If "Non-Stop" proves anything, besides confirming that 61-year-old Liam Neeson is not going to be knocked off his perch as the elder statesman of B-movie tough guys any time soon, it’s that snakes on a plane have nothing on texts on a plane when it comes to in-flight annoyances.

If I wanted to read my way through a film that features words dancing around the screen as if they were waltzing Post-Its, I would have sat through a foreign movie with subtitles instead.

But what would modern-day thrillers be these days without cell phones as a shorthand way to advance the plot and reduce the need for any actual clever repartee between characters? Especially when the clock is ticking down the minutes until something either goes boo or boom.

Certainly, this mile-high action flick would barely get off the ground without such technological aids, considering its premise is as reliant on Miss Marple mysteries—specifically, the gathering of potential perpetrators who conform to certain types—as it is on digital devices.

The rather ingenious if preposterous premise, one that only goes way off course in the heavy-handed third act: Neeson’s burned-out alcoholic air marshal struggles to find the fellow passenger aboard his New York-to-London flight who has sent him anonymous messages threatening that someone on the plane will be killed every 20 minutes until $150 million is deposited in a special account.

As most frequent flyers, know there are rules about phone use once you leave the gate. But ignoring such regulations is just one of the reasons "Non-Stop" is so ridiculously entertaining in spite of its occasional lapses in real-world logic. Nicotine addicts might vicariously appreciate how Neeson’s Bill Marks disables the smoke detector in the lavatory—duct tape is the key—so he can puff away while aloft with impunity. Others may be awed by how our grizzled hero takes advantage of the narrow confines of that same bathroom to efficiently pulverize an attacker to death.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra and veteran producer Joel Silver (" The Matrix " franchise, " Die Hard " and " Die Hard 2 "), who both previously teamed with Neeson on 2011’s " Unknown ", happily settle for economy-class storytelling. They know that their not-so-gentle giant of a star will emote just enough to keep the audience satisfied as he forcefully strides through the aisles and shouts orders in his resonant Irish burr. They also know how to humanize him, as Neeson kindly reassures the mandatory unaccompanied minor, a blonde moppet with stuffed animal in tow.

They do, however, indulge in upgrades when it comes to the supporting cast—most suspicious characters in their own special way. Many are over-qualified for the assignment, similar to the way stage legend Helen Hayes played a little old lady stowaway in 1970's " Airport ". Rest assured none will be winning an Oscar like Hayes did for her ride in the sky, but attaching themselves to the coattails of a late-career box-office titan like Neeson is a reward in itself.

Look, there's "Downton Abbey"'s Lady Mary— Michelle Dockery —as the main flight attendant (I kept wishing she would pull a Karen Black and commandeer the cockpit, but there is always the possible sequel). That bald NYPD cop who keeps grousing? Corey Stoll from Netflix's "House of Cards". And isn't that Scoot McNairy of " Argo " as the skinny nervous guy with glasses?

And what about four-time Oscar nominee Julianne Moore as an over-stressed businesswoman who is lucky enough to be seated next to a grimacing Neeson? And, speaking of Academy Awards, current supporting actress nominee Lupita Nyong’o of " 12 Years a Slave ", who spouts barely five lines on camera in a fetching British accent, is Lady Mary's fellow attendant. There is also a Muslim doctor (racial profiling opportunity, naturally) and a nerdy black computer specialist for added diversity.

The twist, which is revealed in the trailer, is that the terrorist mastermind behind this stunt has figured out a way to manipulate matters so that Neeson's disgruntled marshal appears to be a hijacker holding everyone hostage. It doesn't help that he keeps waving his gun and roughing up the passengers while increasing the ever-present post-9/11 levels of paranoia. In one of several welcome comic-relief moments, as the passengers appear ready to mutiny against their supposed captor, Neeson suddenly offers everyone free international travel for a year on behalf of the airline.

If it saddens anyone that the Oscar-nominated Nazi fighter in "Schindler’s List" is employing his skills as an amateur boxer these days more than his flair for the dramatic to make a living, worry not. Neeson shows he has still got it as the voice of the wee swivel-headed figure known as Bad Cop/Good Cop in " The Lego Movie ", a role that allows him to be less plastic than he is in "Non-Stop".

Positive Messages

Keeping your cool under terrifying conditions can only help you. Asking for help also makes a big difference.

Positive Role Models

Jen Summers carries herself like someone who truly appreciates what's important in life, and she helps Bill Marks out of a terrible jam. Nancy, the flight attendant, is also a great example of a cool, calm, and collected person.

