A sensibly written and executed movie, wherein it beautifully sets up the mood and explores a well nuanced romantic relationship within the crime thriller format. Both the lead characterizations get realistically written with credible backstories, and along with the brilliant performances from Tovino Thomas and Aishwarya Lakshmi, they make it so easy to connect and immerse in their world. Every other supporting characters too get seamlessly incorporated in the smoothly flowing narrative, without hindering the emotional soul. A highly satisfying watch.

It's a beautiful film, that leaves you with a giddy feeling in the end. What really works here is that the director really nails the tone of the film. The female character, Aparna, is so well written, and she nails every beat of the character. Cinematography was another stand out, almost every frame looks like a painting, just brilliant composition.

The director really knew how to structure a scene which paid off in the end as it blended well with the score and music.

Mayaanadhi movie review: Aishwarya Lekshmi, Tovino Thomas headline the romance of the year from Mollywood

Mayaanadhi is a befitting December release in a year that has witnessed some great works from Malayalam cinema.

“Sex is not a promise.” I cannot believe I just heard these words from a heroine in a mainstream Mollywood venture. Aparna Ravi a.k.a. Aps in _Mayaanadhi (_Mystic River) is a far cry from the coy virgins of past Indian films for whom sex was usually a mistake that almost inevitably led to a pregnancy.

This is not to say that other women in Malayalam films – or Indian cinema at large – have not gotten between the sheets with heroes in the past. Just this year, one of the most comical sequences in Angamaly Diaries involved a woman visiting the male protagonist in hospital to offer more than just sympathy. Their sexual escapades were designed as a source of amusement though, and the woman in question was not the heroine. In too many other Indian films, sex between a leading man and woman who are not married to each other has become a sort of mandatory signifier of coolth used by conservative filmmakers to mask their conservatism and/or establish how with-it they are. Exhibit No. 1: Aditya Chopra’s painfully self-conscious “look at me, look how progressive I am” Befikre from Bollywood in 2016. Exhibit No. 2: Mani Ratnam’s aiming-to-be-modern but ultimately conformist O Kadhal Kanmani from Kollywood in 2015.

Hear this, dear Indian filmmakers: showing your heroine having sex is not an indicator of your film’s liberalism, giving your heroine agency is. The difference between aspiring to be feminist on this front (or faking it) and genuine conviction is in evidence in Mayaanadhi .

Aashiq Abu’s new film stars Aishwarya Lekshmi as Aparna and Tovino Thomas as her on-again, off-again boyfriend John Matthew a.k.a. Mathan. Aparna is an acting aspirant who has been earning a living by emceeing and modelling while she works towards a break in films. Mathan was her senior in college and is now a professional racketeer. Each has a challenging family background, his is far more troubling than hers.

Mayaanadhi is a romance disguised as a crime thriller. When the curtain goes up, a series of events unfold that force Mathan into hiding. While he stays low key to escape the police, the film explores his long-standing relationship with Aparna, which is now in the doldrums since she no longer trusts him for reasons that are completely his fault.

Aparna is a bright, determined, professionally ambitious woman who knows her mind in all matters except Mathan. They have been friends as much as lovers – a magical combination that is hard to recover from. Though her head tells her he spells trouble, she remains as fond of him as she is attracted to him. The film stays with them as he desperately tries to get her back in his life while she is torn between her affection for him and her desire to get over him.

There is so much to recommend in Mayaanadhi . The attractive Aishwarya Lekshmi, for one, a model-turned-actor who is effortlessly glamorous on screen. She made her film debut earlier this year in the only awkwardly written passage in the otherwise excellent Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela . In Mayaanadhi she is handed a vast canvas and wonderfully nuanced writing to display her considerable acting chops.

Tovino Thomas has had a year that most actors can only dream of. If in Oru Mexican Aparatha he was a gritty and grim political activist, in Godha he was a man-child, and here in Mayaanadhi we get the full blast of his versatility as he aces Mathan’s irresistible boyish charm and longing for his Aps.

