George K explains that fashion separates individuals from the rest. A person can introduce himself to others for who and what he is through style choices. Further, the author expounds on how fashion is a very competitive industry that depends on one’s search for identity. The author also points out that every person is unique and thus needs a distinct style to fit them. However, because of constant peer pressure and criticism, an individual’s fashion picks can’t be entirely their own. Ultimately, George K reminds the reader that it’s not just the clothes but how individuals wear and feel in them.

“…if we can do something then it is choosing the right stuff like entertainment, adventure, fashion, etc. All these things can make us happy and are also an important part of life. Fashion always attracts and it is available for all,”

Yadav considers how fashion originated from people’s traditions and cultures and became what it is today through individuals adopting each style and making it their own. In her conclusion, she encourages everyone to choose their styles and not to mind their age. Fashion helps everyone live life to the fullest.

“Fashion is an industry based on creating a need where there is none and nowadays, due to the current recession, I can understand that fashion may not be people’s biggest concern. Summers ends her essay by highlighting that fashion is too essential in modern culture and economic organization for it to be considered “trivial.”

“…the youth cares more about what they wear and how they look which could affect their status in their peer group and meddle with their mental health. Following trends and doing what everyone is doing like a sheep is never a good idea. Fashion is there to reflect your personal style, not copying what other people think is trendy.”

User Edudwar reminds people that fashion is not simply following what’s currently trendy. Fashion is there to give people the chance to show off their individualism and personalities and not present a fake version of themselves to be accepted by society. Additionally, he mentions that youth nowadays are more sensitive to what people think of them, so some will always do everything to follow trends, even if they’re not presentable or appropriate.

The time spent on studies is being used in watching TV programmes, reading fashion articles, or even finding the recent trendy outfits on the Internet.”

The essay discusses the real effects of fashion on today’s youth. The author focuses on kids zeroing in on finding the latest style instead of caring for their studies that directly affect their future. The essay also delves into how youths of yesterday had ambitions and goals in life compared to today’s youths, who prefer to have fun rather than study hard.

Essay: Why Fashion is Important

The Fashionisto

Louis Vuitton 2016 Spring Summer Backstage

Fashion is one of the most critical industries in our world today. Style has become one of the primary ways in which people express their personality and distinguish themselves from those around them. With every New Year which comes and goes, new fashions arrive on the scene, and they all endeavor to be more colorful and fashionable than those which saw last year. There’s inspiration everywhere, from online retailers like Roden Gray to printed magazines. The desire to express one was present throughout human history.

People of all ages are addicted to new trends in fashion. There is a tremendous amount of competition within the industry and also among consumers. The style is also different among different cultures and nationalities, which is why it’s so exciting when one travels to various parts of the planet to observe firsthand how people dress in those countries. Our clothes have become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness. Instead, it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.

Garments which may fit one person may not necessarily be equally suitable for someone else. And even if those clothes are fantastic designer efforts, it does not mean everyone would be equally comfortable wearing them. Different people will need different styles and designs, which will be an expression of their uniqueness and personality before they will not be comfortable wearing that specific fashion design. Human beings are complicated creatures; everyone has different desires, dreams, and objectives that they deem essential to success in their life. Fashion trends are a critical aspect of that success.

There is a lot of discrimination among human beings and also a lot of criticism. People will do everything possible to avoid such criticism. Peer pressure continues to affect people throughout their lives, and it is a powerful motivator when it comes to crucial fashion decisions. It is also true that fashion design has reached a very sophisticated level, and therefore some of the most popular models can be very costly.

It has the result that such fashion may only be accessible to affluent people. It can make it very difficult for people of average income to compete in fashion designs. Fortunately, there has been a lot of progress by fashion designers to cater to middle-income consumers. It is why there are a lot of fashion designs available, which can make it possible for less fortunate people to own still fashion designs that will be of very high quality and attractive.

There are fashion items for every season and every occasion, making it possible for people to express themselves differently depending on the specific season or time of the year. Looking at all the consumer needs that have emerged in modern times, it becomes easy to see why fashion design has become such a specialized industry.

Another aspect that deserves contemplation is the fact that there is a measure of similarity in those fashion trends which aim at the low-income person. It is going a long way in avoiding discrimination or unnecessary competition because there is a lot of similarity in the designs which aim at this consumer market. Therefore, less affluent people can avoid unwarranted discrimination and criticism because, they are dressed very similarly in many ways to their friends, colleagues, or family members.

Care should be taken to avoid fashion designs of poor quality, especially in cases where failed fashion experiments are nevertheless mass-produced and then dumped on the low-income consumer. On the other hand, some poor people cannot afford anything better, leaving her with no choice but to purchase low-quality products.

Nevertheless, an eye for detail can be a blessing because this can help a person who may only have access to low-quality fashion items to mix and match those things very efficiently so that the overall result is nonetheless beautiful. There is some truth to the statement that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it, which is the most critical issue.

Unfortunately, many people never seem to learn how to combine different fashion items correctly and adequately. Knowing which colors go together is a rare gift that some people never master. Therefore, even affluent people with access to very costly fashion items often fail to do those things justice because of a lack of understanding regarding color matching.

Many people seem to think tight clothing is more attractive than a loose-fitting dress, and then they make fools of themselves by wearing unnecessarily close-fitting clothes. It is why it is essential to have at least a basic understanding of choosing your fashion items and mixing and matching those things for the best results. Access to the most expensive fashion trends on the market is undoubtedly a benefit. Still, it’s even more important to have a basic sense of how to maximize how the wearer will display those clothes and other articles.

Clothes are also known to impact people’s moods substantially; likewise, some colors are more effective than others in putting people in a better place as far as their mindset and emotions are concerned. Every person should do at least an introductory modeling course to understand how to make the best of their free clothes and accessories. Like we said earlier, it is not so much what you are wearing but rather how you are wearing it, which will ultimately provide proof of your competence as far as fashion and personal appearance is concerned.

Different people need different styles and designs for their uniqueness and personality before wearing that specific fashion design. This essay will talk more about fashion history, importance and trends.

History of Fashion

Fashion is all about the history of people. For thousands of years, people have loved fashionable clothing. Clothes, from the early days of Egypt, have become our expression. We can see fashion worn in various civilisations throughout history, documents, drawings, and other archaeological findings. Eastern neighbours influenced clothes of different styles worn by the Greeks. Both males and females used to wear thick woollen long dresses.