Violence & Scariness

Violence is at the heart of the storyline. A plane full of passengers is threatened by a terrorist traveling with them. People are shot, beaten, threatened with knives, shoved, kicked, you name it. Some of the brawls are so raw -- bones crunch, flesh rips, bodies slam.

What's the Story?

Bill Marks ( Liam Neeson ) is an air marshal who's not a great flyer. Sometimes he relies on hard liquor to see him through but this is one flight where he shouldn't be drinking. A terrorist is on the loose, texting Bill with threats and promising a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes if his ransom demands aren't met. Bill's not sure who to trust. A female passenger ( Julianne Moore ) with seemingly nothing to lose may be the only one who believes that he isn't responsible for the chaos taking place at 30,000 feet.

Is It Any Good?

Liam Neeson is a great actor -- so much so that he elevates what is essentially forgettable material. It doesn't hurt that Julianne Moore's in the cast, too, though it really does feel as if the two are slumming it. You watch them give the movie their all and everyone pales in comparison. It's maddening. Maddening because the film does an excellent job heightening the tension. It feels almost as if the calamity is happening in real time. (If you're at all afraid of flying, prepare to be triggered.)

But although the plane on this NON-STOP flight hurtles at a breakneck pace, the film itself barely makes it to the arrival gate with momentum intact. A better explanation for all the villainy could have made sitting through all the turbulence worthwhile.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the movie's fear factor. How does this film tap into the collective fear about acts of terrorism, especially on planes? Does it have a political agenda?

Does the movie deal with any stereotypes and, if so, how does it handle them? Does it promote them or break them down?

Kinds of Kindness Review: All Star Cast Delivers a Film That is Equally Absurd and Disturbing

The exorcism review: russell crowe nearly saves a meta horrorshow, 10 famous novels with the most film adaptations.

Liam Neeson returns to theaters in Non-Stop , an aircraft hijacking thriller that is thankfully not 'Taken on a plane'. The film is wildly implausible, so absurd it absolutely requires a hearty willing suspension of disbelief. But the upside is you're in for a good time once all logic is checked at the door. Non-Stop has a frenetic pace that flows smoothly with the whodunit plot. Its mystery elements are very engaging, as the audience and protagonist guess who is the puppeteer pulling the strings.

Neeson stars as Bill Marks, an alcoholic air marshal with heavy personal baggage. His normal duty policing a flight from New York to London is interrupted by a cryptic text message on his secure cell phone. An anonymous villain claims that someone on the plane will die every twenty minutes unless $150 million dollars is deposited into a specified account. Marks relays the threat to the pilots, his superiors, a fellow air marshal on board (Anson Mount), and the head flight attendant (Michelle Dockery). Everyone is skeptical of the threat, until an important passenger dies as scheduled. Panic sets in on the plane as Marks struggles to understand how the texts are being sent. As another person dies like clockwork, it is revealed that the deposit account for the ransom is in the name of Bill Marks. Soon the passengers and security on the ground begin to believe that Marks is the hijacker and responsible for this elaborate deception. Marks must clear his name while securing the plane and unmasking the villain. His only ally it seems is Jen (Julianne Moore), a well traveled passenger that just happens to be sitting beside him when the killings start.

Non-Stop takes off like a rocket and holds the established tension well throughout the film. The ensemble cast is a bit stereotypical, but sufficiently aids Neeson in developing a convincing response to the events as the occur. Everything happens within the confines of the aircraft, so there is a claustrophobia that creeps in as characters shuffle through different parts of the plane. Spanish Director Jaume Collet-Serra had worked with Neeson previously on Unknown. He's smart to keep Neeson in almost every frame as the audience guide through the plot. We see the story through Neeson's character, so if we didn't believe him, then the entire film would fall apart.

I was pretty engaged by Non-Stop , trying to guess who on the plane is the baddie orchestrating the killings. That's what makes the movie fun. Every character introduced, including Marks, is a suspect. The entire plot is spectacularly unrealistic, so once you accept the fantasy, then you can enjoy the film for a popcorn thrill ride. I was able to accurately guess who the villain was, but did not see another twist that's revealed during the climax. It's a fairly well staged surprise, so not too much out of left field upon further review.

