1. Instability.

A great disadvantage of money is that its value does not remain constant which creates instability in the economy. Too much of money reduces its value and causes inflation (i.e., rise in price level) and too little of money raises its value and results in deflation (i.e., fall in price level). Inflation distorts the pattern of distribution in favour of the rich ; thus, it makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. Deflation, on the other hand , results in unemployment and hardships to the working class.

2. Inequality of Income:

Money, through its excessive use and inflationary effect, creates and widens the inequalities in the distribution of income and wealth. This had divided the society into ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ and has led to a class conflict between them.

3. Growth of Monopolies:

The use of money leads to the concentration of wealth in a few hands and this gives rise to monopolies. Growth of monopolies results in the exploitation of the workers, brings misery and degradation to them.

4. Over-Capitalization:

Easy borrowing and lending facilities, made possible through money, may lead certain industries to use more capital than is required. This over-capitalization, in turn, results in over-produc­tion and unemployment.

5. Misuse of Capital:

Money, which is the basis of credit, leads to the creation of more and more credit creation. Credit creation, if not matched by the increase in production, results in inflationary rise in the prices.

6. Hoarding:

In the materialistic world, people give undue importance to money and, instead of utilising in productive activities, may start hoarding. This would adversely affect the growth of income, output and employment of the economy.

7. Black Money:

Money, due to storability characteristic, is the cause of the evil of black money. It provides people a convenient way to evade taxes by concealing their income. Black money, in turn, encourages black marketing and speculative activities.

8. Political Instability:

Wide fluctuations in prices and business activities, caused by money, may lead to political instability. This may result in the change of government.

9. Moral and Social Evils:

In the modern times, moral values have been sacrificed at the alter of money. People have become so much money-minded that they openly indulge in corrupt practices to satisfy their greed for money. Money is also the root cause of thefts, murders, frauds and other social evils.

Unlike any other store of wealth, paper money can be printed at will by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If there is a need, such as in times of a national emergency or monetary deflation, the bureau can print and release as many bills as needed to resupply the population with paper money.

Conversely, printing too much paper money as required to sustain moderate growth can lead to high rates of inflation. As the number of legal notes increases, the value of those notes decreases because more dollars are chasing relatively fewer goods and services, which causes prices to rise. If inflation gets out of control, it can lead to hyperinflation where a vicious cycle of printing new money is needed to make up for the fact that old money is perpetually losing value.

Disadvantage: Public Confidence

Paper money is valued by a nation's citizens only if all of those citizens agree to have the same confidence in that currency to represent the value stated on it. If public confidence fades, whether because of high national debt or political turmoil, chaos can ensue where goods and services will be traded only in kind, meaning paper money can become practically useless. This happened in the Weimar Republic in Germany during the 1920s and was happening in Zimbabwe in 2008, where inflation was running at an annual rate of 89 sextillion percent.

Disadvantage: Fragility

Paper money is susceptible to accidental tearing, shredding, burning and being run through the laundry. Federal Reserve Notes are not insurable by the U.S. government but can be replaced if enough of the damaged note remains. What if you find someone who has the need for meat but no bananas and can only offer you bunnies? To get your meat, he or she must find someone who has bananas and wants bunnies.

But that is not where the problems end: even if you find someone with whom to trade meat for bananas, you may not think a bunch of them is worth a whole cow. You would then have to devise a way to divide your cow (a messy business) and determine how many bananas you are willing to take for certain parts of your cow. To solve these problems came commodity money, which is a kind of currency based on the value of an underlying commodity.

Colonialists, for example, used beaver pelts and dried corn as currency for transactions. These kinds of commodities were chosen for a number of reasons. They were widely desired and therefore valuable, but they were also durable, portable and easily stored. Another example of commodity money is the U. S. currency before 1971, which was backed by gold. Foreign governments were able to take their U. S. currency and exchange it for gold with the U. S. Federal Reserve. If we think about this relationship between money and gold, we can gain some insight into how money gains its alue: like the beaver pelts and dried corn, gold is valuable purely because people want it. It is not necessarily useful – after all, you can’t eat it, and it won’t keep you warm at night, but the majority of people think it is beautiful, and they know others think it is beautiful. Gold is something you can safely believe is valuable. Before 1971, gold therefore served as a physical token of what is valuable based on people’s perception. Money is any object or record, that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context.

The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange; a unit of account; a store of value; and, occasionally, a standard of deferred payment. Any kind of object or secure verifiable record that fulfills these functions can serve as money. Money originated as commodity money, but nearly all contemporary money systems are based on fiat money. Fiat money is without intrinsic use value as a physical commodity, and derives its value by being declared by a government to be legal tender; that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment within the boundaries of the country, for “all debts, public and private”.

Everybody knows the value of money. Nothing is more powerful than money. In fact, if we have no money, we cannot buy goods, clothes and other necessaries we need. Without money, we cannot go to the movies, theaters or other amusements places. How can we spend our free time pleasantly on rainy evenings without a color television in front of us? Music from a new hi-fi can relax us quickly after a hard day of work. But how can we satisfy our needs, our desires and our pleasures when we cannot afford to buy them? Thanks to money we can improve our spiritual activities easily.

We can go to any schools; any universities we like to further our knowledge. If our parents are wealthy and powerful we may be sent abroad to study. Moreover, we can enjoy pure happiness by contributing our money to Charity funds to help the poor, the wretched and the victims of other disasters. But money not only brings us the good but the bad as well. This accounts for much of the wickedness in the world. The rich often depend on it to oppress the poor and millionaires sometimes treat their servants with great cruelty.

Many young people, being purse proud of their parent’s wealth and richness, neglect their school activities, always play truant and indulge themselves in alcohol, gambling and debaucheries. They often commit suicide after playing ducks and drakes with all their parents’ fortune. Money, in this way, is the root of all evils. To sum up, happiness does not depend on the quantity of money but on the way how we use it. We should use our money properly. The right use of money may bring us a comfortable life and a cheerful heart. What were you taught about money as you were growing up?

Something like “money doesn’t grow on trees”, or “money is the root of all evil”, or maybe “all rich people are greedy”? The key is to start thinking that you deserve the money and that there is lots of it available for you, and then you can start attracting it into your life. That’s abundance thinking, which is the opposite of lack or scarcity thinking. When you start thinking about the abundance the Law of Attraction will do the rest. You do not need to know how it is going to happen just make the first step, first thought. Starting is already winning. And what about thinking that “money is the root of all evil”? Can you really expect to become a success if you believe that money is the root of all evil?

Unless you have a desire to be an evil person, your subconscious will not let you have money if you believe deep down that it is the root of all evil. By the way, that quote is taken out of context in the first place. It was originally stated as “the love of money is the root of all evil”. So it has nothing to do with the money itself. Now that you understand that, you can start to think that money is in fact good. You can help people with money. You can stimulate the economy with money. Even the most kind-hearted spiritual person, who says they don’t eed money, can do more to make the world a better place with money than without it. And what about thinking that “all rich people are greedy”? Well, that creates us versus them, whereby you have labeled all of “them” greedy in your mind. You, on the other hand, are very giving in your mind. That’s why you don’t have money, because you’re not greedy. Sure, there must be some rich people in the world who are greedy. But there are also poor people who are greedy. There are both rich and poor people who are very giving as well. The amount of money you have has nothing to do with these character traits.

In fact, a lot of rich people got there by not being greedy. Having a giving attitude opens up a flow of money that often brings them more. You will find the same thing… give away money joyfully to a friend, and notice that it comes back to you in some other form. The world needs to be a balance of give and take, and being joyful both as you give and receive will ensure that you always go with the flow. And changing your mindset from what you were taught as a child to a healthier view of money will allow you to become the financial success you deserve to be, to become real you.

Sometimes and I say sometimes, your interests change I mean you add new interests to your old ones. This is a desirable and an expected change. SOCOND TYPE: negative change:

As a consequence, people as their income rise and as their living standards go up, their surrounding change, they can’t still go out with their old buddies’ coz they don’t share common interests with or because they seek wealthier friends, this is a negative change. Money mustn’t change the way you look at your people, it is possible that with money you’d have new interests and new friends but you can’t replace your old buddies, never but unfortunately some people fall into this pattern. Having lots of money can be like a drug.

It can make you feel powerful and giddy (frivolous). It can convince you that everything’s going to be okay. Years ago they asked the great fighter Joe Louis what he thought about money, and he said, “I don’t like money very much, but it calms my nerves. ” Money makes us unjustifiably feel that we’re better and more important than we really are. When money can make you feel humble (umile – modesto), then I think it’s really useful. But if it fattens your ego, which it often does, then look out. That way lays madness.

That’s what all the Greek tragedies are about — hubris — and that’s part of the problem with money. It is greatness, it is power, it is beauty. Money is about love and relationships. It has a wonderful power to bring people together as well as tear them apart. You can’t escape money. If you run from it, it will chase you and catch you. No worrying about money anymore. No worrying about how you will afford your mortgage (assuming you have one) and toys, OH boy the toys!

But in reality, being rich isn’t like that. There’s always good and bad in every situation.

Most people aren’t actually born rich. The vast majority of people who end up rich build their wealth themselves. This usually involves a business or several. Owning your own business is hard work and long hours.

Most entrepreneurs end up working significantly more than their peers and employees. This added responsibility makes a big difference in the lives of the rich and wealthy. Not only are they responsible for their business but if they have employees they need to be actively taking care of their needs as well.

Taking care of employee needs doesn’t stop at a paycheque; there are taxes and salaries based on the economy, yielding the highest pay possible for your employees while still maintaining your business’ sustainability. Then, trying to provide security for your employees in the fashion of pension plans, health benefits, etc.

This is of course on top of those same responsibilities that the wealthy have for themselves and their family except for one thing. They have to take care of that all on their own. As a business owner, they don’t have someone setting up and maintain a pension plan for them.

