9 differences between living in Jeddah vs Riyadh

Both cities Jeddah and Riyadh are beautiful in their own ways, but they are largely different from each other. We have made a comparison of Jeddah vs Riyadh in this article with 9 basic differences.

Food – Jeddah vs Riyadh

Both cities have some of the finest eateries. In Riyadh, they are mostly located on the well-known Tahlia Street, and in Jeddah, they are spread out across the city.

For a long time, there was no AlBaik in Riyadh but this is not the case anymore as AlBaik has opened its several branches in Riyadh as well so it is not a point of comparison between Jeddah vs Riyadh.

Food - Jeddah vs Riyadh

Housing Areas

In Riyadh, you can find a variety of residential compounds, apartments, and villas but in Jeddah, apartments are the most common residences.

Generally, it is believed that housing in Riyadh is a little more expensive than in Jeddah. For example, you can rent a villa in Jeddah for an annual cost of SR 48,000, but in Riyadh, getting a big apartment on rent in this budget is only possible.

Infrastructure – Jeddah vs Riyadh

Riyadh has the best metropolitan infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. The infrastructure network has been based heavily on the western highways, motorways, and road networks. Riyadh is also getting an internal metro very soon.

Jeddah, on the other hand, had been initially ignored, the road network is pretty basic, and they have only a few through highways. So, if you are comparing Jeddah vs Riyadh on the basis of infrastructure, Riyadh clearly leads the table.

Infrastructure - Jeddah vs Riyadh

Shopping Experience

One of the commonalities between the two major cities of Saudi Arabia is that both these cities have larger-than-life malls and other souks where you can go and shop till you drop.

I personally think that the shopping experience in Jeddah vs Riyadh is almost the same as you will find similar brands and shops in both cities. However, you can find warehouse sales of different brands in Riyadh which is not possible in Jeddah.

Activities – Jeddah vs Riyadh

If you are someone who likes to roam around for different activities, Riyadh is a better place to live as they have many fun activities.

People – Jeddah vs Riyadh

If you compare the people of Jeddah to Riyadh, the people of Riyadh are generally a bit more conservative in comparison to the rest of the country. However, they possess great traditions, and you can truly feel the Saudi-ness in the city.

Jeddah, on the other hand, is lesser conservative in comparison. A lot of foreigners and expat communities can be found in the city and the Saudi ness found in the rest of the country is least evident in this city.

Jeddah is the most culturally diverse city in the Kingdom. Generally, the Saudi or Arab region crowd inside the Kingdom will be found in the city of Riyadh and the expatriates, foreigners or any visitors to the kingdom will be found in Jeddah city.

People - Jeddah vs Riyadh

Education and Job Opportunities

Riyadh has the world-famous Princess Nourah University and other numerous opportunities for education and employment for the youth.

In Jeddah there is the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology which is another university of similar standards, providing equal opportunities for education and employment.

A comparison between Jeddah vs Riyadh in terms of education reveals that they are equally equipped with educational institutes, colleges, and universities. However, there are better job opportunities in Riyadh.

Weather – Jeddah vs Riyadh

Riyadh city experiences all the weather in a year. During the winter months, you can actually wear winter wear and dress up according to the weather but during the summer months, the desert heat can be almost lethal.

Jeddah, on the other hand, is a coastal land, and they pretty much experience similar or the same weather all year round. The same types of clothes can be used all year round. Humidity does increase, and it can become extremely sticky during the hotter months.

To summarize, a comparison of Jeddah vs Riyadh reveals that the weather in Riyadh is quite extreme in Summer as well as Winter but this is not the case with the weather in Jeddah.

Is Jeddah or Riyadh Better? Comparing Two Major Cities in Saudi Arabia

Jeddah and Riyadh are two of the largest cities in Saudi Arabia, each with its unique characteristics. The question of which city is better is common among those considering moving to or visiting Saudi Arabia. While there is no definitive answer to this question, there are several factors to consider when comparing the two cities.

