Jason Yevgeniy Gastrow (born: January 30, 1991 ( 1991-01-30 ) [age 33] ), better known online as videogamedunkey (or just Dunkey ), is an American YouTuber , video game commentator, reviewer, and comedian. He is known for his League of Legends videos, and has played with several famous League of Legends gamers. He is good friends with PBat (PaperBatVG) , and has had the world record on the famous Super Mario Maker 2 level "Bowser's Big Bean Burrito", although he has gotten the record stolen multiple times by LilKirbs.

Dunkey has played both famous and unknown video games; many of his titles are misleading as to the game he's playing. Dunkey rarely keeps series prominence and prefers distributing his unique brand of comedy over a variety of games. Dunkey has also made one music video called " Donkey Kong December " being released on youtube on December 1, 2021. League of legends is the video game that Dunkey has played the most and made the most videos on.

Dunkey used to primarily create content on the game League of Legends, however more recently Dunkey has become more of a variety channel, now featuring video game and movie reviews, both serious and comedic, on his channel. He has also shown a liking in journalism, making videos that point out flaws in different industries, while commenting on it and also reacts to different topics.

Dunkey has been married [1] to Leahbee since September 21, 2019. She can be easily identified for her high-pitched voice.

Dunkey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents are both Ukrainian.

League of Legends [ ]

Dunkey put down his roots on YouTube primarily as a LoL (League of Legends) content creator, making over 180+ videos of the highly popular game. His last Lol video was made on September 12th 2015 and was titled " I'm Done With League of Legends " and was meant to signify his end with the game after Riot Games (the owners of Lol) banned his account whilst he was trying to make another video, because of 'Toxicity' (as ironic as the situation was).

He made the video to put down the reasons why he was stopping content on the game, as well as apologizing to the previous fans who only knew him for his LoL content, as he was moving on. This change arguably helped his channel in the long run, as he was able to bring new fans from the different areas that he was now able to cover, not being limited to LoL.

Style & Personality [ ]

There are some who classify Dunkey as the ultimate shitposter, as every time he uploads gameplay of a game, he displays every level of "broken" that the game is capable of. He delivers his jokes in such a deadpan and sarcastic tone that anything he says can become a quote very easily. When it comes to reviews, he'll go full force on it, as he is able to be brutally honest or apathetic to the game, while still being in his signature voice tone. The signature tone of Gastrow's voice is a big reason as to how his reviews have gained a bit of notoriety, Another signature of his is the misspelling of his own name at the end of every video.

There have been several running jokes throughout his channel such as:

  • claims that he is using a USB steering wheel when playing
  • claims that he is playing blindfolded
  • claims that his little brother is playing.

videogamedunkey launches an indie game publishing company

Dunkey claims that 11 years of reviewing games on youtube has given him the skills he needs to know which games are going places and which games are going to the trash.

By Ash Parrish , a reporter who has covered the business, culture, and communities of video games for seven years. Previously, she worked at Kotaku.

A passionate voice for quality, originality and fun in indie games” With a teal button underneath saying “Go Bigmode”

videogamedunkey , a popular YouTube video game reviewer with over 7 million subscribers, has decided to start his own indie game publishing company. No, none of these words are in the Bible, but it’s true — Dunkey’s now in the business of publishing games.

In the video, Dunkey said that over 11 years of honest and forthright reviewing has taught him what he needs to know to separate the video game wheat from the weak sauce chaff to bring to the public the very best in indie games. He asserted that through his channel, he put “millions of eyes” on indie darlings like Enter The Gungeon , Celeste , Hollow Knight , and Undertale — games that, without his endorsement, probably would have been just fine, but hey, every little bit helps right?

According to Dunkey, his new company Bigmode , represented by an adorable froggy mascot, will lend his not-to-be-taken-lightly seal of approval on the industry’s next indie hit. In his pitch to potential developers, he said, “I am not looking for creative control, but I do want to be involved. I’m sick of sitting on the sidelines waiting for great games to appear. I want to get in there and help make it happen.”

Dunkey encouraged interested developers at whatever stage in the development process to apply. However, according to the not-at-all-small print, games that implement NFTs or blockchain technology are not allowed. He’s also putting out a call to programmers, artists, and other video game professionals to share their portfolios as a part of a networking initiative to hook developers up with the people they need to succeed.