Assuming that the rich person(s) has investments such as Real Estate or paper Assets such as Stocks or Bonds adds a level of responsibility to understand their investments and be able to manage the money effectively. Even if the wealthy person has investment advisors, understanding how money works and how investments vary with taxes and different account management is important.

It’s hard to maintain wealth when you can’t manage your money. Someone else can only do so much and if everything is lost through a risky investment the people who were hired aren’t losing the money the investor is.

There has always been a separation between the rich and poor or middle class in regards to what they can afford. This gap can create a naive sense of the world especially for children who grow up in a rich or well of family.

The kids don’t get exposed to the challenges that arise when people don’t have money. These kids may also have more opportunities than the poorer families don’t have such as, going to ivy league schools or having brand-name clothes.

While materialistic views aren’t always the case when talking about the rich, opportunity has its advantages.

The ability to pay for the school to become a doctor isn’t available to everyone. Neither is the availability of better food. Some people are stuck eating what they can because they can’t afford the highest quality. This has health implications for both the rich and the poor.

While it may not seem like much, knowing you have better food than someone else can be the simplest distinction that can create mental separation between peers.

Some people will think that you’re rich so you must be materialistic, greedy, selfish, and many other nasty things. This can come about even if it’s the first time meeting this person. They have already pictured who you must be just because of your money.

Encountering people who automatically judge you based on your financial status or your parent’s financial status builds a wall between your own character and the judgments of your peers.

Over the past many years the media and politics have highlighted the gap that exists between the rich and the poor, referring to it as the 1%. This further separates rich people from the public because of the publicized view that the 1% own everything and the poor are taken advantage of.

Associating with “the Rich” becomes taboo and leads to people resenting anyone that seems rich or wealthy. This can lead to the wealthy only associating with other well-off people or the wealthy, avoiding other people so they don’t receive the same judgment from people who don’t know them.

Unfortunately, being rich is a lot of work. You have more responsibility as stated before but you also have to balance that with the rest of your life.

With the added stress from being judged not based on character, you will now have to work harder to be more compassionate. There is a stereotype that the rich aren’t compassionate towards people in lower socioeconomic classes.

While this may be true for some wealthy people, the vast majority of rich people are just like you, compassionate and understanding towards the struggles of life. But this isn’t always the case.

Some people who have built or received a certain level of wealth may have a difficult time empathizing with people in the lower classes. This isn’t isolated to just the rich either. The middle and lower class have the same challenge.

Furthermore, we may hold particularly negative views toward people who started out at a similar social class as we did but raised their relative socio-economic standing higher than we have. As a result of this envy, wealthy individuals may feel a sense of paranoia and be more secretive about their income and financial status.

The difference is that the “Financial Gap” is smaller and thus creates an easier flow of empathy because of similar economic challenges. Whereas the financial Challenges of the rich are vastly different than the poor.

Forgetting or not realizing that some people can’t afford shoes when a wealthy person may have a closet full challenges people’s compassion.

How much do you want to be rich? There are always good things but bad too. A substantial reason people don’t end up rich throughout their lives is that to create a certain level of wealth you need to sacrifice many things.

Time with family and friends will be lost, free time to play, and do what you want will be lessened. Just starting your own business almost guarantees you will need to be working more than any wage-earning employee. This is time away from the people you love.

Building wealth for the end result of having more time is one of the most common goals for people looking to become rich. After all, having money and not being able to enjoy it doesn’t sound very appealing. Unless its 6000 quarters but where would you get that many quarters?

While it is possible to build wealth and not sacrifice family, you will have to sacrifice other things. Time, in particular, there is never enough time to make money.

Sacrificing time is common when the result is betterment. Think about yourself for a moment, Would you work a few extra hours around Christmas Time or another holiday if it meant you could get your children something very special?

Odds are, you would consider it. I would, and I’d be happy to do it. This self-sacrifice is exactly what the wealthy are doing just it’s not a few hours for a week or two, to build true wealth it’s a constant sacrifice over a long time.

When I say “friends” they may not be your friend. It’s a funny thing about how money influences actions. People with a lot of money end up having others flock to them for multiple reasons.

If they can experience things that most cannot, friends will be around to enjoy those experiences and the rich person can pay for it. After all, they have money…..

This association with “you have money” so I want to hang out with you can lead to some very untrue friends or people trying to take advantage of the fact that you have money.

It doesn’t stop just with social interactions. Investing is a shark game, the waters are full of sharks and other fish. If you have $10 there is someone who “knows exactly what to do with it”. Now imagine having $10,000,000, there will be quite a few more people drawn to “advise” you on what to do with your money.

These friends may not be “helping” you in YOUR best interest. They may be helping themselves just you “benefit” from it. Which a good Robo Investor can do the same job for cheaper!

With more wealth comes more influence. This influence draws attention and brings people to them that may require a character judgment before being considered a friend.

You are better off stashing your money in a safe Savings Account or Money Market account from CIT than trusting everyone that comes around looking to use your money.

An unfortunate truth is that while being wealthy can create a more stable economic situation, the mental health of individuals can be affected. The stress of being “an outsider” from society is very influential because we all want to be accepted and treated equally.

When that isn’t the case and someone is treated differently just because of money it can develop into serious problems.

While most of us would believe that being in a financially dangerous place would make suicide more likely, the risk of suicide was found to decrease when people’s income decreased. This doesn’t mean that everyone rich has a higher chance of committing suicide, just that wealth and mental illness can affect risk.

More potential problems can arise for families with a high socioeconomic status (SES).

 Specifically, affluent youth reported significantly higher levels of anxiety across several domains and greater depression. They also reported significantly higher substance use than inner-city students, consistently indicating more frequent use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs.

Over the past several decades there have been more studies done on children of affluent or well off parents and mental illness. The studies are showing some staggering results based on stress, an expectation to achieve, and isolation from parents.

Just like the children, parents can have added stress areas based on their economic status. With more work, more sacrifices, and responsibilities, the stress adds up and can influence health and other areas.

Some level of stress in your life is good, but it needs to be balanced and not develop into other problems. Stress from running a business, trying to be fit and healthy, spending time with family.

The sense of being rushed all the time can grow into anxiety and a cycle of downward mental health. This can lead to addictions or other vices.

Now, there are ways to help reduce stress, being philanthropic, and caring about the common good can help. Giving is a great way to show appreciation and create a feeling of generosity.

Some extremely wealthy people such a Bill Gates step down from their active business to solely pursue philanthropy. While there will still be stress from working with others in an organization or helping in general, it can be used as a relief from the stress of not having time.

There’s a common problem when people have money thrust upon them. They don’t know what to do with it or how to handle it. Financial Literacy or lack of is one of the most common financial problems.

It’s a dream to win the lottery or have some long lost uncle who passes away and leaves you a fortune of unimaginable size. The freedoms that being rich can offer!

While it would be amazing, it’s not very common. That being said, it does happen, and people aren’t prepared.

After all, do you really think you will win the lottery?

The rich tend not to bet on the lottery, they “bet” on investments. They learn and understand how money works and how to use it. When someone buys a lottery ticket and wins, they may not know how money works or they’d probably be rich already.

So what do people do when they have wealth thrust upon them? Spend it!

Of course, they do, they just won $1,000,000, and now they want to party! But that’s not a very sustainable way of managing money. Many will pay off debt maybe buy a few things and invest the rest but others can take full advantage and have income for generations.

This requires a level of understanding such as how compound investing works . Or, why letting your money sit in the bank may not be a great idea.

Protecting your wealth isn’t a concern for many people because they don’t have the level of wealth that they want and this leads to a potential situation where people end up losing the money they inherit or have thrust upon them.

Financial education is the cure but isn’t easily learned on short notice.

Having more money than other people can make you feel guilty and sad. It’s quite common and is one of the main reasons people with wealth end up doing a lot of good for their communities.

They donate to charities and events, provide help to those less fortunate and try to spread their wealth to those who need it. If they didn’t there may be some guilt in their lives knowing what they have and seeing people who may not be able to afford shoes for their kids.

Fortunately, there is always a good cause around that you can help with. Kids can always use help to get more involved in sports or camps. The homeless shelters are in constant need of resources.

Feeling guilty can be used for good but it can also have a negative effect if you were to not act on it.

Being Rich is having a lot of money. True Wealth is having money and time.

Balance is the spice of life that makes life special. You probably don’t want to be 770 years old with poor health, that’s a lifetime journey, something that can’t be fixed by eating a salad when you are old and ignoring the earlier years.

Finding time for proper nutrition and exercise is a part of life, as is work and family. Making time for family will enrich your life way beyond being rich.

Kids, a husband/wife, influence our mood and happiness. Sharing your time with them can become difficult when you have so many obligations to work or business creating this wealth.

Every aspect of your life takes time. Finding and balancing things when you have more responsibilities is a challenge of epic proportions.

Building your wealth is hard enough, knowing that your life will never be the same when you have money can change the way you perceive being rich. Why work so hard to become rich just to be burdened with so much?

Is entrepreneurship even worth it? Does it make life easier?

My billionaire friend does face those issues I think. But multimillionaires generally do not in my opinion. I think those are the province of the ultra rich, not of the millionaires next door who lead conventional lives mostly. I can’t imagine feeling guilty for having the good luck of having accumulated a few million and for being smart enough to hang on to it.

yes, I agree, most millionaires may not run into some of these problems. Now, this is knowing that most next-door millionaires have accumulated a net worth of $1,000,000+ from an appreciating house or property combined with some investments. ie. a house with a value of $500k+ and $500k in investments. Next door millionaires are lucky that they probably won’t have the “guilt” so to speak with having accumulated wealth.

It is very possible that people with a much higher net worth can feel this way though. I don’t mean that feeling some guilt is a bad thing, quite the contrary. The feeling of guilt can be attributed to compassion and empathy towards people who aren’t as fortunate or in as secure of a financial position.

