The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science offered by the School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science is a research-intensive program that emphasizes stimulating and engaging learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in original thinking, information synthesis, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

PhD Degrees in Canada

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Canada are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.  

PhD Entry Requirements

Canadian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

The Differences Between PhD Studies in the U.S. and Canada

North America is often seen as the epicenter of education, research, and innovation. This lures many prospective PhD students from all around the world. In fact, international student enrollment in Canada increased 11 percent in the last year, mainly as a result of the 2016 elections in the U.S. But despite the sociopolitical climate in the U.S., universities in the U.S. are still attracting international students. This is evidenced by the 2016-2017 data from the 2017 Open Doors Report , which revealed a total of almost 291,000 international students in the U.S.

According to the report, most international students chose the same top two areas of study, regardless of whether they studied in Canada or the U.S. The top subject areas were business and engineering.

Which country should you choose for your PhD? The best way to make a decision is to analyze the pros and cons of each country. In this blog post, we will help you arrive at a decision by describing the major differences between PhD studies in the U.S. and Canada.

Requirements for Admission to a PhD Program in the U.S. Versus Canada

The general admission requirements for a PhD in the U.S. and Canada are similar. Both countries usually require the following:

• High score on a graduate admissions tests, such as the GMAT or GRE
• Language certificates (English for the U.S., and English or French for Canada)
• Statement of purpose
• Research proposal
• Letters of recommendation
• Writing sample

Although most differences between pursuing a PhD in Canada or the U.S. will be visible during the program itself, there are two key differences that might make you favor one country over the other:

• To apply for a doctoral degree in the U.S. , a master’s degree is not necessary, whereas in Canada it is. U.S. universities accept students who have only a bachelor’s degree because the structure of PhD programs is typically longer and is designed to include part of the curriculum from master’s programs. Whereas in Canada, it is rare that students without a master’s degree can pursue a PhD. The main exception is when you enroll in a Master of Science degree program, you can switch to a PhD after the first year.
• Although the research proposal is an important admissions component in the U.S., PhD students are expected to develop their theses and research during their second or third year. In contrast, in Canada, PhD students are expected to begin working on their theses as soon as they start their PhD program.

What to Expect as a PhD Student in Canada

In Canadian PhD programs, you will be expected to participate in small group seminars and you will likely spend about 20 hours per week reading. Additionally, you will be required to do research on your thesis from the start, publish several peer-reviewed articles, and proactively apply for fellowships and scholarships to further fund your research.

Moreover, it is likely you will also participate in Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Research Assistantships (RAs), which might take up to 20 hours per week of your time. Although 40 hours per week is the average time you are expected to invest in your doctoral studies, depending on the program, you might find yourself working even more.

Although PhD programs in Canada are typically designed to last about four years, it is more realistic to expect that you will finish your doctorate in five or more years. This is important to remember because some programs do not allow for extended funding, so you might have to pay tuition for the extra years you take to complete your studies.

What to Expect as a PhD Student in the U.S.

Things are a bit different in U.S. PhD programs. In the U.S., there is no time pressure to complete your PhD program. The timeline to complete a PhD is typically five to six years. If it takes you longer, it is not a problem because you can keep your funding until you complete your program. The system is so flexible that some students finish their program in three years with extensive amounts of research, while others can take up to eight or even 10 years.

As in Canada, the PhD curriculum in the U.S. includes seminars, but more of them, and naturally, a lot of reading and research. Additionally, you will be asked to publish peer-reviewed articles, but they do not count as much in the U.S. as in Canada.

Although the average 40 hours’ work per week is also the norm in the U.S., the main difference with Canada is that teaching and grading responsibilities often take more of students’ time. This is tricky because it might mean that you do not have as much time as you would like to invest in your own research thesis.

The Financial Costs of a PhD in Canada Versus the U.S.

The financial aspects of doctoral programs are one of the most important issues students face, whether they are an international, U.S., or Canadian student. The average cost of a PhD program is a lot cheaper in Canada than in the U.S. However, if you are an international student, you should expect higher fees in both countries. Below are the average tuition rates that international students pay for PhD studies in each country:

• Average tuition in the U.S.: $28,000 – $40,000 USD per year
• Average tuition in Canada: $8,000 – $20,000 CAD per year

The advantage the U.S. has over Canada in this respect is that you are more likely to find a fully funded doctorate in the U.S. than in Canada. Plus, in the U.S., by securing a TA or RA position, you automatically receive a tuition waiver.