Non-Stop requires you to be devoid of all skepticism. It does not hold up under scrutiny. The story can be picked apart like a buzzard on road kill. But if you want some breezy entertainment after a long day, then this film delivers in spades. Neeson seems to have a knack for picking action flicks that are crowd pleasers. Non-stop is similar to the Taken series and Unknown in this regard, which is exactly what the studio is hoping for at the box office this weekend.

The 10 Best Slow Burn Romance Movies of the 21st Century, Ranked

The 25 best movie musicals of the 20th century, ranked, the 10 best jackie chan movies, ranked.

Non-Stop manages the difficult task of being a solid thriller as well as constantly silly, and the result is a film that was far more entertaining than I expected it to be.  Director Jaume Collet-Serra 's previously filmography has been underwhelming to say the least, and his previous collaboration with star Liam Neeson , the thriller Unknown , was awful.  But paired with a solid script from John W. Richardson , Christopher Roach , and Ryan Engle , Collet-Serra keeps the story moving, the whodunit a constant question, and utilizes Neeson's performance to ground the picture so that our eye-rolls don't do a complete 360.

Air Marshall Bill Marks (Neeson) is a despondent alcoholic (really top-notch hiring by the TSA) who's tasked with protecting a six-hour flight over the Atlantic Ocean.  As he's about to settle in for the duration of the trip, he receives a text message over the private network notifying him that unless $150 million is transferred to a specific bank account, one passenger will die every 20 minutes.  The story then becomes a race-against-time mixed with an investigation compounded by a wrong-man scenario when the clues to the terrorist's identity lead back to Marks.

non-stop-julianne-moore-liam-neeson

It's a scenario that's both preposterous and captivating.  As long as we're willing to play along, then it remains a fun picture and not in a "turn off your brain" way.  The script does sometimes go too far in pushing its premise, and occasionally stumbles in its haste to keep the story moving (as the camera grazes over the supporting cast, my friend leaned over to me and said "ShadyCharacters.org").  The script can also be its worst enemy since it has to throw up obstacles to stop Marks even though a terrorist would presumably want to make it as easy as possible to get the money.

This back-and-forth between a serious thriller with a worthy mystery (although I should note that unless the story is painfully predictable, I'm terrible at guessing the bad guy) and the ludicrous plot elements should create a sense of whiplash, but Collet-Serra's flat approach manages to hold everything together.  Granted, it's held together with a boring, bluish-green filter, and the visuals don't really explode until the laughable ending, but the overall consistency keeps the picture functional.  The director gets to have a little fun with showing the texting between Marks and the captor, but it's more of a matter of keeping up the energy, and Collet-Serra trusts the script and his star to keep the picture humming.

Marks is a good middle-ground between the unstoppable force of Bryan Mills from Taken and the forgettable, out-of-his-depth boob from Unknown .  His personality is perfectly illustrated when he goes into the airplane lavatory to smoke.  He's resourceful enough to know how to do it, but he can't get through the flight without lighting up.  The scene also highlights the seriousness and silliness of Non-Stop .  It shows Marks as a depressed hypocrite, but it's also a pro-tip on how to cheat a lavatory smoke detector.  Thankfully, Neeson always knows how to sell these scenes.  He's just serious enough to make us believe the situation, but not so po-faced that the plot becomes a self-serious chore.  It also helps that the cast is packed with real actors including Julianne Moore , Michelle Dockery , Scoot McNairy , Corey Stoll , Lupita Nyong'o , and Nate Parker .  No one is overplaying their part, so they all manage the balance of being just suspicious enough that we can't rule them out entirely as the villain.

I don't want to say Non-Stop works much better than it should because it is an interesting story and it's a good cast.  The real question mark was Collet-Serra, and he does a serviceable job of supporting the movie's strongest assets.  Ironically, Non-Stop would be a great movie to watch on an airplane.  It's distracting, never boring, and enough to hold you over until your reach your final destination and forget about the ride.

