Do you have the brains and passion to become an engineer but worry about the cost of the education? You're not alone. Fortunately, you can offset some of these costs by applying for scholarships that can help you pay for college.

The following list of scholarships will show you that you have nothing to fear. Students of all backgrounds will find that there's an engineering scholarship out there that can help make their education more affordable.

In this article, we'll cover many of the prominent engineering scholarships, as well as others that you might not have heard of before. Read on to see what engineering scholarships you might be eligible for!

A Brief Introduction to Engineering Scholarships

Engineering is one of the most popular majors in the United States. In fact, about 160,742 students earned a degree in an engineering field in 2019, and that number is only expected to grow.

It's not surprising that students are seeking out engineering degrees: not only can a degree in engineering lead you to a high-paying job after graduation, but it can also help place you and the country at the forefront of technological innovation. Because of this, there are many engineering scholarships available, sponsored both by private organizations and the national government.

The scholarships on this list are aimed at graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates . They are also primarily aimed at US citizens or permanent residents, and are open to almost all students studying engineering in accredited programs, with the main restrictions being location and grade level.

We've divided up these engineering scholarships into the following categories:

General Engineering Scholarships

Mechanical engineering scholarships, civil engineering scholarships, aerospace engineering scholarships, nuclear engineering scholarships.

One quick note: there are many other engineering scholarships available that are specifically targeted at underrepresented groups in this field, such as women, minorities, and international students than the few that appear on this list.

We've tried to keep our list as general as possible, but if you're part of one of these groups, be sure to search for additional scholarships you might qualify for.

For the purposes of this article, we're focusing on a list of broader scholarships that are open to a larger proportion of students. As such, this list is not comprehensive . There are hundreds of engineering and STEM scholarships out there! If you still don't see one on this list that seems right for you, don't despair. Try searching online for what you're looking for—there's a good chance it's out there!

Tips for Using This List of the Best Engineering Scholarships

Scholarships are listed in alphabetical order. We've tried to include the pertinent details for each scholarship to make them more searchable. Simply use your keyboard's ctrl + f function, and then type in the search term you're looking for.

Let's say you're planning to major in electrical engineering and want to apply for scholarships in that particular field. If you search for "electrical" using ctrl + f, you'll be able to find what you are looking for much more quickly.

Also, we've selected a mix of scholarships for both high school seniors and current college students. If a scholarship is open to high school students, it'll be marked with an asterisk (*). That way you can tell if you meet the minimum eligibility criteria at a glance!

These scholarships generally require you to be majoring in engineering or a related field, such as information technology , but they do not stipulate a specific field . As long as you're majoring in some sort of engineering, you can apply!

BMW/SAE Engineering Scholarship*

This annual scholarship is provided by BMW. You must be a US resident with a 3.75 GPA or higher and have scores in the 90th percentile or above on the SAT or ACT . You must also be an incoming freshman pursuing an engineering or science degree in an ABET-accredited program. Each year, one winner will earn $1,500. The prize can be renewed for up to three additional years for a total of $6,000.

• Eligibility: High school senior
• Deadline: March 15, 2022

Donald and Barbara Mozley Scholarship*

Up to seven awards of $5,000 per year will be granted , and while students can win this award more than once, you'll have to apply again each year in order to get it. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and college students of all levels pursuing degrees in engineering.

In your application, you must outline participation in a STEM activity in or out of school OR outline involvement as a STEM mentor/volunteer and what was gained from the experience. You must also be able to show financial need through a completed FAFSA form and submit a letter of recommendation.

• Eligibility: High school senior or college student
• Deadline: March 21, 2023

Edward D. Hendrickson/SAE Engineering Scholarship*

One student will be awarded $5,000 every year , and the prize is renewable for one additional year for a total of $10,000 in funding. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a US resident with at least a 3.75 GPA and actively engage in a STEP activity in or outside of school. In addition, you have to be pursuing an engineering or related science degree in an accredited program.

• Deadline: September 15, 2023

Fred M. Young Sr./SAE Engineering Scholarship*

This scholarship awards one student $1,000 per year , which is renewable for up to three years (for a total of $4,000). Applicants must be pursuing an engineering degree at an accredited school and have at least a 3.75 GPA and serve in a leadership role in or outside of school that will benefit them in their future career. 

Maureen L. & Howard N. Blitman, P.E., Scholarship*

Winners of this award receive $5,000 toward their freshman year of college (divided into two $2,500 disbursements: one in the fall and one in the spring). To be eligible, you need to be a member of an underrepresented ethnic minority (African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or Native American) and entering an ABET-accredited engineering program at a four-year university.

Beyond completing the application, students must submit their ACT/SAT test scores, a high school transcript, a resume, and two letters of recommendation (note that 2022 applicants will not be required to submit test scores).

• Eligibility: African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or Native American high school senior

SAE International Undergraduate Scholarship*

This scholarship grants one award per year. The award amount varies from year to year. Applicants must be US residents, be enrolled in an engineering program at an ABET-accredited university, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and show evidence of exemplary leadership or service to school or community. Two recommendation letters are also required.

Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute Engineering/Geology Scholarship

$5,000 will be given to a student who is a legal resident of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, or Wyoming. You must be pursuing a degree in engineering or a mining-related field and have an interest in Western coal as a career path.

• Eligibility: College sophomore or junior
• Deadline: March 1, 2023

SAE/David Hermance Hybrid Technologies Scholarship

This scholarship grants one $2,500 non-renewable award each year and is available to college students who are pursuing an engineering or related degree in an ABET-accredited program. All applicants must be US residents and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

• Eligibility: Incoming college junior at time of applying

SAE/Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies Scholarship*

One $5,000 award is given every year. High school seniors who have a 3.0 GPA or above are eligible to apply. You should be planning to pursue a bachelor's or associate degree in engineering or technology through an accredited program.

Additionally, you must be a student in a Ford Next Generation Learning Community and/or a Powered by Ford STEAM Academy.

SAE Long Term Member Sponsored Scholarship

Several $1,000 scholarships will be given out each year. College students who are engineering majors at an ABET-accredited institution and active SAE members can apply for this award. Award decisions are based purely on how much support you've given to SAE and its programs.

• Eligibility: Incoming college senior at time of application

Steinman Scholarship

The Steinman Scholarship is a $5,000 prize awarded to undergraduates entering their junior year. Applicants must be US citizens and have a high GPA and internship experience.

To apply, students are required to submit a completed application form, a resume of activities and experience, two recommendation letters (more is better), a transcript, and a 500-word essay on the importance of ethics in engineering.

• Eligibility: College sophomore

Tau Beta Pi/SAE Engineering Scholarship*

Seven scholarships of $1,500 will be given to high school seniors entering their first year of college. Eligible applicants will be US residents who have a 3.75 GPA or higher and will be pursuing degrees in engineering or a related science.

TMC/SAE Donald D. Dawson Technical Scholarship*

This scholarship is the joint effort of The Maintenance Council of American Trucking Associations and SAE. One award of $1,500 will be granted every year. Applicants must be US residents with a GPA of at least 3.25 and evidence of some type of hands-on automotive experience or activity in areas such as rebuilding engines, working on cars or trucks, tractor repair, working with drones, robotics, or coding.

UNCF STEM Scholars Program*

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hands out 500 prizes a year to African-American students who plan to major in a STEM field, which includes engineering. Award amounts vary depending on class year:

• Freshmen/Sophomores: $2,500 per academic year
• Juniors/Seniors: $5,000 per academic year
• One additional funded year if you're enrolled in a 5-year program

Additionally, all winners receive academic mentoring and a $5,000 stipend to go toward a STEM-related project or internship.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be African-American and a US citizen, have at least a 3.0 GPA, have pursued a rigorous course of study with many math and science classes, and have demonstrated financial need.

