PhD programmes

When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.

phd in urban planning in sweden

“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne

So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.

How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.

Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

Urban design and planning.

The Urban Design and Planning division researches and educates in urban design and planning in all scales, from single urban spaces to larger urban landscape and entire regions, with its’ main focus on built environment in relation to sustainable development. Cities and regions today are facing great challenges regarding sustainable development, with ongoing large scale urban development projects and a need to handle societal challenges such as climate change, urbanisation processes, increasing regional imbalance, segregation and gentrification processes. Thus, cities and regions today face large challenges that architects and planners need to handle in their daily practice and there is a great need for new knowledge within the field.

In our research and education, three complementary knowledge traditions meet:

  • Practice based knowledge and generative methods, focusing on developing sustainable urban design and planning solutions
  • Quantitative, analytical methods, focusing on describing effects of different urban strategies
  • Critical, interpreting methods, focusing on understanding the built environment in a broader societal context.

The research activities of the division is mainly conducted within, but also cross, three research groups:

phd in urban planning in sweden

Urban and Regional Transformations

The Urban and Regional Transformations research group, focusing on spatial inequalities and uneven geographic development using both discursive and spatial approaches

phd in urban planning in sweden

The Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG)

SMoG is concerned with the interaction between form (the built environment) and society (people, processes) using methods and theories central to spatial morphology, space syntax, urban analytics and informatics.

The Dialogue in urban complexity research group, focusing on compact cities from different perspectives, such as spatial analysis, systems thinking, actor network theory, complexity theory, social inclusion and regenerative design.

The division educates in urban design and planning on the bachelor and master level. The education in urban design and planning led by the division addresses contemporary and complex urban design and planning issues with the overall goal to develop the students’ ability to describe, analyse and form sustainable urban design and planning solutions. On the master level, the division is responsible for two master studios within the master program Architecture and Urban Design; Architecture and Urban Space Design and Spatial Morphology studio , and two master studios within the master program Architecture and Planning Beyond Sustainability; Planning and Design in a Local Context and Planning and Design for Social Inclusion .

Altogether, the different research and educational areas illuminate contemporary urban design and planning issues from a broad perspective, focusing on both the political reality of power relations and the concrete design of the built environment.

Sustainable Urban Planning and Design at KTH

The programme brings together students of architecture, planning, civil engineering and natural and social sciences. You are equipped with theoretical knowledge and professional tools that position them as critical links, joining multiple perspectives in sustainable planning and design processes relevant in Sweden and worldwide. Coursework includes substantial time spent in studios and on projects that train you in practical skills and give you a deep understanding of planning and design practice.

The programme offers three specialisations pursued through recommended course combinations, representing different professional competencies in sustainable urban planning and design. You can also broaden your knowledge by making your own combinations of courses. During the programme, students interact across the specialisations in courses and projects that foster a mutual exchange of knowledge and ideas.

  • Specialisations

Urban Planning and Design Urban and Regional Planning Environment and Planning

All students take part in the introduction course that presents the subject and deepens their understanding of how planning and design practices can enhance sustainable urban development. After this course, you choose one of the specialisations with recommended courses addressing different methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of urban design and planning. The spring semester includes a mandatory course that aims to develop students' research skills within the scope of the programme.

The third semester deepens the students' specialisation by integrating accumulated knowledge into applied project work. Projects are supported by several core courses highlighting conceptual and analytical approaches. The programme concludes with a degree project carried out in the fourth semester. The degree project allows you to investigate a problem in-depth under the supervision of experienced practitioners and researchers.

Throughout the programme, invited lecturers from local/regional authorities, consultancies, and other private actors will give students insights into the contemporary practice of planning and design in Sweden and abroad. In studios and on project assignments, you work with ongoing city development projects in the Stockholm region, which allow you to apply your knowledge in sustainable planning and design in a practical setting.

This is a two-year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Architecture and Built Environment (at KTH).

Topics covered

Urban planning, social sustainability, regional development, public space, urban form, green cities, community participation, sustainable transport, urbanism, resilience.

Courses in the programme

Find out what students from the programme think about their time at KTH.

"One of the programme's best features is its flexibility, allowing students to customize their studies based on their interests. This break from the traditional approach is empowering, as it has allowed me to have more control of my career path."

