Gold movie review: Alphonse Puthren reflects on greed in this Prithviraj starrer

Gold review: this could be the beginning of alphonse puthren gravitating towards making films that reflect on social issues and the ongoing spiritual bankruptcy of society..

Filmmaker Alphonse Puthren’s last directorial outing, Premam, caused an earthquake of sorts in the film industry. Starring Nivin Pauly in the lead, the film followed a man’s journey to find love through various stages of life. It takes a long time for the hero to find the woman of his dreams, but when he finally does, the moment is so perfect. It gets etched in your memory. If you are the same age as George David, you may relate to the scene. If you are younger than him, it may give you hope that life will work itself out.

Alphonse’s Gold also has a generous amount of optimism packed into it, though it is not expansive like Premam. Joshi S Kunjan (Prithviraj Sukumaran) wakes up to find a truck hastily parked outisde his house, blocking its front gate. Prodded by his mother (played by Prithviraj’s mother Mallika Sukumaran) Joshi goes to investigate the strange pickup truck. He checks the cargo, which is about 200 boxes of portable speakers. As a law-abiding citizen, he goes straight to the cops to report the suspicious vehicle. But, it so happens that the situation at the police station mirrors his own. A lorry carrying massive timber logs has broken down blocking the entrance to the station. The whole station is under stress, so Joshi’s complaint takes a backseat.

While Joshi is frustrated that he’s unable to bring his new car inside the compound of house, courtesy of the abandoned pickup, in the next few scenes he will realise that he’s sitting on a gold mine.

The film slowly develops into some version of a heist movie replete with absurd and thought-provoking humour. Yes, you heard it right, thought-provoking. Well, it seems Gold could be the beginning of Alphonse gravitating towards making films that reflect on social issues and the ongoing spiritual bankruptcy of society.

The ills of gluttony are the main theme of Gold. Most characters in the film are chronic consumers. They consume more than they create. Few people have so much money that they don’t know what to do with it. Many people have nothing and have no idea where to find some. We are devolving into a society of takers and the list of givers is growing thin. ‘Idea’ Shaji (Lalu Alex) is the personification of excess. It seems he can never run out of things to eat or drink. He’s always on the prowl to take things from others. And when he gets what he wants, he doesn’t know what he wants to do with it. Yet, he wants everything he lays his eyes on. On the other hand, we meet a broken man who is overjoyed when he makes a little bit of money, which allows him to buy his starving children a tasty breakfast from a local eatery.

Lalu Alex and Ajmal Ameer do a fantastic job as men of excess. They bring out the meaninglessness of buying one expensive thing after another. In their hands, all the expensive things, including money and iPhones, lose value. Baburaj delivers a memorable performance, which is subtle but effective. He’s in an occupation where he’s presented with many temptations to take things that don’t belong to him. But, he never allows himself to indulge. He cuts a sane presence in a self-consuming world. Nayanthara ’s Sumangali Unnikrishnan is also the byproduct of over-indulgent lifestyle but she’s not beyond saving. That said, the film has failed to value her talent. She is just an expensive presence in the cast with nothing much to do.

How do you enjoy an Alphonse Puthren film? By simply being in the moment. If you expect the narrative to take you someplace else, you might be left disappointed. Instead, if you choose to enjoy what the film is offering you at any given moment, you will find entertainment. Like life, in Alphonse’s films, it’s not the destination but the journey that matters.

‘ലോകസിനിമാചരിത്രത്തിൽ പുതുമകളൊന്നുമില്ലാത്ത മൂന്നാമത്തെ ചിത്ര’മെന്നാണ് ‘ഗോൾഡ്’ എന്ന സിനിമയ്ക്ക് സംവിധായകൻ അൽഫോൻസ് പുത്രൻ നൽകുന്ന വിശേഷണം. പുതുമകൾ ഇല്ലെന്ന അൽഫോൻസിന്റെ വാദം തത്വത്തിൽ അംഗീകരിക്കാമെങ്കിലും ബോറടിപ്പിക്കാത്ത സിനിമയാണ് ‘ഗോൾഡ്’ എന്നതിൽ തർക്കമില്ല. അൽഫോൻസ് എന്ന സംവിധായകൻ മുൻപൊരുക്കിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ അതേ മൂശയിൽത്തന്നെയാണ് ‘ഗോൾഡും’ വാർത്തെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. കഥയും പശ്ചാത്തലവും വേറെയാണെങ്കിലും കഥ പറച്ചിൽ രീതി പഴയതു തന്നെ. 

