20 Ace your Assignments

You want to do well in your course. You have worked out all your schedules. You attend all your classes. You have a place to study that works for you. Now you are staring at that big project that you need to get started on, but you can’t figure out where to begin, and your anxiety is rising. Does this sound familiar? You are not alone – this is a situation facing many students. The feeling of paralysis and being unable to follow through is sometimes called procrastination, but it does not have to take over. Try some of the techniques below.

Consider your Anxiety as Excitement

In your studies you will always be facing new ideas, new challenges, and trying to do what you have never done before. It is perfectly natural to feel uneasy about these new things. Consider that anxiety is a form of excitement (which it is). Think about a challenge that you have faced and remember the how you felt when you were successful. Build on this, take a deep breath, and move forward.

Set Your Goal(s)

The first and most self-motivating action step is to decide what you want from each project. Consider what you will gain from the assignment and how your competence will improve. Where does this assignment fit into the larger picture of what you are aiming for? Imagine a future where you look back on this successful project. By focusing on what you want and need, you direct your energies and self-motivation to get things done for you. Create a SMART Goal for your project.

Break the Project into Chunks

Group the tasks into chunks that fit together. A large project might have ten or more them. You will often start with an outline of steps, then do research into materials, then start to create, and so on. Each chunk should be seen by you as a piece that is small enough to complete successfully.

Analyze the Assignment

Pull out your assignment sheet and start to identify the keywords and items that the Instructor wants. Make a list of them down the left hand side of a document. To the right of each item, list the criteria for successfully achieving it. This creates a checklist where you can check off the elements that you have completed as you progress. You now have a clear idea about what is needed.

Create a Timeline

Order the tasks in a logical sequence and assign times to get them done. You now have a written plan that you can refer to as you go along.

Do One Thing at a Time

Pick the first item and get started. Get excited about doing it. Enjoy the positive sensation of having it done and checked it off your list. If you still feel overwhelmed, go back two steps, break this task into smaller pieces, and do the chunks one at a time. You want to see yourself doing each step and succeeding in getting it done.

Take Regular Breaks

Build break time into your studies. Take 10 minutes off to do something you want to do every hour. After three hours stop for a longer break that might include a snack or a meal. After six hours, put your studies aside until tomorrow. This helps you keep up your positive excitement about the parts that you are doing.

Review Your Progress

At the end of each piece of the project that you complete, sit back and review your plan to see how much you have done. Adjust times as necessary.

Start by reading the assignment instructions carefully. This may seem obvious, but it’s important to make sure you understand what the task is and what your lecturer or professor is looking for. They are there to help you, so you should never feel unsure about going to ask for clarification, or for a little extra direction. 5 Ways to Ace Discussion Board Assignments in an Online Class

Online students who want high marks on discussion boards should contribute early and back up their arguments.

Students who want to impress their online instructor should make sure their posts reference relevant class material, experts say.

There's no hand raising in an online classroom – and no vigorous head nodding when a classmate makes a great point. In a virtual class, there's no chance to approach an instructor after a lecture to ask about the day's discussion. 

If online college students want to have a real conversation about class material, they have one place to do it: the discussion board, a major component of most online courses.

Ideally, discussion boards help online students connect with the course's instructor, their classmates and with the content being taught, Justin Harding, senior director of instructional design and new media at Arizona State University—Tempe , explained in an email.

"Discussion boards are a great way to address all three aspects, especially in encouraging students to engage and learn from each other. With this approach, learners address various levels of thinking skills from understanding information to analysis and synthesizing new information in their communications via discussions," Harding says.

When online discussion boards work as intended, students can actually learn more from them than from other parts of class , instructors say. But getting the most out of a discussion board – and earning the high marks to show for it – isn't always easy for students. 

Below experts share tips for how to ace the discussion board component of online classes.

Reading Directions Is Key

The biggest key to doing well on a discussion board is simply reading the teacher's instructions, says Noam Ebner, who teaches in the online graduate program in negotiation and conflict resolution at the  Creighton University School of Law . "Read the syllabus," he says. "In the syllabus teachers often say straight out, 'This is what we want.'"

Syllabuses typically outline how often to post in the discussion board, what to include in each contribution and the appropriate length of responses to classmates' posts.

"Many of our faculty use rubrics for assignments, including discussion posts, so that students have a clear understanding of how they can meet all components for the assignment," says Cheryl Kohen, director of the Division of Online Studies at Daytona State College in Florida.