• Eligibility: African-American high school senior
• Deadline: Early April 2023

West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship Program*

This scholarship program is intended to help West Virginia students pursue careers in engineering. The number of awards and award amount vary from year to year, though awards will not exceed $3,000 .

You should have a GPA of at least 3.0 from high school or your first two semesters in college and be enrolled or planning to enroll in an engineering or science program. Winners must agree to work full-time or participate in community service related to engineering in West Virginia for at least one year per number of years they receive the award.

Yanmar/SAE Scholarship

This scholarship grants one award of $1,000 (renewable for one additional year). Eligible students are incoming college seniors or graduate students who are getting an engineering degree and taking courses related to the conservation of energy in transportation, agriculture, construction, and power generation.

The program is particularly interested in students who are researching internal combustion engines. Applicants will be judged on their academic performance, areas of study and research, past awards, and leadership.

• Eligibility: Incoming college senior or graduate student

These next scholarships are specifically for students who are getting a degree in mechanical engineering . Be aware that every American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) scholarship requires that applicants are student members of the organization .

Allen Rhodes Memorial Scholarships

This $1,500 scholarship is for a college student and ASME member who is interested in the oil and gas industry. Applicants will be judged based on academic ability and the potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled at Villanova University.

American Electric Power Scholarship

This scholarship of $4,000 is given to college-level ASME members for study in the junior or senior year. Students will be evaluated on their academic achievements and their potential to make contributions to the field of mechanical engineering. Preference will be given to students studying in the following states:

• West Virginia

Applicants should also have an interest in the field of power engineering.

• Eligibility: College junior or senior
• Deadline: February 16, 2023

ASME Power Division Scholarship

This $3,000 scholarship is for a college student and ASME member who is especially interested in fuels, combustion, or the power industry. Applicants will be judged on financial need, academic ability, and the potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

Dan and Vicky Hancock Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering Excellence*

One prize of $5,500 will be awarded every year. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5 (3.0 for upperclassmen) and be pursuing a mechanical engineering or related science degree.

For the application, you need to include a completed FAFSA form, two letters of recommendation, and demonstrate leadership skills in or outside of school. Note that preference will be given to students attending Kettering University .

Frank & Dorothy Miller Scholarship

Up to two awards of $2,000 each will be given to college-level ASME members who study in the United States. Applicants will be judged based on character, integrity, leadership, academic ability, and the potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

F.W. "Beich" Beichley Scholarship

This $3,000 scholarship goes to a junior or senior college student and ASME member. Students will be judged based on leadership, integrity, character, financial need, academic ability, and the potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

Garland Duncan Scholarship

Up to two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to mechanical engineering college students who demonstrate financial need; other selection criteria includes leadership ability, academic success, and potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering field.

Irma and Robert Bennett Scholarship

Up to two $3,000 prizes are awarded to rising college seniors each year, meaning that applicants will need to apply during their junior year of college. All students must be US citizens and enrolled in a mechanical engineering or related four-year degree program.

• Eligibility: College junior (or fourth-year student going into their fifth year)

John & Elsa Gracik Scholarships

Up to five awards of $5,000 each will be given to college students who are US citizens and pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Applicants will be judged on academic ability, financial need, character, leadership skills, and potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

• Eligibility: College student

John Rice Memorial Scholarship - ASME Metropolitan Section

This $3,000 scholarship is for a college student and ASME member who attends one of the following universities:

• City College of New York (CUNY)
• College of Staten Island (CUNY)
• Columbia University
• Cooper Union
• Manhattan College
• New York City College of Technology (CUNY)
• Polytechnic Institute of New York University (Brooklyn, NY)
• SUNY Maritime College

Applicants will be judged based on academic ability, leadership, integrity, character, and the potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

• Deadline: February 15, 2023

Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship

This $13,000 scholarship is awarded to one mechanical engineering college student. All applicants must be members of ASME and will be judged on their grades, character, leadership, integrity, and potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering profession.

Melvin R. Green Scholarship

This $8,000 scholarship will be given to one mechanical engineering college student. Applicants are evaluated based on their financial need, leadership ability, academic achievement, and potential to contribute to the mechanical engineering field.

Ralph K. Hillquist Honorary SAE Scholarship

One $1,000 award is given out every year by the SAE Noise & Vibration Conference . College juniors who are studying mechanical engineering or an automotive-related engineering discipline can apply for this scholarship. This program looks for students who show interest in areas related to noise and vibration, such as statics, dynamics, vibration, and physics.

• Eligibility: Incoming college senior

Stephen T. Kugle Scholarship

This annual $3,000 scholarship is for ASME members who attend a public college or university in one of the following states:

• Texas (except for the University of Texas at Arlington)

Students need to have at least a 3.0 GPA and must be a US citizen. Strong applicants will be active members of ASME .

Various ASME Scholarships

The following ASME scholarships all give out up to two awards of $3,000 each per year:

• Allen J. Baldwin Scholarship
• Berna Lou Cartwright Scholarship
• Sylvia W. Farny Scholarship
• Agnes Malakate Kezios Scholarship
• Charles B. Scharp Scholarship (only awards one prize a year)

These scholarships are for ASME college students and are meant to help fund their final year of study.

William J. & Marijane E. Adams, Jr. Scholarship

This $3,000 scholarship is granted to one mechanical engineering college student every year. All applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be members of ASME. Additionally, you should be attending a college in California, Hawaii, or Nevada, and have a special interest in product design and development.

• Deadline: February 17, 2022

These scholarships are specifically for students interested in pursuing a career in civil engineering. As above, many of these scholarships require you to be a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) .

B. Charles Tiney Memorial ASCE Student Chapter Scholarship

College students who are enrolled in a civil engineering or related program and who are members of an ASCE Student Chapter can apply for this award, whose amount varies annually . You'll have to submit a completed application form, a personal statement, a detailed annual budget, an official transcript, a resume, and at least two letters of recommendation.

• Deadline: February 10, 2023

Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship, which is usually around $3,000 but varies each year , is available to college students who are enrolled in a civil engineering degree program and interested in bridge design and construction.

You'll have to fill out an application, write a statement detailing your interest in bridge design or construction, and draft an annual budget; you must also submit official transcripts, a resume, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation.

John Lenard Civil Engineering Scholarship

A maximum of two awards of varying amounts will be given to college students who are focusing on water supply or environmental engineering in their studies. Though this scholarship is not renewable, you may apply for and win it more than once. To be eligible, you must be majoring in civil engineering and be a member of ASCE.

You will need to submit an application form; a personal statement that details why you should receive the scholarship, your financial need, and your plans for your education; an essay on how civil engineering can improve the environment; official transcripts; a resume; and at least two letters of recommendation.

Lawrence W. and Francis W. Cox Scholarship

The amount of this award varies annually , and while it's not renewable, you can apply and win the award more than once. All applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate civil engineering program, be a student member of ASCE, and be in good standing.

You will have to submit a completed application form, along with a personal essay about why you want to become a civil engineer and how you have participated in ASCE. Other required forms include a detailed annual budget, official transcripts, a resume, and at least two recommendation letters.

Robert B. B. and Josephine N. Moorman Scholarship

Another scholarship open to college students majoring in civil engineering, this award amount varies from year to year, and is not renewable. One award is granted per year. 

You will need to submit an application form, a 500-word essay on your long-term goals and why you want to become a civil engineer, a detailed annual budget, transcripts, a resume, and two recommendation letters.

