Anatomy of a Scholarly Article
TIP: When possible, keep your research question(s) in mind when reading scholarly articles. It will help you to focus your reading.
Title : Generally are straightforward and describe what the article is about. Titles often include relevant key words.
Abstract : A summary of the author(s)'s research findings and tells what to expect when you read the full article. It is often a good idea to read the abstract first, in order to determine if you should even bother reading the whole article.
Discussion and Conclusion : Read these after the Abstract (even though they come at the end of the article). These sections can help you see if this article will meet your research needs. If you don’t think that it will, set it aside.
Introduction : Describes the topic or problem researched. The authors will present the thesis of their argument or the goal of their research.
Literature Review : May be included in the introduction or as its own separate section. Here you see where the author(s) enter the conversation on this topic. That is to say, what related research has come before, and how do they hope to advance the discussion with their current research?
Methods : This section explains how the study worked. In this section, you often learn who and how many participated in the study and what they were asked to do. You will need to think critically about the methods and whether or not they make sense given the research question.
Results : Here you will often find numbers and tables. If you aren't an expert at statistics this section may be difficult to grasp. However you should attempt to understand if the results seem reasonable given the methods.
Works Cited (also be called References or Bibliography ): This section comprises the author(s)’s sources. Always be sure to scroll through them. Good research usually cites many different kinds of sources (books, journal articles, etc.). As you read the Works Cited page, be sure to look for sources that look like they will help you to answer your own research question.

A research journal is a periodical that contains articles written by experts in a particular field of study who report the results of research in that field. The articles are intended to be read by other experts or students of the field, and they are typically much more sophisticated and advanced than the articles found in general magazines. This guide offers some tips to help distinguish scholarly journals from other periodicals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH JOURNALS
PURPOSE : Research journals communicate the results of research in the field of study covered by the journal. Research articles reflect a systematic and thorough study of a single topic, often involving experiments or surveys. Research journals may also publish review articles and book reviews that summarize the current state of knowledge on a topic.
APPEARANCE : Research journals lack the slick advertising, classified ads, coupons, etc., found in popular magazines. Articles are often printed one column to a page, as in books, and there are often graphs, tables, or charts referring to specific points in the articles.
AUTHORITY : Research articles are written by the person(s) who did the research being reported. When more than two authors are listed for a single article, the first author listed is often the primary researcher who coordinated or supervised the work done by the other authors. The most highly‑regarded scholarly journals are typically those sponsored by professional associations, such as the American Psychological Association or the American Chemical Society.
VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY : Articles submitted to research journals are evaluated by an editorial board and other experts before they are accepted for publication. This evaluation, called peer review, is designed to ensure that the articles published are based on solid research that meets the normal standards of the field of study covered by the journal. Professors sometimes use the term "refereed" to describe peer-reviewed journals.
WRITING STYLE : Articles in research journals usually contain an advanced vocabulary, since the authors use the technical language or jargon of their field of study. The authors assume that the reader already possesses a basic understanding of the field of study.
REFERENCES : The authors of research articles always indicate the sources of their information. These references are usually listed at the end of an article, but they may appear in the form of footnotes, endnotes, or a bibliography.
PERIODICALS THAT ARE NOT RESEARCH JOURNALS
POPULAR MAGAZINES : These are periodicals that one typically finds at grocery stores, airport newsstands, or bookstores at a shopping mall. Popular magazines are designed to appeal to a broad audience, and they usually contain relatively brief articles written in a readable, non‑technical language.
Examples include: Car and Driver , Cosmopolitan , Esquire , Essence , Gourmet , Life , People Weekly , Readers' Digest , Rolling Stone , Sports Illustrated , Vanity Fair , and Vogue .
NEWS MAGAZINES : These periodicals, which are usually issued weekly, provide information on topics of current interest, but their articles seldom have the depth or authority of scholarly articles.
Examples include: Newsweek , Time , U.S. News and World Report .
OPINION MAGAZINES : These periodicals contain articles aimed at an educated audience interested in keeping up with current events or ideas, especially those pertaining to topical issues. Very often their articles are written from a particular political, economic, or social point of view.