We don’t have any millionaires next door. I know a lot of ppl and the richest ones probably make about 200k per year. There are not many millionaires. there are billions of poor people. sounds like you might be one of those naive “privileged” people.

Not even close, I’m very middle class but I appreciate the potential available to all of us to break out of the middle or lower class and achieve dreams.

  • It’s a store of value. Cash is more than just a payment instrument. It allows people to hold money for saving purposes without default risk. Gender pay gap in U.S. hasn’t changed much in two decades

The gender gap in pay has remained relatively stable in the United States over the past 20 years or so. In 2022, women earned an average of 82% of what men earned, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time workers. These results are similar to where the pay gap stood in 2002, when women earned 80% as much as men.

As has long been the case, the wage gap is smaller for workers ages 25 to 34 than for all workers 16 and older. In 2022, women ages 25 to 34 earned an average of 92 cents for every dollar earned by a man in the same age group – an 8-cent gap. By comparison, the gender pay gap among workers of all ages that year was 18 cents.

While the gender pay gap has not changed much in the last two decades, it has narrowed considerably when looking at the longer term, both among all workers ages 16 and older and among those ages 25 to 34. The estimated 18-cent gender pay gap among all workers in 2022 was down from 35 cents in 1982. And the 8-cent gap among workers ages 25 to 34 in 2022 was down from a 26-cent gap four decades earlier.

The gender pay gap measures the difference in median hourly earnings between men and women who work full or part time in the United States. Pew Research Center’s estimate of the pay gap is based on an analysis of Current Population Survey (CPS) monthly outgoing rotation group files ( IPUMS ) from January 1982 to December 2022, combined to create annual files. To understand how we calculate the gender pay gap, read our 2013 post, “How Pew Research Center measured the gender pay gap.”

The COVID-19 outbreak affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, especially in 2020 and 2021, limiting in-person data collection and affecting response rates. It is possible that some measures of economic outcomes and how they vary across demographic groups are affected by these changes in data collection.

In addition to findings about the gender wage gap, this analysis includes information from a Pew Research Center survey about the perceived reasons for the pay gap, as well as the pressures and career goals of U.S. men and women. The survey was conducted among 5,098 adults and includes a subset of questions asked only for 2,048 adults who are employed part time or full time, from Oct. 10-16, 2022. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

The  U.S. Census Bureau has also analyzed the gender pay gap, though its analysis looks only at full-time workers (as opposed to full- and part-time workers). In 2021, full-time, year-round working women earned 84% of what their male counterparts earned, on average, according to the Census Bureau’s most recent analysis.

Much of the gender pay gap has been explained by measurable factors such as educational attainment, occupational segregation and work experience. The narrowing of the gap over the long term is attributable in large part to gains women have made in each of these dimensions.

Even though women have increased their presence in higher-paying jobs traditionally dominated by men, such as professional and managerial positions, women as a whole continue to be overrepresented in lower-paying occupations relative to their share of the workforce. This may contribute to gender differences in pay.

Other factors that are difficult to measure, including gender discrimination, may also contribute to the ongoing wage discrepancy.

Perceived reasons for the gender wage gap

When asked about the factors that may play a role in the gender wage gap, half of U.S. adults point to women being treated differently by employers as a major reason, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in October 2022. Smaller shares point to women making different choices about how to balance work and family (42%) and working in jobs that pay less (34%).

There are some notable differences between men and women in views of what’s behind the gender wage gap. Women are much more likely than men (61% vs. 37%) to say a major reason for the gap is that employers treat women differently. And while 45% of women say a major factor is that women make different choices about how to balance work and family, men are slightly less likely to hold that view (40% say this).

Parents with children younger than 18 in the household are more likely than those who don’t have young kids at home (48% vs. 40%) to say a major reason for the pay gap is the choices that women make about how to balance family and work. On this question, differences by parental status are evident among both men and women.

Views about reasons for the gender wage gap also differ by party. About two-thirds of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (68%) say a major factor behind wage differences is that employers treat women differently, but far fewer Republicans and Republican leaners (30%) say the same. Conversely, Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say women’s choices about how to balance family and work (50% vs. 36%) and their tendency to work in jobs that pay less (39% vs. 30%) are major reasons why women earn less than men.

Democratic and Republican women are more likely than their male counterparts in the same party to say a major reason for the gender wage gap is that employers treat women differently. About three-quarters of Democratic women (76%) say this, compared with 59% of Democratic men. And while 43% of Republican women say unequal treatment by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap, just 18% of GOP men share that view.

Pressures facing working women and men

Family caregiving responsibilities bring different pressures for working women and men, and research has shown that being a mother can reduce women’s earnings , while fatherhood can increase men’s earnings .

Employed women and men are about equally likely to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially and to be successful in their jobs and careers, according to the Center’s October survey. But women, and particularly working mothers, are more likely than men to say they feel a great deal of pressure to focus on responsibilities at home.

About half of employed women (48%) report feeling a great deal of pressure to focus on their responsibilities at home, compared with 35% of employed men. Among working mothers with children younger than 18 in the household, two-thirds (67%) say the same, compared with 45% of working dads.

When it comes to supporting their family financially, similar shares of working moms and dads (57% vs. 62%) report they feel a great deal of pressure, but this is driven mainly by the large share of unmarried working mothers who say they feel a great deal of pressure in this regard (77%). Among those who are married, working dads are far more likely than working moms (60% vs. 43%) to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially. (There were not enough unmarried working fathers in the sample to analyze separately.)

About four-in-ten working parents say they feel a great deal of pressure to be successful at their job or career. These findings don’t differ by gender.

Gender differences in job roles, aspirations

Overall, a quarter of employed U.S. adults say they are currently the boss or one of the top managers where they work, according to the Center’s survey. Another 33% say they are not currently the boss but would like to be in the future, while 41% are not and do not aspire to be the boss or one of the top managers.

Men are more likely than women to be a boss or a top manager where they work (28% vs. 21%). This is especially the case among employed fathers, 35% of whom say they are the boss or one of the top managers where they work. (The varying attitudes between fathers and men without children at least partly reflect differences in marital status and educational attainment between the two groups.)

In addition to being less likely than men to say they are currently the boss or a top manager at work, women are also more likely to say they wouldn’t want to be in this type of position in the future. More than four-in-ten employed women (46%) say this, compared with 37% of men. Similar shares of men (35%) and women (31%) say they are not currently the boss but would like to be one day. These patterns are similar among parents.

IELTS Advantage Disadvantage Model Essay

Below is an IELTS advantage / disadvantage model essay about having one language in the world. The essay is estimated at band score 9.

The development of tourism contributed to English becoming the most prominent language in the world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only language to be spoken globally. What are the advantages and disadvantages to having one language in the world?

It is thought by some people that English, which is now the most widely spoken language in the world, may one day predominate over all other languages and result in their eventual disappearance. Having one language would certainly aid understanding and economic growth but there will also be some drawbacks.

One evident benefit to having one global language is that it would enable greater understanding between countries. In other words, if everyone spoke one language, there would be complete understanding between not only countries but all people throughout the world which would promote learning, the flow of information and ideas. Another reason that one language would be advantageous is that it would help economic growth. With all people speaking the same language, there would be fewer barriers and therefore trade would flourish between countries, resulting in a healthier world economy.

On the other hand, there are obvious disadvantages to having only one global language. Firstly, it would mean that all other languages would eventually disappear and, along with them, their cultures. The diversity of cultures is one of the joys this world has to offer. Each culture is unique with its own way of life and own perspectives of the world which would all be lost if there were only one language.  Secondly, it would result in the collapse of tourism because there would be no reason to travel for pleasure and interest if all countries had the same language and similar cultures. This would devastate many countries economically that rely on tourism as a source of income.

In conclusion, while there are plus points to having one global language, too much would be lost as a result. Maintaining local languages and cultures should be prioritised to ensure a rich world heritage for future generations.

Comments: This sample answer addresses the task fully and provides relevant, well extended ideas. All aspects of cohesion is well managed. Vocabulary is flexible and there is a good range of complex sentence structures.

Having one language world wide can developed economy and become the stregnth. This has been by few people that with one language individuals can easily communicate with various countries people but there are also some drawbacks to having one language.

Firstly, There are a lot of benefits to having one language. To explain this it would be become easier to economical growth people having more job oppourtnity one’s can easily get job in another country and travel world. Moreover there would chance to rid of poverty in order to having more job oppourtnities. For instance as per the survey there are a lot of languages worldwide and people facing difficulties while having conversation with others therefore they would not be able to explore. Thus having one language more advantages in order to becoming similar on the earth.

On the other side, There are some drawbacks to have one language globally. To eloborate this many people visit to foreign countries to explore activities. Therefore, there would be less tourism because of having one language people will not be more interested to travel besides of this people having their own language which make sense for others. For example, India is a diverse country and there is different language after every 10 km. That is why people would lose their culture and heritage, customs. people having their own thoughts and feeling would have forget To conclude this, English language is one of the most popular language in any kind of business. Having one language can effect on people behaviour and their way of communicate.

However, you didn’t mention the concept of development of tourism in introduction. Is this ok to skip that as i know, we should include every information from the question.

The essay questions is “The development of tourism contributed to English becoming the most prominent language in the world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only language to be spoken globally.”. As you see, there are two sentences. The first one is a background which is factual. It doesn’t require a discuss or your opinion. The second sentence is an opinion “some people think ….” – this is what you are replying to in your essay. Not every essay has two statements like that. So, make a note if you find one that does and make sure you are discuss the right part of the essay question.

What type of essay is this? (advantages and disadvantage) some other.

Teachers can give essays different names. I called this a Direct Question essay where your task is to answer one or two particular questions. This is similar to “do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages”. You need to evaluate and give your opinion about whether it is good or bad.