The video did seem to indicate that Dunkey will continue work on his channel, so don’t expect to see any less of his acerbic reviews any time soon. It’ll be a while before the first Bigmode game is released, but whatever it is, hopefully, it’ll be good.

Reviews LetsPlay / Videogamedunkey

Letsplay what even is dunkey.

Dunkey is the ultimate contrarian in the world of gaming content. Is he an unexpectedly analytical reviewer with unusually thought-provoking commentary on the state of gaming, or is he just another gremlin who builds an audience off of the confusion of his content and satirical click-bait? Who can really say? Does that hurt him as a content reviewer though? Probably.

Dunkey has once said it himself that a critic's power lies in the consistency in their voice, however when that voice is consistently all over the place you just start not taking any video seriously, even the "Dunkview" videos which are supposedly meant to be his more serious reviews.

Now I've actually watched quite a bit of Dunkey, and from my point of view I've come to summarize that what he says about a video game should be taken the opposite way. If he says that Splatoon 3 is a technical improvement over the previous game in every aspect, then what you're meant to think as the viewer is "alright, so this is basically the worst title in the franchise yet."

How can one get the most mileage out of this enigmatic youtuber? Really, just come in for the laughs and take any serious analysis with a grain of salt. Although he's not a very consistent critic what he is good at is being entertaining. His manner of speaking is infectious and if you take everything in as one big, elaborate satire you'll have solid content for the long run.

Hard Drive

Uh oh! You've reached a glitched section of Hard Drive where the news is real!

As Video Game Fans, We Should Know To Ignore The ‘Super Mario Bros Movie’ Reviews

videogamedunkey movie reviews

In a tale as old as time, the Super Mario Bros. Movie released today to raucous applause from the audience and middling reviews from film critics. Critics panned the movie for its overt branding and paper-thin story, while moviegoers loved it because it’s fucking Mario.

It’s a bit of a shame that film critics can’t see why people enjoy the Mario movie, but I never expected people who enjoy watching Tár and The Whale on a Friday night to suddenly pog out of their gourd for a funny video game movie.

Besides, as certified gamers™ we are used to ignoring bad reviews of our favorite products. Remember when IGN rated God Hand , one of the most revolutionary action games in the medium, 3/10 below Party Babyz? Remember when Videogamedunkey dunked on Octopath Traveler because he couldn’t mash A through combat like a Gears of War QTE?

Reviews are inherently colored by the reviewers that make them. Videogamedunkey doesn’t like JRPGs, and IGN doesn’t like video games. So when a bunch of film critics say the Mario movie is mid, we need to remember that the movie isn’t objectively 54%: it’s a 54% for people who never heard of Bowser before the movie.

Honestly, are the critics even that wrong? I don’t enjoy the Mario movie for its breathtaking visual effects and riveting storyline; I enjoy it because I recognize Mario from famous games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 . Do we really need people to acknowledge the Mario movie as a triumph in the medium to enjoy it?

Expecting movie critics to give a 100% to the Super Mario Bros. movie is like expecting Tom Colicchio to give a 100% to a Taco Bell Mexican Pizza. I love that abomination of a food product, but I don’t expect fine dining experts to tell me this sewer slop sandwich is a genius combination of flavors. I eat Mexican Pizza because I like it (and I am poor), and that’s enough for me.

On the bright side, we’ve got some absolute gems of quotes from these film reviews. Variety describes Bowser as “fusion of Lionel Barrymore, the Wayland Flowers puppet Madame, and, a T. Rex plushie made for toddlers,” just in case your geriatric grandpa needed some context before taking the kids out. Telegraph inexplicably describes Princess Peach as “disturbingly botoxed,” I guess since imaginary CGI characters can’t have skin that smooth. Datebook accuses the movie of “feeling like they’re standing to the side and watching someone else play a video game.” I have bad news for you, pal: people donated more money last night to a French-Canadian subhuman speedrunning Minecraft than either of us make in a year.

