Water is a great endowment and blessing of God to man. Without water, life in this world is impossible. Water gives life and energy to everything. It is essential for the life and survival of human beings birds, beasts, plants and trees. It is the main source of energy and power. We use it for cooking our food and quenching our thirst. It is used for washing our clothes and bathing our body. It is the main source of irrigating our fields. Without it, we cannot conceive of life on earth.

Unfortunately, this great gift and blessing of God has been wasted and ill-used by the people of Pakistan. We have never paid any attention to preserve and save this great treasure of Nature. There are many areas in Pakistan where people do not get water for drinking purpose. In the interior Sind, and Balochistan, there are many towns and villages where people have to carry water from as far as thirty or forty kilometres away from their homes. The Women, children and old men have to undertake the long journey to carry water for their daily use. This is a very sad spectacle. The sources of getting water are very few and limited. Water is present in the subsoil of the earth. It Is brought to earth by the operation of tube wells and electric motors. The other source of water is the rivers, lakes and streams. Water comes into rivers and streams by the melting of massive and glaciers.

This source of getting water is quite doubtful and uncertain. Sometimes, the summer season begins late and these icebergs and glaciers are not melted in time. Consequently,0 the rivers and lakes become dry and barren. The country falls a victim to the shortage of water.

In 1960, a treaty between Pakistan and India was signed with World Bank meditation. The treaty is known as the “Indian Basin Treaty”. According to it, the control of waters of Ravi, Bias and Sutlag was given to India. It was decided that the Indian Govt. would help Pakistan in the construction of two large dams on the Indus and the Jhelum. But this was never fulfilled. Indian Govt. often stopped the flow of water in our rivers when it liked, out of sheer enmity.

The only way to overcome water crisis is to build dams on the river banks. The earliest dams were built to store water for domestic and agriculture. Hydropower became a major reason to build dams.

The construction of Kalabagh Dam is the need of the time. If it is not built in time, our country is going to face severe starvation and famine. Pollution is the main problem of the so-called most-modern age. There is a natural envelope that protects the air, water, and land of the earth. It is called the biosphere. It has the natural capability to dispose of the human wastes. But for the last fifty or sixty years, human wastes have been so great in amount that the biosphere cannot dispose them of properly. The result is the contamination of the environment or pollution.

Scientists have realized that pollution is a threat to the health of living beings on our planet. The main causes of pollution are the massive, uncontrolled increase in population, industrial expansion and the excessive use of automobiles. All these factors are producing wastes in such huge quantities that the environment stands over-polluted. Natural dispersing and recycling processes cannot always keep pace.

What further worsened the problem was the appearance of synthetic substances. These substances dissolve with extreme slowness. Some of them do not dissolve at all. Plastics, fibers, organic pesticides, such as DDT, industrial chemicals, and their wastes are such substances. This type of garbage and toxic chemicals have polluted the land and have mixed with the surface water and the underground aquatic reserves.

Industrial waste products mainly contain sulfur dioxide and various nitrogen oxides. These airborne industrial wastes and automobile emissions combine with atmospheric moisture can cause acid rain and dirty air. Acid rain is the form of precipitation containing high levels of sulfuric or nitric acids. It contaminates water, damages vegetation, and kills life in water.

Smog is the combination of smoke and fog. It is very common in industrial cities of the East and West. The worldwide use of pesticides has poisoned wildlife.

The environmental pollution of today is the direct offshoot of scientific progress. The use of the scientific method in the industrial field is producing air pollution, water pollution, and noise pollution. No doubt, science has given man the command of huge machinery, but everywhere there are big factories and heavy industrial units emitting lots of poisonous materials in the air. The result is that we do not have fresh air to breathe in.

The waste products of these industries drain into the nearby wells, canals, and rivers, and reach the sea. The pollution is killing wildlife on one hand and on the other causing various diseases among human beings. These diseases have a crippling effect on the suffering humanity. There is no cure for most of them.

No doubt the traffic on road speaks of the progress that man has made because of science, but it causes air pollution as well as noise pollution. Noise pollution is also caused by the big industrial units. Those who work in factories suffer from countless psychological diseases because of the unbearable noise of machines. Scientific progress has damaged our peace of mind.

بلاشبہ سڑک پر گاڑیاں اس ترقی کا منہ بولتا ثبوت ہیں جو انسان نے  سائنس کی بدولت کی ہے لیکن یہ فضائی اور شور کی آلودگی پیدا کر رہی ہیں۔ بڑے صنعتی مراکز بھی شور کی آلودگی پیدا کرتے ہیں۔ کارخانوں میں کام کرنے والے لوگ مشینوں کے ناقابلِ برداشت شور کی وجہ سے بے شمار نفسیاتی بیماریوں کا شکار ہو رہے ہیں۔ سائنسی ترقی نے ہمارا زہنی سکون برباد کر دیا ہے۔

If proper measures are not taken to put an end to the menace of environmental pollution, mankind and other creatures will suffer a great loss. To stay health, we should keep our planet clean.

