In service to these interests, NATO has been a primary vehicle of war, occupation and destabilization. The people of Yugoslavia, Afghanistan , Iraq and Libya are among the better known victims of NATO policies.

Canada’s involvement in NATO has meant an inability for Canada’s government to enact any foreign policy that deviates from the will of the United States.

It has also meant the draining of billions of dollars that should be going to social needs and environmental protection in Canada, and humanitarian aid abroad. Those billions of dollars going to Canada’s military could have been shifted to construct affordable, quality housing across Canada.

In order to get off of this dangerous path of destruction that threatens global annihilation, Canada must move to a foreign policy of peace and disarmament.

Seventy-five years has produced a shamefully long record of invasion, destruction and death for the sake of profit. Canada must say: “No to endless war and get out of NATO!”

Soldiers’ treatment disgraceful

The national news story of Canadian soldiers in Ottawa having to depend on food donations to eat was a disgrace. We get this news while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hand outs money to his Liberal friends in his “Let’s Make a Deal” pre-budget bribe tour.

I’m sure Canadians would have preferred the millions Trudeau wasted in the ArriveCan scam would have been better spent on our Canadian soldiers. What is this dysfunctional Liberal government thinking?

At a time when the Canadian Armed Forces can’t recruit enough people to meet minimum standards to defend Canada, is Justin Trudeau launching this national marketing recruitment strategy: Join the army and starve?

MPs’ pay raise April Fool’s prank

Canadians are reeling from high food, home and mortgage costs, but on April 1. the carbon tax on gas will increase to approximately 18 cents per litre, causing cost increases to many other items.

Sadly, government officials are still voting themselves pay raises, like Victoria councillors who gave themselves a 25 per cent or $13,000 pay raise. Members of Parliament will also received a pay raise on April 1 of $8,000 to $16,000, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau $30,000.

I guess they consider Canadians who are financially hurting to be April fools, eh?

If the carbon tax protesters in Saskatchewan and Alberta think that by disrupting traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway, they will magically cause Justin Trudeau to drop the tax they are sadly deluded.

Post Office inquiry latest: Alan Bates laughs at lawyer's suggestion about him

The UK Post Office Horizon Public Inquiry resumes today almost four years after it began, with public interest in the scandal having skyrocketed thanks to a TV drama. Giving evidence today was the hero of that series, Alan Bates, who led a group litigation against the Post Office in 2017.

Former sub-postmaster, lead campaigner and the man behind the Mr Bates Vs The Post Office series, Alan Bates, has been giving evidence.

Before we go, here's a reminder of the key things we learnt: 

• The inquiry heard Mr Bates was sacked by the Post Office because it considered him to be "unmanageable" - a claim he dismissed as "nonsense";
• Mr Bates described having a "positive" feeling towards the Horizon system when it was introduced, but said he quickly grew "frustrated" with its "many shortcomings";
• He added that a £6,000 variance appeared just weeks after the system was installed;
• Despite writing several letters about his concerns, Mr Bates said he "never" got a reply;
• Speaking about his termination, he said the Post Office was after him "one way or another" and bosses didn't like him "standing up to them";
• He told the inquiry he "didn't set out to spend 20 years" campaigning, but he wanted to "expose the truth";
• Turning to a 2010 letter sent to Ed Davey, who was postal minister at the time, Mr Bates said he found the correspondence "offensive" and accused the MP of ignoring "human misery";
• Mr Bates also pointed out the Post Office was insisting fears around Horizon were "unfounded" as late as 2013;
• And he dismissed a Post Office lawyer's suggestion he has a "loose relationship with the truth";
• In a slightly funny moment towards the end, Mr Bates misspoke, suggesting the Post Office should be sold to Horizon, before correcting himself to mean Amazon.

Speaking to reporters outside the inquiry, Alan Bates jokes that the Post Office CEO, who was in attendance at Aldwych House today, could've thrashed out a remediation deal.

"He (Nick Read) should've brought his chequebook," he says, laughing. 

"I'm in no special place in the queue, I'm just one of the many, and yet they have to get on with it," he adds.

One more joke to finish the day comes when he's asked what he'll do when he is finally sent the money he is owed.

"I'm gonna buy a little Post Office somewhere and put my feet up," he says. 

Alan Bates has now finished giving evidence to the public inquiry, which will reconvene tomorrow at 10am. 

The inquiry was also shown a letter from Jo Swinson in 2015, when she was the Post Office minister. 

The letter, which is addressed to Alan Bates, states there is "no evidence of system-wide problems with Horizon". 