I have subscribed to ScreenIt for more than a decade. I check in every week to take advantage of their amazing services. Not only does their site provide a glimpse of exactly what content a movie offers, I've found the “Our Take” reviews and ratings for each movie to be right on the money every single time. I signed up to get Screen It weekly reviews a long time ago, when my kids were young and I wanted to know more about movies before we went to a theater or rented. Now one child is in law school, other in undergraduate, and I still read the weekly Screen Its! It helps me know what my husband and I want to see or rent, and what to have waiting at home that we all will enjoy when my "kids" come home. I depend on Screen It reviews. They usually just present the facts and let me decide if the movie is appropriate or of interest for my family and me. Thank you for providing that service, Screen It! Patti Petree Winston Salem, NC
I have 4 children who are now in college. I signed up for Screen It when my children were pre-teenagers. Often my children would ask to see a movie with a friend and I wished I could preview the movie prior to giving permission. A friend told me about ScreenIt.com and I found it to be the next best thing to previewing a movie. The amount of violence, sexual content, or language were always concerns for me and my husband as we raised innocent kids with morals. We constantly fought the peer pressure our kids received to see films that in our opinion were questionable. With the evidence we received at Screen It, our kids couldn't even fight us when we felt a film may have been inappropriate for them to watch. Thank you, Screen It. Continue to make this helpful service available to everyone, but especially the young parents. Christine Doherty Machesney Park, IL
Screenit.com is an amazing resource for parents, educators, church groups or anyone who wants to make an informed decision whether a movie is suitable for their viewing. The reviews and content descriptions are so detailed I am mystified how the reviewers can put them together. Scott Heathe Vancouver, BC
I love screen It! I don't know what I would do without it. It is well worth the membership. Before we take our son to the movies we check it out on screen it first. Thank you SO much for making it. Keep up the good work & keep 'em coming!!! Patrina Streety Moreno Valley California

Best sci-fi TV shows with 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes

Given the vast choice of sci-fi TV shows available to watch, it's mind-boggling that we've been able to create a list of just 15. It turns out it is, in fact, incredibly hard to achieve over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audience scores, which is how we've made our selection. 15 top picks (and some honorable mentions) have achieved this impressive accolade across the entire sci-fi TV show landscape and we're here to tell you what they are and what marvels they offer.

From retro animations to forays into superhero worlds to twisty, complex, and jam-packed tales of dystopias and dark futures, there's an abundance of choice in this list. But, they all share one thing, they've achieved what many have failed to acquire - an impressive RT score worth bragging about.

If you prefer a scintillating blockbuster over a binge-worthy show, you can check out our list of sci-fi movies with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes . If you just love sci-fi then maybe our round-ups of streaming deals , or the best sci-fi content on Disney Plus , Netflix , Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus is worth checking out.

There's a little crossover here with our best sci-fi TV shows of all time proving that when it comes to sci-fi TV shows, like most entertainment we consume, opinions are both divided and equally valid. Rotten Tomatoes has a wealth of knowledgeable critics and curators, and we’ve trusted them here to build a list of must-watch sci-fi TV shows. Let's see what's on offer.

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 100% / audience 97%

Release date: October 17, 2016

Cast: Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, and Nesta Cooper

Stream on: Netflix (US/UK/Aus)

A unique twist on the time-traveling sci-fi trope was borne when Will & Grace's Eric McCormack signed on to front Travelers. It's the post-apocalypse with a redemption arc installed as a way to travel back in time through consciousness and directly into the bodies of 'everyday' 21st-century people is discovered - in order to save them from themselves.

The main characters embark on a mission to realign the destructive path that humanity finds itself on and, ultimately, try to change their fate. It all becomes a lot more complex as the Travelers find themselves intertwined with the normal lives of the people they embody.

Unfortunately, Travelers met its end after three seasons, but it still offers up an intrepid story with depth and some sort of closure for fans. The premise of which has engrossed critics and audience alike with a highly-impressive Rotten Tomatoes score.

Release date: August 9, 2023

Cast: Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, and Zo In-sung

Stream on: Hulu (US); Disney Plus (UK/Aus)

Moving, the sci-fi action thriller show straight out of South Korea, has had an explosive effect on viewers as its first season was released across Hulu and Disney Plus in 2023. The YA superhero drama follows three high school students with mysterious superhuman abilities. Unfortunately, their talents haven't remained as quiet as their home lives once were as a powerful, and scarily violent, organization is hellbent on taking them out, one by one.

It's an adaptation from a popular Korean webtoon of the same name by graphic artist, Kang Full. While his work has been adapted to film on numerous occasions, it's this Disney Plus show that has catapulted him into the limelight with its action-packed and unique story. Fair warning, this one's gory.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 100% / audience 95%

Release date: September 13, 2022

Cast: Zach Aguilar, Kenichiro Ohashi, and Kagga Jayson

Based on the hugely popular video game, Cyberpunk 2077, from developer CD Projekt Red (The Witcher), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was picked up by Netflix as a sci-fi miniseries taking place one year before the events of the game. Reckless street kid, David Martinez, travels to Night City with dreams of becoming a mercenary outlaw, known as an edgerunner or cyberpunk, as the title suggests.

