This is quite a tricky one! I am trying to translate the following sentence. It is for a formal covering letter, talking about a journalist who is a foreign correspondent. Below is my effort. It doesn't have to be a strict translation, as long as the same meaning is conveyed. Merci beaucoup d'avance! While on assignment in xxx, I was able to draw on local sources to break news ahead of our competitors and complete insightful features on the country’s key energy infrastructure/political developments.

on assignment for a journalist often means s/he is sent out to cover one story, but only temporarily-- en reportage. You travel somewhere, stay in a hotel, and come back to file your story or article. une affectation would be a long-term assignment, requiring you to move and live somewhere else for an extended period of time.

ok, merci! so, just out of interest, is it possible to also say "en affectation" as well?

Jean-Michel Carrère

jones the jones, the (correct) answer to your question was provided by Wildan1 in his previous post. An alternative in the field of journalism would be : En tant qu'envoyé spécial en + country / region or à + city
