A CV, or Curriculum Vitae, is a repository of all academic credentials, experiences, publications, and achievements. It is used primarily in academia, research, or medical roles. Graduates or Ph.D. students typically also need a CV to prepare for or attend a graduate-level program. Compared to a resume, there are no set page limits for CVs, and CVs should be as comprehensive and detailed as possible.
Check out this fantastic article, “What Is a CV (Curriculum Vitae)? by Rachel Pelta, on Forage , an open-access platform that connects Cougs with virtual work experience programs. They recommend the following sections:
) |
For more details on formatting, check out the advice in “Dr. Karen’s Rules of the Academic CV ” by Karen Kelsey on TheProfessorisin.com. They give a great outline on how to start formatting each section.
As with all professional application materials, a CV is an evolving document . The CV you submit to enter your graduate or Ph.D. program will change as you build on your research, dissertation, teaching experiences, and other skills toward graduation.
WSU students can access various resources to get started on their CV development and hiring packages. Visit the ASCC Graduate Student page for information on connecting with a career coach, attending events, and accessing job resources tailored to graduate and Ph.D. students.
Finally, an essential step in developing our CV and making it application-ready will be to regularly connect with your Graduate Program lead or Principal Investigator (PI) regarding your upcoming applications and CV development . As successful specialists in your field of study, they can give you up-to-date and trending advice about what to include regarding your specific program and skill sets. In addition, they will likely serve as your reference(s) as you move forward with the application process.

Resume and Cover Letters
A strong, professional application packet is critical to your job search.
A resume is the one document that can either get you an interview or leave you out of one. It is important that employers can easily obtain relevant and concise information, but with specific details. Below are some general tips and examples:
Resume Guidelines
Items to include:
Header with your name, address, email (must be a professional email address), phone number, and personalized LinkedIn URL
Education
Section headers such as: Experience, Volunteer Work, Leadership Roles, Honors and Distinctions, etc.
Targeted bullet points (each starting with various action verbs) describing your accomplishments, as relates to the job description for the job you are applying for
Formatting:
1/2 or 1 inch margins on all sides
10-12pt. font
Professional style font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Helvetica, etc.)
One page (unless you have two full pages of relevant information – Various Action Verbs)
Single-spaced
NO TEMPLATES!
Sample Resume
Typically, a reference sheet includes three to five professional references with contact information for each. Professional references may include supervisors, coworkers, or professors. Make sure to ask permission before listing the reference. Provide the references with a copy of your resume, and alert them when to expect calls from employers.
If the references will need to write a letter of recommendation, also ensure you give them at least a month’s notice, give them a specific deadline, and provide all directions needed to successfully complete the letter (Do they put it in a sealed envelope and give it to you? Email it to someone? Mail it themselves?)
Cover Letters
This document provides the space for you to clearly articulate why you are the best person for this internship/job and how you meet all of the qualifications. Make your cover letter interesting to read, concise (one page maximum), personable, and detailed.

Interview Preparations and Tips
Whether you’re having informal chats at a career fair or a formal, one-on-one interview, you need to prepare to represent yourself well.
Research Companies of Interest
For each company that interests you, know the basics:
- Products, services, customers, markets, etc.
- Organizational structure and size
- Mission, goals, and values
- Positions offered/career paths and types of jobs
- Locations of offices, headquarters, etc.
- Marketing campaigns and competitors
- CEO and other upper-level management
Look for background information in the following places:
- Company websites
- Company’s annual report and press releases
- Professional journals, magazines, and other publications
Determine how you could fit
- If you are applying for a specific job, learn as much as you can about it.
- Be able to articulate why you are interested in a specific company.
- Match your qualifications to the company.
Prepare an Elevator Pitch
Prepare a 30-second introduction for yourself. Include:
- Your year in school and major/minor
- Career goals or interests
- What makes you unique (club involvement, leadership, work experiences, etc.)
- End on a question specific to whom you are speaking with
Example for Creating a Winning 30 Second Elevator Pitch
- (Who are you?) Hello, my name is ______ (offer handshake)
- (Mention a link if you have one) ________ suggested I contact you.
- (Connect yourself to them by mentioning some personal information) I am a ______ studying _________. OR I am interested in ___________.
- (Schmooze a little – acknowledge that you know a bit about them or have a mutual interest) I see/understand that you ______. I admire what you have done with ____. The _____ with _______ is very interesting.
- (Ask a leading question) What can you tell me about ________? I would like to hear more about _________.
- Thank you for your time. (Get contact info!) Do you have a business card? Here is my card. (Offer your info) I would love to talk with you more about this. This is great information. May I contact you later?
Follow Up and Send Thank You Cards
Send the interviewer an email or handwritten thank-you card within 48 hours. Doing so solidifies your interest in the position, demonstrates your professionalism, and distinguishes you from other candidates.
