How will my application be assessed?

SQA PhD Scholarship: Primary, Supplementary and Supplementary Extension Streams

Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Candidate experience including academic merit, experience in quantum technology and / or any professional expertise
  • Quality of the proposed project including relevance to quantum technology and / or alignment to the research strengths of the proposed partner institution
  • Alignment of the application to SQA objectives including industry engagement, cross-institutional supervision and / or the potential to contribute to the growth of Sydney’s quantum ecosystem.

Consideration will also be given to supervisor capacity, diversity of applicants and the diversity of the proposed supervisors (early to mid-career supervisors and supervisors who identify as women).

The SQA encourages applications from women, Indigenous Australians, applicants with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disability, and from those who identify as LGBTIQ. We welcome applicants to include this information as part of their applications.

Applications will be assessed by researchers and academics within the four partner universities through a competitive assessment process. You should ensure that all information conveyed in your application can be understood by someone within and outside your sub-discipline.

SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship

Applications will be assessed by SQA and CSIRO, based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the proposed project including relevance to quantum technology and alignment to the proposed project by UNSW and CSIRO supervisors.
  • Candidate experience including academic merit, experience in quantum technology and / or any professional experience

What is SQA career development funding (CDF)?

  • All SQA PhD scholarship students (Primary, Supplementary, Supplementary Extension and PhD Experience) will have access to a pool of SQA career development funds held locally at your university. The approval processes and availability of funds will depend on your university who manage the process.  The intention of this funding is not to replace funding you may already be eligible to receive (e.g., you may already have support for a laptop from your research group), but rather to provide you with opportunities you may not have been able to access without the SQA CDF - such as specialist training.
  • SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship students will have access to career development funding.

How do I know which stipend scholarship type I am eligible for?

  •  Please refer to the eligibility requirements in the drop-down menu above. When you submit your application, you will have the option to select if you're applying for a SQA PhD Scholarship or SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship. You do not need to declare which SQA PhD scholarship stream you want to apply for. Based on the answers you provide in your application, we will determine which type of stipend scholarship (Primary, Supplementary, Supplementary Extension) you are eligible for.

Can I apply for both the SQA PhD scholarships and the SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship?

  • Yes, you can. In the application form, you will be asked which scholarship you wish to apply for, and you can select either or both.

How many rounds are there per year?

  • We typically hold two scholarship rounds per year – one in April and another in September. You can subscribe to our mailing list to be notified when scholarship rounds open.

How do I know if my research area sufficiently relates to quantum tech?

  • As quantum tech can span various disciplines and areas, the best person to answer this question is your proposed supervisor.

My supervisor is not on the SQA expert list – does this matter?

  • You are most welcome to apply with a supervisor who is not on the SQA expert list, but you still must have a supervisor from an SQA university, and the project must be sufficiently related to quantum tech.

Do I have to come to Australia, or can I do my PhD entirely remotely and apply for a scholarship?

  • As per the requirements of your university candidature (see their degree resolutions for details), you will need to do your PhD largely in Australia. You may be able to be overseas for a period within this or commence offshore for a period of time. If you are an international student, you will need an Australia visa granted before you can enrol.

What are the selection criteria?

  • Details are available above – under ‘How will my application be assessed?’

Is there an IELTS requirement for a scholarship application?

  • There is no SQA specific requirement for IELTS. You will need to adhere to the IELTS requirements of your chosen SQA university however, to be admitted for your PhD. SQA university PhD admission will be required to receive your scholarship, should you be awarded.

Do I need to include my co-supervisor in my application?

  • It is not required if you have not organised a co-supervisor at the time of application. You are most welcome to note your co-supervisor in your application if you have one organised.

Can I start my application form and save it to finish it later?

  • Depending on your browser – it should remember you and let you return to the same spot. However, if you open it up on a different browser or device, it likely won’t remember you, so make sure to keep a copy of anything you worry about losing to be safe.

I’ve accidentally submitted something incorrect on my application – how do I update this?

  • If you submit multiple applications, we will use the latest application you submitted before the deadline in the assessment and selection process. If you are having trouble accessing the form after your first submission (i.e., the link takes you to a thank you for submitting page), if you open the link using a different browser application (e.g. Firefox instead of Chrome) and it should let you access the form anew. Alternatively, you can also email [email protected]  with your updated information.

Can I apply for an SQA scholarship and another scholarship at the same time?

  • Yes, you can. However, should you be successful for another scholarship it may change your eligibility in terms of SQA scholarship types. For example, should you receive a non-SQA primary stipend (e.g., an RTP) since your application, you would no longer be eligible for an SQA Primary Scholarship, but you still may be eligible for an SQA Supplementary Scholarship.

