500+ Bookstagram Hashtags

  • Post published: June 24, 2021
  • Post last modified: October 16, 2021

Being a spreadsheet freak, I am, of course, one of those people who uses them to track my book hashtags. I’ve had this list for a while now and figured other bookish instagrammers could benefit as well! This is pretty much every hashtag I could think of (over 500 of them), sized from only a few hundred posts to millions. Consider this page a work-in-progress, as I’ll be adding new hashtags as I find them and updating the size on the current ones.

See my bookstagram page here.

If you’re wondering about specific tips for using and making the most of your bookstagram hashtags, check out my post on how to grow your bookstagram — there’s a pretty extensive section on the methods I use if you scroll to the bottom.

I’ve split the list into two parts: millions and thousands. They are then ordered smallest to largest, so it should be easier to find the broad/niche hashtags you need.

Lastly, if you notice any hashtags I’m missing and you think I should have, feel free to comment and I will add them!

Done-For-You Bookstagram Hashtag Groups

While the above hashtags are fairly easy to pick and choose between, sometimes you just want something super easy . Which is why I’ve mixed and matched the general book hashtags into groups for you.

These groups of Bookstagram hashtags are copy and paste easy! Just choose a group, highlight, and copy them and you’ll be good to go! Each group contains 20 hashtags, which leaves you plenty of room to add 5-10 hashtags from specific categories above (plus hashtagging the name of the book)…or just use the 20 hashtags exactly as they are!

Best Bookstagram Hashtags: What They Are And How To Use Them

bookstagram hasktags

While you’ve been searching for the best bookstagram hashtags, the hashtag #bookstagram itself has already been used in above 62,000,000 posts.

Bookstagram was first recognized as a small niche nook of Instagram in 2014 .

Since then, book lovers, bloggers, and marketers on Instagram have been referred to as bookstagrammers, while bookstagram has turned into a gigantic universe.

Amidst COVID-19, in particular, Instagram saw a 31% boost in book-related content.

bookstagram analytics

If you want to develop a great profile in this niche, see the rapid growth of your account, and survive the competition, let some effective bookstagram hashtags come into play.

But you need to know the game rules first because one innocent hashtag can ruin your efforts and undermine your account reputation altogether.

It’s revealed in a few paragraphs.

Keep reading to learn why proper tagging matters, what bookstagram hashtags are the most prevailing in 2022, which ones to avoid, and how to make a “wow” bookstagram account.

Hashtags for Bookstagram: Why Bother

Whether reading is a hobby, habit, or addiction for you and your bookstagram is a warm and cozy place where you share your passion with the world, or whether you’re a book blogger-solopreneur who uses Instagram for marketing purposes, you must be posting tons of bookshelf photos, to-be-read piles, single copies, or anything else related to books.

Why do you need to hashtag your images and videos the right way? Properly chosen hashtags can help you do the following:

  • Break new ground and generate creative ideas for your content;
  • Keep pace with the bookish trends;
  • Engage with your target audience;
  • Feel the sense of belongingness reaching like-minded people;
  • Gain better post visibility and expand your fan base (list of followers).

For example, Jasiek Pokrop, a content marketer from NapoleonCat, conducted an experiment and discovered that 76,193 visitors were driven purely by hashtags themselves.

best hashtags for book reviews

In fact, one Instagram hashtag can uplift post interactions by 29% , while another can “bury” your post for good.

Why is that so?

The matter is that some hashtags are often banned by Instagram.

If you use them, your post may not be visible at all.

One of the best bookstagram hashtags, 2022, got into the prohibited list as well.

Read on to discover the most popular bookstagram hashtags today and find out which one of them isn’t allowed and why.

How To Stand Out With Bookstagram Hashtags and Grow Your Account Faster

Follow some actionable pieces of advice listed below, get noticed, and build a solid base of followers on Instagram.

#1 Stay away from banned hashtags

Some hashtags accompany floods of spam.

That’s why Instagram bans them to fight spammy behavior from suspicious accounts.

When you use one of the prohibited Instagram hashtags, your post gets “shadowbanned.”

It means that it gets “buried” and is no longer discoverable.

It’s invisible to Instagram users who don’t follow you.

Shadowbanning limits the growth of your follower base and your organic reach.

Surprisingly, #books is one of the banned hashtags. Also, among them are the following:

  • #mustfollow
  • #ilovemyinstagram
  • #rate, etc.

#2 Mix hashtags up

Don’t copy-paste the same bookstagram hashtags you used for your previous videos or photos.

Instead, mix them up:

The most popular + less popular + the least popular

If a hashtag is universal and competitive, there are too many accounts using it, and, in this case, your post is moved down faster.

And vice versa: it will stay visible longer if it’s a less mainstream hashtag.

#3 Take advantage of Instagram’s “Related” feature

Pick up fresh hashtags from the “Related” list.

If you open any hashtag page, you’ll see a number of related hashtags (above the Top and Recent tabs).

Here you’ll find some associated examples with the one you searched for.

#4 Add niche-specific hashtags

When you specify your hashtag and narrow down your content to one niche, you can increase your bookstagram post engagement.

It’s because it will stay on the top longer and get discovered by people who are interested in a particular topic.

Have a look at some niche categories you may choose from:

  • Genre-distinctive:#memoir, #romance, #fiction, #crime, #scifi, #mystery, #detective, #fantasy, #horror, etc.
  • Age-related:#youngadultbooks, #booksforkids, #kidlit, #kidsbooks, etc.
  • Books& ___ category:#booksanddogs, #booksandwine, #booksandcoffee, etc.
  • Everything else:#librarybook, #borrowedbooks, #shelfie, #bookshelfporn, #instabookclub, etc.

For example, you might want to share your experience with other book recyclers on how you repurpose old hardcover books .

So, you should definitely go with:

#hardcovers, #hardcoverbook, #recycledbooks, #repurposedbooks, #oldbooks, #diy, #secondhandbooks, #recycledart, #bookpages, and the like.

#5 Try personalization

To gather your audience around you and make a fandom, personalize your bookstagram as much as possible and create a branded or DIY hashtag.

E.g., #wordchild is a hashtag coined by a famous bookstagrammer to match the name of the blog word-child.com.

best hashtags for book reviews

Writers also use personalized hashtags to make it easier for their fans to interact with them.

Lucey Foley , an author of historical fiction and mystery novels, goes with #lucyfoleyauthor.

Jerry Han, a YA fiction writer, has got over 165,000 posts tagged with #jerryhan.

#6 Use Instagram’s potential to the fullest

How many hashtags to use.

The average Instagram post contains 10–11 hashtags , while 11+ hashtags in a single post lead to a 79% growth in interactions.

How many hashtags do you typically add to your bookstagram video or image?

As you may be well aware, Instagram has set a 30-hashtag limit.

Why not use all 30?

The more hashtags you insert, the more views you may get.

Where to place them?

As for the suitable place for hashtags, they are effective in both the caption and the comment box.

However, your post will look cleaner and not so “overloaded” if you leave them in the comments section.

#7 Save time and generate hashtags automatically

For instance, you’ve decided to catch the wave of the book’s popularity.

Let’s take the most recent one that rocked the cyberpunk reading world and became in high demand due to its screen adaptation: The Peripheral by William Gibson.

You may save much time, usually spent on typing or copy-pasting, and get your bookstagram hashtags generated automatically with HashtagsGenerator .

Enter “theperipheral” without spaces in the search bar and press “Search”.

Ta-da! You’ve got a 30-item pile ready for your post.

One key thing left – is to choose the right time for publishing it. And exclude #books from the list!

Bonus Hack: Choose the Proper Timing for Your Bookstagram Posts

If you normally share your bookstagram content at night, it’s unlikely to get you the biggest audience.

