The President of Pakistan

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

Message from President of Pakistan on the occasion of Kashmir Solidarity Day i.e., 5th February 2023

Today, we observe Kashmir Solidarity Day to express Pakistan’s unflinching support for the legitimate and just struggle of the Kashmiri people for the realization of their inalienable right to self-determination. On this occasion, we pay rich tribute to the selfless sacrifices made by our Kashmiri brothers and sisters during their decades-old resistance to the Indian occupation.

We observe this day to draw the attention of the international community towards the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions which provide that the final disposition of the Jammu and Kashmir Dispute would be made in accordance with the will of the people, expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.

Over the last 75 years, the Indian occupation forces have unleashed a reign of terror and carried out a relentless campaign to intimidate and suppress the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The presence of more than 900,000 Indian armed personnel has turned the region into an open prison. India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 in IIOJK were a blatant violation of international law, including the UN Charter, the 4 th Geneva Convention, and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. India has been consistently engaged in efforts to further entrench these illegal measures through artificial demographic changes, political engineering, economic marginalization of the local people and an assault on Kashmiri identity and culture.

It is alarming that India is undertaking demographic changes in IIOJK by bringing non-Kashmiris to settle in the valley. India’s heavy-handed approach frequently manifests itself in extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, custodial torture, enforced disappearances and the use of pellet guns in IIOJK. India has muzzled the media and incarcerated the Kashmiri leadership and defenders of human rights. These excesses and brutalities have been well-documented by several human rights organizations and international media outlets.

Today, Pakistan calls upon India to allow unfettered access to the UN and OIC observers, international media and human rights organizations to IIOJK to obtain first-hand information about the situation there, and investigate and report the human rights violations. Pakistan also urges the international community and organizations to take practical steps to hold India accountable for its gross and widespread human rights violations in IIOJK.

Pakistan has consistently maintained that a lasting solution to the Jammu and Kashmir Dispute is possible only in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and wishes of the Kashmiri people. Pakistan will continue to extend its unstinted moral, diplomatic and political support for this just cause.

5 Feb Kashmir Solidarity Day: Call for Strengthening Pakistan’s Kashmir Policy

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

Kashmir solidarity day is observed every year on 5 February in Pakistan to support the freedom struggle of Kashmiris in Indian Illegally occupied Kashmir. Kashmir solidarity day was observed in 1990, first time in history when Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif called the nation to observe the day for the succession of the freedom fighter movement. Later, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) announced a public holiday on 5th February to express solidarity with Kashmir.

This day is observed as a holiday all over the country, involving the orchestration of conferences, seminars, rallies at political level in various parts of the country. Additionally, special events are arranged at the school and college levels to make students aware of the importance of the day. During these events, students represent Kashmiri culture and show their solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

Kashmir has been under brutal occupation of India for 75 years since partition. Despite United Nations resolutions calling for the contemplation of the will of Kashmir in deciding disposition of the state, people of Kashmir are deprived of their rightful rights. For instance, UNSCR 38(1948) and 122 (1957) clearly stated that any change in J&K would be informed immediately to the security council and any action by IIOJ&K to change the status or shape of the region would not represent the disposition of the state as per the resolutions of UNSC. India’s attempt to amalgamate the territory of Kashmir into the Indian Union by revoking Article 370 and 35, which guaranteed special autonomy status to the territory on August 5, 2019, was an ostensible violation of United Nations resolutions.

Since 1989, the Indian forces in occupied territories have been responsible for the deaths of 96,000 Kashmiris, the widowing of approximately 23,000 women, the rape of over 11,250 women and girls, and the destruction of more than 100,000 homes, including schools and houses. As of 2019, there were approximately 700,000 Indian armed forces in the region, and this number increased by at least 35,000 before the August 2019 lockdown, which resulted in the unilateral revocation of Kashmir’s special status within the Indian Union. Due to a communication blackout and the erosion of the judiciary’s authority, it is challenging to ascertain the number and whereabouts of detained individuals, as some Kashmiris are being deported under administrative detention to various states, where some have died. Human rights activists and journalists are apprehended on false charges of terrorism, alleging links with terrorist organizations. By September 2020, about 600,000 domiciles were issued to people outside the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). India’s motivation for this action is believed to be a response to potential challenges, particularly if it has to hold a plebiscite in the future under international pressure, ensuring support from Hindus who might choose to align with India.