(Spoiler alert) That scene in which Mathan lightly accuses Aparna of “talking like a prostitute” and instantly regrets his words is a fine example of great writing meeting great acting. Her reply, in sharp contrast to his unevolved reaction to their rendezvous, reminded me of Shruti’s response in the morning-after scene in Band Baaja Baaraat (Hindi, 2010) in which Bittoo expresses regret for their sexual encounter, as if it is a catastrophe that he as a man must take responsibility for. (Spoiler alert ends)

For its non-traditionalism, smooth flow, credible characters and situations and so much else, the true stars of Mayaanadhi are director Aashiq Abu and his frequent collaborators, writers Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair. Their lead pair come across as real people with real dilemmas. Neither of them is flawless, but unlike in most commercial Indian cinema, the man’s mess-ups in the relationship are not casually justified or glorified. And it is a joy to see a woman who is strong but not in a cliched filmi fashion: her strength is believably human and not divine.

Team Mayaanadhi draws us into Aparna and Mathan’s story so effectively that we ache for them. The film’s atmospherics are compelling. DoP Jayesh Mohan ensures that Mayaanadhi is visually exquisite. His colour palette is dominated by whites, blacks and steely grays in the outdoors, almost as if Kerala in this film is experiencing an icy winter it never does in reality. This cinematographic choice serves to build up a sense of immense sadness and a feeling of foreboding around the fate of Aparna and Mathan’s romance.

There is also a largeness and grandeur to his outdoor frames, but the director’s narrative style is such that when Aparna and Mathan are together on screen, nothing matters but these two. He also wisely eschews song and dance numbers that are characteristic of commercial Indian cinema. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is allowed to distract from the ruminative mood of the narrative and the twosome around whom it revolves.

Till the interval, I remember being curious about the mystery behind the crimes we witness in the film’s opening scenes. Those questions recede into the background by the second half, by which time I found myself more preoccupied with what to expect for Aparna and Mathan as a couple.

There are plenty of other people around them, including some characters with stories that are striking even though their time on screen is limited. The actor Sameera played by Leona Lishoy, her autocratic brother (Soubin Shahir) and Aparna’s emotionally needy mother all leave an impression, yet somehow the film seems mysteriously depopulated. This is the most remarkable aspect of Mayaanadhi: Abu builds his narrative in such a way that his satellite characters are not neglected but his lead couple are lost in their own thoughts and their own world, and I found myself lost in them.

This is what gives Mayaanadhi its fine balance between being relatable and yet being an epic romance. It is a befitting December release in a year that has witnessed some great works from Malayalam cinema.

Set against the backdrop of Mayiladuthurai, Maayanadhi is the tale of a doting father and her daughter, a brilliant school student, who aspires to be a doctor. How fate separates them because of the latter’s relationship with an auto driver forms the crux of the story. For Anbarasan, a widower, his world revolves around his daughter Kauslaya (Venba). A practical and caring father, Anbarasan doesn’t have an iota of doubt on Kausalya even when his brother tells him that she has started going out with someone. He trusts only his daughter and doesn’t mind going to any extend to fulfill her desires. She, too, holds him in high regard and discusses about everything under sun to him.