Check the best posting time for Instagram on each day of the week: Monday and Thursday: 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm Tuesday: 8–10 am Wednesday: 9–11 am (11 am is the universal best time) Friday: 2–4 pm Saturday: 8–10 am Sunday: 6–8 pm

best hashtags for book reviews

Considering that people spend an average of 28 minutes per day on Instagram , you’d better pay greater attention to when exactly you publish your book pictures and videos.

This way, you won’t miss the appropriate moment for higher engagement with Instagram users.

Hashtags for Your Wow Bookstagram: Summing Up

Why Do You Need To Use Bookstagram Hashtags?

bookstagram hashtags

Bookstagram hashtags have always been important and have become even more relevant in 2022.

1. To Grow Your Account

If you’re wondering – how can I increase my bookstagram followers?

Then know that bookstagram hashtags are one of the best strategies to grow your account.

Since I am not someone who has a tiktok or a booktube to reach out to more readers, I can vouch for this.

Bookstagram hashtags is my number 1 way of growing a bookstagram account. This is because hashtags allow like-minded people to find you.

My suggestion would be to put 30 hashtags in either the caption or comment section.

There’s no difference whether you put it in the caption or comment section when it comes to engagement. Read more about this in the following section!

2. To Gain Post Ideas

Bookstagram hashtags aren’t just for account visibility and an increase in followers, you can also use it to explore post ideas.

For example, I follow the #smallbookstagrammer hashtag to find more bookstagrammers that are not so popular like myself but have great content.

I also follow #booksandcoffee to get some inspiration for my next bookstagram posts.

So do follow or save relevant hashtags, they might come in handy!

3. To Stay Up To Date With An Author/Fandom

I follow some hashtags of authors that I’ve read as I grew up so that I don’t miss any of their latest books. For example – #sophiekinsella and #juliaquinn.

I also follow #bridgertonnetflix to stay up to date with any Bridgerton related news because I am a huge fangirl.

Bookstagram Hashtag Tips And Tricks

bookstagram hashtags

These are tips I’ve gathered over my past two years being part of the bookstagram community.

1. Use 30 Hashtags.

Don’t waste the opportunity for higher reach!

How many hashtags to use on an instagram post?

There’s a limit of 30 hashtags so make sure you put in 30! A lot of bookstagrammers don’t even use hashtags, that’s closing off doors to being more visible.

Finding it difficult to come up with 30 hashtags? There’s a curated list of bookstagram hashtags in the next section.

2. Use A Mix Of Different Hashtag Sizes.

To increase your reach, use a mix of different hashtag sizes.

Large, medium and smaller hashtags will give you the opportunity to be seen among different types of bookstagrammers from all over the world.

Here are examples of a large, medium and small sized bookstagram hashtags.

bookstagram hashtags

3. Hashtag The Author’s Name.

A lot of bookstagrammers will tag the author of the book in their review but they forget to hashtag the author.

That’s a huge potential to be visible among readers who like the author’s books.

4. Hashtag Book Title And Publisher

I’m sure hashtagging the book title is a common practice among many bookstagrammers.

If the title of the book is too long, do consider searching for a hashtag that are shorter (eg: How The King Of Elfhame Learned To Hate Stories – #htkoelths)

However, a lot of us bookstagrammers forget to hashtag the publishing company. This is also a missed opportunity for exposure.

5. Use Localised Hashtags

Don’t forget to add hashtags from your country, state or community. That’s how you make friends, do buddy reads and more!

I’m a bookstagrammer and book blogger from Malaysia, so I would hashtag the following – #bookstagrammermalaysia #malaysiamembaca #malaysianbookstagrammer

6. Make Sure Your Hashtags Are Existing

One common mistake we bookstagrammer do without realizing is hashtagging hashtags don’t even exist.

This means no one has hashtagged their post with the hashtag before and no one is going to be searching for that hashtag.

Therefore, the hashtag is completely pointless!

bookstagram hashtags

For example, as a fan I might hashtag #bridgertonship because I ship certain characters with certain characters. In reality, that hashtag does not even exist so there’s no point hashtagging it.

5 Batches Of Bookstagram Hashtags To Copy And Paste

bookstagram hashtags

The most annoying part is typing out 30 hashtags for every single bookstagram post. I feel you, I too struggle to think of 30 bookstagram hashtags on the spot.

I’ve curated 5 batches of the best bookstagram hashtags to help you (and me) so that we don’t have to crack our heads right before posting.

Bookstagram Hashtag Generators

If you still feel like you don’t have enough hashtags or the hashtags that you were looking for was not included in this post, you can always try out a bookstagram hashtag generator.

This is not something I would personally do but I do not want to limit your options.

Creating Your Own Bookstagram Hashtag

Is creating your own bookstagram hashtag necessary?

It is not necessary in my opinion, but it is nice to have a personalised hashtag for your audience especially if you are planning to post very frequently.

When you post different types of content frequently, I would suggest for you to hashtag your reviews with a personalised hashtag so that your followers can easily access all your reviews by searching for the hashtag.

A good example would be @sarcasticbrunettes.library ‘s bookstagram posts. She has her own hashtags to keep tabs on her reviews.

I hope these bookstagram hashtags help you in not just growing your bookstagram account but also help you save time and energy thinking of hashtags for every single post. Bookmark this article so you always have hashtags ready-to-go!

In the following sections, we will delve into the practical ways to utilize book-related hashtags on Instagram and TikTok.

We will discuss how to navigate this digital landscape and maximise the reach of your posts using these platforms’ popular tagging systems.

We’ll cover basics, advanced tactics, and even tackle the most frequently asked questions about hashtags.

So, whether you’re a personal book enthusiast or a book business trying to gain more visibility, this guide could be of great help to you.

Let’s jump right into it!

How To Effectively Use Books Hashtags?

By effectively using trendy book-related hashtags , you can easily gain visibility among individuals who share similar interests.

While Instagram and TikTok are vastly different platforms, they both prioritize posts with the most relevant hashtags .

Therefore, using popular book hashtags will give your posts more chances of reaching a broad audience.

Hashtags like #bookstagram, #bookworm, or #booklover are consistently popular on both apps.

Keeping an eye on trending book hashtags and using them in your posts, can significantly increase your engagement rates.

In the quickly evolving world of social media, being aware of and hopping onto trends can be beneficial for staying relevant and gaining followers.

Note that using relevant and trendy book-related hashtags increases the chances of your post being seen by people who are genuinely interested in books.

This approach can not only increase your views, likes, and comments but also potentially lead to more meaningful interactions and connections .

As the world of literature moves forward, new book trends continue to emerge which can inform your hashtag strategy.

Whether it’s the latest #YA (young adult) sensation, a trendy #selfhelp book, or the resurgence of certain #classics, always keep your hashtags up-to-date and reflective of current trends in the book industry.

Simply put, the right hashtags can make or break your social media presence.

With the proper use of book-related hashtags, you can easily reach out to fellow book lovers and set yourself apart as a notable profile to follow for book recommendations, reviews, and discussions.

If you’re an author, publisher, or book enthusiast wanting to enhance engagement on your posts, trendy and popular book hashtags are a must-add in your captions.

By doing so, this can optimise your visibility and influence on these platforms and in the broader online book community.

Get creative and connect with your audience using trendy book-related hashtags!

When posting about a book on Instagram and TikTok , use the strategy of tagging the book’s authors and publishers.

This is an excellent way to receive more visibility for your posts as these tagged accounts might see, like, or even share your post.

By tagging publishers, you offer them free promotion, which they usually appreciate and might return in the form of a repost or a shoutout in their story or feed.

Keep in mind, however, that excessive tagging can be seen as spammy, so only tag people who are directly connected with the book you’re discussing.

It’s also worth looking into any specific hashtags that the author or publisher might be using for book promotions and include those in your posts to increase your visibility.

Account mentioning along with hashtagging is a powerful way of book promotion.

Engaging with authors and publishers by tagging them in your posts not only boosts your visibility but also builds relationships within the book community.

