Melinda French Gates to donate $1 billion over next 2 years in support of women’s rights

(AP) - Melinda French Gates says she will be donating $1 billion over the next two years to individuals and organizations working on behalf of women and families globally, including on reproductive rights in the United States.

French Gates earlier this month announced she would step down from the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , and vowed to focus on  women and families .

French Gates, one of the biggest philanthropic supporters of gender equity in the U.S., said Tuesday in a guest essay for The New York Times that she’s been frustrated over the years by people who say it’s not the right time to talk about gender equality.

“Decades of research on economics, well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone,” she wrote.

French Gates touched upon the high maternal mortality rates in the U.S., noting that Black and Native American mothers are at the highest risk.

“Women in 14 states have lost the right to terminate a pregnancy under almost any circumstances. We remain the only advanced economy without any form of national paid family leave. And the number of teenage girls experiencing suicidal thoughts and persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness is at a decade high,” she said.

French Gates said over the last few weeks she’s started directing new grants through her organization, Pivotal Ventures, to groups working in the U.S. to protect women’s rights and advance their power and influence. The groups include the National Women’s Law Center, the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures is a limited liability company that also manages investments for profit ventures, so there is little public information about its grantmaking or the assets it manages. Pivotal Ventures has focused on a number of avenues to increase women’s economic and political participation and power, like closing the wage gap, compensating care work often done by women and encouraging women to run for political office.

Looking ahead, French Gates plans to introduce a $250 million initiative in the fall that will concentrate on improving the mental and physical health of women and girls worldwide.

French Gates will be leaving the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation  next week. She helped co-found the organization nearly 25 years ago.

The Associated Press receives financial support for news coverage in Africa from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and for news coverage of women in the workforce and state governments from Pivotal Ventures.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will change its name to the Gates Foundation. It is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world. As of December 2023, its endowment was $75.2 billion, thanks to donations from Gates and the billionaire investor Warren Buffett. While it works across many issues, global health remains its largest area of work, and most of its funding is meant to address issues internationally rather than in the U.S.

Notre Dame 2025 Class Moves Up To 2nd In ESPN Rankings

• Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame continues to recruit at a very high level, and the 2025 class continues that strong recruiting surge that began when Marcus Freeman arrived in South Bend. Notre Dame has the No. 1 ranked class in the country according to Rivals and 247Sports, and the class just got a big bump from ESPN.

After previously ranking 4th in the ESPN Class Rankings, the Notre Dame 2025 class jumped up to 2nd in the most recent rankings update. Only Ohio State ranks ahead of the Fighting Irish, who jumped ahead of LSU and Clemson after landing Dallas Golden and Gordy Sulfsted since the last rankings update.

Here is what ESPN had to say about the Irish class:

"The Fighting Irish created buzz with their transfer portal pickup of  Riley Leonard  at quarterback, but they continue to add young talent to develop at the position. They signed top-five 2024 quarterback  C.J. Carr  and have Knight, one of the top signal-callers in the 2025 class. He's a lefty who pairs good arm strength and mobility with nice physical tools and upside.  Justin Thurman  is a running back with a good blend of speed, quickness and explosiveness, which he demonstrated by posting consistently strong testing numbers over the past two camp cycles.

"Landing  James Flanigan , an ESPN 300 prospect, continues Notre Dame's tradition of identifying and developing tight ends.  Ivan Taylor  is a key defensive pickup. He also has good genes as his father, Ike, won two Super Bowls. Ivan displays solid technique for this stage and good speed." - Craig Haubert, ESPN

Taylor and quarterback Deuce Knight are the two highest ranked players in the class according to ESPN. Taylor ranks as the nation's No. 35 overall player, and he's the only Top 100 recruit in the Irish class according to ESPN.

Later this afternoon, cornerback Mark Zackery is expected to make a commitment to either Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida or Cincinnati. He ranks as the No. 257 overall player according to ESPN, which means the class would be bolstered even more if the Irish are able to land that commitment.

Writing essays is an important skill in expression that children need to develop. The ‘describe your family’ essay is a topic that can help your child understand the style better, as it is about a topic they know and love. It would also help children develop an understanding of the concept of family and the type of relationships in it. Here, we look at an essay on My Family for Grade 2. Going through the examples in this article can help them get ideas for their own essay on the subject.

