Gangubai Kathiawadi review – gutsy Indian true crime drama

The hard-hitting story of a sex worker who rises through the ranks of 60s gangland Mumbai is powered by a magnetic performance from Alia Bhatt

A rowdy, wayward Hindi crime drama set in the red light district of 1960s Mumbai, Gangubai Kathiawadi may romanticise its central character – sex worker turned madam turned advocate and campaigner Gangu (Alia Bhatt) – but the film takes a razor blade to the cosier conventions of the melodrama. This is hard-hitting stuff. Gangu is trafficked into prostitution by a man she loved. But within a year in her new life, she realises that she has power. Bidi cigarette dangling from her lip, armed with a bottle of sugarcane alcohol and a cool, appraising gaze that turns grown men into snivelling boys, Gangu is magnetic, an all-too-rare female antihero.

And Bhatt is terrific, tearing through the film, her performance gathering momentum, as respect, desire and a certain amount of fear flickers in the eyes of those around her. Loosely based on a real-life woman, featured in the nonfiction book Mafia Queens of Mumbai , this is a broad brushstrokes portrait, but it’s robustly entertaining stuff from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali ( Devdas ).

'Darlings' movie review: Alia Bhatt lights up this dark comedy

Darlings have a cast to kill for. Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew headline this seductive black comedy set in Mumbai. But that’s just the start. Equally fascinating, at least to me, are the supporting players who populate the world of this film. Vijay Maurya, Rajesh Sharma, Puja Swarup, Kiran Karmarkar and Ajit Kelkar turn up in minor parts and make them memorable. Even in unimportant scenes, your eye is never bored. Darlings is a reminder that, though Hindi cinema may be having a generally drab year, it’s not for a lack of human resources.

The film opens with a short, smart prologue. Badrunissa (Alia Bhatt) rushes to a movie date with her boyfriend, Hamza (Vijay Varma). She waits and waits, missing the show. He turns up late, bearing a teddy bear and apologizing. “Government job leke aya (I found a government job),” he tells her. “Let’s get married.” Badru brightens up, hugging him. The couple looks happy though we already know what’s coming. It’s also notable, I think, that the scene unfolds outside a famous multiplex in Mumbai. Having missed a film, Badru’s life proceeds to get decidedly un-filmy.

When we meet her next, Badru is three years into an abusive marriage. Hamza, a jerk and an alcoholic, routinely hits his wife, triggered by anything from slips in her cooking to a genuine concern for his well-being. He’s an inept ticket examiner by profession, projecting—it is suggested—his anger and frustration from work on his quietly suffering wife. Badru tries everything to get him to change: de-addiction pills, titillation, even a child. One day, pushed beyond all fathomable limits, she takes her husband hostage.

Going by the trailer of Darlings, you’d expect this twist to come much earlier on in the film. Crime comedies, after all, are all about the payoff. But director Jasmeet K Reen is loath to jump the gun. Teaming with co-writer Parveez Sheikh, she takes time delineating the patterns of abuse. The first hour is a gripping yet excruciating loop of Hamza’s violations of his wife. He’s a baiter and a master manipulator, frighteningly aware of his wife’s hopes and dreams and emotional weak points and using them to his advantage. Delicately, without ever really blaming her, the film shows how far Badru has internalized his behaviour. Shamsu (Shefali Shah), Badru’s acerbic, hard-bitten mother, repeatedly tells her to leave him. But she can’t. Class no doubt plays a part in it. “Things have changed for folks on Twitter,” Shamsu tells a cop at one point. “Not for us.”

Alia is brilliant as Badrunissa. As in Gully Boy (2019) and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), her Bombaiyaa accent is spot-on (with an eccentric ‘S’ added to the ends of English words). While her characters in the aforementioned films were defined by their assertiveness, Badru is a bit of a muddle. Even after she has restrained, drugged up and tortured Hamza, she remains weirdly open to his machinations and appeals (or gives a good impression of it). Shefali is entertaining as Shamsu, “Badappan gaya kan khujane,” she shoots—though the winner, clearly, is Vijay Varma. There are more layers to his Hamza than all one-note abusive husbands from Hindi films combined. He’s a creature of pauses and tics. His menace comes in bursts. Nana Patekar would be proud.

Cinematographer Anil Mehta works masterfully within limited spaces and settings. Notice how, in the early stages of the film, he retains his angles inside Hamza and Badru’s home, and changes them up only after the dynamics of this cramped household have shifted. The intricacies of Chawl's life are emphasised; you get a sense of a hundred small hustles running parallelly. The songs, too, are a banger, especially the wild and swooning ‘Pleaj!’ by Mika Singh.