"This conclusion has stood firm through nearly two years of investigation," Ms Swinson writes. 

It was in 2015 that the Post Office announced the mediation scheme's working group closed, and all remaining cases were being referred to independent advisors. 

Jason Beer QC, counsel to the public inquiry, concludes his questions for Alan Bates by asking him to sum up his views on the culture of the Post Office.

"They're an atrocious organisation," he says.

"They need disbanding, it needs removing, it needs building up again from the ground floor.

"And as have been quoted quite commonly, the whole of the Postal Service nowadays is a dead duck - it's beyond saving."

A comic misspeak sees Mr Bates suggest Post Office should be sold to "someone like Horizon" - meaning to reference Amazon.

It was a repeat of similar comments he made in front of the business committee, when he proposed the organisation should be sold to the online giant "for £1". 

He corrects himself for saying Horizon, adding "that's the last thing I'd say". 

"It should be sold to someone like Amazon," he says.

"It needs a real big injection of money and I think that that can only happen [if it's] coming in from [the] outside. 

"Otherwise it's just going to be it's going to be a bugbear for the government for the years to come."

For the second time this afternoon, Alan Bates laughs out loud at a remark made about him by Post Office affiliates. 

This time, an email dated 2017 references Mr Bates as having a "loose relationship with the truth". 

The email was written by Andrew Parson, a partner at law firm Bond Dickinson LLP, which advised Post Office at the time.

To which Mr Bates responded with a laugh...

"Andy Parsons was one those who used to appear at the working group meetings - one of the many lawyers the Post Office used to send to them," he says when asked why Mr Parsons would say that. 

"I mean, I don't know why he's come up with that. I know I sometimes I might embellish, but I don't lie."

The inquiry is now looking at a section of Alan Bates's witness statement…

In one paragraph, he says he believed the mediation scheme failed as it was "part of a cover-up by the Post Office". 

He says there was "definitely an element of not wanting to accept fault" by the Post Office, and the company likely "discovered things that they did not like and did not want to come out". 

"I believe the Post Office had no intention whatsoever of getting to a mutually acceptable and fair decision," he adds. 

"If anything, it seemed as if the Post Office had been using the scheme as a fishing expedition to see what evidence sub-postmasters actually had about Horizon." 

During the break earlier, we caught a word from Post Office chief executive Nick Read, who has sat in the inquiry throughout the day. 

While the wrongful convictions that came about due to the Horizon issues did not happen on his watch, he is in charge of the compensation scheme which is still a point of contention for many affected. 

He said he is still focused on "getting to the truth" of the scandal and bringing "transparency to the process". 

Asked what he thought of the evidence given by Alan Bates today, he said it was "very, very compelling" and "very sobering". 

"We want to make sure the culture of today's Post Office learns the lessons from the past," he added. 

Alan Bates is discussing his frustrations with the remediation scheme set up to help postal workers. 

He said at the time (2014) that "the further the scheme progresses, the more entrenched and defensive Post Office becomes". 

Asked today to explain why he felt like that, he highlights disclosure as the key issue.

"Once these cases were being investigated, in theory, by Post Office, they were asking for more and more time," he says. 

There was meant to be a four to six-week period for investigations, but the Post Office consistently asked for extension after extension, he says. 

Sub-postmasters were forced to sit tight while the mediation scheme spent "six months or seven months" waiting to investigate claims, he says. 

"It just dragged on and on and on."

After a short break, the inquiry is back and Alan Bates is still giving evidence.

As PEOPLE Magazine turns 50, editor in chief Wendy Naugle reflects on the brand's legacy and the milestones to come

As PEOPLE’s anniversary loomed, it seemed like a daunting task to decide how to celebrate. First off, who should grace our cover? When our team sat down to brainstorm, we couldn’t decide on just one person. This issue, we agreed, should be a celebration of the people who have helped shape the culture and will do so for years to come. Our cover stars — with a combined 14 Primetime Emmys, 16 Golden Globes, five Oscars, four Tonys and 14 Grammys — have absolutely done that. Our birthday crew also includes three Sexiest Men Alive, two EGOTs, multiple humanitarian-award winners, a world champion and a GOAT.

It’s been said that a copy of PEOPLE is the most requested item to put in time capsules, and I believe it. Every day at PEOPLE, we try to chronicle what’s happening — the stories that touch our hearts, delight us, surprise us. Our goal is to take our readers up close to our subjects so that we can all understand what motivates them and to find the commonality of the human experience, the ups and downs, the tragedies and the triumphs. As Drew Barrymore told us, when someone shares their story, we feel less alone. 

