What does a perfect day with the family look like?

Imagine a day filled with laughter, shared meals, and playful adventures. Waking up refreshed, a family connects over breakfast, sharing dreams and creating plans. They explore together, be it a museum visit or a quiet picnic, finding joy in nature, or friendly competition. As the sun sets, reflections filled with gratitude paint the evening, solidifying the love and connection that makes the day perfect, not for its grandeur but for the simple treasures of being together.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The Art of the Technical Presentation: How to Present Technical Topics to Non-Technical People

latest presentation topics technical

So, you need to make a technical presentation to people outside of your field. It should be easy, right? All you have to do is let the bounty of your knowledge flow forth. But what if your message gets lost in the gap between your expertise and your audience’s point of view? Find out how to conquer the divide with an artfully designed presentation.

Although great presentations are a mix of education, communication, and collaboration, in the end, they all boil down to persuasion. Luckily, you don’t need a degree in psychology to get through to your listeners. These five tips will help you build a simple presentation that gets your message across, imparts key technical details, and leaves you and your audience feeling like you got what you needed.

Focus on your purpose

What’s the nitty gritty reason why you’re doing this presentation? Whether you’re seeking funding, partnership, a job, or a sale, you’re essentially trying to persuade your audience to take action.

What do you want them to do when they’ve heard your spiel? Remember this as you plan each step of your presentation, and make sure that every element you add contributes to your purpose. If you notice your content going off on a tangent, cut that part out. Keep it tight, and you’ll keep their attention.

Find the Gap

Once you’ve got a clear purpose in mind, think about why you need to do this presentation. There must be something that your audience doesn’t know or fully appreciate yet, because otherwise they’d already be with you.

But be careful here. A lot of us fall into the trap of thinking they need to hear everything we know. If you take the time now to tease out the information that’s critical to your message, you’ll save yourself from overwhelming your listeners and losing their support.

What’s the simplest way you can explain the difference between what they’re doing now, and what will happen if they adopt your idea? An infographic can be a powerful and succinct way to make your message hit home, and Beautiful.ai’s templates can make it easy.

One trick that will help you explain technical things in simpler terms is to empathize with your audience. What do they want to get from working with you? Let’s say you’re speaking to investors. They want a return on their investment, right? So you’ll need to highlight facts, figures, and examples that show why your proposal is going to profit them in the end. Think about who you’re speaking to, and how cooperating with you will make their lives better.

Some other common needs that your project might meet are helping your audience to save time, have less stress, or enjoy better relationships. Make sure you frame your request in terms of how it will benefit your viewers.

Images can be a powerful way to help listeners picture the results that you’re promising in vivid detail. With Beautiful.ai’s image gallery, you’ll have thousands of photos, icons, and visual elements at your fingertips that you can add to your presentation for free. You can also upload your own custom images with an effortless drag and drop.

Keep it short

Another way to make a technical topic easy to digest is to keep your presentation brief. One trick is to create an outline to distill your message into 3-5 key points. Another is to use Guy Kowasaki’s 10/20/20 rule (10 slides, 20 minutes, and a minimum of 30 font) to force yourself to be concise.

Some technical presenters check their urge to splurge by only addressing “ what ” their idea will accomplish, rather than the “how”.

And of course, you can save words and pack a stronger punch by incorporating visual elements into your presentation. Beautiful.ai has templates to help you easily build a pictograph or specialized slide with a Venn diagram, flowchart, bar graph, and more to make your point in fewer words with a greater lasting impression.

Did you know that people remember things they learned with an accompanying visual over 6x longer than information they only heard verbally?

Use good design

Although you can insert good information into any presentation maker, even the most brilliant thoughts will be lost on your audience if the styling doesn’t flow. Awkward spacing, inconsistent colors and fonts, and illegible sizing are hugely distracting to your audience and can steal your thunder in a heartbeat.

Beautiful.ai uses smart slides technology to automatically adjust these elements on every slide. Whether you work with our templates for slides and presentations or customize a look that’s all your own, no matter what images or elements you add, the rules of good design will be applied. Your slides will come out balanced and beautiful and your message will be crystal clear. It’s like having a pro designer fixing each slide as you work.

No more all-night formatting battles or embarrassing, cluttered messes. Just powerful presentations that persuade your audience and make you proud.

When all is said and done, your technical presentation can get through to non-technical people if you stay focused on your purpose, bridge the gap between what they already know and what they need to learn to get on-board with your plan, empathize with their needs, and boil your message down into its most persuasive elements.

You can make an outstanding impact with even the most technical presentations if you start with an intelligent plan and use specialized design tools like Beautiful.ai. Try it today.

As we’ve briefly mentioned above, your presentation design can have quite an impact on how your audience engages with the presentation material. When an audience sees a presentation that stands out, it will stick in their mind after the presentation is over. This is what businesses want when it comes to crafting powerful presentations.