Researching the authors and publishers is beneficial as it offers deeper insights into their promotional strategies which you can emulate or get inspired from.

When you tag authors, it shows that you respect their work and value their contribution to the literary world .

This small action can help you to develop an online relationship with these writers, allowing you to connect on a more personal level.

In addition to tagging those directly involved with a book, consider tagging other relevant accounts for example, book reviewers, book clubs, or other book influencers .

Tagging allows you to take part in a broader literary conversation , interact with people who have similar reading interests, and build your online presence.

When done correctly, tagging can significantly increase your engagement, visibility, and the opportunity to connect with the greater book community .

Through strategic tagging, you can effectively make your posts more discoverable and increase your chances of being featured on Instagram’s ‘Explore’ page or Tiktok’s ‘For You’ page.

To sum up, smart and respectful tagging of authors and publishers is a proven way for your posts to get more engagement and visibility .

So, make sure to research, identify and tag relevant authors and publishers in your posts for maximum impact and growth.

One key aspect of making your book content stand out on social media platforms like Instagram and Tiktok is to use genre-specific hashtags .

These tags not only group your post with similar books within a specific genre but also direct it towards a self-selected audience that is already keenly interested in that genre.

For example, if you’re posting about a new crime thriller you read, including hashtags like #CrimeThrillerBooks, #MysteryNovels, or #DetectiveStories would connect your post with potential readers who enjoy such types of novels.

The list of genre-specific hashtags is virtually endless, from #RomanceNovels, #SciFiBooks, #FantasyLiterature, to #HistoricalFiction and beyond.

It’s pivotal to remember that the more specific your hashtag is, the more targeted your audience will be.

This, in turn, would mean a higher chance of interaction with your post as it’s appearing on feeds of those truly interested in that niche genre.

And remember, the combined use of general book-related hashtags and genre-specific ones often works best for visibility and reach.

Keep an eye on the trending genre-specific hashtags in the book community – something like #YALit (Young Adult Literature) could be trending due to a new release or author event.

Take advantage of these trends, and highlight books from your collection that fit the genre, riding the wave of momentum these popular hashtags generate.

Also, pay close attention to sub-genres and cross-genres as they can provide you with unique hashtags such as #ParanormalRomance or #SciFiMystery.

It’s also worth checking the kind of content posted under these hashtags to ensure your post is indeed a good fit .

Using irrelevant or misleading hashtags might attract the wrong audience, cause disinterest, or even report your content.

Using book club hashtags on Instagram and TikTok is a fantastic way to cultivate an online community of book enthusiasts.

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are widely used to share and engage with likeminded individuals on a global platform.

This digital globe offers a vast resource of book clubs that you can access with the right hashtags.

When you’re seeking out these book clubs, locate their specific hashtags as they often have their own set of unique hashtags used by their members.

Finding and using these specific book club hashtags can act as your golden key into these book-loving communities.

Building relationships with these online book clubs can be beneficial for both personal interest and business.

By joining the online conversation, you become part of a community that shares insightful book reviews, recommendations, and discusses various literary topics.

Participating in these discussions provides exposure and allows you to establish your online presence.

You can use general book club hashtags such as #bookclub or #bookgroup, as well as hashtags specific to the book you’re discussing.

This will allow individuals who are interested in the same books to find your posts, and potentially connect with you.

Furthermore, if you’re an author or publisher, using these hashtags offers you the chance to reach your target audience directly and engage in personal interactions.

Hashtags like #bookclubpick or #bookclubread can help you identify which books are currently being discussed in different clubs.

Another great aspect of book club hashtags is that they often hold virtual read-alongs and utilize a specific hashtag for the event.

Partaking in these events through the right hashtag not only fosters a sense of community, but also broadens your scope of reading and introduces you to books you might not have discovered otherwise.

Overall, connecting with book clubs using hashtags can serve as a vehicle towards deeper engagement, fresh reads, and new network opportunities in the ever-expanding world of Instagram and TikTok book lovers.

Promoting book reviews with hashtags is a brilliant way to boost engagement on your Instagram and TikTok posts.

It’s essentially about creating an online conversation around your book review , drawing in other readers, and sparking a discussion.

By using a unique and relevant hashtag for your book review, such as #BookReview or #BookLoversReview, you’ll be able to reach a larger audience .

Think out of the box, and create your special review-centered hashtag to stand out among countless reviews.

It might take a while to build a following, but once your hashtag catches on, it could become a popular place for readers to discuss their thoughts on your reviewed books.

This strategy could also attract the attention of authors and publishers who might be interested in featuring your reviews .

Remember that consistency is key, use the same hashtag on your book reviews posts to build a visible online presence.

Instagram and TikTok are both visual platforms, so it’s worth supplementing your reviews with eye-catching images or videos of the books you’re discussing.

If you’ve got a physical copy of the book, you could include a few shots of the cover or some aesthetically pleasing ‘bookstagram’ style photographs.

If you’re reviewing an eBook, see if you can source some promotional images or design your catchy graphics .

Using emojis in your hashtags might not be the best idea as it can make it harder for people to find and follow your hashtags.

Try to keep your main focus on your chosen hashtags in line with book reviews.

Also, consider collaborating with other book reviewers and host fun activities like ‘book review swaps’ where you review each other’s book recommendations.

Just make sure that your hashtags are easily discoverable, and don’t forget to engage with the comments on your book review posts to build a community of readers.

Bottom line: Book review hashtags are a valuable tool in your arsenal as a book influencer and can take your book discussions and recommendations to new heights.

When sharing images of your tidy or creatively arranged bookshelf on Instagram and Tiktok , it can be useful to add book-themed hashtags to your posts.

This allows you to reach not only people interested in reading, but also those who enjoy bookshelf aesthetics and the organization or decoration of book collections.

Some trending hashtags related to bookshelf decor include #Bookshelfie, #BookshelfDecor and #ShelfStyling.

By examining your shelf, you will be able to find other hashtags related to your specific styling, like #ColorCodedBooks, if your books are arranged by their cover color, for example.

Don’t be shy about adding a mixture of popular and less-used hashtags to your posts.

You might also consider incorporating location-specific hashtags to speak to a particular geographic community.

For book lovers with travel preferences, a clever use of hashtags like #BookshelvesAroundTheWorld could attract a fascinating and committed niche audience.

Digitally savvy book collectors looking for inspiration to create their personal space can easily find your posts with appropriate hashtags.

Adding descriptive hashtags about the layout and ambiance of your bookshelf can also cater to a wider audience of home decorators, architects, and interior designers.

This creative way of using hashtags can maximize your audience by targeting multiple demographics interested in books, stylistic expression, and interior design.

You can also find bookshelf styling challenges to participate in, for instance, #FallForBookstagram, where Instagram users show off their fall-themed bookshelf arrangements.

Participating in challenges like these not only increases your visibility, but also helps establish community ties amongst fellow book lovers.

Keep an eye on trending hashtags and creatively incorporate them into your bookshelf aesthetics posts to continue engaging with your audience.

Remember, Instagram and Tiktok hashtags are not just about gaining followers, they are also ways to find your own inspiration and connect with like-minded book lovers.

Beautiful bookshelves make attractive visual content and when paired with appropriate hashtags, they can become an effective way to share your love for books and engage with fellow enthusiasts.

So, start curating your creative book shelves and leverage these hashtags to make the most out of your Instagram and Tiktok book posts.

As an avid book lover using social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, integrating travel-related posts with your book content can create an immersive, story-driven experience for your followers.

The key to this method is tagging book locations , either real places mentioned within the books you read or places that inspired the book’s setting.

This can be achieved by using a location-specific hashtag or directly tagging the location on your post.

For instance, if you’re reading a book set in Paris, you could use hashtags like #LitTravel, #ParisInThePages , or #BookishWanderlust .

You could also tag popular landmarks in your post, such as the Eiffel Tower, or locations known for their literary significance like Shakespeare and Company bookstore.