దిల్‌రాజు కుటుంబం నుంచి వచ్చి హీరోగా తెరకు పరిచయమయ్యారు ఆశిష్‌. తొలి ప్రయత్నంలో ‘రౌడీ బాయ్స్‌’తో మిశ్రమ ఫలితాన్ని అందుకున్న ఆయన.. ఇప్పుడు రెండో ప్రయత్నంలో ‘లవ్‌ మీ’తో అలరించేందుకు సిద్ధమయ్యారు. ‘బేబీ’తో మెప్పించిన వైష్ణవి చైతన్య నాయికగా నటించడం.. టీజర్, ట్రైలర్లకు ఆదరణ దక్కడం.. ప్రేక్షకుల్లో దీనిపై మంచి అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. కథేంటంటే: అర్జున్‌ (ఆశిష్‌)కు దేవుడు, దెయ్యాలపై అసలు నమ్మకం ఉండదు. ఎక్కడైనా దెయ్యాలున్నాయని తెలిస్తే చాలు అక్కడికి వెళ్లి.. అవి లేవని సాక్ష్యాధారాలతో సహా నిరూపిస్తుంటాడు. ఆ వీడియోలన్నింటినీ తన యూట్యూబ్‌ ఛానెల్‌లో పెట్టి డబ్బులు సంపాదిస్తుంటాడు. ఈ విషయంలో అతనికి తన సోదరుడు ప్రతాప్‌ (రవికృష్ణ) కూడా సహాయ పడుతుంటాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో ఓసారి అర్జున్‌కు ప్రతాప్‌ ప్రియురాలు ప్రియ (వైష్ణవి చైతన్య) ద్వారా దివ్యవతి అనే దెయ్యం గురించి తెలుస్తుంది. తెలంగాణ - కర్ణాటక సరిహద్దుల్లో ఉన్న ఓ ఊరిలోని పాడుబడ్డ అపార్ట్‌మెంట్‌లో ఆ దెయ్యం తిరుగుతోందని.. ఆమె గురించి తెలుసుకోవాలని ప్రయత్నించిన చాలా మందిని హతమార్చిందని తెలుసుకుంటాడు. (Love Me Review Telugu) ఆ కథ విన్నాక అర్జున్‌ ఎలాగైనా ఆ దెయ్యాన్ని తన ప్రేమలో పడేయాలని నిర్ణయించుకుని అక్కడికి వెళ్తాడు. మరి ఆ తర్వాత తనెలాంటి పరిణామాల్ని ఎదుర్కొన్నాడు? దివ్యవతి కథేంటి? ఆమెకు గతంలో కనిపించకుండా పోయిన పల్లవి, నూర్, ఛరిష్మాలకు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? అసలు దివ్యవతి కథను అర్జున్‌ దగ్గరకు ప్రియ ఎందుకు చేర్చింది? అన్నది తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే!

ఎలా ఉందంటే: ఇదొక విభిన్నమైన పాయింట్‌తో తెరకెక్కిన రొమాంటిక్‌ హారర్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌. ఓ యువకుడు దెయ్యాన్ని ప్రేమలో దింపాలని ప్రయత్నిస్తే ఎలాంటి పరిణామాలెదురయ్యాయన్నది క్లుప్తంగా ఈ చిత్ర కథాంశం. పేపర్‌పై వినూత్నంగా అనిపించే ఈ కథను తెరపై అంతే కొత్తగా చూపించడం తేలికేం కాదు. దెయ్యాన్ని మనిషి ప్రేమించడమన్నది కన్విన్సింగ్‌గా చెప్పడం ఓ సవాల్‌. అయితే.. ఆ ప్రేమకథను కొత్తగా చూపించడమన్నది ఇంకో సవాల్‌. దానికి తోడు ఈ కథ కొంతమేర ఇన్వెస్టిగేటివ్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌ కోణంలో సాగుతుంది. (Love Me Review Telugu)  ఇలా రెండు జానర్లను మిళితం చేసి ఎలాంటి గందరగోళం లేకుండా ఓ కథను అనుకున్నట్లుగా చెప్పగలగడం కత్తి మీద సామే. ఈ విషయంలో కొత్త దర్శకుడు అరుణ్‌ భీమవరపు అనుభవం సరిపోలేదనిపిస్తుంది. తాను రాసుకున్న కథలో కొత్తదనమున్నా.. దాన్ని లాజికల్‌గా ప్రేక్షకులు కన్విన్స్‌ అయ్యేలా చెప్పడంలో తడబడ్డారు. దీనికి తోడు సినిమాలో ట్విస్ట్‌లా సెట్‌ చేసి పెట్టుకున్న అమ్మాయిల మిస్సింగ్‌ పాయింట్‌ కథను, ప్రేక్షకుల్ని పూర్తిగా గందరగోళానికి గురి చేసింది.