During ancient times, Egyptians used to wear light cotton clothing, and Egyptian women wore long, ready-made clothes. Later on, the Romans dominated the most significant example of fashion and style.

When people started migrating to Europe, accordingly, the style changed. To keep themselves warm, women used to wear warm clothes and men plain and armour clothes.

Since there were not enough raw materials to produce new clothes for people who migrated to America in that era, dresses were ordered and sent to the oceans by ships to cope with the demand. Suits with leggings were men’s attire, and women wore long clothes and hats on their heads. Over time, the form of the dresses transferred from voluminous dresses into soft, frequent, high-waisted skirts.

Women’s skirts were shorter and thinner at the beginning of the century. Trousers of men slowly went from ankle to knee-length. During the World Wars, women’s style transformed into shorter skirts below the knee.

The ‘80s brought significant trends related to fashion and hairstyles for both genders. The transitional fashion period is from the sixties and seventies. During this time, women wearing trousers became acceptable.

From the 20th century to the 21st century, fashion change continued, and still today, it is evolving.

Fashion Trend

When we talk about influencing fashion, political influencers play a vital role. There are a lot of instances where politicians become fashion symbols, like Princess Diana and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Political revolutions also left a significant impact on fashion trends.

Technology is another significant factor that influences fashion. The fashion industry saw rapid growth in technology such as 3D printing technology, wearable technology, etc. The Internet also affects fashion trends.

People are influenced by their favourite stars, influencers, etc. The strongest influencers in the field of fashion are social media influencers. Young stars try to emulate the fashion styles of their loved celebrities. For example, hoodies came into fashion due to rap musicians. Television and movie stars also influence fashion trends.

It’s entirely up to you to be fashionable; it shouldn’t be forceful, and it is your own decision what you want to follow. Our fashion sense also reflects our culture. It makes our life colourful and adds variety to life, providing an opportunity to try out something new. Though this time of the 21st century in India, most people are influenced by the style of fashion, they have not forgotten our traditions and culture, which are the priority and symbol of our country.

Introduction

Fashion is a non-verbal way of communication that conveys a lot about the person’s personality, background and style. Earlier it was exclusively the world of the affluent, celebrities and royalty. However, fashion is now within the reach of the common man, especially the youth. Besides, dress fashion is an evolution of ideas, which begins as a fad, but in course of time gets accepted in society as a style, which could be in attire, behaviour or lifestyle. Fashion is mostly associated with glamour. It makes people feel confident and bold. People can express themselves openly. Today fashion is not limited to western countries; now, every country has come out with their fashion sense, not only the clothing but the accent of that country, the living style.

Vedantu experts have crafted an essay on fashion that covers its significance and how it reflects in your personality. This essay has promoted the thought perfectly that fashion is also about carrying yourself in society without having an attractive or trendy attire.  It is about being comfortable with yourself and not being a doppelganger of another person.

Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it reflects the culture of a country. It makes our life colourful and changes our life with time. In a way it also adds variety to life, providing an opportunity in trying out something new. Fashion is not only limited to clothing or makeup but in a much broader sense includes accessories like shoes, perfume, hairstyle, mannerism, etiquette and attitude towards life. Fashion is not restricted to self-expression only but also a means of self-empowerment and confidence. It encompasses the total spectrum of human activity, which relates to a specific period. It is an outlook of life.

Fashion is how you carry yourself in society without wearing anything trendy. It is how you attempt to make yourself look flawless even without any make-up. It helps you in revealing your true identity.

Evolution of Fashion

The world of fashion is always evolving.  It is amazing to see how the different events in history have influenced and changed the way people dressed and looked throughout time. Thus long dresses, veiled headgear that was trends of the Victorian era, have been replaced with micro and mini dresses and the jeans culture associated with the modern era.

From the 1920s to the 1990s fashion just not changed in clothing but also in accessories, footwear and hairstyles. The trends of wearing hats, carrying purses, shoes and men wearing long ties and bows have been continuously changing with periods, occasions and culture.

Hairstyles also have been changing throughout time. Short boyish haircuts were popular during the 1920s to 1940s. Wigs were more popular in the 1960s and thereafter hairstyles kept changing from short to bob cut then to mid-back cut and now maintaining long hair.

Fashion Industry

As fashion evolved, the industry was formulated to manage the process for the consumers. The fashion world has given shape to a new industry, the ‘Fashion Industry’.

The fashion industry was created to design, manufacture and market clothes, footwear and accessories. Before creating the apparel industry, people made clothes for themselves. The mass production of clothing began in the mid-nineties when some creators began to make garments that did not require any fitting session with the tailors. The fashion industry in its true sense was established in the twentieth century when the neighbourhood tailors decided to become the manufacturing business.

Fashion impacting the Youth

The positive side of fashion is it enhances your life. It not only allows you to dress fashionably but also allows being independent in thinking and maintaining self-esteem. At the same time, fashion is negatively impacting the youth. It has taken up the life of the youth so much that the youngsters are highly obsessed with creating style statements at an age where they need to focus on their studies and other important aspects of life. The fashion trend has become a cult with today’s generation. They blindly try to imitate the models and celebrities without understanding the true essence of fashion.

While writing about fashion, you have to put some extra effort to explain evolution in both positive and negative ways.

The fashion world has given a new face to the clothing market. It has turned into a fashion industry.

Impact of fashion on teenagers

Teenagers are more cautious about their attire; they are aware of only one prevalent face of fashion.

What is the importance of fashion?

The need is therefore to strike a balance between being fashionable and wearing what suits you. The young generation needs to understand that fashion in the true sense is the attitude that you carry and just not fashionable clothes and accessories.

250 Words Essay on Modern Fashion

Introduction to modern fashion.

Modern fashion, a dynamic and ever-evolving field, reflects societal changes and individual identities. As a form of self-expression, it serves as a mirror to the cultural, economic, and political shifts occurring globally.

Fashion as a Form of Self-Expression

In the modern era, fashion has become an avenue for personal storytelling. It’s no longer merely about following trends set by high-end designers. Instead, individuals curate their style, blending vintage and contemporary pieces, high-end and affordable items, to create a unique aesthetic that reflects their personality and values.