Tagging book locations in your posts not only ties your content to a specific geographical location, but it also connects your posts to a larger community of booklovers and travelers looking for their next literary adventure.

This strategy allows you to effectively tap into the community of book-inspired travelers as well as casual tourists looking to add a touch of literature to their journey.

Moreover, it’s a fantastic way to give your posts an extra layer of meaning and possibility, opening the way for engaging discussions about the author’s inspiration or how accurate the book’s representation of the area is.

This type of content can also spark engagement amongst your followers, encouraging them to share their own bookish travel experiences and recommendations in the comments.

It is also an effective way to collaborate with travel bloggers or influencers, broadening your reach and audience on these platforms.

Should you visit any of these places personally, don’t forget to take a snapshot with the book and the location in the background to create a compelling visual narrative that complements your hashtag strategy.

Similarly, you can recreate or interpret particular book scenes at these locations and tag them accordingly, bringing literature to life while offering your followers a new and exciting interactive experience.

Remember, it’s always vital that you maintain the authenticity and genuine love for the books that you’re featuring.

So next time you pick up a book and journey through its pages, consider tagging its locations on Instagram or TikTok and watch as your followers join in on the adventure.

One of the most effective ways to capture the attention of book lovers on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok is by highlighting unique features of books through hashtags.

Unique book features can refer to anything distinct about a book such as its cover design, illustrations, unusual chapter layouts, or even its engraved spine details.

Creating a hashtag that captures these peculiarities not only brings your post to the limelight, but it also becomes a great tool for engagement as users may become curious about the featured elements.

The first step to doing this is to keenly observe the book and identify any unique features it has.

Once you’ve spotted some distinctive characteristics, think about how best you can demonstrate these features on Instagram or TikTok .

Remember, you want to create a post that induces curiosity in viewers, hence, choose a perspective or angle that seems offbeat yet attractive.

Next, you should create a hashtag that is descriptive of this unique element.

The hashtag should ideally be short, catchy and clearly point to the specific feature you’re trying to highlight.

For instance, for a book with a glow-in-the-dark cover, you could use the hashtag #GlowingBookCover.

Ensure that the hashtag you create is book specific but not too obscure such that it’s hard for users to understand what you’re trying to portray.

Using this strategy, you’re not only promoting the book in question, but also opening up room for other bibliophiles to share their books with similar unique features using your hashtag – causing a trickle effect that could boost your reach.

Apart from Instagram and TikTok, you can also use this strategy on other platforms such as Twitter or Facebook to widen your audience scope.

Most importantly, remember to be authentic in your posts.

The more real and genuine you are, the higher the chances of your audience relating with you and ultimately engaging with your posts.

Do not forget to use other relevant hashtags along with your unique feature hashtag for the best results.

Create a hashtag that captures these peculiarities not only brings your post to the limelight, but it also becomes a great tool for engagement as users may become curious about the featured elements.

Virtual book tours have become increasingly popular in the age of social distancing, and they provide an excellent opportunity for authors and readers to connect across geographic boundaries.

The success of such an event can be significantly boosted through the strategic use of hashtags.

By having an official hashtag for your virtual book tour , you can create a separate space on Instagram and TikTok where all related content can be found easily.

This also encourages your audience to use the same hashtag when they share their thoughts or digital photos about the book and the tour, creating a sense of community.

Moreover, you can also use wider hashtags related to virtual book tours or online readings like #VirtualBookTour, #OnlineReading, or the genre-specific variants like #RomanceBookTour.

This can help your event get discovered by those who may not be aware of your specific tour hashtag but are generally interested in online book events.

Include your tour hashtag in your promotional posts, daily reminders, and any live content you may be hosting.

Combining the tour-specific hashtag with more general ones like #newbook #bookstagram or #authorsofinstagram can further increase your visibility.

If you’re doing a multi-day event, consider creating a unique hashtag for each day or each individual author’s session.

This can help attendees track the event’s progression and also provides an easy way to find content from a specific session.

Variation in your hashtags can keep your content fresh and appealing, but remember consistency is key, especially when promoting a multi-day event.

The use of hashtags for virtual book tours not only promotes your event but also facilitates meaningful interaction

In the virtual space where face to face interaction is absent, these hashtags can act as a virtual meeting place, allowing attendees to share their views and experiences

Remember to track the performance of your hashtags periodically not only to measure your event’s reach but also to refine your hashtag strategy for upcoming events.

If done rightly, the use of hashtags for virtual book tours can do wonders in terms of promotions, engagement, and creating a strong virtual community around your book.

Using hashtags effectively on Instagram can help to significantly extend your reach and engagement levels.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to use relevant hashtags .

If you’re posting a picture of a book, for instance, using some of the prevalent book-related hashtags such as #bookstagram, #booklover or #bibliophile can help your post to gain visibility among people interested in books.

While it might be tempting to go for the hashtags with the most posts, targeting smaller, niche hashtags can often be more effective.

When your post is surrounded by less competition, it has a higher chance of standing out and attracting engagement.

Another tip is to mix both popular and less popular hashtags .

Mixing both popular and less popular hashtags gives your post the best chance of being seen by a varied audience.

It’s also crucial to remember that Instagram allows a maximum of 30 hashtags per post.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should necessarily be using all 30 – that could come across as spammy .

In fact, data suggests that posts with between 5 and 9 hashtags perform the best.

Placement can also have an impact on how your hashtags perform.

While many people opt to include hashtags in the comments section in order to keep the caption clean, it’s actually better to include them in the main caption .

The reason for this is that Instagram’s algorithm reads the caption before the comments .

Finally, remember that using the same hashtags on every post can make your account appear as spam to Instagram’s algorithm.

Instead, try to use a varied mix of hashtags on each post, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new hashtags to see what works for your content and your audience.

All in all, while hashtags are a powerful tool for growing your Instagram account, it’s important to use them wisely.

If done correctly, using the right hashtags can help your posts to reach a wider audience, engage with your followers, and ultimately grow your account .

If you’re an author or a book lover looking to use TikTok to share your love for books, using relevant and popular hashtags can help increase your video views.

One of the most popular hashtags in the literary world on TikTok is #BookTok . This hashtag is commonly used by book lovers to share book reviews, recommendations, and hauls.

Other popular book-related hashtags include #BookReview, #BookRecommendations, #BookHaul, and #BookLover. These hashtags are effective in drawing a targeted audience interested in books.

Incorporating popular general hashtags that aren’t necessarily book-related can also help to increase your TikTok video views. Hashtags such as #FYP (For You Page), #Trending, #Viral and #TikTok are widely used to increase visibility.

It’s essential to note that the use of relevant hashtags is more important than just using popular ones. The TikTok algorithm favors content that is relevant to the audience, so if you’re posting about books, stick to book-related hashtags.

Using relevant and trending hashtags in combination with book-specific ones can indeed lead to an increase in video views on TikTok.

In addition to using popular hashtags, creating unique hashtags related to your content or brand can help create a niche community within TikTok for your followers.

This also gives your followers a way to engage with your content and even create user-generated content under your unique hashtag.

Be aware that TikTok also has a ruthless algorithm . If your content doesn’t resonate with users, your videos may not garner the views you’re expecting, regardless of how trendy the hashtags are.

To ensure your hashtags yield results, ensure your content is high-quality , engaging, and relevant to the TikTok audience.

Remember to check trending pages to stay on top of which hashtags are currently popular and relevant to your content.

The optimal number of hashtags to use on TikTok is believed to be around 3 to 5 – maintain this count to keep your caption clean and not overstuffed.

Lastly, keep in mind that while hashtags are a powerful tool for increasing visibility and engagement, they aren’t the sole determiner of success. Your content must also be engaging, authentic, and valuable in order to attract and retain viewers.

Experiment with different hashtags, pay attention to trends and performance , and maintain your unique voice in order to effectively increase your video views on TikTok.