- Use an appropriate “business-style” card
- Send the card so the employer receives it within two or three days
- Thank the recruiter for their time and prompt consideration
- Don’t talk about yourself (except to briefly mention something important you forgot to say in person)
- Write in a professional and formal manner—no slang or abbreviations
- Keep it simple and brief
- Address the card to the specific individual you talked to using Mr. or Ms.
- If you met multiple people, write to each of them an individual card
- Have someone proofread your cards to avoid errors
Anticipate Questions
- Practice answering questions with a mock interviewer and/or yourself in the mirror
- Situation: Describe the specific situation that you were in. This can be from a previous job, a volunteer experience, or any relevant event.
- Task: Describe the task you needed to accomplish. What was the goal?
- Action: Describe the action you took and keep the focus on what you did.
- Results: Explain the results you achieved. What happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn?
- Have two or three questions prepared to ask each representative individually.
Questions that interviewers may ask you
- Tell me about yourself.
- What is your most important accomplishment to date?
- What motivates you?
- Why should I hire you?
- Tell me about some of your recent goals and what you did to achieve them?
- What do you see yourself doing five years from now?
- What major problem have you had to deal with recently?
- What is your greatest strength?
- What is your greatest weakness?
- If I were to ask one of your professors or a boss to describe you, what would they say?
Questions that you might ask your interviewers
- What do you like best about your job?
- What do you like best about this company?
- What is the most important quality you are looking for in a candidate for this position?
- What are your expectations for the person you hire?
- What do you see as the main priorities of this position?
- What do you see as the main challenges for this position?
- Do you offer a training program? If so, can you explain it?
- What are the advancement opportunities for this position and the typical time frame for advancement?
- What makes this company/organization different from others?
- What would a typical day be like in this position?
- Where do you see the company headed in the next 3–5 years?
- Can you explain your organizational structure?
- How would you describe your corporate culture?
- I’m excited about this position. What are the next steps in the hiring process?
- What is your timeline for making this hiring decision?
Internship Resources
Internships provide hands on experience to students in all grade levels. They help students add experience to their resume in addition to helping them find out whether their intended career path is the best choice for them. Beginning in the first year, students should be working to get an internship to get the hands on experience to help them achieve their career goals upon graduating from WSU Tri-Cities.
Where to find internships
Handshake is the system WSU uses to house all internship opportunities. Local organizations who work directly with WSU Tri-Cities will post their opportunities through Handshake.
ANRinterns.com ANR works directly with the Department of Energy, Hanford, Mission Support Alliance, and the CH2MHILL internship programs.
Workforce Portal – WSU Tri-Cities partnered with the Association of Washington Business, the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Columbia Basin College to launch a new portal that will help connect students with internships and other career opportunities. Use the advanced internship search to find an internship by keyword, job category, location and more. If you don’t see anything that interests you, continue to check the website as new positions are added frequently.
Check the employers where you are interested in working. Many employers often have their own internship programs.
Internship for college credit
Many degree programs require an internship or practicum as a graduation requirement. Check with your academic advisor to inquire about your degree requirements.
Things to keep in mind:
- There is a cost associated with internship credit. Students pay a per credit cost if they are below 10 credits or above 18 credits. If a student is between 10-18 credits, the cost is combined with the general tuition cost.
- There may be additional assignments required by your program if receiving credit.
- These credits may help with degree completion.
- Internships may give you first hand experience for your future career.
Paid internships
Not all internships are required to be paid. There are paid and unpaid internship opportunities available.
Tips and Advice
Before applying, set up an appointment with career services to get your resume and cover letter updated.
Practice for the interview. Career services can help students develop answers to those hard interview questions.
Check often for new internship opportunities. While it may seem most internships are spring semester or summer semester, internships are actually offered year around. Career services is open throughout the summer and is always available to help students with those last minute questions.
Dress for success. Even if your internship may be working in a warehouse, for the interview you always want to bring your best foot forward. Business professional is always encouraged with interviews.
After your interview, do not forget to write a thank you letter. A quick thank you email or a handwritten note may put you one step above other candidates.
Handshake and Job Search
- WSU partners with Handshake to connect students and employers together. It is an online employment resource for students and alumni. First, set up an account and let the job and internship hunt begin. Many employers will use Handshake to recruit students.
- Stuck in the job hunt and not sure where to start? Connect with the career services and schedule an appointment to get one-on-one career coaching.
Career Coaching
Career services offers personal one-on-one career coaching to any current student of WSU Tri-Cities. Services are free, comprehensive and confidential. While we can accommodate some drop-in appointments, most will be seen by scheduled appointment. You may also consider checking out myMajors , to see if your current major best fits your interests. To schedule an appointment, simply:
Email your questions to [email protected]
Make an appointment
Mock Interviews
What do you say when the interviewer asks, “What is your greatest weakness?” or “Tell me about yourself.” There are positive ways to answer these and other difficult questions that avoid the pitfalls into which many fall.
We can prepare you with interview strategies and then put you through a mock interview to practice your skills!

