In relation to Ubuntu 11.04, the Desktop is named Unity. In comparison to older versions of Ubuntu, Unity has updated, significant features. In future OS’s, and having replaced OS Gnome in terms of its popularity, Unity is praised for its more beautiful and simple interface. Not only is Unity made for computer OS, but also for other electrical devices, such as Smartphones and Tablets, which is compatible with touch gestures.

performance As Ubuntu 11.04 is a fairly new OS, released at the date April 28 of 2011, Ubuntu has received a patch which boosted the kernels performance, which has now been implemented into kernel 2.6.38. This kernel is now being used in Ubuntu 11.04. Users that will be upgrading to 11.04 or upgrading from Maverick can expect a great deal of improvements in the overall performance

Features Music Player Past OS has been using one of the most popular music players, known as Rhythmbox. As OS continuously updates through time, and 11.04 being released April 2011, its been implemented into Unity the new music player, Banshee Player. Reasons to its upgrades, it is because of its competition between other high end players such as iTunes, WMP, and even Amarok. Features in Banshee include Bookmarks, Amazon MP3 Store, Video Support, and Audiobooks. Office Continuing from past OS with Linux, Unity still continues to use OpenOffice. As part of the whole OS itself, OpenOffice is already built into the OS, like all other Linux OS. It is still free software, and is also still compatible with Microsoft Office. Internet Browser Firefox 4, being the latest version of Firefox released by Mozilla is also in-built within Linux OS, and is also free software. How to Create Lightweight Slideshow Presentations in Your Linux Terminal

Keep everything brief and to the point by creating simple, terminal-based slideshows on Linux.

Slideshow presentations are an essential and unavoidable part of corporate and academic life thanks to their ability to help you plan and structure the dissemination of information to your audience.

But snazzy graphics and transition effects can be a distraction from the core information, with the effort you put into making a visually appealing PowerPoint better spent elsewhere.

Slides is a terminal-based presentation tool for Linux that processes Markdown files—helping you to create and present slideshows without ever leaving your terminal!

Slideshows Are an Essential Business Tool

When you need to impart vital data or instructions to a group of disengaged and disinterested employees or students at 9 am on a Monday, nothing works better than presenting a slideshow .

It requires minimal participation from the audience, and you can organize your presentation in a structured, logical way. Unlike a video presentation, it's easy to build breakpoints into a slideshow, so you can test your audience's engagement as they yawn, stretch, and doodle on notepads.

You can enhance the value of a slideshow with handouts—allowing slides to be inwardly digested after the show is over.

Why Use a Terminal-Based Slideshow

A big drawback of traditional slideshows built using programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides is that they can be distracting for both audience and the author.

When putting a slideshow together, there's a temptation to use background images to enliven the otherwise dull text. You can spend hours deciding on the correct font family, weight, and placement.

Is it better to have the first slide gently fade into the second, or to have the entire presentation progress by way of zooms, wipes, flips, and dissolve effects?

The result is often a mess of clutter that takes too long to create and nauseates viewers.

Slides helps you avoid all of these problems. The font is your terminal font, there are no distracting transitions, and while it is possible to display images if your terminal supports them, it's not a primary feature.

Best of all, you create your slideshow using Markdown, a straightforward, easy-to-understand markup language, which can be rapidly mastered to produce beautiful and simple formatted text on Linux.

How to Install Slides on Linux

Slides is written in Google's Go language, and you'll need to have Go installed on your system before you start.

If your system supports snap packages, you can easily install Go with:

Then, you can use Go to install Slides:

Slides is also present in the Arch User Repository (AUR) . To add it this way, enter:

While Slides is present in the Snap Store, if you install it using snap, you'll run into problems when executing code. If you don't plan on using this feature, you can install Slides as a snap with the following:

You're now ready to create a slideshow.

Use Slides to Create an Awesome Terminal Slideshow

Creating a terminal-based slideshow is simple with Slides, and every directive to run the show can be contained within a single Markdown file. Here's why you should learn Markdown even if you're not using Slides.