The role of hashtags within Instagram’s search algorithm has been a long-standing topic of discussion among users and digital marketers.

Essentially, hashtags are used on Instagram to categorize content, making it easier for users to discover posts related to their interests.

The use of relevant hashtags on your posts can increase their visibility, as they can appear in the search results for that particular hashtag.

Instagram’s search algorithm prioritizes posts that include specific and relevant hashtags, improving their discoverability and reach.

Users searching or following specific hashtags would thus see your posts appearing in their feed or search results, increasing your potential audience.

With Instagram’s search algorithm, popularity isn’t the only factor taken into account. Relevance and timeliness of the posts also play a crucial role.

This mechanism emphasises on hashtags , as they are an easy and explicit way of marking the relevance of a post.

Instagram’s algorithm also looks at the engagement a post gets and it notably includes likes, comments, share and even the time that users spent viewing your post.

In this sense, if many people engage with your post soon after it’s shared, Instagram’s algorithm will take that as a sign that your post is interesting, and it will be more likely to appear in searches.

However, Instagram penalizes users who use irrelevant or banned hashtags , causing their posts to be suppressed or even removed.

On Instagram, it’s recommended to use a mix of trending, industry-specific, and branded hashtags to boost post visibility and engagement.

Utilising Instagram hashtags effectively will undoubtedly increase the visibility of your posts and help you grow your online presence.

However, when it comes to using books-related hashtags, it’s imperative to know your audience and their preferences .

Understand the types of books-related content that resonate with your audience and what they are interested in.

To summarize, Instagram’s search algorithm does consider hashtags as a significant factor towards the visibility and popularity of your posts.

Understanding the number of hashtags to use on TikTok can become a game-changer in increasing your video views and building a strong social media presence.

Unlike Instagram, where you can use up to 30 hashtags, TikTok allows users to include only a maximum of #100 characters worth of hashtags.

Seeing this limitation, you could think that you can use as many hashtags as you please, as long as they fit within the 100 characters limit.

But research has found that the optimal number of hashtags on TikTok is three to five .

TikTok’s algorithm tends to favor this number of hashtags.

Using too many hashtags might be perceived as spam and might not benefit your content’s visibility as you had hoped.

Therefore, carefully selecting three to five relevant hashtags is a better alternative than stuffing your caption with too many hashtags.

Also, make sure that every hashtag you use is relevant to your video content .

The importance of relevant hashtags can not be overstressed, using irrelevant hashtags can be counterproductive.

Use hashtags that align with your content and that way your video will get in front of people that are likely to be interested in it.

It’s also efficient to make use of #FYP (For You Page) and other popular and trending hashtags, you can try to include them in your content.

The optimal number of hashtags on TikTok is three to five

However, it’s crucial to use them wisely , you should only incorporate popular and trending hashtags that are relevant to your content .

Irrelevant overuse of popular hashtags does not guarantee any significant increase in views or user engagement.

The ultimate goal is to create captivating content that resonates with your intended audience and then optimize it with the suitable hashtags.

Mastering the art of using the right number of relevant hashtags on TikTok is one of the most significant steps towards achieving TikTok success .

For authors, influencers, and aspiring writers, understanding the most popular hashtags used on Instagram in relation to books can significantly increase their reach and engagement

Hashtags like #BookReview and #Bookish are also commonly used in the book community.

These hashtags are ideal for those posting reviews, opinions, or merely sharing their love for all things bookish.

For individual genres, hashtags such as #FantasyBooks , #CrimeThrillers , and #RomanceNovels can be seen trending frequently.

Thus, moulding your hashtags based on your specific content can help reach niche groups.

For book quotes and literary musings, hashtags like #BookQuotes and #LiteraryQuotes are quite popular.

These hashtags often used by booklovers to share their favourite quotations or powerful exchanges from their reads.

Remember, using a blend of popular and specific hashtags can greatly enhance your visibility and follower interaction on Instagram’s book community.

Engagement with trending tags like #BookRecommendations and #TBR (To Be Read) can also be a strategic way to expand your audience.

#BookRecommendations is used when suggesting a book to the community, while #TBR is for posts showcasing what’s in your reading queue.

Monitoring and adapting to hashtag trends and community preferences is a crucial aspect of optimising your Instagram book content.

In essence, selecting the right hashtags can make a big difference in the success and visibility of your posts on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

200 Best Instagram Hashtags for Authors

BEST INSTAGRAM HASHTAGS FOR WRITERS | Woman with phone, city lights | How to Promote a Book on Instagram #how to be a bookstagrammer #instagram bio for authors #instagram for authors #instagram puzzle feed #instagram stories for authors #social media for writers

Hey there! Even though this list is called “best Instagram hashtags for authors,” the ones that are best for you will depend on who you are and what you write. The list will probably make you think of other writing hashtags, too.

I wanted to write this post because I’m always interested in the benefits of social media for writers. Besides, I’ve been using Instagram a lot more lately. I’m doing my one-post-a-day-for-a-year challenge—it’s one of my 101 Life Goals . (If you want to check out my Instagram, click here. )

One thing I’ve realized is that I was using a lot less hashtags than most Instagram users…maybe two or three at most, when Instagram allows for thirty! Hashtags are usually how other users come across your posts, so I’ve started to use them a lot more.

I’m including a mix of big, popular hashtags and smaller niche hashtags. On the one hand, you may want to reach a lot of people with your posts…but on the other, your post may get lost when you choose a huge hashtag, and some niche hashtags may reach people who are more specifically interested in your kind of thing!

Although some of these seem simple, it can be hard to think of a bunch of hashtags in the moment. Pin or bookmark this list, and you’ll have it for future reference!

Best Viral And Popular Book Hashtags For Instagram! 🚀

  • ⏳ [read_meter]

When it comes to Instagram, you have to make hashtags your buddy. That’s how you make the Instagram algorithm get along with your content. You can create the best content out there, but if you aren’t optimizing your content, no matter how much effort you put into creating it, it won’t show in your numbers. Now, there are many theories about using hashtags on Instagram. Some believe they work, and some don’t. I have gotten great results from using hashtags with my posts and also on my Instagram stories.

To understand this better, it’s essential to see Instagram for what it is nowadays. Instagram started as a social media platform, but slowly it is turning into a search engine and an online marketplace. Therefore, optimizing your content using essential keywords and hashtags enables your content to attain higher reach and engagement. You can try using them on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. But always remember, your content is the key, don’t let hashtags override them. Keep them limited and targeted.

Best Instagram Hashtags For Book Lovers! #

Woman Holding Sheet Of Paper With Hashtag Sign On White Background

Book-related content on Instagram has grown massively in the last few years. Readers can find book recommendations, book reviews, reading tips, etc., on Instagram. So, if you are a content creator, too, you can use these viral book hashtags to gain traction on your posts. You can also follow these hashtags on Instagram and consume unique book-related content for inspiration.

Best Matt Haig Books To Read

#Book  – You can use up to 30 hashtags below each of your posts. Since hashtags make your content discoverable, you must use as many relevant hashtags. ‘Relevant’ is a key term here. Using unnecessary hashtags that have no relevance to your content may harm your posts. Make sure to use a bunch of generic hashtags that are relevant to your posts. #book is a generic hashtag that has 54.7 million posts under it as I am typing this. The hashtag ‘books’ has 52.2 Million posts. Many users follow these hashtags; hence using these below your posts will help your content get traction.

#Booklover  –   This is another excellent hashtag to go along with your book posts. It’s generic and has 22.9 Million posts under its umbrella. The best part of such generic hashtags is using them below all of your book-related posts. If there is a mention of books in your posts, then you can use these hashtags as they are highly relevant for such content.

#Bookworm  – This is one of my most favorite hashtags on Instagram. I happen to discover unique bookish content with the help of this hashtag. From artistic flat-lay book pictures to funny and relatable bookish memes, you will find everything with this hashtag. With 22.4 Million posts, #bookworm is a great keyword to get traffic to your posts. I highly recommend using this one with your posts.