If your presentation is bland and stale, your information will feel bland and stale. On the other hand, if your design or visual content is too over the top, it can take away from the information you are trying to convey to your audience.

Striking this balance in your design is key to a successful PowerPoint presentation. Often, presentation trends are popular because they are effective when communicating to an audience while also drawing the eye.

Let's Dive Into Some Of The Latest Presentation Design Trends

A modern presentation usually involves set color palettes, asymmetric layouts, different shape s, and other design elements.

Let’s take a look at a few of the modern presentations and modern design trends for 2023 that you might consider using for your next presentation.

Abstract Shapes That Dominate Slides

latest presentation topics technical

One of the popular presentation design trends taking over the digital world right now is abstract and geometric shapes. Whether you’re creating a Google Slides, Prezi, Canva, or PowerPoint presentation design, shapes, and image overlays can be a great way to take your presentations from boring to bold.

In this example here , triangle shapes and images have been used to keep and direct the attention of the audience.

It’s also important to note that these shapes and elements don’t take away from the content on the slides, rather, they create an engaging slide that piques the viewer’s visual interest and keeps them informed.

Unique AI Generated Motion Graphics & Images

Another design trend we see emerging in 2023 is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designers utilize programs to create animated graphics, images, flowing shapes, and other design elements.

AI generated graphics can be used to create a unique design and custom images for your business slide decks. This, along with the growing demand for virtual reality likely means we will see increased use of Artificial Intelligence throughout the graphic design industry.

Inclusive Visuals, Graphics and Fonts

A big presentation design trend we have seen in the past couple of years and into 2023 is the use of inclusive visuals. The graphic design industry has seen a big move towards accessibility and inclusivity. This has meant using different shapes, fonts, and images that reflect a more inclusive community.

Not only do these inclusive visuals, graphics, and fonts have visual appeal, but they also mean that your presentations and slides are more accessible to a larger audience.

Modern Minimalism - Say More With Less

latest presentation topics technical

A design trend we are seeing pop up across a lot of different industries is a kind of modern minimalism. The famous saying goes “keep it simple, stupid” and you could argue that the same applies to PowerPoint presentations.

While a trendy PowerPoint presentation design, neon colors, and colorful text blocks might initially grab the eyes, it can also distract your audience and take away from the information you are trying to communicate.

In this example below, we’ve created modern slides for Indigo that lean towards a minimalistic style. The presentation uses their brand palette and custom fonts to great an engaging presentation with a personal touch that doesn’t distract the viewer.

Dark Modes - Sleek and Secure

latest presentation topics technical

One of the popular graphic design trends for 2023 utilizes dark mode and dark backgrounds to make their slides stand out in the crowd without overwhelming the audience.

A dark background and dark theme can create depth in your graphic designs which can pull your audience in.

These dark PowerPoint presentation trends don’t necessarily require you only to use blacks and greys in your color schemes. Instead, you can use different shades of some dark colors that will create a dark mode style of presentation.

T he end result is something that the audience expects but still engages them throughout your presentation.

Making An Impact With Muted Images

latest presentation topics technical

While color palettes, bold color blocks, serif fonts, and other design trends all seem to be on the rise, current presentation design trends have also seen an increased use of muted image overlays.

Muted images are images that have been edited with a filter that dulls the brightness and makes them a bit moodier. Instead of immediately grabbing the eye of the viewer, these images blend more into the background and can create more depth in your presentations.

BIG, Bold Backgrounds

latest presentation topics technical

One last new trend we’ve seen in presentations this year is big, bold style, particularly when it comes to the background. With eye-catching backgrounds, you can immediately grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged throughout the entire presentation.

While a minimalistic trend may cater to certain audiences, big backgrounds can help you stand out in the crowd.

When it comes to taking design tips, you need to consider your content, your audience, and your overall brand identity. So while nature-inspired themes and geometric shapes might work for some brands, bold colors, big backgrounds, and fun fonts might work for others.

In this example for the Seatle Krakken , we’ve matched the vibe of the sports brand with bright colors and bold backgrounds.

Top Presentation Design Trends of 2022, According to Creative Experts

Jordan Turner

Updated: December 14, 2021

Published: April 26, 2021

In early 2020, the world as we knew it was flipped upside down. Businesses were forced to pivot in the face of the pandemic, and as a result many companies adopted a remote work culture.

A woman using presentation design trends to create a compelling presentation

Remote work changed the way organizations and teams worked — and even how companies communicated to prospective customers and acquired new business. Employees leaned into virtual designs, presentations, and events to communicate both internally and externally.

The graphic design landscape, as a result, has changed dramatically over the past year.

Now, presentations need to work harder than ever to connect, engage, and inspire audiences into action. In fact, over 35 million PowerPoint presentations  are given each day to over 500 million audiences — but 79% of those audiences  believe most presentations they see are boring.