To begin, use the nano text editor to create a new Markdown file:

In the file start writing the contents of your first slide, remembering to use standard Markdown conventions. Take advantage of standard Markdown features such as headings, bold and italic text, bullet points, numbered lists, tables, code blocks, quotes, and more!

When you're ready to move to the next slide, insert a triple dash on a new line.

As with all good presentations, it's best to follow some basic guidelines, and to follow the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

In practice, this means not trying to ram a complete essay into the eyeballs of your audience.

  • Points should be brief
  • Talk about your slide contents—don't just read them aloud
  • Summarize with a take-home message

You can start the slideshow by entering:

Slides also allows you to get up to some programmatic hi-jinks, and insert code blocks into your Markdown. Slides supports a wide variety of languages including JavaScript, Bash, Python, Elixir, and Go.

A code block is bracketed by two sets of three backticks, with the name of the language immediately following the first set.

To execute the code and show the result, just press Ctrl + E . If you want Slides to pre-process the code, wrap it in three tildes inside the code block, and change the location of the language. For instance:

...will display the current weather conditions in Chicago as part of the presentation.

For pre-processing to work, you'll need to make the file executable before passing it to Slides:

Additional Slides Options

As slides are written in Markdown, you can use the front matter at the very beginning of the file to set additional configuration options.

This front matter is again surrounded by three hyphens. For example:

The "theme" option allows you to specify a Glamour theme to prettify and style your terminal.

Using "author" allows you to set an author for the slideshow. By default, the author is set to the current user.

With "date", you can set the date. By default, this will be set to today's date.

You can set up Slides to serve slideshows over SSH with:

You will be given a port to connect to. This is usually 53531. Connect to the show with:

Brush Up on Your Public Speaking

Creating a beautiful, concise, and engaging slideshow presentation can go a long way toward getting your message across. Still, your preparation will count for naught if your delivery skills aren't up to scratch.

Learn to articulate your thoughts properly, and brush up on the best ways to address an audience with confidence, so your message goes across perfectly.

Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice, an office suite that replaces Microsoft Office. The LibreOffice equivalent to Microsoft PowerPoint is called Libreoffice Impress . You should be able to open your PPT or PPTX files by simply double-clicking the file.

By the way, in order to get to know the alternative to other popular software, I recommend taking a look at AlternativeTo.net . For example, here's a list of alternatives to PowerPoint in Linux .

  • 1 how can I open the file in the command shell? if only I know the command name, that would be much more convenient. ==> Ah, I found it's just 'libreoffice filename.pptx'. –  Chan Kim Oct 2, 2018 at 0:46

I recommend you that WPS (Linux version) is great application, with word, present, slider. It also has other platform version -- windows, android, ios, and it's free for you. and i think better than office.

WPS office link It has lots of free online templates, which helps me a lot on my work.

Present

To my experience, Libre Office has a lot of problems rendering properly ppt or pptx documents. The presentation is most of the time not matching at all the original document and the layout is often so messed up that it is almost impossible to read.

That has made me order at work a computer with Windows with the MS Office suite because I am unable to open documents (Excel, Word or PowerPoint) shared by colleagues to amend it.

And I have never been fully satisfied with MS Office suite over Wine as well.

That said, I do use Libre Office at home for most of my documents and it works very well if you stay in Libre Office.

Denis's user avatar

Ubuntu comes with Libre Office which can though open up MS Powerpoint files but most of the time it render it messed up.

2nd Option could be MS Office over Wine.

3rd and my personal favorite option is installing Windows on a Virtual machine and installing required windows software over there. I personally use Oracle Virtual Box. A virtual machine basically will cater to all your needs for a particular Operation system.

4th Option - try to open it online with MS office online or Google docs. You will just need to register an account for free on http://outlook.com or https://onedrive.live.com and upload the powerpoint to onedrive and you will be able to just open it from there. This might have been the best option but you may not be willing to take confidential and official documents online.