Table of Contents

One of the most significant differences between Jeddah and Riyadh is the climate. Jeddah is located on the Red Sea and has a more humid environment, while Riyadh is inland and drier. This difference in climate affects everything from the availability of outdoor activities to the types of food available in each city. Another difference between the two cities is the cost of living. While both cities are relatively expensive compared to others in the region, Jeddah is generally considered more costly than Riyadh. This is due in part to the higher cost of housing in Jeddah.

Geographical Overview

Climate comparison.

Jeddah and Riyadh are two of the largest cities in Saudi Arabia, located in different regions with distinct climates. Jeddah is a coastal city on the Red Sea’s eastern shore, while Riyadh is an inland city in the country’s central region. Because of this, Riyadh has a hot desert climate with sweltering summers and moderate winters, while Jeddah has a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters.

In Jeddah, the average temperature ranges from 27°C (81°F) in January to 35°C (95°F) in August, with high humidity levels throughout the year. In contrast, Riyadh’s average temperature ranges from 14°C (57°F) in January to 42°C (108°F) in July, with low humidity levels and occasional sandstorms.

Proximity to Key Locations

Jeddah and Riyadh are essential cities in Saudi Arabia, with different cultural and economic offerings. Jeddah is often called the “Gateway to Mecca,” as it is the main entry point for pilgrims traveling to the holy city for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. It is also known for its vibrant nightlife, beaches, and historical sites, such as the Al-Balad district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the other hand, Riyadh is the capital and financial hub of Saudi Arabia, with a modern skyline and numerous business opportunities. It is also home to several cultural and historical attractions, such as the Masmak Fortress and the National Museum of Saudi Arabia.

In terms of transportation, both cities have international airports and extensive road networks, with Riyadh having a more advanced public transportation system, including an upcoming metro system. However, Jeddah’s location on the Red Sea coast makes it a significant seaport for both commercial and leisure activities.

Overall, while both Jeddah and Riyadh have unique characteristics and advantages, deciding which city is better depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Living Costs

Housing and rent.

Regarding housing and rent, Jeddah is generally more affordable than Riyadh. According to the search results, the cost of living in Jeddah is around 33% less expensive than in Riyadh. In addition, the calculation using the Cost of Living Plus Rent Index suggests that one would need around 11,882.3 SAR in Jeddah to maintain the same standard of life that one can have with 15,000.0 SAR in Riyadh (assuming one rents in both cities).

However, it is essential to note that the cost of housing and rent can vary depending on the specific location and accommodation type. For example, the cost of rent in the city center of Jeddah can range from around 1,500 SAR to 4,000 SAR per month for a one-bedroom apartment, while the price of rent in the city center of Riyadh can range from around 2,000 SAR to 5,500 SAR per month for a similar apartment.

Food and Daily Expenses

Regarding food and daily expenses, both Jeddah and Riyadh offer a range of options at different price points. Generally, the cost of food and groceries is similar in both cities, with slight variations. For example, according to the search results, the cost of gasoline is slightly higher in Jeddah than in Riyadh, with an average price of 1.3 SAR per liter compared to 1.28 SAR per liter in Riyadh.

Regarding dining out and entertainment, both cities offer a range of options at different price points. Corina goetz.

Riyadh and Jeddah are two major cities in Saudi Arabia with distinct differences in culture, lifestyle, and economy. Both cities have their unique charm and offer a different experience to residents and visitors alike.

Riyadh is the capital city of Saudi Arabia and the political centre of the country. The city has a more conservative culture and is a business hub whilst Jeddah is more relaxed. If you want to learn more about Riyadh please see the additional

Jeddah, is known as the logistic hub of Saudi Arabia. The city is situated on the Red Sea coast and has a more liberal and cosmopolitan culture. It has a thriving art and culture scene, with many museums, galleries, and exhibitions.

One of the most significant differences between the two cities is their architecture. Riyadh has more modern and sleek buildings, while Jeddah is known for its traditional architecture and historic buildings. Jeddah’s old town, Al Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is famous for its narrow alleyways, old houses, and traditional souqs (markets).

