Paper money is an invention of the Song Dynasty in China in the 11th century CE, nearly 20 centuries after the earliest known use of metal coins. While paper money was certainly easier to carry in large amounts, using paper money had its risks: counterfeiting and inflation.

Earliest Money

The earliest known form of money is also from China, a cast copper coin from the 11th century BCE, which was found in a Shang Dynasty tomb in China. Metal coins, whether made from copper, silver, gold, or other metals, have been used across the globe as units of trade and value. They have advantages—they are durable, difficult to counterfeit, and they hold intrinsic value. The big disadvantage? If you have very many of them, they get heavy.

For a couple thousand years after the coins were buried in that Shang tomb, however, merchants, traders, and customers in China had to put up with carrying coins, or with bartering goods for other goods directly. Copper coins were designed with square holes in the middle so that they could be carried on a string. For large transactions, traders calculated the price as the number of coin strings. It was workable, but an unwieldy system at best.

Paper Money Takes the Load Off

During the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), however, merchants began to leave those heavy strings of coins with a trustworthy agent, who would record how much money the merchant had on deposit on a piece of paper. The paper, a sort of promissory note, could then be traded for goods, and the seller could go to the agent and redeem the note for the strings of coins. With trade renewed along the Silk Road, this simplified cartage considerably. These privately-produced promissory notes were still not true paper currency, however.

At the beginning of the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), the government licensed specific deposit shops where people could leave their coins and receive notes. In the 1100s, Song authorities decided to take direct control of this system, issuing the world's first proper, government-produced paper money. This money was called jiaozi . 

Jiaozi under the Song

The Song established factories to print paper money with woodblocks, using six colors of ink. The factories were located in Chengdu, Hangzhou, Huizhou, and Anqi, and each used different fiber mixes in their paper to discourage counterfeiting. Early notes expired after three years, and could only be used in particular regions of the Song Empire.

In 1265, the Song government introduced a truly national currency, printed to a single standard, usable across the empire, and backed by silver or gold. It was available in denominations between one and one hundred strings of coins. This currency lasted only nine years, however, because the Song Dynasty tottered, falling to the Mongols in 1279.

Mongol Influence

The Mongol Yuan Dynasty , founded by Kublai Khan (1215–1294), issued its own form of paper currency called chao; the Mongols brought it to Persia where it was called djaou  or djaw . The Mongols also showed it to Marco Polo (1254–1324) during his 17-year-long stay in Kublai Khan's court, where he was amazed by the idea of government-backed currency. However, the paper money was not backed by gold or silver. The short-lived Yuan Dynasty printed increasing amounts of the currency, leading to runaway inflation. This problem was unresolved when the dynasty collapsed in 1368.

Although the succeeding Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) also began by printing unbacked paper money, it suspended the program in 1450. For much of the Ming era, silver was the currency of choice, including tons of Mexican and Peruvian ingots brought to China by Spanish traders. Only in the last two, desperate years of Ming rule did the government print paper money, as it attempted to fend off the rebel Li Zicheng and his army. China did not print paper money again until the 1890s when the Qing Dynasty began producing yuan .

Provide detailed information about your topic to enhance your readers’ understanding. In your outline, write down the main ideas for each body paragraph and any outstanding questions or points you’re not yet sure about.

• Be sure to define any words your readers might not understand. For example, words like “globalization” have many different meanings depending on context, and it’s important to state which ones you’ll be using as part of your introductory paragraph.

• Try to relate the subject of the essay (say, Plato’s Symposium ) to a tangentially related issue you happen to know something about (say, the growing trend of free-wheeling hookups in frat parties). Slowly bring the paragraph around to your actual subject and make a few generalizations about why this aspect of the book/subject is so fascinating and worthy of study (such as how different the expectations for physical intimacy were then compared to now).

• You can also reflect on your own experience of researching and writing your term paper. Discuss how your understanding of your topic evolved and any unexpected findings you came across.

• While peppering quotes throughout your text is a good way to help make your point, don’t overdo it. If you use too many quotes, you’re basically allowing other authors to make the point and write the paper for you. When you do use a quote, be sure to explain why it is relevant in your own words.
• Try to sort out your bibliography at the beginning of your writing process to avoid having a last-minute scramble. When you have all the information beforehand (like the source’s title, author, publication date, etc.), it’s easier to plug them into the correct format.

• Trade in weak “to-be” verbs for stronger “action” verbs. For example: “I was writing my term paper” becomes “I wrote my term paper.”

wisely keeping an emergency supply of cash, precious metals, and other valuables as a hedge against the unforeseen.