How-To Geek

15 ways to improve ubuntu without touching the terminal.

Don't like using the terminal? No problem! Revamp Ubuntu by just using GUI apps.

Key Takeaways

  • Use GNOME extensions through Extension Manager to add useful features and customize Ubuntu easily.
  • Make tweaks using GNOME Tweaks for customizing app windows and general UI experience.
  • Optimize productivity by changing core settings related to multitasking, sound, and default apps in Ubuntu.

Many people think that you need to use the terminal to properly control and tweak a Linux PC. While that might've been true 10 years ago, today, it's nothing more than a myth. So let's change how Ubuntu looks, feels, and operates without even opening the terminal or writing a single line of code.

I'll be using the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS release in this showcase. However, the tips and steps mentioned here should also work on previous releases. That said, with time, the older versions might lose support for some of the stuff discussed here. Ubuntu 24.04 will be supported for five years and thus should still be compatible with all these tweaks and features till April 2029.

Use These Six GNOME Extensions

Ubuntu uses a modified version of the GNOME desktop environment. As such, the simplest way to change the Ubuntu experience is by installing a few GNOME extensions to add more features and customize the default workflow.

To do this, first install the Extensions Manager app from the App Store (formerly Ubuntu Software). The app is available as a DEB package (not Snap).

Once installed, you will find the app in the Ubuntu App drawer. Open it and the following window should appear.

As you can see, Ubuntu ships with a few extensions out of the box, as shown under System Extensions. If you like, you can disable them from here or customize them by clicking on the settings icon. However, we are interested in installing a few extensions. To do this, switch to the "Browse" tab and search for the following extensions:

  • Dash to Panel (by Charlesg99) or Dash to Dock (by Michele_g): (don't enable both extensions together as that might cause problems)
  • Workspace Indicator (by fmuellner)
  • ArcMenu (by andrew_z)
  • Tray Icons: Reloaded (by Martin)
  • Just Perfection (by JustPerfection)
  • GSConnect (by dlandau)

Once done, head over to the "Installed" tab. From here, you can easily toggle the extensions on/off or click on the respective settings icon to configure how they function.

Now, let's take a quick look at each of the extensions. Starting with Dash to Panel, it transforms the dash (the iconic left-side apps panel on Ubuntu) into a panel similar to the Windows taskbar. Alternatively, you can use Dash to Dock to transform the dash into a macOS-like dock.

With Tray Icons: Reloaded, you can enable tray icons to show background apps. Workspace Indicator enables a convenient workspace switcher (or virtual desktop switcher) either on the Ubuntu top bar or the panel (you got from Dash to Panel). Then there's ArcMenu, which gives you an app launcher menu similar to Windows.

You can go inside the settings menu for each of these extensions to further fine-tune how they work. For example, inside ArcMenu's settings page, you can access tons of different menu layouts and granular control over how you want to style it.

Speaking of control, Just Perfection gives you access to a ton of settings and options to fine-tune the GNOME UI elements. You can use it to enable/disable UI elements and quick settings, customize the overall styling and presentation, and even control the general behavior of the desktop environment.

All that said, GSConnect (KDE Connect designed for GNOME) is arguably the most powerful extension on this list. Once set up, you can use it to control your desktop from your phone. This includes using your phone screen as a wireless touchpad or keyboard, wirelessly transferring files, controlling desktop media and volume, and much more.

Here's a guide to using KDE Connect on Windows . You can expect the same features and workflow with GSConnect on Ubuntu as well.

Make These Three GNOME Tweaks

GNOME Tweaks is another useful app that lets you customize the app windows and general UI. To install it, open the App Center (known as Ubuntu Software in the earlier version) and search for "GNOME Tweaks." It should appear as a DEB package (not Snap).