Furthermore, the genocide photos of the two Indian-origin soldiers posing in the Palestinian child’s bed after killing him raised serious apprehensions regarding the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in India and Kashmir. The Indian media itself endorsed the Indian forces’ act of abetting Israel in the fight against Hamas. S. Chakravorty (an Indian diplomat) said, ‘I don’t know why we don’t follow the Israeli model. If Israel can follow it in the Middle East, we can also do it in Kashmir.’ On one occasion in 2019, the Indian plan of genocide was revealed with the slip of the tongue of an Indian diplomat when he said India would adopt Israel’s model to ethnically cleanse Muslims and resettle the Hindu population in Kashmir. Additionally, an Indian priest appealed to Israel to let his followers in India join the fight because whatever cancer they are fighting with, India has been suffering from it for decades.

Pakistan has always supported the right of self-determination of the people of Kashmir and raised its concerns at the international level. In a recent visit to the USA on December 16, 2023, the Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Muneer, underscored the need to resolve the Kashmir conflict according to United Nations resolutions. Furthermore, in a recent move, the appointment of Meshal Malik, the wife of Kashmiri separatist movement leader Yasin Malik, as a Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on human rights is an attempt to revive the Kashmir agenda in the Prime Minister’s office of Pakistan.

This doesn’t stop here; Pakistan needs to rejuvenate its policy towards Kashmir. If India can invest in digital propaganda against Pakistan and Kashmir, Pakistan should develop a robust policy by making investments in Kashmir research institutes and literature work to provide researchers with incentives to keep highlighting the cause of Kashmir. They should also engage young people through workshops and intensive discussions – ensuring the process is inclusive of people with a range of different opinions and from different backgrounds.

Along with that, the youth of Pakistan should play its role in the Kashmir cause. The purpose of revoking Article 370 was to silence the voices of Kashmiris, and we should keep it alive by continuing to write about how India is adopting a Rashtra policy to ethnically cleanse Kashmiris, fortifying it with absurd verdicts based on political agendas rather than a legitimate cause. Namely, the Indian Supreme Court verdict on the revocation of Article 370 by the Indian government.

On September 20th, 2019, Kashmiri artists joined forces with British-Kashmiri artist Sumaya Teli and Kashmiri-American artist Nouf Bazaz to emphasize the theme “Resist to Exist.” This collaborative event aimed to spotlight the Kashmiri struggle against Indian occupation and militarization, advocating for the right to Kashmiri self-determination. The initiative gained widespread attention globally, reaching various parts of the world and serving as a means for youth to comprehend the Kashmir situation and the mistreatment of Kashmiri people by India.

The youth of Pakistan should also engage in dialogue on the Kashmir conflict by organizing seminars, conferences, and debating competitions at their respective institutes. Moreover, they should utilize social media platforms to connect with the Kashmiri diaspora and individuals actively involved in the Kashmir struggle. Hosting dialogues on Twitter spaces can help in continuously highlighting the Kashmir freedom struggle and sharing the stories of victims of the brutal Indian occupation there.

Over the past six to seven years, the Kashmir Conflict has witnessed a transformation through the influence of digital media, creating an environment that enables young researchers and activists to access information and grasp the intricacies of the conflict, while also championing the cause of freedom for future generations. Being a diplomatic supporter of Kashmir cause and a claimant of the territory, more efforts are requisite from Pakistan’s side.

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

  • Pakistan observes Kashmir Solidarity Day every year on Feb. 5 to express its support for people living in Indian-administered Kashmir
  • Internationally disputed region has been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar expressed his “unwavering support” for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir territory as Pakistan observes a public holiday today, Monday, to show solidarity with Kashmiris.

The Muslim-majority Himalayan region of Kashmir has been a flashpoint between Pakistan and India since their independence from British rule in 1947. Both Pakistan and India rule parts of the Himalayan territory, but claim it in full and have fought two out of three wars over the disputed region.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for the right of self-determination for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir and urged New Delhi to hold a plebiscite in line with the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

“He [Kakar] said that the ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ was annually observed on the 5th February to express Pakistan’s unwavering support to the Kashmiri people’s just struggle for realization of their right to self-determination,” the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said, quoting Kakar.