అర్జున్‌ చిన్నతనంలో తన ఊరిలో జరిగిన ఓ అసాధారణమైన మిస్టరీని చూపిస్తూ కథను ఆరంభించిన తీరు ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తిస్తుంది. ఇక ఆ తర్వాత దెయ్యాలు లేవని నిరూపించడంలో అర్జున్‌ శక్తిసామర్థ్యాల్ని పరిచయం చేస్తూ ఓ హారర్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌ తెరపైకి వస్తుంది. కానీ, అదంత థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా అనిపించదు. అర్జున్‌ ప్రపంచం.. ప్రతాప్‌తో కలిసి చేసే ప్రయాణం.. ప్రియ పరిచయ సన్నివేశాలు.. అన్నీ సాదాసీదాగా అనిపిస్తాయి. ప్రియ.. దివ్యవతి కథను అర్జున్‌కు పరిచయం చేసినప్పటి నుంచే అసలు కథ మొదలవుతుంది. ఆ దెయ్యాన్ని ప్రేమిస్తానంటూ అర్జున్‌ ఆమె అపార్టుమెంట్‌కు వెళ్లడం.. ఆరంభంలో అక్కడ తనకు ఎదురయ్యే అనుభవాలు.. అక్కడి ప్రపంచం.. అన్నీ థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా అనిపిస్తాయి. (Love Me Review Telugu)  దీనికి తగ్గట్లుగానే ద్వితీయార్ధంపై అంచనాలు పెంచేలా విరామ సన్నివేశాల్ని తీర్చిదిద్దుకున్న తీరు బాగుంది. దివ్యవతి దెయ్యం కాదు బతికే ఉందని నిరూపించడం కోసం అర్జున్‌ చేసే అన్వేషణతో ద్వితీయార్ధం ఆసక్తికరంగా మొదలవుతుంది. ఈ క్రమంలోనే కనిపించకుండా పోయిన ముగ్గురు అమ్మాయిల ఎపిసోడ్‌ తెరపైకి వస్తుంది. ఆరంభంలో ఈ ముగ్గురికి.. దివ్యవతికి ఉన్న లింకేంటన్నది ప్రేక్షకుల్లోనూ ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తించినా.. ఆ తర్వాత దాని చుట్టూ నడిపిన డ్రామా బాగా గందరగోళానికి గురి చేసింది. ఇక ప్రియ పాత్రలోని ట్విస్ట్‌ ఊహలకు అందేదే అయినా అర్జున్‌ పాత్ర వెనకున్న చిన్న మిస్టరీ కాస్త సర్‌ప్రైజ్‌కు గురి చేస్తుంది. రెండో భాగానికి లీడ్‌ ఇస్తూ క్లైమాక్స్‌లో సెట్‌ చేసిన ట్విస్ట్‌ థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గానే ఉంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: అర్జున్‌ పాత్రలో ఆశిష్‌ ఆద్యంతం సీరియస్‌గా ఒకే మూడ్‌లో కనిపించారు. నటన పరంగా అతనికి సవాల్‌ విసిరే అంశాలు దీంట్లో అంతగా ఏమీ లేవు. తన పాత్రకున్న సంభాషణలు కూడా చాలా తక్కువే. ప్రియ పాత్రలో వైష్ణవి తెరపై అందంగా కనిపించింది. ప్రథమార్ధంలో ఆమె పాత్రకు అంత ప్రాధాన్యత లేకున్నా.. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో కథ ఎక్కువగా తన చుట్టూనే తిరుగుతుంది. కొన్ని సీన్స్‌లో ఆమె పాత్రను తీర్చిదిద్దిన తీరు చూసినప్పుడు ‘బేబీ’ ఛాయలు కనిపిస్తాయి. ప్రతాప్‌గా రవికృష్ణ పాత్ర పరిధి మేర ఉంటుంది. దర్శకుడు అరుణ్‌ రాసుకున్న కథలో కొత్తదనమున్నా.. దాన్ని అంతే ఆసక్తికరంగా తెరపైకి తీసుకురాలేకపోయాడు. ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో కొంత వరకు కథ అక్కడక్కడే తిరిగిన అనుభూతి కలుగుతుంది. సెకండాఫ్‌లో బాగా కంగాళిగా తయారైంది. ఎం.ఎం.కీరవాణి నేపథ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకి ఆకర్షణ. పాటలు మరీ గుర్తుంచుకునేలా లేవు. ఈ కథకు తగ్గట్లుగా పిసి శ్రీరామ్‌ డార్క్‌ టోన్డ్‌ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ చక్కగా కుదిరింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు ఉన్నతంగా ఉన్నాయి.