Bobcat Moretti review – heartfelt boxing underdog tale goes down the signpost route

Despite evident passion from the film-makers, this personal transformation through sporting achievement story borders on parody

T raditionally, genre labels gave a broad sense of what kind of experience you might be in for, whether horror, comedy or action. In the streaming era, things are much more specific, with platforms such as Netflix offering ever more niche microgenres: “Cynical Comedies Featuring a Strong Female Lead” for example, or “Classic Feelgood Opposites-Attract Movies”. Bobcat Moretti feels tailor-made for this kind of categorisation. Here we have an “Inspirational Personal Transformation Following Tragic Life Event Sports Movie”, in which a man with multiple sclerosis takes up boxing as part of an effort to turn his life around after a horrific family tragedy.

The passion and commitment of the film-makers are evident. Starring as the eponymous Bobcat, Tim Realbuto also co-wrote the script (with director Rob Margolies) and lost 70kg (11st) during the course of making the film. A lot of work has evidently also gone into securing the rest of the cast, with Vivica A Fox (Independence Day, Kill Bill) representing the biggest coup for an indie production of this nature and budget. They’ve also bagged a very brief cameo from the late Coolio, though his screen time is minimal.

As is unfortunately sometimes the case, hard work and passion don’t always translate into works of genius. The film is uneven, with some moments that work perfectly well (shout out to actor-slash-stuntman Jay Hieron, who gives a credibly nasty performance as an abusive boyfriend) sitting alongside scenes that borrow so extensively from boxing movie cliches that they almost feel like parody, however heartfelt the intention. Lines such as “All right kid, I’m gonna take a chance on you”, suggest either a deliberate attempt to create a sort of ultimate underdog boxing movie tribute collaged together from earlier films, or simply a lack of familiarity with the genre. It’s as if the film doesn’t quite trust its original moments to stand alone, and instead feels the need to signpost everything.

'la chimera' is marvelous — right up to its most magical ending.

Carol Duarte and Josh O'Connor in La Chimera . Neon hide caption

Carol Duarte and Josh O'Connor in La Chimera .

The wonderful 42-year-old filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher practices a kind of cinema that I've come to think of as "Italian magical neorealism." She gives us portraits of hard-scrabble lives in poor rural communities, but they're graced by a whimsical, almost fable-like sense of enchantment.

Rohrwacher's 2014 film, The Wonders , was a lyrical drama about a family of Tuscan beekeepers. She followed that in 2018 with Happy as Lazzaro , about a group of sharecroppers on a tobacco farm whose story moves from picaresque comedy to aching tragedy.

'The Wonders' Of Family And Change

'The Wonders' Of Family And Change

Her marvelous new movie, La Chimera , follows in much the same vein, with one key difference. While Rohrwacher has generally worked with non-professional Italian actors, this time she's cast the English actor Josh O'Connor , best known for his Emmy-winning performance as a young Prince Charles on The Crown .

But O'Connor's character here doesn't give off even a whiff of royalty, even if his name is Arthur. When we first meet him, he's asleep on a train bound for his old stomping grounds in Tuscany. He's just been released from prison after serving some time for the crime of grave robbing.

Arthur has a mysterious archeological talent: Wielding a divining rod, he can detect the presence of buried artifacts, many of which date back to the Etruscan civilization more than 2,000 years ago. Arthur works with a group of tombaroli , or tomb raiders, who rely on him to figure out where to dig.

Upon his return, many of those old friends welcome him back with a parade — one of several moments in which Rohrwacher briefly channels the vibrant human chaos of a Fellini film. Arthur is a little reluctant to rejoin his old gang, since they let him take the rap after their last job. But he doesn't seem to have anything else to do, or anywhere else to go. He may be an outsider — his Italian throughout is decent but far from perfect — but it's the only place in the world that feels remotely like home. And O'Connor plays him with such a deep sense of melancholy that it feels almost special when his handsome, careworn face breaks into a warm smile.

It's not immediately clear what Arthur wants; unlike his cohorts, he doesn't seem all that interested in making money off their spoils. The answer turns out to lie in his dreams, which are haunted by a beautiful young woman named Beniamina — the love of his life, whom he's lost under unclear circumstances.

And so Arthur's determination to go underground becomes a metaphor for his longing for an irretrievable past: Beniamina is the Eurydice to his Orpheus, and he wants her back desperately.

Arthur is still close to Beniamina's mother, Flora, played with a wondrous mix of warmth and imperiousness by the great Isabella Rossellini. Her presence here made me think of her filmmaker father, the neorealist titan Roberto Rossellini — a fitting association for a movie about how the past is forever seeping into the present.