The Influence of Social Media

The advent of social media has greatly democratized fashion. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow users to showcase their style, influencing trends on a global scale. As a result, the power to dictate fashion has shifted from designers and models to everyday individuals and influencers.

Sustainability in Modern Fashion

In response to growing concerns about environmental and ethical issues, sustainable fashion is gaining prominence. This movement encourages the use of eco-friendly materials, ethical production processes, and a shift towards slow fashion – buying fewer, higher quality items that last longer.

Modern fashion is a complex blend of personal expression, social media influence, and growing sustainability consciousness. As we move forward, the industry will continue to evolve, reflecting the changing times and the diverse identities of those who engage with it. With its dynamic nature, fashion remains an exciting and influential aspect of modern culture.

500 Words Essay on Modern Fashion

Fashion is an ever-evolving phenomenon, a reflection of societal changes and individual expression. Modern fashion is a complex blend of aesthetics, functionality, and cultural influences, marking a departure from traditional norms and embracing diversity on a global scale.

The Evolution of Modern Fashion

The evolution of modern fashion is marked by a shift from conformity to individuality. In the early 20th century, fashion was largely dictated by social class and occasion. Today, however, fashion is more about personal style and comfort. The advent of fast fashion, while controversial, has democratized style, making it accessible to people of all socio-economic backgrounds.

Global Influences and Cultural Fusion

Modern fashion is a melting pot of global influences. Designers are increasingly drawing inspiration from different cultures, leading to a fusion of styles. This cultural exchange is not just about aesthetics, but also about fostering understanding and respect for diverse cultures. However, it’s crucial to navigate this space with sensitivity to avoid cultural appropriation.

Technology and Fashion

Technology has revolutionized modern fashion in numerous ways. From digital sketches and 3D printing to smart fabrics and wearable tech, the marriage of fashion and technology is reshaping the industry. Online shopping and social media have also transformed the way we discover and purchase fashion, making it a more interactive and personalized experience.

With growing awareness about environmental issues, sustainability has become a significant aspect of modern fashion. The industry is grappling with its environmental footprint, leading to a rise in ethical fashion brands and sustainable practices. Concepts like slow fashion and circular fashion are gaining traction, promoting longevity, recycling, and responsible consumption.

Representation and Inclusivity

Modern fashion is also marked by a push for greater representation and inclusivity. Body positivity and diversity are now front and center, challenging traditional beauty standards. Fashion brands are recognizing the need for designs that cater to all body types, ages, and races, signaling a shift towards a more inclusive industry.

Conclusion: The Future of Modern Fashion

As we move forward, the future of modern fashion lies in its ability to adapt and innovate. With challenges like climate change and social inequality, the industry needs to evolve sustainably and inclusively. Modern fashion is not just about what we wear, but also about the values we embody. As consumers, we have the power to shape these values and drive change, making fashion a powerful tool for social and environmental progress.

Essay on Fashion: 100-Word, 150-Word, 200-Word, 500-Word Essay on Fashion

Essay on Fashion

Fashion is a way of expressing one’s style. It has changed many times since its dawn and modern fashion has come a long way. Fashion essays are a good way to enlighten students about its journey, here are some of them.

100-word Essay on Fashion

Fashion is a way of life. People these days dress according to their style, liking, preferences, and take fashion trends seriously and follow them religiously. Fashion depends on how people of a certain region or state dress and it can also vary significantly from country to country.

Although the main focus is on clothing items when one says the word fashion, accessories like jewelry, handbags, shoes, and glasses can also be an important part of it. People style these together to create elegant-looking outfits. Women’s fashion usually has a lot more variety than men’s fashion, and women tend to be a lot more inclined towards trends.

150-word Essay on Fashion

Since the dawn of human society, fashion has been an inseparable component. People use fashion to express themselves and their style. It has seen many highs and lows along the journey but was never boring. Fashion is incredibly interesting and never stagnant. It changes with time and new trends make their way into the mainstream scenario.

Fashion usually depends on age and gender. Although with today’s modernization, more unisex items are making their way into the fashion industry. Women are usually more drawn to fashionable clothes and accessories. However, men are also not behind in this race. Men’s fashion previously was considered to be bland and monotone, which has since changed behind due to the introduction of modern fashion. They now have a lot more to explore and experiment with in terms of clothes and jewelry. The changing and growing trends in fashion is what keeps it interesting and fun to explore.

200-word Essay on Fashion

Fashion is a form of self-expression. It could display your taste, likes, and dislikes quite well. The garments we wear help us identify with a certain social or cultural group. It has now become an inseparable part of our society and a point of great interest for many people.

Men and women have come a long way since caveman times. From wearing leaves and animal skin to wearing sophisticated outfits, the journey of fashion has been remarkable. Now being presentable is synonymous with following the latest trends in appropriate situations. Some events have certain dress codes that people follow to be a part of that particular group and there are also some socially acceptable fashion formulas that one should follow. For example, wearing formal attire for a presentation is encouraged while wearing pajamas to a wedding would be frowned upon.

People have to adhere to these rules to be respectable members of society. Although following fashion trends can become an obsession for some that could send them down a downward spiral. Especially the youth cares more about what they wear and how they look which could affect their status in their peer group and meddle with their mental health. Following trends and doing what everyone is doing like a sheep is never a good idea. Fashion is there to reflect your personal style, not copying what other people think is trendy.

500-word Essay on Fashion

Fashion has been around for as long as we could imagine and has now become an integral part of our day-to-day lives. And in today’s world where a person is judged on their outward appearance, fashion has become more important. It has been around since man became aware of different kinds of fabrics and styles.

Fashion has traveled a long journey, from ancient times till now. We have seen tremendous changes in the trends and styles during his period. Clothing, footwear, and accessories all come under the umbrella of fashion but clothing always seems to take the lead. Several factors play a vital role in what is considered fashionable these days. Celebrities and personalities with major influence have always majorly shifted the trends in fashion. Because a lot of people that follow them, also follow their pieces of fashion advice.

Fashion in India is vast, to say the least. The land of diversity has a multitude of different outfits and fashion statements. Our country is rich with culture and a heritage that has influenced fashion for centuries. Although most of the world tends to follow western trends, traditional outfits still have their roots strong. A fusion between western and traditional fashion has also been a trend in the past and doesn’t seem to die down anytime soon. Fashion is a form of art that expresses its beautiful self in different ways.