X Movie Review In Telugu: ఓటీటీలో క్రైమ్ హారర్ థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీ ఎక్స్ ఈ మధ్య కాలంలో స్పెషల్‌గా మారింది. 2022లో వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా అమెజాన్ ప్రైమ్ ఓటీటీలో స్ట్రీమింగ్ అవుతోంది. వికృత వృద్ధ జంట (భార్యాభర్తలు) ముందు సెక్స్ సినిమాలు తీసిన ఆరుగురి పరిస్థితి ఏమైందో ఎక్స్ మూవీ రివ్యూలో తెలుసుకుందాం.

X Movie Review Telugu: ఓటీటీలోకి అనేక సినిమాలు వచ్చి పడుతుంటాయన్న విషయం తెలిసిందే. ముఖ్యంగా క్రైమ్, హారర్ థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమాలను ఓటీటీ ఆడియెన్స్ ఎక్కువగా ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తుంటారు. అలాంటిది క్రైమ్ హారర్ థ్రిల్లర్ అంశాలతో వచ్చిన ఓ సినిమా ఇప్పుడు స్పెషల్‌గా మారింది. ఆ మూవీ పేరే ఎక్స్ (X Movie 2022).

2022 సంత్సరంలో మార్చి 18న అమెరికాలో విడుదలైన ఈ సినిమా బాగానే రెస్పాన్స్ తెచ్చుకుంది. టి వెస్ట్ డైరెక్ట్ చేసిన ఈ సినిమాకు ఐమ్‌డీబీ పదికి 6.5 రేటింగ్ ఇచ్చింది. సుమారు వన్ మిలియన్ డాలర్ల (రూ. 8.22 కోట్లు) బడ్జెట్‌తో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ మూవీ 1.51 కోట్ల యూఎస్ డాలర్లను రాబట్టింది. ఇప్పుడు ఈ సినిమా అమెజాన్ ప్రైమ్ ఓటీటీ లో తెలుగులోనూ స్ట్రీమింగ్ అవుతోంది. మరి హారర్ క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్లర్ జోనర్‌లో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ ఎక్స్ మూవీ ఎలా ఉందో రివ్యూ లో తెలుసుకుందాం.

ముగ్గురు అమ్మాయిలు, ముగ్గురు అబ్బాయిలు కలిసి సెక్స్ సినిమాలు (పోర్న్ చిత్రాలు) తెరకెక్కించి బాగా ఫేమస్ అవ్వాలని, డబ్బు సంపాదించాలని అనుకుంటారు. అందుకోసం సిటీకి దూరంగా ఉన్న ఓ ఇంట్లోకి అద్దెకు దిగుతారు. ఆ ఇల్లు వికృతంగా కనిపించే ఓ వృద్ధ జంటది. అద్దెకు దిగడంతోనే ఇంట్లో పోర్న్ సినిమాలు చిత్రీకరించడం మొదలు పెడతారు.

అయితే ఇంటి ఓనర్ అయిన వృద్ధురాలికి సెక్స్ పిచ్చి. వయసు, గుండె సమస్య సహకరించకపోవడంతో లైంగిక చర్యకు ఆమె భర్త ఒప్పుకోడు. అలాంటి సమయంలో ఈ యువకుల జంట సెక్స్ సినిమాలు తీయడం స్టార్ట్ చేస్తారు. ఆ షూటింగ్ అంతా ఆ పండు ముసలావిడ చూస్తుంది. ఆ తర్వాత పోర్న్ సినిమాలు తీసే బ్యాచ్‌లో ఒక్కొక్కరిని ఆ వృద్ధ జంట చంపడం మొదలుపెడుతుంది.

