Tuition Fees List: Home and International (Postgraduate Research)

Please refer to your course, year of study and year of entry to locate the relevant fee rate.

Students will be charged the annual fee until they finish the expected duration of the course fee or submit their thesis at which time the university will suspend further direct debit collection and refund any fees paid for the remaining part of the year on a pro rata basis. Students will be charged a continuation fee from the point of submission of thesis until the board of examiners confirms the award. If a student submits in advance of their expected course duration end date, they will move on to the continuation fee status.

The fees below relate to continuing students. The annual fee that a student will be charged is determined by the year of entry.

For many applicants, your fee status is the same as your current country of residence. However, not all cases are this straightforward. We use the information you provide on your application to determine your fee status, and will confirm this with you after you submit your application.

Tuition fees for EU undergraduates from 2021

The Scottish Government has confirmed EU students commencing their studies in 2021/22 and later will  not  be eligible for Home fees (free tuition)  nor  funding from the Scottish government i.e. all non-UK students will be treated identically.

Tuition fees for EU undergraduates starting in 2019 and 2020

The Scottish Government has now confirmed free tuition in Scotland for EU students commencing their studies in 2019 and 2020. Students will be admitted as Scottish/EU fee status students and retain that status for the duration of their studies. EU students enrolling in 2019 and 2020 continue to remain eligible for tuition fee support from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

The below table outlines expected tuition fee rates for 2024/25 for EU and international students.

Additional fees, exceptions and notes

The following additional fees are applicable:

• The exceptions to standard fees listed are correct at the time of going to press.  However, you should check the fee level applicable to your course of study at the time of your admission.
• Fees quoted are for new entrants. Different fees may apply to some continuing students.
• International students may, in certain limited circumstances, be admitted to part-time study paying an appropriate percentage of the relevant full-time international fee.
• Special fees apply to members of staff undertaking part-time study. Details may be obtained from:  Tuition fees for members of staff
• Students who are eligible by virtue of previous attendances to sit degree examinations must enter for the examinations at the normal registration period at the beginning of the session and pay a registration fee of £170.
• Late fees are charged at 3% with a minimum charge of £5. Late fees will not be charged to sponsors.
• From 2016/17 all international students at Scottish Medical Schools must make a contribution to the teaching costs of the NHS (the ACT levy). The University of Glasgow is subsidising this charge for students, and the fee rate provided includes the portion being paid through student fees. No additional payment for the NHS ACT levy above the fee rate will be required from students. The ACT levy is currently set at £10,000 per year but this figure is subject to change, and any changes may affect the overall tuition fee.

Establishing relevant connection with the UK

EU students that meet our criteria for EU Fee Status will have an International tuition fee applied and may require to obtain a student visa to study in the UK.  Fee Status, tuition fees and immigration requirements will be advised in your offer letter.

Irish nationals who are living in the Common Travel Area of the UK, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and Internationals with Indefinite Leave to remain status can also qualify for home fee status. Please refer to Fee Status Policy.

Gsas students shine in 2024 three minute thesis competition.

The 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) at Brandeis Graduate School of Arts & Sciences was not Will Dahl’s first rodeo. “It took me two tries,” the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student said. “On my first attempt last year, I missed a line and stood silent for what felt like ages. To be honest, I was terrified!” This year, Will took home the first place prize for the Sciences of $1,000 and the overall win. He credits his success to careful planning, refinement, and lots of practice. He focused on formatting his talk as a story that would resonate with a wide audience: “Every sentence must be calibrated to communicate, and there is no room for asides. The talk converges from broader impacts to the actual thesis.”

Explaining your research in just three minutes is a tall order, but on April 5, the third annual 3MT Competition, founded by the University of Queensland , saw ten GSAS students meet that very task. Marika McCann, Associate Director of Professional Development at GSAS and member of the 3MT team, alongside Associate Professor of Anthropology and Faculty Director of Professional Development Jon Anjaria; Anahita Zare of MRSEC ; and Becky Prigge, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at GSAS, said this about the 2024 competitors: “Our team was very impressed with how hard our students worked and the overall enthusiasm they brought to their talks. The audience learned so much from our students in this short time, including the possibility of early detection of Parkinson’s Disease, the importance of examining circadian rhythms, patterns in Honduran ceramics, and Tamil transfeminine performance in post-war Sri Lanka.”

Under the bright white stage lights and looking out upon an audience of friends, family, members of the Brandeis community, and a panel of five judges, finalists took to the Spingold Theatre stage. While it was certainly nerve-wracking, contestants noted the benefits of presenting in this format.

Manning Zhang, who won first place in the Humanities/Creative Arts/Social Sciences category, said the best moment of the competition was standing on the stage for the final round with rushing adrenaline. Acknowledging that few friends and family know about what she researches in Sociology and Health Policy, she began sharing more with them to understand how different people would react to her research. While this helped her prepare for the competition, it ended up holding deeper meaning for Zhang: “It took me a really long time to pursue my research and say, ‘This is meaningful.’ Getting feedback from people and hearing that they understand what I’m doing is really important to me.”

Victoria Khaghani, a Master’s student in Anthropology who was Runner Up in the Humanities/Creative Arts/Social Sciences category, echoed this sentiment. “You have to push yourself pretty hard to be able to condense your research down. But being able to then present my research to my family and have them say, ‘We finally understand what you’re doing,’ where they can understand the importance of it…that was huge.”

