Here are some helpful tips on how you can ensure that your resume not only highlights your accomplishments and skills, but also captures employers’ attention immediately. 1. Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. Your resume should showcase your skills and accomplishments as it relates to the role you are applying for. Even if your employment history is not aligned with the role, it is important to find elements that match the requirements of the position you are applying for. This will show employers that you have the potential to grow within the role, and therefore will be more inclined to move forward with your candidacy. 2. A good self-introduction can do wonders. Before you dive into the technical details of your past roles and education, try to add a short introduction of no more than 2-3 sentences. This is your place to tell employers a little about yourself and don’t be afraid to be creative. A few sentences can give employers a chance to get to know you and your potential contribution to their companies. Also, a self-introduction can be useful if you are applying for a role that is outside your current field - use this section as a means to tell employers why this specific position or field interests you. 3. Remember to use a reverse chronological order when listing your jobs, degrees and/or projects (from new to old). Your resume space is limited to one page (unless you have particularly extensive experience) and employers read it from top to bottom when looking for the latest employment experience at the top. 4. Do not use first person in your writing, such as "I made presentations", or “I managed people". This is incorrect and it makes the resume seem like a story. Since this is an official document, it should speak a professional language. People find it easier to grasp quantitative information, so try to use numbers and percentages when describing your professional experience. For example, instead of saying "budget management", try using "budget management of 10 million dollars per year". Or instead of "employee management", you can say "managing 6 employees". This tip is also useful for entry-level jobs - instead of saying "responsibility for handling customer inquiries", try saying "responsibility for handling about 10,000 customer inquiries a month". 7. Don’t forget to include your soft skills. In your skills section, you should emphasize both your technical and analytical skills, as well your human relations skills. I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy. 

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019. 

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role. 

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards. 

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is? 

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill. 

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version. 

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed. 

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect. 

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

How to Use VisualCV to Make a Resume

Here's how I used VisualCV to make a job-ready resume in minutes and how you can, too:

Step 1: Create an Account

I started by going to the VisualCV homepage and signing up. You can sign up using your Google account, LinkedIn, or email. I signed up with my Google account!

Step 2: Select a Template

Next, VisualCV asked me to choose a template. I had 28 templates to choose from.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself when selecting a template, as each is customizable. You can update the profile picture , fonts, and colors and add or remove sections.

I chose the one that stood out most and hit “Select” to continue!

Step 3: Add Pre-Written Content

From there, VisualCV asked me how I wanted to create my new resume. I had three choices:

• Use an existing resume: Upload and customize the content and design of my current resume.
• Use example content: Begin with a pre-existing sample to kickstart your CV.
• Start from scratch: Begin with a blank canvas and create a new resume from scratch.

I went with the second option: use example content. Choose the option that works best for you!

Step 4: Choose a Resume Example

Next, I had to choose a resume example from the 24 options.

The search bar allowed me to search for an example based on my job title to speed up the process. I could also preview any examples I was curious about by hovering over them and selecting “Preview”!

I found a resume example that suited my occupation most accurately and hit “Select” to continue.

Step 5: Customize Your Resume

Once I selected my resume example, VisualCV took me to the editor, where I could customize my resume how I wanted!

I was impressed with how user-friendly the resume editor was. All my tools were laid out at the top, allowing me to quickly change my resume's layout, font, and colors with just a few clicks. I could also easily add and edit sections such as work experience, education, skills, and references and rearrange them to create a logical and cohesive flow.

The example text gave me a great starting point for filling out my resume. I hovered over my resume's sections to delete, rearrange, and edit the text. As someone who deals with writer's block frequently, my favorite tool was the option to improve the text using AI!

Step 6: Download & Share

On the top right, I toggled on the “Preview Mode” to see how my resume looked without any editing tools. Once I was happy with everything, I could hit “Share” to create a shareable link for social media or select “Download” to download it as a PDF or Word document.

French startup FlexAI exits stealth with $30M to ease access to AI compute

Nvidia, apple, tesla and intel are on ceo brijesh tripathi's résumé.

A French startup has raised a hefty seed investment to “rearchitect compute infrastructure” for developers wanting to build and train AI applications more efficiently.