అద్దెకు వచ్చిన వాళ్లను ఆ వృద్ధ జంట ఎందుకు చంపుతుంది? అసలు నడవటానికే అవస్థలు పడే వాళ్లు మంచి ఫిట్‌నెస్‌తో ఉన్నవాళ్లను ఎలా చంపారు? ఏ విధంగా హత్య చేశారు? అసలు ఆ వృద్ధ జంట కథేంటీ? పోర్న్ సినిమా బ్యాచ్ నుంచి ఎవరైనా తప్పించుకున్నారా? అనేది తెలియాలంటే మాత్రం కచ్చితంగా ఎక్స్ మూవీ చూడాల్సిందే.

ఓ ఇంట్లో వరుస డెడ్ బాడీలు ఉండటం, ఆ హత్యలు ఎలా జరిగాయో పోలీసులు ఇన్వెస్టిగేషన్ చేసే సన్నివేశంతో ఎక్స్ మూవీ స్టార్ట్ అవుతుంది. ఇదొక కొద్దిపాటి హార్రిఫిక్ అంశాలు మిక్స్ చేసిన క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీ. పోర్న్ సినిమాలు తీయాలనుకునే పాత్రల పరిచయం, వారి గోల్ ఏంటో చెబుతూ సినిమా స్టార్ట్ అవుతుంది. తర్వాత సిటీలోకి ప్రవేశించడం, అక్కడ వృద్ధ జంట ఇంట్లోకి ఎంట్రీ ఇవ్వడంతో అసలు కథ మొదలు అవుతుంది.

సెక్స్ సీన్స్-రక్తపాతం

పోర్న్ సినిమాలు చిత్రీకరించడం, వారిని అనుమానాస్పదంగా ఇంటి ఓనర్ గమనించడం థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా ఉంటాయి. ఇక పోర్న్ బ్యాచ్‌లోని లవ్ రిలేషన్‌షిప్, సెక్స్‌కి లవ్‌కి మధ్య వ్యత్యాసం చెబుతూ ఒకట్రెండు సీన్స్ ఉన్నాయి. వాళ్లందరినీ వృద్ధ జంట చంపే తీరు ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. వారు ఏమాత్రం తప్పించుకోని విధంగా ప్లాన్ చేసి చంపుతారు. ఓవరాల్‌గా సినిమాలో సెక్స్ సీన్స్, క్రైమ్, రక్తపాతం ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది. ఒకట్రెండు ట్విస్ట్స్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి.

EXCLUSIVE: I’m happy about my journey so far in cinema, says Rajesh Madhavan

The Malayalam actor talks about his theater background, latest release, friendship with director Ratheesh Balakrishnan, and much more.

Malayalam actor Rajesh Madhavan, a native of Kerala’s Kasargod, became popular with his debut Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016).

Apart from acting, worked as a casting director for Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022) and assistant director for Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum  (2017) and Kumbalangi Nights (2019) .

Rajesh Madhavan played the lead in director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval’s spin-off film Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hridayahariyaya Pranayakadha .

The flick has been receiving a good response from critics and audiences alike.

In an interview with South First, Rajesh Madhavan talks about his journey from a theater artist to a film actor, his latest release, his friendship with Ratheesh, and a lot more.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Tell us about your theater background.

A. In my school days, I was part of a theater group in Kasargod. I also studied drama along with schooling.

Though I’m from Kasargod, I have connections with Payyanur in Kannur. Payyanur is popular for amateur dramas and theater artists. Around 100-200 artists are part of any drama organised in Payyanur.

I must say, all this helped me understand the nuances of acting, filmmaking, and a lot more.

Q. Interestingly, Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hridayahariyaya Pranayakadha also has a theater backdrop. What were your contributions to the movie as a theater artist?

A. I was excited when I was told that the movie ( Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hridayahariyaya Pranayakadha ) has a drama backdrop.

