Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most. 

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need 

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

7 ways to create meaningful English homework. Tips for teachers, parents and students

Homework. The bane of student life everywhere. And teachers too! Won’t someone please think of the teachers?

It has been one of the hottest debates among progressives and traditionalists in education circles for many years now; is homework help or a hindrance?

Millions of student hours per year are wasted on busy work, which adds little to student learning. But that doesn’t mean that the judicious use of homework can’t add greatly to student learning, particularly in an area as complex as literacy.

Regarding reading and writing homework, there are good points to be made on both sides. But, as with many hot-button issues, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle.

In this article, we will look at what we need to consider when we set homework to ensure it provides value to our students’ learning. We will look at what to do, what not to do, and just how much of it to do.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 1: Bin the Busy Work!

Ask your average student what their pet peeve is regarding their current station in life, and more often than not, homework will be mentioned in the reply. It is just as much a fixture in the life of a student as an oven is in the life of a baker. Unfortunately, as many students robotically complete their homework as teachers that robotically set the tasks. And here lies our first problem – busy work!

Homework should ALWAYS be focused. It should be carefully designed and purposeful. Without clear objectives built-in, the homework serves little to no pedagogical purpose. It is more likely to be a waste of the student’s time and the time of the teacher who is doomed to mark it.

The first rule of Homework Club is Bin the Busy Work!

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 2: Make The Homework Fit for Purpose

It may seem obvious, but homework must be suited to the ability of the student. How often have diligent students pulled their hair out struggling over a problem all night, press-ganging parents into the effort, only to be soundly trounced by a problem Einstein himself would need his morning coffee before attempting.

Avoid setting homework that will stretch the student to the elastic limits of their abilities. We don’t want anyone ‘snapping’ here. The material chosen for reading or writing homework should, however, challenge the student to some degree. Just as with strength training, some resistance is required to build ‘muscle’ here.

As in Rule #1 above, homework should be carefully designed to achieve a certain objective. But, one size most certainly doesn’t fit all. Be sure to differentiate homework appropriately for the different abilities of different students. Often, you won’t need to set different tasks, a slight tweak in the instructions given will be enough to make it suitable for the various ability levels.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 3: Set Time Limits

We all have both good days and bad days, and all sorts of days in between. Regardless of what sort of day you had, one thing is for sure, there were 24 hours in it. One of the more difficult things as a teacher, especially in a school with a vague homework policy, is just how much homework to set. The answer is, of course, it depends , and while time is certainly an imperfect means of gauging this, it at least provides some guidelines.

Just how much time depends on quite a few things. The time of year, for example. If exams are ongoing, you may want to avoid heaping extra pressure on your students. Perhaps too, your school has a very prescriptive homework policy that restricts your flexibility in terms of how much time you can set for homework tasks.

All that aside, the general wisdom on setting homework is that it should start at around 10 minutes for grade 1 and gradually increase by around ten minutes per grade, up to a maximum of 2 hours per day for the oldest students.

Like most things in teaching, however, this is more of an art than a cold, hard science. Pay attention to your students and how they are bearing up under the workload. Your priority here should always be to maximize the learning done in the classroom, so don’t overdo it.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 4: Give Timely Feedback

For feedback to be useful, it must be timely. If a student has spent hours composing an essay; researching their material, drafting an outline, organising their structure, writing and rewriting to submit their finished piece only to be told 4 weeks later that the third paragraph lacks purpose, the third paragraph will not be the only thing that lacks purpose.

If feedback is to be of any value, you must strike while the mental forge is still hot. Our students’ lives are most likely busy and interesting. Often their focus will be transient, if not downright fickle. If you want your feedback to stick – it must be delivered while the smoke still hangs in the air.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 5: Get Creative with the Tasks

Many of our students hate homework. Perhaps ‘despise’ would be a better word. And is it any wonder? Especially when it comes to reading and writing. Learning to read and write well requires lots of practice, and a certain amount of repetition is inescapable. But, I would argue, there should be no reason for homework to be boring. There isn’t a more wondrous subject in the world than literacy, after all!

Reading and writing are very broad areas of learning. Ample opportunities are afforded to allow you to come up with engaging and creative ways for your students to reinforce their learning. You just need to begin with your learning objective and reverse engineer unique ways to get there.

Let’s take instruction writing as an example. Say you have already taught the key criteria of instruction writing: a title, a resource list, some diagrams with captions, bullet or numbered points, use of transition words and imperatives etc. You now want the students to consolidate their understanding of the genre by writing their own set of instructions at home, but how to do it in an interesting fashion?

Well, let’s brainstorm and see if we can’t make things a little more interesting for our students. Recipes are a type of instruction writing. You could set them the task of writing a recipe for their favorite sandwich, but that’s kind of, well, lame!