One of the pleasures of Rohrwacher's filmmaking is the way she subtly blurs our sense of time. La Chimera is set in the 1980s, but it could be taking place 20 years earlier, or 20 years later. Rohrwacher and her brilliant cinematographer, Hélène Louvart, shot the movie on a mix of film stocks and sometimes tweak the image in ways that evoke the cinematic antiquities of the silent era. As sorrowful as Arthur's journey is, there's a playfulness to Rohrwacher's sensibility that keeps pulling you in, inviting you to get lost in the movie's mysteries.

One of the story's most significant characters is Italia, played by the Brazilian actor Carol Duarte, who works in Flora's household. Italia is a bit of an odd duck with a beguiling bluntness about her, and she might be just the one to pull Arthur out of his slump and get him to stop living in the past.

I won't give away what happens, except to say that La Chimera builds to not one but two thrilling scenes of underground exploration, in which Arthur must finally figure out his life's purpose — not by using a divining rod, but by following his heart. And it leads to the most magical movie ending I've seen in some time, and also the most real.

Now streaming on:

The trailer for “Abigail” tells you almost everything you need to know about the movie, a wacky high-concept horror thriller about a group of kidnappers who bite off more than they can chew when they unwittingly abduct a child-sized vampire ballerina. The vamp, played with some relish by Alisha Weir , only really comes alive when she’s leering at or stalking her prey. Genre fans will also spot some familiar faces among the movie’s ensemble cast, all of whom do their best with this tic-y, schtick-y material. They curse (enough to seem like they’re overcompensating for some things); they run (around each other, mostly); they get picked off one by one.

You already know what you’re in for if you’ve come to “Abigail” to watch a body count caper featuring plummy character actor performances from That Guys like Kevin Durand and Dan Stevens . Most of their co-stars keep up in less attractive roles, including Melissa Barrera ’s thinly drawn anti-heroine team leader. There’s also plenty of viscous-looking blood splatter and some modestly good-looking vampire makeup—the fangs, in particular. Some action scenes are well-choreographed, but generally over-edited and shot just ahead of whatever’s moving on-screen. The rest of this 90-minute genre exercise is unfailingly conventional, though that’s also a big part of its ostensible appeal.

I can’t really get or stay mad at “Abigail” for essentially delivering what its marketing promises. Sure, the movie’s creators, led by co-helmers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (better known as “ Radio Silence ,” directors of “ Ready or Not ” and the 2022 “Scream” reboot), could have delivered more, even though disenchanted viewers can’t exactly claim false advertising. The setup is strictly by the numbers and the characters are all stock types.

A team of bickering misfits kidnaps the title character (Weir). They follow her home with a comically oversized gizmo stuck to the bottom of her chauffeur’s car. Then they bring the 12-year-old-looking girl to a secluded mansion, where they’re reminded of their mission’s stakes. Shady but well-dressed ring-leader Lambert ( Giancarlo Esposito ) gives us and them the rundown: no real names, no cell phones, nothing personal—it’s 24 hours of baby-sitting a pre-teen who really likes to plié and step-toe her way through “Swan Lake” rehearsals. Simple is as simple does.

We learn very little about everyone, thanks in no small part to a scene where Lambert nicknames the characters after members of the Rat Pack. Durand’s character, a jolly-but-dim muscle-bro named Peter, tries to find the sense in being nicknamed after rats. Later, he gets that it’s a disposable pop culture reference and promptly moves on.

Peter’s the most sympathetic character in “Abigail,” partly because he’s constantly straining against the limits of what his character can know and do. He’s joined by a call sheet of tropes, including Abigail’s minder, the empathetic and observant Joey (Melissa Barrera); their irritating and wasted driver Dean (the late “ Euphoria ” star Angus Cloud ); and the strong-silent ex-soldier Rickles ( William Catlett ). Eventually, the team has to worry not only about Abigail, but a few predictable liabilities, like their bratty and easily bored electronics hacker Sammy ( Kathryn Newton ) and their foul-mouthed, inexplicably accented ex-cop backup leader Frank (Stevens).

None of these party game-light character traits really matter once Abigail gets loose from her handcuffs. The house that Abigail’s prey stay in has more personality, but it’s basically the house from “ Clue ” with some extra goth-y touch-ups. Maybe that’s all you need to enjoy watching a game cast check off every box as they struggle to figure out how to stop a “real” vampire. Nothing worth writing home about comes to mind.