Can I do an internship during my PhD?

  • For the SQA PhD Scholarships, we are very supportive of you doing an internship during your candidature –  we have more information on internships here .  Note, you will likely need to get approval from your supervisor and university and follow any of their requirements.

Can I get a second extension (past 4 years) if my thesis is delayed?

  • In general, no. This is due to most university degree resolutions stating that four years full time (not including extended leave or suspensions of study) is the maximum candidature length. See your university’s degree resolutions for details.

Can I reapply if I am unsuccessful?

  • Yes, you are most welcome to reapply in future rounds, as long as you still fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Can I get feedback on my application?

  • Unfortunately, we cannot provide feedback on your application.

Can I apply if I am a cotutelle students with an SQA university and another university?

  • Yes, you can apply. Should you be successful however, the SQA PhD Scholarship stipend would only cover the period you are in Sydney and based at the SQA university.

I have another question not answered here – who can I ask?

Senior Earns Prestigious Boren Fellowship Award

After she graduates with her bachelor’s degree in international affairs in May, Allison Mahr ’24 will head to the Republic of Georgia with the support of a Boren National Security Fellowship. She’s excited to use the award to build her skills and, ultimately, make an impact in the post-conflict reconstruction of the region.

April 25, 2024

By Renee Chmiel, Office of Marketing and Communications

Allison Mahr ’24 (front, left) visited Paris while studying abroad in Italy.

When Allison Mahr ’24 was a first-year student at the University of New Haven, she knew she wanted to apply for a Boren National Security Fellowship . She did just that during her senior year, and as she was preparing to graduate, she learned she’d been selected for the prestigious award.

An international affairs major , Mahr had been, in a way, preparing for the fellowship throughout her time as a Charger. As a member of the University’s award-winning Model United Nations program for four semesters, she honed her understanding of policy and diplomacy on an international level. She also studied at the University’s campus in Prato, Italy , as a sophomore, gaining experience living and learning abroad.

Mahr will bring together the many exciting experiences she’s had as a Charger during her fellowship. She’ll be studying in Tbilisi, Georgia, as part of a program run by American Councils, an organization focused on international education. She’ll split her time between studying Ukrainian, conducting research, and volunteering.

“This fellowship is the perfect opportunity to take what I’ve learned studying international affairs and Russian at the University and apply it in a real-world context,” she said. “I plan to partner with an organization that works with Ukrainian refugees in Georgia, and I hope to take what I learn from that experience and apply it to my own personal research on post-conflict reconstruction.”

Allison Mahr ’24 (left) with her fellow Chargers at a conference at UMass Amherst.

Making an impact

Mahr has already gained valuable experience conducting research as a Charger. She took the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from Matthew Schmidt, Ph.D. , who has become a trusted mentor. They’ve submitted their work, which examines post-conflict reconstruction in Ukraine, for academic publication. She says the experience taught her about all facets of research, while helping her to sharpen her analytical skills.

Mahr began building those skills during her first year as a Charger, and her internship with SafeAbroad , a security service based in New Haven, proved to be a particularly important way for her to gain experience while making a meaningful impact. As an intern, she was working as an intelligence analyst when Russia attacked Ukraine. She recalls being one of the only staff members who knew any Russian or Ukrainian. She immediately jumped into action.

“I was very quickly in charge of the company’s efforts monitoring the conflict,” she recalls. “I remember staying up 3 to 4 days straight to be able to monitor everything that was going on in Ukraine during the day while still going to classes and doing homework.

Allison Mahr ’24 (left) and Sydney Altieri ’25 in their Model United Nations class.

“I actually had the opportunity to help evacuate the family of one of the professors at the University,” she continued. “I was monitoring troop movements and helping them find a safe evacuation route to Poland.”

‘My goal...’

Her experiences sparked Mahr’s interest in post-conflict reconstruction. It also set her on the path to pursuing the Boren award. She’s among several Chargers who have received highly competitive Boren scholarships in recent years, including Angélica Cruz ’21 , Kristy Santana ’19 , and Mahr’s classmate Sarah Middleton ’24 , who received the National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarship last year.

After she completes her bachelor’s degree and her international fellowship, Mahr will pursue a master’s degree in public policy at the Ford School at the University of Michigan. She’s excited to draw on her education, experience, and passion to make an impact on the lives of people in the region where she’ll be completing her fellowship.

