More and more people participate in extreme sports. Why do people take part in these dangerous sports? What can be done to reduce the danger associated with such activities?

Sample Band 8 Essay

In recent years, extreme sports have become increasingly popular among people of all ages. People are drawn to the thrill and adrenaline rush that comes with participating in these risky activities. From jumping out of airplanes to riding huge waves, these dangerous sports offer a unique set of challenges and opportunities for those willing to try them out.

extreme sports essay ielts

Despite the obvious risk associated with extreme sports, there are still many people who participate in such activities. Some are driven by a need for adventure or a desire to test their physical capabilities. Others simply enjoy the sense of accomplishment they gain after mastering their chosen activity. Many cite the feeling of freedom and joy that accompanies extreme sports as something that cannot be found elsewhere.

To reduce risks associated with extreme sports, it is important for participants to first receive proper training and instruction from certified professionals. This will help ensure that they understand how to stay safe while engaging in such activities. It is also essential for participants to wear appropriate safety gear, such as helmets and protective clothing, when participating in any kind of sport. Finally, extreme athletes should always make sure they are aware of their abilities and limitations before taking part in any kind of dangerous activity, so they don’t overextend themselves or put themselves in danger unnecessarily.

Overall, while extreme sports can be extremely dangerous, they can also be a source of immense joy and satisfaction. Participating in such activities does not necessarily mean that individuals are putting themselves in peril, if all the essential safety precautions are taken. With proper training, equipment, education and awareness of one’s own limitations, anyone can enjoy these kinds of daring pursuits, knowing that the risks are properly managed.

Extreme Sports Like Skiing, Water Rafting Should Be Banned | Band 9 IELTS Essay Sample

by Manjusha Nambiar · April 8, 2019

Extreme sports like skiing, water rafting etc are dangerous. Should these be banned?

Here is a band 9 IELTS essay on this topic. Need help with IELTS writing? Get your IELTS essays, letters and reports corrected by me.

Band 9 IELTS essay sample

According to some people, dangerous sports should be banned because they pose a threat to the lives of people who participate in them. However, others feel that adventurous sport is a part of recreational activities and hence it should not be banned. I agree with this view to a great extent. In my opinion, participating in adventurous sports is an opportunity for people to conquer their fears and discover latent talents. However, people who indulge in such sports should receive proper training and supervision to reduce the risks.

Young people are keen to explore new things and conquer their fears, so they participate in risky sporting events such as skiing, water rafting and bull fighting. They are driven by the adrenaline rush they get to experience while engaging in such activities. However, they are putting their lives at risk. For example, in white water rafting, the inflatable rafts may overturn and the player can fall into the river or even drown. Likewise, in bungee jumping the equipment may malfunction leading to the untimely death of the participant.

Having said that, banning such sports is not the solution. To start with, adventure tourism is a booming industry and makes significant contributions to the economy of many nations. Banning such activities will ultimately prove to be detrimental to them. A better solution is to ensure that such sporting events are performed under expert supervision. Only licensed organizers should be allowed to conduct such activities. In addition, the participants should be made to undergo proper training. If adequate security measures are taken, it is possible to play adventure sports safely.

In conclusion, dangerous sports should not be banned but those who are passionate about such sports should be trained properly to mitigate the fatal injuries and deaths.

Essay 150 – Some sports are extremely dangerous for those who play them

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 150.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some sports are extremely dangerous for those who play them. Why do people participate in such sports? What measures could they take to minimise the risks involved?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

When it comes down to playing sports, many people opt for extreme sports. This essay will expound the “whys” and “wherefores” of this phenomenon, and then come up with the precautions athletes could take so as to reduce the risks associated with such sports.

Several factors contribute to this phenomenon. One of the major reasons why people enjoy such intense and dangerous sports is the adrenalin rush it offers. An adrenalin rush, in common parlance, is a phenomenon of stimulation of the adrenal gland resulting in owing to an activity that creates acute stress on the body. The extreme sports, beyond a doubt, belong to the category of activities that can bring forth stress. Therefore, there is nothing like extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, skydiving, surfing and mountain biking, to get the adrenalin going. In addition to this, some people consider that it enhances their fear management skills and they feel more alive and close to nature. To them, such sports are able to translate their fear into elation.