Fashion expresses the choices and style of a person. It also represents the cultural heritage and its significance. People love dressing according to the occasion. For example, a professional environment calls for formals, while casual wear is considered daily wear, and special occasions like birthdays call for party wear. Dressing according to occasion helps in fitting in one’s social group. It is now common sense to dress appropriately because one cannot show up to a wedding in a casual outfit. It does not put you in a good light and may be frowned upon. Nowadays having a dressing sense has become an integral part of our lives.

The evolution of fashion throughout the world has been remarkable. It’s amazing to see how people dressed during certain times and history, and even today. From fluffy gowns and corsets to skinny jeans and bodycon dresses, it has been a hell of a ride. Women’s fashion is quite vast as compared to men’s fashion. Mostly, women have been the target audience of clothing and cosmetic brands. They always have a wide range of clothes and accessories to select from. Fashion has also become pretty popular among school and college students. They are very keen on following new fashion trends and owning the best outfit and accessory collection.

Wanting to look good isn’t a bad thing but you should not become completely obsessed with it. At the end of the day, people should wear what they feel comfortable in. Wearing fashionable clothes just for the sake of it will not do good for anyone. Fashion should never be the outcome of peer pressure, but a representation of one’s unique style.

Deadly Fashion

My $9.99 t-shirt is no longer wearable after two washes: the shape of the shirt is so distorted that it does not fit me well anymore. One might say I got what I paid for, because the poorly constructed t-shirt is from a “fast fashion” store. Fast fashion is a term for the companies like H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo that sell clothes that copy the trendy appeal of high-end brands but at an affordable price, usually because they are made in countries with low labor costs like India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China. Fast fashion prices are so low, explains anthropologist and marketing professor Annamma Joy, that consumers feel encouraged to dispose of a garment after a few wearings and buy a new piece (274). This leads to an increase in sales for new clothing. In fact, According to journalist Rachel Monroe, “Worldwide, clothing production doubled from 2000 to 2015, while prices dropped: We were spending the same amount on clothes, but getting nearly twice as many items for it.” This increase in value for customers has a steep price, even if we can't see it in the store. Before tossing my t-shirt in a donation bag, I wonder about the person who sewed it. Who is this person? How good or bad are their working conditions? What about the cost of pollution? Although some defend the fast fashion industry’s aesthetic and economic contributions, it has devastating impacts on labor rights and the environment, and needs serious regulations by all nations to stop the damage.

One glaring consequence of the demand for cheap clothing is that factory workers get paid too little, while their requests for living wages are ignored. Cheap labor is a reason that many apparel corporations move their production overseas. As Adam Matthews reports, by 2016, only 3% of clothes sold in the U.S. were made in this country. This shift to foreign production is the direct result of lower labor costs. According to Deborah Drew, an associate at the World Resource Institute’s Center for Sustainable Business, women garment workers in Bangladesh are paid about $96 per month; however, the government estimates $336 dollars as a minimum level for workers to afford their basic needs. Based on these statistics, women are paid less than a third of a necessary living wage. Garment workers in other developing countries suffer similarly: they work long hours but remain in poverty. Business owners and their powerful organizations dismiss the demands of factory laborers for raises because they claim that paying more will lead to factory closures. In fact, in recent negotiations, some are trying to impose even worse pay. Ken Loo, secretary-general of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia, defended the employers’ proposal to reduce wages by 4.5 percent. He “pointed to the economic effects of COVID-19 and said garment industry employers can’t afford to spend more on labor” (Sovuthy). His statement reflects the belief that the workers’ lives and well-being are not important compared to the continuing profits of the owners and investors. Most reasonable people would not agree with that idea, but most of us still shop for cheap clothing. We can’t depend on the individual fairness of factory owners, or on individual consumers to solve this problem; that’s why regulations are critical.

Besides low wages, workers in the clothing factories also suffer terrible working conditions. Singular tragic events such as the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013 that killed over a thousand workers make worldwide news (Rahman and Rahman 1331), but the daily experiences of the people making cheap clothing are also unacceptable. According to Sadika Akhter, an anthropologist and doctor of Environmental Public Health and her colleagues, garment workers in Bangladesh typically work ten to twelve hours per day, inhaling fabric dust, enduring extreme heat, and getting repetitive motion injuries from using the machines. They are constantly in pain and exhausted. In their qualitative study of women garment workers’ experiences, Akhter et al. quote a machine operator who says, “We sew shirts with our tears and injure our fingers due to needle punctures. If you work at the garment factory it will give you some money but it will take your health. . . . No one can work in a factory more than ten years because you will lose your physical strength, energy and health . . . due to the nature of hard work in this industry." This statement emphasizes how exploited these workers are; their bodies are being damaged every day. The people, not just the clothing, are treated as if they are disposable.

It is true that the industry has made some progress in improving labor rights. Sociology professor Shahidur Rahman of BRAC University, and professor of Development Studies Kazi Mahmudur of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh describe some attempts at reform following the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 in their article in Development and Change . According to Rahman and Rahman, two major agreements, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and the Alliance for Bangladesh Workers' Safety brought together business owners and governments to improve the safety of factory buildings (1332). The Bangladeshi government also made changes to labor laws to allow workers to organize, and other international unions and non-governmental organizations have campaigned for worker rights in the industry (Rahman and Rahman 1333). These developments are positive—at least workers are less likely to die in a fire or building collapse. However, the inhumane daily conditions and low pay remain, even eight years after these agreements were made.