Preparing for our 50th, I’ve found so many of those stories in our archives. Tina Turner, in 1981, revealed in our pages how she had survived an abusive marriage , fleeing husband Ike with only 36 cents to her name. In 1998 Michael J. Fox disclosed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in a PEOPLE cover story, and he’s since changed the course of research for the disease. In 2010 Sandra Bullock revealed her emotions after adopting son Louis : “The first time I met Louis it was like the whole outside world just got quiet. He was so small, so still. All the trivial things that I had allowed to take up so much of my time just didn’t have room in life anymore.” In these difficult times, I’m always heartened that something as simple as sharing a story can connect us.

Our entire team worked tirelessly on this issue: Julie Jordan, Lizz Leonard, Melody Chiu and Andrea Mandell wrangled our cover stars; David Walters oversaw the whole package; Jessica Iavazzi helmed the stunning videos you’ll see on Instagram and YouTube; Phoebe Weekes and Dean Markadakis led design; and our fearless director of photography, Ilana Schweber, coordinated every photo shoot and did countless hours of archival research. Someday there will be another editor sitting in this chair, planning a 75th or 100th anniversary of PEOPLE that will live on the page or a screen or in 3D or on some new spatial plane yet to be invented. What tips would I give them? Matthew McConaughey’s advice to his younger self sums it up: “I’d let him figure it out. . . . Take feeder roads off the highway. Get confused, get frustrated, feel lost and overcome it.” And I’d add: Make it fun. Make it fabulous.

U.S. Postal Service Recommends New Prices for July 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the U. S. Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

The proposed adjustments, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would raise mailing services product prices approximately 7.8 percent. If favorably reviewed by the commission, the price changes would include:

The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters increases from 24 cents to 28 cents. The Postal Service is also seeking price adjustments for Special Services products, including Certified Mail and money order fees. Notably, there will be no price increase for Post Office Box rental fees, and the Postal Service will apply a price reduction of 10 percent for postal insurance when mailing an item.

As changes in the mailing and shipping marketplace continue, these price adjustments are needed to achieve the financial stability sought by the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan. USPS prices remain among the most affordable in the world.

The commission will review the changes before they are scheduled to take effect. 'I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal': McDonald's franchisee responds to California's new fast-food worker wages

A McDonald's franchisee said he raised menu prices in response to California's new $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers but that there's a limit to how much customers would pay.

"We have looked at price, although I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal," Scott Rodrick, the owner of 18 McDonald's restaurants in Northern California, told CNN . "My customers' appetite to absorb menu-board prices is not unlimited."

The cost of a Happy Meal varies at locations around the US. On Uber Eats for a McDonald's in Sacramento, California, Happy Meals range from $7 for a hamburger Happy Meal to $8.60 for the six-piece Chicken McNuggets option.

Franchisees are largely able to set their own prices. Rodrick said he already raised prices at his restaurants by 5% to 7% in the past three months to prepare for the new legislation.

A McDonald's franchisee in Los Angeles County told KTLA 5 News recently that if she raised her prices enough to offset the wage increase, her food would be unaffordable.

California set its minimum wage for fast-food workers at $20 an hour on Monday, which is 25% more than the state's general minimum wage. The legislation, AB 1228, affects limited-service chains with at least 60 locations nationwide.

The state's newly created Fast Food Council can raise the minimum wage by up to 3.5% yearly, depending on inflation.

Restaurant owners have been evaluating various measures to offset the bigger paychecks. Many, like Rodrick, said they planned to make diners pay for at least some of the wage increase.

Some restaurants are slashing labor, too, by reducing how many hours their staff work or even laying some off . But Rodrick told CNN that rather than cutting back on labor, he would expand his delivery operations and postpone major investments, like updating dining rooms and buying new grills.

"I've got to look at every option for business survivability," Rodrick told Fox News. "I've got to be aggressive in seeking labor-efficient growth. I'm going to have to explore more digital and delivery avenues. I'm going to obviously have to make, like any smaller-business owner, harder choices around big capital expenditures."

In his interview with Fox News, Rodrick emphasized the nature of franchisees as small-business owners. "Franchisees are not large, global corporations," he said.

Fast-food workers and their unions have been pushing for higher wages in the industry for years.

"We are in this fight because workers are worth more and our families deserve better than poverty wages," Angelica Hernandez, a cook trainer at McDonald's who sits on the Fast Food Council, said at a press conference on Monday. Her comments were translated from Spanish.

"Even though we are the engine of a billion-dollar industry, too many of us struggle to keep up with rent our bills and the rising cost of living," Hernandez said.