It’s hard to get too excited watching so many talented actors try and barely succeed in making you want to care about their characters, especially since that isn’t the same thing as making you care. More could have been done with less tedious dialogue, as what's here is designed mostly just to hold the hands of viewers as the plot skips from beat to beat. More could have also been done with Joey, who, at one point, stuffs a loaded gun into her tight jeans’ waistband. I do and I don’t believe it.

“Abigail” may find its audience given a lucky combination of good timing and wishful thinking. It’s not badly made, just uninspired and played out. If you like B-movies made with a budget and are specifically looking for an undemanding time, “Abigail” might be for you. “Abigail” might also disappoint you, especially if you’re hoping for more than what’s advertised.

Netflix’s most addictive movie of 2024 is now streaming. Here’s why you need to watch it

Jason Struss

Thrillers come in all shapes and sizes. There’s the psychological or serial killer thriller, which was popularized in the ’90s by The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en . There’s the erotic thriller, which had its heyday in the late ’80s and early ’90s with such hits as Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct . And then there’s the action thriller, which is probably the most popular offshoot of the genre right now, with the Taken series and Salt as prime examples.

The story everyone is after

A tense standoff, a killer cast, more than just an effective thriller.

Recently, there’s been a revival of a subgenre that’s been dormant since the 1970s: the journalism thriller. From Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal to the Oscar-winning Spotlight to 2022’s She Said, this type of thriller usually centers around journalists pursuing a controversial and sometimes dangerous story. One of the best journalism thrillers has just been released by Netflix : Scoop . In chronicling how the BBC managed to snag the scoop of the decade by interviewing Prince Andrew about his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the movie manages to be suspenseful, informative, and one of 2024’s most purely entertaining films.

If your memory is foggy, or if you don’t follow royal scandals or the news on a regular basis, here’s the real-life event that Scoop depicts. In late 2019, Prince Andrew was interviewed by British journalist Emily Maitlis about his decades-long relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a rich American financier who had been convicted of being a sex offender and, that August, had died under mysterious circumstances while in prison.

The interview was aired on the BBC program Newsnight on November 19 and immediately received worldwide attention for Andrew’s odd explanations for his behavior and unwillingness to show any sympathy toward Epstein’s victims. For example, in response to an allegation that he sweated on an underage girl at a dance club, he asserted that he doesn’t sweat, ever , so that couldn’t possibly be true.

The consequences of the interview were devastating for Prince Andrew. After it aired, he was stripped of his royal titles and receded from public view. The royal establishment took yet another public beating, with some wondering why taxpayer money was funding a member who seemingly partook in illegal activities with Epstein and yet didn’t experience any legal ramifications. Almost everyone, both in the U.K. and across the world, asked the same question: why on Earth would someone as private and protected as Prince Andrew agree to such an interview in the first place?

Scoop is a two-hour-long answer to that question. It starts in 2010 in New York City, when an enterprising paparazzo photographs Andrew and Epstein together walking in Central Park, establishing a clear and public link between the two men. That picture is remembered by Sam McAlister (Billie Piper), a talent booker for the BBC, who smells a story developing with Epstein’s ongoing trial, subsequent conviction, and eventual death, which puts pressure on Andrew to address his controversial association with the sex offender.

Scoop presents two sides of the story: the BBC journalists, represented by McAlister, Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), and editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai); and the Royal Family, who, aside from Andrew (Rufus Sewell), is almost entirely run by Amanda Thirsk (Keeley Hawes), who is torn between duty and a gradual realization her boss is a sleazebag.

As we see the two sides circle each other warily, the movie’s director, Philip Martin, never lets up on the tension felt both within the opposing ranks as well as when they intermittently meet to decide on if, when, and how the interview will take place. It’s genuinely thrilling to see McAlister chase her story and for the other journalists to pick up the baton after her part is largely finished. As the interview is set up, Maitlis wryly observes that it feels like she’s going to a gunfight in an old Western movie. And that’s what the interview comes down to: two people facing each other, one armed with facts and the other with a ludicrous defense and a complete lack of awareness that he’s done anything wrong.