What’s more, many important documents are often still recorded and kept on paper, like passports, deeds and mortgages, birth certificates, titles, and more. Lots of people keep physical copies of photographs, journals, letters, memorabilia, and other irreplaceable items, all of which can be easily damaged or lost in a fire, flood, theft, or other disaster. How hot does it need to get inside my safe for paper to burn?

According to Firefighter Insider :

“The temperature at which paper will burn can vary by material, moisture, and thickness. The average temperature at which it will ignite and burn is between 424 and 475 degrees Fahrenheit (218 and 246 degrees celsius).”

Of course even relatively low levels of heat can damage paper over time.

If you’ve ever found old receipts, letters, or newspapers stored in a hot attic or garage, you know how heat can turn paper into crinkly, fragile sheets of brown patina. So it’s important to keep your safe inside your home (not in a non-temperature-controlled garage, for example) and keep it as cool and dry as possible.

What temperature and humidity is ideal for storing paper currency and documents?

For paper documents and currency, generally the lower the temperature the better. Many library caretakers and archivists recommend a stable temperature of no more than 70 degrees fahrenheit. However, keeping your safe at, say, 50 degrees inside your home is likely not possible, so just remember that temperature fluctuations and high humidity tend to do the most damage to paper valuables and documents.

Paper is hygroscopic, meaning that it readily absorbs moisture from the air. This can lead to cracking, curling, flaking, bleeding of ink, and if humidity is high enough, to mildew and mold damage.

Therefore, it’s crucial that your storage location (a safe, ideally) be humidity controlled at between 30-50% humidity, and ideally kept in a climate-controlled room between at no more than 75 degrees fahrenheit. Again, the lower the temp the better, and the lower on the range of humidity, the better.

Light exposure and insect concerns regarding storage of paper goods

Insects or bugs like silverfish love to eat musty old books (they thrive on carbohydrates, and paper/cellulose is definitely not Keto-approved), but typically they aren’t an issue inside a clean, humidity controlled safe, in a clean, temperature-controlled home with clean air circulation. This prevents the natural oils and acids present in your skin from being absorbed by the paper, causing damage over time.

There is no doubt that money facilitates and motivates all economic activities relating to consumption, production, exchange and distribution. Money enables a consumer to maxi­mize his satisfaction. Money measures the intensity of desire and the utility of commodity to a consumer.

The role and significance of money in modern economy can be summarized by the following points:

1. Significance of Money in Production:

Without money, production on the modern scale would be impossible. The present day industrial production is based on extreme division of labour or specialisation which implies that the worker cannot be paid in the commodity he produces and also the existence of the extensive market to dispose of commodity. It is money which has made possible the extreme specialisation and, therefore resulted in large-scale production.

Again, money enables every man to concentrate his attention on his own job, without bothering about all other things and thus to add more effectively to the general flow of goods and services which constitute the real income of society.

It is clear, therefore, that without money, modern specialisation is impossible and without specialisation modern capitalist economy could not have come into existence.

The manufacturers use money to purchase materials for the construction of their factories, they use it to buy the materials necessary for their equipments. They bid competitively in the markets of the world for the raw materials used in the process of manufacturing. They employ money as a means of attracting to their business the requisite labour force, officials and professionals.

2. Significance of Money in Consumption:

The consumer receives his income in the form of money, which he can convert into anything he likes. A worker in a cloth factory cannot be paid in a cloth or an employee in a shoe factory in shoes. It is impossible for workers to go about exchanging cloth or shoes for rice, wheat, vegetables and hundreds of old things they require. When payment is made in kind (and not in money) there is high possibility that the consumer gets too much of some goods and too little of others.

The consumer, therefore, does not get maximum satisfaction in the absence of money. On the other hand, when the consumer receives his income in the form of money, he can distribute it on the different goods in such a way that his total satisfaction will be highest. The use of money and the system of prices give the consumers the necessary freedom to choose and substitute between goods and services.

It is the system of money and prices which help the consumers to:

(a) Choose the type of goods they consume;

(b) The variety of goods they can choose; and

(c) The amount which they could choose.

3. Money as Medium of Exchange:

One important reason why money occupies a central position in a modern economy is the function of money as a medium of exchange, and of payments. Everything can be bought and sold, i.e., exchanged through the medium of money. Goods and services are exchanged through money. Shares and bonds (which are known as claims to wealth) are bought and sold in the form of money.

Similarly, taxes to the government are paid in money. In other words, money is used as the general medium of exchange and of payment. Without it, there can be no trade and, therefore, no production. (In modern economy, there can be no production, if what is produced cannot be sold).