പെരിയാർ പുഴയ്ക്ക് അരികിലായാണ് ജോഷിയുടെ വീട്. ടൗണിൽ മൊബൈൽ ഷോപ്പ് നടത്തുകയാണ് കക്ഷി. കൊറോണ സമയമൊക്കെ ആയതുകൊണ്ട് ജോഷി ഇപ്പോൾ വീട്ടിൽത്തന്നെയാണ്. പുതിയ കാറൊക്കെ ബുക്ക് ചെയ്ത് കല്യാണത്തിനു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള തയാറെടുപ്പ് കൂടി ഇതിനിടയ്ക്ക് നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിനിടെയാണ് അത് സംഭവിക്കുന്നത്. ജോഷിയുടെ വീടിനു മുന്നിൽ ആരോ ഒരു പിക്കപ്പ് ലോറി പാർക്ക് ചെയ്ത് പോയിരിക്കുന്നു. വണ്ടിയിൽ താക്കോലുമില്ല, നിറയെ ലോഡും. വണ്ടി മാറ്റാൻ ജോഷി പൊലീസിന്റെ സഹായം തേടുന്നു. തുടർന്ന് ആ ലോറിയും അതിലെ ലോഡും ജോഷിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന അപ്രതീക്ഷിത സംഭവങ്ങളാണ് ‘ഗോൾഡ്’ പറയുന്നത്.

വലിയ ബഹളങ്ങളില്ലാതെ, തലച്ചോറിന് പൂർണവിശ്രമം നൽകി ഇരുന്ന് കാണാവുന്ന എന്റർടെയ്നറാണ് ‘ഗോൾഡ്’. പടം എങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ എടുത്തുവച്ചാലും എഡിറ്റിങ് ടേബിളിലാണ് അൽഫോൻസിന്റെ മാജിക്. ‘നേര’ത്തിലും ‘പ്രേമ’ത്തിലുമൊക്കെ ആ മികവു കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞവരാണ് നമ്മൾ. അതേ എഡിറ്റിങ് പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ‘ഗോൾഡി’ലുമുണ്ട്. ഓരോ സീനിലും പുതിയ പുതിയ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. കഥയിൽ ലോജിക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കരുത്. പൂമ്പാറ്റ, ഉറുമ്പ്, പുൽച്ചാടി, പിന്നെ പ്രകൃതി ഇവയൊക്കെ പാകത്തിനു സ്ക്രീൻ ടൈമിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എഡിറ്റിങ്ങിൽ ആവോളം പുതുമകൾ കൊണ്ടു വന്ന അൽഫോൻസിന്റെ തിരക്കഥയിൽ പുതിയ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളൊന്നും തന്നെയില്ല.

അറുപതോളം കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ വന്നുപോകുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും സിനിമയില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നത് പൃഥ്വിരാജ് തന്നെയാണ്. കോമഡി രംഗങ്ങളിലും മറ്റും പൃഥ്വി മികവു പുലർത്തി. സത്യസന്ധനായ പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായി എത്തുന്ന ബാബുരാജ്, ഐഡിയ ഷാജിയായെത്തുന്ന ലാലു അലക്സ്, ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണനായെത്തുന്ന ഷമ്മി തിലകൻ എന്നിവർക്കാണ് കൂടുതല്‍ സ്ക്രീൻ സ്പെയ്സ്. ലാലു അലക്സ്–ഷമ്മി തിലകൻ കോംബോ കോമഡി തിയറ്ററുകളിൽ ചിരിപൊട്ടിക്കും. ഓൺസ്ക്രീനിലും അമ്മയും മകനുമായെത്തിയ മല്ലിക സുകുമാരൻ–പൃഥ്വി കോംബോയും രസകരമായി. സുമംഗലി ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണനെന്ന കഥാപാത്രമാകുന്ന നയൻതാരയ്ക്ക് ചിത്രത്തിൽ കാര്യമായി ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാനില്ല. 

വിനയ് ഫോർട്ട് ആണ് കയ്യടി നേടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു താരം. സൈജു കുറുപ്പ്, ഷറഫുദ്ദീൻ, അജ്മൽ അമീർ, ശബരീഷ് വർമ, അബു സലിം, ചെമ്പൻ വിനോദ്, ദീപ്തി സതി, ജഗദീഷ്, സുരേഷ് കൃഷ്ണ, ശാന്തി കൃഷ്ണ, അൽത്താഫ്, പ്രേംകുമാർ, കൃഷ്ണശങ്കര്‍, ശരത് സക്സേന, സുധീഷ്, ഇടവേള ബാബു, ഷെബിൻ ബെൻസൺ, ജാഫർ ഇടുക്കി, തെസ്നി ഖാൻ, ജസ്റ്റിൻ, സാബുമോൻ, ജോളി മൂത്തേടൻ തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി താരങ്ങൾ ‘ഗോൾഡി’ലുണ്ട്. ഇവരിൽ പലരും ഒരു ഷോട്ടിൽ മാത്രം വന്നുപോകുന്നവരാണ്. ഗാനരംഗങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം അതിഥികളായി സൗബിൻ ഷാഹിർ, ഗണപതി, സിജു വിൽസൺ എന്നിവരും എത്തി. സംവിധാനത്തിനും എ‍ഡിറ്റിങ്ങിനും പുറമെ സിനിമയുടെ സ്റ്റണ്ടും വിഷ്വൽ ഇഫക്റ്റ്സും അനിമേഷനും കളര്‍ ഗ്രേഡിങ്ങും അൽഫോൻസ് തന്നെയാണ് നി‍ർവഹിക്കുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഓരോ ഷോട്ടിലും പുത്രന്റെ കയ്യൊപ്പ് പതിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. രാജേഷ് മുരുകേശന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതം ചിത്രത്തോടു പൂർണമായും നീതിപുലർത്തി. 