Students should also be prepared with the appropriate technology, Harding says. That may mean a webcam or microphone, depending on the technology specifications outlined by the instructor.

Say Something Substantive

While online instructors want to hear student opinions on discussion boards, they want those opinions to be backed up by facts. Citing sources from inside and outside of materials covered in class can cut back on plagiarism and make a student's argument seem more legitimate, experts say.  

Students should also keep in mind that discussion boards are meant to be conversations, where each post builds on the previous comment.  

"Good response posts are response posts that do not only agree or disagree," Ebner says. "When you read another student's post, you have the ability to expand the conversation." To do that, students can reference material or, when appropriate, relate it to their own life experience, he says. 

Don't Procrastinate

"Participate early and not at the deadline," says Brian Redmond, a teaching professor of labor and employment relations at Pennsylvania State University—University Park .

"If everybody participates at the deadline, the quality of the conversation is very, very surface level and doesn't delve anywhere close to where it should be for a thoughtful and informative discussion," he says.

Ask a Question if You're Confused

If a student is stumped on an assignment, help is often only an email away or even available in an online forum.

"There are a variety of resources available for learners depending on the more specific issue they might be encountering with discussion boards ," Harding says.

He cites course community forums as a resource where students can ask for clarity on assignments from the instructor or other students. Other resources include the ASU writing center and IT help desk. Similar resources can be found at colleges across the U.S. with robust online programs.

Review Content for Clarity and Tone

Use textspeak in a discussion post, and your instructor will not be LOL, experts say. Students should write in clear, complete sentences. Swear words, writing in all capital letters and using multiple exclamation points are off limits.  

Students should read over their posts for tone to make sure they don't offend their peers, experts say. And if students are struggling to craft a well-written post, they can always reach out to a tutor or a writing center, Harding says. 

And don't forget about the instructor. Kohen notes that some professors will provide feedback to help students out.

"Many of our faculty are now using videos to engage with online learning, including in a discussion setting. They might create a brief video micro-lecture, which highlights the specific aspects of the assignments and provides more personalized feedback for online learners," Kohen says.

Maybe you’re struggling in your college classes and want to do better, or perhaps you are a few points shy of a perfect A and are looking for ways to ace the class. Expectations can be high for college students to do well, especially if the program they are in is competitive. You can take certain steps to ace your class and ensure you maintain a high grade point average, as graduating with high marks from college can set you up for a career or more schooling in the future.

Behaving Effectively in Class

• Showing up prepared to learn means bringing your textbooks and other assigned reading materials to class as well as paper and pens. If you bring your computer to class, make sure you have the professor’s permission to do so as some professors do not allow computers in class. Try to sit near the front so you can hear exactly what the professor is saying and be visible to the professor.
• You should also review the key concepts and ideas for the class before it begins. This could be a quick review of the class syllabus and the class readings the night before or a review of the class materials a few hours before class. This will help you better understand the professor’s lecture and be more proactive in class. [2] X Research source

• Try to ask open-ended questions and don’t be afraid to ask half-formed questions. The professor will likely be happy enough that you are showing an interest in the material and are willing to try to work through your understanding of the material.
• For example, if the professor is talking about the role of philosophy in American politics, you may say, “I’m not sure if I understand what you mean. Can you give me an example of this?” Or you may say, “Can you expand on what you mean? I don’t think I quite understand.”

• You may ask open-ended questions to get the discussion going in class or respond to a question posed by the professor. You may also challenge another student on their position or state a position that is contrary to the ideas of the rest of the class. Doing this will help to fuel the discussion and engage other students in the class.

• You should have all the necessary note taking materials with you in class, including, paper, pens, highlighters, and/or sticky notes. You should also focus on keywords and concepts when you are taking notes to ensure you capture the most relevant information from the professor’s lecture. You can use shorthand to capture the most information and to make it easier to read through your notes later.

• You should also try not to be distracting in class in other ways, such as clicking and tapping your pen on your desk or fidgeting with your notebook or textbook loudly. You should also refrain from distracting others by talking during class or while the professor is giving their lecture.

Studying Effectively

• 1 Gather information about your upcoming assignments and tests. The best place to start is in the syllabus or other documents provided by your professor. You may often find that some details are not specified. Professors often leave them out for the sake of brevity. If this is the case, do not hesitate to politely ask your professor in class or via email. At the beginning of class, the later work may seem distant. However, the sooner you understand what your future work entails, the sooner you can start efficiently using what you learn in class to boost your grades.