The set was more like a drama camp and we all enjoyed the shooting process.

I wasn’t academically strong but I excelled in drama. I wrote and acted in drama.

During this process, my body also learnt a lot. It became a part of the drama and reacted accordingly.

I could control my body and experiment with it while playing different characters only because of my theater background.

Q. How did you come up with the idea of a spin-off movie?

A. The thought of a spin-off movie came after Nna Thaan Case Kodu became a super hit.

Post-success, many people spoke about Sumalatha-Suresh’s parallel story. That’s when we thought of bringing out a spin-off. We discussed the story and other aspects later.

Q. The movie also talks about caste discrimination. What is your take on it?

A: Caste discrimination is an ongoing issue in our society. In Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hridayahariyaya Pranayakadha , this has been highlighted in different periods.

However, director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval gets the credit for the satires on the issue. They were taken from his casual conversations on various social issues.

Q. Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hridayahariyaya Pranayakadha is shot in two to three periods. How was the shooting process?

A. We shot the 2013 period first, then the 2023 part, and next proceeded to the 90s and 60s.

Each period was shot during different schedules. We had to ensure the continuity of the characters, especially since they were all shown in different periods.

The shooting had a lot of artwork, costumes, and everything. We shot the film in over 110 days. It was fun.

Q. You and Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval have worked together in Android Kunjappan and other films. How did your rapport help in the cinema-making process?

A. I came to know about Ratheesh ettan (a term to show respect) only during the shooting of Android Kunjappan (2019).

Since then, I liked his work and working style.

I worked with him later as an actor and casting director. He is one of my close friends in the film industry.

Ratheesh is a humorous person. Every character penned by him has a peculiar aspect.

I like to be part of his experiments which is why he gives me his scripts in advance. All that I need to do is follow the script and perform accordingly.

As you can see, all our films offer different experiences to the viewers.

Q. Tell us about your experiences working with filmmakers like Dileesh Pothan, Dileesh Nair, and Syam Pushkaran.

A. All these directors are my seniors in the industry. We often met and discussed cinema. That is how I debuted in Dileesh Pothan’s Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016).

I followed it up with Kumbalangi Nights (directorial debut of Syam Pushkaran) and Mayanadhi (2017, helmed by Dileesh Nair).

However, by the time of Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum,  I gained a good experience in films.

In Kumbalangi Nights, I worked in the casting process, too. It was rare and nice to be part of different stages of cinema.

Q. How do you define your journey in films?

A.  I didn’t have a proper idea of what to do when I entered the Malayalam film industry. All I knew was that I wanted to direct a movie. The rest fell into place as I worked.

I hail from a normal family in Kasargod and never thought of foraying into movies. But today, I played the lead role in a film and am all set to wield the megaphone.

Looking back, I have come a long way. I am delighted with the journey so far.

However, the young generation in my village still doesn’t dare to dream big. Nevertheless, if my journey inspires them and helps them realise their dreams, I will be more than happy.

Q. Tell us about your directorial debut Pennum Porattam.

A. Well, 90 percent of the shoot of Pennum Porattam is over.

It’s a small experimental movie, set against the backdrop of Kollengode village, in Palakkad. It revolves around a dog in the village.

Love Me, starring Ashish and Vaishnavi Chaitanya, is up for release this Saturday. “If You Dare” is the tagline. The film, directed by debutant Arun Bhimavarapu, is a romantic horror thriller. The team hopes that Love Me will end the dry spell of Tollywood. The makers conducted the pre-release event in Hyderabad during which an interesting detail was revealed.

The director confirmed that there will be a sequel to Love Me, titled Kill Me If You Love. The shoot will commence very soon, and Ashish himself will play the protagonist in the sequel. It looks like the team is highly confident in their product, which is why they announced a second part.

Harshith Reddy, Hanshitha, and Naga Mallidi jointly produced Love Me, and the makers spent huge bucks on this flick. Oscar-winning music director MM Keeravani composed the tunes. Legendary P.C. Sreeram cranked the camera. Let’s see how the movie will be received by the audience.