This kind of thriller doesn’t work if you don’t have a great cast, which is why Scoop is so effective. Anderson continues to add to her already impressive resume as Maitlis, who has to navigate the fine line between respecting the institution she’s investigating and getting answers to questions everyone in the nation has been asking for years. When Andrew casually wonders why everyone is so interested in his relationship with Epstein when he’s far better friends with Jimmy Savile (a DJ who was also a sex offender), Anderson gives an incredulous look to her producer that’s at once very funny and incredibly revealing. She can’t believe this guy is so delusional about the serious situation he’s in, and she uses that knowledge in her interview to let Andrew symbolically hang himself with his own rope.

It’s Piper, though, who impresses the most as McAlister. Armed with leopard print boots, bottle blonde curls, and a don’t-mess-with-me attitude, she sticks out among her conservative BBC peers, but it’s precisely her outsider status and her willingness to chase after a story when no one else dares to pursue it that makes her such a great character to follow. She’s the only one that Scoop allows us to see at home, where she confides to her mother about wanting to be seen as important and tries to guide her teenage son through the first pangs of romance.

Piper is probably best known in the U.S. for her work as the companion Rose Tyler on Doctor Who , but she’s quietly put together an impressive CV with standout performances in The Secret Diary of a Call Girl , Collateral , and I Hate Suzie . In Scoop , she leads an ensemble with an authority and brassiness that only a star could deliver. Scoop is revelatory in many ways, but perhaps its biggest shock to most audiences is just how good Piper is and how good she’s always been.

Like all good thrillers, Scoop is more than its subject matter. While it faithfully and expertly re-enacts the lead-up to, and quick production of, the interview with Prince Andrew, it also poses intriguing arguments about the state of journalism and the culpability of public figures to own up to their past sins. Everyone knows and respects the BBC, but that doesn’t make it profitable or competitive with other news outlets and social media, and it’s this conundrum — the need for relevance while still preserving a brand of integrity — that drives many of Scoop ‘s characters.

In addition, Scoop is in many ways a sister to Steven Spielberg ‘s The Post and She Said , to other movies about the need for journalism to hold public figures like Richard Nixon, Harvey Weinstein, and yes, the Royal Family, accountable for their actions. It’s not wrong to categorize Scoop as a thriller — its slick direction and propulsive score by Anne Nikitin and Hannah Peel more than supports that justification — but it’s also a great movie about the value and necessity of a free press in the 21st century. Who knew a dramatic retelling of a five-year-old interview could be so thrilling to watch and so rich to think about?

Peacock subscribers should be very happy with their film lineup this month. The Godfather trilogy is back, and so are the first four Mission: Impossible movies. But those could hardly be called underrated movies. And with so many options to choose from, some of this month's new arrivals on Peacock could easily fall under your radar.

That's why we've put together this list of the three underrated movies on Peacock that you need to watch in April. Two of our picks are comedies, but our first choice is a crime drama that is also one of Al Pacino's most underappreciated films from the '90s. Carlito's Way (1993)

There are few streaming services with a deeper lineup of great movies to watch than Max. Whatever you're looking for, you're almost guaranteed to find at least a few options on the streaming service, and that's especially true for crime dramas. Every streamer has at least a few crime dramas. After all, it's been a staple of movie-making for as long as movies have been around.

Max, though, has so many that it can actually be tough to pick one if you don't already know what you're looking for, which is, of course, where we come in. We've assembled three great Max crime dramas you should watch in April of 2024: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers

After an exciting premiere at South by Southwest, Monkey Man is finally hitting theaters this weekend. The film marks the directorial debut of Dev Patel, who co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Patel also stars as Kid, a man who makes a living as a masked fighter in an underground fight club. After his mother's death, Kid embarks on a mission to find and kill her murderers, leading him down a path of vengeance and destruction.

Monkey Man is the latest addition to the action thriller genre. It's one of our most anticipated movies of spring 2024. These films are typically gory, brutal, and violent, but highly entertaining in the end. If you enjoyed Monkey Man, then watch these three films. Our selections include the fourth film in one of Hollywood's best franchises, an iconic movie from the early 2000s, and a stylish neo-noir. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

‘Coup de Chance’ Review: Woody Allen’s Usual With a French Twist

Despite its Parisian setting, the setup is familiar from any of Allen’s New York movies: An act of infidelity presents a dilemma. Some of the jokes are funny.