GNOME Tweaks gives you control over the appearance, sound, and other aspects of the operating system. I'd encourage you to tweak around with the various settings. If you want some directions, first head over to Startup Applications. It allows you to select apps to auto-start on your system as soon as you turn on your Ubuntu desktop.

Next, head over to the "Windows" section and make these two tweaks:

  • Select Titlebar Buttons > Placement > Left to move the window buttons to the left, similar to macOS (it's set to right by default).
  • Enable "Center New Window" under Click Actions. This will auto-position all newly opened windows in the center of the screen.

Finally, Change These Four Settings

Your Ubuntu setup should already start feeling more special and personalized. The final touches revolve around changing some core settings to optimize the system for productivity. To start, go to Settings > Multitasking and enable "Active Screen Edges" and "Hot Corner."

With Hot Corner enabled, you can trigger the Activities Overview by quickly navigating your mouse cursor to the top-left corner of the screen. This can be handy if you have the ArcMenu running and the Activities Overview button disabled—which is how I run my system.

Coming to Active Screen Edges, it allows you to snap windows to the four corners of the screen—a great little hack to take full advantage of a large monitor with more screen real estate.

Now the next setting is in the Sound section. From here, enable "Overamplification" to increase the volume above 100%. A great way to get some extra juice out of your current speaker.

Following this, head over to Settings > Apps > Default Apps and set default apps for the different things you do on your Ubuntu desktop. For instance, for emailing, I have Mailspring; for opening video and music files, I have VLC; for web links, I have Firefox; and so on.

And that's it! You just made your Ubuntu computing experience more productive and awesome without having to open the terminal at all.

It also supports a wide range of Windows applications, including Microsoft Office applications, games, and other popular applications.

Wine provides a transparent Windows-like environment so that Windows applications can run on the system without any modifications or compatibility issues.

How to Install Wine on Ubuntu

Installing Wine on Ubuntu is a fairly straightforward process.

First, you will need to ensure that you have the latest version of Ubuntu installed.

This can be done by running the command sudo apt-get update in the terminal.

Once you have the latest version of Ubuntu installed, you will be ready to begin the Wine installation process.

The first step of the installation process is to install the WineHQ software repository. This can be done by running the following command in the terminal: sudo apt-add-repository deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main. Once this command is run, you will need to update your software repository by running the command sudo apt-get update.

Once the repository is updated, you can install Wine by running the command sudo apt-get install –install-recommends winehq-stable.

This will install the latest version of Wine on your system.

Once the installation is complete, you can verify that Wine is installed and running properly by running the command wine –version.

Once Wine is installed, you can proceed with the installation of Microsoft PowerPoint.

You will need to download the Microsoft PowerPoint installer and save it to your computer.

Once the installer has been downloaded, you can run it using the Wine software.

To do this, open a terminal window and navigate to the directory where the installer is saved.

Then, type in the command wine msiexec /i [installer filename].msi and press enter.

This will begin the installation process.

Once the installation is complete, you should be able to open and use Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu without any issues.

Downloading the Microsoft PowerPoint Installer

Once you have Wine successfully installed, the next step is to download the Microsoft PowerPoint installer.

There are a few different ways to do this, but the easiest is to use the Wine software.

To begin, open the Wine software and select Install a Windows Application from the drop-down menu.

This will bring up a search bar where you can type in Microsoft PowerPoint and select the correct version for your system.

Once you have selected the correct version, click Download and the installer will begin downloading.

Once the download is complete, you can proceed to the installation step.

Make sure that you have downloaded the correct version of the software for your system or you may experience compatibility issues.

Installing Microsoft PowerPoint using Wine

Installing Microsoft PowerPoint using Wine is a relatively straightforward process.

First, you need to install the compatibility layer Wine, which allows Windows applications to run on Ubuntu.

To do this, you can open a terminal window and type in sudo apt-get install wine to install the package.

Once Wine is installed, you can then download the Microsoft PowerPoint installer from the Microsoft website.