Beyond the conditions inside the factories, the production of cheap clothing causes significant pollution. The problems begin with the raw materials: synthetic fibers are made from petroleum, and although plant fibers are considered more natural, growing plants to use for fabric has its own problems. Research scientist Luz Claudio writes that cotton is "one of the most water and pesticide dependent crops (A450). Despite the fact that more consumers are choosing organic produce over conventional because of the concern about pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables, this trend is not extending to crops grown for fabrics. In fact, pesticide use on cotton fields is actually growing, along with its negative impact on farm workers, according to an international team of scientists from Pakistan and Greece (Khan and Damala 9). This problem is not limited to the countries where clothing is sewn; the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the usage of pesticides to produce cotton is a quarter of the entire pesticide used in this country (qtd. in Claudio, A450). Furthermore, when fabric is processed and dyed in factories overseas it can lead to significant water pollution. According to investigative reporter Adam Matthews, water that runs off from the factories contaminates rivers that are the lifeline for farmers, killing crops and sickening local residents and animals. Yixiu Wu of Greenpeace points out that "the average pair of jeans requires 1,850 gallons of water to process; a t-shirt requires 715 gallons. And after going through the manufacturing process, all that water often ends up horribly polluted" (qtd. in Matthews). In addition to water pollution, the fashion industry produces at least a tenth of the world's carbon emissions, says journalist Dana Thomas (qtd. in Shatzman). Still, most retail corporations do little to address these harms, because their profits are higher when they spend less money ensuring that crops are grown without poisons and that the waste products are properly disposed of.

Despite the clear injustices and environmental harms of garment production, some argue that the fashion industry provides work to people with few better choices in developing countries. According to reporter Stephanie Vatz, companies began outsourcing clothing manufacturing jobs in the 1970s, and by 2013, only two percent of clothing was made in the U.S. The same lack of labor protections that allow terrible working conditions in developing countries also guarantees low labor costs that motivate U.S. companies to relocate their factory sources (Vatz). Some claim that this is actually a benefit to those workers. For example, Benjamin Powell, the director of the Free Market Institute, justifies sweatshop labor, insists that this model is "part of the process that raises living standards and leads to better working conditions and development over time (qtd. in Ozdamar-Ertekin 3). This argument is compelling from a distance, but even if it may be true to some degree when we look at the history of economic development, it disregards the humanity of current garment workers. These people continue to work long hours in brutal conditions, generating huge profits for the factory and retail owners. Making the excuse that their lives could be even worse without this exploitation is just a cynical justification for greed.

Fast fashion brands focus almost entirely on financial gain and ignore social responsibility and workers' human rights. They turn a blind eye to polluting rivers, the impact on farmland, and poor labor conditions. As a consumer of fast fashion brands, this is troubling. As a person considering fashion as a part of history, a form of art and self-expression, this is beyond sad. A bad sewing job is an inconvenience for me, but unethical practices are the real issue. If there is something we can change, that is our behavior as consumers: we need to buy second-hand clothes, look for companies making apparel here in the U.S., and be willing to pay more for higher-quality clothing that lasts. However, ultimately this is not just a question of our own purchasing decisions. Major changes are needed in the system, and for that we need stronger government regulations to ensure real change.

Now, dressing-up is well synonymous with dressing according to the latest fashion, keeping in mind the location and occasion.

The youth follow this mantra religiously, it is a good factor to follow fashion and stay in style and there is a desire to take the youth on this path.

For the youth, following fashion has become a way of life.

They keep an eye on the latest fashion trends through the internet and incorporate them into their lives.

Modern Fashion Essay 500 words:

The fashion trend changes with each passing season.

Those who dress according to the latest fashion trends are considered to mark, while those who stick to the old are called outdated.

Today, our fashion and style reflect our personality to a large extent.

Fashion trends among young girls:

Young girls come out on top most list when it comes to fashion trends. They have a plethora of choice when it comes to fashionable clothes, accessories, bags, shoes and hairstyles.

Whereas in earlier times, young girls used to think about the latest trends from fashion magazines, latest television shows and movies, in today’s times it has become very easy to find out what is in vogue.

While the Internet has made it easier, the advent of social media has made it easier.

Young girls follow fashion forums and blogs to trend in the fashion world.

They also follow their favorite celebrities on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to see their latest photos.

They are inspired by beautiful clothes, hairstyles and accessories of celebrities and try to contain them.

Denim jeans have been in vogue for young girls for decades and are still in fashion, however, many new western clothes are in fashion these days.

The girls are seen wearing skirts, spaghetti tops, shorts, short dresses, ripped t-shirts, crop tops, off shoulder and a lot of other items.

Different T-shirts and dresses with different cuts and designs come into fashion from time to time and the market is filled with the same.

Fashion trend among youth:

Young men are particularly fond of watches and shoes. They keep a track of the latest watches launched by various brands and tailor them to their style.

They detest being called old and outdated and thus consistently follow the latest fashion trends.

When it comes to middle-aged men and women, there are many options and these trends change.

While clothes and accessories are more vibrant for the young, fashion wear is more subtle for middle-aged people and gives them a beautiful look.

The trend of fashion is constantly changing.

Though we like wearing clothes as per the latest fashion, but before blindly following any trend we should make sure that the particular style suits us.

Essay on Fashion 600 words:

Fashion has become an integral part of our society in modern times.

We belong to a society where people value the form of a person more than anything else.

A person’s social status and personality is judged by his or her outward appearance.

People follow the latest fashion trends to look good and impress others.

Fashion: To keep pace with the Society.

These day’s’ people have become very fair and more than the manner and character of a person, they value his physical appearance.

A person who dresses according to the latest fashion and style, everyone likes it.

Everyone likes to befriend such a person. He becomes an inspiration to others.

People mistake this external beauty for intelligence and seek opinions from such people and like socializing with them.

It is as if following fashion has become necessary to maintain the momentum of society.

A person who is well dressed according to the latest fashion is seen by others.

Different locations and different fashion trends:

India is a country of different cultures. The culture of a place plays an important role in establishing the fashion trend of that place.

While Kanchivaram sarees are in fashion in Tamil Nadu, Chhoti Kurti and Patiala salwar is prevalent in Punjab.

Similarly tunics, churidars and muflar are in fashion in Kashmir, while lungi is in style in Kerala.

The cuts and patterns of these attire change over time and people follow these latest trends.

Fashion: Inspired by Celebrities:

While fashion trends differ in different regions of India, people living in the metropolitan cities of the country follow a common trend that is mostly inspired by Bollywood celebrities.

New fashion trends accompany new movies and television shows, the new look is given to the actors to make each character stand out.

New types of attire, hairstyles and accessories are introduced and they become a rage among people.

People in our country see Bollywood celebrities as style icons, they keep an eye on every new trend that follows them and try to involve them.

At times, T-shirts, dresses, suits, shoes, belts and jewelery worn by celebrities have become extremely popular among the public.