• Be detailed in your study schedule and avoid vague planning. For example, rather than note on your study schedule, “two hours for assignments”, you should note, “two hours for the census assignment due 11/13”. This will ensure you know exactly what assignment you will be working on and the due date for the assignment, allowing you to better manage your time.
• You should also prioritize important assignments and get them done first. If you know the census assignment is due the following week it is assigned, for example, make sure you have time set in your study schedule to do it the week before or the weekend before it is due. You should consider any assignments due for your other classes and factor them in based on priority. This may mean doing an assignment for another class first, based on the earliest due date. Once the assignment is completed, you can move on to the next assignment that is due, even if it is for another class.
• If the assignment requires research, you can ask for assistance in the library. You can also use your school’s writing center, if it has one, to make sure you complete written assignments thoroughly. Don’t hesitate to utilize a tutoring service if you need additional help.

• Start by capturing all your obligations as a college student. This includes academic obligations, such as test dates and assignment due dates, as well as administrative obligations, such as application deadlines and expectations from extracurricular activities. Make a list of these obligations, making sure you cover all of them. This will allow you to have a foundation from which to then control, plan, and execute.
• Control your schedule by blocking out every hour of the day. You should note which hours will be dedicated to working and what exactly you will be working on during these hours. Stick to the schedule and make sure all of your schoolwork is accounted for in the schedule.
• Plan out your studying by focusing on specific assignments. Note specific actions you are going to take, such as “work on the book review due 11/5” or “prep for the mid-term exam on 11/21”.
• Evolve your study tactics by embracing any shifts or changes you need to make to your study habits. Re-evaluate and tweak your study habits as necessary, keeping only tactics that work for you and your brain. If something is not working, try a new tactic. Ask yourself, “What worked when I studied for that exam and did well? What could I do better to get a better grade on the next exam?”

• Having a well planned out study schedule can help you avoid all-nighters. Make sure your study schedule allows you to prepare for an upcoming exam in chunks, focusing on one to two chapters of the assigned textbook at a time or one to two key concepts from the class at a time. You may go back and review the material you studied during the previous study session to ensure it is fresh in your brain before you move on to other chapters or concepts.

• You may want to consider setting up a study group with one to three peers who do well in their classes. You can then schedule weekly meetups with the study group to go over specific chapters and/or concepts. It may also be useful to try to set up study meetups closer to an upcoming exam so you can all prepare for the exam together.
• Another option is to hire a tutor, especially if you are struggling with the course material. You should ask friends or peers in your study group for recommendations on a tutor for the class. Start with bi-weekly tutoring sessions and then increase or decrease the tutoring sessions as your grades improve.

Maintaining a Good Relationship with Your Professor

• You may get better sense of the professor’s expectations by taking a moment to talk to her after class on the first day. Ask her what she looks for in an A+ student and how you can do well in the class. Let her know that you are determined to do well in the class and participate in class discussions. This will ensure she remembers your name in a sea of other students and recognizes you as a potentially high performing student.

• This means checking the class syllabus for her rules and requirements around formatting assignments and completing them. Follow all noted requirements for the assignments, from the type of font specified to font size, margin size, and spacing. If the professor would like a title page for the assignment, make sure you create a title page. You should also always check that you have included your name on every page of the assignment and page numbers, as most professors will appreciate these details.
• You may also want to email the professor if you are unclear about any of the required formatting for any of the assignments, as it is better to ask than to hand in the assignment in an incorrect format that will lead to docked points or marks.

• Set up the meeting during the professor’s office hours if she has them. Email her in advance and note what you would like to discuss in the email. Show up on time for your appointment with the professor and prepared to discuss any issues you may be having in the course.
• If possible, try to have one in-person meeting at the beginning of the semester and one in-person meeting at the end of the semester. This will ensure you have check-ins with the professor during crucial times in the term.
• If you are struggling in the class, do not hesitate to set up an in-person meeting with the professor, as most professors will appreciate students who want to improve low grades. The professor may show leniency towards you or allow you to do bonus assignments to make up any marks you lost out on in the class. This will bring you one step closer to acing the class.

Below, I’d like to outline a simple strategy you can use to ace any exam you might have coming up.

Although the specific strategy is my own, the approach is based on cognitive science. In particular, I’m going to look at five key ideas from cognitive science that are easy to miss, but extremely important if you want to study effectively.