It's a quirky sci-fi anime set against the backdrop of a dystopia overwrought with cybernetics, corruption, and crime. CNET calls it, "a heart-wrenching story about the long-term impacts of violence and trauma." And with such an epic worldbuilding story, it joins the rankings of only a few on our list that achieves the 100% critics score.

Cowboy Bebop

Release date: September 18, 1997

Cast: Kôichi Yamadera, Unshô Ishizuka, and Megumi Hayashibara

Stream on: Hulu, Crunchyroll (US); Netflix (UK/Aus)

For our next entry, we're talking about the 1998 OG series rather than Netflix's 2021 live-action series that received heavy critique on Rotten Tomatoes. Originally airing only on TV Tokyo in 1998, Cowboy Bebop was swiftly picked up globally, finding a spot on Cartoon Network's late-night Adult Swim in 2001.

It's a neo-noir space Western anime set in 2071 that follows the lives of a group of bounty hunters on the spaceship, Bebop. They get swept up in chasing down criminals through a series of misadventures, all while tackling their own mysterious backstories. This genre blend has seriously impressed across 26 deeply philosophical episodes of sci-fi greatness.

Scavengers Reign

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 100% / audience 94%

Release date: October 19, 2023

Cast: Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, and Bob Stephenson

Seasons : 1

Stream on: Max (US); N/A (UK); Binge (Aus)

The 12-episode Max miniseries of Scavengers Reign is an animated sci-fi drama that is truly a sight to behold. A deep space freighter and its crew find themselves stranded on Vesta - a beautiful, but dangerous planet. They set off to explore in three groups, but eventually are reunited back at the crash-landed ship.

Despite critical acclaim, the show ran for just one season on Max. But, in an interesting twist of events, the first season has since been acquired by Netflix who are "considering" a second season, per Variety .

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 100% / audience 93%

Release date: October 26, 2022

Cast: Corey Burton, Ashley Eckstein, and Dee Bradley Baker

Stream on: Disney Plus (US/UK/Aus)

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi takes two characters rich in the lore of the franchise and explores their lives through six animated episodes jam-packed with adventure. From the prequel trilogy era, two Jedi, Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, are followed through various points by following two very different paths. And over the six episodes, there’s so much to learn.

Lucasfilm Animation brought out a second season, a six-part anthology under the name, Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, which dives deeper into two new characters in the Star Wars universe. This time round embedded in the Galactic Empire. Read our review here . It sits in good company too, with Star Wars: The Clone Wars later on in our list.

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 98% / audience 94%

Release date: March 20, 2024

Cast: Cal Dodd, George Buza, and Holly Chou

Despite only being released in 2024, X-Men '97 has clearly impressed with a top Rotten Tomatoes score to prove it. In true X-Men fashion, it's the tale of a band of mutants learning to use their gifts to protect a world where they're unappreciated for their skills. It's a revival of 1992's animated series, picking up where the story was left in a world after the loss of Professor X.

The animation style has critics feeling nostalgic, "Everything about '97 reflects an affection and thoughtfulness, not just for the Saturday morning cartoon but for the X-Men, too," says Vox . If you're looking to remember X-Men as you may have first experienced it, X-Men '97 provides.

Battlestar Galactica

Rotten Tomatoes score: critics 95% / audience 94%

Release date: October 18, 2004

Cast: Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, and Jamie Bamber

Stream on: Amazon Prime (US); available to buy in UK/Aus

The Battlestar Galactica franchise is vast. Amongst the books, novels, comics, board games, and video games was an evolution into TV that took two fairly short-lived shows and a miniseries before hitting the spot with this, 2004-2009's Battlestar Galactica sci-fi epic reboot.

The crew, composed of the last surviving humans after the Cylons annihilated the 12 colonies, board the Galactica to lead a fleet of the last of civilization heading to the fabled 13th colony, Earth. Over a wildly entertaining four seasons filled with war between the Colonials and the Cylon, it all went a bit awry in the final episodes, but BSG is no doubt to thank for a lot of sci-fi-inspired creations that have followed in its footsteps (or jumps).

Justice League

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 95% / Audience 94%

Release date: November 17, 2001

Cast: Carl Lumbly, Phil LaMarr, and Michael Rosenbaum

Seasons : 5

Stream on: Netflix, Max (US); Netflix (UK/Aus)

In a list laden with animation, 2001's Justice League is another shining star. What's not to love about a superhero mash-up? Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and a band of other superheroes are brought together to fight threats they can't tackle alone, despite their superhuman abilities. Together though? An incredibly powerful team capable of fighting off the biggest of threats.