Samuel Fletcher Tapman ASCE Student Chapter Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to a maximum of 12 college students pursuing a degree in civil engineering. The award amount varies each year. You must be a member of good standing at your local ASCE Student Chapter.

To apply, you'll have to submit an application form, a personal statement about why you deserve the award and your plans for your education, a brief financial statement about how you'll finance your education should you get the award, an official transcript, a resume, and at least two letters of recommendation.

If you're interested in nuclear engineering, these scholarships are for you! Note that all undergrad American Nuclear Society (ANS) applications must be sponsored by a faculty advisor of an ANS Student Section or Alpha Nu Sigma Chapter.

ANS Incoming Freshman Scholarship*

Four awards of $1,000 are given out every year. This scholarship is specifically for high school seniors who will be enrolling full-time in a STEM program in college with a focus on nuclear science and technology. Consideration criteria includes your academic record, freshman courses you've chosen to take, letters of recommendation, and a 500-word essay.

ANS Undergraduate Scholarships

Each year, ANS awards four $2,000 scholarships to nuclear science or nuclear engineering college students. To be eligible, you must have completed at least two years of a nuclear science or nuclear engineering degree.

Kent W. Hamlin Memorial Scholarship

One $2,000 award is handed out annually. This scholarship program targets students who are on their way to earning an associate degree and who are committed to pursuing a career in the nuclear power industry. Applicants must also be participants in the Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program.

• Eligibility: College student pursuing an associate degree

NEED Scholarship Award for Community College and Trade School

Up to four awards of $2,500 each are given out annually to two-year community college or trade school students who demonstrate greater-than-average financial need and plan to pursue a career in nuclear science or nuclear engineering. Special consideration is given to socioeconomically disadvantaged students.

• Eligibility: Two-year community college or trade school student

Additional ANS Scholarships

The American Nuclear Society offers a variety of other undergraduate scholarships with awards varying from $2,000 to $3,000. In order to apply for these awards, you'll need to fill out the ANS general application, then complete a second application for each specific scholarship. Here are the scholarships available:

21 Scholarships for Engineering Students

Introduction.

In 2017, 191,336 degrees were awarded to students majoring in engineering, including STEM majors.

According to Data USA , the median tuition costs for engineering majors at in-state public colleges is approximately $8,000, while the median tuition cost for these majors at out-of-state private colleges is approximately $42,000 per year.

Regardless of what type of institution you attend to earn your engineering degree, there is no doubt that earning an engineering degree is expensive.

Despite the fact that earning a degree in engineering is likely to lead you to a high-paying job down the line, it can often be difficult to see that far into the future when you are focused on figuring out exactly how you are going to fund your degree. 

So, if you're looking for scholarship opportunities to help fund your engineering degree, you have come to the right place! Below, we have highlighted some great scholarships that are currently being offered for engineering students of all disciplines. 

Scholarships for Engineering Students

Too cool to pay for school scholarship.

Amount:  $1,000

Deadline:  Quarterly

Details:  Our no-essay scholarship is open to high school, college , and graduate students of all years. Undocumented students and international students in the US are also eligible. Students pursuing any area of study (including engineering!) are encouraged to apply.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program

Amount:  up to $30,000

Deadline:  early January

-Open to U.S. citizens at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science and/or engineering programs

-The fellowships are for three year tenures

-Full tuition and fees and a health insurance allowance are included as part of the program

Optiv’s Black Employee Network Scholarship

Amount:  $10,000 per year for 4 years

Deadline: January 8

-Open to graduating high school seniors accepted into STEM degree programs

-Minimum 3.5/4.0 high school GPA

-Must identify as Black and/or African American

-Must be a US citizen

CISE Undergraduate Scholarship

Amount:  $2,000

Deadline:  February 1

-Must be pursuing a degree in industrial engineering

-Minimum 3.4 GPA

SME Education Foundation Scholarships (multiple)

Amount:  up to $40,000 (varies by scholarship)

-Dozens of scholarships, open to high school seniors, college students (at four-year and community colleges ), and graduate school students

-Must be pursuing a career in an engineering or manufacturing-related field

American Society of Naval Engineers Scholarship

Amount:  $3,000 - $4,000

Deadline:  February 15

-Must be pursuing a degree in naval engineering or a related discipline

-Open to college seniors and graduate students

Society of Women Engineers Upperclassmen Scholarships

Amount:  Varies

-Must identify as a female/woman 

-Must be pursuing a bachelor or graduate degree in an ABET-accredited program

- International students are welcome to apply!

Maureen L. & Howard N. Blitman, P.E., Scholarship to Promote Diversity in Engineering

Amount:  $2,500

Deadline:  March 1

-Open to high school seniors from ethnic minorities who have been accepted into an ABET-accredited engineering program at a four-year college or university

Marjorie Roy Rothermel Scholarship

Amount:  $3,000

Deadline:  March 3

- Award for graduate students working towards a Master's degree in engineering 

- Must be enrolled in a full-time mechanical engineering program at the time of application

Elisabeth M. and Winchell M. Parsons Scholarship

-Open to students working toward a Ph.D./doctoral degree in engineering

- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and be enrolled in a full-time mechanical engineering program

Donald and Barbara Mozley Scholarship

Amount:  $5,000

Deadline:  March 15

-Open to all applicants – freshman through senior – pursuing a degree in engineering at an ABET accredited college or university

-GPA requirements: 3.75 for high school applicants and a 3.0 cumulative college GPA for upperclassmen

Ohio Environmental Science and Engineering Scholarships

Deadline:  April 15

- Merit-based, non-renewable, tuition-only scholarships awarded to undergraduate students admitted to Ohio state or private colleges and universities

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to careers in environmental sciences or environmental engineering

-18 awards per year

Marine Studies Scholarships

-Open to college graduate, undergraduate, and senior high school students who have been accepted into full-time marine-related programs (with a focus on marine technology, marine engineering, or marine science)

-Must be a MTS member (costs $25/year)

The MTS Student Scholarship for Two-Year, Technical, Engineering and Community College Students

Deadline: April 17

There is a significant shortage of engineering talent in the United States. As repeated studies have shown, there’s an engineering shortage across the entire field. This shortage is driven by many factors, including the expense of getting the necessary engineering educational requirements, which can drive students into debt . 

Fortunately, there are ways for students to reduce these expenses, including engineering scholarships. Even better news: There are many different engineering scholarships available, including engineering scholarships for different types of engineering fields and students. 

General Engineering Scholarships

Ashrae scholarship.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers offers this scholarship. It awards one-time grants of $3,000 to students who are currently in their freshman year of college. Students must be studying a field that will lead to a career in HVAC at any level. The criteria must meet ASHRAE’s various qualifications, including being an accredited school and hosting an ASHRAE student branch.

Astronaut Scholarship

As the name implies,  this scholarship  is eligible for students who may be interested in pursuing a career in space. There are fifteen scholarships of up to $15,000. Students must be a sophomore or a junior, and they have to be attending school at one of the participating universities within the program. In addition, students must be STEM majors and must have completed “considerable” work outside of the classroom, including lab research or internships.

Women in Engineering Scholarships

Auxiliary legacy scholarship.

This scholarship  is given by the National Society of Professional Engineers and is exclusively available to women. Amounts are up to $5,000 and are open to women entering their junior year at an ABET-accredited college . Students must have a high grade-point average, complete an essay, and be recommended by two professors. 

Science Ambassador Scholarship

This scholarship  is funded by the same group that produces the “Cards Against Humanity” game and is a major one: It covers engineering-related expenses for women for all four years of their undergraduate school. As you can imagine, this engineering scholarship is highly selective and expensive. Students have to make a mini-lecture and upload that video to YouTube. It must be a less than three-minute video. 