The Strategy to Ace Exams

1. when to study and how much.

The first question to answer is when you should study and how much.

The obvious answer to this question is that you’ll do better the more you study. If you spend hundreds of hours preparing, you’ll do a lot better than if you spend ten, and you’ll do even better than if you do nothing. This is pretty clear.

What’s less clear is exactly how you should allocate your limited studying time.

This brings us to our first cognitive science principle: spacing .

The robust literature on the spacing effect clearly shows that studying time is more efficient if it is spread out over multiple sessions than if it is compressed in one session. More exposures to information, separated in time, will result in better retention than if you cram them together in one burst.

Therefore, your studying schedule should take whatever time you have available and try to be as evenly spread as possible throughout your semester. It’s natural to study a little bit more right before the exam, but you should do this much less than is typical.

The next question is how much to study each piece of information. Jakub Jilek and I recommend that you aim for covering each piece of information (via questions or problems) at least five times , evenly spaced from the time you first encounter them until your eventual testing date. This approach is near-optimal for retaining information with the least amount of effort.

Advice : Keep your study schedule evenly spaced out, with only a slight bump right before the test (if at all). Try to practice each piece of info five times from when you first learn it, until your exam.

2. What to Study and How to Do It

Once you’ve figured out your schedule, it’s now time to look at what you’re actually doing when you study.

This is a place where there’s a vast gulf between what most students think is effective and what actually works best.

Consider one experiment by psychologists Jeffrey Karpicke and Janelle Blunt. [ 1 ] In it, they had students in four groups: single review, repeatedly reviewing the information, free recall of the information (meaning you try to remember as much as you can without looking), and creating a concept map (also called a mind map).

Which do you think best?

Before I answer that, let me tell you what the subjects themselves thought. Those who did a concept mapping and repeated review thought they’d do best, with those doing free recall expecting the worst.

What really happened? The exact opposite. Free recall did much better than the other groups, even though the students themselves expected to score the lowest grades.

This result is just one of many from a broad literature concerning the testing effect . This effect says that testing oneself, so you must retrieve the important information from memory, works better than re-reading notes or creating diagrams while referencing your textbook.

Advice : After your first time learning the material, the majority of subsequent studying should be in the form of retrieval practice—trying to reproduce the information, solve a problem or explain an idea—without looking at the source.

3. What Kinds of Practice to Do

There’s a strict hierarchy of what kinds of study materials will be most useful to you in preparing for your eventual exam:

• The most valuable are mock tests and exams which are intended to be identical in style and form to the test you’re actually going to take.
• Next are problems , given in homework assignments, textbook questions or quizzes, that are given for your class specifically.
• Finally, self-generated questions or writing prompts based on the material.

Problem sets from other classes often differ a lot in the scope and expectations, so I don’t recommend using them if your goal is to study for a particular exam.

The reason for this hierarchy of practice is known as transfer-appropriate processing . This basically means that the more your practice resembles the exam, the more your practice efforts will transfer into actual results.

If you don’t have access to high-quality problem sets (as is often the case in non-technical classes), a good solution is to do a writing prompt. Pick a concept, theme or big idea and then try to explain it succinctly and accurately without opening the book. Then re-read it to see if you got it right.

Advice : Always prioritize higher-quality problem sets. Mock exams are best, followed by in-class problems and then writing prompts from big ideas or concepts discussed.

4. Make Sure You Really Understand

Most academic classes are conceptual. This means that passing or failing inevitably rests on whether you understood some important ideas. Memorization matters, but it’s more often as a means to understanding rather than an end in itself.

This means that deeply understanding the core concepts behind any exam you study for should be a top priority.

Practice problems already help with this, since to solve a problem you usually need to understand it.

However, shallow understandings masquerading as deep ones is very common. Psychologists even have a name for this: the illusion of explanatory depth. [ 2 ] The reason is that while it’s easy to self-check factual knowledge (you either know it or you don’t), understanding proceeds in degrees, so it’s easy to convince yourself you know something deeply you don’t.

As a result, I recommend the Feynman Technique as a tool for deepening your understanding of core concepts covered in the class. You’ll know something best when you can teach it.

Advice : Identify the core concepts and make sure you can explain them without looking at the material. If you really don’t get something, go back and forth between the explanation in the textbook and your own understanding until you do.

5. Beat Anxiety by Simulating the Exam First

Big exams come with big anxiety.