Justice League is a franchise that has taken many forms and the show itself even rebranded after the first two seasons, returning for three more as Justice League Unlimited. Almost every season on RT sits above the 90% mark (or just below), which in RT standards, is a very impressive feat.

The Expanse

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 95% / Audience 92%

Release date: November 23, 2015

Cast: Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham

Seasons : 6

Stream on: Amazon Prime (US/UK/Aus)

Featured on our best sci-fi TV shows based on books guide, The Expanse started its life on screen with Syfy before moving to Amazon Prime. Written by James S. A. Corey, a pen name for writing duo, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, it's the tale of a political space landscape where the Solar System has been colonized. As three warring factions battle it out, divided between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, a group of differing personalities are brought together to unravel and explore a conspiracy that could devastate everything.

Running for six epic seasons, The Expanse has been lauded by critics and audience members alike with impressive scores across the board. Unfortunately, the show ended before addressing the last three books of the series leaving some open-ended storylines, but at least Amazon breathed new life into it when it almost met its end three seasons in on Syfy.

Marvel's Agents of the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 95% / Audience 91%

Release date: September 24, 2013

Cast: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, and Brett Dalton

Marvel's Agents of the S.H.I.E.L.D marked the first endeavor into TV for the MCU. Following the spy agency for superheroes, the team embarks on missions to handle the strangest of cases in the Marvel world.

The series expands the MCU down new, and wildly mysterious, paths. It wasn't clear how well it'd translate into TV, but its seven-season run shows off its capability to impress. Unsurprising really, considering it is rich in MCU lore after all. The show twists off into even more pathways throughout its run with time-traveling, world-saving, and fugitive-chasing adventures.

Orphan Black

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 93% / Audience 92%

Release date: March 30, 2013

Cast: Tatiana Maslany, Dylan Bruce, and Jordan Gavaris

Stream on: AMC+ (US), ITVX (UK), Stan (Aus)

As is true with almost every sci-fi concept imaginable, the storyline can be incredibly complex and adapting it for television requires intricacy and a great cast. For Orphan Black, this statement is undoubtedly true. Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) witnesses the suicide of a woman. The big twist; she looks just like her. She quickly learns of her involvement in an illegal cloning experiment which places many more 'Sarahs' just like her. It’s the controversial topic of creating humans in an inhumane way and the show tackles it with bravado, twisted tales of conspiracy, and the fight for survival.

It also spawned Orphan Black: Echoes, set 37 years after the end of the original show, and explores a whole new story still firmly placed in the same universe that fans came to know and love.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 93% / Audience 91%

Release date: October 3, 2008

Cast: Tom Kane, Dee Bradley Baker, and Matt Lanter

An animated series exploring the Clone Wars that fits neatly into Star Wars canon is up next. Adding layers to the prequel trilogy era, like Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi earlier in our list, The Clone Wars explores the conflict between the Republic and the Separatists. It brings together lots of Star Wars fan favorites from Anakin Skywalker to Obi-Wan Kenobi to Yoda, and many, many more.

Although they've got the same, or very similar names, 2008's Star Wars: The Clone Wars is not to be confused with 2008's The Clone Wars movie or 2003's Clone Wars TV show. While it was initially planned as an anthology series, later seasons explored longer story arcs over several episodes.

Some of the characters seen in the show have gone on to appear in other Star Wars works' like The Book of Boba Fett , The Mandalorian , and the Ahsoka spin-off.

The Twilight Zone

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 92% / Audience 96%

Release date: October 2, 1959

Cast: Rod Serling, Robert McCord and Jay Overholts

Stream on: Paramount Plus (US); available to buy in the UK and Aus

Rod Serling's dreamt-up sci-fi anthology series, The Twilight Zone, is a piece of iconic TV wizardry. Every single episode brings a new twisty, creepy, and surreal tale doused in beloved sci-fi tropes. Reimagined and rebirthed by Nope's Jordan Peele, the 1959 original can still carry its own in the timeline with ideas so ahead of its time and could've most certainly lived in the now.

It's a comprehensive sci-fi collection filled with 156 episodes of independent and watchable tales. Some funny, a large number of them disturbing, and almost every single one just a little bit unusual. The Twilight Zone is almost essential watching for sci-fi fans from aliens to monsters to humans now living with pig snouts and mouths.