#Bookstagrammer  –   There are 10 Million posts under the bookstagrammer hashtag, which is quite massive. Bookstagram is a term used for a book lover’s Instagram handle that features artistic book pictures. Thus, if you are a bookstagrammer or want other bookstagrammers to discover your posts, then use this hashtag in your posts. You can also add the term bookstagrammer to your Instagram bio. Adding keywords on your niche in your bio optimizes your account for more followers.

#Booknerd  –   This is another excellent generic hashtag with 11.4 Million posts. You can use this hashtag below all your book-related posts, as this will fit with everything, whether it’s a review, recommendation, rant, or anything else.

#Bookaddict  – With a whopping 10.2 Million posts under its umbrella, #bookaddict is a fantastic hashtag to gain traction on your posts. It’s generic and can be used with multiple posts. If you follow this hashtag on Instagram, you will see plenty of posts on bookshelves, book reviews, book recommendations, etc. Thus, it’s a very wholesome hashtag that you can easily use with all your bookish posts.

#Bookphotography  –   Bookstagram is all about posting artistic book pictures. Clicking book pictures based on themes and particular aesthetics makes your posts stand out and reflects your photographs’ personality. If you are into such posts, then using this hashtag will be helpful. There are 7 Million posts under this hashtag. People who want to see artistic book pictures will be able to discover your posts via this hashtag. So, don’t miss out on this one.

#Bookblogger  –   There are 5 Million posts on Instagram using this hashtag. It’s a must-use hashtag for book bloggers. People who are trying to explore new book bloggers will search for this hashtag. You wouldn’t want to miss out on getting new followers, so make sure to use this hashtag below all your bookish posts.

#Bookcommunity  –   The book community on Instagram is massive, and it makes me so happy. The bigger the community, the better it is for fellow community members. There are 3.3 Million posts under the umbrella of this hashtag, making it indispensable. Some other fantastic hashtags to grow your audience are #bookobsessed, #bookclub, #bookgram, #booklovers, #bookporn, #bookish, booklove, booklife, #booksofinstagram, #booknerdigans.

#Bookquotes  –   Now, this one is again a fantastic hashtag if you share quotations from a book. #bookquotes is used with snaps of quotes from books. It can also be used if the quotation(s) is/are shared in the post’s caption. Nonetheless, this hashtag is a specific one and should only be used along with content based on quotes. Readers love to read passages on Instagram, and this hashtag makes it easier for them to discover quotes. However, if you are using this hashtag without sharing quotes in your posts, you may receive backlash in the comments. Don’t just use a hashtag because it performs well. If it doesn’t go with your content, then don’t use it. Relevant hashtags will accelerate your account’s growth.

#Bookshelf  –   Bookshelf is one of my most favorite hashtags on Instagram. You will find so many fantastic bookshelf pictures for inspiration. From small bedroom bookshelves to big library bookshelves, you will find unlimited ideas to set up your bookshelf. This is not a generic hashtag, so make sure you aren’t adding this to all of your posts. If there is a bookshelf in your post or a mention of a bookshelf in your caption, only then add it to your list of hashtags. There are 6.3 Million posts under this hashtag. Thus, it will bring traffic to your posts as well.

#Bookrecommendations  –   Whenever I am looking for a fresh dose of book recommendations, I quickly follow posts under this hashtag on Instagram. So, if you share a post with your book recommendations, feel free to add this hashtag in the caption. With 1.2 Million posts, #bookrecommendations is an excellent source of Instagram traffic.

#Bookreview  –   This one has 3.3 Million posts! It’s a great hashtag that goes along with all your book review posts. Book review and Book recommendations hashtags get along really well, so you can use both these hashtags in your posts. They are sort of complimentary. Some other hashtags in the same line are #bookreviewer, #bookrec, #bookreader, #bookofthemonth, #bookoftheyear, #booksofig, etc. You can also write the book’s name, author’s name, book’s genre as hashtags with your posts.

#Tbr  –   Tbr is the short form for ‘to-be-read. Readers use this abbreviation a lot; thus, it makes for a great hashtag to bring traction to your posts. Usually, you will find pictures of a stack of books or book mails with a detailed caption about them. There are 1.8 Million posts under this hashtag.

#Bookstagramindia  –   The simple math around Instagram hashtags is balance. Hashtags with more than a million posts are extremely competitive. Therefore, it’s important to use less competitive hashtags as well. #bookstagramindia is one such particular hashtag. Readers who try to discover Indian bookstagrammers, use this hashtag. Since this hashtag is not as competitive as listed previously, it will be easier for you to get discovered. Some other less competitive hashtags with less than million posts are #booksandcoffee, #bookhoarder, #bookaremagic, #bookstagramfeatures, #bookpile, #booknerds, #booksofinsta, #bookaesthetics, #booksworthreading.

Hashtags for Instagram Stories! #

The Instagram algorithm keeps changing, and the best way to be on top of your game is to keep trying new ways to optimize your content on Instagram. Instagram Stories get way more views than your regular grid posts. Thus, if you want to grow your following, try to post more Instagram Stories with relevant hashtags. For every Instagram story, you can use up to ten hashtags.

#Nowreading  –   I have been using this hashtag for my Instagram stories, and I have seen excellent results. You can click a quick snap of the book you are reading and add it to your story along with this hashtag. You will see many new story views within hours of your story upload. Adding Instagram polls to your story will also invite engagement from the new viewers. So, make sure you are using all these complimentary story elements.

#Currentread or #Currentlyreading  –   These hashtags are again pretty similar to the previous one. Try to add 4 to 5 hashtags from the same family and see the magic happen.

#Currentreadingsituation  –   This is again a great hashtag for your bookish Instagram Stories. Some other hashtags to escalate your story views are #currentreadselfie, #currentreadandcoffee, #currentreadandtea, #currentreading.

NetGalley’s Guide to Who to Tag in Book Reviews

Bookish

NetGalley members love to share their reviews on their bookish social media platforms. There are many strategies that readers can use on those platforms to help their reviews reach the intended audience, and tagging is one of the most vital! Here we’re sharing who you should be tagging in your reviews and other helpful tagging tips.

Familiarize yourself with which social platforms allow tagging If you’re posting your review to a social media platform (X, Instagram, TikTok, etc), then you have the option to utilize tags in reviews by using the @ symbol followed by a user’s handle.

There are also places where NetGalley members leave reviews that don’t have a tagging feature—such as review websites (such as Goodreads, The StoryGraph, etc) or consumer sites (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc).

Let’s take a closer look at who to tag and why.

Tag NetGalley Whether you’re sharing your excitement over being approved or you’re sharing your review, we want to hear about it! It’s not only fun to see what books our members are reading, but it also helps to give us a sense of the Categories, formats, and publishers you love. You can find us under the handle @NetGalley on X , Facebook , Instagram , and TikTok .

Tag the publisher Publishers enjoy seeing members’ social posts and reviews about the books they’ve provided access to. The easiest way to find a publisher’s social media handles is to go to their publisher page on NetGalley and look at the “Find Them Online” box in the left column. Like with NetGalley, you can tag the publisher both when sharing the news that you were approved and when sharing your review.

What to consider before tagging an author Whether or not you should tag an author in your review isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. Here are a few common questions we see in regards to when to tag the author.

Why do some authors prefer not to be tagged? There are a multitude of reasons why authors do not want to be tagged in reviews on social media. First, reviews are meant for readers. They are intended to help readers decide whether a book is right for them or the community they represent. Tagging an author into a post that may be critical of their work, invites them into a conversation that should be focused on readers and puts the author in an awkward position.

Second, authors deserve the right to protect and preserve their mental health. Authors receive official critiques through their publishing team. Like everyone, they deserve a social media experience where they can enjoy connecting with peers and followers, rather than being notified every time a reader does not like their work.