Every year on Feb. 5, people from all walks of life hold demonstrations, form human chains and organize events in many parts of the country to express their support for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir.

In connection with the Kashmir Solidarity Day, a walk is scheduled to be held in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad today, which would see participation from cabinet members, parliamentarians and people from different walks of life, according to the state-run Radio Pakistan.

In his message for Kashmir Solidarity Day, Pakistan’s President Dr. Arif Alvi said Kashmiris have been struggling for their rights for the past 76 years.

“Today, IIOJK [Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir] is one of the most militarized zones in the world. Kashmiris are living in an environment of fear and intimidation,” Alvi said.

In December last year, India’s Supreme Court upheld a 2019 decision by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke special autonomous status for Indian-administered Kashmir and set a deadline of Sept. 30 next year for state polls to be held.

The Modi government’s repealing of Article 370 of the constitution in 2019 allowed people from the rest of the country to have the right to acquire property in Indian-administered Kashmir and settle there permanently.

Kashmiris, rights groups and critics of the Indian government had termed the move an attempt to dilute the demographics of the only Muslim-majority Indian state.

It also heightened tensions between Pakistan and India, with Islamabad vowing not to normalize ties with New Delhi until it reverses its August 5 move.

Pakistan dispatches firefighters to combat koh-e-sulaiman forest blaze in khyber pakhtunkhwa.

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

  • Two years ago, a significant fire broke out in the same mountain range in Balochistan that lasted for two weeks
  • The fire that burnt over 100,000 pine nut trees damaged people’s livelihood and was extinguished with Iranian help

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistan dispatched a 16-member team of firefighters to respond to a blaze in the pine nut forests of the Koh-e-Sulaiman range in the Darazinda subdivision on Wednesday, according to a statement circulated by Rescue 1122, the country’s premier emergency response service. This is not the first such incident in the region’s pine nut forests. A significant fire broke out in the Sherani district, part of the same range that straddles Pakistan’s western provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in May 2022. The blaze lasted over two weeks, destroying a large portion of the ancient pine nut trees, with reports suggesting over 100,000 trees were burned, causing significant damage to the local ecosystem. Rescue 1122 said in a statement it constituted the firefighting team and immediately dispatched it to the area upon receiving information about the latest fire. “The rescue team has been equipped with all necessary firefighting gear, including fire extinguishers, personal protective equipment and other essential items required for working in mountainous areas,” the statement said. “In such emergencies, methods like smoldering and starvation are employed to extinguish the fire, which involves cutting off the fire’s access to oxygen and fuel,” it added.

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

The rescue service explained such firefighting approach is used in areas where it is impossible to reach with fire trucks or tenders due to the high mountains, requiring firefighters to travel long distances on foot to implement the strategy based on the site’s conditions. The 2022 fire in the Sherani district in Balochistan prompted Pakistan to seek assistance from Iran, which sent an air tanker to help extinguish the flames.

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

Such recurrent fires highlight the vulnerability of the region, where pine nut forests are not only ecologically valuable but also provide a livelihood for many locals. Rescue 1122 noted that its Dera Ismail Khan team previously helped extinguish the fire in the Koh-e-Sulaiman mountain range within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region before assisting in firefighting efforts in Balochistan. The team participated in the operation for several days alongside Rescue 1122 emergency response groups from Tank, Lakki Marwat and Bannu the statement added.

Road accidents kill 12 in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

  • Three accidents were reported in Balochistan’s Sibi, Washuk, and Chaghi districts, injuring several people
  • Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan due to dilapidated infrastructure and reckless driving