“Ultimately, my goal is to work in post-conflict reconstruction and help to rebuild Ukraine once the war with Russia is over,” she said. “Understanding the languages – both Russian and Ukrainian – and the culture by working with Ukrainian refugees is vital to crafting policies that will genuinely help those affected.”

Understanding the costs of a research degree

Your costs as a research student may vary depending on if you’re a domestic or international student.

The cost of your UTS degree depends on the course you choose and whether you’re a domestic or international student. It's important to read all fee information that applies to you before using the tuition fee calculator, to gain a full understanding of your fees.

The costs of your degree will be different if you're a domestic or international student.

Domestic student fees

Domestic students who are offered entry to a graduate research degree will have the cost of their tuition fees covered by the  Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship . If you are granted an RTP Fee Offset Scholarship you are not required to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of time allowable to complete your study*.

  • Doctoral degree: 4 years full time or 8 years part time
  • Masters by Research degree: 2 years full time or 4 years part time

To be eligible to receive an RTP Fee Offset, a domestic applicant must be:

  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen; and
  • commencing or enrolled in a graduate research degree (for which RTP support is available) at UTS; and
  • within the maximum candidature period*; and
  • not receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth Government that is designed to offset research course tuition fees.

*A student's maximum period of RTP Scholarship support is based on the student's HDR course commencement date (which may or may not have occurred at a previous university, and may or may not have been supported through the RTP).  If you have studied, but not completed, a Higher Degree by Research at UTS or another institution, please contact the Graduate Research School to confirm your remaining EFTSL.  Students who commenced at UTS in or after the Autumn 2018 session and exceed their EFTSL, will be liable for the Domestic HDR Overtime Levy.  Please refer to  RTP Fees Offset overtime and special consideration (domestic students only)  for further details.  You may also be eligible to apply for a  Domestic HDR overtime levy scholarship .

Tuition fees and RTP load for postgraduate research degrees are charged pro-rata, based on the number of days you are enrolled in each research degree session and whether you are enrolled after the research census date.

International student fees

International higher degree research students are required to pay tuition fees, unless they are covered by an International Research Training Program Scholarship (IRTP), or a UTS International Research Scholarship (IRS).  Details of these scholarships can be found on the  Scholarships  page.

International student course fees are calculated per unit of study.

All students  are required to pay an  annual Student Services and Amenities fee  in each in addition to their tuition costs. This fee covers non-academic services for UTS students, such as recreational activities, legal advice, and access to the UTS health and counselling services.

Research students may also incur additional additional fees and charges relating to their research, such as travel, training and professional development costs. These fees vary from student to student and are not included in your tuition fees. Administrative fees may also be charged for other items.

Aligned programme of study: PhD in Population and Health Data Science

Mode of study: Full-time

Project description:

Healthcare decision-making has previously focussed on developing recommendations for single conditions. However, standardised care for each chronic condition in isolation can be inappropriate for individuals living with multiple long-term conditions known as multimorbidity, and may lead to unnecessary polypharmacy. This PhD studentship aims to develop a modelling framework to estimate the natural history of disease in individuals living with multiple long-term conditions using population-scale, linked, electronic health records from the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank Wales Multimorbidity e-Cohort ( Lyons et al , 2021 ). This approach will allow estimation of the potential adverse effects (such as hospitalisations) of drug-on-drug interactions for the treatment of multiple conditions and associated genetic, environmental, or demographic risk factors. Further this PhD project will compare the efficacy of different combinations of treatments used in people with multiple long-term conditions, and assess potential health inequalities.

Facilities

The PhD student will be based in Population Data Science at Swansea University with visiting PhD Student Status at the Department of Statistics at the University of Warwick, benefiting from the stimulating and supportive environment and bespoke training programmes. The successful candidate will receive training to develop their knowledge and expertise in statistical modelling, epidemiology, population data science and health technology assessment, with the opportunity for their research to directly inform healthcare policy and practice. The successful student will have the opportunity to present their work at national and international conferences and workshops.

This PhD is funded as part of the HDR UK Medicines in Acute and Chronic Care Driver Programme, which is a national collaboration that aims to understand and transform the use of medicines for patient benefit, and reduce medicines-associated harm. The Driver Programme has a particular focus on vulnerable populations including people living with multiple long-term conditions and those experiencing health inequalities. The successful candidate will be one of several PhD students contributing to the wider HDR UK Driver Programmes and will have the opportunity to collaborate with the wider HDR UK Driver Programme Team as well as access additional training and associated events hosted by HDR UK.