Keep these things in mind when you write an essay about your family:

• Keep the essay simple since any complexity can cut the flow of ideas.
• Write everything that comes to your mind. The essay can be filtered and polished later on.
• Once you have noted down enough ideas to support the necessary length, think about elaborating and decorating, if necessary.
• Write in simple English and try to use short sentences.
• Avoid deviating from the topic. It happens to all writers, so make sure to keep it within the family!

Sentences should be concise, and you should convey the idea in one or two sentences and not carry it to the next line. Here’s how you can write the essay in just 10 lines: 

• A family is a unit of related people who live together, and their relationship is by birth or blood.
• I live in a big combined family with my parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts. My cousins also live in the same building.
• My father is a businessman who often travels abroad to run his company. My mother is a housewife and takes care of all of us.
• My grandfather is a retired government employee who worked for the railways. He always has amazing stories about his experiences from his days working on trains.
• My uncle is a police officer, and he helps people in need and catches bad guys.
• The school that I go to is close to my house. My mom sometimes walks with me to school, and my uncle sometimes drops me off in the morning.
• Everyone in our community likes my family. We often have guests from the neighbourhood who come to talk to my grandpa.
• I am an only child, and sometimes I wish I had a brother or sister, like my cousins do.
• My family celebrates festivals with other families in the community. We always have fun during Holi and Diwali.
• My mother is a smart woman. She knows all about my subjects in school and helps me out with homework.

A short essay is a little more difficult than writing a short paragraph on my family. Unlike the one-line essays above, short essays require the flow to be maintained, from one sentence to the other.

My family is very important to me and precious. We’re a joint family, so my parents, my grandparents, and me live together. The time I spend with my grandparents is very special, and I adore spending time with them, especially my grandfather, who always has great stories about his youth and stories from the epics. We often spend time sitting on the balcony talking. After playtime with my dog Tommy, he teaches me math and science in the evening.

My father, who is quite tall, is a businessman, and my mother is a homemaker. I love my parents deeply, and they love me. We all eat dinner together and watch TV afterward. My grandmother loves to tell me stories before bedtime, and I love her moral stories with animals and people. My grandmother is also an outstanding cook because nobody can cook food as delicious as she can. On weekends we go out to the movies and the mall. My grandparents don’t always accompany us to the mall, but it is always fun when they do. My family is supportive, and I always strive to do my best to make them proud.

Writing a long essay requires some practice to maintain context and clarity. Move from one topic to the other slowly and add good quality information. You can start writing everything that comes to your mind and then arrange the points to give it a good flow.

I love my family more than anything in this world. Strong families are an important unit of society since children learn about their culture, tradition, and social values from their elders. So, I believe that good families form the backbone of great societies. At an individual level, families teach good behavior and habits, which we will remember for the rest of our lives.

I feel that I am very fortunate to have been born in a family that is well respected in my society and community. I come from a middle-class family with six members. Our family consists of my parents, grandparents, younger sister, and myself. My parents are polite people, and we follow the directions of our grandparents in important matters. My grandparents have lived longer than all of us and have gained enough life experience and wisdom to lead the family.

My grandfather is a retired army man. He has served our country and is respected by everyone in the community. He has strong values, which he says are important for the growth and development of both the family and the country. My grandfather always talks about bravery and being forthright in all aspects of life. He also has a gentle and nurturing side that makes him a very pleasant person. And just like him, my grandmother is an equally strong woman who raised all my uncles and aunts during years of hardships and uncertainty. She is also a hardworking and caring woman who tells me good stories before bedtime.

My father works in a bank – he is an important man who handles the finances of important people. My mother is a homemaker and enjoys taking care of us all. She always talks about the importance of hard work and honesty. My sister is still a baby, and I love playing with her. My family is very loving and a source of motivation for me. My family is always there for me when I need love, care, and comfort.

The forecast for state softball looks pleasant for Friday, with high temps in the mid-70s and no precipitation. Looks like about a 35 percent chance of rain overnight into Saturday, but the temps will stay in the 60s and 70s. Shawnee mission school district cancels class for two schools due to lack of power.

On Tuesday, the Shawnee Mission School District canceled classes for Briarwood Elementary School and Prairie Elementary due to a lack of power.

It comes after weekend storms knocked out power to over 100,000 people. Evergy notified the school district overnight that it did not expect to have the lights on at school in time for class.

Because of the cancellation, no before or after school care will be available at either school's building.

The district hopes to have power restored at some point today so that students can be in class for their last day of the school year.

Evergy has line crews from Joplin, Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin to try and get the power back on.