اگر ماحولیاتی آلودگی کی مصیبت کو ختم کرنے کے اقدامات نہ کیے گئے تو انسانوں اور دوسری مخلوقات کو اس کا خمیازہ بھگتنا پڑے اور بہت نقصان اٹھانا پڑے گا۔ صحت مند رہنے کے لیے ہمیں اپنے سیارہ زمین کو صاف رکھنا ضروری ہے۔

The best way to save humans, other creatures, and nature from the hazards of environmental pollution is to simplify our lifestyle and decrease our dependence on industrial and nuclear outputs. Also, we need to redefine our priorities. We should not risk the lives of future generations for our trivial, temporary luxuries.

    بلاشبہ         ہماری زندگی میں پانی کی اہمیت         ناقابل بحث ہے۔     ہم سب جانتے ہیں کہ ہماری زندگی کا سارا دارومدار پانی پر ہے اور اگر ہمیں پانی کی مناسب فراہمی نہیں ملتی تو ہمیں روزانہ بہت سی پریشانیوں سے گزرنا پڑے گا۔    

    پانی ایک ایسا وسیلہ ہے جسے ہم لفظی طور پر ہر اس چیز میں استعمال کرتے ہیں جو ہم کھاتے یا پیتے ہیں۔     لفظی طور پر ہر کھانے کی تیاری کے لیے پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے، ہماری زندگیوں کے دیگر مختلف شعبوں میں پانی کی اچھی مقدار کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔     یہاں تک کہ ہمارے جسم کو توانائی حاصل کرنے کے لیے ایندھن کے طور پر پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔     تمام جانداروں کو کسی نہ کسی شکل میں پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔     زندگی خود اس سیارے پر موجود ہے کیونکہ زندگی کی دیگر ضروری چیزوں میں پانی کی موجودگی ہے۔    

    پانی کیا ہے؟         پانی خود ہائیڈروجن اور آکسیجن کے مالیکیولز کا مجموعہ ہے۔     پانی بذات خود اس سیال کی شکل سے مراد ہے جو سب سے زیادہ دستیاب اور مطلوب ہے۔     انسانی استعمال کے لیے پینے کے قابل پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے جو کہ پینے اور کھانا پکانے وغیرہ کے لیے ہے۔ اگرچہ زمین کی سطح تقریباً 80 فیصد پانی پر مشتمل ہے، لیکن یہ سارا پانی استعمال کے قابل نہیں ہے۔     لہذا پینے کے پانی کو محفوظ کرنے کی ضرورت پیدا ہوتی ہے۔     پانی زندگی کا جوہر ہے۔     پانی سب سے اہم مادہ ہے جو قدرت نے ہمیں دیا ہے۔    

    ہماری زندگی میں پانی کی اہمیت کی مزید وجوہات درج ذیل ہیں۔    

    ہماری زندگی میں پانی کی اہمیت    

•     تمام جانداروں کو         پینے         کے لیے پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے ۔     خاص طور پر انسانوں اور جانوروں میں، زندگی پانی کے استعمال سے قائم رہتی ہے جو جسم کے تمام خلیوں کے ساتھ ساتھ اعضاء کو ہائیڈریٹ کرتا ہے۔    
•         پودوں کو بڑھنے کے لیے         بھی پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے     ۔     زراعت کا مکمل انحصار پانی کی دستیابی پر ہے۔     اگر علاقے میں بارش کی کافی مقدار نہیں ہے، تو آبپاشی کے لیے مصنوعی ذرائع قائم کرنے ہوں گے۔    
•     تمام جسمانی رطوبتوں کو پانی کی صحیح مقدار سے ترتیب میں رکھا جاتا ہے۔     درحقیقت     جسم میں پانی کی اچھی مقدار سے         اعضاء کا کام بھی کنٹرول ہوتا ہے۔        
•     ہر گھر، ہر ریستوراں اور ہر ہوٹل کو مختلف پکوان پکانے کے لیے تھوڑا سا پانی درکار ہوتا         ہے         کیونکہ جہاں پانی کے استعمال کی ضرورت نہ ہو وہاں بہت کم پکوان دستیاب ہوتے ہیں۔     اگر اصل کھانا پکانے کے لیے نہیں، تو اجزاء کو دھونے کے لیے پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔     اس کے علاوہ پانی آٹا بنانے، ابالنے، بھاپ بنانے اور دیگر چیزوں کے علاوہ گریوی بنانے میں مدد کرتا ہے۔    
•     ہمارے جسم کو صحت مند طرز زندگی کے لیے روزانہ کم از کم 8-10 گلاس پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے، اور اگر ہم چند دنوں تک کافی پانی نہیں پیتے ہیں، تو ہمارے جسم کو         صحت مند طرز زندگی         کے لیے کافی ایندھن نہیں ملے گا ۔    
•     ہر کوئی اپنی اور اپنے اردگرد         کی صفائی         کے لیے پانی کا استعمال کرتا ہے ۔     نہانے کے لیے پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے، جیسا کہ دانت صاف کرنے، برتنوں اور کپڑوں کو صاف کرنے اور صاف کرنے کے لیے۔    
•     آبی ذخائر جیسے ندیاں، جھیلیں وغیرہ کسی خطے کے جغرافیہ کا حصہ ہیں اور اس جگہ کی         قدرتی خوبصورتی         میں اضافہ کرتے ہیں۔     وہ اکثر سیاحوں کے لیے سکوبا ڈائیونگ، کینوئنگ، رافٹنگ وغیرہ جیسی سرگرمیوں کے لیے کشش کا باعث ہوتے ہیں۔

