However, the content of most 4th grade curricula pushes students to think, analyze, and learn in more sophisticated and structured ways than they did in the “lower” grades.

In 4th grade, students learn how to deeply think about and make connections in new material, and grasp more complex concepts across all subjects. They also write with clarity, flow, and structure similar to that of traditional essays. Fourth graders are encouraged to be more independent in how they learn, and depend less on their teacher's guidance. They research, plan, and revise their work more by themselves — setting the foundation to be lifelong, self-starting learners.

Reading in 4th Grade

Much of the 4th grade reading curriculum teaches students how to analyze the books they read. Rather than just understand the plot and information given in a text, students are encouraged to think about the messages and how they relate to their own lives. They also compare texts to each other and make connections both within one text and across multiple texts.

In short, 4th graders begin to learn how to think and talk about a text to find deeper meanings and messages. This is done both with texts students read independently and those read by the whole class or smaller groups of students. Teachers may often use a class read-aloud to show students strategies for thinking about and analyzing what they read, encouraging them to do this in their own reading. Students also do this as they write in more detail about the texts they read.

To build reading skills, your 4th grader :

Uses specific examples from the text to explain characters’ motivations, main events, central themes, or ideas about a text.
Uses the context of a text to determine the meaning of a word.
Understands and can explain the differences between narrative prose, drama, and poetry.
Identifies and refers to the different parts of poems and plays, such as verses, settings, and characters.
Interprets and connects information from illustrations, graphs, charts, or other sources related to the text.
Identifies, compares, and contrasts different perspectives from which texts are written (for example, first and third person).
Compares and contrasts the way different texts address the same issue, theme, or topic.
Makes connections between people, events, or important ideas in a text.
Uses previous knowledge to read unfamiliar multi-syllable words.
Reads grade-level texts with accurate comprehension, pacing, and expression.

Fourth Grade Reading Activities

Read and Research Together : Read the same book as your child independently, together, or a combination of both. Talk about the book as you read it, reviewing main ideas and plots and expressing your opinions. Then read an additional book or books on the same subject and compare and contrast how they dealt with the same issue.

Compare Perspectives : Read two texts — one written in first person and one in third person — about the same event. Talk with your child about the differences and why they thinks these differences exist. Or, try it yourself! After sharing an experience with your child, each of you can write about it from your own perspective. Talk about the differences between what you wrote to gain a better understanding of perspective.

Read magazine and newspaper articles. Focus on the illustrations, graphs, or charts. Point out to your child what they show, ask them to help you interpret them, and discuss how they help explain or elaborate on the text.

Writing in 4th Grade

Much of the 4th grade writing curriculum focuses on developing writing that has clarity and structure, and that uses reasons, facts, and details to support and strengthen arguments. Fourth graders are taught to organize their writing, ensure that it flows well, and group together related components. As students learn to think more deeply about concepts they are taught, they are encouraged to write in deeper ways as well. They do this by going beyond simply stating the facts — they express ideas, make connections, and provide details and emotions when appropriate.

To build writing skills, your 4th grader :

Writes opinion pieces that express a point of view; have an introduction, a conclusion, reasons, and facts to support the opinion; and group together related ideas.
Writes informative/explanatory pieces that present information on a topic, use facts and details, and group together related topics; provides introductions and conclusions in these pieces.
Writes narrative pieces that use specific details, descriptions, and dialogue to convey a real event; includes an introduction and conclusion in each piece.
Plans, revises, and edits their writing.
Uses technology to publish, research, and communicate with others under the proper guidance of an adult or teacher.
Types with a beginner’s accuracy and ability (for example, types one page of text within one sitting).
Completes research projects by taking notes, organizing them, and presenting them; lists the texts and resources used.
Writes for both long (over weeks) and shorter (one sitting or a couple of days) periods of time.

Fourth Grade Writing Activities

Ask Why : When your child expresses their opinion about something, ask them why they think that or how they know it is true. This will help them learn to support their opinion with reasons and/or facts. Do the same when you express your opinion or ideas about something.

Email with your Child : Set up an email account for your child and write emails describing your days to each other. Include details, conversations, thoughts, and emotions you had. This can be done in addition to generally encouraging (and supervising) your child’s use of technology — helping them use it for research, writing, and communicating with others. As always, be cautious of your child’s technology use by monitoring and supervising how much it is used and with whom they communicate.

Practice Note Taking : When you and your child go somewhere like a museum or a new city, pretend to be reporters and take notes (give them a journal they'll love to take notes in, like the Klutz: Decorate This Journal ). Later on, use those notes to describe what you learned. You can even relay your “reports” like a newscaster would.