(ii) This was adv and disadv essay, and it was not required to give your opinion, according to the essay question. Then why did you write in the conclusion that a lot will be lost. 1) Just because you use first and second does not mean you must use lastly. Also using first and second within a paragraph can be helpful, but not between paragraphs because it is too mechanical for a high score. 2) Putting a final comment in the conclusion is fine, it could be an opinion, prediction or suggestion. But you never put an additional opinion in the conclusion as a final comment if your entire essay is opinion based.

The instruction was “Do you think the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages?” So I stated my opinion that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. And I write two body paragraphs for two advantages. I include the idea that disadvantage is not big in these body paragraphs. But I am concerned that should I write one full body paragraph for disadvantage? Or supporting my opinion is fine since I stated that disadvantage is not that strong.

You are marked on your logical organisation of information into paragraphs. Having both advantages and disadvantages mixed up in a body paragraph isn’t going to help your score for Coherence & Cohesion. Separating ideas into body paragraphs is essential. However, that is only one part of Coherence & Cohesion, and it won’t affect your score for the other marking criteria.

Dear Madam, I found the below topic confusing. I can’t decide whether it refers back to “Do you agree or disagree” in which we ought to focus on only one side of the essay topic and forget the other side, or the “Advantages and Disadvantages” where we should discuss both sides. If the latter is correct, which I don’t think so, then we should cover both sides of two topics (living in a house and apartment) which would be a very long essay and unwanted in IELTS. Some people prefer to live in a house, while others feel that there are more advantages to living in an apartment. Are there more advantages than disadvantages of living in a house compared with living in an apartment. (Test 1, General Training, Volume # 7, IELTS Cambridge Series)

This is a very unusual question to get in IELTS because it is complicated and too lengthy. Most essays contain instructions which are more simple such as “Discuss both sides and give your opinion” or “Do you agree” or “What are the advantages and disadvantages?”. So, before I explain I will say that although this question is found in an IELTS Cambridge test books, which makes the question authentic, it is very uncommon to get any such question. The first thing to tackle in your mind are – what are the advantages to living in a house than living in a flat. Examples: internal space, privacy, outside spaces which flats generally don’t have. The downside would be – cost more than the countryside and there are fewer houses available in cities compared to rural areas. With these ideas planned. We then think about structuring the essay using these ideas and addressing the task. We can see that generally there are more advantages and less disadvantages. So, we will present the advantages in one body paragraph and provide simple comparison points such as “a house is more spacious than a flat” and then state the disadvantages in another body paragraph. We will present the opinion in the introduction and conclude it as well. So, you can see that although the essay question is written differently, it is an outweigh essay with simple comparisons. The reason for English developing into the most well-known language in the world owes to the advancement of tourism, leading some people to speculate that it will be the sole spoken language globally. One of the main benefits would be the improvements in communications, while the lack of diversity would be the drawback if English became the only language in the world.

The greatest benefit from having a single worldwide language is that people can understand each other more than they used to. Not only is this beneficial, but this also means that information would be easily exchanged between different cultures; for instance, many people would have been more educated if they had been given access to education materials in a language that they can understand. For these reasons, it would be more useful to have the same language as everyone else in the world.

It could be argued that despite the benefits, one of the most appealing sides of diversity, the mother tongue of other cultures, would be lost. Following this, the tourism industry, which relies on showcasing different atmospheres created by the variety in languages, would suffer the consequences. Travellers would become bored more easily and their desires to visit other places would reduce. Take the latest research findings as an example; conclusion therein states that countries which lost their mother tongue have seen to have fewer annual visitors than their counterparts. Thus, there would be some problems when it comes to uniting the entire planet under one language.

In conclusion, while there are some downsides to having a global language, it would still be beneficial for the majority. Hence, convincing societies to switch to English should be our priority for the better of the posterity.

It is possible to provide a final comment in your conclusion which might be an opinion, a prediction or suggestion. However, in an opinion essay, you would not present a new opinion in this way.

You still need to say which is more dominant. You must present a clear position. It doesn’t mean you must choose only one, but you must be clear which outweighs more than the other.

In this essay I will illustrate the positive and negative impacts of speaking one language on both individuals and countries.

Having a language dates back to the earliest centuries of human beings’ lives. It has always been needed for people to understand each other and communicate. Various languages are spoken in many countries. It is arguable, that the increasingly enhanced tourism actions are empowering the English language, because tourists can use it wherever their destination is to explain their needs. This is due to the indulgence of it in all schools and universities curriculums worldwide. A small group of individuals believe that this will lead to a world with only one spoken language, which is English. This may have several merits such as a world described to be a close-knit community and less education expenses. However, it would badly affect the traditions of local cultures, in addition to the deterioration of countries’ economies.

A world controlled by people speaking one common language would be stronger, with notable education cost reduction. Many researches and projects are held on an international level. This emphasizes the importance of complete understanding and communication that will enhance the final outcome. For instance, according to an article released in 2019, many businesses have extended their cooperation with other companies all over the world, with the use of English. Hence, it could be justified that parents spend a lot of money, about half of their salaries, for teaching their children a second language, which is mostly English in non-English speaking countries. This can be explained by the enormous spreading of its usage and demand in all different nations. Thus, if it was the only language taught in schools, there would be no need to pay extra money to learn it. As the Netherlands has become an English speaking country, this fact has helped its citizens to save more than a quarter of their yearly income.

On the other hand, traditions and values will be affected negatively with the disappearance of local languages. All customs and history are inherited from generation to generation via books and stories that are better transmitted using domestic alphabits. The globalization of English will break down all the history of ancient tribes. In India, all traditions are connected with songs and festivals, which depend incredibly on slang and proverbs. Nevertheless, these cultural distinctions are the major attraction to tourists. Individuals will find it inessential to visit a country with a similar history and inheritance. For instance, American people tend to buy tours to European countries ten times more than taking a holiday to the UK, as stated in the sun daily journal.

To conclude, English is becoming increasingly significant, as a result, there will be one monocultural nation controlling the Earth, with no need for extra fees paid for linguistic lessons, yet with a fragile economy, and eroding traditions.

Nowadays, the tourism industry has developed on large scale because of easy transportation services and technological advancement. The biggest advantage of this will be that all the people around the world will have only one language to follow. This will help the traveler to communicate easily and get the desired help in an unknown place. Although, the disadvantage of having a single speaking language is that every community wants to preserve its essence of culture and traditions. In ‘advantages-disadvantages’ essays, what if one don’t think there isn’t any advantages or disadvantages ? In the sample esssay, you tell the advantages in one body paragraph, and you tell the disadvantages in the following paragraph then you give your own statement in the conclusion (if I understand correctly.) But, what if you think there isn’t any disadvantages of monoculture and having one, predominant language in the world and you totally believe that this is how it should be ? Do pupils pretend that they think there are both advantages and disadvantages ?

This type of essay isn’t about your opinion. It is about presenting the information that IELTS are requesting. You are requested to present the advantages and the disadvantages – you must do that. It is part of the Task Response marking criterion. Furthermore, you now know that many IELTS essays will request you to do this. It isn’t a surprise. This means it should be part of your preparation to prepare ideas for topics and that includes advantages and disadvantages of various world concerns or trends.

The importance of English language which was always debatable has now become more controversial with many people claiming that it is beneficial while other reject this nation. The substational influence of this trend has sparked controversy over the potential impact in recent years. This is the “outweigh” essay. The instructions say: Do the advantages of X outweigh the advantages of Y. So, just approach it with the normal approach for the adv/disadv outweigh essay.

Hi Liz, is it okay to say in the introduction statement that “both the advantages and disadvantages of this development will be elaborated in this essay?”

Sounds very much like a learned phrase that you can apply to any adv/disadv essay. This doesn’t help your score increase. This is a language test and each sentence should be unique to yourself. Try to avoid memorising sentences to fill your essay. Also the examiner knows you will elaborate the advs and disadvs – the examiner has the instructions as well. You don’t need to repeat the instructions. So, it’s really a waste of time focusing on such sentences which are not needed and won’t increase your score. There are much more important things to focus on in your writing task 2 preparation.

Hi Liz! My ielts teacher (not a native speaker of English) said it’s better to avoid using words like” firstly””secondly”, because it is like ” chidren’s essay “. But you are still using them in your essay. Is it true?

They are perfectly fine to use and certain not children’s language. However, try not to use them at the start of each paragraph to avoid “mechanical linking” which is a feature of band 6 for Coherence and Cohesion. Using them within a paragraph is fine. But use them once only.

Their are few disadvantages as well related with the notion. Every country has a cultural and native language which it is renowned for. For example, Europe is famous for French which has a major significance for the country. India has several cultural languages which it is famous for. Having the same language will not inculcate learning native language for the children and youth of the country. It is vital to stay grounded to your roots.The employement rate for attendant, translators will decrease. The history of the country will be hampered leading to no room of learning. I would like you to ask you about main ideas and supporting details. Many teachers say that you should have only one main idea per paragraph and support it with your supporting ideas. So, for example, for advantages and disadvantages type of questions they recommend firstly find all ideas for advantages and disadvantages and after group them into main ideas and write one paragraph for each main ideas.But, in your eassay there is one paragraph for advantages and one paragraph for disadvantages. Is it ok to write paragraphs without main ideas? I am just confused about different style of essays.

The examiner is looking for logical organisation which means all advantages together and all disadvantages together. Furthermore, the marking criteria states that paragraphs should have a central topic – which means all advantages together. Many teachers get confused about this because they think a central topic must be a central idea – but that is not actually the case. It is about a central topic.

The English language has developed over the years to become one of the most recognized and popular languages all over the world. With the onset of tourism, people are connecting and interacting with different cultures and languages and English has become the preferred mode of communications. Hence, this has lead to speculations that the diversity of language spoken would become affected. While I do agree that English unites most people and allow for improved communications and sharing of knowledge, I find all languages to be rich in culture, beauty and individualism and it is highly unlikely that they would become extinct over time.