Examples include: Catholic World , Christianity Today , Commentary , Ms. , The Militant , Mother Jones , The Nation , National Review , The New Republic , The Progressive , and World Marxist Review .
TRADE MAGAZINES : People who need to keep up with developments in a particular industry or occupation read these magazines. Many trade magazines publish one or more special issues each year that focus on industry statistics, directory lists, or new product announcements.
Examples include: Beverage World , Progressive Grocer , Quick Frozen Foods International , Rubber World , Sales and Marketing Management , Skiing Trade News , and Stores .

Nature and the Nature research journals
As part of the Nature Portfolio, Nature has spent the last 150 years championing and supporting scientific work. Alongside our Nature research journals, we continue that mission in partnering with researchers from across the globe to bring their most significant discoveries to the widest possible audience.
We identify and publish primary research that makes major advances in a field
Articles published in Nature and the Nature research journals have contributed to some of the world’s most notable scientific advances. From the discovery of radioactive decay, to Watson and Crick’s seminal work on DNA, to Dolly the sheep and cloning, read more how our articles have played a critical role in advancing their fields and helping to address global societal challenges.
Rigorous manuscript development
Our editors assess and select the most important research to publish, partnering with authors and reviewers to deliver significant improvements to manuscripts through our rigorous and intensive review process.
Systematic reproducibility checks
In 2013 we introduced a mandatory reproducibility checklist requiring detailed reporting of analytical and experimental design as well as statistical analyses. 83% of surveyed Nature authors felt our checklist had significantly improved reporting of statistics within papers published in Nature .
Innovation in peer review and transparency
Nature and Nature research journals conduct ethics and biosecurity peer review, peer review of code and data, and offer transparent peer review, publishing peer reviewer comments alongside the paper should the authors wish to do so.
Open data and code
We support communities by ensuring deposition of data and code alongside the research article to maximise transparency and reuse. Our active encouragement of data deposition has boosted data availability associated with published papers from around 50% to over 80% in some disciplines.
We encourage authors to submit protocols to the Protocols Exchange – an open sharing platform – these provide valuable detailed reporting on the analytical and experimental design as well as statistical analyses.
Critical assessment
Our highly qualified specialist editors will provide initial assessment ahead of selecting the most relevant peer reviewers for each research article, then work through revisions with our authors, to ensure the final research articles published will achieve the greatest significance.
“It was a unique situation, during coronacrisis, that our manuscript was handled by three editors at Nature . We really appreciated direct, timely and professional communication from all editors. They all had detailed knowledge of our manuscript and steered the editorial process very professionally. The editors were focused on critical aspects of the review process with special attention to technical issues raised by the reviewers. Overall, the editorial and review process motivated us to further upgrade and improve our manuscript.” Professor, Germany
“From the editorial staff to the productions [sic] teams have always conducted themselves in the most professional manner. I use the term 'most' literally because the Nature series journals' personnel are more professional than any other journal in which I have had work rejected or published.” Associate Professor, Canada
“As we always find with publishing in Nature the entire process is undertaken to the highest standards. There is also a very nice personal touch in the way all the editors and publication processing team interacts with the authors.” Associate Professor, UK
In addition, there are many dedicated people behind every paper we publish , including copy editors who check and improve language for clarity and scientific accuracy; art illustrators who redraw schemes and diagrams so that they are clear and can be used for teaching, talks and presentations; production staff who ensure the paper is formatted, published, and delivered to all relevant manuscript repositories; and a dedicated press team who ensure the research is explained and disseminated to the widest possible audience across society and the world.
Amplifying our authors’ work
Global reach and engagement
We use our global reach and the nature.com platform to engage with research communities beyond the immediate fields of our author’s work - aiding interdisciplinarity and collaboration and providing researchers with access to articles that they didn’t realise would be of interest to them. Nature.com reaches more than 8 million visitors each month.