Engineering Scholarships for Hispanic Students

Gates millenium scholarship program.

This scholarship  program is funded by the Gates Foundation and offers scholarships of varying amounts to 20,000 students of color interested in pursuing a career in the STEM field. 

HACU Scholarship Program

This scholarship program  is run by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and actually offers numerous different scholarships of varying amounts. Students must at least be college freshmen, meet specific scholarship criteria, and have a demonstrated need for funds. They must also be pursuing a STEM career.

Mechanical Engineering Scholarships

Donald and barbara mozley scholarship.

This scholarship  is for $15,000 and is available to students who want to pursue a mechanical engineering degree and career. Students must provide two letters of recommendation and have a strong academic portfolio. Students may be in any year of their academic career to qualify for this scholarship. 

American Society of Mechanical Engineers

ASME offers  this scholarship  to students who are at least going into their sophomore year and interested in pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. There is one application for various scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $13,000.  

Civil Engineering Scholarships

Lawrence w. & francis w. cox scholarship.

This scholarship  is offered to students who are done with their Freshman year of school and interested in a career in civil engineering. Additionally, students interested in this engineering scholarship must attend an ABET-accredited school and complete an essay that lays out their academic and potential career plans. The amount varies based on available funds.

Y.C. Yang Civil Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship  is available for two students who are interested in civil engineering. It is thus highly competitive. Students must have high GPAs and complete an essay. The scholarship amount will alter every year, based on available funds. 

Computer Engineering Scholarships

This scholarship  is up to $10,000 and is available exclusively to women interested in pursuing a field in computer science or computer engineering. Students must be graduating high school and have at least a 3.0 GPA. They must also be located within the Chicago area.

Davidson Fellow Scholarship

This scholarship  is awarded to high school students who are 18 or younger and interested in computer science. The amounts vary between $5,000 and $50,000, this making this one of the more lucrative engineering scholarships currently available. However, it is not just a scholarship: It’s also a fellowship, so there are more intense academic requirements for this scholarship than for many others. 

Biomedical Engineering Scholarships 

Siebel scholarship program.

This program and scholarship  is offered via Johns Hopkins University and is an engineering scholarship that is exclusively available to students interested in biomedical engineering. It is highly selective and requires excellent academics and a track record of leadership in school. In addition, students must be in graduate school and in the top 10% of their class.

TowerCares Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship  is a scholarship of up to $15,000 for undergraduate students interested in a career in biomedical engineering. Students must live in the mid-Atlantic region of the country and attend an accredited undergraduate school. 

Material Science and Engineering Scholarships 

Acta materialia undergraduate scholarship.

The Acta Materialia organization offers this scholarship. There are two scholarships awarded, each for $5,000, and it is given to undergraduate students who are interested in student material sciences. Students must be a member of Material advantage to qualify for this award. 

Henry DeWitt Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship  is an engineering scholarship available to any student studying material science. The total amount is $5,000. It is eligible only to students pursuing a graduate degree and to students who are members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Electrical Engineering Scholarships 

Aprl foundation scholarship.

This engineering scholarship  is offered by the National Association for Amateur Radio and is up to $2,000 for scholarship expenses. In addition to having an interest in electrical engineering, a prospective applicant must be interested in amateur radio and have completed an amateur radio license class. 

IEEE Scholarship

This engineering scholarship  is for students interested in pursuing a career in electrical engineering or a closely related field. It is for students who will be trying to get their undergraduate degrees. Students must at least have a 3.0 GPA and attend an accredited school. Amounts are $2,000 or $3,000, but the scholarship can be renewed if students continue to meet the necessary eligibility requirements. 

Engineering Scholarships for High School Seniors 

Amazon future engineer.

Amazon offers this scholarship to a graduating high school senior interested in pursuing a career in engineering. Students must be attending an accredited four-year school. Winners will get not only a $10,000 scholarship but an Amazon internship after the completion of their freshman year of college. 

BMW/SAE Scholarship

This scholarship  is available to high school seniors who will be attending college next year. Students must have at least a 3.75 GPA and attend an ABET-accredited school. They must also participate in STEM-related activities outside of school. The amount is $1,500. 

Environmental Engineering Scholarships 

Edison international.

This scholarship  is awarded to high school seniors interested in an array of STEM fields, including environmental engineering. Students must be high school seniors with a 3.0 or higher GPA. They must also live in southern California. The amount is very high: $40,000.

Environmental, Engineering & Science Foundation Scholarship

This  engineering scholarship  is six different scholarships available to graduate students interested in pursuing a career in environmental engineering. There are also specific scholarships available to numerous under-represented minority groups. However, all scholarships are the same: They are designed for students pursuing their Master’s degrees and for $2,500.

Software Engineering Scholarships 

Google lime scholarship.

This  engineering scholarship  is a $10,000 scholarship for American students and $5,000 for Canadian students. Individuals awarded this scholarship are also invited to a Google Lime banquet. It is an option for undergraduate or graduate students studying computer science or computer/software engineering. Students must have a high GPA and a record of student leadership within their field.  

Northrop Grumman Scholarship

Northrop Grumman offers this engineering scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career in software engineering. It is provided in partnership with the Society of Women Engineers and is geared to students interested in an array of engineering careers, including software engineering. Students must already be in undergraduate or graduate school. There are no minimum requirements for GPA, and the scholarship amount varies. Students must identify as female. 

Engineering Scholarships for Undergraduates 

American society for nondestructive testing.

This  engineering scholarship  is for undergraduate students that are already enrolled in school. It provides a one-time, $3,000 grant. Students must be interested in both engineering and non-destructive testing. 

William Carrier Scholarship

This  engineering scholarship  is offered in conjunction with ASHRAE. It is up to $10,000 for undergraduate students interested in a career in a wide array of engineering studies. It is named after William Carrier, who invented the first air conditioning system in 1902. Students must attend a school with an ASHRAE branch on its campus. 

Engineering Graduate Scholarships 

George p. hightower scholarship.

This scholarship  is highly flexible in that it is an engineering scholarship that is offered to undergraduate or graduate-degree students. Individuals interested in this scholarship must have a high GPA and complete an essay on their future career plans. The scholarships are one-time awards of $3,000. 

SME Education Foundation

There are actually dozens of  engineering scholarships  available to graduate students under the SME Education Foundation umbrella. The qualifications for these scholarships vary based on what an individual is interested in and where they are attending school, but students must complete an essay and have a competitive GPA. They also must be interested in an engineering career. 

As you can see, there is no shortage of outstanding engineering scholarships available for many different types of students. By putting in the time and work, you can likely find a scholarship that meets your needs and will allow you to get your engineering degree for less money. 

20 No Essay Scholarships You Should Apply For

With the rising cost of higher education, it’s important to secure as much financial aid for school as possible. You may not realize it, but you probably already qualify for dozens of scholarships.  You may be a competitor for awards because of your strong GPA, academic area of interest, hobbies, or even because you graduated high school in a particular county.

While there are many scholarships that require you to submit a long list of supporting documentation, not all applications are so taxing. The list below offers information on 20 scholarships that do not require you to write a personal essay or statement of academic goals. 

These no essay scholarships save you time and energy and could result in you garnering hundreds or thousands of dollars in free money for school.

Tips When Applying To These Scholarships

Here are a couple of things to consider while compiling your no essay scholarship applications. Bear in mind that even no essay scholarships will require you to submit at least a few important documents. Be sure that you meet all of the submission requirements for each scholarship, as each one will ask for specific information. If you don’t submit all of the required documents, they may toss out your application. 

Secondly, in addition to searching for scholarship opportunities at the local level and students in your county, state, or region, do not overlook scholarships that offer smaller awards. No matter the size of the scholarship, all of the money you receive means taking on less debt through loans or paying out of pocket.