In Canada, students typically have to apply for scholarships based on academic merit. These scholarships can cover tuition fees, cost of research, and occasionally living costs. Sometimes TAs and RAs can further cover the cost of studies, either partially or totally.

Living costs vary in both countries, but on average, living in Canada is still cheaper than living in the U.S. To get an idea about what to expect in terms of living costs, below are some median figures:

• Average student living costs in the U.S.: $1,200 – $2,500 USD per month
• Average student living costs in the Canada: $1,000 – $1,500 CAD per month

Employment Options After a PhD in Canada Versus the U.S.

If you are looking to obtain a PhD, you probably know that a doctoral program is more about passion for research and teaching than anything else. Numerous reports show that most industries are just as happy with employees that hold only a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. Furthermore, many statistics show that PhD graduates do not earn more immediately after their studies and that the financial benefits of doing doctoral studies are more visible in the long run.

That being said, in our comparison, PhD studies in the U.S. have more favorable outcomes than in Canada. Recent data shows that the demand for employees with a doctoral degree in Canada is lower than the number of doctoral graduates. But this should not necessarily discourage you. It simply means that you will have to make a name for yourself in a more competitive market, given that most jobs in Canada for PhD graduates are available in the academic and research sectors.

The U.S. business sector is more educated about the added value a PhD graduate can bring to a company, and consequently, there are more jobs (outside of the academic and research sectors) available for holders of a doctoral degree.

Common Ground Between Canada and the U.S.

In both the U.S. and Canada, you will be required to put in a lot of hard work in your PhD program. If you imagine a PhD is going to be like a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you may be in for a lot of surprises (and challenges). Fortunately, both the U.S. and Canada have strong international student organizations and associations that can help you better integrate with your PhD program, adjust to life as a PhD student, and make connections. In fact, in both countries, you are actively encouraged to join such networks and partake in their activities.

Another aspect in common is that your professional success or work-life balance—basically, your overall satisfaction with the PhD program—will depend on the following factors:

• Field of study
• Supervising professor

These three factors make a world of difference in your level of satisfaction with your PhD program because:

• Your field of study influences your workload and can have a negative impact on your results if you are not 100 percent motivated to research the topic you choose.
• Your department influences your finances and your social relations. It is with people in your department that you will spend the most time. Furthermore, the relationship the department has with the university influences a lot of the administrative issues related to your studies, including the stipends, grants, and scholarships that you are likely to receive. Additionally, the relationships your department has with the industry can influence your career prospects.
• Your  supervising professor is the scholar with whom you will work most closely. It is essential to have someone you can communicate with, who is genuinely interested in your project, and whose knowledge and experience are relevant for your research.

1. Choose the PhD Type

In Canada, you can select between structured and open Ph.D. programs. Structured doctorate programs are not the same as conventional doctoral research. PhD students, on average, work steadily on achieving their research idea as part of a team and with extensive assistance from a group of academic professionals. On the other hand, The term “open PhD” refers to the fact that you will be responsible for proposing and outlining your own research project as well as completing it on your own.

Nonetheless, for either of the two programs you will need to have a supervisor who is willing to guide you through the research process. After you have found the supervisor, you will need to make sure if your university requires a letter of support from your supervisor along with your application.

2. Submit the GPA Score

Instead of merely submitting your final degree result, you will generally be requested to offer a Grade Point Average number. Grade Point Average (GPA) is a statistic that reflects how well or how high you achieved on average in your courses. It is intended to rate you during your studies on a GPA scale ranging from 1.0 to 4.0, and it indicates whether your total grades have been good or low. Canadian institutions may request transcripts of your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, including information on specific modules and grades.

3. Submit Your Application Online

Apply online to the university of your choice, pay the application costs, and submit the needed papers. Some of the documentation required by institutions while applying for Ph.D. programs are as follows.

• Statement of Purpose (1,000-1,500 word essay explaining why you are applying to the specific program and institute).
• Academic Transcript
• Certificate of Proficiency, either TOEFL or IELTS
• Letters of Recommendation (up to three, one from your supervisor) .

4. Apply for a Study Permit

A study permit is mandatory for anyone who wishes to live and study in Canada during a course. After being accepted by the university, you must apply for a Canadian study permit. The Permit is valid for the term of your PhD, also an additional of 90 days to allow you time to plan your travel or apply for a post-study work visa. Normally, you should apply for a Study Permit in your native country before travelling to Canada. You can start the application process online, but you may need to take your passport and other documents to a Canadian embassy/consulate in your home country. You must have the following documents ready in order to obtain your study permit:

• Proof of Funds
• No criminal or immigration-related convictions
• Valid travel document (passport)
• Acceptance letter from a DLI
• Medical Insurance
• Proof of Language Proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS)

Think there aren't any snakes in Newfoundland? Think again

If you're squeamish about snakes, this is a bad news story.