To help you crush your next presentation deck, we've rounded up the top presentation design trends of 2021, as predicted by creative industry experts and presentation power-users.

Here, learn from three creative experts from leading companies in the tech space on the four biggest presentation design trends that will emerge in 2021.

→ Free Download: 10 PowerPoint Presentation Templates [Access Now]

1. There will be increased empathy found in design.

Marissa Latshaw, Founder of Latshaw Marketing , says: "Impactful, inspiring design starts with empathy.

Empathy is one of the most powerful tools in the creative toolbox. The good news is that empathy — the ability to feel, understand, and respond to the feelings of others — is innate in us all. Our job as creators is to harness this empathy for better design, marketing, and storytelling.

Empathy boosts creativity. The empathy/creativity connection is strong — as shown in many studies over the past decade. One study asked participants to create and name a potato chip  product for pregnant women. Before beginning the task, half of the participants were told to envision how the consumer would feel  while eating the snack. The other half were asked to imagine what the consumer would think . An independent jury found the product concepts of the first, feelings-focused, empathy-activated group to be more original than the control group.

Empathy is also vital for inclusivity. More than ever, we want to communicate with others in a way that is genuinely inclusive. An empathetic approach ensures we understand the goals, needs, fears, and values of all the people we wish to engage (beyond just the way they relate to our brand or product). This is a call for us all to become proactive about inclusivity, and it starts with empathy.

Empathy creates connection. From in-home fitness giant Peloton to the new voice-based, social network Clubhouse , we are constantly finding new and innovative ways to connect with one another.

Both brands demonstrate empathy as they address the palpable and growing need for connection. They re-imagined how we work out and share conversations in a more socially-connected way.

Designing anything — from a presentation to an ad campaign — is no different. Each is an opportunity to reimagine and innovate how we engage and connect with the world.

Empathy helps us to stand out by standing in another's shoes. Creating one-of-a-kind, empathy-driven experiences ultimately brings us closer together and inspires action."

2. Designers will lean into radical simplicity.

Eliot Garcia Weisberg, Creative Director at Airbnb , talks to us about all things radical simplicity.

He says, "Despite its incredible power to connect us, teleconferencing stunts audience energy and empathy. Attention — already a fleeting resource — is further divided between the screens, speakers, slides, and sounds of the virtual landscape.

The feedback loop from audience to presenter is nearly dead. The impact of environmental design is lost. In our new world, the value of a single pixel on the cluttered screens of remote audiences is immense. And the screens themselves— their quality and colors— vary wildly from member to member.

The key to designing for the 'new normal' is embracing radical simplicity. A designer must reduce a slide to its core idea, then push to simplify even further. They musk ask themselves — 'Do I really need to show this?' Then challenge themselves every time the answer is 'Yes.'

Slide counts will be drastically reduced. Superfluous icons will fade away. Bullets will become a distant memory. Subtle textures will be replaced by solid colors. We'll see a shift away from image masks and bold text over photos. Instead, we'll see full-screen photographs or simple statements that make their point obvious and drive core concepts home.

We'll spend more time on the speaker— full screen— than ever before. Their delivery, from tone to inflection, will become a design element. Rehearsals will replace design reviews.

The end result will feel much more human. And, if successful, radically simple."

3. Great design will hold the viewers' attention.

"For decades, the job of creative designers, writers, and videographers was to get attention. Cut through the noise. Deliver ads that stand out. Use creativity as a hook," Adam Morgan, Adobe's  Executive Creative Director, says about holding an audience's attention.

He adds, "But in today's ultra-connected digital world, that hammer and nail approach isn't always the answer. People choose what they want. The trend I'm seeing today is to hold attention. Less push and more pull. We have to create experiences that provide real value to an individual — not just catch their attention with shock value or clickbait.

"We have to create communities where people want to consume our brand experiences. We have to know those individuals and groups, what they care about, and provide new information wrapped in an emotional blanket. We have to stand for things they value."

Rather than a hard sell, we have to share a story that they believe in and be open and transparent with why it matters to them.

What this means for creative teams is that you can't just make it pretty or funny. You have to think deeply about what your brand means to customers and then create immersive experiences that connect. It's no longer just about the creative craft of colors and fonts and icons. It's about stories and meaning and authenticity and purpose. Don't just get attention with your work. Hold  attention. So that you can build brands that grow and last."

4. Designers should use clean, minimalistic fonts and calming colors.

Lastly, we tapped into Beautiful.ai's Creative Director Anuja Kanani's expertise to unravel one more presentation design trend for 2021.

Kanani says, "Choosing the best colors for a presentation, and good presentation fonts, are two of the most important elements of deck design. Each design decision— shapes, words, and images— affect the way your audience feels about the presentation, but colors hold the most influence.