Can I tag the author if I believe my feedback is valuable to them? Reviewer feedback is incredibly valuable! It’s vital to other readers, who should always be your first priority in review writing, and it is valuable to publishers.

Authors have teams that assist them in the editing of their books and those teams have systems in place when it comes to looking at and sharing outside feedback. When you tag the publisher, you’ve alerted that team to your review. From there the publisher is able to make the best decision for their imprint and their author in regards to what they do with your feedback.

Doesn’t my tag help my followers find the author more easily? We do love making readers’ lives easier, but in this case, it’s important to think of the author first. Readers can save your post, screenshot it, or easily search the author’s name to find out more, if they would like to.

I’ve heard you can tag authors in good reviews. Can I tag them then? If you are going to tag an author in your review, the best rule of thumb is for it to be a glowing review that does not contain any critique or criticism.

But I love engaging with my favorite authors online. Us too! Is there anything more fun than a beloved author commenting on one of your posts or giving you a follow?

The truth is that authors being inundated with notifications that range from politely critical to downright mean has led many authors to make choices necessary for their mental health such as not engaging at all with their notifications, switching their account to one that only posts updates of their upcoming books, or turning off the tagging feature completely. Being cautious of when you’re tagging authors helps to ensure the experience is a positive one for all!

I’m just so excited I got approved! Can I tag the author to tell them? If you’re posting to say that you were approved for a book and cannot wait to dive in, tagging the book’s author can be a nice way to show that you’re eager to read their work.

Should I tag audiobook narrators? This is a great question! When it comes to narrators, the same rules above for authors apply.

Being thoughtful about when you tag authors and narrators helps make bookish social media spaces safer and more engaging for everyone!

Cross-check before posting Handles on social media platforms are entirely unique. Most publishers and authors use the same exact handle across all of their platforms, but occasionally there will be differences. Especially if you’re posting your review to multiple platforms, make sure you’re using the correct tag for that platform.

Another instance where a publisher (NetGalley included) may have different handles, is if they operate in multiple countries. Doing a little homework will help ensure that you’re tagging the correct account.

Determine the correct imprint For example, on NetGalley “Avon and Harper Voyager” are listed as a single publisher. These are two separate imprints focusing on different genres. You do not need to tag both in your reviews. Instead, look at the title details page to see the appropriate imprint listed beside their publisher name.

best hashtags for book reviews

Fit tags into the disclosure For the sake of transparency, readers are encouraged to disclose if the book they’re reviewing was gifted to them. It’s easy to combine this with your NetGalley and publisher tag by including a line such as: “Thank you (name of publishing company) for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.”

Utilize hashtags Don’t forget that hashtags are another fantastic way of helping your post reach its intended audience. Hashtags for the book’s title, author, genre, and more can be helpful for both you and your followers looking to engage with similar content. Here’s more about how to best use hashtags !

Kelly Gallucci

Kelly Gallucci is the Executive Editor of We Are Bookish, where she oversees the editorial content, offers book recommendations, and interviews authors and NetGalley members. When she's not working, Kelly can be found color coordinating her bookshelves, eating Chipotle, and watching way too many baking shows.

This was extremely helpful! Especially about when and when not to, tag authors. Thank you Annette Geiss

Thanks for the concise and helpful advice, Kelly. In Instagram, do you recommend tagging publishers in the comments (which shows up in their notifications) or in the picture (which sends them a DM), or both? Thanks!

That’s a great question! There are definitely pros and cons to each, and publishers will have different opinions about what is the most helpful for them.

The pro of tagging in a photo is that it’ll appear on that publishers tagged page, which makes it easier for other readers to discover. But if you’re tagging a larger account, those kinds of tags can sometimes get lost in their DMs.

Tagging a publisher in the caption of your photo can mean that the notification is easier for them to find in their notifications list, and it ensures they aren’t receiving notifications for every comment on your post (which happens if you tag them in the photo). But you will lose out on the discoverability of your photo showing up in their tagged photos.

Truly it all comes down to your personal preference. I don’t think you can go wrong either way (or as you mentioned, doing both!).

Very helpful, thanks!

Thank you for this wonderfully informative post. I’ve only recently started using Instagram and this has helped me a lot.

The 31 Most Popular Hashtags For Book Lovers

But in case you don’t spend a lot of time on social media (and hey, we READ, not all of us are sitting around on social media all day, so don’t judge!), a hashtag is:

On Twitter , the pound sign (or hash) turns any word or group of words that directly follow it into a searchable link. This allows you to organize content and track discussion topics based on those keywords. So, if you wanted to post about the Breaking Bad finale, you would include #BreakingBad in your tweet to join the conversation. Click on a hashtag to see all the posts that mention the subject in real time. ( Mashable )

In short, as explained in the video below, a hashtag allows us to “filter down the overflow of online content and find people who share the same interest as you .”

Is there any book hashtag etiquette you need to know about?

When hashtagging, it’s best to just use common sense. In other words, don’t be freakin’ annoying. Instagram allows you to put up to 30 hashtags per post! But do you need to use them all? Maybe not… OK. Probably not. Definitely not.

Hashtags

Twitter discourages “abuse” of hashtags, and while there are no limits that we could find for hashtagging on the other platforms, it’s safe to assume that most people like a targeted approach rather than hashtag spamming. So use prudently and read up on hashtag etiquette .

Now that you know how awesomely useful hashtags are, here are the best ones out there for readers and book lovers.

  • #AmReading — Duh! Of course we’ll put this one first! #AmReading is “this is what I’m reading.”
  • #BookLovers – Used by authors, publishers, and anyone who wants to discuss or sell a book.
  • #Bibliophile — Just dive into everything books.
  • #FreeBooks – Free. Books. That is all. (it changes from day to day)
  • #BookAddict — Exactly what it says.
  • #EBooks – Looking for something to download? This hashtag is for you! It’s kind of a mixed bag, however, and you may need to wade through a bit of spammy stuff to get to the good stuff.
  • #Books – Self explanatory.  Books, books, books.
  • #Bookshelves  or #Bookshelf  — Want bookshelf porn? We’ve got it.
  • #BookPhotography — Just photos of books. Good photos of books.
  • #BookstoreBingo – Amusing hashtag featuring anecdotes from bookstores.
  • #KindleBargains  or #KindleBargain – Featuring Kindle book deals.
  • #BookChat – Book discussion hashtag.
  • #LitFict – Discussion and sharing of literary fiction books.
  • #GoodReads — Connect with others in the Good Reads community, the most active group of book lovers online.
  • #IReadEverywhere — For we who read in weird places. Bathtub, in a tree, at a basketball game? Take a photo and upload it with the tweet.
  • #Fiction and #Nonfiction – Discusses and shares books.
  • #WomensFiction – Featuring fiction choices for women.
  • #GreatReads – People sharing great reads on Twitter.
  • #Kindle – Items of interest to Kindle users and lovers of Kindle books. (can sometimes be polluted with too many ads from Amazon, though…)
  • #WhatToRead – Book recommendations from other book lovers on Twitter (or Instagram, same hashtag)
  • #Suspense – Featuring discussion and recommendations for Thrillers, Action Adventure, and Suspense titles.
  • # BookWorld  —  Other book obsessed people.
  • #ChickLit – Discussion and recommendations of ChickLit topics.
  • #PopBooks — Popular books.

Instagram hashtags for book lovers:

  • #bookstagram — Bookshelf porn, screenshots of what people are reading, photos of cool books, and reading/book memes.
  • #EpicReads  — This is mostly jphotos of beautiful books and book culture.
  • #Books — Exactly what you’d think it is.
  • #BookAddict — More of the same.
  • #BookClub — Still more, but tends toward intellectualism.
  • #BookNerd — One of the more eclectic Instagram book tags.
  • #BookPorn — Warm and fuzzy pics of books and people reading.