Once the installer is downloaded, you can then open it using Wine.

This will launch the Microsoft PowerPoint installer, which will walk you through the installation process.

During the installation, you will be asked to accept the EULA and to select the features and components you would like to install.

Once you have completed the installation, you should be able to open and use Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu without any issues.

It is important to note that Wine is not always a perfect solution for running Windows applications on Ubuntu.

Some applications may not work as expected or may behave differently than they would on a Windows machine.

Therefore, it is important to test out applications in a virtual machine before using them in production on Ubuntu.

Launching Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu

Launching Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu is a straightforward process that requires a few steps to get up and running.

First, you will need to install Wine, a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on Ubuntu.

Wine is a free and open source software that enables Windows applications to run on Linux-based operating systems.

After installing Wine, you can download the Microsoft PowerPoint installer and run it using the Wine software.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Troubleshooting common issues is an important part of the installation process for Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu.

While the installation process is generally straightforward, things can sometimes go wrong.

Here are a few tips to help you troubleshoot any issues you may encounter.

First, make sure that you have the latest version of Wine installed.

If it is an older version, it may not be compatible with the latest version of PowerPoint.

You can check the version of Wine by typing the command wine –version in the terminal.

If PowerPoint is not opening properly, make sure that you have the correct architecture installed.

On 32-bit systems, you will need to install the 32-bit version of Wine and the 32-bit version of PowerPoint.

On 64-bit systems, you will need to install the 64-bit version of Wine and the 64-bit version of PowerPoint.

If you are having issues with the installation process, it may be because Wine is not configured correctly.

To fix this, open the Wine Configuration tool and make sure that the Windows Version is set to Windows 10 or Windows 8.1.

Finally, make sure that you have the correct version of the Microsoft PowerPoint installer.

Different versions of PowerPoint require different installers.

For example, if you want to install PowerPoint 2019, you will need the Microsoft PowerPoint 2019 installer.

If you follow these tips, you should be able to install and use Microsoft PowerPoint in Ubuntu without any issues.

If you are still having issues, you can search online for more detailed instructions or contact Microsoft directly for help.

Thanks for your article. 1) LibreOffice Impress – doesn’t have object inheritance. So when using cut and paste of an object, it’s properties are not copied. This can be a real pain where there are many objects on one slide. Other tools do this. 2) Google Slides is not a Linux desktop app. Plus – it has far fewer important features compared to other tools, especially animation. Personally I use SoftMaker. It comes at a cost, but is feature-rich and highly MS-Office compatible.

6 best operating systems for Raspberry Pi 5

T hanks to their small size, decently capable specs, and large community, the Raspberry Pi SBCs remain some of the best devices for home projects. Like the average desktop, the operating system is one aspect every mainline entry in the Raspberry Pi lineup needs to function.

Fortunately, you have a lot to choose from, as these tiny boards are compatible with a host of operating systems. Having spent a long time tinkering with my RPi 5, here are six of my favorite OS you need to use on the latest member of the popular SBC family.

Raspberry Pi 5 review: The holy grail of DIY projects got even better (and rarer)

Windows 11 arm edition, who says you can only run linux on the raspberry pi.

Even though it has been nearly seven years since Microsoft debuted Windows on Arm, there has been a noticeable lack of ARM-powered laptops. The situation is even worse for SBCs like the Raspberry Pi, which aren’t even on Microsoft’s radar. Luckily, the talented team at WoR project managed to find a way to install Windows 11 on Raspberry Pi boards.

Of course, there are a couple of caveats, including a lack of support for Ethernet and incompatibility with the RPI’s GPIO pins. Plus, installing Windows 11 for the Pi 5 is a job and a half as you need to use two storage drives: one for the operating system and another for the RPi5 UEFI. But if you have the patience and the grit to go through with the installation procedure, you’d be pleasantly surprised at how well the ARM version of Windows 11 runs on the palm-sized computer.

How to install Windows 11 on your Raspberry Pi

No reason to stick to desktop interfaces.