‘നേരം’, ‘പ്രേമം’ എന്നീ രണ്ടു സിനിമകൾ തരുന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷാഭാരം ‘ഗോൾഡ്’ കാണാനെത്തുന്ന പ്രേക്ഷകർ മാറ്റി വയ്ക്കുന്നതാകും ഉചിതം. കാരണം ഒാരോ സിനിമയും ഒാരോ തരമാണ്, ഒാരോ രീതിയാണ്. പുതുമകൾ ഒന്നുമില്ലെന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് ‘നേര’വും ‘പ്രേമ’വും അവതരിപ്പിച്ച അൽഫോൻസ് പക്ഷേ അതിലൊക്കെ നിരവധി പുതുമകൾ ഒളിപ്പിച്ചു വച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ‘ഗോൾഡി’ൽ അത്രയ്ക്ക് വലിയ പുതുമകൾ ആരും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല. അതിനർഥം ഇതൊരു മോശം സിനിമയാണെന്നല്ല, മറിച്ച് മുൻ സിനിമകളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷാഭാരം തലയിലേറ്റി പോയി കാണേണ്ട ചിത്രമല്ലെന്നതു തന്നെ.

GOLD MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

The theatre was filled with hoots and cheers on a Thursday morning for a film that had no trailer, marketing gimmicks, or promotions. That is the lure of Alphonse Putheran and his unique filmmaking. After giving us hits like Neram and Premam, he took a seven-year-long break and returned with Gold, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nayanthara, Mallika Sukumaran, Shammy Thilakan, Lalu Alex, Ajmal Ameer, and many more.

Gold follows Joshi, owner of a mobile store in the Sumangali Shopping Complex, who wakes up one fine morning to find a deserted Bolero parked in front of the gate, blocking entrance. With his brand new GT Polo set to arrive later that day, he heads to the police station to have the pickup truck towed. What follows is a series of events that unfold the mysteries of Bolero and its contents.

With little to no marketing but a 7-year-long wait to see a Putheran directorial, Gold instilled much expectations in fans. The movie manages to meet some of these expectations but not all. With some stylish editing, catchy BGM, and certain clap-worthy moments, the Prithviraj starrer is entertaining. However, when compared to Putheran’s previous ventures, Gold falls short on being a through-and-through entertainer.

What kept the fans going despite a simple plot was the star-studded nature of the movie. Each scene would bring in a well-known face, resulting in hooting and cheering. Credit must be given to Putheran for making these entries seamless and sensible for the most part. However, with so many actors taking screen time, individual performances don't get enough time to make an impression.

The BGM and music of the film is its highlight along with its heady editing. Prithviraj Sukumaran's acting is yet another endearing aspect of Gold, for he charmingly entertains you throughout the runtime. Supporting cast like Lalu Alex and Chemban Vinod add to the fun elements of the movie.

Where Gold falls short is its lack of significant screen time for its female lead, Nayanthara, along with a few other characters. However, with all its faults (as admitted by Putheran himself in a tweet), the film remains enjoyable and a decent watch for the weekend.

Gold movie review: Alphonse Puthren’s brilliance is on full display in this fun but overlong Prithviraj-starrer

Story: Joshy, a mobile shop owner, finds a pick-up truck carrying a load of portable speakers parked right in front of his house, on the very same day his new car is about to be delivered. He approaches the cops for help, but they are facing a similar predicament. Accidentally, Joshy discovers what’s inside the small boxes aren’t speakers, and decides to make the most of the situation. Parallely, a tycoon, the father of his daughter’s fiancé and a set of goons are also after what’s inside the truck.

Review: Be it Neram or Premam, Alphonse Puthren’s films have been replete with magical moments, which evoke humour as well as move the audience in the most unexpected of ways. That’s also why the wait for his third directorial, which has lasted over seven years, was much-anticipated. That ended with Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Gold. But does it live up to the expectations? It depends on which of his previous films you connected the most with. If it’s Neram, Gold is sure to entertain you, but if it’s Premam, you would find that his latest is a bit hollow.