Replicas of their designer wear are made available in the market and they are sold like hot buns.

These trends persist for a few weeks or months and are replaced by new ones. People do not hesitate to change their wardrobe with changing fashion.

Fashion Essay: Inspired by the West:

Today, most of India’s fashion trends are inspired by the West, oldern days when people wore only saris, salwar kameezes and kurta pajamas.

The youth of the country is inspired by Western culture and this is reflected not only in their thinking, but also in their fashion trends.

The girls are seen wearing a wide variety of western outfits along with jeans, T-shirts, skirts, frocks and other clothing items.

Boys also prefer to wear trousers, shorts, denim jeans and T-shirts instead of Indian attire. Western clothes appear more free and comfortable and have become a fashion in this way.

Indian Fashion Designer: Inspiring the West:

We have not only taken inspiration from the West, but have also inspired them for fashion.

Casual cotton kurtas and designer Indian sarees have become quite popular in Western countries. Bindi has also become a fashion trend among women in the West.

Climate Change Is Still Overlooked in Fashion Schools. It’s Time to Change That

By Michelle Gabriel

fashion design college classroom workshop with sewing machine

The fashion industry is a mess. From waste to wage theft, the impacts of the production of clothing are increasingly hard to ignore and have become issues that extend well beyond what we wear. As a former designer and someone who now teaches sustainability to fashion professionals in a graduate program, I find it frustrating to watch the industry fail to manage its broad range of negative impacts.

Like many, I was drawn to fashion because of its reputation for big-city glamour and the association with celebrity movers and shakers. I loved telling people from my suburban Ohio hometown that I lived in New York City and worked as a fashion designer. I would typically skip the messier details, such as the crappy apartment full of roommates, the low pay, the monied mean-girl culture, and above all, the totally unglamorous process of designing mass-produced clothing.

Fashion is, first and foremost, a business, and its primary goal is to make money. The global fashion industry is in every country in the world and is worth roughly $2 trillion , which is equivalent to the world’s 11th-largest economy by GDP.

Nearly everything about the production of fashion is harmful: Most fashion items are made of plastic and shed microplastics in our water systems and, ultimately, our bodies ; toxic chemicals are a feature of the development of raw materials and the processing, dyeing, and finishing of textiles and clothing items; exploitative and child labor are remarkably common throughout the supply chain; and the fashion industry is responsible for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions . Fashion also intersects with other big-impact global sectors, including agriculture, transport, and oil and gas, leading to even bigger impacts. The list goes on.

These are the issues that drew me to work in fashion sustainability. After 15 years as a designer, I knew my own impact; I could count the hundreds of thousands of garments I had been responsible for making over the years. And fashion companies, since recognizing the negative impact of typical clothing production, have started to create sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and/or environmental, social, and governance (ESG) teams to address issues related to caustic chemical usage and dumping, dependency on fossil fuel-based materials, and the forced labor that is common in the typical fashion business model.

But sustainability isn’t only a framework for environmental and social change; it also represents big business. Addressing sustainability is one of the biggest business opportunities for the global fashion industry today. For young people looking for a career in fashion, sustainability is huge, but realizing its potential is not going to happen without intentional effort.

A recent UN climate change report offered a dire warning: The fashion industry must engage all possible solutions if we are to avoid global climate collapse. But fashion has failed to meaningfully do that. Says Amir Sokolowski, global director for climate change at CDP, the nonprofit organization that partnered with the UN to provide the reporting, "These plans are lacking in the fashion industry,” adding that CDP data ranks the fashion sector as having “one of the lowest levels of disclosure of a credible climate transition plan.”

There are many reasons for the current state of the global fashion industry — including the absence of meaningful regulation — but fashion-focused higher education is a commonly overlooked contributor to these industry issues. When I began working in fashion sustainability, for instance, it was clear I was in over my head. The skills and knowledge I had collected throughout my career as a designer and in my fashion design undergraduate program were important, but ultimately not the same skills needed to drive change along social and environmental metrics. Ultimately, I went back to school to get the missing sustainability and impact skills I didn’t get as an undergrad in fashion design years ago.

Grad school is great for some people, but it shouldn’t be used to backfill what is missing from the most common types of education programs for fashion industry participants. Many who work in the industry receive a similar education: a two-year associate's or four-year bachelor's degree in fashion design or merchandising. Across programs, especially in the United States, curricula are mostly the same, with the bulk of required credit hours focused on skills like pattern-making, draping, and developing a unique, creative vision . It is unreasonable and unethical for undergraduate fashion education programs to skip sustainability. The fashion industry is facing immense existential global challenges , and the current model of education is not preparing future fashion leaders to manage it.

Fashion education is also focused on the creative genius of the designer, which results in too many individuals who are trained in producing goods as a designer and contributes to the growth of the industry and overproduction. This focus leads to the neglect of other skills, particularly those centered on climate impacts, human rights, and sustainability. Between 2007-2017, fashion design undergraduate matriculation tripled at certain US institutions , but many did not get an adequate education in the skills necessary to make sure fashion can course correct on its climate impact.

The UN report highlighted several essential focus areas for reducing the climate impacts of the fashion industry, and there is little overlap with current fashion curricula. Fashion education does not prepare students to understand or address the most pressing needs and biggest opportunities in the fashion industry.

This year, a preliminary study conducted by my student Lindsay Cousins analyzed six of the most well-known and well-attended fashion design undergraduate programs in the US. The study found that sustainability and social justice represented an average of only 3.8% of core fashion undergraduate-program curricula.

Roles that center on practicing sustainability and reducing negative social impacts could represent more opportunities and income for fashion students. Right now, the average tuition (including private schools and in- and out-of-state rates for public schools) for a four-year fashion degree across the top 10 US fashion schools is $142,514 , while the average salary for an entry-level design job is $53, 411 , according to data reported by Glassdoor. Opportunities for fashion design jobs are expected to grow at only 3% over the next decade ; meanwhile, fashion programs keep churning out thousands of candidates yearly for too few jobs . But roles across sectors that list even one sustainability-related skill grew at a rate of 15.2% between February 2022 and February 2023, according to a LinkedIn report , and sustainability-related work can earn more than double the median income when compared to all occupations .