While we’re on the subject of emulation, you can even run an Android operating system on your Raspberry Pi. Developer KonstaKANG has been porting the mobile and Android TV variants of LineageOS for quite some time. The basic versions of both operating systems are decent enough if you want a barebones OS that works with your Raspberry Pi’s touchscreen display.

However, everything changes once you install Google Play or another app store. Suddenly, you have a fully functional device that can run your favorite Android games and APK applications.

For all your emulation needs

When I was looking for a way to set up emulators on the Raspberry Pi , I came across multiple operating systems that could scratch that itch. However, each software had its caveats: Lakka includes a gorgeous PlayStation-like UI, though it didn’t include Kodi functionality. Batocera is easy to set up, though it lacks a web interface.

Then there’s Recalbox, which perfectly balances customizability, performance, and functionality while packing a simplistic UI. Retro-Pie is the only OS that’s more feature-laden than Recalbox, but it requires you to master terminal commands to get the most out of it. Plus, I encountered some trouble connecting newer controllers to Retro-Pie, while Recalbox worked out-of-the-box with all of my first and third-party gamepads.

Video streaming on a budget

Although the Raspberry Pi 5 can’t compete with a PC when it comes to real-time transcoding workloads, it makes for an excellent media server. Just like emulation, there are a ton of operating systems that can help you set up local video streaming with your RPi 5.

However, the Kodi-based LibreELEC distro is one of the best, as it includes all the features you’ll need in a media server without requiring you to jump through several hoops to set it up.

The golden standard for Linux operating systems

With Ubuntu being the OS pretty much every Linux user is acquainted with, it had to be placed this high up in the list. Performance-wise, Ubuntu works reasonably well on the Raspberry Pi boards. The ARM variant of Ubuntu is pretty much identical to the desktop version, down to the apps and the overall UI. So, it’s easy to use for beginners as well as those familiar with Ubuntu’s classic desktop interface.

If you prefer a command-line interface over a GUI OS, you can even choose the Ubuntu Server. Sadly, it’s still not quite as fast as the official Raspberry Pi OS, though it’s a pretty solid alternative if you want a more modern desktop UI.

How to install Ubuntu on your Raspberry Pi

Raspberry pi os, it’s bound to be great when it’s named after the device.

Finally, we have the Raspberry Pi OS, which has been developed specifically for the RPi boards. Since its debut in 2012, the Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) has become the operating system of choice for many RPi board users. Since it was hand-crafted for the Raspberry Pi SBCs, it’s faster than Ubuntu and light years ahead of Windows 11 in terms of performance. Moreover, most projects tend to favor Raspberry Pi OS over the alternatives. So, it’s possible to run into compatibility and stability issues if you attempt to use any other operating system when attempting to replicate the projects created by the lively Raspberry Pi community.

You won’t be disappointed with the Raspberry Pi OS if you prefer a more minimalist UI. That said, despite including pretty much everything you need to use to make the most of your RPi SBC, the Raspberry Pi OS isn't as user-friendly as Ubuntu. Therefore, you might have some time getting the hang of things if it’s your first time using the OS.

There’s plenty more to choose from!

Those were some operating systems that every Raspberry Pi 5 owner should try out at least once, though many other distributions work well with the device. While some, like Recalbox and LibreELEC, are only good for specific use cases, others, like Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi OS, are good for pretty much every scenario. The latter, in particular, is so robust that it can be used for light workloads and everyday tasks.

Since the Raspberry Pi 5 is a relatively newer board, there are a couple of distros that haven’t been ported over yet. For instance, OpenVaultMedia (OVM) still doesn’t support the RPi 5, meaning you’ll have to go through a rather cumbersome procedure if you want to use the tiny device as a budget NAS device . Likewise, my favorite underrated Linux distro, NixOS, doesn’t fully support the newest Raspberry Pi board and is prone to stability issues that are bound to go away in the near future.