FlexAI , as the company is called, has been operating in stealth since October 2023, but the Paris-based company is formally launching Wednesday with €28.5 million ($30 million) in funding, while teasing its first product: an on-demand cloud service for AI training.

This is a chunky bit of change for a seed round, which normally means substantial founder pedigree — and that is the case here. FlexAI co-founder and CEO Brijesh Tripathi was previously a senior design engineer at GPU giant and now AI darling Nvidia, before landing in various senior engineering and architecting roles at Apple; Tesla (working directly under Elon Musk); Zoox (before Amazon acquired the autonomous driving startup); and, most recently, Tripathi was VP of Intel’s AI and supercompute platform offshoot, AXG.

FlexAI co-founder and CTO Dali Kilani has an impressive CV, too, serving in various technical roles at companies, including Nvidia and Zynga, while most recently filling the CTO role at French startup Lifen , which develops digital infrastructure for the healthcare industry.

The seed round was led by Alpha Intelligence Capital (AIC), Elaia Partners and Heartcore Capital, with participation from Frst Capital, Motier Ventures, Partech and InstaDeep CEO Karim Beguir.

The compute conundrum

To grasp what Tripathi and Kilani are attempting with FlexAI, it’s first worth understanding what developers and AI practitioners are up against in terms of accessing “compute”; this refers to the processing power, infrastructure and resources needed to carry out computational tasks such as processing data, running algorithms, and executing machine learning models.

“Using any infrastructure in the AI space is complex; it’s not for the faint of heart, and it’s not for the inexperienced,” Tripathi told TechCrunch. “It requires you to know too much about how to build infrastructure before you can use it.”

By contrast, the public cloud ecosystem that has evolved these past couple of decades serves as a fine example of how an industry has emerged from developers’ need to build applications without worrying too much about the back end.

“If you are a small developer and want to write an application, you don’t need to know where it’s being run, or what the back end is — you just need to spin up an EC2 [ Amazon Elastic Compute cloud ] instance and you’re done,” Tripathi said. “You can’t do that with AI compute today.”

In the AI sphere, developers must figure out how many GPUs (graphics processing units) they need to interconnect over what type of network, managed through a software ecosystem that they are entirely responsible for setting up. If a GPU or network fails, or if anything in that chain goes awry, the onus is on the developer to sort it.

“We want to bring AI compute infrastructure to the same level of simplicity that the general purpose cloud has gotten to — after 20 years, yes, but there is no reason why AI compute can’t see the same benefits,” Tripathi said. “We want to get to a point where running AI workloads doesn’t require you to become data center experts.”

With the current iteration of its product going through its paces with a handful of beta customers, FlexAI will launch its first commercial product later this year. It’s basically a cloud service that connects developers to “virtual heterogeneous compute,” meaning that they can run their workloads and deploy AI models across multiple architectures, paying on a usage basis rather than renting GPUs on a dollars-per-hour basis.

GPUs are vital cogs in AI development, serving to train and run large language models (LLMs), for example. Nvidia is one of the preeminent players in the GPU space, and one of the main beneficiaries of the AI revolution sparked by OpenAI and ChatGPT . In the 12 months since OpenAI launched an API for ChatGPT in March 2023 , allowing developers to bake ChatGPT functionality into their own apps, Nvidia’s shares ballooned from around $500 billion to more than $2 trillion .

LLMs are now pouring out of the technology industry , with demand for GPUs skyrocketing in tandem. But GPUs are expensive to run, and renting them for smaller jobs or ad hoc use cases doesn’t always make sense and can be prohibitively expensive; this is why AWS has been dabbling with time-limited rentals for smaller AI projects . But renting is still renting, which is why FlexAI wants to abstract away the underlying complexities and let customers access AI compute on an as-needed basis.

“Multicloud for AI”

FlexAI’s starting point is that most developers don’t really care for the most part whose GPUs or chips they use, whether it’s Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Graphcore or Cerebras. Their main concern is being able to develop their AI and build applications within their budgetary constraints.

This is where FlexAI’s concept of “universal AI compute” comes in, where FlexAI takes the user’s requirements and allocates it to whatever architecture makes sense for that particular job, taking care of all the necessary conversions across the different platforms, whether that’s Intel’s Gaudi infrastructure , AMD’s ROCm  or Nvidia’s CUDA .