How about writing a recipe for the most disgusting sandwich in the world? Yes, now that’s much better. Maybe they could word process it too and include Creative Commons images to support the text, Or, they could even make a script and record a video instructional, sharpening up their video-editing skills along the way.

Regardless of which of these methods you choose, your students would still be fulfilling the original objective of reinforcing their understanding of the criteria of the genre.

Bear in mind, however, you should not set homework that requires students to use resources that they don’t have access to, so be sure to give this due consideration when getting creative with your homework tasks.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 6: Leverage Interest

“ You can bring a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink ”, as the old saying goes – and it certainly applies to homework.

This rule relies heavily on the relationship you build with your students over time. Allied to the point above, there are a million different ways to teach an objective, but try to engineer activities that leverage the specific interests of your students.

If you are setting a homework task to reinforce reading comprehension skills, for example, are there opportunities for you to select, or allow your students to select, material that they are interested in?

The same applies when selecting topics for writing. Where student interest is engaged, learning often becomes effortless.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK TIP 7: Give Homework At The Start of the Lesson

It is general practice to give homework at the end of the lesson. By then, you will have introduced a lesson objective, worked through some examples during class, and now you can set homework for the students to further consolidate their understanding at home.

It makes sense, right? Well, yes, but there is another option.

Sharing the homework task with your students at the start of class may, at times, be preferable. There are several benefits to this. Often, at the end of class, our students are worn out. They are like greyhounds at the starting gate, raring to go home, to the next class, or for lunch. The last place their attention is is on more of the topic they have just been working on. Setting homework at the start of the class avoids the feeling like you are trying to herd cats at the end of class.

Another strong benefit to setting the homework at the start of the class is that it focuses the students on specific learning goals for the lesson to come. Students will be motivated to engage more with their learning as it will make their homework much easier to do that evening. Give it a go with your class and see!

The Takeaways

Homework should be used as a means of consolidating learning done in the classroom. Tasks should be focused and offer opportunities for students to improve their understanding of important concepts or develop specific skills.

Homework should be designed in such a way that it is manageable by students. It should not be beyond the limits of their abilities and time limits should be set to prevent student frustration from boiling over if they struggle to complete it.

Feedback needs to be given in a timely fashion for it to serve any useful purpose. This means that consideration must be given to your workload when assigning homework. Will you have enough time to mark the students’ work and provide the necessary feedback in a timely manner?

If not, reconsider the tasks you are setting. Remember, you may also find value in peer assessment activities too.

Also, try setting homework at the start of class to motivate student participation in the lesson to come. And, you’ll avoid that tussle at lesson’s end as the students rush for the door!

Literacy is such a fascinating subject area that there will always be room to create interesting homework tasks. You just require a little space to allow your imagination to run freely. The personal interests of your students can provide a great starting point for the creation of engaging and fun homework tasks.

Remember too, there’s an upper limit to how much homework you should set, and it may not always be necessary to set homework. When you do set homework, set it judiciously, and you will undoubtedly add to the learning experience of your students.

FX’s gripping spy thriller, The Veil , reached a tragic conclusion in its Season 1 finale on May 28. If you’ve watched Episode 6, “The Cottage,” then you likely want to learn more about The Veil ’s ending and whether there will be a Season 2 on Hulu . Here’s what to know.

From Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight, The Veil is FX’s spy thriller series about different spy agencies across the world trying to unravel the details of a suspected terrorist plot and stop it before it happens. At the forefront is skilled British M16 agent Imogen Salter (played by Emmy-winning actress Elisabeth Moss), who has been tasked to locate and befriend a woman in a refugee camp on the Syrian and Turkish border.

The woman is named Adilah (Yumna Marwan), and she is suspected to be the mastermind behind the alleged terrorist plot. Imogen offers to help Adilah when she is under guard after being attacked by other refugees. As Imogen gets close to discovering Adilah’s true identity, the mission turns into a deadly game of who is telling the truth and who is lying across Istanbul, Paris, and London. “One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost,” the show’s logline reads.

There are six episodes in the action-packed thriller. The first two episodes of The Veil premiered on April 30, while the remaining were released weekly on Tuesdays until May 28. If you finished the final episode, here’s what to know about a second season of the Hulu hit and how it could pick up after the thrilling finale.

In Episode 6, “The Cottage,” Imogen is forced to see her ex-lover and former mentor, Michael Althorp (James Purefoy), who has only been seen in flashbacks until now. This encounter is her only hope of obtaining the forged passports necessary to reunite Adilah with her daughter, Yasmina.

During the visit, Michael engages in mind games with Imogen’s, and it’s revealed that he is the father of her late child. Viewers also discover that Michael is working with the Russians, just like Imogen’s deceased father, who was assassinated for being a double agent.