Taking the place of bold, bright primary colors, 2021 has warranted more relaxed, muted colors following the chaos of 2020. Not only are low-saturated and pastel colors more calming, they're more organic and natural, perhaps making audiences feel more at ease and confident in the presentation in front of them.

Using a consistent, complimentary color theme strategically can help position your brand in the mind of your customers," adds Kanani. She recommends limiting your presentation to 3-4 colors in your palette, with one accent color to highlight key points and bring balance and harmony to your presentation.

3 different color options that complement each other, all pastels (light blue, peach, and dark blue)

The trend of minimalism extends to good presentation fonts, too. Seasoned presenters are opting for clean minimal fonts, such as Open Sans or Jost, and rejecting traditional fonts like Arial or Times New Roman in 2021.

Kanani adds, "Custom typography improves your brand recognition, while selecting different weights or styles can help control the narrative on each slide."

Presentation Graphics

You've probably caught onto the fact that over-complicated slides are a thing of the past. Studies show  that 35% of millennials say they will only engage with content they feel has a great story or theme, so to avoid boring them into a snooze, use visuals to control your narrative.

Presentation graphics, or rich visuals, can help you paint a picture in bite-sized chunks so that your audience can digest the information you're presenting to them.

Kanani says, "Engaging, inspiring visuals in presentations make your content compelling, eye-catching, and helps convey your story beautifully."

Choosing rich icons, diagrams or infographics, and quality photos are powerful tools to help make your presentation more memorable and impactful.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

latest presentation topics technical

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

How To Submit a Technical Presentation

Giving a technical presentation is one of the most valuable ways to be involved at a technical event. this post will show you how..

Join the DZone community and get the full member experience.

There is no shortage of technical events such as conferences, meetups, trainings, hackathons, and so on. These events are a great way to learn new things, connect with people, and share knowledge with others. One of the most valuable and exciting ways to share knowledge is by giving a technical presentation.

Today, we will look at how to submit a technical presentation for an event and get some personal recommendations from me, as well. Though we will specifically gear the information for the NODES 2024 call for proposals, nearly everything discussed can be applied to other technical events and speaking engagements.

Let's get started!

Event Research

No matter what event you are interested in, do your research! Find out about the event, their goals, the audience, and the types of presentations they are looking for. This information will help you decide if the event is a good fit, as well as help you tailor your submission to the attendees.

NODES 2024 is devoted to technical presentations related to graph data and technologies, with a special focus on community stories and perspectives. The audience will be looking for content to inspire ideas, learn how to do/build something, gather tips and tricks, and add skills to their toolbelt for business or personal projects. Developers, data scientists, and other technical professionals are the core audience.

NODES 24 event information

Now let's decide whether to speak.

Speakers Wanted!

Deciding to submit a presentation to an event is a commitment. It can be intimidating to put yourself out there and share your knowledge with others, plus the effort and time it takes to build and polish your content. But it can also be a rewarding and invigorating experience. I always remind myself that my experience and learning journey is unique and can hopefully inspire or help someone else. Everyone can contribute value to a conversation!

As a speaker, you will have the opportunity to share your expertise, connect with others, and learn from the community. Yes, a speaker can (and should) learn from attendees. Understanding what problems others are solving or where gaps are can help you learn more about your topic, plus improve your future content. :)

NODES 2024 will be virtual, so no travel or logistics are required. The event will be held over 24 hours, and sessions will be recorded and available for attendees to watch on-demand after the event. So you will have the opportunity to reach a global audience, as well as promote or provide evidence for your efforts!

So, if you are thinking about submitting a presentation to an event, go for it! And if you have decided to submit, congratulate yourself on being courageous and taking the first step. If you're still on the fence, take some time to think about it and consider reaching out to the event organizers or other speakers for advice. I'm always happy to chat about speaking and help others get started!

Deciding on a Topic

Choosing a topic for your presentation can be challenging. You want to pick something that you are passionate about, that you have experience with, or want to learn about. Try to pick things you like or love. That enthusiasm will come through in your presentation and help keep you motivated as you prepare. If you're interested in the topic, it's likely that someone else will be, too.

What projects or technologies are you currently working on? What problems have you solved or are trying to solve? What tools or techniques have you found helpful? What do you wish you knew when you started working with a technology? What mistakes do you want to help others avoid or learn from your experience?

For NODES 2024, the event is focused on graph data and technologies to interact with graphs. Here are some topic ideas to get you started:

  • How graphs solve a specific problem (broad or narrow)
  • How to build applications that interact with a graph
  • How graphs integrate with AI/GenAI
  • Mistakes or pitfalls to avoid with graph databases, tools, use cases, and more
  • How to interact with or get data into or out of a graph database
  • Working with graphs in a larger system or architecture (including improving operations)

This list could continue on, but hopefully, these give some good starting points. Once you have a topic in mind, it's time to write a session abstract and submit it!