QUETTA: At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in three deadly road accidents in Pakistan’s impoverished southwestern Balochistan province on Tuesday, according to government officials. Fatal accidents are common in Pakistan, where traffic rules are rarely followed and roads, particularly in rural and mountainous areas, are in poor condition. Such incidents are frequent in Balochistan, where single-carriage roads connect various cities, and even some highways lack modern safety features. Speaking to Arab News about the first incident, Assistant Commissioner of Sibi Mansoor Ali Shah confirmed that a Jacobabad-bound passenger van from Quetta collided with a truck, resulting in fatalities and injuries among the travelers. “At least six people from various districts of Balochistan were killed and 13 injured in the incident,” Shah said over the phone. “The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals.” He added that the crash occurred due to speeding, as the van driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle on the single-carriage Quetta-Sukkur highway. Another incident occurred in the evening when two vehicles, locally known as Zambad, had a head-on collision while traveling in the mountainous Washuk district, resulting in the deaths of four people. “One Zambad vehicle was carrying smuggled Iranian oil, while the other had only the driver when they collided near a mountainous area close to the Washuk-Panjgur district,” Assistant Commissioner Shahzad Zehri told Arab News. “Fire broke out in both vehicles due to the smuggled Iranian oil, and the people onboard were burnt to death,” he continued, adding that the bodies had been shifted to a local hospital for medico-legal procedures and identification. Blue-colored right-hand-drive Iranian Zamyads, locally known as Zambads, are frequently used for smuggling Iranian goods that enter Pakistan through various points along the 904-kilometer border between the two countries. In the third accident, two people, including a woman, were killed after attending a wedding party. They were traveling in a vehicle that overturned due to speeding in Dak, an area in Chaghi district. Assistant Commissioner of the region, Basit Buzdar, said seven people were on board the vehicle, which was coming from Nushki. “Two people, including a woman, were killed, and five others were injured in the accident,” he told Arab News. Buzdar added that the injured were shifted to Prince Fahad Hospital Dalbandin. “The speeding vehicle overturned after the driver lost control on a muddy track along the Quetta-Taftan highway,” he said, sharing details of the accident.

Real estate developer says cleared to bid for Pakistan’s flag carrier

speech on kashmir day 5 february in pakistan

  • Government said earlier this month six companies have been shortlisted as potential PIA bidders
  • Top Blue World City official says the group is also planning to acquire Islamabad airport operations

KARACHI: A Pakistani real estate development company said on Wednesday it had completed requirements to enter the bidding process for a stake in the country’s flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), scheduled for later this week. The cash-strapped government, which is looking to privatize the loss-making airline, said earlier this month six companies had been shortlisted as potential bidders. But only one company met a Tuesday deadline to submit “earnest money” prior to final bidding, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday citing a privatization commission official. The chairman of Blue World City, Saad Nazir, confirmed to Reuters in a text message that his company is the only one to enter the final bidding process, declining to disclose the earnest money it had submitted. The privatization ministry did not immediately reply to request for comment outside business hours. Islamabad has previously said it was putting on the block a stake of between 51 percent and 100 percent in the debt-ridden airline as part of reforms urged by the International Monetary Fund. Blue World City, a real estate developer, has a consortium that includes Blue World Aviation and IRIS Communication Limited. • UNRWA was established in 1949 to help Palestinians and has long been a target of Israeli criticism
  • PM Sharif condemns Israel’s decision to obstruct the UN agency’s work in the occupied territories

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday condemned Israel’s decision to ban the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating in the occupied Palestinian territories, urging the international community to hold the administration in Tel Aviv accountable for violating international law and the United Nations Charter. UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide education, health care and other services to Palestinian refugees and has long been a target of Israeli criticism. Since October 2023, Israel has accused it of facilitating Hamas activities, leading to its ban earlier this week on Monday. The decision coincides with the deaths of nearly 180 UNRWA staff members in the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, part of a broader toll of over 220 humanitarian workers killed. The situation has drawn global condemnation, with UN officials highlighting the unprecedented loss of life among aid workers. “Strongly condemn Israel’s actions aimed at obstructing UNRWA’s operations inside the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” Sharif wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “By preventing critical relief assistance from reaching millions of helpless Palestinians, Israel is committing yet another blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the @UN Charter for which it must be held accountable by the international community,” he added.

A day earlier, Pakistan’s top diplomat at the UN also raised the issue at the world body, calling the UN agency “irreplaceable” due to its vital role in serving millions of Palestinians. “The passage of the bills by Israeli parliament concerning UNRWA is further evidence that Israel is doubling down on its genocidal war against Palestinians by cutting off the lifeline for the Palestinians provided by UNRWA and other UN entities,” Ambassador Munir Akram said, according to an official statement released by Pakistan’s diplomatic mission.

Nearly two million people in Gaza rely on the agency for aid, with about one million using its shelters for food and health care in the enclave. The agency has provided Palestinians with everything from food and health care to education and psychological support for decades. “Any effort to diminish its role will have severe humanitarian and regional consequences,” Akram added.