As with most problems, things won’t change without collective action. So how do we hold both our love for fashion and the need to drive change in the industry? How do we take the future of the planet and the industry into our hands and learn valuable skills important for the task? I have some ideas.

If you want to attend fashion school, ask about sustainability and social justice curricula when speaking to university recruiters and program leads. Consider another discipline that is rooted in sustainability, social justice, or a climate-focused curriculum, and take some fashion classes to blend your skills and interests. You can also opt for programs that allow you to develop intersectional programming between different disciplines. Ask about collaborating with the earth sciences, sustainability management, political science, government affairs, engineering, or data science.

If you’re in fashion school now, you can work with your advisor to fill any elective with sustainability-focused courses oriented to the skills noted in the UN report. You can find a faculty champion or mentor and talk with them about your interests and concerns, or form or join a group focused on exploring fashion sustainability, like the Sustainable Fashion Initiative at the University of Cincinnati or Unravel at UCLA .

You can and should force the topic in all of your learning opportunities. You may not get to decide on the curriculum, but you are still in control of what you choose to focus on within your class projects. Get political. Build a coalition of likeminded students. Petition the school. Speak to your department chair. Talk to the dean of the school. Get involved in student government. Get involved in institutional decision-making.

A sustainable fashion industry is not possible until fashion education first embodies sustainability. Higher-education institutions are not passive participants in shaping the global fashion industry; as with the industry itself, higher education in fashion must be accountable for its role in climate change, human rights abuses, and the destructive state of the fashion industry.

You are crucial to creating that accountability. We must come together to drive meaningful change in the fashion industry and demand change in fashion higher education. Your love of fashion is a powerful tool for creating new, shared futures — and your voice is crucial to creating a fashion education system that makes sustainable change possible.

The real winner of the Met Gala was John Galliano

Loewe may have sponsored the Met, but Galliano won.

essay about style and fashion

This year’s Met Gala was sponsored in part by Loewe , the Spanish brand designed by Jonathan Anderson. Loewe’s designs are featured in the exhibition, and at the entrance to the gallery is a pop-up filled with branded candles, hats and T-shirts. Loewe dressed 17 high-profile guests — including Ayo Edebiri, Greta Lee, Josh O’Connor and Ariana Grande — and is hosting an after-party.

But it was not Anderson’s Met Gala. The night belonged to John Galliano.

Galliano, the designer of Maison Margiela who was fired from his job as creative director of Dior following antisemitic rants, has been quietly creeping back into public consciousness. A longtime friend of Wintour, he designed a ravenously received couture collection in January that’s already considered one of the standout fashion experiences of this decade, and a documentary, “High & Low: John Galliano,” seemed to grease the wheels for a more public return for the designer , even a new job. Or at least the opportunity for him to be less private, less apologetic or less guilty.

On Monday, he dressed six guests, far fewer than Loewe, but they were names with big impact: Zendaya, who hadn’t been at the Met Gala in five years; Kim Kardashian, with a corset that shrunk her waist to a frightful circumference; Bad Bunny, probably the most influential male musician in the world of style; Gwendoline Christie, who held court on Vogue’s live stream for nearly three hours; Natasha Poonawalla, a London School of Economics grad with many close friends in the fashion industry; and actor Adrien Brody.

Galliano was not there, but he hovered over the evening. (Notably, Anna Wintour wore Loewe.) There had been rumors that the “Sleeping Beauties” exhibition was supposed to be a retrospective for Galliano ; there have also been suggestions that he will move from Margiela, a low-key house owned by Renzo Rosso’s OTB, which also owns Diesel, Marni and a handful of other sassy art-house brands, back to LVMH, where he began his career at Givenchy before heading to Dior .

But even without the exhibition dedicated to his work, Galliano seized the stage. As if all those celebrities weren’t enough, after the red carpet had effectively wrapped up, Zendaya came out and walked again in a Galliano design, made when he was at Givenchy, in the mid-’90s. Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist, helped make vintage designs on the red carpet cool, so in a way, this was not unexpected. But whether he and Zendaya intended to participate in the campaign to bring Galliano back into the spotlight, the takeaway was that he is a designer worth celebrating — so much so that one of his dresses is not enough.

The real newsmaker dress of the night, though, was certainly Kardashian’s. On the carpet, she looked as though she was in pain, struggling to move or perhaps even breathe as she grasped at her cozy gray cardigan.

The look was a custom one but similar to those seen in designer Galliano’s couture show in January. That show, inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of Parisian creatures of the night , was so successful because it brought together so many of Galliano’s personal demons — his status as an industry outcast, the way he now “lurks” around the industry — and our own contemporary obsessions with body modifications, such as Botox and plastic surgery, and grafted them onto historical garments freighted with ghostly seriousness. We think we have escaped controlling absurdities like the corset, but our need to “fix” and “tweak” and even rebuild ourselves with lasers, needles and knives is just as disturbing.

Kardashian’s look and figure have morphed tremendously before the world’s gaze, and she has single-handedly rewritten the global beauty standard into something less like a suggestion and more like a preset menu with no substitutions. Not since Marilyn Monroe, whom she has channeled before, have the media and young women had such specific ideas about what is attractive — long black hair, plush lips, tiny waist and a large butt — but they’re all the more shocking because we believe anyone can pay for them. We have so much more control over our appearance than we’ve ever had before, yet so limiting an idea of what to do with that control.

Otherwise, many guests looked classic but not boring. Loewe and Balenciaga had the best looks of the evening, because their creative directors, Anderson and Demna, respectively, know how to make dresses that look new without looking stupid. Edebiri and Lee both looked especially great in Loewe: Edebiri in a floral dress that erupted into a riot of color and that was a technical sight to behold, and Lee in a dress that floated around her like a ghost in search of a worthy wearer. (Good news for the ghost that it found Lee!) Nicole Kidman was Balenciaga’s standout, in a vintage-inspired dress by Cristóbal Balenciaga. Balenciaga’s dresses looked almost sci-fi in their time, and Demna knows how to update old clothes to make them look utterly strange but completely timeless.

Also notable were Amanda Seyfried in her crinkly silver Prada and headpiece, looking like a woman who pops out of a cake in a 1950s musical to sing you a creepy lullaby. Jeremy Strong wore a stark-white suit with flowers crawling up the lapel and one pompously at the throat. RosalĂa wore a black column dress with a rounded train, with a veiled fascinator hovering over her face that kept her from looking too vintage-y. Michelle Williams, who often dresses with subdued crispness, dyed her hair pink and wore an appealing mountain of Chanel tulle. (Perhaps this is the tulle rule of thumb: Wear a mountain of it, not a cake.)