“What this means is that the developer is only focused on building, training and using models,” Tripathi said. “We take care of everything underneath. The failures, recovery, reliability, are all managed by us, and you pay for what you use.”

In many ways, FlexAI is setting out to fast-track for AI what has already been happening in the cloud, which means more than replicating the pay-per-usage model: It means the ability to go “multicloud” by leaning on the different benefits of different GPU and chip infrastructures.

FlexAI will channel a customer’s specific workload depending on what their priorities are. If a company has limited budget for training and fine-tuning their AI models, they can set that within the FlexAI platform to get the maximum amount of compute bang for their buck. This might mean going through Intel for cheaper (but slower) compute, but if a developer has a small run that requires the fastest possible output, then it can be channeled through Nvidia instead.

Under the hood, FlexAI is basically an “aggregator of demand,” renting the hardware itself through traditional means and, using its “strong connections” with the folks at Intel and AMD, secures preferential prices that it spreads across its own customer base. This doesn’t necessarily mean side-stepping the kingpin Nvidia, but it possibly does mean that to a large extent — with Intel and AMD fighting for GPU scraps left in Nvidia’s wake — there is a huge incentive for them to play ball with aggregators such as FlexAI.

“If I can make it work for customers and bring tens to hundreds of customers onto their infrastructure, they [Intel and AMD] will be very happy,” Tripathi said.

This sits in contrast to similar GPU cloud players in the space such as the well-funded CoreWeave and Lambda Labs , which are focused squarely on Nvidia hardware.

“I want to get AI compute to the point where the current general purpose cloud computing is,” Tripathi noted. “You can’t do multicloud on AI. You have to select specific hardware, number of GPUs, infrastructure, connectivity, and then maintain it yourself. Today, that’s the only way to actually get AI compute.”

When asked who the exact launch partners are, Tripathi said that he was unable to name all of them due to a lack of “formal commitments” from some of them.

“Intel is a strong partner, they are definitely providing infrastructure, and AMD is a partner that’s providing infrastructure,” he said. “But there is a second layer of partnerships that are happening with Nvidia and a couple of other silicon companies that we are not yet ready to share, but they are all in the mix and MOUs [memorandums of understanding] are being signed right now.”

The Elon effect

Tripathi is more than equipped to deal with the challenges ahead, having worked in some of the world’s largest tech companies.

“I know enough about GPUs; I used to build GPUs,” Tripathi said of his seven-year stint at Nvidia, ending in 2007 when he jumped ship for Apple as it was launching the first iPhone . “At Apple, I became focused on solving real customer problems. I was there when Apple started building their first SoCs [system on chips] for phones.”

Tripathi also spent two years at Tesla from 2016 to 2018 as hardware engineering lead, where he ended up working directly under Elon Musk for his last six months after two people above him abruptly left the company.

“At Tesla, the thing that I learned and I’m taking into my startup is that there are no constraints other than science and physics,” he said. “How things are done today is not how it should be or needs to be done. You should go after what the right thing to do is from first principles, and to do that, remove every black box.”

Tripathi was involved in Tesla’s transition to making its own chips , a move that has since been emulated by GM and Hyundai , among other automakers.

“One of the first things I did at Tesla was to figure out how many microcontrollers there are in a car, and to do that, we literally had to sort through a bunch of those big black boxes with metal shielding and casing around it, to find these really tiny small microcontrollers in there,” Tripathi said. “And we ended up putting that on a table, laid it out and said, ‘Elon, there are 50 microcontrollers in a car. And we pay sometimes 1,000 times margins on them because they are shielded and protected in a big metal casing.’ And he’s like, ‘let’s go make our own.’ And we did that.”

GPUs as collateral

Looking further into the future, FlexAI has aspirations to build out its own infrastructure, too, including data centers. This, Tripathi said, will be funded by debt financing, building on a recent trend that has seen rivals in the space, including CoreWeave and Lambda Labs , use Nvidia chips as collateral to secure loans — rather than giving more equity away.

“Bankers now know how to use GPUs as collaterals,” Tripathi said. “Why give away equity? Until we become a real compute provider, our company’s value is not enough to get us the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to invest in building data centers. If we did only equity, we disappear when the money is gone. But if we actually bank it on GPUs as collateral, they can take the GPUs away and put it in some other data center.”