Why reading by fourth grade matters for student success

Young Readers Day , celebrated on the second Tuesday of November each year, is a day to experience the joy of reading with children and to raise awareness for the educational challenges that exist in the US for early elementary students.

The implications for students reading below grade level by fourth grade are daunting. In a nation where far too many elementary school children are reading below grade level, Young Readers Day provides an outlet to bring these educational barriers to the forefront of our conversations.

Studies have shown that children who cannot read at grade level by the start of fourth grade are four times less likely to graduate on time than their grade-level peers — a startling statistic that shows the weight that early education carries for a child’s future success.

Reading by fourth grade is critical for student success

Students usually spend grades one through three learning the alphabet, letter sounds, word combinations, and other basic reading skills. However, once students enter fourth grade, their focus shifts from learning to read to reading to learn . And the basic reading skills become vital for continued learning in other subjects, like history, math, and science. Without these foundational skills, students are unable to keep up with their peers, and continue to fall farther and farther behind.

For example, say Billy reaches fourth grade and is still working on sounding out words — not having mastered the skills of reading comprehension yet. During his math lesson, Billy’s teacher outlines a word problem: “Three-toed sloths have four legs. How many toes would 25 sloths have?” Billy feels immediately defeated because he can’t get beyond comprehension of the sentence to begin to solve the math problem. He then misses out on learning the math principles associated with this problem, while his peers gain an understanding of the subject matter.

The opportunity gap continues to widen

Researchers refer to the “ Matthew Effect ” to explain the effect when kids like Billy enter fourth grade reading at a lower grade level, and fall even further behind as the year progresses.

In educational settings, the Matthew Effect can be used to describe how students who possess strong foundational reading skills will continue to build upon that foundation and will learn at a fast rate. For struggling readers, however, basic reading skills become just one of many skills they have not yet mastered. This effect also gives rise to an skill gap between students who have mastered foundational skills and those who have not.

Adding to the effect, students who fall behind in reading often experience a drop in self confidence, making it even more difficult to keep practicing their skills. A struggling reader may not be as confident in decoding meaning and may become frustrated when he or she cannot comprehend the same material as a fellow classmate can. This could then lead to resistance to further learning and participation in school, thus amplifying the problem.

In a world full of digital distraction and scheduled enrichment, what can parents and educators do to promote the timeless pleasure of reading a book for fun?

Harvard Graduate School of Education faculty members Joe Blatt , Nonie Lesaux , and Catherine Snow distilled a comprehensive body of literacy research into a short guidebook titled Encouraging Your Child to Read . Here are their age-appropriate suggestions:

Your Baby (birth–18 months)

What to know:

Babies learn language while being held and cared for by adults who repeat words to them; tell them stories; laugh and smile with them; and respond to their noises, smiles, and burps.
When you read to your baby, she’s learning. Plus, she begins to connect reading with what she loves most — being with you!

How to help:

Talk to your baby! Repeat nursery rhymes, sing songs, play peek-a-boo, and respond to her needs with soothing words.
Take advantage of everyday moments to talk about the world around you. Tell her stories while she is being changed, in the bath, in her stroller, or being held. She needs to hear your voice and learn about things that she sees.
Read board books with faces, animals, and objects that you can talk about with your baby, then add lift-the-flap books when reading with your 1-year-old.
When talking to your child, use the language(s) that are most comfortable for you, so that she hears lots of different words and ideas.

Your Toddler (18 months–3 years)

Listen to your child talk and encourage her to say more. Ask her questions, show interest in what she says, and help her learn new words and ideas.
When you are with your child, limit distractions like phone calls and television. Instead, talk, read, and play together. Consider borrowing books from the library.
Make books a part of the daily routine. Special reading time might be before bed, during a meal, or while you are riding the bus.
Give your child paper and crayons so she can “write.” Ask her to explain what is happening in her picture or story. Help her think of more ideas to add.
At 2 years, can say 250–350 words
At 3 years, can say 800–1000 words
Says common rhymes, imitates the tone and sounds of adults speaking, and asks to be read to
Enjoys listening to predictable, familiar books and joins in when it is time to say a repeated phrase in the story

Your Toddler/Preschooler (3–5 years)

Learning lots of words from birth helps to make preschoolers readers for life.
Children become “writers” before they learn to write. Children’s scribbles, pictures, and attempts at writing alphabet letters are all important beginnings to strong literacy skills.
When reading together, encourage your child to talk. Have her “pretend read” the parts she has memorized. Ask her questions and encourage her to say more. Eventually, she might tell more of the story than you do!
Point out words on signs and talk about the letters and sounds. Ask your child to find letters she knows on menus or street signs.
Link the books you read to people, places, and things your child knows or sees when you’re out.
Play with words and sounds by singing, reading, and making up rhymes together. Call attention to words that have similar sounds (“Dad and dance both start with the same sound, d-d-d-d dad, d-d-d-d dance!”)
Have your child tell you stories, and write down what she says. Ask questions that will help her complete the story. Then, read the story you wrote together.
Comfortably uses sentences, plays with words, and learns from conversations and books that are read aloud
Recognizes familiar letters and words such as her name — and attempts to write them
Identifies words that rhyme or have the same beginning sound
Holds a book right-side-up, turns the pages, and understands that pages are read from left to right and from top to bottom