Several guests struck a perfect note between nutty and elegant (which is just the spot where chic exists), such as Elle Fanning, in a Balmain dress that looked like translucent gooey glass or plastic, with birds on her shoulders helping her get dressed, which made the near-nudity look cheeky; and Cole Escola in a little Thom Browne skirt suit and a pillbox hat with a veil. Escola looked ridiculous and he knew it — he had the most mischievous little smile — but it worked because everything fit so precisely.

This year, whether it was the machinations of Wintour or the less fantastical theme, “The Garden of Time,” inspired by a J.G. Ballard short story that few of the attendees seemed aware of, things reeled back to tastefulness after years of tackiness. Fashion should be fun, of course, but the gamesmanship of the Met Gala got out of hand, such that to “win” meant you wore something outrageous, ridiculous, even hilarious. But you weren’t sure whether you could laugh at it because everyone seemed
a little on edge. We do indeed live in tacky times. But the Met Gala is supposed to be an annual memo on the definitions of glamour and fantasy — not a reflection of the world in which the rest of us live.

All that tactfulness threw into relief how dated the idea of the “big spectacle dress” has become. Lana Del Rey in an Alexander McQueen dress with branches on her head and a veil on top looked like she was attending a gala several years ago, when those costume dresses (Blake Lively as the Statue of Liberty, or Katy Perry as a chandelier) were all the rage.

Even Cardi B in her enormous black dress was a shrug. We’ve seen that before, when Rihanna wore her enormous saffron Guo Pei cape in 2015. Amelia Grey wore a dress from a fantastic collection by Undercover, but what was electrifying on the runway just looked chintzy here, like a woman carrying around her science experiment. These dresses are like events unto themselves. Maybe it’s because it feels there is little to celebrate now, but they look off, the way a dress with huge shoulders reads as too ’80s.

Zendaya Is No Stranger to the Met Gala Red Carpet. But It’s Been a While.

The actress will return to the event for the first time in five years, this time as a host. Take a look at all her previous Met Gala looks.

  • Share full article

Zendaya departing the front entrance of the Mark hotel, with throngs of fans assembled behind barriers, smartphones raised for a picture.

By Callie Holtermann

“The designers must fight to the death to dress you,” Kelly Ripa told Zendaya, the 27-year-old actress, as they discussed her preparation for this year’s Met Gala on a recent episode of “Live With Kelly and Mark.”

Zendaya gave a knowing smile. Since she last attended the fashion extravaganza in 2019, she has become not only a leading actress onscreen (lately, in the tennis romance “Challengers”) but a red-carpet force whose looks can be anticipated almost as hotly as the projects they are meant to promote. Her committed style of dressing has become “a tool of both image-making and moneymaking,” wrote Jessica Testa, a fashion reporter for The New York Times.

So it is of intense interest to red-carpet watchers that Zendaya will return to the Met Gala on Monday for the first time in five years, this time as a co-chair . She will be styled by Law Roach, the “image architect” who has been working with her since she was 13. “We call each other our fashion soul mates,” he told Vanessa Friedman in a recent interview .

Zendaya’s willingness to take fashion risks has been on display at her past five Met Gala appearances, which have involved chain mail, parrots and a color-changing Cinderella dress with a pumpkin carriage purse. But ascending the steps has not exactly gotten easier with practice, she told Ms. Ripa: “It’s still terrifying.”

Below, a look through Zendaya’s Met Gala history.

‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’

For the camp-themed gala in 2019 , Zendaya assumed full Cinderella cosplay in a billowing ball gown with puff sleeves by Tommy Hilfiger. It transformed from gray to a luminous blue with the wave of a wand by Mr. Roach, who dressed as her fairy godmother.

‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’

Zendaya wore Versace’s take on armor to the 2018 Met Gala, complete with glittering silver epaulets, a spiked metal collar and a deep, single-leg split. The heavy gown was leavened by a wavy red bob with bangs.

Mr. Roach has said that the inspiration for the look arrived while he was sleeping. “I dreamt of Joan of Arc one night and called Versace and was like, ‘What if we did something to reference Joan of Arc?’” he told WWD . “They came back with really, really great sketches.”

‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between’

At the 2017 gala, Zendaya wore an off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana ball gown with illustrations of parrots and flowers descending its tangerine-and-maize skirt. Our critic described it as a “Tropicana fantasy.”

‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’

Zendaya arrived at the 2016 Met Gala in a sleek, form-fitting column of gold fabric by Michael Kors with a taut collar and a single sleeve. Her eye makeup evoked gunmetal, and her hair was in a high-gloss bowl cut.

‘China: Through the Looking Glass’

Zendaya attended her first Met Gala when she was 18, just a few years after her debut on the Disney Channel dance show “Shake It Up.” She wore a Fausto Puglisi dress with a black bodice and a short red skirt, adding a headband and wrist cuff with a sunburst pattern to match.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Met Gala

Zendaya Makes Two Arrivals: The actress wore a second John Galliano design to make a late (re)entrance at the Met Gala . The first was a custom Maison Margiela couture dress he created specifically for her.

A Fitting Literary Inspiration: In 1962, J.G. Ballard published “The Garden of Time,” a short story about aristocrats overrun by “an immense rabble.” It was a fitting but ironic choice as this year’s  dress-code theme .

The Body Spectacle: The night saw Kim Kardashian engaged in a kind of body modification  via extreme corseting. While Tyla, the South African singer and songwriter, appeared coated in sand .

Arrests and Protests: As expected, protesters gathered near the Met Gala to protest the war in Gaza, creating an atmosphere far different  from the one inside the event.

The ‘Naked’ Trend: What better way to distinguish oneself  from hundreds of well-dressed competitors than to wear almost nothing at all?

A Night of Firsts: Here’s the story behind Rebecca Ferguson’s sequin, bird-covered dress , Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s all-denim look , Pamela Anderson’s new incarnation , Christian Cowan and Sam Smith’s debut as a couple , and Amanda Seyfried’s semi-recycled look .