Anxiety is one-two punch for your studying ability. It’s both harder to concentrate and the stress makes it harder to remember things, even if you could.

The solution is to make at least some of your studying sessions a full-blown simulation of the exam. If you have a few mock exams, I would save these for doing a full simulation of the test—same seating posture, materials and, most importantly, the same time constraints.

There’s three benefits to doing full simulations:

• You increase your temporary anxiety while studying, which makes it easier to recall the information due to state-dependent memory effects .
• By exposing yourself to the exam situation you’ll be less anxious when the eventual test comes.
• You’ll actually know what your performance is likely to be on the test!

Advice : Simulate your exam by doing mock exams (or if you lack those, with other problems) under the same time constraints and conditions of the actual exam.

Let's say your class has the following grading plan.

Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.

Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.

First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:

w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%

Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.

gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%

Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:

final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%

This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!

What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?

Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.

2024 Kentucky Derby post draw, post positions, odds for 150th Run for the Roses: Fierceness early favorite

The first triple crown race of the year is nearly here and we now know the post positions for the kentucky derby.

It's almost time for the 150th Kentucky Derby. One of the most famous horse racing events in the world takes place on the first Saturday of May annually. One week before the horses enter the starting gates for the fastest two minutes in sports, the post draw was held to determine each horse's starting position at Churchill Downs. 

The morning-line favorite is Fierceness at 5/2, who will start out of the No. 17 gate. Trainer Todd Pletcher brings another big name to Churchill Downs looking for his third career Kentucky Derby win and first since 2017. Another early favorite is Sierra Leone at 3-1, who is trained by Chad Brown. The native of New York is looking for his first Kentucky Derby win to go along with his pair of victories at the Preakness Stakes. 

The winner of the 150th edition of the Kentucky Derby will look to join the 13 Triple Crown winners in history. The last came in 2018 with Justify as the horse easily swept all three legs of the Triple Crown at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

SEATTLE (AP) — Mitch Haniger hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, two batters after Arizona ace Zac Gallen left because of tightness in his right hamstring, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Diamondbacks 6-1 on Friday night.

Gallen (3-2) walked Josh Rojas to lead off the sixth, then was pulled in the middle of Julio Rodríguez’s subsequent at-bat.

“Just a right hamstring spasm and I think we really dodged a bullet,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “Credit him, it’s hard to pull back in those situations and understand what you body is feeling and call out your catcher. I think he’s hopefully going to be fine.”

Rodríguez went on to single off Scott McGough, and Cal Raleigh walked to load the bases for Haniger, who hammered a 389-foot shot to left-center on a full-count fastball.

“Honestly, just trying to get a ball in the air in the outfield, ” Haniger said. “Trying to hit a sac fly really, but obviously put a good swing on it and hit it hard as you can. 3-2, selling out for a fastball with nowhere to put me.”

Josh Rojas and Mitch Garver also homered for Seattle, and Emerson Hancock (3-2) threw six strong innings. Rojas homered on Gallen’s first pitch of the game, and Garver made it a 2-0 in the second.

Arizona’s Kevin Newman homered in the sixth, one of two hits allowed by Hancock. Trent Thornton and Cody Bolton combined for three scoreless innings in relief.

“Another outstanding starting pitching performance tonight,” manager Scott Servais said. “We are on a roll with our starters, really our whole pitching staff. They’ve just been outstanding here over the past couple of weeks.”

Mariners starters have gone 14 consecutive starts without allowing two or more earned runs, a franchise record.

“It’s special, I think everyone knows that,” Hancock said. “But I think for us, ... we’re always trying to get better. We really are. We’re trying to work, we want to just keep pushing, and each guy that goes out there, I feel like we have confidence he gives the team a good chance to win.”

Gallen allowed three hits and three earned runs.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Diamondbacks: P Paul Sewald (oblique) was set to throw a bullpen Saturday and will most likely make another minor-league rehab appearance before making his return from the Injured List.

Mariners: Bryan Woo (elbow) will make his second rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Tacoma and will likely make one more before returning to the active roster … RHP Matt Brash (elbow) is throwing at 100% and was being examined Friday in Seattle to determine if he’ll go on a rehab assignment soon.

Mariners right-hander George Kirby (2-2, 5.33 ERA) was scheduled to pitch Saturday against Diamondbacks right-hander Slade Cecconi (1-0, 3.00 ERA).