The second half loses some of its edgy focus. Having pushed its characters to a corner, the film struggles to bail them out. Jasmeet appears to be searching for a clean finish, despite the obvious messiness of what’s unfolding onscreen. Certain indulgences, like portraying the cop characters in strictly comic terms, could’ve been avoided. On the whole, though, Darlings entices and thrills, even if I wish the film had gone all out. I wish it had killed its darlings.

Gangubai Kathiawadi movie review: Alia Bhatt practically disappears into the character of Gangubai Kathiawadi. There's a hard-to-miss intensity in her eyes, and tenacity in her voice.

What I love about Sanjay Leela Bhansali is that he is a champion of flawed characters. Bollywood’s usual wholesome, pretty people who live happily ever after don’t interest him. His movies are propelled by extreme personalities who are racked by doubt, fear, lust, and greed. Think of Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat or Mastani in Bajirao Mastani or Michelle McNally in Black or even Devdas Mukherjee in Devdas. To this pantheon of deliciously twisted protagonists, Bhansali adds Ganga Harjivandas Kathiawadi or Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Early in the film, Gangubai declares – Kehte hai kamathipura mein kabhi amavas ki raat nahi hoti. kyunki waha Gangu rehti hai! Aur Gangu chaand thi aur chaand rahegi. It could have been Sanjay speaking. Because above all, Gangubai Kathiawadi is a thing of beauty – the rich white fabrics, the bygone era of Kamathipura, the dingy brothel houses, and of course the sheer gorgeousness of the lead character– Alia Bhatt. Every element in Gangubai Kathiawadi is like chaand.

But films are not paintings. They need a beating heart to come alive and this is where Bhansali excels. The film is based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges. The film chronicles the life and times of criminal, don, and sex worker Gangubai Kathiawadi, who was prolific in the 60s in Mumbai as the matriarch of a sex empire.

And so we have Bhatt, a young girl who migrates to Bombay with someone she loves as he promises to make her a big heroine in Hindi films. That never happens. Instead, she is sold into prostitution, where she finds herself being sucked into a world from which there is no escape. She accepts her fate early on and within a year, she wins the heart of her fellow sisters from the brothel.

That early promise of the portrayal of a promising young feisty woman, wronged and forced into prostitution withers away as she gains clout in the community and grows bigger in stature, and gains a superwoman aura. She even forms allies with the local gangster Karim Lala, played magnificently by Ajay Devgn.

However, even though the film has technical finesse, it has several hiccups in the way it builds its narrative. I wasn’t particularly seduced by the storytelling. Bhansali’s screenplay along with Utkarshini Vashishtha sets up the tone well, but the movie slumps in its middle section, which follows Gangu as she grows older. There isn’t enough material to warrant 156 minutes, and the tone gets uneven in the middle sections. But the film sputters back to life in the second half, especially during the climax. The problem also is the single-track narrative and its unwillingness to explore anyone or anything other than the Gangubai Kathiawadi-worshipping angle.

Bhatt practically disappears into the character of Gangubai Kathiawadi. There’s a hard-to-miss intensity in her eyes, and tenacity in her voice. She commands the screen with a fiery, arresting presence, never letting your attention wander away from her. She’s simply there, in that zone, casually drawing you in, scene after scene. Gangubai might be a flawed character, but Bhatt plays it with such brilliance that the audience is rooting for the character till the very end.

Take the scene in which she makes a long-distance call after 12 years to her parents when she comes to know that her father is dead, and she retaliates with an outburst to the operator who tells her that she only has 30 seconds remaining on the call. Or the scene in which she gives a passionate speech fighting for the rights of sex workers and their kids who deserve the right to be educated.

The film boasts of some of the best performances you will see by an ensemble cast in a long time, and that includes even the bit players. Of the central cast, Devgn is fantastic as the local gangster, and Seema Pahwa hits all the right notes as the brothel madam, also delivering impressive turns are Indira Tiwari as Kamli, Shantanu Maheshwari as Afshan. The only weak link is Vijay Raaz who plays the role of a transgender Raziabai. The character which is supposed to be pitted against Gangubai doesn’t seem to develop at all.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a glossier version of Gangubai’s own accomplishments to portray her struggles as a real person, sacrificing them for the sake of palatability. It is also shown that things come really easy for her and every hurdle is passed without any hesitation.

This is a seriously slow and steady film, although slightly scattered, but stunning all the same. If you’re expecting the roar and rumblings of a regular Bollywood film, this one is far from it. But therein lies the beauty of it.

Darlings — starring Alia Bhatt and out Friday on Netflix — marks Jasmeet K. Reen's “feature” filmmaking debut, following her tenure as a screenwriter in Bollywood. Stress on the word “feature”, because she had previously directed some short films, including a small segment in 2007's Dus Kahaniyaan, an anthology dealing with diverse subjects relating to lust, infidelity, and a spectrum of emotions. Her upcoming full-length Netflix movie, Darlings, deals with similar topics, through the eyes of a quirky mother-daughter duo, as they seek courage and love in this unforgiving world.