Making research part of the wider conversation
There were more than 100,000 news stories on research published in our journals in 2019. Our dedicated international press teams worked alongside authors to reach a wide range of audiences across the globe, including other researchers, policy makers and the general public with news of their research, reported clearly and accurately.
Enhanced citations
On average, papers in the Nature and Nature research journals are cited around 12 times more than papers published in other journals, and downloaded around 34 times more.
Finding the right home for your work at the Nature Portfolio and Springer Nature
Our editorial teams work with authors to find the best home for all submitted manuscripts from our wider family of journals, both at the Nature Portfolio and more widely across our other Springer Nature imprints, including Springer, BMC and Palgrave Macmillan. Whether it is your first paper, or the one that will make your career, there’s a place for your research in our journals.
We launch new journals that reflect the needs of our community and society
We are fascinated by the evolution of science, and as new disciplines emerge and established fields intersect, we are driven to provide a platform to champion the questions, solutions and discussions this evolution brings. Our primary goal is to produce journals that the scientific community values, both as readers and authors, launching new journals such as Nature Ecology & Evolution to meet the needs of the research community.
We also aim to create innovative journals that span both the natural and social sciences to help researchers address some of the biggest challenges that are facing global society, such as Nature Climate Change , Nature Human Behaviour and Nature Sustainability .
Recognising the growing importance of open research to advancing discovery, the Nature Portfolio also includes a flourishing collection of fully open access journals, both subject specific, such as the Communications journals and multidisciplinary such as Nature Communications and Scientific Reports . From 2021, every journal in the Nature Portfolio will include an open access option for all primary research.
Ultimately, if your work is scientifically robust, there is a home for your research within our family of journals.

Question What prolonged symptoms experienced by youth are most associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection?
Findings Among 5367 participants in the RECOVER-Pediatrics cohort study, 14 symptoms in both school-age children (6-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years) were more common in those with vs without SARS-CoV-2 infection history, with 4 additional symptoms in school-age children only and 3 in adolescents only. Empirically derived indices for PASC research and associated clustering patterns were developed.
Meaning This study developed research indices for characterizing pediatric PASC. Symptom patterns were similar but distinguishable between school-age children and adolescents, highlighting the importance of characterizing PASC separately in different age groups.
Importance Most research to understand postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID, has focused on adults, with less known about this complex condition in children. Research is needed to characterize pediatric PASC to enable studies of underlying mechanisms that will guide future treatment.
Objective To identify the most common prolonged symptoms experienced by children (aged 6 to 17 years) after SARS-CoV-2 infection, how these symptoms differ by age (school-age [6-11 years] vs adolescents [12-17 years]), how they cluster into distinct phenotypes, and what symptoms in combination could be used as an empirically derived index to assist researchers to study the likely presence of PASC.
Design, Setting, and Participants Multicenter longitudinal observational cohort study with participants recruited from more than 60 US health care and community settings between March 2022 and December 2023, including school-age children and adolescents with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection history.
Exposure SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Main Outcomes and Measures PASC and 89 prolonged symptoms across 9 symptom domains.
Results A total of 898 school-age children (751 with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection [referred to as infected ] and 147 without [referred to as uninfected ]; mean age, 8.6 years; 49% female; 11% were Black or African American, 34% were Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, and 60% were White) and 4469 adolescents (3109 infected and 1360 uninfected; mean age, 14.8 years; 48% female; 13% were Black or African American, 21% were Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, and 73% were White) were included. Median time between first infection and symptom survey was 506 days for school-age children and 556 days for adolescents. In models adjusted for sex and race and ethnicity, 14 symptoms in both school-age children and adolescents were more common in those with SARS-CoV-2 infection history compared with those without infection history, with 4 additional symptoms in school-age children only and 3 in adolescents only. These symptoms affected almost every organ system. Combinations of symptoms most associated with infection history were identified to form a PASC research index for each age group; these indices correlated with poorer overall health and quality of life. The index emphasizes neurocognitive, pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms in school-age children but change or loss in smell or taste, pain, and fatigue/malaise–related symptoms in adolescents. Clustering analyses identified 4 PASC symptom phenotypes in school-age children and 3 in adolescents.