The film essentially revolves around its protagonist Joshy finding a pick-up truck in front of his house and how he initially tries to move the vehicle from its location, and then later decides to swap the contents of the truck. Amid all this, Alphonse, who also written and edited the movie, weaves several subplots – about what’s happening in the neighbouring police station, how the truck got to Joshy’s house, an awkward alliance between a tycoon’s daughter and an avaricious plotter’s son, and a bunch of goons trying to retrieve what’s inside the vehicle.

The highlight of Gold, right from its outset, is its making; Alphonse has carefully conceived and crafted each of the scenes of the film that blends with Rajesh Murugesan’s thumping music. In fact, some sequences, which feel so inane, beat with so much life and are almost pulsating. For instance, the scene where the cops turn up at Joshy’s house right after he discovers what’s inside the speaker box and scurries to cover his tracks to not let go of a golden opportunity, almost serves as an example of how brilliant editing, acting and music can turn a scene replete with humour into a thrilling sequence. Alphonse does it more than once in the film, and aces it every time.

Though the movie has a wafer-thin plot, it’s how Gold is conceived that makes it stand out. But then there’s only so much that presentation of a film can cover, because once the sheen wears off, you need to connect with the story, especially when it has a runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes. As soon as the crux of the plot is revealed – thanks to another brilliant sequence involving the protagonist operating a gold furnace inside his bedroom with her sunglasses on, the film does veer off and tries to take on too many subplots with mixed results.

While the scenes with Shammi Thilakan and Lalu Alex have a few punchlines that would make you laugh hard, they become tiring after a point. It’s almost as if the second half is more from a Priyadarshan comedy caper than one by Alphonse himself. Even the presence of several actors including Roshan Mathew, Sharafudheen, Siju Wilson, Vinay Forrt and Deepti Sati, doesn’t do the film much good. But there’s one cameo that was truly a delight because of the combination between Vinay and Krishna Sankar in a mobile shop.

Prithviraj is good as Joshy, especially in sequences where he is on pins and needles – evoking laughter at ease. But the film also caters to his star image, through his action scenes as well as the ending. Nayanthara, in an extended cameo, has nothing much to do in the movie. Ajmal Amir, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna, Mallika Sukumaran, Saiju Kurup and Jagadeesh are the others who get decent screen time, with Baburaj standing out from the rest.

The movie’s cinematography by Anend C Chandran and Viswajith Odukkathil once again make the audience a fly on the wall, an experience that Alphonse has mastered in his previous movie. But is it as exciting? Not quite.

Verdict : Alphonse Puthren’s Gold has its moments, thanks to Prithviraj’s acting, Rajesh Murugesan’s music and the filmmaker’s hold on his craft. But a tighter screenplay would have made it so much more fun.

Gold Movie Review (2022)

Alphonse puthren's 'gold' (malayalam) has a lot of big ideas but they don't come together as a satisfying whole.

Gold marks Alphonse Puthren's return to the screen after seven years, and to talk about the flavour – or rather the vibe – of the film, let's look at the stretch where a man needs a gold furnace. The easiest thing may be to have the man Google it up, but this is how Alphonse does it. The man calls a jewellery store. No luck. He calls another jewellery store. Again, no luck. Then he calls someone who is about to hang himself. Bingo. He gets it. This entire series of scenes is not about "logic", but about a certain approach the screenplay takes. It rambles with scenes you think can be cut out, but without those scenes the punch with the suicidal man would not work.

The man looking for the furnace is Joshy, and he's played by Prithviraj in a somewhat one-note manner – but that is also because the character is one-note. Like many in the film, he has no shades. Gold takes off when Joshy discovers a truck full of, well, gold, and there's a parallel track where the phone store he owns in a mall is about to slip away from his hands because the owner of the mall has asked him to vacate the premises. Now, this is a classic situation about a desperate man and the easiest route the screenplay could have taken is to first establish the desperation, the need for money, and then have Joshy come across the gold, which could solve all his problems. But Alphonse – thankfully – is not your typical filmmaker (or writer), and he does not link these two pieces of information in a "dramatic" way: that is, in the way a typical cause-and-effect drama would. He keeps them separate. Instead of using the "gold situation" to make us pity Joshy and root for him, he uses it to build a series of obstacles for the man.