Session Abstract and Submission

The session abstract is a short description of your presentation that will be used to promote your session to attendees. It should be clear, brief, and interesting. It should give attendees an idea of what to expect from your presentation and why they should attend.

There are a few things I always look for when I'm on a program committee choosing sessions for an event.

Aim for a descriptive phrase that gives attendees an idea of what your presentation is about. If you have a clever or catchy title, that's always a plus (but not required), and make sure it still states your topic.

This is the core of your submission. It should detail what you will cover in your presentation, such as the problem you are solving, what aspects of a technology are involved, what tools could be used, and what attendees will learn.

Notes for the Committee

Include any additional information for the committee here. This could be special requirements or why your content is a good fit for the event. I like to include why I felt my topic is important and/or how my experience could help others. Keep this part brief, but it can help differentiate when there are multiple sessions with similar topics.

For a bio about yourself, keep it short, but be sure to outline your experience and specialties. If you have content or socials, highlight 1-2 accounts so that attendees or program committee members can learn a bit about you.

There are also a few other things to keep in mind when writing your abstract.

Who is your presentation for? What's their level of experience? What will they gain from attending your session? Choose wording and technologies that resonate with your audience to help readers connect with your content.

Format/Length

Will your presentation be a talk, a demo, a workshop, a panel, or something else? Are you giving a demo or live coding? Sometimes you select a format on the submission form, but you can also mention sub-formats with terms like live demo, hands-on, interactive discussion, etc.

I also recommend writing your abstract in a text editor or word processor first. This way, you can easily check for spelling/grammar errors, and you can save your work to reuse or reference later. Editors also typically include work/character counting tools to help track length. Once you have your abstract written, you can copy and paste it into the submission form.

Tips and Tricks

There are a few things that can help make your abstract stand out and increase your chances of being selected. On the flip side, there are a few things to avoid that can hurt your chances.

Be Descriptive + Brief

Provide enough details within 1-3 paragraphs so the program committee and attendees get a clear picture of what you will present. If you use jargon or acronyms, explain them. Even if attendees to your session are familiar with them, the program committee may not be, and that can make them feel less confident accepting a session. You can always explain acronyms in the notes section if you're unsure.

Be Inviting

You don't need fancy or fluent language, but a genuine passion or interest in your topic can go a long way. If you are excited about your topic, it will show in your abstract and presentation.

Developers (especially) don't like to be misled. Avoid hiding negative aspects and sales or marketing tactics. Honesty and authenticity build respect.

There are also some things to avoid when it comes to abstract submissions.

Minimal Effort

People can tell when you don't care. One-line abstracts and bare minimum details can tell readers that you don't care about the topic or helping others learn. It's okay to be brief, but make sure to provide enough information to be helpful.

In It for Me

Attendees are giving up their time and focus to attend your session, event organizers are pouring money and time into the event, and companies are sponsoring the event or employees. They deserve valuable content in return. It's not about the speaker, it's about the attendee. Speakers are only valuable if they have an audience.

Don't cause readers to be like Picard and Riker here. ;)

Picard and Riker

For NODES 2024, all of these things apply, but there are a couple of additional things to keep in mind. The event is focused on graph data and technologies to interact with graphs. Be sure to mention how graphs are involved in your topic (I've seen abstracts that don't mention them at all!).

Also, NODES is meant to showcase community stories and real-world uses, so be sure to include your honest, unique experience or perspective in your abstract. Sessions are geared for technical audiences, so try to include aspects such as architecture, demos, code, tools, solutions, and so on. Even if you don't write live code, you can still show code snippets or tool screenshots to help illustrate your points.

Wrapping Up!

Today, we walked through how to submit a technical presentation for an event. We discussed doing your research, deciding on a topic, writing a session abstract, and preparing for your presentation. We also covered some tips and tricks for writing a valuable abstract that will hopefully increase your chances of being selected.

If you are interested in submitting a presentation to NODES 2024, the call for proposals is open until June 15, 2024. You can find more information and submit your presentation here .

Happy coding and best wishes on your submissions!

Let's be friends:

The state of AI in early 2024: Gen AI adoption spikes and starts to generate value

If 2023 was the year the world discovered generative AI (gen AI) , 2024 is the year organizations truly began using—and deriving business value from—this new technology. In the latest McKinsey Global Survey  on AI, 65 percent of respondents report that their organizations are regularly using gen AI, nearly double the percentage from our previous survey just ten months ago. Respondents’ expectations for gen AI’s impact remain as high as they were last year , with three-quarters predicting that gen AI will lead to significant or disruptive change in their industries in the years ahead.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Alex Singla , Alexander Sukharevsky , Lareina Yee , and Michael Chui , with Bryce Hall , representing views from QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, and McKinsey Digital.

Organizations are already seeing material benefits from gen AI use, reporting both cost decreases and revenue jumps in the business units deploying the technology. The survey also provides insights into the kinds of risks presented by gen AI—most notably, inaccuracy—as well as the emerging practices of top performers to mitigate those challenges and capture value.