Conclusions and Relevance This study developed research indices for characterizing PASC in children and adolescents. Symptom patterns were similar but distinguishable between the 2 groups, highlighting the importance of characterizing PASC separately for these age ranges.

Lawrence Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers along with Kathryn Gilmore and her son, Liam, cut the ribbon during the dedication ceremony on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
When Kathryn Gilmore received the news from Lawrence Habitat for Humanity that she would be getting a home, it was far from a blur. Amid tears of joy and sharing the news with friends and family, she felt, most of all, a tremendous weight lifted off her shoulders.
“Like, we’re going to have a home,” Gilmore said.
“When I got the final approval saying that you’re going to be getting one of these homes, I was calling everybody, calling my mom, my aunts, and my dad was with me at the time because we work together,” Gilmore told the Journal-World. “I was so excited I actually left work early to go and tell my son, and he was so excited and jumped up and down and gave me a hug.”
The new home in Eudora, which was unveiled on Thursday, is special for more than one reason — it’s the first zero-net-energy home created as part of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Atmos Energy. Gilmore and her son, Liam, are the 106th family to receive a home from Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.
Gilmore has been a tile setter on a construction team for about eight years, and she and her dad even did tile work on the new home. She said that while she has done lots of work on other people’s houses, this is the first time she has been able to enjoy her own work with her dad by her side.
The process of creating the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home took at least two years, and although Gilmore began working on the house in February, she was deeply inspired by the dedication of the Lawrence Habitat staff and volunteers. As she approaches her move-in date, Gilmore said she is excited about all that the future holds.
“I truly do feel blessed that I get to have this experience and get to go through the process and meet all of the amazing people that I have in the process of building this home,” Gilmore said. “I’m looking forward to helping out with the next house.”
During the dedication ceremony on Thursday, Lawrence Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Erika Zimmerman said her organization was honored and grateful to be a part of Gilmore’s story.

“She’s met every single challenge throughout the build process straight on and with a smile,” Zimmerman said at the dedication ceremony. “Kathryn has put in over 200 hours building her home and taking home ownership education classes. In a matter of weeks, she will sign a mortgage, and then she and Liam will move into the house.”
As a net-zero home, the house is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. The home was designed and constructed to meet rigorous green building standards. It features rooftop solar panels with a 7.8 kilowatt design, high-efficiency Energy Star natural gas appliances, premium insulation and windows and advanced weatherization elements, all contributing to increased energy efficiency.
“We always talk about natural gas being the most affordable energy source for a lot of Americans and we really wanted to showcase that, not only in these homes, but it certainly has a longer lasting impact,” said Atmos Energy Manager of Public Affairs Aaron Bishop. “We want to make sure that we’re good environmental stewards as well as being good stewards to the family that’s going to be moving into this home.”
This home integrates renewable energy with natural gas, using solar panels for electricity and natural gas for heating. While natural gas is a fossil fuel, Bishop said gas companies like Atmos are making an effort to reduce their methane emissions and enhance the efficiency of their systems.
“Our goal is to reduce our methane emissions on our natural gas distribution by 50% by the year 2035, and we’ve already accomplished about a 17% reduction,” Bishop said. “We’re making it happen.”
Zimmerman said that this project was exciting for both the staff and volunteers, showcasing the true potential of affordable energy and living in Douglas County.
“It really helped open our eyes and help us understand what it really means to build an energy efficient home,” Zimmerman said. “Now that we know those things, we can take that into every build going forward.”
Lawrence Habitat for Humanity and Atmos Energy held a dedication ceremony for their natural gas-powered zero net energy home on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
Overall, Zimmerman said that what truly inspired the partnership was their shared vision to provide an affordable home while proving that it is possible to succeed in achieving net-zero energy.
“To say that this house has been a journey would be an understatement,” Zimmerman said at the dedication ceremony. “We’ve had challenges and triumphs while building this house, but at the end of the day, Kathryn will get to realize her dream of becoming a homeowner, and Liam will get his forever home.”