Shahpara from Pakistan

Meet the students

The programme prepares students as professionals in a growing and meaningful field, building a thorough understanding of the planning and design process and aesthetic, social, environmental, economic and institutional factors that contribute to sustainable urban development. Graduates from this programme work with urban and regional planning, environmental planning and urban design in public organisations, private companies, research institutes and NGOs. Examples of public organisations are municipalities responsible for urban planning and development, regional development authorities, environmental protection authorities and national transport administrations, which employ nearly half of the graduates. The private sector, which includes architectural, planning and policy consultancy firms and project developers, employs almost half of the graduates. The remaining 5–10 per cent go on to doctoral studies at KTH and abroad or work in NGOs.

After graduation

City architect, urban planner, project leader, sustainability consultant, architect, traffic planner, urban designer, environmental planner.

"My duties as a Sustainability Manager are twofold – firstly to develop and integrate our sustainability strategy in all parts of the business, and secondly to develop and oversee different sustainability initiatives in one of our portfolios for commercial real estate."

Simon Iaffa NylĂŠn, Brunswick Real Estate

Meet the graduates

Sustainable development

Graduates from KTH have the knowledge and tools for moving society in a more sustainable direction, as sustainable development is an integral part of all programmes. The three key sustainable development goals addressed by the master's programme in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design are:

Equity and equality are core qualities of sustainable societies, involving, for example, equal access to housing, public services and transport systems. The causes and consequences of inequality are analysed in courses such as Introduction to Urban Economics and Planning Theory and Urban Governance. In project courses, students will learn to address equality issues in urban planning and design.

Cities and communities are the objects of study in the programme, with sustainability as the goal. Throughout the programme, you will be introduced to different tools, methods and concepts that will enable you to address sustainability issues in local contexts and to develop strategies and solutions that contribute to sustainable cities and communities.

To minimise the environmental impact of urban development, innovative solutions are required. Through exercises and lectures, students will be encouraged to incorporate new technologies, sustainable materials and green solutions, and strategies that reduce the need for urban expansion in their proposals to enhance ecosystem services and sustainable management of natural resources.

  • Faculty and research

The programme spans disciplines within an increasingly important field within the KTH School of Architecture and the Built Environment. Gabin kundwa - class of 2024.

Headshot of Gabin Kundwa

Area of Study: Master of Urban and Regional Planning Concentration: Transportation Planning

What did you do before you joined the masters program? I completed a B.S. in Integrated Science at the University of Nebraska.

Why did you choose to attend the University of Iowa School of Planning and Public Affairs (SPPA)? As an international student, I noticed the urban planning program at the University of Iowa is designated as STEM which will give me extended time to pursue visa sponsorship. I realized I made a good decision when I joined the program and found out how it was organized and the help that's offered for obtaining career opportunities.

What excites you the most about being a part of the Iowa City community? My basic needs are within walking distance, with a great downtown which has many activities going on, especially in the summer and the fall. Iowa City is safe and the people are nice. I came to know and connect with many people.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing a master's in urban planning at the School of Planning and Public Affairs? The University of Iowa planning program is great, especially the small class sizes which makes it easier for students to connect with and get help from their professors. SPPA also has great connections with alumni and the best career services on campus which helps in internship and job searching. For future international students, the program is diverse and is STEM designated.

An ambassador with big plans

Originally from louisiana, trevian ambroise, a graduate student ambassador for penn’s stuart weitzman school of design, chose philadelphia as the place to study economic development techniques to become a well-rounded planner..

Trevian Ambroise is a graduate student ambassador in the City & Regional Planning’s Public Private Development at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design . He is also a GAPSA representative for the Weitzman School, co-president of the Black Planners Society, and a member of the Weitzman School Real Estate Club. Originally from Saint Martinville, Louisiana, Ambroise became interested in the built environment and how people interact with their surroundings.

Trevian AMbroise.

“My hometown of Saint Martinville, with its quaint historic district and population of 5,000, has experienced periods of change, deep racial divisions, and economic stagnation. Still, being raised in this place, especially one so interconnected with neighboring cities in a broader cultural/geographical/economic region, I became keen that the stories of St. Martinville are not separate, but instead are part of how place is understood and how built environments can become active when centering (comm)unity.”

What drew Ambroise to study at Penn was the city itself. “I was drawn more to Weitzman Planning simply due to Philadelphia and the applicability of learning from the city and wider region to become a well-rounded planner and engage authentically in equity-centered and justice-driven work.”