AI adoption surges

Interest in generative AI has also brightened the spotlight on a broader set of AI capabilities. For the past six years, AI adoption by respondents’ organizations has hovered at about 50 percent. This year, the survey finds that adoption has jumped to 72 percent (Exhibit 1). And the interest is truly global in scope. Our 2023 survey found that AI adoption did not reach 66 percent in any region; however, this year more than two-thirds of respondents in nearly every region say their organizations are using AI. 1 Organizations based in Central and South America are the exception, with 58 percent of respondents working for organizations based in Central and South America reporting AI adoption. Looking by industry, the biggest increase in adoption can be found in professional services. 2 Includes respondents working for organizations focused on human resources, legal services, management consulting, market research, R&D, tax preparation, and training.

Also, responses suggest that companies are now using AI in more parts of the business. Half of respondents say their organizations have adopted AI in two or more business functions, up from less than a third of respondents in 2023 (Exhibit 2).

Gen AI adoption is most common in the functions where it can create the most value

Most respondents now report that their organizations—and they as individuals—are using gen AI. Sixty-five percent of respondents say their organizations are regularly using gen AI in at least one business function, up from one-third last year. The average organization using gen AI is doing so in two functions, most often in marketing and sales and in product and service development—two functions in which previous research  determined that gen AI adoption could generate the most value 3 “ The economic potential of generative AI: The next productivity frontier ,” McKinsey, June 14, 2023. —as well as in IT (Exhibit 3). The biggest increase from 2023 is found in marketing and sales, where reported adoption has more than doubled. Yet across functions, only two use cases, both within marketing and sales, are reported by 15 percent or more of respondents.

Gen AI also is weaving its way into respondents’ personal lives. Compared with 2023, respondents are much more likely to be using gen AI at work and even more likely to be using gen AI both at work and in their personal lives (Exhibit 4). The survey finds upticks in gen AI use across all regions, with the largest increases in Asia–Pacific and Greater China. Respondents at the highest seniority levels, meanwhile, show larger jumps in the use of gen Al tools for work and outside of work compared with their midlevel-management peers. Looking at specific industries, respondents working in energy and materials and in professional services report the largest increase in gen AI use.

Investments in gen AI and analytical AI are beginning to create value

The latest survey also shows how different industries are budgeting for gen AI. Responses suggest that, in many industries, organizations are about equally as likely to be investing more than 5 percent of their digital budgets in gen AI as they are in nongenerative, analytical-AI solutions (Exhibit 5). Yet in most industries, larger shares of respondents report that their organizations spend more than 20 percent on analytical AI than on gen AI. Looking ahead, most respondents—67 percent—expect their organizations to invest more in AI over the next three years.

Where are those investments paying off? For the first time, our latest survey explored the value created by gen AI use by business function. The function in which the largest share of respondents report seeing cost decreases is human resources. Respondents most commonly report meaningful revenue increases (of more than 5 percent) in supply chain and inventory management (Exhibit 6). For analytical AI, respondents most often report seeing cost benefits in service operations—in line with what we found last year —as well as meaningful revenue increases from AI use in marketing and sales.

Inaccuracy: The most recognized and experienced risk of gen AI use

As businesses begin to see the benefits of gen AI, they’re also recognizing the diverse risks associated with the technology. These can range from data management risks such as data privacy, bias, or intellectual property (IP) infringement to model management risks, which tend to focus on inaccurate output or lack of explainability. A third big risk category is security and incorrect use.

Respondents to the latest survey are more likely than they were last year to say their organizations consider inaccuracy and IP infringement to be relevant to their use of gen AI, and about half continue to view cybersecurity as a risk (Exhibit 7).

Conversely, respondents are less likely than they were last year to say their organizations consider workforce and labor displacement to be relevant risks and are not increasing efforts to mitigate them.

In fact, inaccuracy— which can affect use cases across the gen AI value chain , ranging from customer journeys and summarization to coding and creative content—is the only risk that respondents are significantly more likely than last year to say their organizations are actively working to mitigate.

Some organizations have already experienced negative consequences from the use of gen AI, with 44 percent of respondents saying their organizations have experienced at least one consequence (Exhibit 8). Respondents most often report inaccuracy as a risk that has affected their organizations, followed by cybersecurity and explainability.

Our previous research has found that there are several elements of governance that can help in scaling gen AI use responsibly, yet few respondents report having these risk-related practices in place. 4 “ Implementing generative AI with speed and safety ,” McKinsey Quarterly , March 13, 2024. For example, just 18 percent say their organizations have an enterprise-wide council or board with the authority to make decisions involving responsible AI governance, and only one-third say gen AI risk awareness and risk mitigation controls are required skill sets for technical talent.