Stranger Things

Rotten Tomatoes score: Critics 92% / Audience 90%

Release Date: July 15, 2016

Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder

Stream on: Netflix (US/UK,Aus)

Despite having the 'lowest' Rotten Tomatoes score on our list, Stranger Things is an iconic sci-fi/horror mashup drowned in 80s nostalgia, adventure, and emphasizing the strength of friendship even when coming up against the most dangerous circumstances. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, the residents are entwined into a spooky parallel universe called the Upside Down.

A group of young friends leads the charge as they tackle the strange goings on in their town, the monsters that lurk beneath, and the conspiracy that binds it all together.

Identical twins, the Duffer brothers, dreamt up Stranger Things and brought it to life for Netflix, with five incredible seasons that take the breath out of you at every twist and turn.

Season five (the final season) will be released in 2025.

Honorable mentions

No doubt there's an abundance of titles you'll be shocked to see missing from this list. Us too. But, the rules apply, and if RT critics and audiences alike haven't voted, they don’t appear here. That being said, there must be an honorable mention given to five shows in particular. Three; Pluto, Utopia, and Pantheon did achieve the 90%+ score but weren’t critiqued by enough curators to round it out.

There are two shows that we must mention because we just can’t quite believe they fell short. It was close too. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Fallout both missed out by just 1% on the audience side. Fallout stormed onto our screens in 2024 with the iconic video game franchise brought to life by Amazon Prime. Deep Space Nine, a true classic from the Trekky franchise, also must be mentioned because it’s iconic sci-fi and deserves to be talked about here.

Critics love it, audiences hate it, now it’s one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever

Earlier this month, we wrote about a surprise entry into the Netflix top 10 movie charts. Under Paris came out of nowhere to dominate the streaming service in June, and two weeks later, it’s still hanging around in the top 10 in the US. The sustained popularity actually pushed the shark attack flick into Netflix’s 10 most popular non-English movies of all time .

  • Troll | 103,000,000 views
  • Society of the Snow | 98,500,000 views
  • Nowhere | 85,700,000 views
  • The Platform | 82,800,000 views
  • Under Paris | 69,600,000 views
  • Through My Window | 61,100,000 views
  • AKA | 60,900,000 views
  • Blood Red Sky | 60,900,000 views
  • My Name Is Vendetta | 56,400,000 views
  • Black Crab | 53,900,000 views

Placement on this list is determined by how many times a movie was viewed in its first 91 days on the streaming service. Under Paris has only been on Netflix for 16 days at the time of writing, so there’s a real chance that it could rise even higher in the coming weeks.

One fascinating wrinkle about the rapid ascent of Under Paris is that general audiences seem to hate it. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is usually best avoided, but there don’t seem to be any ulterior motives behind the overwhelmingly negative reviews . Hundreds of viewers really didn’t enjoy watching this movie, yet its popularity endures.

Even more interesting is the fact that critics are more forgiving of the movie’s flaws. As we noted in our last piece about the movie, Variety said it “adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long,” and The Guardian called it “one of the best shark movies ever made.” It’s still sitting at a respectable 65% on the Tomatometer with 34 reviews from critics.

Under Paris seems destined to remain an enigma for the foreseeable future, but one that might end up being the most popular non-English movie in Netflix history.

Netflix is replacing Jordan Peele’s best-rated movie with one that has just 69% on Rotten Tomatoes

Jordan Peele’s hit horror movie has been told to Get Out, but there’s a new one coming to Netflix

Steven Yeun in Nope

Jordan Peele’s most popular movie Get Out has an almost flawless 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best Netflix movies , but it will be removed from the UK’s Netflix today, June 15, to make room for one of his more underrated movies Nope instead, which only has a 69% rating.

Despite its lower score, Nope is still worth your time and even though it may not be as popular as Get Out , it’s a must watch especially if you’re keen to complete his most recent trilogy of works, with his sophomore movie Us also highly rated by critics.

Nope blends the horror, mystery and sci-fi genres to create a truly unique movie that will stay with you for a long time, there’s a few scenes in particular that I’m still thinking about long after I saw this movie in theatres, two years ago.

There’s a great cast attached too with Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun all in leading roles. So if you haven’t seen Nope , I highly recommend checking it out now it’s on the best streaming service .

Elsewhere, Netflix has just cancelled a hit animation show with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, so some big shake ups are happening within their library lately. For those in the US and Australia, you’ll still be able to stream Get Out on Peacock and Prime Video, respectively, and Nope on Starz and Paramount Plus .