Your Early Elementary Student (grades K–2)

Positive reading experiences encourage more reading. The more children read, the better they will read.
Early readers can build their confidence and abilities by rereading books they are very familiar with. Repetition is good!
Reading and talking about nonfiction — not just storybooks — helps younger children learn information and skills that they need for academic success in upper grades.
Read and reread your child’s favorite books — electronic or print — and, eventually, she will be able to read them to you.
Listen to your child read and tell you stories. Then, have a conversation about them.
Play board games and card games and talk about what’s happening as you play.
Limit and monitor your child’s computer and television time. During screen time, help choose programs that will both interest her and build knowledge. Ask what she has learned, and find books on these subjects at the local library.
Expose your child to new things and information by taking her to a museum, the zoo, or a different neighborhood. Encourage her to talk about what she sees.
At 5 years, can say 3000–5000 words, speaks using complex and compound sentences, and starts to match letters with sounds.
At 6 years, starts to read words on the page and make predictions while reading, using knowledge, pictures, and text.
At 7 years, starts to read words automatically, and expands knowledge by listening to and reading books

Your Upper Elementary Student (grades 3–5)

The words we use in conversation are different from the words we see in books. Students need to understand this academic language in order to succeed in school.
Starting in grade 4, children are expected to “read to learn” — to gain information from books independently.
Children need encouragement, praise, and patience, especially when they are struggling in school.
Hang maps or other word-filled posters. Hang her schoolwork to show how proud you are and emphasize the importance of working hard at school.
Challenge your child by reading aloud books or stories from the newspaper — electronic or print — that she cannot read on her own and by introducing her to new ideas and topics.
Keep what your child enjoys reading around the house. Many children enjoy kid-friendly magazines that you can find at your library or order by mail.
Talk to your child’s teacher. Learn about classroom work and how you can help at home.
At 8 years, reads chapter books and is now learning an estimated 3,000 words per year
At 9 years, can read aloud and silently, and understand what is read
At 10 years, begins to identify the themes in a text

Your Young Teen (grades 6-9)

Many children lose interest in reading during middle school. Finding reading material every day that captures their interest can help them continue to build knowledge and skills.
Vocabulary growth is critical throughout middle school to prepare for understanding high school textbooks.
Many children need extra support as reading requirements increase during these years.
Talk with your child about what is in the news, or what is happening at your workplace or at her school. Like many teens, she values privacy, but appreciates knowing that you are there for her.
Put word games, trivia challenges, or light reading materials around the home where she will see them and hopefully pick them up to read.
Encourage good study habits, like setting goals, completing assignments on time, and asking for help from a teacher when needed. Establish a space at home for homework.
Get your child involved in activities she enjoys such as sports, volunteering, music, or book clubs. These activities help her explore interests and keep her connected to school.
If your older teen has trouble with comprehension, read it yourself and discuss it with her, then encourage her to try again.

By cultivating a fast reading habit, they can absorb more information and become skilled readers later in life. Children should develop a habit of reading on a variety of subjects, so they have broad knowledge as they go through higher grades. Eventually, they will see that there will always be more books to read and more friends to make! Books are the kind of companions who never grow old and can guide us in life’s journey.

Important points in the lesson itself

The basic design of this lesson supports ELLs with opportunities to unpack an example of the work they are expected to complete during the remainder of the unit. They are also empowered to use a color-coding system that will help them understand essay structure using visual prompts.
ELLs may find it challenging to absorb an abundance of information and terminology about essay structure. Remind students that this structure is an expanded version of the paragraph structure they completed in prior lessons. Think aloud each part while analyzing the model essay in order to clarify the purpose of each component of the structure. Reassure students that even if they do not understand everything today, they will have plenty of opportunities to work with the concepts throughout the unit and the year.
In Work Time A, ELLs are invited to participate in an optional Language Dive. This conversation guides them through expanding the meaning of the focus statement in the model literary essay. It also provides students with further practice using the language structure from the model literary essay focus statement. Students may draw on this sentence when writing their informative essays later in the unit. A consistent Language Dive routine is critical in helping all students learn how to decipher compelling sentences and write their own. In addition, Language Dive conversations hasten overall English language development for ELLs. Preview the Language Dive Guide and consider how to invite conversation among students to address the questions and goals suggested under each sentence strip chunk (see supporting materials). Select from the questions and goals provided to best meet your students' needs. Consider providing students with a Language Dive log inside a folder to track Language Dive sentences and structures and collate Language Dive note-catchers.