The importance of a targeted resume
Recruiters and resume screening software (ATS) are looking for specific keywords on your resume. Recruiters and hiring managers spend an average of six seconds on each resume. They obviously don't read your resume. They skim it quickly for keywords to evaluate if you're a good fit. Here's a simple example: if you're applying for a 'Java Developer' job, recruiters are going to make sure you have "Java" experience by quickly scanning your resume for the keyword 'Java'. If your resume contains the right keywords that were in the job description, it implies it is a well targeted resume. Similarly, pretty much every company uses some kind of resume screening software, called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), to quickly filter and rank the thousands of applicants that apply to each job. These software rank your resume based on its relevancy to the job description. Our platform helps you identify the right ATS keywords you need to include on your resume to increase your resume's relevancy and get past these systems. The higher your resume's relevancy, the more your resume is well targeted to the job description. Target your resume
How do you target your resume to a job description?
Before Targeted Resume, you'd have to spend hours reviewing the job description to find the right keywords you need to include and then look for the ones your resume is missing. After Targeted Resume, you can tailor your resume to a job description in less than 30 seconds. Simply add in the job description you're applying to and upload your resume, and our algorithms will tell you exactly what important keywords your resume is missing. Commentary: After Apple Cup win, could WSU make the College Football Playoff?
The “Go Cougs” crowd is about to adopt a two-word mantra that was once as blasphemous as they come: “Go Dawgs.”
In a time when there may have never been more animus toward their cross-state rival, Wazzu fans are in the unfamiliar position of becoming Husky honks.
WSU’s 24-19 win over Washington on Saturday was one of the most satisfying in program history. The upset temporarily tempered the torment that came with the dissolution of the Pac-12.
But now something bigger is in play — an unlikely-but-not-impossible scenario for the players on the Palouse: A College Football Playoff berth.
Assuming they can get some help from UW.
Apologies for the you-totally-jinxed-it introduction that’s looking more than two months ahead. It’s just that … it’s quite possible Washington State (3-0) has already played its toughest opponent in the Huskies. This has little to do with the Cougs’ strength and mostly to do with their schedule.
Remaining for the former Power Five mainstay are San Jose State, Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, San Diego State, Utah State, New Mexico, Oregon State and Wyoming. None of those teams is in the AP Top 25 poll. Boise State is essentially 27th based on “others receiving votes,” with WSU coming in at 31st.
Some might argue that beating Washington (2-1) makes this year a victory no matter what happens next. Others might say the rivalry win mixed with a bowl game would be enough for this season to satisfy. But what if the Cougs did run the table and somehow host a CFP game? Or what if they go 11-1 and still sneak in?
As it stands, ESPN’s playoff predictor gives Washington State (3-0) a 24 percent chance to reach the 12-team playoff. That is tied for 16th among all schools in the FBS. The team WSU is tied with at 24 percent is Boise, which the predictor currently thinks will beat the Cougs on Sept. 28.
Still, even at 11-1 the Cougs would have a legitimate shot to reach the CFP. In fact, the predictor is giving a one-loss WSU team a better-than-50 percent chance to make the playoff if that defeat comes against Boise, Oregon or Fresno State.
This is where the Huskies (along with Texas Tech) come into play. Wazzu fans need both of these Power Four foes to have respectable seasons to bolster WSU’s résumé. Can the Red Raiders, who WSU beat 37-16 in Week 1, make waves in the now Oklahoma-less and Texas-less Big 12? Can UW upset any of its major Big Ten brethren such as Michigan, Oregon or USC?
I’ve said before that this year’s Huskies were among the most mysterious teams in program history. The extent of the roster turnover mixed with the departures of seven NFL players taken in the first three rounds made predicting their season next to impossible.
Perhaps the Cougs exposed the state of their mediocrity, which may be a charitable description for UW. Or maybe the Dawgs are a decent team that lost to a quality opponent.
Few, if any, WSU fans are actually glad that the Pac-12 came apart. The tradition and financial benefits that stemmed from playing in a major conference will be nearly impossible to duplicate, even if the league is experiencing a modest re-imagining.
But in the very short term it might have opened up a path to the College Football Playoff in a way the old Pac-12 never would have. And the Cougs have earned the nation’s rooting interest if they are able to get to that point.
It’s still unclear if WSU is any good despite its unbeaten record and offensive production. But an average of nearly 44 points per game and wins over two teams from major conferences is about as auspicious a start as a program in its position could have. WSU could also become the source of a Pacific Northwest sports rallying cry the way the Huskies were last year. Meaningful games in late November? Few around here would turn that down.
Of course, it’s easy to get amped up in September before future foes expose the reality of the situation. This was the case with Colorado last year, as the Buffs started 3-0 before finishing 4-8. This feels a little bit different, though.
I don’t think anyone — even the most passionate of Wazzu fans — thinks this WSU team can actually compete for a national title. The Cougs do, however, have a chance to become national darlings.
They’ll need many things to go right for that to happen. The Huskies succeeding is likely among them. Small concession. No matter where Washington ends up, WSU’s bragging rights are staying put.
