government of the student’s country approves the study in the Kingdom for countries that require it Non-Saudi students.

4- The student should not have obtained another scholarship from an educational institution in the Kingdom.

5- To attest certificates and supporting papers from the competent authorities specified by the educational institution.

6- To present a certificate of absence of precedents from the security services in his country.

7 - He should not be dismissed from one of the educational institutions in the Kingdom

8 - That he has a mahram with the student, according to the instructions regulating that, provided that he is covered by a grant or has a regular residence or is on the register of an employer in need of his services.

9 - To pass the medical examination determined by the regulations and instructions.

10- The educational institution may require a student’s recommendation from one of the bodies, institutions, or personalities specified by the institution.

11- The educational institution council sets the executive rules governing the admission of scholarship students from within, taking into account the following:

A- That the student obtains the approval of whoever is on his record to study at the educational institution.

B - The student must be a regular resident of the Kingdom.​

Application dates for the study:

The opening date for the scholarship application program is determined according to the requirements of the academic year at universities.

Advantages of external scholarships:

There are advantages and incentives that a student accepted to study in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can obtain, including:

A- Health care for him and his family members if they are brought in to reside with him, if the regulations require that.

B - A financial reward upon arrival.

C - housing.

D - The advantages enjoyed by fellow students of the educational institution.

E - Annual travel tickets, taking into account the regulations that take into account and organize that.​ ​​

1. King Abdulaziz Scholarship :

The University has 70 diploma courses, 2,000 bachelors, 160 masters, and 90 Ph.D. Courses. Don’t take it lightly as King Abdulaziz offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. Degree Programs at King Abdulaziz University. The University will cover all the expenses for the full duration of the program. The application portal is now open and accepting applications.

Eligibility: 

• The Applicant’s Age Doesn’t Exceed (35) Years for PhD And (30) Years for a Master and 25 Years for a bachelor’s Degree.
• The Applicant Must Have a University Degree From an Accredited College or University 
• For Masters and PhD Degrees: An Approved Exam in English is required for an Applicant Whose First Language is Not English. The Approved Exams and Minimum Required Scores Are Listed Below:
• TOEFL (PBT)=500
• TOEFL (CBT)=173
• TOEFL (IBT)=61
• He Must Have a Record of Good Conduct and Must Be Medically Fit.
• He Must Not Have Been Dismissed From Any University.
• A female student must be accompanied by a relative who is within the prohibited degrees with a regular resident.

2. King Abdullah University Scholarship

KAUST Scholarship for Spring 2024 offers 150 Masters, MS/Ph.D., PhD, and Doctorate Degree Programs. There is No Application Fee. Applying to the KAUST Scholarship is a Very Prestigious Opportunity. The University ranks 434 in the world. King Abdullah Scholarship 2024 is one of the most Famous and Important Scholarships in Saudi Arabia.

• Candidates from all over the world with any Nationality are eligible.
• Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply for Master’s Degree programs.
• Aspirants with a Master’s degree are eligible to apply for Doctoral Degree programs

3. King Fahd University Scholarships in Saudi Arabia

Additionally, international applicants from all over the world can apply for the KFUPM Scholarship 2024. The Scholarship is open for the Spring Semester (January 2024) intake. The King Fahd University Scholarship is a Fully Funded Scholarship to Study Full Master’s PhD and MBA Degree Programs. The applications for the King Fahd Scholarship can be submitted without TOEFL. All application process is online.

For Master Programs:

• A Four Year Bachelor’s Degree
• A Grade-Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent, and a GPA of 3.00 in the subject of the major field.

PhD Programs:

• An MS Degree (after a four-year B.S. degree)
• A minimum GPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent in both B.S. and M.S. degrees.
• A Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution.
• A Grade-Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 or equivalent.
• At least one course in college-level calculus which covers both differentiation and integration.
• Working knowledge of computers as evidenced by at least one course in that area (e.g. data processing, programming, information systems, etc.)
• At least one year of full-time work experience. This requirement may be waived for graduate assistants, research assistants, and applicants with exceptional academic records.

4. Islamic University Madinah Scholarship:

Also, the Islamic University of Madinah was founded by the Government of Saudi Arabia by a royal decree in 1961 in the Islamic holy city of Madinah. IU Madinah Scholarship offers for Undergraduate or Masters students. However, both Males and females are encouraged to apply for this Scholarship program.

5. Al-Majmaah University Scholarships

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers scholarships to non-Saudi students to pursue their post-secondary studies at Saudi universities. Sand creature — like something out of ‘Dune’ — found in Saudi Arabia. See new species

A long the coast of Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea retreats from the rocky and sandy beaches with the tide, revealing small pools teeming with life.

The “lagoon-like” environments are scattered along the shore where land meets water, and in them, tiny creatures crawl up under the rocks and burrow into the sand.

Then the rock lifts, and the creepy crawlies are met with the wide eyes of a researcher.

One of these researchers is Chloé Fourreau, a PhD student at the University of Ryukyus in Japan.

Fourreau is part of a team searching the coastline for the presence of Perinereis, a type of segmented marine ragworm.

It wasn’t long before researchers found one — and it’s a new species .

Unlike the worms living in the sand in the dunes of Arrakis, the fictional planet at the center of the “Dune” universe, this worm is incredibly small, but it does bear a remarkable resemblance to its much larger fictional cousin.

“It might be the real sandworm in Saudi Arabia as it lives in sand, under rocks of the intertidal,” Fourreau wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Definitely played with our notion of time as we were flipping rocks endlessly looking for it.”

Fourreau’s team described the new species in a study , published April 1 in the journal ZooKeys.

The “yellowish-brown” worm is only about 2 inches long, according to the study, and is identifiable as a ragworm because of a “prominent” blood vessel that runs along its back.

The species has been named Perinereis kaustiana, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) ragworm, to honor the marine science program researching the Red Sea, the researchers said.

The worms have curved pincers on one end surrounding a hole, great for swallowing Spice harvesters if they were only a few thousand times larger.

There are some key features that identify the worm as a new species.

First, the KAUST ragworm has different sized tentacular cirri, the membrane-like protrusions along the body, compared with other known ragworms.

The ends of the protrusions are also “finger-like,” the researchers said, which was not seen in other species.

“The new species is so far unique to the northern Red Sea and apparently easy to find in the rocky beaches of the Gulf of Aqaba,” the researchers said.

Many species that call the Red Sea home live exclusively in that area, meaning they are endemic, so the researchers believe this species of ragworm may not be found anywhere else on the planet.

The Gulf of Aqaba starts at the northern tip of the Red Sea and continues to the southern edge of Israel.