Top 20 #Hashtags For Your Book on Twitter & Instagram (or, Mastering the Art of the #Hashtag)

By Haley BCU

Haley BCU is the author of Four Letter Words published in January by Can’t Put it Down Books. She is a master of the hashtag.

So, you wrote a book! Let me be one of the many who will congratulate you, be impressed with your dedication and hard work, and purchase a copy! That’s what you wanted to hear, right? But who am I? Isn’t that the question?

No, the question isn’t who. The who is ever-changing. It’s how . How do you find me, your potential reader? A person ready and willing to drop some hard earned coin on your passion project. But… If we never connect, we are forever destined to be two ocean liners passing on an inky black night; missing one another by what might be inches or miles, but we’ll never know unless you #use #your #hashtags .

And not like that. Hash-tagging everything from here to Kingdom come will do nothing but make your social media post look unprofessional and spam riddled. Why would I want to drop cold cash on a spam-spewing, unprofessional author tagging desperately from their Twitter account? The simple answer? I wouldn’t. However, there are easy rules to follow when when it comes to utilizing hashtags for people to find your book in an endless literary sea.

Let’s start with the aforementioned social network, the one designed to showcase your writing in less than 280 characters: Twitter. Did you know the most common length of a Tweet is a mere 33 characters? Essentially, what that means is you can pack your Tweet with the full 280, but if you do so with every-single-post you’re crossing into spam territory. Thankfully, Twitter etiquette is far simpler than real-life etiquette, or this writer would be screwed, blued, and tattooed. Commonly use between two and five hashtags per post, but no more than six. Don’t simply hashtag what looks catchy or cool. Start with the day of the week. For almost all days, excluding Monday and Saturday, there’s a corresponding hashtag. If your calendar begins with Sunday, the beginning of your week is #SampleSunday: where you can offer a link ( http://bit.ly will shorten any link free) with a downloadable sample, driving traffic to your website/mailing list in one simple move. If poetry or songwriting is your style this is ideal and extremely simple; cut and paste a stanza. #TeaserTuesday is next. You might consider reusing Sunday’s sample strategy. I implore you take it a step further. Offer readers something new. Either share an unreleased snippet of work, or make a creatively-worded blog post hyping your next upcoming project. #WriterWednesday is a true free-for-all, and time to stand out from the crowd. This is the day to use your best tagline or piece of “Ad copy,” refresh your timeline, and choose a new pinned Tweet. Having the same pin becomes tiresome, so find new creative ways to change the look of your feed while keeping your current project front and center. #IndieThursday is for the majority of us, whether we’ve set out completely on our own or are working with an independent publisher. Unless you’re rep’d by one of the big guys this is your time to shine. The same way people love a farmer’s market, they love the pat on the back they can give themselves from supporting an artist that isn’t entirely mainstream. This brings us to the day of days for Tweeting about your book, because you’re Tweeting into the wind without a substantial following to absorb your words. #FollowFriday is the official hashtag, but can be abbreviated to #FF if you find your post becoming lengthy, or the more specific #FridayReads or #StoryFriday . I will stress the importance of this day above all others. If you’re going to miss posting any day during the week (tip: avoid this with “scheduled posts”), I stress you make it any day but Friday. Friday is the golden day, a day to actively seek out new writers to follow, because along with those writers come a built-in audience of readers. Treat it like your mom sent you to the mall for a job, and you can’t leave without scheduling an interview. Set goals for yourself, and set them high. A dedicated fifteen minutes a day has the potential to completely alter and shape your desired audience, and on Friday that chance is magnified.

Along with these semi-daily hashtags, I’ve compiled a list of the top 20 most liked and re-shared tags related to writing. Select only those relevant to your style, add your chosen genre, and continue following the rule of no more than six hashtags per Tweet.

#Amazon #AmWriting #Author #Book #BookGiveaway #Ebook #Freebook #IndieAuthor #IndiePub #Kindle #LitFic #MustRead #MSWL (abbreviated industry term “Manuscript Wish List”) #New #Novel #NoveLines (for quotes) #Paperbacks #Quotes #Story #WritingCommunity

And one more for “good luck,” my absolute favorite tag,  #WritersLift. It’s writers supporting writers, by highlighting and sharing the work or WIP (“Work in Progress”) of others in the #WritingCommunity . I admittedly use #WritingCommunity with nearly every post, encroaching on my character count but keeping my name relevant in the largest active community of writers in the known universe.

Now that I’ve dropped the term easy more than once, let me show you the legitimately easy social network: Instagram. It boasts more active over-all users than Twitter, and many who don’t utilize social media otherwise have an Instagram. The theoretical artistic anonymity appeals to a vast audience, and for those who might not read an entire tweet – a striking image could better suit a wider audience. I can’t say there’s no such thing as too many hashtags on Instagram, but the limit of thirty (as opposed to the suggested max of six on Twitter) feels like freedom. My advice? Use every single one, and play with the format of your posts. Use the Return/Enter key to place them further down the post so it appears less cluttered, with simply your subtitle and short link to your current project beneath your chosen image. Here are your top twenty most liked and re-shared Instagram tags related to writing:

#AmWriting #Art #Author #Authors #Bibliophile #Book #Bookstagram #eBook #IndieAuthor #Kindle #Literature #Novel #Quote #Quotes #Read #Reading #Story #Writer #WritersLift #WritingCommunity

Now, I know I suggested you go all out and use thirty, but only offered twenty tags. Here’s where your writing skills come into play. Along with adding your genre or style, create one unique hashtag for your current project. It’s a great way to push brand recognition, and when clicked it’s a great way for potential readers or even publishers to view specific posts related only to your creative work. While self-promotion can appear confusing, endless, and tedious; this article exists to illustrate it doesn’t have to be, and even you can master the art of the #hashtag .

The Best Twitter Hashtags for Book Promotion

The great thing about Twitter is that you don’t necessarily have to have a lot of followers to be seen. You can have ten followers, but if you use a hashtag like #horror or #sciencefiction, many other people will see the post as well, as there are a lot more visitors to hashtag pages than individual accounts.

However, having more followers means that your post has a better chance to land on the Top list, which is the first list users see, and where the post will show up for longer, as opposed to the Latest thread, where your post may scroll off quite quickly, depending on the popularity of the hashtag. To reach the Top list, you need to get clicks, likes, and retweets, which is more likely if you have a lot of followers, though it’s certainly possible using hashtags alone.

Top Twitter List

There are comprehensive posts about general hashtags for authors. Those hashtags can be great for connecting with other writers and gaining followers, but not always useful for promoting and launching a specific book.

Tip: though most of these hashtags are Twitter-specific, you can use hashtags on other social media, such as Instagram and Pinterest.

Retweet Groups

It’s usually necessary to follow accounts in order to get a retweet, but not always.

Indie Author Retweet Group : #IARTG

Fantasy : #IFNRTG & #IFRTG

Horror : #HWRTG

Science Fiction : #SFRTG

#CR4U (Clean Reads)

#RRBC & #RaveReviewsBookClub – Need to be a paying member here .

#ASMSG – For members of ASMSG .

#IAN1 – For members of the Independent Author Network .

Book Genre Hashtags

Add any of these with the above for an extra boost. Some writers add 10 hashtags a post, but this isn’t recommended, as it can come across as spamming.

#Adventure #Apocalyptic #Crime #Dystopian #Erotica #Fantasy #HistFic #Historical #Horror #Memoir #MensFiction #MGLit (Middle Grade) #Mystery #NonFiction #Paranormal #ParanormalRomance #Poetry #Post-Apocalyptic #Romance #ScienceFiction #Suspense #SteamPunk #Thriller #UrbanFantasy #Vampire #WomensFiction #YA #YALit #YoungAdult #Zombie

Of course, there are many other possible genre hashtags, and you can combine your own (e.g. #RomanticMystery ). With more-obscure hashtags, it’s easier to end up in the Top list, but don’t choose something so obscure that no one else uses the hashtag.