1. Richard J. Seif Technical Sales and Marketing Scholarship

This $3,000 award is reserved for learners pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business or engineering with a concentration in marketing or sales. Applicants should possess a 2.5 or higher GPA and be U.S. or Canadian citizens. This one is closed for the year but will reopen again in early 2024 so mark your calendars!

2. Honeywell Scholarship

Offered by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), this award is for students in a graduate or undergraduate program preparing for a career in computer science , engineering , or engineering technology. Awards range from $1,000-$15,000. Applicants must identify as women and be enrolled in an ABET-accredited program. Applications will be open in December and February and are due in February or May, depending on the applicant’s grade level.

3. Reisher Scholars Program

The Reisher Scholars Program offers both merit- and need-based scholarships for sophomores and transfer students in Colorado. Awards range from $4,000-$11,000, with the average being $7,984. Applicants should be full-time students at one of the seven Reisher partner universities 3.0 or higher GPA. Application due dates vary depending on the student’s institution.

4. Alwin B. Newton Scholarship

The $5,000, one-year Newton Scholarship requires applicants to possess a 3.0 or higher or be in the top 30% of their class. Applications must include three letters of recommendation and documents that demonstrate the student’s financial need. Applications are due on December 1 for awards granted the following fall semester.

5. Welder Training Scholarship

This $2,500 award is reserved for students studying welding engineering. Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a 3.0 or higher GPA and enrolled in a four-year undergraduate welding engineering technology program. Applicants must include two letters of recommendation and be submitted by November 30, 2023. 

6. Tang Scholarship

Established by Edward C. Tang, this scholarship is designed to help Asian and Pacific Islander students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community . Up to four awards are given each year, with each award being up to $15,000. Applicants must have graduated from a high school located in one of the nine Bay Area counties with a 3.0 or higher GPA. This application is closed for the 2023-2024 academic year, but should reopen in early 2024. Applications are due in April.

7. Western Digital Scholarship Program

This award is reserved for any undergraduate student who is a biological dependent of a Western Digital employee. Applicants must be enrolled, or plan on enrolling, in a four-year college or university program as a full-time student. Competitive applicants possess a 3.0 or higher GPA. Awards range from $2,000-$5,000. The application opens in January and is usually due at the beginning of April.

8. Cathay Bank Foundation Scholarship Program

The foundation offers up to 20 scholarships of $1,000 to outstanding high school seniors each year. Applicants must reside in California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, or Washington. The need-based award is for learners who plan on attending a four-year program in one of the states previously listed and possess a 3.0 or higher cumulative high school GPA. Applications are due at the beginning of April each year.

9. James R. Bullock Scholarship

Reserved for students residing in North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia, the Bullock Scholarship is a one-year award for undergraduates in architectural or mechanical engineering worth up to $5,000. Applicants should possess a 3.0 or higher GPA or be in the top 30% of their class. Applications are due by December 1, 2023.

10. Project Grant

Offered by the Connecticut Space Grant Consortium, the Project Grant is worth up to $1,000. The award is designed to offset the cost of materials for students completing their senior capstone projects or undergraduate research projects. Applicants need a 3.0 or higher GPA and must be enrolled at a Consortium Member Institution. Applications are open in January for spring scholarships, and in September for fall scholarships. 

11. Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Prospective recipients must be current high school students in one of the 50 states or Puerto Rico with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Applicants must have plans to attend a degree-granting, accredited college or university in the U.S. Up to 150 scholars are chosen each year for this $20,000 award. Applications will be open from August 1-October 2, 2023 for students who will graduate during the 2023-2024 academic year.

12. ASHRAE General Scholarship

The ASHRAE General Scholarship award is worth $5,000. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students with a 3.0 or higher GPA at an ABET-accredited institution. Applications must include official academic transcripts and three signed letters of recommendation. Applications are due by December 1, 2023.

13. Tennessee HOPE Scholarship

Funded by the proceeds from the Tennessee State Lottery, this award is for new college freshmen enrolling in one of 16 eligible colleges or universities in the state. The award is for $1,500-$2,250 per semester, depending on whether the student is attending a two- or four-year school. Students with a 3.0 or higher GPA planning to pursue a bachelor’s or associate degree are eligible to apply. Standardized test scores may be required. Applications are due by September 1 each year.

14. Children of Veterans Tuition Grant

Applicants must be biological or adopted 16-26-year-old children of veterans living in Michigan. Their veteran parents must have passed away or become disabled as a result of their military service. Applicants should have a 2.25 or higher GPA and be enrolled at least half-time at a participating institution in Michigan. Full-time students can receive up to $2,800 per academic year. The application deadline varies per year.

15. Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program

Applicants must be Florida residents and a U.S. or eligible citizen to apply. Prospective recipients must have graduated from a Florida high school with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Applications must include documentation of at least 75 hours of community service. Competitive ACT or SAT scores are also required. This award is worth up to $212.71 per credit hour. Applications are due by August 31 after high school graduation.

16. The Scott McClean Love Scholarship

This award is for undergraduate learners with a 2.0 or higher GPA who are children of former U.S. Army personnel. Eligible students have graduated high school, currently attending a college or university, and are 24 years old or younger. Awards range from $500-$2,000 per year. Applications open every January and close in April.

17. Robert W. White, Sr. Scholarship

The Robert W. White, Sr. Scholarship is for full-time students who are juniors or seniors in a four-year welding engineering degree program. Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a 3.2 or higher GPA. This need-based scholarship requires proof of financial need and is renewable for up to two years. The $2,500 award may be used for tuition and fees only. Applications are due by March 1 each year. 

18. Pearl Scholarship

The Pearl Scholarship is for students in Oregon who have lived or remain in foster care and want to attend a public college or university in the state . The award is for those interested in studying health sciences. Applicants should be 26 years old or younger and plan to enroll at least half-time in school. The amount awarded varies per year. Applications are open from November - March for the upcoming academic year. 

19. General Mills Internship and Scholarship

This program is open to graduate students enrolled in a food science program who want to take on a paid summer research and development internship. The scholarship portion of the award is worth $4,800 for one academic year. Prospective recipients should have a 3.0 or higher GPA and must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for fall 2022 to be eligible. Applications are due by September 30. 

20. Scholarship America Dream Award

Applicants for the American Dream Award must be 17 years of age or older with at least one year of college completed. Prospective recipients must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an associate or bachelor’s degree program with a 3.0 or higher GPA. These awards are need-based and worth between $5,000-$15,000. The application will reopen February 2024.

Application Requirements: Two letters of recommendation

This scholarship, developed by the Ford Motor Company Foundation, is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders to successfully compete in the 21st-century economy. Applicants must have participated in the Ford NGL Network and/or a Powered by Ford STEAM Academy and plan on pursuing an engineering or related degree in college. 

9. Donald and Barbara Mozley Scholarship

• High school seniors/incoming college freshmen and undergraduates 
• Participation in extracurricular STEM activities 

This generous scholarship was established by the well-known broadcast journalist, Donald Mozley. To win this award, applicants will need to detail the importance of their desired major and the future contributions they hope to make. They will also need to demonstrate participation in STEM activities outside of the classroom through extracurricular activities like clubs, mentorship, and volunteering.

10. West Virginia Engineering, Science, and Technology Scholarship (WV STEM Scholarship)

Amount: Up to $3,000

Deadline: March 1

• U.S. citizen or resident alien 
• Enrolled or accepted in an engineering, science, or technology program that leads to a certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree 
• Agree to work full-time in an engineering, science, or technology field in West Virginia for one year for each year the scholarship was received 

The WV STEM Scholarship provides students money for college provided they commit to working in a STEM field in West Virginia. The expectation is that recipients will work a year for every year they receive funds—if they fail to honor the commitment, the scholarship reverts to a loan. Priority is given to students from the Mountaineer State, however, applicants from across the country are welcome to apply.