Imogen seduces her father’s protégé and leads him to the bedroom, where they almost kill each other. Fortunately, French DGHSE agent Malik (Dali Benssalah) arrives just in time and kills Michael.

When Imogen flees with Adilah, Michael’s chauffeur Patrick (Brian Milliagn) shoots and kills Adilah. A heartbroken Imogen discovers that Adilah had written the name of the targeted U.S. ship, Provadia, on the windshield before she died.

Will There Be A The Veil Season 2?

FX has not renewed The Veil for a second season. Although the show was billed as a limited series, Moss said she would return to play her character in a “heartbeat.”

“First of all, Steven’s writing is just so delicious to do. I have loved working with FX. Fargo and FX were the reason why I did The Handmaid’s Tale, ” the actress revealed to Collider . “It’s the reason I thought, ‘Oh, there’s this thing after Mad Men that’s continuing to happen in television and in streaming.’ I have loved working with them.”

If renewed, the second season of The Veil will likely pick up after the Adilah’s death and the devastating events in the Season 1 finale. Moss told Variety that she doesn’t know if her character “will recover from this.”

“It shouldn’t have happened. I think she truly believed she was going to save Adilah and reunite her with her daughter, and it is all she wants in the world. So to lose her and fail in that regard, I don’t think you come back from that,” she explained.

The next season of The Veil has a chance to “drop her into different locations, give her another mission, have her play somebody else, and give her another name,” Moss told Collider.

“We’ve just scratched the surface. There’s no other way for me to say it. She’s so interesting and complicated and good at what she does,” she added. “It just seems like it’s too fun not to think about.”

Erik ten Hag’s strange day at Wembley: an FA Cup trophy, no socks and no sacking… for now

The sun was shining as Erik ten Hag walked into the bowels of Wembley Stadium just before 1.30pm on Saturday, but he could not escape the cloud of uncertainty that followed him as questions over his future dominated the build-up to yesterday’s FA Cup final.

Several hours later, the Manchester United manager walked out of the stadium an FA Cup winner, his United side having beaten and outsmarted the imperious Manchester City , 2-1.

This final was billed as his final hurrah, in a Paul Smith-designed club suit, before INEOS, United’s new co-owners who had been speaking to his potential replacements all week, sacked him at the end of his second season.

But on a remarkable day in north-west London — where City, the newly-crowned four-in-a-row Premier League champions, failed to lay a glove on United until the game’s final 10 minutes — Ten Hag ensured he was the one having the last laugh.

For all the scrutiny he has faced in recent weeks, which has involved answering questions on whether he thinks he will be fired, this was his day, and it was fitting that Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo , two academy graduates he has helped bring through to become first-team regulars this season, were the United names on the scoresheet.

If this is to be Ten Hag’s final match, then surely the sight of Mainoo and Garnacho lifting the FA Cup in front of the Royal Box will be his legacy, because they are undeniably the future of this team.

Ten Hag’s day started with the publication of an interview he conducted with Dutch magazine Voetbal International on Friday, May 17, in which he spoke at length about United’s difficult 2023-24 season, but the key point within it was him saying that INEOS “want to change everything but want to build with me” .

Despite those comments, INEOS had been speaking to several managers in the build-up to the final and Ten Hag was unable to avoid the spotlight, especially as a report was published on the eve of the game that said United had decided to sack him and that a win wouldn’t change their mind.

United left their team hotel, the Marriott in the Maida Vale district of north-west London, a short drive south of the stadium, and arrived at Wembley at around 1.25pm, with Ten Hag looking confident and relaxed, highlighted by the 54-year-old engaging with the group of young mascots on his way to the dressing room.

As kick-off moved closer, Ten Hag completed his obligatory pre-match interviews and, when asked about his future, made clear that he was not thinking about that, saying his “focus” was on the match.

Ten Hag had to make a late change to his matchday squad as Casemiro , who, United say, arrived at Wembley with a slight muscle issue, felt tightness in the dressing room and was unable to play. This came no more than 24 hours after The Athletic revealed he had been dropped to the bench for the final.

He replaced the Brazilian with defender Willy Kambwala , saying Casemiro “is not 100 per cent” and that they need a “strong defence” in the “space around Phil Foden ”.

The former Ajax manager did not emerge again until leading United out of the tunnel in the moments before kick-off, greeting Prince William, as the future King of England shook hands with both sets of players.

He took a momentary seat in the dugout, but was quick to his feet once the whistle to begin play had been blown. He stood there on the touchline, hands in pockets, almost motionless for the first 20 minutes, the spring sun beating down on him — and his sockless ankles, which he had on display above Karl Lagerfeld trainers.

There was a stroke of the chin as Garnacho tested City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega early on and a swig of water as he tried to cool down in the heat. His first sign of frustration came when he approached the fourth official after City were awarded a free kick.