•     تمام         باڈی بلڈرز         پانی کی اصل اہمیت کو جانتے ہیں کیونکہ انہیں اپنے بلکنگ سیزن میں بعض اوقات اچھی خاصی مقدار میں پانی کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے اور ان کے کٹنے کے موسم میں، وہ بالکل بھی پانی استعمال نہیں کرتے۔    
•     پانی کا چکر         اچھے ماحول         کے لیے ضروری ہے ، اور اگر پانی کا چکر اچھی طرح سے کام نہیں کرتا ہے، تو ہمیں رہنے کے لیے اچھا ماحول نہیں مل سکتا۔

اس کے علاوہ، لوگوں کوبجلی کی بندش اور مہنگی قیمتوں کا بھی سامنا کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ جیسے جیسے خوراک اور اشیاء کی فراہمی محدود ہو جاتی ہے، قیمتیں قدرتی طور پر بڑھ جاتی ہیں اوراس سے عام آدمی کے لیے بڑا مسئلہ پیدا ہوتا ہے۔

اس سب کے علاوہ، سیلاب ہمارے ماحول کو بھی متاثر کرتا ہے اور اس سے مٹی کا معیار خراب ہوتا ہے۔ ہم زرخیز زمین سے محروم ہو جاتے ہیں۔ اسی طرح سیلاب نباتات اور حیوانات کوبھی نقصان پہنچاتا ہے۔ لہذا ان سنگین نتائج سے بچنے کے لئے اقدام کرنا ضروری ہیں۔

سیلاب سے بچنے کے طریقے

حکومت اور شہریوں کو مل کر سیلاب سے بچاؤ کے طریقے تیارکرنے چاہئیں۔ سیلاب آنے پر اٹھائے جانے والے اقدامات کے بارے میں مناسب آگاہی پھیلائی جانی چاہیے۔ انتباہی نظام(Warning systems) قائم کیا جانا چاہیے تاکہ لوگوں کو اپنے آپ کو بچانے کے لیے وقت مل سکے۔

اس کے علاوہ، بارش کی وجہ سے ضرورت سے زیادہ پانی کو ذخیرہ کرنے کے لیے ایک موثر نظام ہونا چاہیے۔ سب سے اہم اقدامات میں سے ایک نکاسی آب کے نظام کو مضبوط کرنا ہے۔ اس سے پانی کو جمع ہونے سے روکا جا سکتا ہے۔

دوسری طرف ہمیں ڈیم (Dam) مضبوطی سے بنانے چائیے جس میں سستے مواد کا استعمال نہ ہو۔ سیلاب سے بچنے کے لیے حکومت کوڈیموں (Dams) کی معیاری تعمیر کو یقینی بنانا چاہیے۔

مختصر یہ کہ ہم قدرتی وجوہات جیسے بارش اور پہاڑوں پر برف کے پگھلنے کو نہیں روک سکتے۔ تاہم، ہم انسانی ساختہ وجوہات کو روک سکتے ہیں جیسے ڈیموں کا ٹوٹنا، نکاسی کا ناقص نظام، انتباہی نظام نصب کرنا اور بہت کچھ۔ ہمیں سنگاپور جیسے ممالک سے  سبق حاصل کرنا چاہیے جو سال کے زیادہ تر وقت شدید بارشوں کے باوجود سیلاب کا سامنا نہیں کرتے۔

نتیجہ (Conclusion)

سیلاب ان قدرتی آفات میں سے ایک ہے جو مختلف علاقوں میں بڑی تباہی کا باعث بنتا ہے۔ اب وقت آگیا ہے کہ حکومت پاکستان اس مسئلے کو سنجیدگی سے لے اور اس مسئلے پر قابو پانے کے لیے سخت اقدامات پر عمل کرے۔