What is Nope about?

In Nope , we follow a rancher named OJ who trains horses for movie productions. He works with his sister Emerald, who recently lost their father after small metallic objects began rapidly falling from the sky, one of which killed their father.

Following this tragedy, they realise something sinister is going on and decide to investigate further, especially after they’ve become desperate and were fired from a set after one of their horses violently freaked out. This led them to work with the owner of a nearby theme park, who is trying to profit from whatever’s going on in the skies.

It is quite a difficult movie to sum up and explores complex themes, with director Jordan Peele saying he wanted to address society’s “addiction to spectacle” in an interview with Empire Magazine .

This is definitely one of those movies that you should allow to shock you, so avoid spoilers and go into this one knowing as little as possible before you stream it on Netflix – I promise it’s worth it.

Lucy is a long-time movie and television lover who is an approved critic on Rotten Tomatoes. She has written several reviews in her time, starting with a small self-ran blog called Lucy Goes to Hollywood before moving onto bigger websites such as What's on TV and What to Watch, with TechRadar being her most recent venture. Her interests primarily lie within horror and thriller, loving nothing more than a chilling story that keeps her thinking moments after the credits have rolled. Many of these creepy tales can be found on the streaming services she covers regularly.

When she’s not scaring herself half to death with the various shows and movies she watches, she likes to unwind by playing video games on Easy Mode and has no shame in admitting she’s terrible at them. She also quotes The Simpsons religiously and has a Blinky the Fish tattoo, solidifying her position as a complete nerd.

"I Think She Does": One Of The Acolyte's Jedi Is Breaking A Massive George Lucas Rule

How many episodes of the acolyte are there & when is the finale, star wars' new sith assassin has palpatine's most dangerous power - was it common among the sith.

  • The Acolyte faces review-bombing, but new viewership data shows positive performance compared to other streaming shows.
  • Luminate's data from June 7-13 indicates The Acolyte's success, despite Netflix's dominating presence in the top ten rankings.
  • Disney's strategic release schedule may impact accurate measurements of the show's success, but early signs suggest a strong start.

The Acolyte , Disney's newest Star Wars TV show, may be being review-bombed - but new viewership data gives a sense of what's really going on. The Star Wars fandom has always been prone to division, but Leslye Headland's Star Wars Disney+ TV show seems to have become a massive flashpoint. The Acolyte has been review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes ; the audience score there now stands at an improbable 14 percent (lower than the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special ).

New viewership data from Variety gives a sense of what's really going on, though. Provided by Luminate, this data shows the minutes watched of every streaming original TV show over the period from June 7 to June 13. It's largely a boost for Netflix, but The Acolyte 's performance is very interesting indeed.

What Does This Viewing Data Tell Us About The Acolyte?

It's a mixed picture for the disney+ tv show.

The real winner of the week here is, of course, Netflix - but it's important to note that Netflix TV shows are boosted by this specific metric. The streaming giant release multiple episodes at a time, whereas The Acolyte - the only entry from any other streaming service - only dropped a single episode last week. This means we're effectively comparing four episodes of Bridgerton season 3 to just a single Star Wars episode ; it's not like for like.

The next qualification is in terms of the period covered. Luminate's data runs from June 7 to 13, meaning it covers the weekend after The Acolyte episodes 1 and 2 . It's reasonable to assume a lot of viewers waited until the weekend to check out the latest Star Wars TV show. We won't really get a measure of the show's success until there's more data. Even a comparison of weekends 1 and 2 won't be representative, because the premiere dropped two episodes and only one released last week. Disney's release schedule seems almost designed to obfuscate.

Still, Disney will be quite pleased with The Acolyte 's performance here. The Acolyte is literally the only non-Netflix show to appear in the top ten for that period, suggesting it's a success. The scale of that success will become clear over the weeks, as we get a sense of whether viewers stuck around or dropped off.

    Non-Stop. "Non-Stop". 9. Critics Consensus: Non-Stop is a Bumpy Ride

Non-Stop 62%. Having proven his tough-guy bona fides on the streets of Paris (), in the desert (), across the wolf-infested tundra (), and on the sea (), Liam Neeson brings his unflappable demeanor (and his unforgiving fists) to the skies in Non-Stop.Critics say the result is reasonably entertaining but utterly preposterous, with a few good fight scenes and a couple groan-worthy plot twists.