With twenty-first century becoming more globalized, there is a greater need for common ground understanding and communications with different people from all over the world. This has inspired people to pick up a second or third language and English is really popular among people. This is significant, as it allows for better sharing of knowledge, information and culture and helps bring more understanding in the world.

On the other hand, it is important to preserve different languages, as it is our culture and roots. If the world were to be left with English language, we may become less tolerable of different diversity and lose our individualism. In addition, we may find ourselves losing touch and the ability to understand our histories and artefacts (which are written in other languages).

Furthermore, given the growing popularity for the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French and German languages, it becomes highly unlikely for English to be the only surviving language. People appreciate and admire the beauty and complexity with different languages and as such, I find it highly unlikely for humanity’s love for languages to die out.

In conclusion, despite the fact that having one language may improve communications, I believe that most people would agree that languages would make our world a more colourful and interesting place to be in.

In band descriptor of Writing there isnt any point explaining about idomatic language wherger we have to use or not. Yet, for speaking band descriptor explicitly mentions to use idomaric vocabulary. In your advanced lessons’ videos, u use few idomatic phrases, such as money does not grow on trees. As you are not only an IELTS teacher but also a native speaker, I have written some of your exact phrases, but my non-native tutor advised not to use them. Since I accept ur lessons more, how can I convince my teacher that they are not only ok, but also really good?

Any language I use in model essays or lessons about essay writing is fine to use for your IELTS essay. Less common idiomatic language is good for your score, but only when used appropriately.

If you have two questions, you must answer both. So in the first body paragraph, you state the disadvantages and in the second you would give your outweigh ideas. As you have only one paragraph for the outweigh – keep your position easy.

It is not used as a verb. It is not a (verb+ing). It is the same as writing “I’m looking forward to hearing from you”. This aspect of grammar should not be used unless you have been trained to use it.

That is a to- infinitive, the variation Liz used is at the object position of the sentence. Your website has been a great help to me and even though I’ve not gone through other IELTS website, I can confidently say your site is the best out of the lot. So, I attempted my first IELTS (General) on March 23,2019 after a one week prep to sit for the exams and that as you would’ve guessed didn’t go too well. I have been referring your website for clearing many IELTS, GT, Task2 related confusions, however, one confusion remains and, it has given me sleepless nights. It is regarding having one idea and developing/extending it or two ideas in one body paragraph.

I have seen your videos where you suggest to pick one idea, extend and support it to gain higher band. But, in your sample essays, more than often you have use two ideas in one body paragraph. You are confusing have one idea and having a central theme to the paragraph. You are being marked on your ability to group information into paragraphs which have a central theme. If you are giving advantages and disadvantages, a central theme would be all advantages in one body paragraph with disadvantages grouped in another. If you are presenting individual reasons for supporting your opinion, you would present each reason (each idea) in a separate body paragraph. So, your choice of structure and your paragraphing is flexible depending on what information you are presenting. This is what you are being marked on in Coherence and Cohesion.

Globally and due to tourism English has become so well known that some of us believe that, it would become the only spoken language in the world. While there are advantages in having one language such as the ease in conducting business, and improving communication among people, there are certain drawbacks such as erasing other languages, and loosing cultures identities.

Firstly, English has spread in many parts of the operational world and in particular in business. For example, many universities now are offering their postgraduate programs entirely in English. This allows international students to study and share research opportunities all in the same language. This benefit proves to be extremely rewarding as it unifies talents from all over the world and it enables students to grow in business endeavours together. Secondly, when conducting business, specifically, when it comes to transactions, it has been proven that bank operations in English are smooth and with less chances of making errors. Additionally, The Wall Street Journal has estimated that using English on the stock markets across the wold has saved expenses for many companies from translation costs as well it has substantially improved fast and easy communication. As a result, there is a clear confirmation that in business, it absolutely beneficial to use English as the main form of information.

However, there are some downsides to the notion of using one language. On the one hand, it gradually eradicates the potential to learn another language. For instance, because it is much easier when travelling or temporary visiting another country to use English instead of Spanish, people in general, lose the ability to attempt to learn a different language because they know that they can function with just applying English. A simple example, would be to communicate in English with a real estate agent in Spain, to purchasing a backpack in Germany, to even getting around with errands in China. Nonetheless, in the long run, this absolves you from the effort to learn the local language and as a result, one ends up living in a foreign country without learning to a greater extent about the culture. This appears to be only of disadvantage to us since we are not making progress in developing our skills. A study released from Harvard Psychology Magazine has found out that our brains are not as challenged by only relying on one language and therefore, they recommend continuous learning of other languages. Moreover, the notion of just having one language world-wide would definitely erase the character of many places, which we cherish as they are, for example, the authentic sound of French, the historical value of the Greek language, as well as the importance of medical terminology in Latin.

In conclusion, even though some purport to the idea that English is beneficial especially in business communications, others still think that it would eventually destroy other languages and ultimately eliminate the significance of other cultures.

Don’t change the content of the background. The essay question didn’t say anything about it being detrimental. It only stated a fact, not an opinion. So, you should paraphrase it exactly as it is: Some parents are indulgent and spend a lot of money buying toys for their children’s amusement. OR Some parents do not limit the number of toys they buy for their children’s amusement. OR Some children are indulged by their parents who buy them many toys to play with. (this option changes the order of information by starting with children rather than parents – this is a useful technique is paraphrasing is tough).

It would affect your score for Task Response which is 25% of your marks for task 2. Your score cannot be predicted. Your task was to choose adv more and disadv less OR adv less and disadv more. This was an “outweigh” essay.

Your website is wonderful. Please what does a note form look like? I’m going through road to ielts writing and I came across a part that said note form and bullet points are not allowed.

We write notes when we are short for time in a meeting, for example. They are not fully formed sentences – just notes. You should avoid writing like this and write with fully formed sentences which adhere to English grammar rules.

Whatever order you choose, make sure it is logical. This means that the order in the introduction follows the order of the body paragraphs. Organisation is marked on logic.

The question does not require you to provide your opinion (it only asks to mention what are the advantages and disadvantages), which i think means that you have to provide a neutral answer of both advantages and disadvantages. However, in the second sentence of your conclusion, do not you think that you are leaning towards one of the sides? Would not this contradict the requirement of the question to be relatively neutral? Am particularly concerned with the “should be prioritised”. What are your thoughts on this?

This is called a final comment – it is not a new point. It is possible that an opinion is a final comment as long as it is a neutral essay. A final comment is not actually necessary – it is optional.

For instance, in the past, many people would work as translators because each country would publish their discoveries in their native language. Having one language in the world, saves a lot of time as you don’t have to translate it from one language to another. It also allows for information to be shared much more efficiently.

In earlier generations, schools would teach their students the native language and offer foreign languages as an option. Consequently, schools now teach English and offer the native language as an option. As a result, many languages are being forgotten and lost. When Languages are lost, ancient cultures and stories written in that language are also lost.

In conclusion, one major advantage of learning one language in the world is that it saves a lot of time as you don’t have to translate from one language ti another. However, the disadvantage of learning one language in the world is that many languages and ancient cultures are forgotten and lost.

As I am currently studying this kind of essay, I came across this prompt from Cambridge IELTS 7. It says:

I am quite confused since I feel there are way more issues to address here. Here’s what I understood:

Issue 1: Living in an apartment: advantages and disadvantages Issue 2: Living in a house: advantages and disadvantages Issue 3: My answer to that question: are the advantages of living in an apartment more than the advantages of living in a house?

So if my position is: I think that living in an apartment has far fewer advantages than living in a house, how would I structure my body section? Should I talk about the disadvantages of living in an apartment in one paragraph then the advantages of living of in a house in another paragraph?

Your structure is too complicated. You seem to think your opinion is separate from the advantages and disadvantages. It is not. Your whole essay is your opinion. This means you have only BP1 and BP2 as described above but written as your opinion. Always keep structure simple.

“I look forward to hearing from you” – it is 100% fine to do this “to + verbing”. The “to” is a preposition!!!! It is advanced grammar, don’t use it if you haven’t learned it.

I read somewhere, that Statistics must not be used as we are not giving a report but our thought/opinion, though i believe ‘Statistics’ is a better word. Also, please confirm if we can give false example to prove our point. For example, Statistics shows that 75% of women in London are working OR For example, Most women in London are working.

“statistics show that 75% …” is a learned phrase. This means it doesn’t help your score. The examiner doesn’t care what the percentages are. You don’t get a higher score because you have percentages. If your wrote “the overwhelming majority of women ..” that shows better language skills. Task 2 is an essay based on language, not a report.

Mandarin might be most native spoken language in the world (in population numbers of Chinese), but English is the most widely spoken language in the world, for example, Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic which falls into the top 5 most native speaking languages, some of them might take up or speak English as their second language, which in result makes English the most wide spoken and understood language in the world ! Hope this answers your question…but you are quite right, Mandarin/Chinese is the most spoken native language in the world ! A complex sentence in IELTS is considered a sentence that is not simple. So, for example, a sentence which contains one clause is considered a complex structure by an examiner. The biggest mistake students make is creating sentences that are too long and contain more and more clauses – one in enough and length should be controlled. Conjunctions, such as linking words, relate to the marking criteria of Coherence and Cohesion, which is 25% and also includes organisation of information and paragraphs as well as a good range of linking words. The world is relying more on computers, and computers have found use in various spheres of life including healthcare, forensic investigations, and even the auto pilot located on aircrafts. In my opinion, computers still have many other unexplored uses and I also believe that dependence on computers have more positive eventualities than negatives. It is worthwhile to approach the exploration of the positive attributes with caution. To begin with, in our everyday lives, computers will likely play more important roles as scientists discover more ways to apply its versatile nature. I foresee computers being used in environmental studies, for instance, measuring the amount of smog or soot in the atmosphere. Also, computers could likely replace guide dogs that walk people with visual impairment. Computers might be deployed to monitor ocean floor activities as part of an early warning system against earthquakes. In conclusion, It is very important to be cautious as we automate and computerize our everyday activities; this is to ensure that we do not become over reliant on the computer and lose out in the end.