Bringing gen AI capabilities to bear

The latest survey also sought to understand how, and how quickly, organizations are deploying these new gen AI tools. We have found three archetypes for implementing gen AI solutions : takers use off-the-shelf, publicly available solutions; shapers customize those tools with proprietary data and systems; and makers develop their own foundation models from scratch. 5 “ Technology’s generational moment with generative AI: A CIO and CTO guide ,” McKinsey, July 11, 2023. Across most industries, the survey results suggest that organizations are finding off-the-shelf offerings applicable to their business needs—though many are pursuing opportunities to customize models or even develop their own (Exhibit 9). About half of reported gen AI uses within respondents’ business functions are utilizing off-the-shelf, publicly available models or tools, with little or no customization. Respondents in energy and materials, technology, and media and telecommunications are more likely to report significant customization or tuning of publicly available models or developing their own proprietary models to address specific business needs.

Respondents most often report that their organizations required one to four months from the start of a project to put gen AI into production, though the time it takes varies by business function (Exhibit 10). It also depends upon the approach for acquiring those capabilities. Not surprisingly, reported uses of highly customized or proprietary models are 1.5 times more likely than off-the-shelf, publicly available models to take five months or more to implement.

Gen AI high performers are excelling despite facing challenges

Gen AI is a new technology, and organizations are still early in the journey of pursuing its opportunities and scaling it across functions. So it’s little surprise that only a small subset of respondents (46 out of 876) report that a meaningful share of their organizations’ EBIT can be attributed to their deployment of gen AI. Still, these gen AI leaders are worth examining closely. These, after all, are the early movers, who already attribute more than 10 percent of their organizations’ EBIT to their use of gen AI. Forty-two percent of these high performers say more than 20 percent of their EBIT is attributable to their use of nongenerative, analytical AI, and they span industries and regions—though most are at organizations with less than $1 billion in annual revenue. The AI-related practices at these organizations can offer guidance to those looking to create value from gen AI adoption at their own organizations.

To start, gen AI high performers are using gen AI in more business functions—an average of three functions, while others average two. They, like other organizations, are most likely to use gen AI in marketing and sales and product or service development, but they’re much more likely than others to use gen AI solutions in risk, legal, and compliance; in strategy and corporate finance; and in supply chain and inventory management. They’re more than three times as likely as others to be using gen AI in activities ranging from processing of accounting documents and risk assessment to R&D testing and pricing and promotions. While, overall, about half of reported gen AI applications within business functions are utilizing publicly available models or tools, gen AI high performers are less likely to use those off-the-shelf options than to either implement significantly customized versions of those tools or to develop their own proprietary foundation models.

What else are these high performers doing differently? For one thing, they are paying more attention to gen-AI-related risks. Perhaps because they are further along on their journeys, they are more likely than others to say their organizations have experienced every negative consequence from gen AI we asked about, from cybersecurity and personal privacy to explainability and IP infringement. Given that, they are more likely than others to report that their organizations consider those risks, as well as regulatory compliance, environmental impacts, and political stability, to be relevant to their gen AI use, and they say they take steps to mitigate more risks than others do.

Gen AI high performers are also much more likely to say their organizations follow a set of risk-related best practices (Exhibit 11). For example, they are nearly twice as likely as others to involve the legal function and embed risk reviews early on in the development of gen AI solutions—that is, to “ shift left .” They’re also much more likely than others to employ a wide range of other best practices, from strategy-related practices to those related to scaling.

In addition to experiencing the risks of gen AI adoption, high performers have encountered other challenges that can serve as warnings to others (Exhibit 12). Seventy percent say they have experienced difficulties with data, including defining processes for data governance, developing the ability to quickly integrate data into AI models, and an insufficient amount of training data, highlighting the essential role that data play in capturing value. High performers are also more likely than others to report experiencing challenges with their operating models, such as implementing agile ways of working and effective sprint performance management.

About the research

The online survey was in the field from February 22 to March 5, 2024, and garnered responses from 1,363 participants representing the full range of regions, industries, company sizes, functional specialties, and tenures. Of those respondents, 981 said their organizations had adopted AI in at least one business function, and 878 said their organizations were regularly using gen AI in at least one function. To adjust for differences in response rates, the data are weighted by the contribution of each respondent’s nation to global GDP.

unstable diffusion —

New stable diffusion 3 release excels at ai-generated body horror, users react to mangled sd3 generations and ask, "is this release supposed to be a joke".

Benj Edwards - Jun 12, 2024 7:26 pm UTC

An AI-generated image created using Stable Diffusion 3 of a girl lying in the grass.

On Wednesday, Stability AI released weights for Stable Diffusion 3 Medium , an AI image-synthesis model that turns text prompts into AI-generated images. Its arrival has been ridiculed online, however, because it generates images of humans in a way that seems like a step backward from other state-of-the-art image-synthesis models like Midjourney or DALL-E 3 . As a result, it can churn out wild anatomically incorrect visual abominations with ease.

