Pope francis - easter 2024.
Excerpt from Pope Francis' Easter Vigil Homily 2024
Brothers and sisters, Jesus is our Pasch. He is the One who brings us from darkness into light, who is bound to us forever, who rescues us from the abyss of sin and death, and draws us into the radiant realm of forgiveness and eternal life. Let us look up to him! Let us welcome Jesus, the God of life, into our lives, and today once again say “yes” to him. Then no stone will block the way to our hearts, no tomb will suppress the joy of life, no failure will doom us to despair. Let us lift our eyes to him and ask that the power of his resurrection may roll away the heavy stones that weigh down our souls. Let us lift our eyes to him, the Risen Lord, and press forward in the certainty that, against the obscure backdrop of our failed hopes and our deaths, the eternal life that he came to bring is even now present in our midst.
Sister, brother, let your heart burst with jubilation on this holy night! Together let us sing of Jesus’ resurrection: “Sing to him, distant lands, rivers and plains, deserts and mountains ... Sing to the Lord of life, risen from the tomb, more brilliant than a thousand suns. All peoples beset by evil and plagued by injustice, all peoples displaced and devastated: on this holy night cast aside your songs of sadness and despair. The Man of Sorrows is no longer in prison: he has opened a breach in the wall; he is hastening to meet you. In the darkness, let an unexpected shout of joy resound: He is alive; he is risen! And you, my brothers and sisters, small and great ... you who are weary of life, who feel unworthy to sing... let a new flame be kindled in your heart, let new vitality be heard in your voice. It is the Pasch of the Lord; it is the feast of the living."
SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO - PASCUA 202 4

Easter Sunday (both Vigil and Easter daytime celebrations) is the peak of our Catholic faith and the greatest Feast Day—the Resurrection of the Lord! It ranks first because our entire faith hinges on it. As Paul said, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain” (1 Cor 15:17). “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Cor 15:20) Jesus Christ is risen today! Alleluia!
¡Aleluya!
EASTER VIGIL | Vigilia Pascual
Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper
The Easter Vigil ends the Triduum and begins Easter celebrations. It is the Mass celebrated at sundown on Holy Saturday and it begins the Easter celebrations of Jesus’ resurrection. It’s also the day that new catechumens, those who are entering the Catholic Church, receive the Sacraments for the first time.
Vigilia Pascual
Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday is a Holy Day of Obligation because the Mass celebrates the most important teaching in the Catholic faith - that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead so that we could share eternal life with him in heaven.
EASTER SEASON
Catholics observe Easter in different stages. Easter Sunday is the greatest Sunday of the year, and it marks the start of the “Easter Octave,” or the eight days that stretch from the first to the second Sunday of Easter (also known as Divine Mercy Sunday). The Church celebrates each of these eight days as Solemnities of the Lord — a direct extension of Easter Sunday.
The entire Easter season lasts 50 days, and includes the Solemnity of the Ascension of Christ, which falls on the 40th day of Easter. It ends with Pentecost, which is derived from the Greek word "pentecoste," meaning “50th.”
“The fifty days from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday are celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed as one ‘great Sunday,’” according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “These are the days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung.”
The USCCB calls Easter “the most important of all liturgical times.”
“It celebrates Jesus's victory of sin and death and salvation for mankind,” the U.S. bishops say. “It is God's greatest act of love to redeem mankind.”

An octave is the eight-day period during which Easter or Christmas is celebrated, and includes the actual feast. The eighth day is also called the octave or “octave day,” and days in between are said to be “within the octave”:
Octave means an eight-day celebration, that is, the prolongation of a feast to the eighth day (dies octava) inclusive. The feast itself is considered the first day, and it is followed by six days called “days within the octave.” The eighth or octave day is kept with greater solemnity than the “days within the octave” (With Christ Through the Year by Bernard Strasser, 1947, p. 39).
The Easter Octave begins on Easter Sunday and ends on the Second Sunday of Easter of the Divine Mercy with every day being another solemnity or another “little Easter.” The current title for each of the octave is “Monday in the Octave of Easter,” “Tuesday in the Octave of Easter” etc., but commonly called “Easter Monday,” “Easter Tuesday,” and so forth. The Easter Octave “overrides” any other feasts on the calendar.

SUNDAY MASS CONNECTION — At every Mass, Jesus offers himself to the Father for us. We can always join our own offerings with Jesus at Mass. This Sunday, offer your desire to radiate the light of the Resurrection. Ask for a deepening of Christ’s grace so you can be his light for others.
LOVE IN ACTION — During Easter, we are called to be instruments of new life for all our brothers and sisters, especially through choices of love and solidarity. May each of us leave the tombs of our doubts and fears so that we can help meet the spiritual and material needs of others, especially through our prayers, offerings, and acts of charity and accompaniment, which are powerful channels of grace for all hearts.