I’m sure it is not up to scratch, but the questions are multiple and not the usual agree/disagree type. It is more of discussion type essay.

I have some concern with one advantage and disadvantage essay question, which state “Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this and give your opinion”. Should I follow the same structure of ” Do the advantanges outweigh the disadvantages”, in which the key is the thesis statement. Therefore, my essay will have two body paragraph which explain the advantages and disadvantages, then I explain my opinion with the side I agree with. Or can I have three body paragraph – one advantages, one disadvantages, and another disadvantages (or advantages) which clearly support my opinion. You would tackle it as “Discuss both sides and give your opinion”. However, adv & disadv essays usually say “What are the advs and disadvs?” – they don’t ask for an opinion as well. So, make sure you read the instructions very carefully.

It is possible to do it as a final comment. A final comment is the second sentence in the conclusion after you summarise the main points in your essay. It is not actually necessary to have a final comment. Having just one sentence which only summarises your ideas is fine.

Thank you! That’s what I did, but my teacher said that made it incoherent, so I thought I misunderstood the method in the model essay.

I think people get confused about having only one idea in a paragraph and having a central theme to the paragraph. For cause and solution essays, it’s the same. One paragraph for causes and one paragraph for solutions. The examiner is actually looking for logically organised ideas and it definitely logical to organise it in that way. After having lived the first 14 years of my life in an english speaking country, when asked to take the IELTS for immigration purposes, I focused on the test style, namely listening and reading, having given little thought to the writing aspect of the test, thinking it would be unnecessary. My overall band score was 8.5, however, the writing score was 6.5, and the department of immigration looks only at the lowest of all band scores. I just came to see one Discussion essay “Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion” . Can we follow the same structure of ” Discuss both views and give your own opinion ” in this case.

Yes, you would need to have one BP for the advantages of one method and then another body paragraph for the advantages of the other method. Your opinion would either be explained in a separate body paragraph if you agree with neither side or you can explain your opinion in the BP with the side you agree with. All the best Liz

I have one doubt The development of tourism contributed to english… This is the first line in topic, But i am not able to understand where you have paraphrased this line in introduction ? You have only mention tourism section in last line of 3 paragraph .

Because it is an extra piece of information that IELTS have added which is irrelevant to the topic. While native speakers are able to distinguish this, foreign language speakers might have a problem. Sorry if it confused you. Liz

I am not confused. I thought we have to give some detail regarding tourism contribution in making english a prominant language in world as first line of statement topic is important, But I am agree that it is not relevant to the main topic

I have one more doubt about model answers given in official book provided by IDP when we book IELTS exam. The format and techniques provided by you and other internet sources are not same with the model answers in that book . Your information regarding ielts exam seem so relevant but model answer in that book cannot be wrong as they are giveb by Organization conducted ielts exam. For instance , they have written examples in thier first paragraph.

( this is my second attempt. i got 8 – reading , 6.5 – speaking and listening , 5.5 – writing. My exam date is 19 sept and i am still confused. please clear this doubt .

The question asks you if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages so you need to give your answer and show that the advantages are more important than the disadvantages – that means you need to give details of both sides in order to support your answer. All the best Liz

Advantages and disadvantages of giving pocket money

Pocket money, should parents develop this habit at the tender age.

We only remember the daily arguments we would do with our parents that would be no less than an experienced legal professional for increasing our daily allowance. This daily allowance has the popular name "pocket money".

Pocket money is given to a child so that he may have some enjoyments of his choice within that amount of money. Very rightly pocket money gives a child a lesson of budget control. Keeping all expenses within a prescribed budget is a difficult task for a matured grown up as well as and so developing such awareness at a tender age is absolutely necessary. A person learns to get expertise from his mistakes. Budget control is a similar task. After exceeding ones predetermined budget couple of times a person would learn to keep the same within the budget. Similarly a child to taking his pocket money as his predetermined budget would learn to control his expenses. When a child is given his pocket money for the first time he would extravagantly spend the entire amount in short time. But gradually with passage of time with parental guidance, advice and scolding he would not only learn to keep his expenses within budget but also learn to save. And so parental supervision in a child's pocket money is extremely important.

The disadvantage behind giving a child, freedom in his expenses is he may opt for wrong things and it is also related to the company he keeps. Suppose a child has a bad company of friends and with his allowances he may go for smoking, drinking and other immoral activities out of curiosity with his friends.so, parental supervision and guidance is utmost necessary. Parents should give reasonable amount if allowance and only sometime little more as an appraisal for his child's performances in his academics or extracurricular activities. Pocket money can act as a motivational factor that is an extra remuneration to him for is brilliant performance in studies, sports, cultural activities etc. but the amount should not be abnormally high.

Again, a child lacks matured psychology that is he may not be able to understand the complexities of the society. Among his acquaintances he may find people coming from various classes, backgrounds and tastes. He may be under the proper guidance of his parents but some others may be not. He may have friends who receive abnormally high allowances and may be able to afford and enjoy things that this child is unable to. This creates a big problem. The child develops a grudge over his parents and suffers from low self-esteem. He may also adopt unfair means like stealing, bullying other children in order to raise his standard. A parent should also keep an eye on whether such situation has arisen and should not be rude with the child and explain to him the circumstances in a way that the child would understand as his judgmental power is not as justified as an adult. A parent should help him choose right friends. A parent also should help his child to learn his necessities as in order to get child of an out of budget product he may start saving by avoiding his necessities. In recent news we find a boy selling his kidney for an i-phone which his parents are unable to afford. Psychological counseling is required for a child in every step.

Thus as a conclusion it can be derived from the above analysis the lesson of "budget control" at a tender age will help a child to be expertise in the task only when he is under a close supervision of responsible parents who would suggest him ideas of budget control in his way. And no doubt such a practice from childhood will help him develop his own skills in the matter that would be immensely helpful for him in his future even when he would pass through adverse financial conditions.

So I sincerely feel that the parents should only provide a small emergency fund to their children so that they are left with a small window to peep into their ward's life and counsel him about what is right and what is wrong.

Everyone knows the value of money. There is nothing more powerful than money. If we do not have money.

we cannot buy the goods, clothes and other essential things we need. Without money, we cannot go to the cinema, theater, or other entertainment places.

How can we spend our free time pleasantly on rainy evenings without color television in front of us? The music of a new Hi-Fi can quickly relax us after a hard day's work. 

But how can we satisfy our needs, our desires, and our pleasures when we cannot afford to buy them?

With money, we can easily improve our spiritual activities. We can go to any school; Any university we want to advance our knowledge.

If our parents are rich and powerful then we can be sent abroad to study. Furthermore, we can enjoy pure happiness by contributing our money to charity funds to help the poor, the wretched, and the victims of other calamities

But money not only brings us well but also bad. It is responsible for a lot of wickedness in the world. 

The rich often depend on it to oppress the poor and the millionaires sometimes treat their servants with great cruelty. 

Many youths, taking pride in the wealth and prosperity of their parents, neglect their school activities, always play careless, and indulge themselves in alcoholism, gambling, and corruption. 

They often commit suicide by playing Duck and Drake with the fate of their parents. Thus money is the root of all evil.

In short, happiness does not depend on the amount of money but on the way we use it. We should use our money properly. Proper use of money can bring us a comfortable life and a cheerful mind.

There is no doubt that money plays the most important role in the world we live in. Money makes it easy and far and wide. If someone is lucky, he is lucky. 

However, having a pile of money has some advantages and disadvantages, as it is a double-edged sword. In the essay, I will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of having a lot of money.

The abundance of money has many benefits. Firstly, it makes one's life easier and more comfortable as he can buy what makes his life easier. 

He can lead a comfortable life while ensuring the facilities. Secondly, the affluent person can contribute to society. To give an example of what I mean, let's look at the issue of unemployment. 

He can create employment opportunities by setting up industries. Thus, with mountains of wealth, one person can be the savior of hundreds of unemployed youth. 

Another important thing to remember, in our capitalist society, the amount of money determines the social status of the individual. A person with an abundance of wealth may enjoy a prestigious social position.

However, like everything, money also has a dark side. More often than not, a lot of money can change human behavior. It can make people arrogant. 

A friendly person can turn into an unpleasant person. On top of that, money often leads to an addiction to getting more money. 

Due to this, a person can use unfair means to earn more money. Thus, the abundance of money can be a catalyst for committing many bad deeds.

Overall everyone wants money at any cost. Money keeps us alive in this modern world. Without it, we have to face many problems, while the heap of money destroys our life. Unfortunately, it's a money dilemma.

Donald Trump had a frustrating day in court on Tuesday. Even with an abbreviated day for the Passover holiday, there was a one-two punch of a morning hearing about possible gag order violations and the testimony about the “catch-and-kill” deals to bury negative stories about the former president during the 2016 election.

Former tabloid publisher David Pecker will return to the stand on Thursday after court is dark on Wednesday. He has spoken now about two of the three catch-and-kill deals — but not adult film star Stormy Daniels, which is likely coming on Thursday.