A man in a brown corduroy jacket and collared shirt and a woman in a blue trench coat walk and laugh in a Parisian park.

“Coup de Chance,” the latest from Woody Allen, looks and plays like many of his recent movies, only better; it sounds like them, too, except that it’s in French. Set entirely in France, it features well-heeled, loquacious narcissists who circle one another in a comic-dramatic story that touches on existential worries and folds in lightly jaundiced observations about life. There are pretty people and handsome homes, repressed lives and unleashed desires, the usual. As is often the case in Allen’s movies, there’s also an act of infidelity, which presents a dilemma, if not an especially torturous one. The jokes are fairly muted; some are funny.

In a pleasant surprise, it centers on a woman, Fanny Fournier (Lou de Laâge), who didn’t make me cringe once. She’s intelligent as well as attractive, for starters, somewhere in her 30s and on her second husband, Jean (Melvil Poupaud). She lives in Paris, works at an auction gallery and seems interested in the world. Her life has texture and perhaps meaning, even if it’s a haut bourgeois bubble. There’s a Birkin bag on her arm when you meet her, as well as a maid to fetch drinks and a driver to deliver her and Jean to their country house, one of those quietly expensive retreats that most of us read about while waiting to get our hair cut.

In this madcap film, a mother’s apology leads to a delightful misadventure that begins with mourning and ends with a father’s favorite recipe.

Dreams are meant to be shattered in some stories, and bubbles popped. And so it is that one day Fanny runs into an old school friend, Alain (Niels Schneider), a charmer with a piercing gaze and angelic crown of tousled hair made for tender caresses. They exchange smiles and pleasantries — she also repeats her married name for him — and they make plans to have lunch. Life seems to resume normally for Fanny, but meeting Alain disturbs something in the air, as if there was a drop in atmospheric pressure. That night when she goes to a party with Jean, a tightly wound guy with money and some mystery, she seems restless, almost uneasy.

Thereafter, everything quickly falls into place. Fanny and Alain have one lunch and then another, and before long they’re in bed in his fairy-tale garret apartment. The affair rocks her, yet while Laâge lets you see that her character’s pulse has quickened and her eyes seem brighter, whatever the liaison has stirred in Fanny’s soul isn’t of interest to Allen. There are no shots of the lovers lying sex-drunk in bed, entwined in each other’s arms; only the amber light of Vittorio Storaro’s cinematography suggests there’s any heat in the room. And when Fanny tells a friend that the affair excites her, you have to take her word for it.

“Coup de Chance” is more sketched-in than satisfyingly detailed. Most of the characters are types, and despite some local color, the story might as well play out in New York, but it’s amusing, technically adept and looks like a professionally made movie (no small thing in the streaming age). The mood and tone remain consistently light, even as Allen piles on the teasingly ominous details, including a mysterious death that hovers in the background, as well as some thugs and private detectives who lurk on the sidelines. He also introduces a great character with Fanny’s mother, Camille (the invaluable Valérie Lemercier), whose conveniently timed visit with her daughter leads to the movie’s strongest, funniest bits.

Not long into “Coup de Chance” it becomes clear that Allen isn’t much interested in the affair as a human experience, profound or not; his focus is on its fallout and the cascade of dramatic events that ensue after Jean begins to suspect Fanny. Once he does, the story’s center of gravity increasingly lists toward him. It isn’t a happy shift, at least at first, partly because Fanny is more appealing than Jean is. By that point, Allen has seeded the story with suggestive details about the couple: She fears that their friends see her as a trophy wife (they do), while Jean’s attentiveness seems controlling, at times creepy.

If your sympathies remain with Fanny, it’s partly because Laâge’s unforced naturalism draws you to her character while Poupaud’s heightened, at times borderline caricature can be almost aggressively off-putting. Poupaud can be a subtly expressive actor, so the broadness of his performance initially reads as a mistake, as if he — like so many of Allen’s actors — had been left to figure out the character on his own and went in the wrong direction. Whether that’s how it played out, the net effect serves the story and Allen’s views on human affairs of the heart and conscience. “People carry sins around,” as someone says in “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” one of Allen’s greatest films. “It passes — with time, it all fades.”

Coup de Chance Rated PG-13 for gun violence. In French, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 33 minutes. In theaters.