Extreme sports athletes should take safety measures so as to escape the dangers involved in these sports. First of all, adventure sportspeople are expected to take reasonable precautions for their safety. At times of abrupt fall or thrust, for example, people may temporarily injure their elbows, knees, and other parts of the body. Therefore, athletes should ensure that they wear proper protective gears, including helmet, elbow pads, knees pads, wrist pads, goggles and gloves, and make sure that all equipment is in good working condition and used appropriately. In addition to safety, they should wear proper footwear that provides them with dryness, warmth and ample ankle support as well. Finally, they should also choose a licensed tour company that has high safety and risk management procedure.

In conclusion, adventurous stints at an extreme sport are worth an experience once in a lifetime for many. However, the utmost caution must be exercised before participants opt for any extreme sport.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Danger of Extreme Sports

Extreme sports such as sky diving and skiing are very dangerous and should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Safety First Many people claim that risky sports including skiing and sky diving should be prohibited. I oppose the aforementioned view and my reasons will be explained in the following paragraphs. First and foremost,it goes without saying that these two sport (1) are able to evoke astounding thrills and raise adrenaline. However, incidents occur primarily due to the lack of professional training (2) . Amateurs attempt to learn on their own without being aware of the risks they are exposing themselves to. Furthermore, accidents happen because of bold stunts performed by people searching for adventure. Special tricks demand  help and ideal conditions, otherwise they will convert into imminent failures (3) . In addition,a proper equipment is a necessity when it comes to plunging into such sports. A broken sky set or a rusty fly engine can ultimately trigger terrible repercussions to the people involved. On the top of that (4) ,skiing and sky diving represent a profitable area of investment. Therefore, governments in charge of these dangerous activities can spend in rural regions, thus contributing to the development and beauty of the site. (5) On the flip side, despite of making all required steps to ensure for a safe experience , nature remains a game changer (6) .Poor weather and sudden swifts have a tremendous impact on one’s life (7) .For instance, many wounds have led to disabilities and in less fortunate scenarios to death. Ex formula pilot,Michael, has suffered a head injury while skiing and since then he has been in coma despite countless medical interventions. To draw the conclusion, after weighting both sides of the argument I support the view that such sports should not become extinct irrespective of the public belief (8) .

The commentaries are marked in brackets with number (*). The numbered commentaries are found below. The part in  italics  is taken from the text, the word  underlined  is the suggested correction. Words in (brackets) are the suggested addition to the original phrase or sentence.

  • Sport s — ‘sports’ is normally pluralised in British English.
  • Accidents occur — ‘incident’ is usually a more general term that can refer to both good and bad, planned and unplanned event. ‘Accident’ is something that happened by chance and is definitely something unpleasant. Later on in the text you use the right word. There’s a good article on the matter at espressoenglish.net.
  •   Special tricks require  help and ideal conditions, otherwise they will imminently/inevitably turn into failures —  ‘demand’ sounds too imperative here; ‘turn into’ is more suitable than ‘convert into’   — the latter makes it sound more like a business transaction than a sports mishap. I also opted for adverb ‘imminently’. This way the idea of something turning into failure is easier to see in motion, instead of it being an ‘imminent failure’ from the beginning. This is not a mistake but more a matter of preference.
  • On top of that —  ‘On top of that’ is an idiom, no article is needed here.
  • I couldn’t understand the connection between the last two sentences and the rest of the paragraph. Make sure there’s a clear progression of idea, the text is cohesive and easy to follow.
  • On the flip side, despite ( in spite of ) making all required steps to ensure for a safe experience , nature remains a game changer  — it is either ‘despite’ or ‘in spite of’.
  • ‘Swift’ as a noun means a certain species of bird. You must have meant something different here.
  • To draw a conclusion, after weighting both sides of the argument I support the view that such sports should not become extinct irrespective of  public belief  — public opinion shouldn’t take an article because you mean public opinion in general; ‘to draw a conclusion’ is the normally used form; however, the phrase implies that you infer the conclusion from something that isn’t explicitly stated. In your case you are summing up your own writing, which means that the conclusion should be clear to you. See this article for clarification.