While contestants hoped to teach their audience something about their research, some finished the competition having learned new things about themselves. “I really like speaking in front of people,” Pranav Ojha, a Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student, discovered. “Figuring out what words to say, how to communicate them to inspire care - I enjoyed that process, and I’m coming out of it with different career ideas.” His passion for public speaking was evident - Ojha finished the competition with a total $1,250, after winning both Runner Up in the Sciences and the People’s Choice Award, which is determined through audience vote.

The final round may have showcased three minutes of individual presentation, but 3MT thrives as a collective and collaborative effort. “This is one of the only opportunities GSAS students at Brandeis have to share their research with the overall Brandeis community, outside of their departments,” McCann noted. Zhang (Sociology and Health Policy) even reached out to 2022 winner Emiliano Gutierrez-Popoca (PhD English ‘23), whose talk on Master-Servant Relations in Early Modern Drama led him to the National 3MT competition. Though they come from different disciplines, 3MT provided a platform for shared experience, and Popoca helped Zhang revise her draft for the final round. “I’ve gained a lot of rapport with people I didn’t think I could have rapport with…networking is very precious,” Zhang said. The 3MT community at Brandeis continues to strengthen and grow, and we cannot wait for next year!

Programme structure

The teaching is frontloaded with skills most relevant to the workplace, enabling apprentices to become valuable team members faster. To gain a complete grounding in software engineering, theoretical foundations are taught at a later stage.

Years 1 and 2

University-based learning is delivered to graduate apprentices in intensive 8-week teaching blocks during November to December and March to April. This allows you to spend extended, uninterrupted periods in the workplace outside of these teaching blocks. By delivering university-based teaching in solid blocks, our unique programme structure mitigates the effects of context switching – this has been found to help you learn faster.

Years 3 and 4

University-based learning follows a day-release model and you will take classes alongside Honours students from our traditional degree programmes. You have an opportunity to specialise if you wish and can choose subjects from the University’s full honours catalogue of electives, taught by leading experts in the relevant fields.

Entry requirements

For entry in 2024, summary of entry requirements for software engineering (graduate apprenticeship).

All candidates must hold an offer of employment with one of our Partner Employers  and be eligible for SAAS funding , so this course is not suitable for international candidates or normally for candidates from the rest of the UK*.

*Candidates from the rest of the UK may be eligible if they are resident in Scotland from 1 August 2024.

SQA Higher Entry Requirements

• BBBB or above achieved by S6.
• Additional requirements: Higher Mathematics at B or above. Highers should include two Science subjects.

SQA Higher Adjusted Entry Requirements

• No Adjusted Higher Requirements. We do, however, recognise alternative routes to study: see Access Glasgow for eligibility .

A-level Standard Entry Requirements

• Additional requirements: A-level Mathematics.

IB Standard Entry Requirements

• 36 (6,6,5 HL) – 32 (6,5,5 HL)  
• Additional requirements: HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches).
• Grade B achieved in Computing, Software Development or Computer Games Development
• All the above MUST include the Maths Calculus Module OR candidates must have Higher Maths at B or above.

Modern Apprentice

• Merit or Distinction achieved in Diploma for Information Technology and Telecommunications
• Professionals SCQF Level 8
• Higher Maths at B or above.

English language

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

English language requirements

International english language testing system (ielts) academic module (not general training).

• 6.5 with no sub-test under 6.0.
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

Common equivalent English language qualifications

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission to this programme:

TOEFL (ib, my best or athome)

• 90 with minimum R 20, L 19, S 19, W 23.
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Combined scores from two tests taken within 6 months of each other can be considered.

PTE (Academic)

• 60 with minimum 59 in all sub-tests.

Glasgow International College English Language (and other foundation providers)

• Tests are accepted for academic year following sitting.

University of Glasgow Pre-sessional courses

Cambridge english qualifications.

• Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): 176 overall, no subtest less than 169
• Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE): 176 overall, no subtest less than 169

School Qualifications

• iGCSE English or ESOL 0522/0500, grade C
• International Baccalaureate English A SL5 or HL5
• International Baccalaureate English B SL6 or HL5
• SQA National 5 English or ESOL, grade B
• SQA Higher English or ESOL, grade C
• Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, English Language grade 4
• West African Examination Council, Senior Secondary School Certificate, English grade C6

Alternatives to English Language qualification

• Undergraduate degree from English speaking country (including Canada if taught in English)
• Undergraduate 2+2 degree from English speaking country
• Undergraduate 2+2 TNE degree taught in English in non-English speaking country
• Masters degree from English speaking country
• Masters degree (equivalent on NARIC to UK masters degree) taught in English in non-English speaking country.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept an IELTS test (Academic module) from any of the 1000 IELTS test centres from around the world and we do not require a specific UKVI IELTS test for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.

The University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures offers a range of Pre-sessional courses  to bring you up to entry level. The course is accredited by BALEAP, the UK professional association for academic English teaching.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa, your qualification must be one of the secure English language tests accepted by UK Border Agency:

Visa requirements and proof of English language level

It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old . A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website . If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.

Career prospects

In 2023 the first cohort of graduates completed their apprenticeships and 100% are in positive destinations. Many have continued with the employer they studied their apprenticeship with, some have gone onto advanced roles with other employers and others have gone on to advanced studies.

Fees and funding

All students applying for a Graduate Apprenticeship also apply to the Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) to have their tuition fees paid. SAAS pays tuition fees for Graduate Apprentices directly to the university in the same way that fees for other Higher Education (HE) courses are managed.

The eligibility requirements for SAAS funding for Graduate Apprenticeships are broader than for other HE courses.

Rather than receiving a student loan or bursary for living expenses from SAAS, you will receive a fulltime salary from Year 1 above the living wage from the employer you are working with.