Here are key takeaways from Tuesday’s day in court:

  • Gag order hearing goes badly for Trump: Judge Juan Merchan issued the gag order before the trial began, limiting Trump from publicly discussing witnesses, the jury, the district attorney’s staff and Merchan's family. He has not yet ruled on the district attorney’s motion to sanction Trump for allegedly violating the order, but it wasn’t hard to tell the judge’s sentiments. Merchan rejected the explanations that Trump attorney Todd Blanche offered for the offending posts after Trump’s attorney tried to argue that posts about Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen were political and not about the case.
  • Judge says Trump lawyers are "losing all credibility": Tensions continued to grow between Trump’s legal team and the trial judge during the gag order hearing. Merchan repeatedly asked Blanche to clarify examples of when Trump was specifically responding to attacks from Cohen and Daniels on social media and grew visibly frustrated when Blanche failed to comply. Last week, Merchan supported prosecutors when they refused to give Trump’s legal team notice of their witness list, saying he understood the sentiment given Trump’s social media attacks.
  • Pecker puts jury inside how AMI helped Trump in 2016 campaign: Pecker, who ran American Media Inc. during the 2016 election, testified for around two-and-a-half hours on Tuesday, walking jurors through how he worked with Cohen on Trump’s behalf to squash unflattering stories during the 2016 election. He testified about the “catch and kill” deals involving McDougal and Trump’s doorman. He said that he met with Trump and Cohen in 2015 where he agreed to be the “eyes and ears” of the campaign and look out for negative stories.
  • Pecker places Michael Cohen deep in the conspiracy: Pecker placed Cohen in the heart   of the alleged “catch and kill conspiracy” by testifying that Cohen was the go-between for Trump fielding media stories from Pecker since 2007. At the August 2015 Trump Tower meeting, Pecker said he would notify Cohen about negative stories. During Trump’s campaign in 2015 and 2016, Pecker said Cohen would also pitch stories about Trump’s political opponents and offer feedback on behalf of “the boss,” as Cohen referred to Trump.

Secret Service and other officials discussing what to do if Trump is jailed for contempt of court, sources say

The US Secret Service, court officers and even the New York City Department of Corrections have been quietly discussing what to do if former President Donald Trump ends up being jailed for contempt of court, officials familiar with the plans tell CNN.

In Trump’s civil trial , Judge Arthur Engoran held the former president in contempt a number of times for violating his orders – but imposed only monetary penalties. In Trump’s civil trial in federal courts in January, Judge Lewis Kaplan considered holding Trump in contempt of court. He strongly hinted that he would order the former president to be held in custody if there was another violation of his instructions.

While that didn’t happen, it did cause a stir within the Secret Service and the US Marshals Service as they had to figure out how they would handle logistics if the judge did put Trump in custody, the sources said. Agents scrambled to find an office or conference room for this purpose if they needed to.

In the hush money case, an assistant district attorney asked Judge Juan Merchan to consider jail time for Trump’s alleged acts of contempt. Since last week, Secret Service agents, court officers and NYPD detectives assigned to Trump's security detail have been discussing how that would be handled if it came to pass, though nothing was decided.

The one thing that was decided was that this was not a plan that should be made just by the court, the prosecutors and Trump’s lawyers, the sources said.

Instead, the Secret Service would want to be included in any discussions about how and where Trump is being held in custody — if that came to pass — simply because it would have to figure out how to carry out officers' protective obligations. 

Trump falsely claims “thousands” of his supporters were turned away outside of the courtroom

Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed on Tuesday that “thousands” of his supporters were “turned away” by police from the courthouse where his New York criminal hush money trial is taking place. 

In the same  Truth Social post , Trump attacked New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who wrote about Trump not being happy that only a handful of his supporters had shown up outside of the courthouse. 

Trump has issued public calls on social media for his supporters to show up outside of the courthouse to peacefully protest. 

“Thousands of people were turned away from the Courthouse in Lower Manhattan by steel stanchions and police, literally blocks from the tiny side door from where I enter and leave. It is an armed camp to keep people away. Maggot Hagerman of The Failing New York Times, falsely reported that I was disappointed with the crowds. No, I’m disappointed with Maggot, and her lack of writing skill, and that some of these many police aren’t being sent to Columbia and NYU to keep the schools open and the students safe,” Trump said. 

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins  has reported  that protestors are allowed outside the courthouse, but his supporters have just been small in number.

On Tuesday, former American Media Inc. CEO David Pecker  testified about his August 2015 meeting with former President Donald Trump.

Pecker said he agreed to be the “eyes and ears” for Trump’s campaign and flag any negative stories to Trump’s then-fixer Michael Cohen.

CNN compiled a timeline of the key events leading up to the historic trial. Read up on the moments below:

  • September 2016: Donald Trump discusses a $150,000 hush money payment understood to be for former Playboy model Karen McDougal with Michael Cohen who secretly records the conversation . McDougal has alleged she had an extramarital affair with Trump beginning in 2006, which he has denied.

  • October 27, 2016: According to prosecutors, Cohen pays Stormy Daniels $130,000 through her attorney via a shell company in exchange for her silence about an affair she allegedly had with Trump in 2006. This $130,000 sum is separate from the $150,000 paid to McDougal. Trump has publicly denied having any affairs and has denied making the payments. 
  • November 8, 2016: Trump secures the election to become the 45th president of the United States. 
  • February 2017: Prosecutors say Cohen meets with Trump in the Oval Office to confirm how he would be reimbursed for the hush money payment Cohen fronted to Daniels. Under the plan, Cohen would send a series of false invoices requesting payment for legal services he performed pursuant to a retainer agreement and receive monthly checks for $35,000 for a total of $420,000 to cover the payment, his taxes and a bonus, prosecutors alleged. Prosecutors also allege there was never a retainer agreement.

Fact check: Trump falsely describes gag order restrictions

Upon leaving the courtroom on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump approached media cameras, began talking, and complained that he is “not allowed to talk.” 

Trump was criticizing Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order on him. Merchan had held a hearing on Tuesday morning to consider prosecutors’ allegations that Trump violated the gag order with a series of  online posts , including some in which the presumptive Republican presidential nominee  shared others’ articles related to the case  on social media.

Trump claimed, “Can’t even allow articles to be put in.” He claimed the articles he is referring to say “the case is a sham." He added, “I don’t even know if you’re allowed to put them in.” He also claimed that although others are permitted to lie and speak about him, “I’m not allowed to say anything.”

“I’d love to talk to you people, I’d love to say everything that’s on my mind, but I’m restricted because I have a gag order," Trump said.

Facts First :  As he  has before , Trump made Merchan’s gag order sound far broader than it is. The  gag order  does not prohibit Trump from declaring the case a sham or from sharing others’ claims that the case is a sham. It also does not prohibit Trump from speaking to the media about the case, from defending his conduct at issue in the case, from denouncing the judge and district attorney involved in the case, or from campaigning for the presidency with speeches, media interviews and online posts. Rather, the gag order forbids Trump from three specific categories of speech:

  • Speaking publicly or directing others to speak publicly about known or foreseeable witnesses, specifically about their participation in the case
  • Speaking publicly or directing others to speak publicly about prosecutors — other than Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg — including, staff members in Bragg's office and the court, and their family members if those statements are made with the intent to interfere with the case
  • Speaking publicly or directing others to speak publicly about jurors or prospective jurors

In his comments on Tuesday, Trump made the point that an article may have a certain headline that generally denounces the case but, “somewhere deep” in the body of the text, may mention somebody’s name he is not permitted to mention because of the gag order. It’s not clear how Merchan would view Trump having shared an article in which, say, a witness’s name was only mentioned deep in the text. To date, though, articles that prosecutors have alleged Trump violated the gag order by sharing  featured headlines  that made it entirely clear the articles discussed likely witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer.

Former tabloid executive David Pecker was back on the stand Tuesday to resume his testimony in the hush money trial against former President Donald Trump.

Pecker testified about a myriad of topics — but mainly established the substance of the August 2015 meeting at the crux of the “catch and kill” practice that is central to the case.

As the then-chairman of American Media Inc., which publishes the National Enquirer,  Pecker  was involved in numerous schemes to kill negative stories about Trump, and he allegedly helped broker the deal with Stormy Daniels.

Before Pecker returned to the stand, Judge Juan Merchan held a hearing on whether the former president violated the gag order in the hush money case. Under the order, Trump is barred from publicly discussing witnesses or jurors in the case. Merchan said he is reserving a decision on the gag order violations.

Court is not in session on Wednesday. The trial will resume Thursday morning.

Here are key moments from Pecker's testimony:

  • Relationship with Trump: Pecker said he has known Trump since the 80s and has had a “great relationship” with him over the years. He said that as a celebrity, Trump advised him on parties and events to attend and introduced him to various people in New York. The former tabloid executive said he saw Trump more frequently after he announced his 2016 presidential run.
  • Meeting at Trump Tower: The former tabloid publisher said he attended a meeting with Trump and Michael Cohen in August 2015 where he told Trump he would be his “eyes and ears.” Pecker said he offered to tell Cohen “about women selling stories” so that Cohen could have those stories killed or for someone to purchase them. The agreements with Trump were not put in writing , Pecker said.
  • Negative stories: Pecker said he would contact Cohen directly if he heard any negative stories about Trump or his family. He also testified that Cohen would request the Enquirer run negative stories about Trump’s political opponents. The Enquirer would also send articles to Cohen before they were published, Pecker said.
  • Trump’s business practices: Pecker testified that he saw Trump review and sign invoices and checks and described him as “very knowledgable” and almost “a micromanager” in business. He also described Trump as “very frugal” in his approach to money.
  • Pecker claims mutual benefit: Pecker testified that publishing negative stories about Trump’s opponents and alerting him about damaging information had a mutual benefit for the Enquirer and the campaign. Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass, though, pushed back and had Pecker confirm that stopping stories from being printed about Trump only benefited the campaign .
  • Headlines and documents enter evidence: The jury was shown a series of National Enquirer articles both praising Trump and attacking political opponents . Prosecutors also introduced AMI business records into evidence, including text messages.
  • First "catch and kill" story: Pecker said the first time he paid to kill a negative article about Trump was when he bought a story for $30,000 from a doorman who said Trump had fathered a child. Pecker said he decided to buy the story even after knowing it was false "it would have been very embarrassing to the campaign ” and Trump. The doorman was eventually released from the exclusivity agreement in December 2016 — after the election, at Cohen’s request.
  • Karen McDougal: Pecker said former National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard went to interview former Playboy model Karen McDougal about a story she was trying to sell alleging she had a relationship with Trump, which the former president denies. Pecker testified that Cohen called him frequently to ask about what happened at the interview and was agitated.