Besides leading the cast, Bhatt serves as a producer — her first time — via her Eternal Sunshine Productions banner for this upcoming Netflix original film. From a thematic standpoint, Darlings deals with domestic abuse through a dark comedy filter, while trying to not come off as insensitive. “It's the characters that are very light and quirky who think that they have everything in control, but actually have nothing in control. So that is where the humour really comes in. It's more like a comedy of errors,” explained Bhatt in an interview .

Set against the backdrop of a poor neighbourhood in Mumbai, Darlings centres around Badru's (Bhatt) suffering at the hands of her alcoholic husband Hamza (Vijay Varma), who implodes with rage every time he gets drunk. As a countermeasure, she teams up with her mother (Shefali Shah) to try and get rid of his problem by putting him through hell. The script, written by Reen herself, was passed onto Bhatt through Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment , after which the streaming service chose to distribute it.

Darlings releases this Friday, August 5 at 12:00am PT / 12:30pm IST exclusively on Netflix worldwide. Those interested will be required to have a subscription plan, starting at Rs. 149 for mobile and Rs. 199 for the basic plan, which lets you stream on a TV or laptop but only in SD resolution.

Coming fresh off the Telegu film RRR and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi , Bhatt makes her second OTT appearance with Darlings. The first was Sadak 2 on Disney+ Hotstar , opposite Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Badrunissa “Badru” Shaikh is a troubled, albeit happily-married woman who tries to cure her husband's alcoholism when an argument erupts into physical violence. To establish and maintain authority, she conspires with her mother to try and poison him — just enough to keep him sick, and put him through physical and mental pain. The unconditional love for her husband is unmatched, as evidenced by her trying on expensive dresses to spice up their relationship.

Shah ( Delhi Crime ), billed second on the list, plays Badru's mother aka her partner in crime. As a mastermind behind the twisting events in the film, she observes Hamza's habits and suggests poisoning his food, as he loves drinking at dinner time. Luckily, Badru rejects the idea and opts for Disulfiram pills. But the mother continues to support her as an alibi, when the cops get involved.

“She may not necessarily be right, but is not at all ashamed of it. I think it's interesting because it's not a one-sided character while offering an interesting dimension to a mother,” said Shah in reference to her character in an interview .

Mirzapur's Varma plays the husband Hamza, who is all-caring during the day and turns into a tyrant at night while intoxicated. The Darlings trailer offers some justification for his drinking habits, as he gets pushed around at his job as a ticket checker. Morning routines consist of drinking cold drinks, standing idly at railway platforms, and occasionally cleaning toilets, as he contemplates his mundane life. At some point, he is forced to stay home (thanks to the mother-daughter duo), casting a web of lies and conspiracies relating to his sudden disappearance.

Roshan Mathew ( Choked ) plays Zulfi, a family friend who assists Badru and her mother avoid suspicion. Hamza's inactivity prompts a missing person case, pulling Zulfi into the mix as a suspect and the falsely accused. The possibility is further strengthened by feelings of mistrust, where Hamza suspects Zulfi of committing adultery with his wife.

Vijay Maurya ( The White Tiger ) plays the police inspector in charge of the case, with a standard questioning procedure that puts Badru and her mother under light suspicion. He is joined by Santosh Juvekar as a junior officer, and Rajesh Sharma ( The Tashkent Files ) as Hamza's boss from the railway department.

The first teaser trailer for Darlings was revealed on July 5, featuring a metaphorical voiceover that explained the gist of the story. The trailer unravelled the troubled relationship between Badru and her husband Hamza, while offering some insight into Zulfi's involvement in the story. Both men are roughly the same age, with the latter supposedly being in a relationship with the mother — freely walking in and out of the house, when Hamza is out for work.

On July 25, Netflix released a full-length trailer ( below ) that spoiled some important plot beats. The editing was performed in a way that would abide by the mother and daughter's testimony to the cops, thereby misleading the audience at first. Both clumsily report Hamza's disappearance, when his boss comes over to check on him, leading to a maelstrom of manipulation tactics.

As part of the promotion, Netflix also released some fun, informational skits with Bhatt in character, that have nothing to do with the actual movie.

Darlings budget

The production budget for Darlings was revealed to be between Rs. 20–25 crore, with original plans for a theatrical release. However, in February, distribution rights for the movie were sold to Netflix India for Rs. 75–80 crore.

The first reviews for Darlings go up this Friday, August 5, the day it releases on Netflix globally. The Gadgets 360 review of the film will be out on the same day.