Money is the invisible theme of the film, right from the title. It's there in the form of dowry. It's there in the form of an impoverished family that has not eaten for days. It's there in the form of a cop who keeps stealing things that are confiscated at a police station. It's there in the form of a brand-new Volkswagen car. It's probably also there – off-screen – in the number of shooting days, in the time taken to release the film. Like Premam , Gold is filled with a lot of shots and scenes where nothing seems to happen. But in Premam , these "nothing shots" added a fantastic aftertaste to the main narrative. You might have felt that this scene or that one could have been cut out, and maybe we would not have missed them – but because they are there on screen, the film becomes bigger. It becomes more than just the "story".

That does not happen in Gold . The laughs do not land. The oddness of the Saiju Kurup character, the running gag of jumping over a compound wall of a police station, the scene with Vinay Fortt and an army guy, the scenes where Joshy smokes secretly so his mother (played by Mallika Sukumaran) will not find out, or the scene where this mother keeps offering food and drink to people – none of this comes together as a satisfying whole. The film never takes root in the head, and the effort to put together the links is exhausting. Nayanthara is the nominal heroine. Her entire character could be  summed up in three words: "she eats popcorn". I'm exaggerating a little, but that's not too far from the truth. I did laugh at places (like a bit about an "exterior designer"), but the film is too diffuse to put a frame around. I loved the idea of having one-off characters come and go, but they should have been memorable cameos that stick in the mind – and they aren't. 

Among the pluses is Rajesh Murugesan's super-fun soundtrack. The truck containing the gold is a Bolero, which is also the name of a form of Western Classical Music – and at one point, we do hear a famous piece of Western Classical Music. (It's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," if I recall correctly.) But the quirky music hints at a movie that should have been much quirkier. Alphonse likes to show grasshoppers and ants and birds and squirrels, but they do not have the impact of the butterfly in Premam . I am not asking for a super-tight plot, but even loose storytelling has to add up in some way. Gold is by no means a lazy failure. But it is one of those films where the concept lies far above the execution, and the nobility in the last stretch comes out of nowhere and kills the amoral mood we have been in that far. By the end, there's no awe – just Au.

Gold Movie Review: Prithviraj-starrer is an exhausting, 165-min-long Instagram reel

Time behaves strangely in Gold . Alphonse Puthren employs a variety of editing techniques to manipulate reality. (No, this is not a sci-fi film.) We get freeze frames, colour shifts, jump cuts, ripples, waves, reverse-forward playback, audio enhancements, dialogues merging into the soundtrack, split screens, and so on... Puthren plays with his movie as a DJ would with a record. A few of these choices work -- they contribute neat comical touches -- but most of them feel self-indulgent and had me wondering whether they were really essential. They don't enhance the storytelling. They are all mind-numbingly jarring, and if it was about catering to viewers with low attention spans, I'm not sure they work. Even Thallumaala -- a fantastic example of inventive editing and staging -- had areas that tested my patience due to this very reason. Gold is a simple case of a simple plot stretched beyond a necessary length. Unfortunately, it is neither Ayyappanum Koshiyum nor Thallumaala .

When Premam came out seven years back, I was one of the few who didn't find it remarkable. I don't dislike it entirely, though, because it wasn't a total waste of time. I have some favourite moments from it, but here's the thing: I've never felt like revisiting it after that first watch in the theatre. But despite me not being a fan of it, I was keen about watching Gold owing to this 'image' Puthren has developed over the years. That might seem a strange reason to watch someone's film, but sometimes, your expectations get met. (The recent Mukundan Unni Associates is a great example -- a classic case of walking the talk -- from a newbie that too.) 

Is it possible to be fascinated with a filmmaker without being a fan of his work? I think so. Somewhere at the back of my mind, I hoped to see Puthren make a film with better ideas than the ones in Premam . Gold delivers on that front, but only to a small extent. The strange thing is, Premam didn't quite boast of a novel idea, but more of it worked for me than Gold because it was relatively less self-indulgent. Watching Premam was like having a meal with not all the dishes to your satisfaction, but at least it wasn't as grossly disappointing as Gold .

In Gold , there is a scene where two women go into a mobile phone shop and ask for a smartphone that would be ideal for making Instagram reels. I found this line amusing because Gold feels like watching a glorified Instagram reel. There is a brief stretch where the film goes into a black-and-white mode, and the explanation we get is that this scene involves "black money". What?! In another example, the subtitles tell us, "it's the sky above a police station; this is the land below it".

In other instances, we get a word or two from a dialogue showing up on the screen in bold colours, aside from the characters' names displayed in the same way. In one 'counting' scene, numbers appear above each of the boxes that comprise the cargo of a Mahindra Bolero that, for some mysterious reason, is parked in front of Prithviraj's house one fine morning -- the opening that sets off the chain of events in Gold .

There are also markers to inform us when and where some flashbacks are happening. Since all these are interlinked, Gold qualifies as a 'hyperlink' movie. But its events are not interesting enough to make it a Traffic (both the Steven Soderbergh film and the unrelated Malayalam film of the same name) or a Syriana .