Following that frenetic start, he took a seat for the first time since kick-off. And then as Garnacho latched onto a rare defensive error by City to open the scoring on the half-hour, there was the first sign of real emotion; Ten Hag, unable to hide his delight, clenched his fists, smiling, and punched the air.  

His game plan of catching City on the break was working, and he knew it. Ten Hag was at his most confident when Mainoo doubled the lead nine minutes later. Again, he launched his arms into the air to celebrate.

There was another sip of water to calm the excitement before quickly engaging with his players, instructing them to keep going.

And as referee Andy Madley blew the whistle for half-time, it was Ten Hag who showed a bit of pace; immediately turning and jogging down the tunnel to ensure he was in the dressing room ready for his team to enter.

The second half will have made for uncomfortable viewing for Ten Hag, with City dominating possession and threatening to score. But still, he stood there, switching from hands in pockets to arms crossed, motionless. Occasionally, he would take a few steps to the side to follow the ball’s direction up and down the pitch.

Even when Erling Haaland ’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar 10 minutes into the half, there was no reaction. He wasn’t even watching when Julian Alvarez came agonisingly close to beating Andre Onana just past the hour.

But as Jeremy Doku wheeled away to celebrate a goal with three minutes of the 90 to play, Ten Hag dipped his head, expecting City to start an onslaught on Onana’s net… but it didn’t come.

Seven long minutes passed in stoppage time, and before he knew it Ten Hag, who had taken a few steps onto the pitch, was being lifted into the air by jubilant United centre-back Lisandro Martinez .

He had just guided United to an FA Cup final win and a player he was so desperate to bring with him from Ajax two years ago was the first to celebrate with him. Ten Hag, whether it was relief or pure joy, looked a combination of delighted and exhausted.  

A weight had been lifted, and as he went to shake hands with Pep Guardiola, the City manager, the magnitude of what he had just achieved was beginning to settle in.

There was a warm moment with long-term injury absentee Luke Shaw , who embraced Ten Hag and spent a couple of minutes in his company, and multiple hugs from other players — including from goalscorers Mainoo and Garnacho at the same time.

And as United were about to make their way up to the Royal Box to receive the trophy, Ten Hag’s face was shown on the stadium’s big screens. Do United fans still want him to be their manager? The huge ovation he received suggested they just might.

Ten Hag shook the hands of City executives, received his winner’s medal and then continued along the walkway where he was greeted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the man ultimately deciding his fate, and Avram Glazer, whose family are still the club’s majority owners.

The FA Cup was first hoisted into the air by United captain Bruno Fernandes before, player by player, it eventually got to Ten Hag at the end of the line.

Martinez, who had been the first player to congratulate him, peered forward, smiled and watched the United manager lift the FA Cup, his second United trophy after the Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle United last season. But it was fellow defender Jonny Evans who instructed Ten Hag to bask in his moment, with midfielder Scott McTominay equally enthusiastic.

With the trophy celebrations completed, Ten Hag returned to reality.

And while Ratcliffe was refusing to answer questions about his future, the manager himself faced the same line of questioning from the media post-match. He once again brushed off questions about his future, saying he has not been informed that he will be sacked and that he plans on being at Old Trafford again next season.

The club will now conduct a thorough post-season review, evaluating the Dutchman’s performance. There will be a full assessment before a final decision on whether to keep him or make a change .

When asked by the BBC if this was his last game with United, Ten Hag replied: “I don’t know. But the only thing I’m doing is preparing my team, developing my team, progressing my team and individual players, because this is a project for me.

“When I came in (at the start of last season), I can say it was a mess. We are now better. But we are, by far, not where we want to be.

“Football is about winning trophies. I want to play the best football, I want to play dynamic football, attacking football. But in the end, you have to win games and win trophies. That’s the mentality we brought in. We had only one opportunity (for a trophy this season): the FA Cup. I’m very proud of the players and the staff, because they did an incredible job.”

When Ten Hag later walked in to talk to the written press, there was no trophy in tow as there was after United won the Carabao Cup at Wembley 15 months ago.

He entered the room stone-faced, knowing what he was about to be asked. For a manager under intense scrutiny, he showed dignity and took it in his stride. But even if he wanted to talk about the significance of an FA Cup final win, he couldn’t.

Amid all the questions about his future, Ten Hag ended his day at Wembley with a message for the club’s ownership.

“I am in a project and we are exactly where we want to be — we are on our way to constructing a team for the future,” he said. “Two trophies in two years is not bad. Three finals in two years is not bad. We have to keep going.  

“I’m not satisfied with it, we have to do better, and if they don’t want me anymore then I go anywhere else to win trophies, because that is what I did my whole career.”