If you catch a glimpse of something long and slinky on the ground in western Newfoundland this summer, it could indeed be just what you think it is.

Yes, that's right: there are snakes on the island, and they are breeding here.

Andrea Gigeroff, a PhD researcher from Mount Allison University who's back in Newfoundland for a second straight year, has seen dozens of garter snakes up close. 

Snakes aren't native to the island, so her inquiries initially were met with surprise.

"A lot of the time, people looked at me like I had three heads," said Gigeroff. "A lot of people would say, 'There's no snakes in Newfoundland.'"

Contrary to that common belief, there are snakes in the region. The first confirmed report of a snake on the island was in 2010 in the St. David's area of Bay St. George South. Most of the reports since that time have come out of the same area, but there have also been garter snakes observed in other locations, including Trout River, Middle Arm, and on the east coast near St. John's.

Seeing is believing

Tony Pottle of Stephenville had heard the stories but, even though he's an outdoorsman and a licensed guide, he'd never seen a snake for himself until last week.

Pottle was in an area near the mouth of Robinsons River when he saw what was unmistakably a snake move along the ground. 

He wasn't quick enough to grab a photo of that first sighting. But he saw it again, or one like it, later that evening and took a video. 

"It didn't pay much attention until I got really close, and then it sort of just scurried off the log, and then it disappeared into the long grass," said Pottle.

Believe it: Snakes are in Newfoundland, and they’re breeding

Pottle has seen photos of snakes shared in the past, often prompting comments from naysayers who don't believe the photos were taken in Newfoundland.

To ward off such negativity, on the same video that showed the snake, Pottle captured footage of his surrounding area, near Robinsons River. 

"I've got proof. I made a panoramic view of the river basin in the video, so there's no question: The snakes are here," he said.

Catching a (hay)ride

For every snake she's seen or been told about, Gigeroff has also encountered just as many doubters. 

People in Newfoundland have lived for generations with the certainty that snakes had not made their way to the island. 

But, for those who are believers, the working theory is that snakes were likely introduced accidentally, perhaps stowed away in hay bales imported by farmers as feed for their livestock.

One of the things Gigeroff hopes to learn from her research is how closely related garter snakes in Newfoundland are to those elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. 

To accomplish that, Gigeroff is collecting snakes in Newfoundland and will take genetic samples to analyze and compare with snake DNA held in the zoological collection at the New Brunswick Museum.

Belly buttons as proof

Wherever they've come from or how they got here, Gigeroff says what is certain is that snakes in Newfoundland are definitely breeding.

Gigeroff said, in fact, that first confirmed report back in 2010 was of a pregnant garter snake that was collected by the provincial government's wildlife division and had babies in captivity.

Some of the snakes Gigeroff has seen this year are very young.

"When they're really little, they have a little belly button where they connect to their egg sac, so you can tell that they're very new snakes to the world," said Gigeroff.

Who's eating who

Gigeroff's research will include analyzing the stomach contents of the snakes she captures to discover what they are eating and to determine how the non-native reptile might be affecting other species.

"Garter snakes basically will eat anything that they can get into their mouth," said Gigeroff, who speculates they could be eating toads or green frogs.

More worrisome would be if the snakes are eating nestling birds or baby meadow voles. 

Gigeroff said there are several species in particular that would be of concern if snakes are feeding on them, such as the rusty blackbird, barn swallow or olive-sided flycatcher.

"We want to make sure that they're not eating those, because that would be quite a problem," she said.

Online Doctor of Philosophy - Computer Engineering

Work leading to the degree of  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)  is designed to give the candidate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of his or her professional field and training in methods of research. The final basis for granting the degree shall be the candidate’s grasp of the subject matter of a broad field of study and a demonstrated ability to do independent research. In addition, the candidate must have acquired the ability to express thoughts clearly and forcefully in both oral and written languages. The degree is not granted solely for the completion of coursework, residence and technical requirements, although these must be met.

Degree Details

Total number of hours (64 or 96) • For students who already hold a Master’s Degree, 64 total hours are required. • For “direct PhD” students, 96 hours are required.