We get obvious analogies -- praying mantis, ants -- the significance of which is readily apparent when considering the parallel activity involving the human characters. But these, too, get exhausting after a point. I presume they are there to mask how inadequate this film is. I also found the film largely unfunny, save for the portions featuring Chemban Vinod Chose, Roshan Mathew, and a hilarious verbal warfare between Lalu Alex and Shammi Thilakan.

The film also wastes more time by focusing, in two disparate places, on a band singing an unremarkable song and a dance group. Speaking of, don't get me started on the soundtrack. Unable to sit through them, I wished my mind possessed jump-cutting powers too.

Also, what was the purpose of casting Nayanthara in such an insignificant role? Why are Malayalam filmmakers giving her such weakly written characters -- and why is she accepting them? (There was Love Action Drama and Nizhal before this.)

But I'm still trying to understand why some of Lalu Alex's gestures and words cause the image or audio to have a sudden seizure. He is not the only actor to get this treatment. Even a mundane walk or action of Prithviraj is slowed down or enhanced in a way that makes it look like it was all done by someone who just started learning editing on Irfanview or Filmora or something. I mean, this is the same frustrating quality that we find in most amateur short films. Gold is a perfect testament to the fact that knowing editing doesn't necessarily make you a good filmmaker.

That said, I must give props to the team for not giving away the plot or character details in the teaser and promos. It is why I have opted to keep my review free of those details because, in this age where people spoil everything on social media, it's nice to see at least somebody going against the grain, even though the output didn't meet my expectations.

Alphonse Puthren – the name is enough to evoke a smile on everyone’s faces, thanks to his films, Neram and the much-loved Premam. Seven years later, the director is back with his third outing, Gold, which managed to create curiosity with almost zero promotions. So, did Alphonse Puthren strike gold with his Gold?

The film begins with Joshi (Prithviraj Sukumaran), the owner of a mobile shop. His mother (Mallika Sukumaran) wakes him up to say that someone has parked a lorry full of speakers at their gate. Despite complaining to the police, the lorry stays there for a few days. Much to his surprise, he finds out that they are not just speakers, but gold bars.

Meanwhile, Unnikrishnan has fixed a wedding for his daughter Sumangali (Nayanthara) with a wannabe rich family. What does Unnikrishnan have to do with the gold bars? Who parked the vehicle? Will Joshi take advantage? Gold has answers to all these questions.

With just two films to his credit, Alphonse Puthren has developed a cult following for himself. Naturally, the expectations for Gold spiked because it’s his comeback film. However, Gold is definitely not the comeback film that fans expected out of Alphonse. The film has a wafer-thin storyline that remains stagnant for the most part. In fact, Gold hardly had any substance that could have been conveyed via a short film.

Sitting through two-and-a-half hours of Gold, you can’t help but think of your science lessons. Can time stand still? Why do two hours feel like five hours? Apart from the story about the gold bars, you also get answers to these scientific questions.

That said, Gold also had interesting ideas to explore. However, Alphonse penned an incohesive screenplay that hardly kept us intrigued. For example, you are curious to know how Prithviraj’s Joshi will outshine the cops. But, imagine if the entire sequence goes on for half an hour. Alphonse, we get the point. It doesn’t have to be a half-an-hour sequence.

Prithviraj Sukumaran is the soul (whatever is left of that film) of Gold. As Joshi, he brought out the vulnerabilities of the character. But, he can only do so much to salvage this mess. Nayanthara almost plays a cameo role in the film. In the less screen time that she has, she looks beautiful.

Cinematographers Anend C Chandran and Viswajith Odukkathil’s work was impeccable, especially the lighting. Gold also had some solid music, thanks to Rajesh Murugesan.

Alphonse Puthren’s Gold could have been a decent heist comedy thriller had he paid attention to the detailing in the screenplay.

I liked Prithviraj in the comedy roll.  But I felt Nayanthara had very few roles.  It’s a good movie to watch with family and friends and have a good laugh.

This movie is an absolute waste of time, talent &amp; every bit of resource that was utilized into making this nonsensical work!!<br/>Every actor part of this movie has undone all the good work they've done in other movies by agreeing to be part of something as horrible as this.<br/>With so many talented actors, it is sad to see them being part of a mockery called movie. Gold review: This Alphonse Puthren thriller loses its track midway

Prithviraj Sukumaran and music by Rajesh Murugesan keep the audience engaged; most actors, including Nayanthara, do extended cameos.

Prithviraj saves the day and the movie!

Few filmmakers take extended breaks between films. The gaps between their movies are sometimes so long that if it weren’t for them, audiences would forget their names.