The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) provides a variety of scholarships—awarding more than $5 million annually—to underrepresented minority students pursuing degrees in engineering and computer science. The scholarships serve the organization’s mission of increasing the representation of Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic American, and Native/American Indian in the fields of engineering and computer science.

12. Lockheed Martin STEM Scholarship

The STEM Scholarship Program awards 200 of these $10,000 awards—which can be renewed up to three times—annually to students intending to earn a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM—including racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities, and those who identify as LGBTQ—are given additional consideration. 

13. Women at Microsoft Scholarship

14. The Science Ambassador Scholarship

Application Requirements: Three-minute educational video explaining a STEM topic 

Recipients can win a full-tuition scholarship that’s renewable for up to four years in this video contest funded by the game Cards Against Humanity. 15. PG&E NSBE Network Group Scholarship

Keep in mind, however, that many colleges deduct private scholarships from the amount of gift aid they provide, reducing how much "free money" you can get from the school. That would effectively negate the work you did in seeking out and applying for private scholarships. There isn't a singular website that's the best to apply for scholarships. Instead, consider scholarships.com, Fastweb, Bold.org, Peterson's, College Board, Scholly, GoingMerry, Scholarship Owl, and ProFellow.

Do your due diligence when looking to apply for scholarships you find on aggregation websites. Confirm that the scholarship's sponsor is legitimate by looking at reviews of the company, and check its Better Business Bureau grade, if available. 

Most private scholarships won't completely cover the cost of your education. You're better off looking for merit scholarships from individual colleges that cover your costs completely or filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)  to see if you're eligible for a need-based full ride. 

Generally speaking, you shouldn't pay someone to search for scholarships for you, though there are exceptions to every rule. Many scholarship websites are free to use. They only "cost" the time you spend searching on them. 

The timing on when you should start filling out applications for scholarships varies depending on the specific scholarship you're applying for. Some scholarships are even available to high school students, so it's never too early to start your search.

The GPA requirement varies from scholarship to scholarship, but the lowest GPA is usually around 2.0. In general, you'll have a better chance of success with a higher GPA. 

Some of the most common scholarship types include academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, identity-based scholarships, and first-generation student scholarships.

What are the advantages of private scholarships versus scholarships or grants from schools.

Neeta Vallab: 

"Honestly, there are very limited advantages to using private scholarships over grants directly from schools. Unlike private scholarships, most grants from schools do not require a separate application and are renewable for four years. Additionally, many colleges will deduct the value of a private scholarship from any award they give you. This is called 'displacement.' And because this practice is so prevalent, it often leaves students with no net financial benefit, despite the effort they invested in submitting an application."

Jennifer Ledwith:

"Unlike scholarships from schools, private scholarships can be used at multiple universities. Furthermore, unlike grants from schools, private scholarships don't have to follow federal or institutional financial aid methodology. Consequently, students can receive private scholarships without regard to other financial aid awards. Furthermore, some private scholarships send the money directly to the student, allowing greater flexibility in using the funds."

Should you always consider scholarships before loans? Are there any scenarios you should pick a loan?

Christopher Rim: 

"No, you should never pick a loan over a scholarship! You always have to pay back loans. Students should bear in mind that they may have their scholarship rescinded if they don't meet the terms and conditions. They should be absolutely sure to read the terms of their scholarship thoroughly to understand the possible consequences if they fail to meet the set conditions."

Ryan Wangman:

"You'll need to repay the money you borrow from any lender, so it's never a good idea to choose a loan over a scholarship, which is money you don't have to pay back. There aren't any scenarios I can think of where it is better to pick a loan than a scholarship. 

How do you know what scholarships you're qualified for?

Rim : 

"Many websites will allow students to filter through their databases to find scholarships they are eligible for. Others ask students to create a profile and then match them based on demographic information. Once students find the scholarships on databases, they should be sure to cross check eligibility requirements on the sponsoring organization's website."

Vallab : 

"Private scholarships will usually have a qualifications section in their description. Some colleges may publish a scholarship grid showing the GPA and test scores required for certain levels of eligibility. Not all merit scholarship information is published however."

What's the best way to track what scholarships you've applied for and are waiting to hear back from?

"Students should keep a spreadsheet to track their scholarship application status."

"Like Jennifer mentioned, a spreadsheet is usually the best way to track application status. Make sure you note how far along you are in each process, as well as any awards you have received — both private and from the schools you've been accepted to.

Frank Schalow, a University of New Orleans philosophy faculty member, died May 25, 2024.

Frank Schalow, a University of New Orleans philosophy faculty member for nearly three decades and an internationally renowned authority on German philosopher Martin Heidegger, died on May 25 at the age of 68.

Schalow started his career at UNO in 1995 as an adjunct faculty member. In 2001, he was promoted to assistant professor and became a full professor in 2010. He taught classes including Introduction to Philosophy, Social Ethics, Ethics, The Philosophy of Kant and The Philosophy of Heidegger.

Schalow was a prolific author and researcher. He wrote 12 books on Heidegger and was the longtime co-editor of “Heidegger Studies,” an international journal published in four languages. Considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Heidegger was best known for his philosophy of existentialism. Schalow’s other areas of research interest included ethics, medical ethics, phenomenology, and 19th and 20th century German thought.

“Dr. Schalow had the admiration of his students and the respect of his colleagues,” said Robert Stufflebeam, associate professor of philosophy. “He was the embodiment of the philosophy professor stereotype. He was brilliant, but quirky. He always wore a tie, even if it bore no stylistic relation to whatever shirt he was wearing. He always spoke thoughtfully and logically. He was never heard to raise his voice in anger. The philosophy program has suffered a great loss. Professor Schalow was one of a kind. He will be missed.”

In addition to the dozen books he authored on Heidegger, Schalow co-edited three books, wrote 16 chapters, and authored several dozen journal articles, review essays, critical discussions and book reviews, Stufflebeam said.

According to colleagues, Schalow’s commitment to his discipline was matched only by his devotion to the stray cats for which he cared for in his New Orleans neighborhood and his beloved New York Yankees.

Schalow earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver, and both a master’s and doctorate in philosophy from Tulane University.

Column: scholarships through community foundation of the fox river valley changing lives in aurora area.

Both are tall, good-looking, excellent students and even at age 10 play a mean game of basketball.

“My twin boys are the catalyst behind my desire to do more, to continue learning every single day,” said the 42-year-old Edward Hospital nurse and single mom who lives in Sugar Grove.

“When it comes to my motivation, it all goes back to the boys,” LeSure said. “I want to leave a legacy for them.”

As it turns out, one reason LeSure can continue this quest is because of a $1,000 scholarship she recently received from the Walter A. Sperry Endowment Fund.

LeSure, who is working toward a graduate degree as a nurse practitioner at Northern Illinois University, is among 509 local students who recently received scholarships administered through the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley in its 2024 scholarship program.

This nonprofit organization oversees funding from local individuals, families, businesses or clubs that want to establish permanent endowments or temporary funds. Since its founding in 1948, it has awarded nearly $25 million in scholarships, including a record $3 million these latest students will get over four years.

Among those 2024 recipients is Ryan McDonough, who was awarded the $2,000 Michael David McGrath Scholarship that will financially help him his senior year at Aurora University, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis on multimedia production.

In his application essay for the scholarship, the 27-year-old Aurora man talked about his struggles with autism, which began when he was diagnosed at age 2.