Despite the fact that this text has very nice examples of vocabulary and grammar, it remains fairly inconsistent with collocations and numerous vocabulary inaccuracies ( see #1-3; #6, #7) as well as occasional grammar mistakes. This could negatively affect the overall IELTS Writing score (see criteria of IELTS Writing assessment ).

Make sure you use words and phrases you are confident about, brush up your knowledge of articles , make sure all of your sentences contribute to the general idea of the paragraph they belong to.

About the article

This IELTS Academic Question Appeared on 23 September, 2023 in India.

Question: Some think dangerous extreme sports such as skydiving and rock climbing should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is believed by many that certain action sports should be banned as they can pose a threat to human life. In my view, extreme sports should not be banned but regulated to ensure the safety of individuals.

It is crucial to understand that individuals participate in extreme sports by their own choice and banning them would prevent people from making independent choices. Moreover, restricting these activities can deprive people of the joy that they experience while taking part in sports such as skydiving, rock climbing, trekking, and scuba diving. For instance, it might be a personal goal of an individual to skydive from a certain height and accomplishing it might help them achieve new milestones in their endeavours. In addition to this, participating in these action sports elevates one’s life experiences and allows one to challenge oneself to attain new levels each time.

Furthermore, when individuals participate in such physical activities, it enhances their physical health as well as mental resilience. The commitment towards completing an extreme sport fills one with discipline and determination as one has to go through rigorous training and conditioning to prepare oneself for the challenges to be faced. In addition, taking risks is a crucial component of life but one should also follow proper risk mitigation. For instance, authorities should deploy proper safety measures and be ready for any kind of worst-case scenario.

To encapsulate, by following proper regulatory steps, authorities can help individuals strike a balance between freedom and safety while participating in extreme sports, without having to completely prohibit them.

The tables compare data regarding the temperatures and daylight hours in Mumbai and Moscow, during the same week in May, 2017.

Overall, it can be seen that Mumbai was significantly hotter than Moscow, however, Moscow experienced much longer daylight hours.

Regarding the temperatures of the two cities, Mumbai had consistently high temperatures, ranging between 33-34 o C at its peak, and only dropping to 29 o C at its low each day. In contrast, the temperature in Moscow was considerably lower, with the maximum varying between 8-13 o C, and the minimum ranging from 2-9 O C. Additionally, while Saturday was the hottest day in Mumbai, Sunday was the hottest day in Moscow.

As for the hours of daylight, the sun rose in Mumbai every day at 6.00 am, and set between 7.05pm and 7.15pm. However, Moscow received a lot more daylight hours, with the sun rising between 4.05am and 4.15am each day, and setting at 10pm each of the recorded days. Nowadays, sports is a big business with high earnings for professional sports people and companies involved both financially and other ways. Is this a positive or negative development for sports?

  • Level : Easy
  • Type : Opinion essay
  • Topic : Sports
  • Keyword : Sports, high earning, p sional, financially.

These days, professional athletes can earn a great deal of money as sports have become a lucrative business. Furthermore, this business is supported by many companies in various ways, including sponsorships and so forth. From my perspective, this is more of a positive development.

To begin with, paying a big amount of money to sports people can be considered beneficial to sports. When these people find their career rewarding enough in terms of earnings, they are more likely to have greater motivation to devote hard work and time to their training. As a result, these athletes are able to enhance their performance in competition and gain more medals for themselves or for their own country. In Brazil, sports have become an industry that receives huge investments from companies like Wilkes and Banco. Brazilian footballers are paid millions of dollars a year just to bring victory to their country, explaining why this nation has won so many championships.