I am talking about directors like Thiagarajan Kumararaja and Alphonse Puthren. They are like Neelakurinji flowers .

Alphonse is back with Gold , seven years after the release of Premam .

Gold has been generating a great deal of anticipation since it was announced. Let me quickly give a glimpse into this Prithviraj and Nayanthara starrer.

An abandoned pickup truck carrying a shipment of mini speakers is found at the front entrance of the house of Joshi (Prithviraj). He cannot get his new car into the compound because the truck cannot be moved.

Joshi informs the cops, who instead get busy dealing with a similar problem. Joshi soon discovers that the truck has more than just speakers.

Rajesh’s music and  Prithviraj  save the day

There is no single genre that can adequately define Gold .

Written, edited, and directed by Alphonse Puthren, Gold — with its huge star cast — works as a thriller for most of the duration, but sometimes also as a comedy.

Gorgeous lighting, vibrant colours, and clever editing — not always, though — add to the film’s style.

Prithviraj Sukumaran as Joshi and music director Rajesh Murugesan save the day and the movie, too.

Prithviraj keeps the audience interested with his screen presence, and the film drags when he is off-screen.

Apart from Shammi Thilakan, Baburaj, Lalu Alex, and Chemban Vinod Jose, nobody leaves an impression.

Nayanthara, Ajmal Ameer, Mallika Sukumaran, Shanthi Krishna, and a dozen more actors appear in extended cameos.

None of them adds anything to the story or serves as comic relief. It’s just a matter of coming and going.

A well-set-up mystery that lacks freshness

We can see a few classy Alphonse Puthren touches like the crazy split-screen shots at the police station and the slow-motion-filled scene where Joshi keeps back the mini speaker he took before the police.

The buildup was good, with a few interesting characters, a quirky situation, witty dialogues, and a well-set-up mystery, but it loses its way after the interval.

Neram was fresh at the time of its release, but with a similar story, Gold does not have that freshness. We have seen all these many times.

We see Alphonse trying too hard with the editing and effects. In some areas, it works and in others, it doesn’t.

Pulsating, but falls flat at times

Another downside for me was the runtime. The flick sags a little in the second half — especially towards the end — but otherwise moved along at a steady rate.

Also, some parts don’t have any use, like the unconnected, unrelated dance sequence and Soubin Shahir’s scenes. They worked against the movie.

In the same way, the comical portion of Lalu Alex and Ajmal Ameer becomes unbearable after a couple of scenes. And the ending? Better left unsaid.

Like in Premam , we see a lot of shots of butterflies, ants, grasshoppers, and the sky in Gold .

But unlike Premam , where such shots worked in favour of the metaphor, they are more like inserts or fillers in Gold .

It felt like they were trying to be something and just couldn’t quite get there.

Gold is not boring, but it just lacks punch. It brought a smile to my face a few times, but still lacked memorable moments.

It was pulsating at times, but fell flat most of the time.

Is it worth watching? It is definitely a good one-time watchable comedy thriller. Rajesh Murugesan’s soundtrack helps the movie enormously.

Gold movie review: Neglects Nayanthara, wastes Prithviraj's zeal and redefines lack of cohesion

Seven years after his mega-success with Premam, Alphonse Puthren misses the mark while trying to reinvent the musical with Gold.

It has been seven years since the release of Alphonse Puthren’s Premam , a runaway box-office success that has gone on to attain a cult status, was one of the earliest films from the New Malayalam New Wave to become a pan-India hit, cemented Nivin Pauly’s standing as a star, catapulted Sai Pallavi on her path to the superstardom she now has across language industries, and gave both Anupama Parameswaran and Vinay Forrt their most memorable roles till date. Such an achievement would weigh heavy on the shoulders of any normal person – its burden is evident in the conception of the director’s new release.

Gold is a star-studded exercise in reinventing the musical as we know it in India. Since the musical is the norm and not merely a genre in this country, any effort at re-envisioning it here makes sense only if it is markedly visionary. Gold is not.

It is possible to imagine that Gold sounded attractive at the conceptual stage, which would explain why the leading man is so sold on it. Prithviraj Sukumaran throws himself into his role with gusto, and has produced the film. His zeal is not matched by the writing and direction.

Team Alphonse starts out with some good ideas for Gold. The film works in bits and pieces. Some of the music-led sequences are well-conceived. In its entirety though, the narrative so completely lacks cohesion and reasoning, and is so transparent in its attempts at being cool that it is little more than a bid to be different for the heck of it.

Prithviraj in Gold is an entrepreneur called Joshi who one day finds the entrance to his front yard blocked by an abandoned SUV. Unknown to him, it was left there by a bunch of criminals who are now anxious to retrieve its precious cargo. Meanwhile, Joshi has alerted the police. As he waits for them to take the vehicle into their custody, he discovers what it contains.