One of the top attractions in Jeddah is the Corniche, a long waterfront promenade that stretches for over 30 kilometers. The Corniche is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and you’ll find restaurants, cafes, and parks along the way. The Jeddah Corniche is also home to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as the King Fahd Fountain, which is the tallest fountain in the world.

In 2021 Jeddah hosted the Inaugural Formula 1 event, which is also known as the fastest street circuit on the calendar. After the race, there were several concerts with Justin Bieber playing, amongst others. The concerts had a very similar feel to a concert in Europe just minus the alcohol.

Riyadh on the other hand is the financial hub of Saudi Arabia and has a large number of businesses and international companies. This is only growing in numbers with the drive to have regional HQs of companies in Riyadh which are operating in Saudi Arabia. The city is home to the Saudi Stock Exchange and many of the kingdom’s major banks and financial institutions.

Riyadh also boasts several landmarks such as the Kingdom Centre, which is one of the tallest buildings in Saudi Arabia and has a unique design. It houses the Four Season hotel as well as a shopping mall. If you feel brave enough you can go up to the Sky Bridge and see Riyadh from above.

Going to Saudi Arabia? We have created a great Ebook with everything you need to know before going.

That is not to say that there is no entertainment in Riyadh. Several restaurant chains have moved there and you can find any cuisine from Italian to traditional Saudi restaurants all over the city.

From October until March there is an attraction called Riyadh Boulevard which combines entertainment, food, concerts and so much more for people to do. It has something for everyone from children’s activities to fountains with music. You will even find Riyadh Times Square. You can find more information in our Boulevard World Blog Post.

Another great attraction just outside of Riyadh is the stunning view from the Edge of the World (there are actually two). We highly recommend enjoying the sunset from this breath-taking viewpoint. It is so stunning that we wrote two blog posts about it. One is called The Edge of the World and the other The Edge of the World Plus 2.

Riyadh traffic can become quite congested and heavy during rush hour, so I for one cannot wait until the Metro arrives within the next few months. It will certainly help getting around faster. For now you can also use Uber and an app called Careem . You can find additional helpful apps we wrote, you guessed it, a blog post called The Best Apps for the Gulf Region.

So in conclusion, both cities have their pros and cons, and the choice between them depends on personal preferences and priorities. Riyadh is a more economic city with a strong focus on business, while Jeddah is a more liberal and cosmopolitan city with a thriving art and culture scene.

Expert Info

I was recently offered a job in Saudi Arabia. The company has offices in both Riyadh and Jeddah. Which of these cities is better for an expat to settle in? How do they compare when it comes to public transport, healthcare and schools? Hoping someone can advise.

Hi, though Riyadh and Jeddah share many similarities they also differ a lot when it comes to the overall expat experience. Generally speaking, it seems like Riyadh has more in terms of money and job opportunities. While, Jeddah offers more in terms of lifestyle.

Riyadh is much more conservative and religious, which may lead to more culture shock for expats relocating here. There aren't as many activities that expats can get involved with, and foreign cuisine is also harder to find and is mostly limited to Tahlia street. However, this city's accommodation tends to be cheaper and salaries are higher. Riyadh has distinct seasons. The summers are sweltering, and the winters cold enough to wear winter wear.

On the other hand, Jeddah is the most culturally diverse city in the Kingdom. Though still governed by the same laws and religious rules as the rest of the country, the atmosphere is more relaxed. With its proximity to the ocean, Jeddah has many water-related activities one can participate in. Accommodation may be more expensive than Riyadh, but there is a wider variety of options available to expats. Being a coastal town, the weather here is much more moderate and stays pretty constant throughout the year.

These are just some of the points one could compare between the cities. Choosing the city you relocate to is really going to depend on what is important to you - finances or lifestyle. You can get a more detailed overview of these cities in our city guide pages on Riyadh and Jeddah . Hope this helps!