It is also advantageous for sports when businesses pour a lot of money and support into the industry. Since HAGL, a prosperous business group in Vietnam, allocated billions of Vietnam Dong to the construction of a sports institute to provide young football players with professional training , the Vietnamese national football team has become much stronger. Being well-trained, they now have a better chance of winning more championships and awards than their predecessors . Other companies in Vietnam also use images of popular sports idols in advertisements on social media for another purpose. Aiming at all walks of life, they inspire people to have a greater passion for sports, potentially increasing the number of talented athletes.

In conclusion, sport can benefit a great deal from becoming a business as it will help to improve the popularity of playing sport and leading a healthy lifestyle , while professional athletes will have more financial incentives to improve their performance.

Some people think that museums’ main function is to educate people, the others suggest that they can also serve for entertainment purposes. What is your opinion?

Museums have been centers of education and research for long. Through the activities of acquiring, conserving, researching and exhibiting a myriad of tangible items like artefacts and specimens, we can confirm that museums are of great educational value. Of late, this notion has been challenged by some people, who think that museums are operated for recreation as well. From my point of view, a museum can serve multi-purposes, although education seems to account for a substantial part.

No one can deny that museums impart knowledge to visitors through various methods. One of them is collecting and displaying objects of historical, scientific or artistic value from a particular site. People working for museums are usually trained to interpret those collected specimens to the general public. Viewing these items allow visitors to acquire knowledge of a specific subject, such as art, history, technology and environment. Another approach that can be taken by a museum is to invite specialists to lecture regularly about various fields, which is instructive as well. An entertainment business, by comparison, hardly serves such educational purposes.

In addition to the way it operates, a museum is distinguished from any other operator in the entertainment industry in various aspects. First and foremost, museums are usually not-for-profit. An admission fee is charged only in some selected museums. It barely targets any specific visitors like an entertainment business usually does. Instead, it is supposed to be open to the general public. Besides, the criteria for selecting displayed items is not based on their commercial values but is per the line of items they mainly concentrate. For instance, a history museum would focus only on those items that are of historical importance, although those items might not have significant market value.

However, to some extent, the remarkable development of museums lately can be attributed to some entertainment purposes to recoup their budget. But at the end, the objective of providing knowledge is far bigger than the entertainment.

As outlined above, there are many benchmarks against which a museum can be distinguished from a recreation provider. They are more of educational value than just being places of amusements.

Museums are an important part of the culture of a community or the location where it is situated. They are also consequential in keeping the memory of our predecessors and their achievements alive in the minds of the present generation. Although many surmise that the primary purpose of museums is to educate, others believe that they are also facilitators of recreation. In my opinion, the intent of visiting a museum has shifted from gathering knowledge to leisure over the past few years. In the following paragraphs, I will elaborate on the topic in detail and justify my views.

It is a well-known fact that museums serve as a centre for rare artefacts and antiques from different eras. Information regarding every aspect of a subject, especially historically significant ones can be found at these exhibitions. Thus, these places are considered ideal for research purposes for several students and scholars. That being said, with the advent of the internet, nearly all kinds of relevant information on a subject matter can be found online, including data that is unavailable even in many major museums. Thereby, touring a museum for educational exploration is slowly going out of fashion.

Moreover, with time, museums themselves have also evolved and adapted to the changing preferences of the people. These days the quality of services like a cafeteria, gift and souvenir shops and the general ambience of a museum is as significant as the exhibits themselves if not more. Presently, the popularity of a museum is not solely dependent on the uniqueness and rarity of the relics showcased; rather, the appearances and the presentation are also influential factors in attracting visitors.

That being said, learning about historical facts, traditions and conventions is still a prime reason for visiting a museum. There are still a considerable amount of people who are driven towards these places more out of curiosity than anything else. However, societal trends are changing with time and museums are gradually shifting from a scholastic to a recreational system of operations.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that the nature of the audience is diverse and there can be several reasons for going to a museum. Nevertheless, it is evident that recently the number of people visiting museums for amusement has increased to a great extent.