A maximum of (6) transfer hours allowed from another institution. • Transfer hours must be from a U.S. peer institution; they cannot have been used on a previous degree plan. • Students must send syllabi, transcript, and TAMU course equivalent to the Graduate Office. Transfer hours are subject to the approval of the GSC.

All PhD students are required to pass the Departmental Qualifying Examination . All incoming PHD students (64 and 96 hour) are required to take the exam within one year of starting the program.

There are two types of Qualifying Exams available. The research advisor will select which Track the student takes. Students without a research advisor default to Track 1. Track 1: Written exam consisting of questions from undergraduate courses. This exam is administered in January and June of each year. More details on Track 1 are provided later in the handbook. Track 2: Written and oral exam in which the separately formed committee provides a student research articles to analyze then give a presentation. More details on Track 2 are provided later in the handbook.

Prior to admission , students must present a study p l an that is reviewed by a TAMU ECEN facu l ty member to demonstrate to the department the feasibi l ity and viabi l ity of their prospective study. A Texas A&M electrical and computer engineering (ECEN) facu l ty member must commit to serve as the dissertation advisor prior to the admission of a student. The dissertation research content shou l d invo l ve on l y theories, software, or the modest use of hardware, instead of any physica l   l ab use, so that the research can be performed remote l y without being on campus. Students wi l l  a l so need to submit a signed document acknow l edging that their emp l oyer is aware of the Ph.D. study and a l l ows dissertation research resu l ts to be pub l ished. The p l an shou l d inc l ude the courses to be taken and ensure that a l l  the courses have distance  l earning sections avai l ab l e. The advisement of students in this program is simi l ar to the on-campus program except that the student-facu l ty interactions are a l l  conducted through internet-based conferencing software. Students in this program will take the qua l ifying exam, pre l iminary ora l  exam, and dissertation defense in the same way as the on-campus program. Students will need to cover their trave l  expenses to the campus for these exams.

Course Information

A minimum of 18 (or 42) classroom hours (excludes 681, 684, 685, and 691). • 18 hours required for students with a previous Master’s degree and 42 for direct PHD students. • Classroom hours must be taken from courses within the College of Engineering (all departments) and/or College of Arts & Sciences (only MATH, STAT, PHYS, CHEM, BIOL) • Courses on degree plan must be approved by Research Advisor.

Undergraduate hours allowed (2 courses or 8 hours) • Only 400 level courses can be included on degree plan.

No more than 3 credit hours of Internship (684) are allowed. • PHD students cannot take 684 after dissertation defense. • If you are considering going on internship (684), please consult your research advisor before making plans.

Three (3) hours of Seminar (ECEN/CSCE 681) are required.

No more than 2 credit hours of Directed Studies (685) are allowed. • Students working on a research project should enroll in Research (691) hours.

The Government of Canada has been a member of the international Open Government Partnership (OGP) since 2012. The OGP brings together national and sub-national governments from around the world who are committed to advancing transparent, participatory, inclusive and accountable governance. To remain a member of the OGP, the Government of Canada must work with civil society and the public to develop and carry out a National Action Plan on Open Government every two to four years.

The 2022–24 National Action Plan includes commitments and milestones to make the Government of Canada more open, transparent and accountable to those it serves. The government used feedback from the public to make sure that the plan reflects what matters most to the people of Canada.

This plan has five themes, listed below, with commitments and milestones for each.

• Giving people access to the information they need to understand the impacts of climate change

Queen's Department of Political Studies is very pleased to announce the appointment of Boyoon Lee to the position of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2024. 

Boyoon Lee is currently completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University, and received her PhD in Political Science from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Lee describes her current research focus as follows:

My scholarship is situated in comparative politics, particularly focusing on public opinion and the political economy of migration. Specifically, I study the determinants of migration-related preferences and attitudes as well as how socio-economic inequality is intertwined with migration decisions and behaviors, with a regional focus on Asia and the Americas. Methodologically, my research employs various types of experiments and causal inference methods for observational data. I am currently working on four major projects on the politics of immigration in East Asia and Latin America, which focus on (1) pathways through which political elites influence attitudes towards immigrants (e.g., educational content, political speech, historical narratives, and institutions), (2) sources of discrimination against migrants who share similar backgrounds (e.g., return migrants and co-ethnic migrants), (3) the link between migration and inequality (e.g., unequal impacts of climate change or the housing market), and (4) economic motivations behind migration preferences (e.g., firms' preferences).