4. Significance of Money to the Modern State:

The government is a large receiver as well as maker of payments. The state receives income by way of taxes, fees, fines, prices for service rendered etc. The income which the states get may be one-third or one-fourth of the total national income. It is impossible to collect taxes, fees, fines, etc. in the forms of goods.

The farmer would pay in grains the cobbler in shoes, the carpenter in chairs and tables; and so on. This would create problems of collection, storage or distribution. Similarly, the government has to make payment by way of wages, salaries, interest, etc. This would be impossible except in terms of money. Public revenues and public expenditures are so vast that they are possible only in a money economy.

Moreover, modern governments plan their incomes and expenditure in advance. This would not be possible if they collect their revenue to kind. Revenues received in goods and payments made in kind would make calculation and budgeting an impossible task.

5. All Incomes are in the Form of Money:

All incomes that are received are in the form of money. This necessarily follows from the fact that money serves as a general medium of exchange and of payments in settlement of debts. The firms which sells its goods, receives money for it; its income, therefore, consists of money.

The lecturer who sells his services to the college gets his salary in the form of money. Since all payments are made in money, every income is a money income (payment by one person becomes income for another). Thus, in a modern economy, all incomes are money incomes.

6. Significance of Money in Trade:

The basic purpose of money is to help in the exchange of goods and services (i.e., trades). In a primitive economy, there was very little trade. Naturally, the system of exchange was barter. With extension of trade, the need for money rises. Large scale production and extension of markets to sell the goods produced are impossible without the use of money.

In the last two hundred years, trade has become very extensive and to facilitate this, new types of money have been involved. The use of bank cheques and bank drafts facilitates buying and selling of goods as well as of payments.

Not only internal trade, but international trade too is possible only through money. The currency of one country may be acceptable in India but cannot buy even a match box in England or the U.S.A. However, trade between two countries is financed by means of bank drafts.

Trade, both internal and international, is very important and indispensable for modern large-scale production. Money is the medium by which trade is undertaken. If there were no money, there would be no extensive trade; if there were no trade, there would be no large-scale production and no modern capitalist economy.

7. Wealth kept Partly in Money:

Another important factor responsible for the central position of money in modern times is that money constitutes the most important form of wealth. Everyone i.e., individual, company or corporation or the government wishes to have some cash to meet current obligations and as a precautionary measure (for reserves).

The amount of cash held by people will naturally differ from individual to individual and from institution to institution. A rich man will obviously keep more cash than a poor man. But everyone keeps some cash with himself or as deposit in a bank.

Value of money means the buying capacity of money. It shows the purchasing power of money over commodities and services. It denotes the capacity of money to buy commodities and services. It refers to the volume of goods and services which a unit of money will buy at a given line and place. When, a unit of money purchases larger amount of commodities and services, its value is said to be higher and vice-versa.

Since the number of commodities and services are available for exchange with money is very large, it is very difficult to express the value of money in terms of one particular commodity. Therefore, the value of money cannot be expressed only relatively. There is an inverse relationship between the price-level and the value of money. The buying capacity of money is always dependent on the price-level.

When the price-level rises, money buys less and, therefore, we say the value of money has fallen. Similarly, when the price level falls, value of money rises. The variation in the value of money is always accompanied by opposite variation in the prices of commodities and services. In brief, value of money varies inversely with the price-level. It is reciprocal of price level.

Where, V m denotes the value of money, and P stands for price level.

2024 Update of Resource Adequacy of the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust and the Debt Relief Trusts

This paper provides an update of the adequacy of the resources of the Fund’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) and the debt relief trusts. Demand for PRGT loans continued to exceed earlier projections. Total PRGT credit outstanding reached SDR 18.3 billion at end-2023, or three times the pre-pandemic average. PRGT fundraising targets under the 2021 two-stage funding strategy to support LICs during the pandemic and beyond were met. Work is underway to implement the pledges. Ensuring PRGT long-term sustainability is a priority, and balancing a level of PRGT lending that meets the demand from eligible countries while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Trust will be taken up in the ongoing PRGT Review. The Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT) remains severely underfunded, after providing debt relief to the IMF’s poorest and most vulnerable members during 2020–22. The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative is nearly complete. Somalia reached its Completion Point under the HIPC Initiative in December 2023, while Sudan’s prospects for reaching its HIPC Completion Point remain uncertain owing to domestic developments.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s legal team says it tried serving Stormy Daniels a subpoena as she arrived for an event at a bar in Brooklyn last month, but the porn actor, who is expected to be a witness at the former president’s criminal trial , refused to take it and walked away.

A process server working for Trump’s lawyers said he approached Daniels with papers demanding information related to a documentary recently released about her life and involvement with Trump, but was forced to “leave them at her feet,” according to a court filing made public Wednesday.