An Instagram handle called Bollyvert AI had shared a video where Kareena features in iconic scenes from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's biographical-drama. Although there is nothing new about actors being reimagined as popular movie characters, Reddit users had a different perspective about it. While some fans still rooted for Alia, others agreed that Kareena was perfect to portray Gangubai . A section of netizens even suggested Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra's AI version. A fan commented, “Uff reminds me of bebo in chameli. She was so effortless in that one.” Another netizen opined, “Unpopular opinion but Alia Bhatt was terribly miscast in this movie.” A user also captioned his comment as, “That makes me wonder, why didn't slb choose Kareena. Alia could have played the younger part and Kareena the older part. Alia was great, no doubt. Netflix’s Heart of Stone movie review: Alia Bhatt’s Hollywood debut is disastrous

Heart of Stone movie review: Netflix’s new franchise-starter, starring Gal Gadot and Alia Bhatt desperately needed some meat.

Alia Bhatt is a brilliant actor in Bollywood. But her Hollywood debut was rather below her talent. Though she was given a pretty large role, the script wasn’t up to the mark. A movie especially on the digital platform can never do well by just having some good looking actors.

Netflix’s Heart of Stone desperately needed some solid chunk of meat and a convincing story which the film lacked. It’s high time, filmmakers need to understand that our audience has evolved and they have a good understanding of cinema, so don’t underestimate the audience.

Sorry to say, but Alia too was struggling with her dialogues, it looked like she had mugged it up like a school kid and was just delivering it like a speech without any expression. Probably, she is not comfortable in the language and cannot feel the script like all of us. The action scenes were mindless and badly executed. It looked like a copy of Amazon Prime’s Citadel which was again a mindless series.

Coming to the story, _ Heart of Stone i_s a spy thriller starring Wonder Woman Gal Gadot which lacks originality and looks like a begged, borrowed and stolen film from Bond, Bourne, Hunt and also Priyanka Chopra’s Citadel . I understand that Priyanka Chopra is a big name in Hollywood, but Alia blindly following her footsteps in Hollywood was not a bright move at all. Let’s admit, she doesn’t have the presence of a Hollywood actor, she is a total misfit.

The story goes like this, there’s a mysterious organisation known as the Charter, controlled by an all-seeing supercomputer which wishes to clean up where governments and security agencies. Gal Gadot, who has co-produced Heart of Stone plays the role of Rachel Stone, an agent with Charter, a global peacekeeping agency that operates in the shadows. Alia Bhatt plays the role of 22-year-old Keya Dhawan, a globetrotting hacker. She plays an anti-hero in the film. Talking about the pluses, the only thing that is terrific are the action scenes.

Gal Gadot is going from superhero to super spy in the action-packed first trailer for the international espionage thriller “ Heart of Stone .”

Gadot was joined by co-stars Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt at Netflix’s Tudum fan festival in São Paulo, Brazil, where the trio debuted the film’s first trailer. The footage features heart-stopping stunts, like Gadot’s Rachel Stone — an intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency — skydiving from a death-defying height.

Stone and Dornan’s Parker are among the organization’s highly-trained agents, who have no political leanings or national allegiances and are described as “working together to keep peace in a turbulent world.”

But when hacker Keya Dhawan (Bhatt, as the Bollywood A-lister stars in her first major Hollywood movie ) steals the agency’s most valuable – and dangerous – weapon (a technological core that “gives the Charter its power,” it’s “heart,” if you will), Stone sets off on an epic, globe-trotting adventure to save the day and clear her name.

“Heart or no heart, I’m coming for you,” Gadot snarls into a cell phone as her own warning to Bhatt.

Directed by Tom Harper from a script by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder, the intense footage also features major action set pieces including a motorcycle chase through the Alps and cars speeding through the streets of Lisbon. Gadot is also seen flying through the air twice — first, paragliding off a snowy embankment and later, doing some extreme skydiving.

“Chance of success just plummeted,” a Charter agent (played by Matthias Schweighöfer) cautions while Stone performs the dangerous maneuver. “Only because you have no imagination,” she shoots back, as she manages to tumble onto her target.

“Heart of Stone” begins streaming on August 11.

Netflix nabbed worldwide rights to the project in 2021, marking another partnership between the streamer and Skydance, after teaming for “The Old Guard” with Charlize Theron, Ryan Reynolds’ “6 Underground” and “The Adam Project,” directed by Shawn Levy. Gadot and Netflix have their own strong ties, with the superstar set to appear in two sequels to “Red Notice,” as the 2021 action comedy is one of the streamer’s most-watched movies of all time.

Earlier, India Today cited a source who said Ranbir is practising his voice and diction for his character. The news site quotes the source saying, "Ranbir has a certain baritone and a way of speaking his lines. It is symbolic and if you have even closed your eyes, you can recognise a dialogue purely based on Ranbir’s voice. In ‘Ramayana’, Nitesh wants to make sure Ranbir sounds different from the characters he’s played in the past. Being a versatile actor, Ranbir is enjoying this process of trying something new."

According to certain speculations, Nitesh Tiwari's film will feature Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Yash as Ravana and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.