UB senior receives Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Published March 13, 2024

2023 Goldwater scholarship winner and UB biomedical engineering senior Sydney Swedick has added another prestigious fellowship to her extensive scholarly honors: the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which awards her a full scholarship to pursue a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge.

Swedick’s award is the first time since 2016 that a UB student has won this international award, according to Megan Stewart, director of UB’s Office of Fellowships and Scholarships.

“Sydney amazes me at everything she does, and winning the Gates Cambridge is a testament to her exceptional academic and leadership potential, and demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of others,” says Stewart.

“Winning this scholarship is an impressive feat, and it reflects the University at Buffalo’s commitment to academic excellence. It underscores its reputation as a diverse, inclusive scholarly community dedicated to bringing the benefits of our research to local and global communities.”

Swedick can be proud of her growing legacy and the object lesson she has become for other UB students — and the Cambridge Gates is just the latest example. About 1% of Gates Cambridge applicants receive the award, which comes with a “maintenance fee” stipend throughout her three-year PhD program, in addition to the full scholarship.

“Conducting this work and having this opportunity,” Swedick says, “is part of the next step toward me becoming a physician-scientist and leading in finding new therapies and treatments for those with peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries, while starting my own biotech company one day.”

Then there is her roll call of awards. So far Swedick’s academic honors include selection to the All-USA Academic Team while attending SUNY Schenectady, one of only 20 community college students in the country to receive this award, and the 2022 New Century Transfer Scholar Award — she was the top applicant in New York State — given to community college students demonstrating intellect and leadership. She was also one of 15 students selected for the Johns Hopkins University Amgen Scholar U.S. Program and one of only six in the nation to conduct research through the HEART/SHURP MD/PhD summer internship program at Harvard Medical School.

Not to mention the Goldwater, considered the most prestigious and competitive research scholarship offered for undergraduate STEM students. By the way, respected international rankings recognize Cambridge as the No. 2 university in the world.

That’s a partial list of her accomplishments. And she’s only 21 years old. Not bad for a native of Johnstown, a small city of 8,070 in upstate New York, whose ambitions include strengthening ties to her hometown and breaking down educational barriers.

Hometown ties

She says her life would look very different if it weren’t for her family — she has four siblings she is very close to — and lifelong friends.

“The odds were against me,” she says.

“It’s really, I think, a creation of all my siblings and my parents, and the work of us together because I really could not have done it without them.”

Swedick’s research interest in biomedical engineering and neurology, along with her hopes of entering a prominent medical school, trace back to her childhood, when she battled through serious medical conditions. When Swedick was just 12, she had two titanium rods and 11 screws placed in her spine during a 10-hour spinal fusion surgery. At that point, she knew she wanted to eventually go into biomedical research, which evolved into her present ambition to blend neurology and engineering as a physician-scientist.

Medical challenges followed her through high school and continued when she attended SUNY Schenectady. Swedick was diagnosed a couple years ago with severe forms of the autoimmune diseases Thyroid Eye Disease and Graves’ disease, immune system disorders that result in the overproduction of thyroid hormones, affecting many body systems. Her condition went undiagnosed for years because her symptoms were attributed to allergies.

The more she struggled with her health and the busier she got academically, the more she discovered the need for balance and what mattered in her life. Swedick says she believes she would have succeeded in her accomplishments, despite her health challenges, due to the work ethic and determination she received from her parents. These were the cards she was dealt, she says, and she would make the most of it. Yet, the struggles were important, as it provided her with a strong sense that the people in her life made it worth living, and she would take those she met along her journey wherever she went.

Advocating for educational equality

That sense of balance comes into play when she remembers the conversations she had with her high school friends about the world beyond Johnstown. She promises to continue to advocate for educational equity and bridging the disparities of the system — activism that began during her time at SUNY Schenectady.

While at the community college, she was an ambassador for the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), a state Department of Education program that aims to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who are pursuing professional licensure and careers in mathematics, science, technology and health-related fields. She also a member of the campus’ TRIO program, a U.S. Education Department outreach and student services program designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She plans to continue breaking down those same educational barriers while at Cambridge, where she hopes to volunteer at the Cambridge Science Centre, while joining sustainability organizations such as Cambridge Zero.

Even though her next step means moving halfway across the world, she remains steadfast to her hometown, from her family to her friends to the values still vivid from growing up in a small town at the base of the Adirondack Mountains. She isn’t leaving these people behind; she’s bringing pieces of them with her until she returns, once again, to help others in her situation.

“One day I will look to my sides and see my people standing firmly with me, and I will say we made it,” she says. “My people, we made it.”