Further Reading

A thread on Reddit, titled, " Is this release supposed to be a joke? [SD3-2B], " details the spectacular failures of SD3 Medium at rendering humans, especially human limbs like hands and feet. Another thread, titled, " Why is SD3 so bad at generating girls lying on the grass? " shows similar issues, but for entire human bodies.

Hands have traditionally been a challenge for AI image generators due to lack of good examples in early training data sets, but more recently, several image-synthesis models seemed to have overcome the issue . In that sense, SD3 appears to be a huge step backward for the image-synthesis enthusiasts that gather on Reddit—especially compared to recent Stability releases like SD XL Turbo in November.

"It wasn't too long ago that StableDiffusion was competing with Midjourney, now it just looks like a joke in comparison. At least our datasets are safe and ethical!" wrote one Reddit user.

AI image fans are so far blaming the Stable Diffusion 3's anatomy failures on Stability's insistence on filtering out adult content (often called "NSFW" content) from the SD3 training data that teaches the model how to generate images. "Believe it or not, heavily censoring a model also gets rid of human anatomy, so... that's what happened," wrote one Reddit user in the thread.

Basically, any time a user prompt homes in on a concept that isn't represented well in the AI model's training dataset, the image-synthesis model will confabulate its best interpretation of what the user is asking for. And sometimes that can be completely terrifying.

The release of Stable Diffusion 2.0 in 2022 suffered from similar problems in depicting humans well, and AI researchers soon discovered that censoring adult content that contains nudity could severely hamper an AI model's ability to generate accurate human anatomy. At the time, Stability AI reversed course with SD 2.1 and SD XL , regaining some abilities lost by strongly filtering NSFW content.

Another issue that can occur during model pre-training is that sometimes the NSFW filter researchers use to remove adult images from the dataset is too picky, accidentally removing images that might not be offensive and depriving the model of depictions of humans in certain situations. "[SD3] works fine as long as there are no humans in the picture, I think their improved nsfw filter for filtering training data decided anything humanoid is nsfw," wrote one Redditor on the topic.

Using a free online demo of SD3 on Hugging Face, we ran prompts and saw similar results to those being reported by others. For example, the prompt "a man showing his hands" returned an image of a man holding up two giant-sized backward hands, although each hand at least had five fingers.

Stability's troubles run deep

Stability announced Stable Diffusion 3 in February, and the company has planned to make it available in various model sizes. Today's release is for the "Medium" version, which is a 2 billion-parameter model. In addition to the weights being available on Hugging Face , they are also available for experimentation through the company's Stability Platform . The weights are available for download and use for free under a non-commercial license only.

Soon after its February announcement, delays in releasing the SD3 model weights inspired rumors that the release was being held back due to technical issues or mismanagement. Stability AI as a company fell into a tailspin recently with the resignation of its founder and CEO, Emad Mostaque, in March and then a series of layoffs . Just prior to that, three key engineers—Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann, and Dominik Lorenz— left the company . And its troubles go back even further, with news of the company's dire financial position lingering since 2023.

To some Stable Diffusion fans, the failures with Stable Diffusion 3 Medium are a visual manifestation of the company's mismanagement—and an obvious sign of things falling apart. Although the company has not filed for bankruptcy, some users made dark jokes about the possibility after seeing SD3 Medium:

"I guess now they can go bankrupt in a safe and ethically [sic] way, after all."

Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark downplay impact of controversial flagrant foul

latest presentation topics technical

The budding Angel Reese - Caitlin Clark rivalry added another chapter on Sunday when Reese was assessed with a flagrant foul for hitting Clark in the head on a drive to the basket.

Officials originally called a common foul on Reese, but upgraded it to a Flagrant 1 after a video review.

After the game, a 91-83 win for Clark and the Indiana Fever over the Chicago Sky, Reese defended her actions, calling it "a basketball play."

"I can't control the refs. They affected the game a lot tonight," she said. "I'm always going for the ball. But y'all going to play that clip 20 times before Monday."

Caitlin Clark is fouled while driving to the basket pic.twitter.com/U9TvoFUoD3 — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) June 16, 2024

Clark agreed with Reese, saying, "It's just part of basketball ... Trying to make a play on the ball, get the block. I mean, it happens."

Reese, the WNBA’s top offensive rebounder, was in foul trouble for a good part of the game and had to sit for a long stretch in the third quarter.

She was also hit with a delay-of-game warning at one point in the fourth quarter after a prolonged argument with officials.

"Going back and looking at the film, I've seen a lot of calls that weren't made," Reese said , before possibly adding more fuel to the fire.

"I guess some people got a special whistle."

The two players and their teams meet again next Sunday for their third matchup of the season − this time in Chicago. Both of the previous games have featured national TV audiences and sellout crowds of over 17,000 at Indianapolis' Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