Non-verbal and placed in self-contained classrooms early on, McDonough said it was through “hard work and people who believed in me” that he was able to graduate from Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, attend a transition program and receive an associate’s degree from College of DuPage before going on to AU.

“Life has not been easy.” McDonough told me in a Thursday phone interview. “I am very determined and sometimes don’t know when to quit.”

At the same time, “I also know my own limits,” he continued, and am “not afraid to reach out to others if I need help with something out of my skill sets.”

Like LeSure, the scholarship will help with tuition and books. As it will for NIU accounting student Connor Bailey McCormick of North Aurora, a recipient of scholarship funds the past few years from the Danny McCue Memorial/Aurora Firefighters Scholarship Endowment Fund.

McCormick’s grandfather was a member of the Aurora Fire Department and personally knew the McCue family, he wrote in his application essay, adding “I may not have the impact on the world that our first responders have, but I have learned many lessons from them that I value.”

Recipients come from all over Kane, DuPage and Kendall counties, with 55% need-based and 45% based on merit/academic achievements. Among them are Lilly Coats of Geneva, who will be attending Marquette University to study biomedical engineering – and play soccer – with plans to work in cancer research fueled by her dad’s 2019 death from leukemia. She received a scholarship in memory of another Geneva and Marquette graduate, Ben Horonzy, who died in 2008.

Other awardees include EH Hser, a first generation college student from Aurora, who will be attending AU with financial help from the Charles and Josiedell Carnes Endowment; Cassidy Noel Hastings of Naperville, who received the Clemens-Clair Future Educators Scholarship and will be a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University; and Anna Domenique DeVries of South Elgin, who for six years has received the Howard E. Charles Jr. Endowment Scholarship and will be attending Carroll University.

Of course there are far too many recipients – high school and college graduates, as well as trade school students – to name in this column. All have their own unique and compelling stories. And all, no doubt, are appreciative of the generosity of the donors who recognize how special it is to keep alive the memories of loved ones through these scholarships.

McDonough “can’t say enough” about that support. Just as he’s come to appreciate all the help received from family, friends, coworkers, classmates and teachers over the years, the young man also sees this scholarship as recognition of his efforts to overcome a disability he no longer sees as debilitating.

“I don’t think of (autism) as a weakness” but as “a unique strength … one of those everyday challenges we all have” in one way or another, McDonough said. “The scholarship is giving me a big chance. Not only am I appreciative of it, it tells me I feel appreciated by others.

“No matter where I am, I have people who have my back and want me to succeed. It gives me motivation to finish up strong,” said McDonough, who after getting his AU degree next year hopes to begin a career in film editing.

After a dozen years of nursing, LeSure told me she decided to become a nurse practitioner because she noticed how there are so many patients who don’t care for themselves as well as they should in a home setting.

“I want to be able to treat as well as educate them on their chronic conditions,” she said. “If you know better you do better.”

Not only is LeSure working full-time as a nurse while also taking graduate courses and guiding the busy lives of her twins, she recently started her own health care business that she hopes to continue growing long after that master’s degree is in hand.

This work ethic she hopes to pass down to her boys, LeSure insisted, comes from her late grandparents, Dorothy and Charles Richardson, who raised her through childhood and were there for her every step of the way until their deaths.

Who knows, she continued, maybe “someday there will even be a legacy scholarship” through the Community Foundation in their names.

“I know,” LeSure said, “I am making them proud.”

The meme was an image of a head with “I need to get rich” slapped across it. “Freshmen after spending 0.02 seconds on campus,” read the caption, posted in 2023 to the anonymous messaging app Sidechat.

The campus in question was Harvard, where, at a wood-paneled dining hall last year, two juniors explained how to assess a fellow undergraduate’s earning potential. It’s easy, they said, as we ate mussels, beets and sautéed chard: You can tell by who’s getting a bulge bracket internship.

“What?” Benny Goldman, a then-28-year-old economics P.h.D. student and their residential tutor, was confused.

One of the students paused, surprised that he was unfamiliar with the term: A bulge bracket bank, like Goldman Sachs , JPMorgan Chase or Citi. The biggest, most prestigious global investment banks. A B.B., her friend explained. Not to be confused with M.B.B. , which stands for three of the most prestigious management consulting firms: McKinsey, Bain and Boston Consulting Group.

While the main image of elite campuses during this commencement season might be activists in kaffiyehs pitching tents on electric green lawns, most students on campus are focused not on protesting the war in Gaza, but on what will come after graduation.

Despite the popular image of this generation — that of Greta Thunberg and the Parkland activists — as one driven by idealism, GenZ students at these schools appear to be strikingly corporate-minded. Even when they arrive at college wanting something very different, an increasing number of students at elite universities seek the imprimatur of employment by a powerful firm and “making a bag” (slang for a sack of money) as quickly as possible.

Elite universities have always been major feeders into finance and consulting, and students have always wanted to make money. According to the annual American Freshman Survey , the biggest increase in students wanting to become “very well off financially” happened between the 1970s and 1980s, and it’s been creeping up since then.

But in the last five years, faculty and administrators say, the pull of these industries has become supercharged. In an age of astronomical housing costs, high tuition and inequality, students and their parents increasingly see college as a means to a lucrative job, more than a place to explore.

A ‘Herd Mentality’

At Harvard, a graduating senior, who passed on a full scholarship to another school, told me that he felt immense pressure to show his parents that their $400,000 investment in his Harvard education would allow him to get the sort of job where he could make a million dollars a year. Upon graduation, he will join the private equity firm Blackstone, where, he believes, he will learn and achieve more in six years than 30 years in a public-service-oriented organization.

Another student, from Uruguay, who spent his second summer in a row practicing case studies in preparation for management consulting internship interviews, told me that everyone arrived on campus hoping to change the world. But what they learn at Harvard, he said, is that actually doing anything meaningful is too hard. People give up on their dreams, he told me, and decide they might as well make money. Someone else told me it was common at parties to hear their peers say they just want to sell out.

“There’s definitely a herd mentality,” Joshua Parker, a 21-year-old Harvard junior from Oahu, said. “If you’re not doing finance or tech, it can feel like you’re doing something wrong.”

As a freshman, he planned to major in environmental engineering. As a sophomore, he switched to economics, joining five of his six roommates. One of those roommates told me that he hoped to run a hedge fund by the time he was in his 30s. Before that, he wanted to earn a good salary, which he defined as $500,000 a year.

According to a Harvard Crimson survey of Harvard Seniors, the share of 2024 graduates going into finance and consulting is 34 percent. (In 2022 and 2023 it exceeded 40 percent. The official Harvard Institutional Research survey yields lower percentages for those fields than the Crimson survey, because it includes students who aren’t entering the work force.)

These statistics approach the previous highs in 2007, after which the global financial crisis drove the share down to a recent low of 20 percent in 2009, from which it’s been regaining ground since.

Fifteen years ago, fewer students went into tech. Adding in that sector, the share of graduates starting what some students non-disparagingly refer to as “sellout jobs” is more than half. (It was a record-shattering 60 percent in 2022 and nearly 54 percent in 2023.)

“When people say ‘selling out,’ I mean, obviously, there’s some implicit judgment there,” said Aden Barton, a 23-year-old Harvard senior who wrote an opinion column for the student newspaper headlined, “How Harvard Careerism Killed the Classroom.”

“But it really is just almost a descriptive term at this point for people pursuing certain career paths,” he continued. “I’m not trying to denigrate anybody’s career path nor my own.” (He interned at a hedge fund last summer.)

David Halek, director of employer relations at Yale’s Office of Career Strategy, thinks students may use the term “sell out” because of the perceived certainty: “It’s the easy path to follow. It is well defined,” he said.