Analysis: Trump faces another major legal battle at the Supreme Court on Thursday

The Supreme Court’s hearing on  former President Donald Trump’s  immunity claim — happening on Thursday — will underline a historic power shift.

In a closely divided era when neither party has proven able to maintain control of the White House and Congress for very long, the six GOP-appointed justices on the high court have become the most durable source of influence determining the nation’s direction.

“There’s an argument to be made that the Supreme Court is the central character in our national story right now because they are setting the terms by which the other branches and the states and the American people operate in a much more assertive way than perhaps they ever have,” said historian Jeff Shesol.

Although Chief Justice John Roberts  at his confirmation hearing famously likened the court to an impartial “umpire, ” the conservative majority has steadily steered policy on a wide range of social, racial and economic issues toward the preferences of the Republican Party, whose presidents nominated them and whose senators provided the vast majority of votes to confirm them.

The rulings by the GOP-appointed justices over roughly the past two decades have produced cumulative policy changes “way more extensive than any administration, even within unified control of government, has been able to generate,” said Paul Pierson, a University of California at Berkeley political scientist.

The Supreme Court arguments will come as Trump sits in New York for his hush money trial proceedings.

Donald Trump has been accused of taking part in an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election and an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, which included a hush money payment made to an adult-film star to hide an affair. Trump has denied the affair.

What Sentencing Could Look Like if Trump Is Found Guilty

For all the attention to and debate over the unfolding trial of Donald Trump in Manhattan, there has been surprisingly little of it paid to a key element: its possible outcome and, specifically, the prospect that a former and potentially future president could be sentenced to prison time.

The case — brought by Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, against Mr. Trump — represents the first time in our nation’s history that a former president is a defendant in a criminal trial. As such, it has generated lots of debate about the case’s legal strength and integrity, as well as its potential impact on Mr. Trump’s efforts to win back the White House.

A review of thousands of cases in New York that charged the same felony suggests something striking: If Mr. Trump is found guilty, incarceration is an actual possibility. It’s not certain, of course, but it is plausible.

Jury selection has begun, and it’s not too soon to talk about what the possibility of a sentence, including a prison sentence, would look like for Mr. Trump, for the election and for the country — including what would happen if he is re-elected.

The case focuses on alleged interference in the 2016 election, which consisted of a hush-money payment Michael Cohen, the former president’s fixer at the time, made in 2016 to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. Mr. Bragg is arguing that the cover-up cheated voters of the chance to fully assess Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

This may be the first criminal trial of a former president in American history, but if convicted, Mr. Trump’s fate is likely to be determined by the same core factors that guide the sentencing of every criminal defendant in New York State Court.

Comparable cases. The first factor is the base line against which judges measure all sentences: how other defendants have been treated for similar offenses. My research encompassed almost 10,000 cases of felony falsifying business records that have been prosecuted across the state of New York since 2015. Over a similar period, the Manhattan D.A. has charged over 400 of these cases . In roughly the first year of Mr. Bragg’s tenure, his team alone filed 166 felony counts for falsifying business records against 34 people or companies.

Contrary to claims that there will be no sentence of incarceration for falsifying business records, when a felony conviction involves serious misconduct, defendants can be sentenced to some prison time. My analysis of the most recent data indicates that approximately one in 10 cases in which the most serious charge at arraignment is falsifying business records in the first degree and in which the court ultimately imposes a sentence, results in a term of imprisonment.

To be clear, these cases generally differ from Mr. Trump’s case in one important respect: They typically involve additional charges besides just falsifying records. That clearly complicates what we might expect if Mr. Trump is convicted.

Nevertheless, there are many previous cases involving falsifying business records along with other charges where the conduct was less serious than is alleged against Mr. Trump and prison time was imposed. For instance, Richard Luthmann was accused of attempting to deceive voters — in his case, impersonating New York political figures on social media in an attempt to influence campaigns. He pleaded guilty to three counts of falsifying business records in the first degree (as well as to other charges). He received a sentence of incarceration on the felony falsification counts (although the sentence was not solely attributable to the plea).

A defendant in another case was accused of stealing in excess of $50,000 from her employer and, like in this case, falsifying one or more invoices as part of the scheme. She was indicted on a single grand larceny charge and ultimately pleaded guilty to one felony count of business record falsification for a false invoice of just under $10,000. She received 364 days in prison.

To be sure, for a typical first-time offender charged only with run-of-the-mill business record falsification, a prison sentence would be unlikely. On the other hand, Mr. Trump is being prosecuted for 34 counts of conduct that might have changed the course of American history.

Seriousness of the crime. Mr. Bragg alleges that Mr. Trump concealed critical information from voters (paying hush money to suppress an extramarital relationship) that could have harmed his campaign, particularly if it came to light after the revelation of another scandal — the “Access Hollywood” tape . If proved, that could be seen not just as unfortunate personal judgment but also, as Justice Juan Merchan has described it, an attempt “to unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential election.”

History and character. To date, Mr. Trump has been unrepentant about the events alleged in this case. There is every reason to believe that will not change even if he is convicted, and lack of remorse is a negative at sentencing. Justice Merchan’s evaluation of Mr. Trump’s history and character may also be informed by the other judgments against him, including Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud, a jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll and a related defamation verdict by a second jury.

Justice Merchan may also weigh the fact that Mr. Trump has been repeatedly held in contempt , warned , fined and gagged by state and federal judges. That includes for statements he made that exposed witnesses, individuals in the judicial system and their families to danger. More recently, Mr. Trump made personal attacks on Justice Merchan’s daughter, resulting in an extension of the gag order in the case. He now stands accused of violating it again by commenting on witnesses.

What this all suggests is that a term of imprisonment for Mr. Trump, while far from certain for a former president, is not off the table. If he receives a sentence of incarceration, perhaps the likeliest term is six months, although he could face up to four years, particularly if Mr. Trump chooses to testify, as he said he intends to do , and the judge believes he lied on the stand . Probation is also available, as are more flexible approaches like a sentence of spending every weekend in jail for a year.

We will probably know what the judge will do within 30 to 60 days of the end of the trial, which could run into mid-June. If there is a conviction, that would mean a late summer or early fall sentencing.

Justice Merchan would have to wrestle in the middle of an election year with the potential impact of sentencing a former president and current candidate.

If Mr. Trump is sentenced to a period of incarceration, the reaction of the American public will probably be as polarized as our divided electorate itself. Yet as some polls suggest — with the caveat that we should always be cautious of polls early in the race posing hypothetical questions — many key swing state voters said they would not vote for a felon.

If Mr. Trump is convicted and then loses the presidential election, he will probably be granted bail, pending an appeal, which will take about a year. That means if any appeals are unsuccessful, he will most likely have to serve any sentence starting sometime next year. He will be sequestered with his Secret Service protection; if it is less than a year, probably in Rikers Island. His protective detail will probably be his main company, since Mr. Trump will surely be isolated from other inmates for his safety.

If Mr. Trump wins the presidential election, he can’t pardon himself because it is a state case. He will be likely to order the Justice Department to challenge his sentence, and department opinions have concluded that a sitting president could not be imprisoned, since that would prevent the president from fulfilling the constitutional duties of the office. The courts have never had to address the question, but they could well agree with the Justice Department.

So if Mr. Trump is convicted and sentenced to a period of incarceration, its ultimate significance is probably this: When the American people go to the polls in November, they will be voting on whether Mr. Trump should be held accountable for his original election interference.

Panama Papers trial’s public portion comes to an unexpectedly speedy end

PANAMA CITY (AP) — The public portion of a trial of more than two-dozen associates accused of helping some of the world’s richest people hide their wealth came to an unexpectedly speedy conclusion Friday when a Panamanian judge said she would take the two weeks of trial arguments and testimony under advisement.

The trial came eight years after 11 million leaked secret financial documents that became known as the “Panama Papers” prompted the resignation of the prime minister of Iceland and brought scrutiny to the then-leaders of Argentina and Ukraine, Chinese politicians, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others.

Judge Baloisa Marquínez noted Friday that the case included more than 530 volumes of information. The public trial had been expected to run to the end of the month. The judge has 30 working days to issue a verdict.

Those on trial include the owners of the Mossack Fonseca law firm that was at the heart of the 2016 massive document leak. Jürgen Mossack attended the trial, while his partner Ramón Fonseca did not for health reasons, according to his counsel.

Panamanian prosecutors allege that Mossack, Fonseca and their associates created a web of shell companies that used complex transactions to hide money linked to illicit activities in the “car wash” corruption scandal of Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht .

“This whole process from eight years ago until now … has had a lot of consequences for my family, on my personal situation and truly has been a great injustice not just for me but for all of the people who have worked with me,” Mossack testified Friday. “I trust your honor will know how to evaluate all that has been said here.”

Mossack had said at the start of the trial, as he has for years, that he was not guilty of the money laundering charges.

According to Panamanian prosecutors, the Mossack Fonseca firm created 44 shell companies, 31 of which opened accounts in Panama to hide money linked to the Brazilian scandal.

Fonseca has said the firm, which closed in 2018, had no control over how its clients might use offshore vehicles created for them.

Mossack Fonseca helped create and sell around 240,000 shell companies across four decades in business. It announced its closure in March 2018, two years after the scandal erupted.

The firm’s documents were first leaked to the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung, and were shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which began publishing collaborative reports with news organizations in 2016.

“The reputational deterioration, the media campaign, the financial siege and the irregular actions of some Panamanian authorities have caused irreparable damage, whose consequence is the complete cease of operations to the public,” the firm said in a statement at the time.

The Mossack and Fonseca were acquitted on other charges in 2022.