“I stated she was served as I identified her and explained to her what the documents were,” process server Dominic DellaPorte wrote. “She did not acknowledge me and kept walking inside the venue, and she had no expression on her face.”

The encounter, prior to a screening of the “Stormy” film at the 3 Dollar Bill nightclub, has touched off a monthlong battle between Trump’s lawyers and Daniels’ attorney that continued this week as the presumptive Republican nominee’s criminal trial began in Manhattan.

Trump’s lawyers are asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to force Daniels to comply with the subpoena. In their filing, they included a photo they said DellaPorte took of Daniels as she strode away.

Daniels’ lawyer Clark Brewster claims they never received the paperwork. He described the requests as an “unwarranted fishing expedition” with no relevance to Trump’s criminal trial.

“The process — instituted on the eve of trial — appears calculated to cause harassment and/or intimidation of a lay witness,” Brewster wrote in an April 9 letter to Merchan. Brewster didn’t immediately reply to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The hush money case is the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to go to trial. Seven jurors have been seated so far. Jury selection is set to resume Thursday.

Daniels is expected to testify about a $130,000 payment she got in 2016 from one of Trump’s lawyers at the time, Michael Cohen, in order to stop her from speaking publicly about a sexual encounter she said she had with Trump years earlier.

Cohen was later reimbursed by Trump’s company for that payment. Trump is accused of falsifying his company’s records to hide the nature of that payment, and other work he did to bury negative stories during the 2016 campaign.

Trump pleaded not guilty last year to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He denies having a sexual encounter with Daniels. His lawyers argue the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses, and were recorded correctly.

In a separate filing made public Wednesday, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said that if Trump chooses to testify at the trial, prosecutors plan to challenge his credibility by questioning him about his recent legal setbacks. The filing was made last month under seal.

Trump was recently ordered to pay a $454 million civil penalty following a trial in which a judge ruled he had lied about his wealth on financial statements. In another trial, a jury said he was liable for $83.3 million for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of sexual assault.

Merchan said he plans to hold a hearing Friday to decide whether that will be allowed.

Under New York law, prosecutors can question witnesses about past legal matters in certain circumstances. Trump’s lawyers are opposed. Trump has said he wants to testify, but he is not required to and can always change his mind.

As for the subpoena dispute, it marks the latest attempt by Trump’s lawyers to knock loose potentially damaging information about Daniels, a key prosecution witness.

They are demanding an array of documents related to the promotion and editing of the documentary, “Stormy,” which explores Daniels’ career in the adult film industry and rise to celebrity since her alleged involvement with Trump became publicly known.

They are also requesting Daniels reveal how much, if anything, she was compensated for the film.

Trump’s lawyers contend the film’s premiere last month on NBC’s Peacock streaming service — a week before the trial was originally scheduled to start — stoked negative publicity about Trump, muddying his ability to get a fair trial.

In the filings made public Wednesday, Trump’s attorneys accuse Daniels of “plainly seeking to promote her brand and make money based on her status as a witness.”

The subpoena also demands communications between Daniels and other likely witnesses in the trial, including Cohen and Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who alleges she had an affair with Trump. It also requests any communications between Daniels and Carroll.

Earlier this month, Merchan blocked an attempt by Trump to subpoena NBC Universal for information related to the documentary. He wrote that subpoena and the demands therein “are the very definition of a fishing expedition.”

Repairing humidity-induced interfacial degradation in quasi-2d perovskite solar cells printed in ambient air.

Due to the moisture sensitivity of organic cations, the presence of adsorbed water (H2Oad) during the printing process in air tends to complicate the structure transformation and poses potential hazards to the long-term operational stability, particularly in alternating-cation interlayer layered halide perovskite (LHPs) solar cells with a sophisticated organic cation composition. Here, H2Oad as a nucleation medium skillfully expanded the humidity processing window for scalable LHPs solar cells, revealing the feasibility of the thermodynamically favored reaction pathways in promoting atomic layer deposition in direct contact with the perovskite films without damage. Besides, the interfacial aging mechanism and inhibition of ion diffusion were comprehensively investigated. Finally, target devices based on GA(MA)5Pb5I16 (n = 5) with effective areas of 0.09 cm2 and 1.01 cm2 exhibited impressive power conversion efficiencies of 21.0% and 19.7%, respectively, which was one of the highest values in the large-area 2D LHPs devices. The target device maintained 93% of its initial efficiency over 170 days (4080 h) in an air environment, while further validating the scalability of our strategy on LHPs modules with an area of 100 cm2.