Levels of support

For lighter support:

During the Language Dive, challenge students to generate questions about the sentence before asking the prepared questions. Example: "What questions can we ask about this sentence? Let's see if we can answer them together." (What does it mean to find inspiration?)

For heavier support:

Create a puzzle of the model literary essay using index cards. Paste each paragraph on a different index card. Use colored index cards according to the established Painted Essay colors. Challenge students to put the paragraph together in the correct order without looking at their papers.
Multiple Means of Representation (MMR): In Work Time A, students analyze a model essay in preparation to write their own essay. Help students engage with the model essay in multiple ways. Color-code the model on display with the same colors that the students use during the Painted Essay exercise.
Multiple Means of Action and Expression (MMAE): In the basic structure of this lesson, students get multiple representation cues with the color-coding provided by the Painted EssayO template. However, some students may find covering the entire essay in one lesson overwhelming. Consider chunking the explicit instruction for each part of the essay into multiple lessons to provide time for students to comprehend new information.
Multiple Means of Engagement (MME): This lesson continues work that students will use to write an informational essay on their expert group's poet. Build engagement for the informational essay by telling students that they get to become experts about a specific poet. Then they will be able to teach others all about the poet and demonstrate their knowledge.

Effective Teaching of Reading in Education Essay

Effective teaching of reading is an important aspect as reading does not come as naturally as speaking. Children do not learn how to read just by being exposed to reading materials, but rather, for them to learn this important skill, they ought to be taught explicitly and systematically.

To start with, it is important to establish the main aim of teaching reading as there are several reasons why a learner can read. For instance, one can read in order to develop his/her knowledge of the language of instruction or for fun. An individual may also read for the purpose of gathering information or for confirming the authenticity of the knowledge at hand or even to critically assess someone’s thoughts or style of writing.

Establishing the intention of reading affects the most effective method of comprehension reading. For instance, in case a person is reading a particular poem for the purpose of gratification, he/she is only required to make out the words used by the poet and the manner in which they are presented and has no need to classify the subject of the poem.

On the other hand, in case an individual uses a scientific article with the aim of supporting a certain outlook, one requires to have been exposed to the terminologies being used. He/she should also comprehend the specific information as well as the cause-effect cycle of the information presented. This encompasses the main objective of teaching reading to learners in our learning institutions.

In the past, my main failure in teaching reading was mainly attributed to my presumption of the aim of learning how to read in a language, which I viewed as merely to get the content written in a given lingo. During that time, I mainly restricted teaching reading to literary texts that indicated a deep affiliation to culture.

However, this approach was wrong because it presupposed that students learn to read in a particular language only through learning its terminologies, words and sentence structures, but not by actually reading it, which ignores the aspect of communicative competence.

However, as a result of learning the importance of communicative approach and applying it in the teaching of reading, I have had a better perception of the role of reading as well as the types of texts to be applied in teaching reading in any given language, as a result of which I have succeeded in this endeavor.

When a teacher’s main objective of teaching reading encompasses communicative competence, diverse reading materials such as newspapers, comprehension text books as well as internet should be used. This is because exposing the learners to diverse reading materials develops their communicative competence tremendously. For this reason, we cannot separate instruction in reading from reading practice at any one time.

As an instructor of reading skills, I plan to lay out some comprehension strategies that my learners will employ in order to reap maximum benefits from any given texts in future. This way, the learners will learn to become dynamic and focused readers who can manage reading comprehension on their own.

The strategies include instruction on comprehension monitoring where I will teach the learners on how to be aware of what they understand and make out whatever they do not comprehend as well as employ suitable means of solving comprehension problems. In addition,

I will expose the learners to metacognition skills which will require them to have control over their reading and establish the purpose of reading prior to the reading process, while establishing the hurdles they encounter in understanding a particular comprehension. Furthermore, I will teach the learners on how to make use of semantic as well as graphic organizers for effective understanding.

These include diagrams as well as subject words that are crucial in understanding any comprehension. Other important aspects that I plan to teach include formulating and answering comprehension questions, elaborating the structure of the story as well as summarizing the main components of a given comprehension.

In conclusion, even though a teacher is crucial in instructing effective comprehension skills, the benefits can only be achieved through cooperative learning. Learners should work hand in hand with each other in order to comprehend texts. Besides, they should also employ the given strategies of comprehension reading. We as the instructors should assist the learners to work in groups and model the reading strategies to them.