This is a well-off man who runs a smartphone shop in a posh mall and lives with his mother (Mallika Sukumaran) in a spacious riverside home built by his father. Money is not in short supply for him, but greed is a monster that, ironically, consumes the wealthy perhaps more than any other strata of society. So the question is if he will retain his integrity in the face of the temptation laid out before him on a platter, and what the police will find out.

On the sidelines of this principal strand is Joshi’s proposed marriage to Radha (Deepti Sati). Off the radar of his awareness are the shenanigans of a gold trader named Unnikrishnan (Shammi Thilakan), his daughter’s father-in-law-to-be, Shaji (Lalu Alex), and petty criminals led by a fellow they all address as Boss Freddy (Chemban Vinod Jose).

Instead of going full throttle into the moral dilemma facing Joshi and an examination of what an open window can do to even a saint, Gold stays determinedly on the surface of this story as if fearing that depth would diminish its enjoyability. This might still have been okay if its frothiness was entertaining. In the pre-interval half, it is, while everyone and everything are being introduced, when musical set-pieces erupt on screen without a by-your-leave, and stars start popping up for walk-on parts following which they disappear. The unnecessary on-screen graphics are an irritant even in this portion, but remain tolerable as long as there is hope that Gold may go somewhere, if not in terms of storyline then at least in terms of experimentation in format. In the second half though, all this comes across as a cover-up for lack of substance.

Anend C. Chandran and Viswajith Odukkathil shoot the flora and fauna around Joshi’s house in Discovery-Channel-style detail. Since the film fails to add up, these stunning visuals feel pointless after a while. Likewise, the sudden insertion of lines from an old Bollywood song into a Malayalam number. The rhythm is addictive, the switch in language inexplicable in this setting, and ultimately it enhances the “see how hip I am” vibe that Gold gives off.

Though the screen is not overloaded and crowded in Gold as it was in Thallumaala earlier this year, it is in that neighbourhood. Wipes are used once too often. The non-linear timeline is spelt out again and again with the written words “minutes earlier”, “X months later”, etc. When characters first walk in, their names are flashed in bold letters; sometimes, so are their actions, emotions and descriptions of them. For instance, when Shaji’s son says a particular job has to be assigned not to old-style hooligans but to a new-generation goonda, Roshan Mathew enters the scene to the accompaniment of the words “new-gen goonda” on screen next to him.

Initially, the film has a sense of humour, but as the minutes pass, the jokes get flat. One running gag about Shaji – who’s known as Idea Shaji – is unfunny from the beginning but becomes a stronger sleeping pill with each repetition. The dullest comedic thread that’s kept up throughout involves Joshi’s mother. Each time we see her, she’s either offering to make tea and snacks for guests and Joshi, or making them, or serving them. She does nothing else. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada. This is no doubt meant to be hilarious; at a stretch, it might even have been a clever comment on how patriarchy influences women’s view of their role in society and the family. The joke’s on Gold though, considering how blatantly it sidelines women.

You cannot mock patriarchy if you are one of its facilitators. Believe it or not, Joshi’s Mum is the only somewhat-fleshed-out woman character in this film that features barely any women. Unnikrishnan’s wife (Shanthi Krishna) and a policewoman have negligible roles. And one of India’s biggest stars, Nayanthara, has been roped in to just sit around. At least Deepti Sati gets to showcase her dance skills as she and Prithviraj throw their hearts, souls and bodies into Thanne Thanne . Nayanthara’s Sumangali is positioned as a primary player in the story, but is so neglected that she amounts to less than the film’s numerous cameos.

The casting of multiple famous actors in tiny roles ends up being gimmicky because most serve no purpose. If the intention was to rival the star presence in Aashiq Abu’s Virus (2019), then the makers of Gold have not understood that film at all. Virus ’ star-heavy ensemble conveyed the point that every single person involved in Kerala’s real-life experience with Nipah was crucial in containing the deadly outbreak. Each of their characters was given definition and density. In Gold , all we have is a game of “hey look, the producers managed to get Star X (and Star Y and A, B, C) too” which stops being fun after a while, especially as the writing and direction lose steam. Vinay Forrt is the only actor whose cameo makes any sense as a cameo.

Vinay, Rajesh Murugesan’s music, the scenic beauty surrounding Joshi’s home, Prithviraj’s commitment to this script, his dancing with Deepti, and two pulsating dance passages led by Aleena Alphonse Puthren are all that lingers in the mind after the credits of Gold have passed.

Despite its flaws, Gold ’s first half is entertaining. The post-interval downhill slide is so rapid, that the twist in the finale left me cold. No amount of catchy music, production polish and star wattage can camouflage skin-and-bones writing. Gold plating, after all, is just that – plating.