“It’s hard to conceptualize other things,” said Andy Wang, a social studies concentrator at Harvard who recently graduated.

Some students talk about turning to a different career later on, after they’ve made enough money. “Nowadays, English concentrators often say they’re going into finance or management consulting for a couple of years before writing their novel,” said James Wood, a Harvard professor of the practice of literary criticism.

And a surprising number of students explain their desire for a corporate job by drawing on the ethos of effective altruism : Whether they are conscious of the movement or not, they believe they can have greater impact by maximizing earnings to donate to a cause than working for that cause.

But once students board the prestige escalator and become accustomed to a certain salary, walking away can feel funny. Like, well, walking off an escalator.

Financial Pressures

The change is striking to those who have been in academia for years, and not just at Harvard.

Roger Woolsey, executive director of the career center at Union College, a private liberal arts college in Schenectady, N.Y, said he first noticed a change around 2015, with students who had been in high school during the Great Recession and who therefore prioritized financial security.

“The students saw what their parents went through, and the parents saw what happened to themselves,” he said. “You couple that with college tuition continuing to rise,” he continued, and students started looking for monetary payoffs right after graduation.

Sara Lazenby, an institutional policy analyst for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said that might be why students and their parents were much more focused on professional outcomes than they used to be. “In the past few years,” she said, “I’ve seen a higher level of interest in this first-destination data” — stats on what jobs graduates are getting out of college.

“Twenty years ago, an ‘introduction to investment banking’ event was held at the undergraduate library at Harvard,” said Howard Gardner, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. “Forty students showed up, all men, and when asked to define ‘investment banking,’ none raised their hands.”

Now, according to Goldman Sachs, the bank had six times as many applicants this year for summer internships as it did 10 years ago, and was 20 percent more selective for this summer’s class than it was last year. JPMorgan also saw a record number of undergraduate applications for internships and full-time positions this year.

The director of the Mignone Center for Career Success at Harvard, Manny Contomanolis, also chalked up the change, in part, to financial pressure. “Harvard is more diverse than ever before,” Mr. Contomanolis said, with nearly one in five students eligible for a low-income Pell Grant . Those students, he said, weigh whether to, for instance, “take a job back in my border town community in Texas and make a big impact in a kind of public service sense” or get a job with “a salary that would be life changing for my family.”

However, according to The Harvard Crimson’s senior survey, as Mr. Barton noted in his opinion column, “The aggregate rate of ‘selling out’ is about the same — around 60 percent — for all income brackets.” The main distinction is that students from low-income families are comparatively more likely to go into technology than finance.

In other words, there is something additional at play, which Mr. Barton argues has to do with the nature of prestige. “If you tell me you’re working at Goldman Sachs or McKinsey, that’s amazing , their eyes are going to light up,” Mr. Barton said. “If you tell somebody, ‘Oh, I took this random nonprofit job,’ or even a journalism job, even if you’re going to a huge name, it’s going to be a little bit of a question mark.”

Maibritt Henkel, a 21-year-old junior at Harvard, is an economics major with moral reservations about banking and consulting. Ms. Henkel sometimes worries that others might misread her decision not to go into those industries as evidence that she couldn’t hack it.

“Even if you don’t want to do it for the rest of your life, it’s seen kind of as the golden standard of a smart, hardworking person,” she said.

Some students have also become skeptical about traditional avenues of social change, like government and nonprofits, which have attracted fewer Harvard students since the pandemic, according to the Harvard Office of Institutional Research.

Matine Khalighi, 22, founded a nonprofit to award scholarships to homeless youth when he was in eighth grade. When he began studying economics at Harvard, his nonprofit, EEqual, was granting 50 scholarships a year. But some of the corporations that funded EEqual were contributing to inequality that created homelessness, he said. Philanthropy wasn’t the solution for systemic change, he decided. Instead, he turned to finance, with the idea that the sector could marshal capital quickly for social impact.

Employers encourage this way of thinking. “We often talk about the fact that we work with some of the biggest emitters on the planet because we believe that’s how we actually affect climate change,” said Blair Ciesil, the global leader of talent attraction at McKinsey.

The Recruitment Ratchet

Princeton’s senior survey results are nearly identical to The Crimson’s Senior Survey: about 38 percent of 2023 graduates who were employed took jobs in finance and consulting; adding tech and engineering, the rate is close to 60 percent, compared with 53 percent in 2016, the earliest year for which the data is available.

This isn’t solely an Ivy League phenomenon. Schools slice their data differently, but at many colleges, a large percentage of students pursue these fields. At Amherst , in 2022, 32 percent of employed undergrads went into finance and consulting, and 11 percent went into internet and software, for a total of about 43 percent. Between 2017 and 2019, the University of California, Los Angeles, sent about 21 percent of employed students into engineering and computer science, 9 percent into consulting and nearly 10 percent into finance, for a total of roughly 40 percent

Part of that has to do with recruitment; the most prestigious banks and consulting firms do so only at certain colleges, and they have intensified their presence on those campuses in recent years. Over the last five years or so, “the idea of thinking about your professional path has moved much earlier in the undergraduate experience,” Ms. Ciesil said. She said the banks first began talking to students earlier, and it was the entrance of Big Tech onto the scene, asking for junior summer applications by the end of sophomore year, that accelerated recruitment timelines.

“At first, we tried to fight back by saying, ‘No, no, no, no, no, sophomores aren’t ready, and what does a sophomore know about financial modeling?’” said Mr. Woolsey at Union College. But, he added, schools “don’t want to push back too much, because then you’re going to lose revenue,” since firms often pay to recruit on campus.

The Effective Altruist Influence

The marker that really distinguishes Gen Z is how pessimistic its members are, and how much they feel like life is beyond their control, according to Jean Twenge, a psychologist who analyzed data from national surveys of high school students and first-year college students in her book “Generations.”

Money, of course, helps give people a sense of control. And because of income inequality, “there’s this idea that you either make it or you don’t, so you better make it,” Ms. Twenge said.

Mihir Desai, a professor at Harvard’s business and law schools, wrote a 2017 essay in The Crimson titled “ The Trouble With Optionality ,” arguing that students who habitually pursue the security of prestigious employment foreclose the risk-taking and longer-range thinking necessary for more unusual or idealistic achievements. Mr. Desai believes that’s often because they are responding to the bigger picture, like threats to workers from artificial intelligence, and political and financial upheaval.

In recent years, he’s observed two trends among students pursuing wealth. There’s “the option-buyer,” the student who takes a job in finance or consulting to buy more time or to keep options open. Then there’s what he calls “the lottery ticket buyer,” the students who go all-in on a risky venture, like a start-up or new technology, hoping to make a windfall.

“They know people who bought Bitcoin at $2,000. They know people who bought Tesla at $20,” he said.

Some faculty see the influence of effective altruism among this generation: In the last five years, Roosevelt Montás, a senior lecturer at Columbia University and the former director of its Center for the Core Curriculum, has noticed a new trend when he asks students in his American Political Thought classes to consider their future.

“Almost every discussion, someone will come in and say, ‘Well, I can go and make a lot of money and do more good with that money than I could by doing some kind of charitable or service profession,’” Mr. Montás said. “It’s there constantly — a way of justifying a career that is organized around making money.”

Mr. Desai said all of this logic goes, “‘Make the bag so you can do good in the world, make the bag so you can go into retirement, make the bag so you can then go do what you really want to do.’”

But this “really underestimates how important work is to people’s lives,” he said. “What it gets wrong is, you spend 15 years at the hedge fund, you’re going to be a different person. You don’t just go work and make a lot of money, you go work and you become a different person.”
